Weekend Movie Preview: June 15, 2012

Tom Cruise Rocks, Adam Sandler exults That’s My Boy and Mark Duplass has issues with Your Sister’s Sister -- all in one weekend as three new films hit theaters.

Rock of Ages: Cruise is Stacee Jaxx, the world’s biggest rock and roll star, who at the beginning of the film is set to perform his farewell concert with his band before embarking on a solo career at the Sunset Strip club where it all started: The Bourbon Room. Director Adam Shankman has assembled a top-notch cast beyond Cruise, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough and Malin Akerman. The soundtrack for the movie musical sizzles and the film is fantastic fun, as we explain further in our Rock of Ages review.

That’s My Boy: Sandler goes R-rated for the first time in over a decade and the results are a raunch-laden blast. His first teaming with recent SNL grad Andy Samberg as a father and son team results in an explosion of hilarity. Besides going dirtier for that R-rating, Sandler is still making the same kind of jokes, which should thrill his fan base. For more, check out our That’s My Boy review.

Your Sister’s Sister: Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass star in a film that is an actor’s dream. Director Lynn Shelton had a script, but encouraged her actors to improvise throughout her film and the result is a performance by the trio of leads that feels about as real as one can get. Duplass’ character has just lost his brother, so his best friend (Blunt) suggests he heads up to her family cabin. When he gets there, he meets her sister (DeWitt) and they hook up, complicating things with Blunt.

Ubisoft and Paramount Pictures are in talks to develop a film adaptation of the award-winning video game series, Splinter Cell.

Sam Fisher Splinter Cell

There have so far been six games in the series, with a seventh planned for next year. It follows Sam Fisher, a highly-trained NSA black-ops agent in the secret fictional sub-agency, Third Echelon.

Video games have made highly successful film franchises in the past, perhaps the best example of which is Resident Evil. The Resident Evil 5 trailer was just released yesterday for the newest film in the series, which premieres September 14.

Splinter Cell is in the very beginning stages of planning, so there is not yet any production or release schedule. While we await more news, who do you think should play Sam Fisher? I think the character bares some resemblance to Argo's Chris Messina. Let us know what you think in the comments section!

Jeff, Who Lives at Home: Cocktails with the Cast

In Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Jason Segel portrays the title character. As the movie begins, he is living at his mother’s house in her basement, spending most of his days lounging around trying to find a life purpose. Movie Fanatic caught up with the film’s co-director Mark Duplass (Cyrus) and star Judy Greer at The Basement, a bar in Santa Monica, for a few drinks and a chat about the fantastic film they created as it arrives today on Blu-Ray.

Mark Duplass, Judy Greer and Jay Duplass Picture
For Greer, her passion for the film was evident as she couldn’t simply witness it once. “I’ve seen this movie three times. I just love this movie,” she told Movie Fanatic as she was brought a glass of champagne. The actress is thrilled about the home video release of the film so more audiences can witness the magic of two brothers (Segel and Ed Helms); the latter’s wife (Greer) and the siblings’ mother (Susan Sarandon), as they navigate fate and family on one eventful day. “We’re all so busy. It’s great for people who missed it in the theaters to finally be able to see it. This movie will have a really long life because it’s so good.”

As director Duplass enjoyed his beer, he told Movie Fanatic a terrific story about how he and his brother Jay obtained the Porsche in the film that Helms crashes into a tree. “The only reason we got to crash that Porsche is because Paramount had four of them left over from making Dinner with Schmucks,” Duplass said and laughed. “They had left over Porches!”

When working on a smaller budget film, those are the types of breaks one needs. The Duplass brothers’ films are always strong on story and Jeff, Who Lives at Home is no different. The brotherly aspect spoke to the helmer, but is one of many layers to this multi-faceted film. “It’s not necessarily just about brothers. It’s a very specific film in a lot of ways. There is a lack of cynicism in the movie,” Duplass said. “You’re exposing yourself where in a lot of ways Cyrus was meant for an astute audience and it was a safer film for me to make emotionally. Jeff has been around for a while. We wrote it five years ago. We’ve been waiting for the moment when we felt like we were good enough filmmakers to make it.”

In the beginning of Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Segel’s character expounds on how the message of the film Signs should be one to live by: Fate finds you. Along with several TV screens playing their film at The Basement, one over the bar was playing Signs.

“I love Signs to be honest with you,” he said as Duplass glanced at Mel Gibson doing his thing on the screen above.

“I love how bold it is. It is a flawed film, in my opinion, but to go ahead and draw those universal connections -- it has a lot of balls in it. But most importantly, I thought that because all my films start with character, it was the perfect way to exposit a character because I (expletive) hate exposition. So to have Jeff sit on a toilet and talk about how much he loves Signs, you can’t be a cynic and love that movie that much. You have to be a believer. I wanted Jeff to not have a cynical bone in his body and hopefully you’ll like him because of that. Yeah, he’s a stoner and he still lives in his mom’s basement, but to a certain degree Jeff is like a hero to me. He has resisted joining society because he believes something great is out there and I love that about him. You can call him a slacker but he has a (expletive) of integrity. He’s holding out for the greatness.”

Jeff Who Lives at Home Blu-RayStanding nearby, Greer overhears Duplass and she proudly concurs with her director’s sentiment. “I love the message of this movie,” Greer said. “Our movie’s awesome.”

Another round for everyone!

Jeff, Who Lives at Home is out now on Blu-Ray, DVD and On Demand.

Jon Hamm Will Play Larry David's Nemsis in New Comedy

We teased the Larry David project when it was still in negotiation, and now we've got some exciting casting news. Jon Hamm has signed on to play opposite David in a new comedy film being developed by the Curb Your Enthusiasm creator.

Jon Hamm Picture

While Hamm is best known for his role as the stoic and enigmatic ad exec Don Draper on Mad Men, he has been proving his chops as a comedic force with appearances on SNL and 30 Rock, in films such as Bridesmaids (check out some Bridesmaids quotes), and by rooting himself deeply in the LA comedy scene.

The untitled project will star David, and will be produced much like Curb, with only an outline in lieu of a script, and entirely improvised dialogue. Greg Mottola, known for such films as Adventureland and Superbad (head to our Superbad quotes page), will direct.

There are no real plot details of yet, save that David's character will be much like his Curb persona, and he will get himself into some similar situations. Would we expect any more from the cantankerous funny man?

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter Exclusive: Timur Bekmambetov Brings Abe to Life

Director Timur Bekmambetov may be developing Wanted 2, but on this day… his world is all about his latest, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The helmer was charged with taking Seth Grahame-Smith’s bestselling book and turning the writer’s screenplay into the thriller that lands June 22. Their story of our greatest president (Benjamin Walker) and his epic journey to the White House is grounded in reality, and that is why, Bekmambetov tells Movie Fanatic exclusively, it works so well. “What was cool about this project is that it is absolutely historically correct. Everything is real,” he said. “All the events are written in history, but it still is a fantasy world.”

Benjamin Walker is Abraham Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
The supernatural universe he speaks of is how in Grahame-Smith’s world, Lincoln’s origins story goes much deeper and darker than we ever thought. After losing his mother at nineteen years-old to a vampire, the future man who would save the union and abolish slavery, worked his way to the top while still slaying vampires any chance he could.

Even growing up in Kazakhstan, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director has always been inspired by Lincoln and treasured the opportunity to tell a different kind of story. “I really believe that this person changed the world. It’s not only America icon, he is all over the world,” Bekmambetov said.

“He created an idea, a belief, how to arrange society differently. He executed the idea how to create a world of free men. It sounds a little bit too romantic, but it’s true. People all around the world live under his umbrella and his rules that he created. There’s a great line in the movie, ‘Until everyone is free, we are all slaves.’ The concept of freedom exists in many countries. But, it’s very different what he did. I think the vampirism as a metaphor for slavery in our movie, is a great idea Seth created.”

Bekmambetov could not speak highly enough about the book's author and film's screenwriter, Grahame-Smith. “Making a movie is a very collaborate process. Seth was great because he created this world. It’s his world,” he said. “It’s my job to interpret it to another media. But, it’s his tonality we kept when we decided to make this movie.”

This is not the director’s first foray into the world of vampires -- he created Night Watch and Day Watch. Yet, he cautions that he does everything he can -- whether in Wanted or any of his films -- to have something real that the audience can grasp. “I’m not a big fan of genre movies to be honest,” he admitted. “Every time when I’m dealing with a genre, I’m trying to ground it so that’s it’s more realistic and relatable. To find the way to find a way to combine it and make it believable -- that was the challenge we were trying to overcome.”

After Night Watch and its sequel Day Watch, he told us that he was looking for another vampire film, preferably also set in Moscow like his first two. But, when he discovered Grahame-Smith’s book, he was completely sold he had his next vampire tale. “I was looking for the next cycle of Russian movies and I didn’t have a chance to find a story for it. When I read Seth’s book, I understood that it is what I’m looking for. It’s absolutely different, but it’s the same type of movie.”

The key to the success of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter lies in the casting of the sixteenth president of the United States. “I couldn’t imagine this movie without Ben Walker. I don’t think I would make it,” Bekmambetov said.

Timur Bekmambetov and Benjamin Walker on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Set
He shares his opinion that he believes that his actor and the character share real personal qualities that make the two inseparable. “For me, he is Lincoln. He has all the qualities I think Lincoln had. He’s honest [laughs]. He’s simple and he has a very unique sense of humor. He’s a man of action. He’s not just a reflective artist. He’s a boy next door. And he’s a perfectionist, which is important for this film.”

Bekmambetov marveled at how Walker committed to the part and carried the film on his shoulders. “He spent six hours a day in makeup, and then we had a 12 hour shooting day. I don’t know how he did it. But, he did it and never complained. He also did all the action scenes himself,” he added. “Most importantly, what he did, he played Lincoln as a 19-year-old boy and a 55 year-old man. It’s most impressive.”

After a brief teaser yesterday, the much-anticipated new trailer for Breaking Dawn Part 2 has arrived, offering a glimpse into Bella's life as a vampire and the impending battle between the Cullens and the Volturi.

The crux of Breaking Dawn Part 2 is Irina misidentifying Bella and Edward's daughter Renesmee as an immortal child - despite the fact that she was born, not bitten - and the vampire authorities being quite unhappy.

The Cullens must therefore assemble other vampires to protect their daughter and prove her identity as Volturi enforcers seek to punish the beloved bloodsucking family for allegedly creating a child vampire.

The new trailer offers a glimpse of the climactic battle scene, as well as Kristen Stewart as newly-transformed vampire Bella Swan, on the front lines in defense of Renesmee. There's a lot of red eyes on that field!

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Movie Review: Apocalyptic Lovebirds

$
0
0

Steve Carell and Keira Knightley may seem like an odd romantic pairing, but Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is far from the most normal of romances. The world is ending in three weeks. Period. There's no avoiding that in the film's opening moments. What sets the tone for the entire film is how that catastrophic factoid is delivered to the audience in the story's opening moments.

Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Carell’s Dodge and his wife are in their car on the side of the road as the radio announces the news. She suddenly opens her door and runs… to beyond what is seen. Dodge turns his head from his wife’s running trajectory and drives away.

It is fascinating to see how filmmaker Lorene Scafaria handles the landscape she has established in terms of story. Would people still show up for work? Will there be riots? Exactly how reflective would you get? Or, would it be possible to let days upon days go by knowing you still had weeks to live without doing anything important at all?

The script by Scafaria is so smart and possesses a sentiment of optimism that is surprisingly sensational given the parameters of the story. Knightley’s Penny is fed up with her significant other, gets up and leaves him. She then meets her neighbor (Carell) for the first time, encouraging and joining Dodge as they head out on the road in the days that are left to find his "girl that got away."

What they discover may be the secret to love, tragically unearthed as the planet is set to be extinct. In the hands of Carell and Knightley, this odd couple seems quite perfectly matched. Perhaps it’s the pending doom approaching, but there is something more. Both actors offer layered performances that take them away from what could be one-note turns and give each character a depth that not only allows us to pull for them romantically, but also to survive the un-survivable.

Stellar supporting players abound in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Gillian Jacobs and TJ Miller work in a Fridays-type restaurant in the middle of nowhere that has a celebratory view of the apocalypse that is downright hilarious. Dodge’s good friends are played with panache by Connie Britton and Rob Corddry, who throw a party that is the definition of responsibility-free living unleashed!

The answers to all of the above mentioned questions find compelling resolutions in Scafaria’s film. It is a piece of work that simultaneously makes you think, humbles and allows us all to give thanks for the fragile world we inhabit.

To Rome with Love Movie Review: We'll Always Have Paris

$
0
0

After the success of Midnight in Paris, could Woody Allen be trying to capture lightning in a bottle two summers in a row with To Rome with Love?

Robert Benigni in To Rome with Love

As he always does, Allen has assembled a stellar cast including a role for himself for the first time in years. To Rome with Love’s ensemble is led by Oscar winners Penelope Cruz and Roberto Benigni, alongside Alec Baldwin, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page, Judy Davis and Alison Pill.

Allen begins his Roman holiday by setting up his staple of multiple human relationship stories. There are the honeymooning Italian newlyweds and the high-priced call girl (Cruz) who permeates their world, plus the famed architect (Baldwin) who returns to relive his youth as imagined through the love triangle of Eisenberg, Gerwig and Page. Benigni's character awakes and finds himself the most famous man in Italy for no reason whatsoever. Then there’s Allen’s plotline: He is traveling to Rome (in classic Allen curmudgeonly fashion) with his wife (Davis) to visit his daughter (Pill) and to meet her Italian fiance and his family. His former opera promoter hears something that will rock his world. His daughter’s fiance has a father who sings like an angel... only in the shower. Allen sees an opportunity of a lifetime, despite the objections of all those involved. That facet of the film is by far its most charming and hilarious.

As is clear, this is no Midnight in Paris, nor should it be. The magic of that film was the combination of Owen Wilson’s performance and the romance for the Parisian landscape of another era filled with the arts’ richest inhabitants. To Rome with Love is a simple story, really. It has themes such as the price of fame, trying to amend regrets from the past and finding one’s truth while facing down what seems like your fate-forged path. These themes are in no way congruent throughout and that sets this film apart from Allen’s last (and highest grossing of his career). That fact does not lessen To Rome with Love -- it is simply a completely different movie.

Allen doesn’t spoon feed the audience where his characters are in the scope of the world he created. It is not clear whether certain aspects are fantasy or real and for that he assumes a deeper insight from his audience. But the problem arises that Allen, the screenwriter, does not give enough information to allow viewers to draw conclusions about those fantastical parts of his plot.

To Rome with Love is solid, but doesn’t blow away the audience. The problem is -- yes, I know I said not to compare -- Allen’s latest is no Midnight in Paris. But, when your bar has been so recently set so high, it’s hard not to at least possess high expectations given the artist’s previous success. That being said, To Rome with Love slightly misses the mark.
