Here Comes the Boom Trailer: Kevin James as an MMA Fighter

In High School, my improv club sold gourmet lollipops to raise money for our yearly show. And I hated doing it. Little did I know that all the teachers were moonlighting as MMA fighters to save extra-curriculars! Now I feel bad for moping around about the lollies.

Check out the first trailer for Here Comes The Boom, starring Kevin James, who also co-wrote the screenplay, as a high school biology teacher who starts competing as a mixed martial artist in order to save the music program from cancellation.

Here Comes the Boom also stars Selma Hayek, Henry Winkler, and Joe Rogan. It is directed by Frank Coraci, known for such comedies as The Wedding Singer, Zookeeper, and Waterboy (check out some Waterboy quotes).

James will lend his voice to Hotel Transylvania, an upcoming computer-animated 3D comedy. Take a look at the first Hotel Transylvania trailer, and catch Here Comes the Boom in theaters October 12.

Beasts of the Southern Wild Exclusive: Quvenzhane Wallis & Dwight Henry Interview

Both Beasts of the Southern Wild stars, Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry, had never acted a moment in their life before being cast in the astounding film. Yet, the duo anchor as powerful a film as Movie Fanatic has seen all year (look for our review later today). Both are Louisiana natives and were selected amongst hundreds of auditioners to lead the cast of a film that chronicles what life is like for a select few who live in what locals call “The Bathtub.” The locale is fictional, but the feel is real. Life is difficult for the island dwellers south of New Orleans. And when a storm hits (like Katrina), it can leave the entire area washed out. The duo play father and daughter and take us inside what it feels like to go from obscurity to silver screen immortality.

Hit and Run Red Band Trailer: Seriously, Don't Watch This at Work

The new red band trailer for Hit and Run starts off sweetly enough, but believe me, it is extremely NSFW. Check it out below, if you're not at work:

Hit and Run stars Dax Shepard as a former getaway driver whose identity is changed as part of the Witness Protection Program. He puts his new identity in jeopardy, however, when he decides to help his girlfriend, played by Kristen Bell, get to Los Angeles.

Bradley Cooper, best known for his work in The Hangover (check out some Hangover quotes) stars as an ex-colleague who Shepard's character helped convict, and who is now out for revenge. Kristen Chenoweth, Tom Arnold (Madea's Witness Protection), and Beau Bridges also star.

Hit and Run premieres August 24. For more, check out the first Hit and Run trailer, with a forward from Shepard and Bell (and without quite as much elderly nudity).

Ted Interview: Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg on MacFarlane Farce

Ted stars Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg first worked together in the action-thriller Max Payne. This time out, they had the task of acting opposite a foul-mouthed teddy bear in the first feature film from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.

“I was a little nervous at first, but once we started getting into it, I felt comfortable pretty quickly,” Wahlberg said of his furry co-star. “It was more of a problem working with Mila. She’s a tough cookie.”

Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis in Ted
Kunis spent much less time opposite the title character. “Mine was very circumstantial, whether the bear was to the right of me or to the left of me or to the front of me. I think Mark had it the hardest,” she said.

One of the scenes in Ted that had to be a serious challenge was when Ted and Wahlberg’s John brawl in a hotel room. It plays for laughs, but it’s as intense as any action sequence.

“I didn’t have to do anything to prepare other than just trust Seth. I just felt so ridiculous flopping around in that room, by myself. But, everybody loves that scene,” Wahlberg said.

The film is utterly hilarious (check out our Ted review). A large part of that is the comic timing of Wahlberg. The actor has developed a serious knack for humor that, he admits, comes from years of soaking in classic TV.

“I grew up watching a lot of old television with my father, like F Troop and Barney Miller. [Det. Stan “Wojo”] Wojciehowicz would probably be the one to best describe one of my comic idols.”

Regardless of his hilarity history, for Wahlberg, it’s about the words on the page that make him appear funny. “It’s all in the material. I approach a comedy the same way I do a drama. I try to make it as real as possible,” he added.

Both Kunis and Wahlberg could take hours extolling the virtues of MacFarlane, particularly the actress who has starred on his animated series for almost a decade.

“From Family Guy to Ted, I think that Seth’s humor is incredibly socially relevant. I think that there’s a certain linear story to his humor. It’s very consistent and it’s smart,” Kunis said.

“He’s brilliant at what he does because he sets people up in low-brow situations with high-brow humor, and that’s one of the hardest things to do. Also, all of his humor is rooted in truth and honesty. From Family Guy’s flashbacks to the songs that some of the characters break into to the fact that there’s a movie coming out about a talking teddy bear that nobody seems to be questioning -- it’s all rooted in truth.”

“He’s the funniest (expletive) I’ve ever met,” Wahlberg added.

Beasts of the Southern Wild Movie Review: Powerful and Poetic

$
0
0

One of the most powerful films of 2012, Beasts of the Southern Wild, has come from the most unlikely of sources: First-time filmmakers Benh Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar. And what if we told you that the leads, as well as much of the cast, had never acted prior to this astounding film? Believe it.

Quvenzhane Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild
Alibar and Zeitlin co-wrote the script and the latter directed in a mesmerizing tale of a band of citizens who lives on one of the islands south of New Orleans. Their life may be poor materials-wise, but rich in many other ways. For one, they adore where they live, affectionately in the movie called the Bathtub. Every time a storm rolls in, whether a hurricane like Katrina or even a tropical storm, they are isolated and left to fend for themselves. They wear that fact like a badge of honor.

The story centers on a father, Wink, and his eight-year-old daughter, Hushpuppy (Dwight Henry and Quvenzhane Wallis). They can only live day to day and it’s hinted that the father may have some mental problems, forcing the daughter to be more self sufficient than most kids ever are. It is a powerful bond, but at times difficult to watch. During one period, Wallis’ character has to fend for herself for days as her father has wandered off.

The young actress is the heart and soul of the film and serves as its narrator. It is uncanny how riveting her performance is, as is that of Henry’s. As little as Hushpuppy is, her presence is enormous -- almost larger than life. There is no question Wallis gives a performance equally as intense as Anna Paquin in The Piano and Tatum O’Neill in Paper Moon. Both of them won Oscars.

Although their community is solid, their infrastructure is feeble in Beasts of the Southern Wild. It seems as if time and society as a whole have forgotten them. One thing is for sure, audiences will never be able to shake the power and grace, emotional gravity and eloquence of a film that is the absolute best we have seen thus far this year.

The movie is beautifully shot and -- despite the sometimes difficulty in witnessing the hard lives portrayed on screen -- serves as a love letter to the region, its natural bounty as well as the resonance of the people who inhabit this almost inhabitable place. No one who experiences Beasts of the Southern Wild will soon forget the visit.

Man, this documentary about child-actor brothers Fred and Ben Savage looks pretty raunchy. And did you know Selma Hayek was their mom?

Oh wait, I think I've misunderstood. Savages is about an ex-Navy SEAL who must battle a Mexican drug cartel to save his kidnapped girlfriend. Check out a featurette (which really plays more like a trailer) for the film below:

Savages stars Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Adam Taylor-Johnson (Anna Karenina), Blake Lively, Selma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro, Emile Hirsch, and John Travolta. Acclaimed filmmaker Oliver Stone directs.

The crime thriller will hit theaters July 6. For more, check out the Savages trailer.

Sissy Spacek was 27 when she filmed the original Carrie. Chloe Moretz is 15--an actual high schooler. Moretz will star in a remake/reboot/reimagining/re-adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 horror novel Carrie.

Carrie began filming today, and it is being called a new adaptation of the novel--one that does not take into account the first film. Moretz plays the title teenager, who discovers she has telekinetic powers and uses them to exact revenge on the classmates who make fun of her.

Chloe Moretz as Abby

Moretz has shot to stardom in the last few years, appearing in films such as Kick-Ass, Hugo, and Dark Shadows, where she played the sullen, solitary teen Carolyn Stoddard. Check out some Dark Shadows quotes here.

Kimberly Peirce, writer/director of Boys Don't Cry and Stop Loss, is directing the film, with a cast that also includes Julianne Moore, Portia Doubleday, and Judy Greer (Jeff Who Lives at Home). The film is set for a March 15, 2013 release.

Magic Mike Interview: Channing Tatum on Stripper Past

Channing Tatum’s life story, at least one small part of it, is coming to life on the big screen in Magic Mike. The budding superstar sat down with Movie Fanatic to talk about his hopes for Magic Mike and how his time stripping in real life contributed to achieving his dreams as an actor and dancer.

Magic Mike: Channing Tatum
Tatum lets us in on how he made his way from male exotic dancer to actor as well as how filming Magic Mike was different than any other experience on a movie set. For one, his co-stars (check out our Matthew McConaughey interview) all cheered for one another as they each filmed their dance scenes.

Movie Fanatic: What was your ultimate goal in making Magic Mike?

Channing Tatum: I just think we’re trying to do our part to objectify men [laughs], for the first time, in movies.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think the message of this film is? As it is a Steven Soderbergh film, it has to have a message.

Channing Tatum: You have the dreams that you want, and then you have to do other jobs until you can get to that dream. Mike, and a lot of these guys, just fell into this thing and it was fun, and then years just ticked on -- as the party was happening. All of a sudden, it’s seven years later and you’re like, “Wow, I don’t really have very much to show for it. I’m not any closer to my dream.” At some point, the party just got in the way and became your life.

Movie Fanatic: Were any of the women playing extras ever a little too into it?

Channing Tatum: You’ve gotta commit. They were there for awhile and they became our friends. You’d get off stage and they’d be like, “That was a really good one!” They were so bad with Matthew that I was like, “Man, did I not bring it?!” The women lost their minds, and we didn’t instruct them to. Matthew brought them right in. As Dallas says, “You’ve gotta bring ‘em in! You’ve gotta connect to every single one of them!”

Movie Fanatic: Was there any apprehension about visiting this part of your life onscreen now that you have moved far away from it, literally?

Channing Tatum: My wife married a stripper, so she knew what she was getting into and she made that a prerequisite for the marriage. I just personally respect everyone for jumping into the thong with both feet and out onto the stage because I’ve done it before, and it was still nerve-wracking for me. Everybody just committed. I wish we had time in the movie to show everybody’s dance because everybody worked so hard on them. It’s a humbling thing to get up there, where you’re left with very little to the imagination, in front of almost 300 people. It’s very, very nerve-wracking.

Movie Fanatic: How was filming this movie (check out the Magic Mike trailer) different than any of your others?

Channing Tatum: With most movies, when you’re done with your scene, you go home. You’re like, “That’s it! I’m good! I’m gonna go home for the day.” That’s not what happened. You wanted to see them do their routine and do it well. Every time that anybody came off stage, you went back and high-fived them and told them what really worked. You were just like, “You murdered that!” It really became a very weird, strange team.

Movie Fanatic: How do you think stripping led you to acting?

Channing Tatum: I was 18 years old. I had worked three jobs and stripping was just one of them. I really liked to dance, obviously, but I didn’t really love taking the clothes off. The world, in itself, was just a very dark world. I really enjoyed performing. It was probably my first performing job, ever.

People Like Us Exclusive Interview: Director Alex Kurtzman Gets Personal

People Like Us creator Alex Kurtzman, after writing Star Trek and Transformers, got a little more personal with his latest project with co-writers Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert. The film was a perfect vehicle for his feature film directorial debut as it deals with a story that is painfully real to the helmer.

Alex Kurtzman Directs Chris Pine on People Like Us Set
Kurtzman met Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to explore his new film, and he talks about what stars Chris Pine, Michelle Pfeiffer and Elizabeth Banks invaluably brought to the project as well as what’s next for him: Think Spider-Man sequel!

With the film now being released on thousands of screens June 29, Kurtzman is full of mixed emotions. It is a truly personal story of what happened when he discovered he had a sister at the age of 30.

“I’m feeling a rainbow of different emotions. It’s just weird that we got to this place. I still can’t believe it. It’s still a little bit out of body. It’s been such a personal journey and now we’re giving it over to the world and that’s kind of a big thing. I’m really nervous. But, I’m also really excited,” Kurtzman said.

The filmmaker was struck with how resonant this story is proving to be. “Chris (Pine) and I were in Atlanta screening the movie for an audience, and as we were leaving the theater, a woman grabbed my arm and said to me, ‘I just need you to know that I met my brother recently and I didn’t know about him and I rejected it completely. I just saw your movie and I just realized I can’t do that.’ I was so moved by that. I feel like that, to me, is the gift of making a movie like this.”

His film (check out the People Like Us trailer) took eight years to bring to the screen, all because of an effort to tell his story, but ensure it’s still entertaining and powerful for audiences.

“It was also just a separating of truth from fiction because a lot of it did happen to me. I met my sister when I turned 30 but my story’s nowhere near as crazy as the movie. So you’re fictionalizing a lot of stuff and yet you’re speaking from an emotionally autobiographical place,” Kurtzman said.

“Figuring out how to take the emotional component and translate it to certain plot elements that don’t betray that emotion took time. It wasn’t immediately apparent how to do it. There was something about collecting the details that I observed around me that I think I could not have done if we were doing it on a clock.”

Key to the success of People Like Us is the casting. Kurtzman scored with Pine, Banks and Pfeiffer. He reported that the sibling chemistry achieved by his leads (Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine interview) brought his own story to cinematic life.

“The thing about Chris and Elizabeth is that they’re both so wildly talented, and they both dedicated themselves completely to their parts, digging as deep as possible to get there. There’s something very magnetic about the two of them individually,” Kurtzman said.

“Those two are so talented that honestly, more than half the time my job was just to say, ‘Let’s go again,’ and see what else they did. I felt it during rehearsals that there was something very spectacular going on between them. They were so graceful and generous in what they gave of themselves in these parts, and the more they slipped into that, the more that electricity came out on screen.”

And then there’s Pfeiffer, who plays Pine’s mother. “I didn’t know what to expect when I heard she was interested. I met her, and within one minute went, ‘There’s nobody else who can do this.’ She is amazing,” Kurtzman added.

Next on Kurtzman’s plate is penning the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. “It has been a blast,” he said.

“Getting to do Spider-Man is like letting your inner kid play again and it’s been really fun. I’m so impressed with the new movie. I think it’s fantastic and I love everyone involved, across the board. The actors are brilliant and wonderful and great people. The producers are amazing and Marc Webb is a genius, so we’re just having a great time.”

Total Recall Movie Trailer: Intrigue! Explosions! Cat Fights!

Director Len Wiseman's remake of Total Recall certainly looks like an explosive thrill ride.

Yes, it's a remake of the successful Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle from 1990, but compared to The Amazing Spider-Man, that's an eternity in reboot terms. Just go with it and watch stuff blow up, okay?

Starring Colin Ferrell and Kate Beckinsale, the film hits theaters August 3.

Judging by the second Total Recall trailer, it's going to be one futuristic, potentially confusing adrenaline rush that won't disappoint. Watch the action below and see for yourself:

A few things Movie Fanatic gleaned from the above preview:

  • Your need for explosions will be satisfied by this summer blockbuster.
  • Women, apparently, have three breasts in this undefined future era.
  • It looks like Beckinsale is part of the Rekall and turns on Farrell.
  • The chemistry between Quaid/Hauser (Ferrell), and Jessica Biel's character is palpable ... while the beatdown she administers on Beckinsale may be the highlight of the picture.

These two new clips for The Amazing Spider-Man bring the running preview content time count to almost 30 minutes. If that bothers you, don't watch these two latest clips. if it doesn't, there's some awesome scenes between Spidey and the Lizard below, one of which is so tense you may need a monkey wrench to watch it.

Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, and Emma Stone star in the Spider-Man reboot directed by Marc Webb. The cast is rounded out by Dennis Leary, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field.

The Amazing Spider-Man is less than a week away from its premiere, on July 3. With The Avengers reaching $600 million in domestic ticket sales, do you think the first of this summer's two giant superhero flicks (the other, of course, being Madea's Witness Protetion) can come close to those numbers?

Spike Lee's career began by exploring his own Brooklyn neighborhood in 1986's She's Gotta Have It and 1989's Do the Right Thing. His latest film returns to Brooklyn, in what is surely at least a partially autobiographical tale. Check out the trailer for Red Hook Summer:

The film tells the story of a 13-year-old Atlanta boy who is sent to live with his grandfather, a deeply-religious Bishop, in the Brooklyn projects. It stars Jules Brown, Clarke Peters, and Nate Parker (Red Tails).

Lee himself moved to Brooklyn from Atlanta as a young boy, and has likely infused some of his own experience into that of his main character, Flik. Lee will be reprising his role as Mookie from Do the Right Thing.

The film will see a limited release on August 10.

The Amazing Spider-Man Interview: Andrew Garfield on Becoming Super

Andrew Garfield chatted with Movie Fanatic recently in New York City and spoke of achieving the rarest of feats by scoring the lead in The Amazing Spider-Man. As a child in Britain, Garfield was obsessed with the webbed wonder. As he stepped into the suit for the first time on the set for director Marc Webb (check out our Marc Webb interview), he carried with him the dreams of millions of kids who aspire to be Spidey.

Andrew Garfield Stars as The Amazing Spider-Man
Garfield takes us behind the mask and into the process, emotions and weight of being Spider-Man.

Movie Fanatic: There’s a long debate in the Spider-Man world, do you think he is a vigilante?

Andrew Garfield: I think that he is a vigilante for a period of this story, this particular story. I think it’s true for any teenager who goes through that amount of tragic events to have those impulses to kick out and rebel and use their powers in a way that they’re not thinking responsibly. What’s cool about this movie is that he discovers the power of what he’s created.

Movie Fanatic: He may inspire audiences with great Peter Parker quotes, but do you think Peter knows what he's doing when he initially creates Spider-Man?

Andrew Garfield: He doesn’t create this symbol with any kind of high-mindedness [laughs]. It was important to me that he started with a heroic impulse without the physical power to do anything with it. He creates it so that he can protect himself because he was searching for his uncle’s killer. He accidentally discovers that he’s created something bigger than him and that can be used for good.

Movie Fanatic: Is that what you admired about him when you were a boy?

Andrew Garfield: That was how I felt growing up. I felt like the underdog and I felt like I was a skinny kid. Now I’m not. Obviously, I’m a huge bruiser [laughs]. I always thought I should have been bigger for some reason because society tells you that. That was something I always identified with for Peter that he always felt stronger on the inside than he did on the outside and there’s nothing better than seeing a skinny guy beat the crap out of a big guy.

Movie Fanatic: As a lifelong fan of Spidey, what was it like to meet (creator) Stan Lee?

Andrew Garfield: He’s given so many kids hope and joy, and he cannot be thanked enough for that. It was like being in a room with Mickey Mouse. It was bizarre. I’ve been nervous for the last two years. It seems like every day there’s been something that’s made me have to suppress shaking. But Stan Lee was a weird one because he wasn’t real, like he’s too iconic to be real.

Movie Fanatic: Given what this part means to you, could you ever relax from the moment you got the part to today when you’re talking about it to us?

The Amazing Spider-Man: Peter Parker Picture
Andrew Garfield: I didn’t. I didn’t sleep very much. It’s embarrassing to say [laughs]. We all have that one fictional character that we care about, and if ever that opportunity came along to play it and do it justice, when that moment comes, you go, “I’m not allowed to think about anything else. It’s given me so much in my life.” And no, I haven’t shaken it off.

Movie Fanatic: Why do you think Spider-Man has been so resonant for decades?

Andrew Garfield: The fact that he goes through the same stuff that I went through -- he’s all of us. He shares that need to kick the walls down irrationally (as seen figuratively in this The Amazing Spider-Man clip), which when you combine that with being a superhero it’s kind of exciting.

Movie Fanatic: Now, it looks cool as hell. But, was that costume difficult to wear at all, despite the dream of donning it someday?

Andrew Garfield: I had many issues with that costume. It’s a weird thing because every actor who plays a superhero is like, “The costume sucked.” Like we should just get together and talk about it [laughs]. How dare we complain, we’re the ones who get to wear it. It’s the dream. But it was so terrible [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: Did you ever hear from Tobey Maguire about you stepping into his shoes?

Andrew Garfield: When I got cast, he sent an email immediately, and it was very, very generous and made me feel like I could take the torch in confidence. We’re all just a part of that family, the Spider-Man family.

Bradley Cooper is 37, Jennifer Lawrence is 21. Just wanted to get that out of the way. Okay, moving on...

Silver Linings Playbook star Cooper as former teacher Pat who moves back in with his parents after spending time in a mental institution. While trying to get his life back on track, he meets Tiffany, played by Lawrence, and the two form an unexpected bond.

Check out the trailer for Silver Linings Playbook:

David O. Russell directs the film, which is an adaptation of the novel by Matthew Quick. Russell's last film, The Fighter, was nominated for seven academy awards, and won two.

While often times a smaller romantic comedy will feature one big name superstar, this film has three, which likely says something about the script. Lawrence has shot to stardom for her role as Katniss in The Hunger Games, and Cooper is best known for the smash-hit Hangover movies (check out some Hangover quotes).

Silver Linings Playbook also stars Robert DeNiro, Chris Tucker, and Julia Stiles. It opens in theaters November 21.

People Like Us Movie Review: We Are Family

$
0
0

Writer-director Alex Kurtzman embodied the golden rule of the arts: Create what you know and magic will happen. Kurtzman’s People Like Us (co-written by Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert) reflects his own personal story of discovering a “secret” family and how that affects a person, particularly as an adult. In the film, Chris Pine is Sam and Elizabeth Banks is Frankie. They don’t know it, but they share the same father and that fact is discovered once he passes away.

Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pine in People Like Us
Frankie reads about it in the Los Angeles paper while Sam is summoned home to attend the funeral. When Sam meets with his father’s attorney, he is handed a shaving kit with $150,000 in it and a message to deliver it to Frankie. Surprise! You have a sister.

The real thing happened to Kurtzman, although it is dramatized greatly in People Like Us. The filmmaker discovered a sister when he turned 30 and the emotions that play out over the course of the movie could not be more real. The key to that fact is the stellar performances turned in by his leads (don’t miss our Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks interview).

Pine and Banks are uncanny as siblings who are only recently discovering their shared lineage. Banks, always amazing, efficiently channels a woman who grew up without a father and is herself a single mother to a tween, while also doing her best to keep her alcoholism in check.

Pine nails it with a sweeping character arc over the film that shows that the Star Trek star is one serious actor. Beginning the movie as a self-obsessed salesman with bulging panache, Sam is confronted with one of those moments in life that can shake you to your core or mold you into a well-rounded adult with your emotions firmly in check. In the hands of Pine, it is a fantastic study in an actor evolving a character impeccably (don’t miss the People Like Us trailer).

And in a role that deserves Oscar attention, Michelle Pfeiffer supports the lead players as Sam’s mother. The long-suffering wife, who now sees more of her husband in her son than she cares to, also takes an arduous character journey that mirrors that of Pine’s. The actress lets it all hang out, wrinkles and all, and gives her most bare-bones performance of her career.

But the true star of the film is the writer-director (Alex Kurtzman exclusive interview). The way he layers the performances while letting the audience into the emotional powerhouse of a story is mesmerizing.

The man who co-wrote a slew of blockbuster movies (Star Trek, The Amazing Spider-Man sequel) shows in his directorial debut why his larger-than-life films work so well. He is a master of weaving character development and story structure all while connecting both to an audience hungry for more by the time the credits roll.

Fun Size follows two girls, Wren and April, whose dreams of going to a cute boy's Halloween party are dashed when Wren's mom charges them with taking her little brother trick-or-treating. And if that weren't bad enough, the two girls lose the kid! Check out the trailer for the film below:

The film stars Victoria Justice and Jane Levy as the two main girls, with Chelsea Handler playing the mom. Johnny Knoxville and Ana Gasteyer also appear.

Levy recently filmed the Evil Dead remake, directed by Fede Alvarez and written by Alvarez and Diablo Cody.

Fun Size hits theaters October 12.
