Ice Age Continental Drift Exclusive Interview: The Wanted Scores a Theme

The Wanted is quickly becoming one of the most popular acts in the world. You can imagine the thrill when the UK band heard that their song Chasing the Sun was tapped to serve as the title theme to Ice Age: Continental Drift, achieving one of their goals. The entire group visited with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview about checking off one of those bucket list moments.

Ice Age Continental Drift Picture
“When we first got into the music business, it was always an aspiration to have a song in a film. We still hadn’t made it through for a couple years and then Ice Age came up with the opportunity and it was like, ‘Wow, that was great.’ We’re really thankful for it,” Tom Parker said. “I think it fits really, really well with what the scene is as well.”

The song itself was already written and it appears that landing Chasing the Sun in the fourth Ice Age was a classic case of serendipity.

“We had the song made earlier and we were on the verge of releasing it and this was offered to us,” Jay McGuiness added.

“We did this pretty fast because it’s an amazing thing to be a part of Ice Age. Basically we accepted it and they showed us where we were going to play and obviously we did it and made a video just to promote it and show off Ice Age: Continental Drift. It was pretty simple and basic. It wasn’t a long thing, which was really kind of nice.”

Max George added that he was amazed that a song that was written without the movie in mind managed to seamlessly fit so well. “We wrote the music before the movie. [Producers] more liked the song directly and thought that it fit well into the movie,” George said. “So we kind of walked in. It was just coincidence more than anything. It did fit in and I feel that it fills up the movie.”

McGuiness never thought they’d be a part of something so enormous… the Ice Age films have made hundreds of millions of dollars. “It’s really flattering, I suppose, that our songs appeal to something so big, because Ice Age is a massive franchise and it’s the fourth movie and it’s got some massive stars in it,” he said. “The fact that our work can relate to something so huge is a huge complement to us.”

Tom Parker believes that the universality of the Ice Age movies is why they are so popular, as shown off in the Ice Age: Continental Drift trailer. “I think everyone can relate to individual characters. I’ve been compared to Scrat several times at least during these interviews over the last hour and a half, which I’m fine with,” Parker said. “I think everyone can relate to every character.”

Nathan Sykes adds that his favorite aspect of the Ice Age series is how they effortlessly add new characters without sacrificing the integrity of those characters we started the franchise with in the 2002 movie.

“I think that’s what's so good about the franchise is that even when they introduce the new characters into the film, there is a way of relating to each and every character but also bringing it back to the strong pack that started the franchise,” he said.

Lastly, we wanted to know which character in Ice Age: Continental Drift is the Wanted’s favorite.

Tom Parker: My favorite character is Scrat.

Jay McGuiness: My favorite character would be Diego.

Max George: Mine would be Shira just because it’s Jennifer Lopez.

Siva Kaneswaran: Mine is the mammoth, because he’s so big and nicely hung!

Nathan Sykes: My favorite character is Sid the sloth.

Until I saw this clip I was like, "they're making a movie out of the Carson Daily MTV show?" But then I realized that was Total Request, not Total Recall. I also realized I shouldn't drink before 10 a.m.

The new clip from the action remake expands on a scene we've had a pretty good look at in the Total Recall trailers. Check out the moment Doug Quaid's life changes forever:

Colin Farrell stars as Quaid (a role originally filled by Arnold Schwarzenegger), with Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Brian Cranston, Bill Nighy, and John Cho rounding out the cast. The film is based on the Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember it for You Wholesale.

Total Recall hits theaters August 3. And if that clip wasn't enough for you, here's the new international poster. Check it out:

Cosmopolis Trailer Drops: Something Stupendous and Awful

David Cronenberg has adapted "unfilmable" books in the past. In 1991 he adapted the rambling drug-induced-dream-like novel Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs for the big screen. Now, he's tackling a Don DeLillo book about a wealthy man in Manhattan traffic seeking a haircut.

Cosmpolis stars Robert Pattinson as that wealthy man, named Eric Packer. It premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival to mixed reactions. Check out the trailer below:

While the film is technically about a man seeking a haircut, the eccentric thriller focuses on the immense monetary losses Packer faces throughout the day due to his bets against the strength of the Yen, with the rest of his life falling apart as well.

Jay Baruschel, Paul Giamatti, Kevin Durand, and Juliette Binoche also star. Giamatti recently appeared in the jukebox musical Rock of Ages, while Durand is set to star in the upcoming film Resident Evil: Retribution.

Cosmopolis is set for limited release in the United States beginning August 17.

Q is back! The head of R&D at the MI6 has been absent from all of the Daniel Craig Bond films until this point. Take a first look at the new Q, played by Ben Whishaw:

Q Skyfall

The last actor to play Q was John Cleese in Die Another Day. In fact, most of the actors to play Q have been older men. But it makes sense for a tech guy to be young and nerdy. Enter Ben Whishaw.

Skyfall is the 23rd Bond film. It stars Craig and Whishaw, along with Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, and new Skyfall Bond Girl Berenice Marlohe.

Sam Mendes directs, in his first foray into the world of Bond (or any action film for that matter). Skyfall comes to theaters and IMAX November 9. For more, take a look at the Skyfall trailer.

The Dark Knight Rises also stars Christian Bale as Batman and Tom Hardy as Bane, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Marion Cotillard also star.

The Dark Knight Rises premieres July 20. It will be the final installment of the Christopher Nolan Batman series.

Late Night host Jimmy Fallon took one of the most darkly serious trailers of the year and made it hilarious, just by replacing the audio. Take a look:

Fallon does a pretty dead on Pee-wee Herman impression, and the voice does wonders for The Dark Knight Rises trailer.

The film stars Christian Bale as Batman, along with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as the villain Bane. Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Marion Cotillard also star.

Viewers can probably expect a few light chuckles from The Dark Knight Rises, but nothing as outright silly as this when it premieres in just one week's time! Catch the film in theaters July 20.

Star Trek 2: Karl Urban Updates on Sequel

0
0

Karl Urban is here at Comic-Con to talk about the finer points of his sci-fi epic Dredd. We’ll have more on that soon, but had to bring you a scoop on what the actor -- known for playing Bones in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek -- said about returning to the Enterprise for Star Trek 2.

Karl Urban in Star Trek
“It was four years since we made the last Star Trek. I remember coming to work the first day and I thought I had been transported in a time warp and Obama was about to be elected again. I walked on set and there was the same cast, same crew, same extras. It was so trippy, so weird, but so wonderful to start that again. It was surreal,” Urban said.

The second time out found the cast and crew much more comfortable with what they were tackling than the first time around.

“Everyone was a lot more relaxed with each other and when you develop a short hand with colleagues that you have been through the wars with, that’s how it felt. It was really interesting to see the evolution in everybody’s process.”

Recently, Urban got in a little trouble revealing that Gary Mitchell was the Star Trek 2 villain. When it comes to any further information, the actor is rightfully coy. “I’m not at liberty to discuss that,” Urban said.

When pressed to discover how much trouble he was in for letting something slip from the super-secret set, he gave us a glimpse. “There might have been a call or two.”

He then teased that the first video images from the highly anticipated sequel will be available for fans any moment now. “There will be some footage from the new Star Trek,” Urban added.

Hope he doesn’t get in trouble for revealing that.

Frankenweenie Interview: Tim Burton Loves Comic-Con

Tim Burton adores coming to Comic-Con. In fact, he recalls when it was in its infancy. “I remember coming to this in the late 1970s when it was at the Holiday Inn,” Burton said at the annual celebration of all things pop culture. “It’s amazing what it’s turned into. There’s something very magical about this place.”

Tim Burton Frankenweenie Exhibit
What it has grown into is a chance for Hollywood to meet the press and talk about upcoming films. Burton is here talking about a passion project like no other, Frankenweenie.

“It’s always meant something to me. To be honest with you, stop motion, black and white with 3D advancement, it seemed like the right time for the project. Even though it’s something I did a long time ago, it feels new and special,” Burton said.

The filmmaker made the short decades ago. In terms of turning one of his first films into a full-length feature, one thing remained congruent. “The heart of the story is the same,” Burton said.

The people and creatures from the initial effort have remained ingrained in his mind and kept making the feature from feeling somehow disjointed from his initial intent.

“It’s just having some of these other characters that were rattling around in my head. It didn’t make it seem like it was a different thing. It doesn’t feel like it was a short that was drawn into a longer thing. We can go deeper into the other kids and things, it just felt theatrical,” Burton said.

“These were characters that I just sort of have. I just never know what they’ll fit into. There were always some characters that I was playing around with. This goes back to school and I remembered some of the kids I went to school with and the teachers. Growing up with those Universal horror films, like House of Dracula, House of Frankenstein -- a lot of it had to do with things I wanted to work with that I love.”

Although animation technology has shot to the moon and back in terms of advances, Burton adores the stop motion animation that he used on the short long ago, utilized on Nightmare Before Christmas, and is once again revisiting the medium as can so beautifully be seen in the Frankenweenie trailer. “That’s what we love about it. Technology may have improved, but it’s still the same. It goes back to the beginning of cinema. It’s a technique that is still an animator moving a puppet at 24 frames per second,” he said.

“As much as technology will do anything, there is something about the simplicity, excitement of that, seeing something come to life. It’s magical.”

One thing that is often seen throughout Burton’s family film work is the inescapable attachment at least one of his characters has to their dog. As seen on the Frankenweenie poster, with its title character front and center, his latest is no different.

“When you’re young, it’s the first pure relationship that you have. I was lucky enough to have a pet -- it is something that goes right to your heart. It seemed like a natural connection,” Burton said.

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie Still
Before we let him go, given the arrival of The Dark Knight Rises soon, Burton is asked about his Batman and details how much of a risk it seemed at the time.

“I remember when I was doing Batman, how worried they were that it was too dark. Now, it looks like a light-hearted romp. Batman on ice, you know?” he said and laughed.

Because of films such as Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and dozens more, Burton is a filmmaker who it is easy to see the love thrown towards him in Hall H at Comic-Con. This year would be no different as moments after he left us, another standing "O" would greet him. “It’s amazing. Wish my family would treat me that way,” Burton said and laughed.

“When I come through the door when I get home, nobody says anything."

Breaking Dawn Part 2 Interview: The Cullens Get Nostalgic

0
0

The family at the heart of The Twilight Saga touched down in San Diego at Comic-Con for the final time. The Cullens, aka Peter Facinelli, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed and the matriarch Elizabeth Reaser, are here talking about their emotions concerning the final chapter of the Stephenie Meyer series, Breaking Dawn Part 2.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 Photo
One thing that immediately impresses is Facinelli is quite the joker. When the clan is reminiscing about the first film, the actor who plays the patriarch of the Cullens is shocked at his co-stars’ accommodations versus his when the series first started.

“You had hotels? I had to stay in a tent,” he said as everyone laughed.

Facinelli can turn reminiscent quickly as he recalled the first time the Twilight family met.

“I remember we had a lot of rehearsals in the original Twilight to learn each other, to kind of experience each other so we could all be like a family. So we spent a lot of time together,” Facinelli said. What bonded them was also something that would, onscreen once they were on the Vancouver set, center around an iconic scene in that first film.

“I remember going to that indoor warehouse thing and we played baseball. That was so much fun. They gave us sneakers. We got to play indoor baseball.”

Twilight: Cullens Baseball
The Cullen family showed its cinematic unity with that scene in Twilight, and the glue that holds them together has only increased since Kristen Stewart as Bella became a part of the family in Breaking Dawn Part 1 and is now a vampire -- as seen in the Breaking Dawn Part 2 trailer. Lutz has been ready for this chapter since reading it in Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling book. It seems that Bella and Emmett have a "guess who's stronger" contest.

“I’ve been looking forward to shooting that scene since day one. I read all the books and was like, ‘Hopefully we get to make Breaking Dawn because you finally get to see a scene with Emmett and Bella. Then to see and work with Kristen who is a brilliant actress and see her transform from human Bella to vampiric Bella, it was fun. I’m really looking forward to seeing that scene in the movie and I know the fans will also,” Lutz said.

"I know that Emmett doesn’t have the most lines but he’s such an influential character," he said, laughing. "I just love playing him. It’s just great showing the protective sides and how much he loves being a vampire and how much he is rooting for Bella to become one so he can roughhouse with her until she kicks his butt and that’s no fun for him."

When Reaser arrived on set, she admitted the entire cast and crew had no inclination that they were on the verge of creating a pop culture lightning bolt. “We had no idea what we were doing, what we were getting into. We thought we were doing this little vampire movie in Portland,” Reaser said. “There was a lot of silliness, a lot of hijinx and bad behavior.”

Cast chemistry is what Rathbone believes has everything to do with how the series became so successful. “The first one was everybody coming together, getting together for the first time and doing those epically long Cullen family shoots. Whenever there’s a scene with the Cullen family, those scenes take two days to do,” Rathbone said.

The rest was history.

Reed credits Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, the woman who cast the film and first had the arduous task of bringing a beloved book to life.

“I think that one of the skills of that job is being able to walk into an empty room and have that kind of vision and fill it up and see things that aren’t there and have that imagination,” Reed said. “I feel like a lot of directors I’ve worked with, not on this saga but just in general, don’t have that. She took all of us and cast us based on who we were, not how we looked, which is why we’re all sitting here.”

When the series ended, Greene had to have something to remember a large and influential period in her life. “I took my Alice Cullen necklace with me, the original one, which is pretty cool to have,” Greene said.

The Cullen Family
She, almost more than the rest of the clan, was too thrilled to be talking Twilight at Comic-Con for the final time and proud of where they came from and have gone. “This is the first event that is kind of marking the beginning of the end of Twilight. It’s the last Comic-Con we’re going to come to for Twilight, so I guess it’s kind of sinking in,” Greene added.

“Luckily we have it captured on film forever and I think our fans are really incredible and they seem to be following us into new projects that we’re doing and really supporting us, so that’s pretty neat.”

Before the chat with the cinematic Cullen clan ends, Lutz still wants everyone to know that Bella is not stronger than him. “Emmett’s a great actor, that’s why he let her win,” he said, and everyone laughed.

“I’m three times the size of Kristen!”
