Man of Steel: Footage Debuts at Comic-Con

Zack Snyder, director of Man of Steel, proudly took the stage at Comic-Con to not only introduce the crowd to his Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), but also to show off the film’s first footage and its power (below).

Man of Steel Poster

The teaser footage felt very Batman Begins-ish, and we can see why as Christopher Nolan serves as Man of Steel’s executive producer.

What was shown included images of Kent as a young man wearing the iconic red cape, him saving a school bus from dropping into a lake and then a ragged-looking Cavill making that iconic trip to the Arctic to learn more of his fate.

The Hall H crowd was treated to shots of Cavill in the costume as he flies to rescue someone falling from a building and then there’s the compelling footage of Superman being escorted by a stern security team. The most awesome part of the visuals that gave us chills was the voice-over narration split between Russell Crowe, as Superman’s father, and Kevin Costner, who is Kent’s adoptive paternal influence. We also wonder: Was that a hologram of Marlon Brando as Jor-El?!

Also seen in the clip were Amy Adams’ Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as General Zod.

Once the lights came up, Cavill was introduced to a frenzied response. To say in person he very much looks the Superman role is an understatement.

We also learned that the footage seen was from the trailer, which will debut before The Dark Knight Rises July 20!

Marvel Announces Sequel Titles, Ant-Man & Guardians of the Universe

Marvel took over Hall H at the convention center at Comic-Con and that sound you heard all over the world was 6,000 people’s jaws dropping. The highlights: Ant-Man is on, Guardians of the Universe is heading into production, new logos abound and Chris Evans' Captain America and Chris Hemsworth's Thor sequels both get unique names.

We don’t know what’s bigger: The announcement that Ant-Man is officially a go, or the fact that the next story from the Marvel cannon would be Guardians of the Galaxy.

The studio also released concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Kevin Feige must have felt like Santa Claus himself with all the joy he was extolling. The Marvel head announced names and release dates for two of its newer franchises. Thor: The Dark World lands November 8, 2013 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives April 4, 2014. New logos for both were released and we’ve got them.

Finally, after Robert Downey Jr. surprised the crowd (photo above), it was announced that after we adored Iron Man in The Avengers, Iron Man 3’s villain would in fact be the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Yes, we knew that the character would be in the film and who would portray him, but to officially hear that he is the central villain of the third Iron Man film is one great final present from Feige to fans.

Total Recall Interview: Colin Farrell and Cast Return to Recall

The stars of Total Recall and their director, Len Wiseman, landed at Comic-Con and talked to us about their remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger 1990 classic.

Colin Farrell and Kate Beckinsale in Total Recall
Wiseman promised a different world, but one that still pays tribute to the original. “Part of the originality from the script, those characters were in there. Things are definitely drawn from the films as well as the short stories. I was just really intrigued by the way that the characters were dealt with in this one,” Wiseman said.

“They were familiar characters but done in a different context. The short answer was that the characters were alive in the first draft that was presented to me.”

Wiseman's use of larger-than-life sets allowed the cast to further wrap their heads around this futuristic world. “He likes to do as much as he can practically. That's building sets that feel like they're real,” Kate Beckinsale said.

“We've got these incredible sets, hover cars that feel dangerous and scary that we're in. All of that stuff really helped me. It felt terrifying, like it was real.”

Colin Farrell felt that the reality-grounded nature of the shoot allowed the world we've seen in the Total Recall trailer to feel less like they were making a blockbuster. “There's a whole canvas of extraordinary toys and effects and huge concepts that are involved in telling the story. But as an actor you just kind of approach it. You treat it the same as an independent film. It's just a little more physical,” Farrell said.

Jessica Biel concurred with Farrell’s sentiment and for her, it also added to allowing an emotional connection to be developed with their audience.

“It's also emotionally appealing because it felt like yes, this is a world that's in the future and we don't have some of the technology we have now. But emotionally it's so appealing because it felt like yes, this is a world that is in the future,” Biel said.

“We don't have some of the technology we have, but emotionally... it was just a human experience. It's extremely relatable and it's just really grounded.”

Beckinsale adored teaming up with her director husband again on Total Recall, but was pleasantly surprised that the part he wanted her for was the wife of Farrell, who turns into a complete villain.

“Len and I aren't really talking a lot after he said, ‘There's this part of playing the bitch. I was thinking of putting you in it,’” Beckinsale said and laughed.

“I think as the lead you have to be part of exposition. But, as a villain you get to be a character that messes everybody up. Your motives are your own. It is fun to open up that dark side.”

When it came to the original, Wiseman admits it was just a blueprint, and this futuristic trip will be a completely different ride.

“There were things in the original script that are different -- like they aren't going to Mars. So that was a big departure already. There were things being brought into the script from the original that I wanted to see in this version of it. I actually made a list and I just wanted to write down the things that stayed with me over the years,” Wiseman said.

“I put that together and then I watched the original again, making sure some of those things that stuck with me for awhile make their way into the film. Some things are more apparent, but some of the things are so buried in there. I'm very curious to see if some of the hardcore fans will be able to see what those are. I'm excited to see if they're able to pick up on them.”

Ever the joker, Beckinsale interjects… utterly stunned.

“There's another movie called Total Recall?” Beckinsale said and laughed. “You're (expletive) kidding me!”

The Hobbit Interview: Peter Jackson Not Done with Middle Earth?

Peter Jackson had us beyond thrilled when he first debuted The Hobbit poster, much less each subsequent piece of news. He and his creative team behind The Hobbit enlightened at Comic-Con to let us know what to expect from the highly anticipated prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

Peter Jackson Photo
The biggest news to come out of Peter Jackson and his appearance at this year's Comic-Con: Although the production of The Hobbit twin movies is completed, he is not done. Could there be a third?

"It's very premature. I mean we have an incredible source material with the appendices because The Hobbit is obviously a novel but we also have the rights to use this 125 pages of additional notes where Tolkien expanded the world of The Hobbit published at the end of Return of the King," Jackson said.

In the last few weeks, he revealed, those 125 pages have been a creative force Jackson could not ignore.

"We've used some of it so far. And just in the last few weeks as we've been wrapping up the shooting and thinking about the shape of the story, Fran (Walsh, Jackson's partner) and I have been talking to the studio about other things we haven't been able to shoot and seeing if we can persuade them to do a few more weeks of shooting -- probably more than a few weeks actually, next year," Jackson announced.

"And what form that would actually end up taking, well the discussions are pretty early. So there isn't really anything to report but there's other parts of the story that we'd like to tell that we haven't been able to tell yet."

Where The Lord of the Rings was written for adults, The Hobbit is more of a children's book. Jackson clearly wants his films to be congruent in tone, so don't look for a softening of the feel of his Middle Earth series.

"I don't want to make a children's story to go into The Lord of the Rings so we are providing a balance," Jackson admitted.

Jackson also sought to capture the humor that permeated Tolkien's book.

"A lot of the comedy and the charm comes from the characters. You're dealing with Bilbo Baggins who is a bit more reluctant to go on an adventure than Frodo was... and with Dwarves who have a personality and camaraderie all of their own. There's a lot of humor. But, there are still some serious themes involved."

Martin Freeman Stars as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit
By filming more, with the help of Tolkien's The Return of the King appendix, Jackson seeks to fill in some plot gaps from The Hobbit novel, maybe in a third film.

"We've used more source material than The Hobbit. For instance, in The Hobbit, when Gandalf mysteriously disappears for chapters, it was never really explained where he's gone. Much later Tolkien filled in those details. In these appendices he did talk about what happened. And it was altogether a lot darker and more serious than what is written in The Hobbit."

Oz the Great and Powerful: Mila Kunis & Michelle Williams on Wizardly Tale

Sam Raimi has paired quite a pair of actresses in Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams as showcased in the Oz the Great and Powerful trailer. The two stars of the recent Oscar-nominated Black Swan and My Week with Marilyn, respectively, are immediately ready to extol all the praise on their director.

Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis Photo
“Sam is fantastic. I don’t know where to begin. I would do Craft Service for Sam, if he asked me to,” Kunis said.

“He is probably one of the funniest, sweetest, most gentle human beings that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Aside from being incredibly talented, he is so sincere about the projects that he chooses and the people that he casts. He’s so supportive of everybody around him -- of his crew, most importantly, and of his cast -- that he’s incredibly inspiring to work with. You go to work and you want to make him happy. I think that having that, every day, on a 17-hour-long day, is the greatest gift you can give anybody.”

After sitting patiently, waiting to give her two cents on Raimi, Williams added, "You called the cinematic genius part right," she said and turned to her co-star.

“I have never made a movie like this before. I’ve never made such a big movie before. I didn’t know what it was going to be like. I didn’t know if the things that interest me and the things that concern me, Sam would have time for or patience for. And not only did he have time and patience for them, at the beginning when we were rehearsing, but he had time and patience for them on the 17th hour of the sixth day. I found him to be a collaborator and a friend and a confidant, and a partner in everything. I felt like it was a very holistic experience for me. It was a real melding of my work life and my personal life, my film family and my real family.”

Kunis is coy when describing her role. “I don’t want to give away exactly what my character is. You could never replicate, nor would you ever want to. She’s so iconic and so fantastic, in her own right,” Kunis said. Heading into filming, to say she was a little fearful is too tame a description. “Truly, I was frightened. The only thing that I could do was try to be as honest to the character as I possibly could.”

The film that spawned Oz the Great and Powerful has a special spot in the hearts of its two leads, especially for Kunis, born in the Ukraine.

Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams Photo
“One of the first films I ever saw in the States, in 1991, was The Wizard of Oz. It was probably the first movie, as a kid, that I truly gravitated towards and loved so much so that my parents, in the process of me learning English, decided to get me the Return to Oz book -- as my very first book to read in English that wasn’t a picture book,” she proudly said.

“I do have a weird connection to the original Wizard of Oz, including the original books. That was the first book that I read.”

Williams is touched to even be a part of the world that contains the Judy Garland classic. “My association with the movie is probably like everyone’s association with the movie. You see it over and over again,” the Oscar nominee said. “For this moment in time, you get to walk in the footsteps of this very beloved character -- it feels like a real honor.”

Even so familiar with the story, Williams returned to the text and dove into discovering her witchy character. “I read them very carefully and with a highlighter, underlining things about Glinda and turns of phrases that she might use,” Williams said. Even minute details were fertile ground for inspiration. “Even how she would wear her hair I found very useful.”

Seeing as it was more or less the only film premiering this Comic-Con weekend, it's not surprise that Ice Age: Continental Drift finished the weekend in first place. That's not to diminish anything form the film's success. The fourth installment of the popular 3D computer animated franchise earned a cool $46 million in its first three days in theaters.

Finding Nemo 2 has a director! After directing the live-action flop that was John Carter, Andrew Stanton is returning to his animated roots.

Stanton directed the first Finding Nemo, along with A Bug's Life and Wall-E. He reportedly got the job after offering Disney a great story for the sequel.

Finding Nemo 3D Still

Finding Nemo is one of the best-loved Pixar films, and is the second highest-grossing feature Pixar has made, behind Toy Story 3. There are no plot or casting details as of yet, and knowing Pixar, they will likely keep those things under pretty strict wraps for a while.

A sequel was originally being developed back in 2005, but it was cancelled due to internal disagreement. To relive the original film, browse through our Finding Nemo quotes page.

The Hobbit: Martin Freeman & Peter Jackson Dish Details

After wowing the Hall H crowd with 12 minutes of The Hobbit footage and Peter Jackson making news, the director and Martin Freeman (Bilbo) sat down for an interview to talk the finer points of their prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

Peter Jackson and Martin Freeman The Hobbit
Movie Fanatic: First off, Martin, this is your first trip to Comic-Con. What are your thoughts?

Martin Freeman: Well, I’ve never been to Comic-Con before and it was lovely to have that. It’s fulfilling my expectations about what I’ve heard about Comic-Con and exceeding them as well.

Movie Fanatic: How about that response to the footage in Hall H?

Martin Freeman: I was struck by just how emotional people were about the film, about anticipating the film. You know with each question there came a kind of preamble of what the previous films have meant in people's lives. So, all clichés aside, it’s a really nice thing to be a part of something that actually touches people -- genuinely touches people. It's quite a lovely thing.

Movie Fanatic: Martin, you’ve done other literal applications before, like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. How can you compare the experiences?

Martin Freeman: It’s even more green-screened this time. They are different apart from the fact that they have a fantastical element to them. They’re literally different worlds. This Hobbit experience is genuinely unlike anything that I’ve ever done and unlike anything I’m likely to do again -- just the breadth of scale and time, being in a completely different hemisphere than I’m used to. It’s like a huge chunk of your life. So that alone makes it different from anything else. The budget makes it different. You’re constantly walking onto sets where what you're walking on and acting on would have taken up the entire budget of any other film I’ve done. So, just the scale of it is quite phenomenal.

Movie Fanatic: Peter, were there technical advances that came along since the trilogy that enhanced your ability to film The Hobbit?

Peter Jackson: The technology that advanced the most is really the fact that we did a lot of miniature shooting on Lord of the Rings. All the structures of Middle-Earth were really miniatures. They were quite large. But you’re limited to what you can do with them. Now, all miniatures are done with CG. And now you can do things like sweep over doorways, and all these things you could have never dreamed of doing before. That’s actually one of the most profound differences.

Movie Fanatic: Peter, how does The Hobbit show Gollum with the advanced technology and the fact that he’s 70 years younger?

Peter Jackson: We wanted consistency with how Gollum looked throughout the films, but since Avatar, there has been built a very sophisticated motion control system for motion capture -- specifically around the facial system -- which Gollum inherited. His facial gestures will be more pure.

Peter Jackson on The Hobbit Set

Movie Fanatic: Martin, do you see Bilbo as the eyes and ears of the audience in The Hobbit?

Martin Freeman: That’s a good question. He does serve as being the audience's way in. He is the reluctant hero who ends up being a hero by accident. They are archetypal people who stay home usually.

Movie Fanatic: Was it awkward filming knowing that you were much smaller than everyone else, especially the massive Gandalf?

Martin Freeman: We got pretty used to looking two feet above Ian’s eye. But, among all of us, we are just the heights we are. So it doesn’t really occur to us very often.

Movie Fanatic: Was it always that easy, or was there ever an initial moment where you wondered how this would work?

Martin Freeman: Actually, the first time we ever shot a scene with Gandalf, he was in a completely different room. I thought, "This is ridiculous. Who are these people? Why are they making me do this?" And then I saw it and went, "Wow, this is actually brilliant." We rehearsed it and rehearsed it until it became normal. So your whole frame of reference of how you work in a film shifts. It becomes rather easy actually.

Elysium Interview: Matt Damon & Jodie Foster on Futuristic Thriller

Director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has the most intriguing of concepts centering his next film. His Elysium stars, Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, landed at Comic-Con and told us as much about it as they could. You see, the film about a futuristic world where the rich all live on a luxury space station while the poor and middle class fight over the scraps that is otherwise known as modern life on Earth, is surrounded by secrecy.

Neill Blomkamp, Jodie Foster and Matt Damon Picture
“It’s a tough trick to be able to create an intelligent movie that has socio-political commentary, and also has the emotional and moving stuff, at the same time. That’s something that Neill does,” Foster said of the film’s subject.

She promises fans of Blomkamp's previous effort, with its great District 9 quotes, will find a whole new world. “This film is very different than District 9, and addresses some of those issues in a very different way, but they share that mixture of sensibilities.”

Damon stressed that Elysium is still meant to take audiences away. “I think it, first and foremost, will be really entertaining and really work on that level. It certainly has a lot of relevance,” Damon added, although he does stress that current events find congruency in the film.

“Funnily enough, the whole terminology of the 99-percent and the 1-percent wasn’t even there when we started. I just remember Neill, the first time I met him, said, ‘I grew up in South Africa and I immigrated to Canada when I was 18. And to go from the third world to the first world, at that age, absolutely changed the way that I look at the world.’”

Although there are similarities between our current world and the future we’re heading for, Foster and Damon caution this isn’t necessarily what Blomkamp believes is our destined future days. “Well, I probably won’t be here,” Damon said and laughed. “I don’t think this would be Neill’s vision of what the world would really look like in 140 years,” Damon said. “This is just a dystopian fantasy.”

Foster concurs.

“There are lots of futurists that spend their whole life trying to figure out who we’re going to be in 40, 50, 60, 100 years. That’s the great thing about science fiction. When you look at The Matrix, 15 years ago, I feel like we’re living that now. Obviously, it’s allegorical, so they took it to a different extreme, but we are plugged in and living virtual lives, and have all of our connectivity done virtually,” Foster added.

Matt Damon Elysium
Regardless of how Elysium is received (Blomkamp’s last film earned a Best Picture nod), Damon feels he has grown as an actor and as an individual simply by working with the man.

“A lot of it was really interesting. Every time I work with a great director, I just learn a lot. The level of detail that Neill had gone into was just really great,” Damon said. “I feel really lucky. After I saw D9, Neill immediately went to the top of the list of people that I wanted to work with. I feel lucky that it came around so quickly to me.”

Foster simply heard that the director of one of her favorite films was making Elysium and immediately threw her hat in. “I saw District 9 and I jumped up and said, ‘This is a perfect film. I want to find this guy.’ That’s actually what happened,” Foster said. “A little bit after that, I saw the script for Elysium and, lo and behold, there was a role for a woman. I was like, ‘It sounds good to me!’”

Steven Spielberg's upcoming biopic Lincoln will focus on the last few months of the President's life, as opposed to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which focused on his vamp-axin' days.

DreamWorks Pictures has given Lincoln a release date. The film will come out in select theaters November 9, with a wide release a week later on November 16.

Lincoln combines one of our generation's greatest actors, one of our generation's greatest directors, and one of our country's greatest presidents: David Spade, Rob Zombie, and Millard Fillmore. Er wait, that's the wrong movie.

This one stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln, with Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) as their son Robert. James Spader, Hal Holbrook, and Tommy Lee Jones (Men In Black 3)  also star.

Now, Morgan is in talks to pen the screenplay for an upcoming Warner Bros. film about Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. Hefner himself tweeted yesterday that he had a "good meeting" with Morgan about the project.

There is no word yet on what portion of Hefner's life the film will cover, or who will play the larger-than-life millionaire. Renner is an able replacement, however, as he is coming off the huge success that was The Avengers, where he played Hawkeye. You can stick Hawkeye on your desktop by downloading his Avengers wallpaper.

The Bourne Legacy will be released August 10. Check out this Bourne Legacy trailer for more.
