In a shocking twist after J.J. Abrams insisted he would shoot the film in 2D, Paramount has announced that some scenes in the upcoming Star Trek sequel are being shot in IMAX 3D!

Producer/Director J.J. Abrams used IMAX 3D cameras on Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (which Abrams only produced), and he was so impressed with the results that he has decided to give Star Trek fans the same experience.

The Star Trek sequel, written by Damon Lindelof (Prometheus), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, will receive an IMAX release concurrent with its regular theatrical release, scheduled for May 17, 2013. The film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Seldana, Anton Yelchin, Jon Cho, and Simon Pegg.

Rock of Ages Director Dishes: Adam Shankman Sends Musical Love Letter

Adam Shankman successfully brought Hairspray to life after it became a musical on Broadway. Now the director is charged with bringing another Great White Way smash to the big screen with Rock of Ages. Considering he has Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Malin Akerman, Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta… casting spectacularly is a great start. The director spoke with Movie Fanatic and said that putting this film together had him feeling like a certain character played by Russell Crowe.

Adam Shankman Directs Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand in Rock of Ages
“It was actually scary because you had to do this A Beautiful Mind thing. You’re tracking all these storylines. With Hairspray, there was a nice little train that you got on. This was like tracking all these different stories with less time than I had on Hairspray and the exact same amount of money. Basically everything in this movie is made of paste and papier-mache.”

He began with a crystal clear picture of what he wanted to do: Pen a love letter to his youthful days inhabiting the Sunset Strip-adoring 1980s music, a stone’s throw away from where Movie Fanatic is meeting him at the London Hotel. “I grew up two miles down the street. My dad’s office was around the corner. He was a music business manager. I graduated in 1982 and I lived in this world,” Shankman said.

“I wasn’t a metal head, but this music was on MTV. Every other video was Hot for Teacher, Pour Some Sugar on Me, White Snake or Twisted Sister… whether or not you had them in your Walkman, they were everywhere.”

In Rock of Ages, Shankman wanted to capture the last era where rock stars were expected to act outrageously and be rewarded for it instead of lambasted. “The news was full of the antics of these guys. These were guys who could throw a couch out of a window of a hotel and it was a funny thing! I wanted to make sure that I was honoring that,” Shankman said.

The filmmaker also did not want to make a film that made fun of the era. “The period makes fun of itself for God’s sake,” he added. “It’s its own gimmick, a joke, so to speak. Shoulder pads, come on!”

Rock of Ages, the film, began with a suggestion from the person who would eventually star and would subsequently blow us out of the water with his performance (stay with Movie Fanatic for our review June 15). “Tom Cruise is the first person who said to me, ‘Dude, when are we going to make a musical?’ He was laughing because Suri’s favorite movie was Hairspray,” Shankman proudly said.

“Then when this opportunity came up, I thought, ‘Oh my God, if I could get one of the biggest movie stars in the world to play one of the biggest rock stars in the world, that would be amazing! I’ll tell you what was his audition for this movie: Tropic Thunder. So knowing he could commit to a comedic character the way that he commits to a dramatic character, there’s no 100 percent with him, there’s only ten billion percent. I knew it was going to fly.”

When it came to the voices, although Cruise is sensational at singing, Shankman zeroed in on an R&B superstar he’s dreamed of working with. “The first person I wanted in the movie was Mary J. (Blige),” Shankman said. “Why did I choose to start with Mary J. Blige? [Laughs] She’s Mary J. Blige!”

Adam Shankman Directs Rock of Ages Stars Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta
Shankman made the conscious decision to alter certain parts of the Broadway production to make it work for the screen -- something that was quite time consuming, but all-important. His inspiration came from the man whom he inherited Hairspray from. “When I got Hairspray I emailed John Waters (creator of the first film the musical is based on) and said, ‘Dear Mr. Waters, my name is Adam Shankman. I was just invited to direct the musical of Hairspray, hope you don’t mind, love Adam.’ I was in Baltimore making the first Step Up at the time and he immediately emailed me back saying, ‘So, where are you?’ And I said, ‘I’m in Baltimore,’ and he said, ‘So am I! Let’s have lunch.’”

What Waters told Shankman worked brilliantly for Hairspray and it's his same modus operandi for Rock of Ages. “He told me, ‘Do not do what I did. Do not do what the play did. You can only do what you do. You have to tell the story through your own filter otherwise it will be a disaster. You can change anything as long as you make a good movie.’ With this one, I just had to go with how I thought the story was told most honestly.”

Prometheus: Did it Live Up to the Hype?

“Prometheus has landed,” Idris Elba says in Ridley Scott’s latest movie. The Prometheus quote obviously has a double meaning now that the film has premiered in theaters. One of the most buzzed about films in many years had a viral campaign that had fans searching the internet for clues to the “is it a prequel to Alien?” movie to find out something, anything, about the new sci-fi epic.

Charlize Theron in Prometheus
After years of inquisition, audiences have experienced the Scott film and it has left some people loving it, and others scratching their heads. Does it add up? What is the black goo? Who is that guy at the beginning who dies, falls into the water and then becomes literal human DNA? If you have answers to those questions, then Scott’s film spoke to you. Others… well, they have issues. So, we wanted to ask our readers where they stand on the effectiveness of Prometheus.

Did Prometheus live up to the hype?

Jean Dujardin, the man who won every award in 2011 is in talks to join the cast of Martin Scorsese's new film, The Wolf of Wall Street.

Jean Dujardin in The Artist

Dujardin is best known for his Academy Award-winning work in the Academy Award-winning film The Artist (did I mention it won some Academy Awards?). The strapping star would join Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) in the film.

The Wolf of Wall Street, based on a memoir by Jordan Belfort, chronicles the author's rise and fall as a Wall Street broker, with his wild personal life and illegal financial dealings. The memoir also served as the basis for 2000's Boiler Room. DuJardin would play a Swiss banker who gets involved in the scheme.

Scorsese is planning to begin production on the film this August. In the meantime, catch DiCaprio in the awesome Django Unchained trailer.

Rock of Ages: Malin Akerman on Tom Cruise and His Monkey

Malin Akerman is the picture of pleased with herself on this June afternoon in Hollywood, and she should be. Movie Fanatic is meeting with her along the famed Sunset Strip that sits at the heart of her latest film, Rock of Ages. Akerman portrays a journalist from Rolling Stone charged with interviewing the biggest rock star in the world, Stacey Jaxx (Tom Cruise).

Malin Akerman and Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages
She has long dreamed of working with the actor, and the experience did not disappoint. Akerman probably spent more screen time with Cruise than any other cast member and she was struck with how he was not only in the moment every second of filming, but also how natural being simply silly came to him. “I didn't really know what to expect in that sense working with him. I've met him a few times before and he's so lovely and charming and all of the above, but acting with someone can be very different,” Akerman said. “He is really intense and has all these amazing action flicks and I was amazed at his sense of humor and how far he wanted to go with it. That's why he is who he is. That's why he's had such a long career... because he's game for anything.”

Having him sing to her rear end was a bit of a surprise, but like Cruise, Akerman was game for anything. “I love physical comedy,” she admitted. She was surprised at how willing Cruise was to assume the position and begin belting out a song.

“I just kept looking at Tom and I'm like, 'Are you cool with this? Cause I'm cool with this!’ And he's like, ‘Yeah, this is hilarious.’ I think something that we find funny, I think it’s a sign that the audience is gonna love it too. That's how we gauge it. I thought that was really clever the singing in the butt. It was great, it made me laugh anyway.”

She found Cruise a delight, but also Mickey the baboon who portrays his sidekick, known as Hey Man. We asked her to share a special moment from working with the monkey and Akerman gave us a doozy. “I have a great monkey story! At the end of the film I have this moment with the monkey and I'm pregnant and we're watching Tom perform. At first we were gonna have the monkey on my back and apparently the monkey doesn't really go on people's backs,” Akerman said. They had to find a way to get Mickey to allow the actress to hold him in the front.

“So the trainer said, ‘Why don't we go into this room and train a little bit and get him to get comfortable with you.' Guess where the monkey’s hands land? Right in my boobs! So not only did I get felt up by Stacie Jaxx, but also by his monkey. It was an awesome moment.”

The Rock of Ages musical was a smash on Broadway and celebrated an age when hair metal ruled the airwaves. Of that era, her go-to bands were unfortunately not featured on the Rock of Ages soundtrack. “My favorite bands growing up were Metallica, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. My first rock concert was Bon Jovi,” Akerman said. Being such a fan of the era, she was among the first to see it on stage. “I watched the Broadway show twice before I even knew the movie was gonna be made into a movie! I'm just a big fan of music and comedy put together. It was the perfect mix… honestly, this was my jam. I loved it.”

Malin Akerman in Rock of Ages
Akerman has just signed to play Debbie Harry in CBGB, so Rock of Ages was a nice place to first flex her singing muscles, although she did have hesitation. "I was extremely nervous. That was the most nerve-racking part of this whole process,” she said. “It's intimidating to go into a studio with these producers who've produced really great artists and you kind of feel embarrassed. You can't hit the note and the sound is off. It can be stressful.”

She tells Movie Fanatic that she is not new to singing. “I did have a band in 2002! I was helping these Italian guys write lyrics in English. They just went, ‘Why don't you become the singer of the band?’ I wasn't getting any acting jobs so I thought, ‘Who doesn't want to be a rock star?’ Kind of like the theme of this film,” Akerman said.

2 Days in New York Gets Poster & Trailer

Julie Delpy's indie romcom 2 Days in New York was a hit among the festival circuit in 2007. The French actress wrote, directed, produced and edited the film, in addition to starring in it, composing the score, and soliciting her father to act in it! That seems like enough work for a lifetime, but Delpy is at it again with a sequel, 2 Days in New York. Check out the poster and trailer:

2 Days in New York Poster

2 Days in New York stars Delpy and Chris Rock (Madagascar 3) as a couple living in (you guessed it) New York. Everything goes haywire when Delpy's quirky French parents arrive with her sister for a 2-day vacation.

2 Days in Paris starred Delpy and Adam Goldberg, best known for his role in Dazed and Confused (check out some Dazed and Confused quotes) as a New York couple whose brief trip to Paris tests their relationship. With a five years between that movie and this one, surely a lot has changed for the characters in the interim.

Catch 2 Days in New York in theaters August 10.

The Host stars Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, Max Irons, and Diane Kruger. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Stephenie Myer, author of the wildly popular Twilight series.

After an alien soul is injected into the body of a teenage girl, the resulting entity (called "Wanderer") opts out of her race's mission of taking over the Earth, instead setting out to aid other humans against the aliens. Ronan, who plays the alien/girl hybrid, gained acclaim for her award-winning roles in the films Atonement and The Lovely Bones.

Rock of Ages Movie Review: Juke Box Heroes

$
0
0

Rock of Ages has a tagline that fits as a description for a movie review of the film as well: Nothin' but a good time. That’s honestly all the movie is, nothing earth-shattering. And nothing that will make you think about it long after the credits roll. But, during those two hours in the dark, audiences are treated to a balls-to-the-wall journey of rock and roll, circa 1987.

Tom Cruise Stars in Rock of Ages
Alec Baldwin portrays the owner of a Whisky-A-Go-Go-type club called the Bourbon Room. He is in dire straights and in need of a show that will put his establishment back on the map. Enter a mega rock star who has a long history with the Bourbon, Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Jaxx is the biggest rock and roller in the world and his farewell performance with his band is set to be at the club where they recorded their live album.

Cruise enters the film where it feels like it's a little too late, but when he does, he rocks it like a hurricane. The reason for the later arrival of the superstar is the film’s need to introduce its aspiring rockers/lovebirds: Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta.

Boneta’s Drew is a singer-guitarist with a dream of having his songs become sensations. Hough’s Sherrie is literally right off the bus from the Midwest and shares Drew’s aspirations. They meet, fall in love and have a misunderstanding that splits them apart… for now. But, this is drastically different than what happened in the Broadway production and we think the film suffers a tad for it. The Stacee Jaxx character is much smaller in the musical and the increased involvement is fine because we get more killer Cruise, but this complicates things throughout the film, especially the young lovers' romance.

Also slightly different from the stage play is the fight for the moral high ground, embodied onscreen by Catherine Zeta-Jones. Although her and Russell Brand’s back and forth on the mash-up of We Built This City and We’re Not Going to Take It is the film’s musical highlight, Zeta-Jones’ religious zealot feels like an added layer that we did not particularly need. Don’t get me wrong though, she is stellar in the part and as she showed in Chicago, the actress knows how to belt out a song.

The two highlights of the Adam Shankman (Hairspray) directed film is Cruise, as we mentioned, and Mary J. Blige. The R&B sensation portrays Justice, a strip club owner who winds up serving as a maternal influence to Hough’s Sherrie. The cast can sing, yet when Blige belts out Pat Benatar’s Shadows of the Night or Journey’s Any Way You Want It, audiences immediately realize who the real singer is here.

As we said, Rock of Ages is an all-out good time at the movies. But, once it’s over, will you remember it the same way as some other musicals (like Zeta-Jones’ Chicago) over a decade later? Probably not… yet while you are in the theater, be prepared to rock.

That's My Boy Movie Review: R-Rated Romp

$
0
0

Adam Sandler does not pull any punches when it comes to his first R-rated movie in a decade. The film recalls the humor of Sandler’s stand-up rather than his PG-13 films of late. Toss in the comic chemistry between the recently departed from Saturday Night Live comic Andy Samberg, and solely for those two reasons above, the film is worth seeing.

Adam Sandler and Tony Orlando in That's My Boy
Sandler is one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. He is also one of the only comic forces in Tinseltown who can open a movie overseas. So, why change a formula if it’s working? In the case of That’s My Boy, Sandler does change his formula, if only by the most minute of amounts… he lets his characters curse. The comic actor doesn’t make films for the broad audience. His fan base, who adores his work, will find his latest one of his greatest. The rest of the audience will still scratch their heads wondering as to the funnyman’s appeal.

Sandler plays Donny Berger, who at the tender age of 15 had an illicit affair with his teacher that resulted in her getting pregnant and being sent to jail for statutory rape. Berger takes in the kid and in the process becomes a 1980s celebrity rubbing elbows with Vanilla Ice, Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. Then, as fame was as fleeting for those three, it too is for Berger and he finds himself in 2012 owing back taxes to the IRS and having a son (Samberg) who will not acknowledge his existence. When Donny sees his son on the cover of a local magazine being triumphed for his financial business wizardry and pending nuptials to Leighton Meester’s Jamie, Sandler sets out to crash the wedding and rekindle their relationship.

Samberg and Sandler are an impeccable comic pair. Watching Samberg’s disdain turn to what we can’t tell you without giving away too much is proof that this performer is well on his way to screen success. And would you believe it if we told you that the other facet of this film that works impeccably well is the screen presence of Vanilla Ice? He mocks his persona and, in the process, creates some hysterical moments.

As Sandler has been known to do, the most unlikely stars show up in his movies to take their stab at the SNL vet’s movie mayhem. In That’s My Boy, audiences get a “comeback” for Tony Orlando, James Caan and even Todd Bridges whose appearances are with varying degrees of success. Despite all the comedy firepower from the leads and his cast of crazies (including regular Sandler actor Nick Swardson), the one who steals the comic thunder is former Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia. His characterization of Chad, the brother of Meester’s Jamie, is legendarily hysterical.

Although That’s My Boy is a departure for Sandler in that its raunchiness factor is pushed further than ever before, Movie Fanatic is afraid that only fans of the comedian will still find his Boy-ish humor funny.

Paperman to Run Before Wreck-It Ralph: Disney Short Blends Traditional Animation and CG

Disney has announced that their new short animated film, Paperman will play before screenings of Wreck-It Ralph.

Paperman Poster

The film is not, in fact, an adaptation of the 1980's arcade game Paperboy, though given that they're making films from board games now (see: Battleship), I'm sure one of those is in the works somewhere (and word is the news-chucking character will make an appearance in Wreck-It Ralph). The black-and-white short follows a man in mid-century New York who sees his dream girl on his morning commute. After finding her again in a skyscraper window, he uses a stack of paper to get her attention.

Animators used a new system that combines 2D animation with computer animation in a technique called "final line advection."

Paperman premiers November 2 with Wreck-It Ralph. Check out the Wreck-It Ralph trailer, with a forward from John C. Reilly, for more.

Django Unchained Makes a Last Minute Addition: Jonah Hill to Join the Cast

Tarantino, at the buzzer! For 3! Yes! (You were all reading that in a Marv Albert voice, right?)

With all the up-and-down casting news that has been swirling around the production of Django Unchained for the past several months, the "in, then out" comedy star Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) is reportedly back in.

Jonah Hill Joins Neighborhood Watch

Hill was apparently offered a role in the film, but had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming comedy The Watch (have a look at The Watch red band trailer). Now that conflict seems to have passed. There is no word yet on who Hill will play, or if it will be the same role he was originally touted for.

This is certainly a last-minute addition, as the film is due for release on Christmas Day of this year. In fact, there has already been a pretty in-depth Django Unchained trailer that seems to suggest most of the film has been shot.

Kristen Wiig and Ben Stiller The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Stiller and Wiig star in the modern remake of the 1947 classic. The film follows Stiller as a timid photo editor who gets lost in his vivid daydreams as he embarks on a journey for a missing photo negative (apparently not a thumb drive with a .jpg on it).

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will also star Sean Penn, Adam Scott, Patton Oswalt, and Shirley MacLaine.
