Frankenweenie Exclusive: Nassor, Burgemeister, and Rzykruski Debut

Disney is premiering three new character posters exclusively on Movie Fanatic from Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. The film is based on one of Burton's first short films and follows Frankenstein’s son Victor who is so distraught after his dog Sparky dies, that he re-animates him in a manner that would make papa proud. As seen in the Frankenweenie trailer, this stop motion film is pure Burton brilliance.

Our first photo is of Nassor (voiced by Martin Short) and his ghouly self. Nassor is highly intelligent, serious and intense. He takes a darker, more doomsday view on life than the other kids in New Holland. Nassor is instantly skeptical of the rumors surrounding Victor’s experiments with electricity, but once convinced, he is zealous in his quest to obtain Victor’s secrets.

Nassor Frankenweenie
Next up is Mr. Rzykruski (voiced by Martin Landau), someone who is described as the new science teacher at New Holland Elementary School. He has a thick, Eastern European accent and a unique way of explaining things. He connects with his students; however, parents misunderstand his passionate teaching style.

Mr. Rzykruski Frankenweenie
Finally, Movie Fanatic brings you exclusively the debut of Mayor Burgemeister (also voiced by Short). He is Frankenstein’s next-door neighbor and Mayor of New Holland. A crotchety fuss-bucket, he is fanatical about his garden and can’t stand Sparky or anything else that threatens the perfection of his tulips.

Look for more from Movie Fanatic about Frankenweenie as the film's release date of October 5 gets ever closer.

The Bourne Legacy: Watch Three New Clips

Jeremy Renner takes over the Bourne series from Matt Damon, starring as Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy. Renner is coming off the huge smash success that was The Avengers, where he played Hawkeye (check out his Avengers wallpaper here), and his roll in Bourne may just solidify his career as an action star.

The new film also stars Edward Norton, Joan Allen, and Rachel Weisz. Weisz is set to appear in next year's Oz: The Great and Powerful as Evanora, the Wicked Witch of the East. Watch the Oz: The Great and Powerful trailer for a look.

The Bourne Legacy premieres on August 10. Universal Pictures has released three new clips from the film, which you can watch below:

The Watch: Ben Stiller Talks Joy of Comedy Dream Team

As Ben Stiller sits to talk to Movie Fanatic about his experience making The Watch, it is clear that the comic camaraderie with his co-stars was the biggest joy. “I love working with these guys,” Stiller said of his The Watch cast: Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade.

Ben Stiller in The Watch
“It’s great to work with the people who make you laugh and who are funnier. I’m just a fan of these guys.”

Stiller reported that although they worked on a certain 2004 gymnasium game comedy classic, it was time to reunite -- and this time as comic compatriots instead of rivals.

“Vince and I had a really fun time working on Dodgeball together and it was exciting to have a chance to do something... It had been a while for us, so it was exciting to have a chance to do something new together and being in a totally different kind of relationship, too.”

The actor said he hopes that the fun the actors were having making the film comes through onscreen. “They are all just really funny guys, and when you’re a fan of somebody that really helps, especially a movie like this. I felt it was going to have the ability for us to have fun with each other and feel like you want to hang out with these guys,” Stiller said.

If The Watch trailer is any indication, their joy comes across loud and clear. “We were actually enjoying it, the process. I hope that will translate.”

Vaughn, Stiller, Hill and Ayoade star as a suburban Ohio Neighborhood Watch. The group is formed when a security guard at the Costco that Stiller manages is murdered in the most unusual of ways. Feeling that the cops are clueless, the quartet head into action… and what they discover is that the death was not a murder at all -- it’s the beginning of a full-on alien invasion.

Stiller believes at the end of the day, The Watch is just a comedy about four guys and their interpersonal relationships. “I think this film is more about these guys hanging out and how they affected each other,” Stiller said.

“I do think there is an emotional connection these guys do have by this and end up being together. They show up for each other over and over again, but it’s not too sappy in that way or anything.”

The Watch Cast
Although The Watch could be seen as a combination of sci-fi and comedy, a la Men in Black, Stiller only sees it as a singular sensation: One funny film.

“I feel like first and foremost the movie is a comedy. The action in the movie has to be believable -- and you should believe the aliens, but just enough that you can have the fun of the movie,” Stiller said.

“I feel like when people come to a movie like this, they want to laugh and they are not necessarily looking for us to be these sorts of kick ass/bad ass hero guys. They want to feel like it makes sense for the movie, and the comedy of it. Especially the last part of the movie, we were trying to find as much humor within all these action moments.”

One of the most hysterical scenes involves Stiller’s Evan sprinting towards a potential suspect. It’s a running style that recalls a certain superstar. “I think Tom Cruise’s running has a huge impact on the world. I mean let’s face it, culturally, everybody wants to run like Tom Cruise,” Stiller said and laughed.

"I think Evan is probably a Tom Cruise fan, and when he sees his moment to run after the alien, he goes into his full Cruise mode.”

The Possession Trailer: Once the Box is Open, People Die

The Possession is a new horror film based on the true story of a family faced with unspeakable evil. Check out the trailer for the film:

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick star as Clyde and Stephanie, a couple whose daughter Em becomes  obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. When Em starts to show signs of possession, they learn that the box was built to contain a dybbuk, an evil spirit that preys on a human host.

Morgan is best known for his roll as The Comedian in The Watchmen, and for looking a hell of a lot like Javier Bardem (Skyfall). Check out some Watchmen quotes here.

Oz: The Great and Powerful director Sam Raimi produces, with Ole Bornedal directing. The Possession premieres August 31.

Earlier today we posted three new The Bourne Legacy clips, and now we've got a behind-the-scenes featurette for you! Hear from Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, and writer/director Tony Gilroy in the new video.

Renner's Aaron Cross takes over the franchise for Matt Damon's Jason Bourne, with the events of the new film occurring in the same world at the same time as The Bourne Ultimatum. Weisz plays Dr. Stephanie Snyder, with Edward Norton, Joan Allen, and David Strathairn also starring.

Renner is best known for his roll in 2010's The Town, and The Avengers, where he played Hawkeye. Check out the Hawkeye Avengers Wallpaper here.

The Bourne Legacy comes out August 10.

Juno Temple and Riley Keough are in Love in Jack and Diane

Don't worry, Jack and Diane is not a sequel to Jack and Jill, starring Adam Sandler as two teenaged lesbians. Jack and Diane is a new film from Bradley Rust Gray, starring Juno Temple and Riley Keough. Check out the trailer below:

In what seems to be a bizarre cross between a romantic drama and a horror movie, Temple and Keough play Jack and Diane, two teenage girls in New York City who fall deeply in love, causing Diane to experience werewolf-like visions.

Temple is coming off an appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, and will also be starring this Friday alongside Matthew McConaughey in Killer Joe. McConaughey seems to be the unifying element, as Keough also just starred with the tight-abbed actor in Magic Mike.

Jack and Diane will hit theaters November 2. The film will be available for download on iTunes beginning September 28.

Vince Vaughn Poll: Which Film Gets The Watch?

Vince Vaughn is back alongside Ben Stiller in The Watch after the two made comic mastery in Dodgeball. Vaughn has turned in quite a few hilarious performances along the way (Old School, anyone?). But, he is also quite adept at drama (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Psycho).

Wedding Crashers Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn
He's led such an interesting career over his two decades in the entertainment business and shown many sides of his talent. As evidenced in The Watch trailer, it's easy to see that Vaughn is just getting started.

Total Recall Clip Shows off Some Futuristic Technology

Guys. Always test your cloaking technology. How many times do I have to say it? Stuff malfunctions. Be prepared.

Quaid's cloaking device fails him in this new clip from Total Recall:

Colin Farrell stars as Quaid, with Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, John Cho, and Bryan Cranston also appearing. The film is a remake of the 1990 version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which in turn is based on the Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember it For You Wholesale.

Len Wiseman directs. Catch the film in theaters August 3. Until then, have a look at the Total Recall trailer.

The Watch Outtakes: Oh My God, We're Going

Outtakes can be really, really hilarious, but I have to be honest, I don't like watching them during the credits. I've spent the last 2 hours suspending my disbelief, and as soon as the movie ends, you show me the man behind the curtain. It ruins the experience for me.

That's why this outtakes reel from The Watch is so great. It gives us a little taste of the comedy, a little peek behind the scenes, and it does it before the film even comes out. Check out the outtakes reel, with a forward by director Akiva Schaffer:

The Watch stars Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, and Vince Vaughn as a group of suburban guys who start a neighborhood watch program, only to discover an alien plot to take over the world.

With four amazing comedic actors at the wheel, and a man whose been involved in some of the best work SNL has produced in the last decade behind the camera, The Watch is sure to be a win.

See for yourself in theaters July 27, and check out The Watch red band trailer for another look.

Toronto Film Festival: 10 Films To Watch

The Toronto Film Festival announced its lineup yesterday, and it is impressive. You want to get an early glimpse at who and what will be celebrated at the 2013 Oscars, look no further than the Great White North’s premier film festival in early September.

After attending the Toronto Film Festival last year, Movie Fanatic believes that the stakes have been raised in 2012 with films from Ben Affleck (Argo), Emma Watson (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and surprise... The Avengers director Joss Whedon (Much Ado About Nothing).

Here are the top 10 films that have our highest of anticipations at this year’s TIFF.

10. Silver Linings Playbook
Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are joined by Robert De Niro in filmmaker David O. Russell’s first work since The Fighter. It’s awesome to see a film based on a serio-comic novel by Matthew Quick hit the festival circuit before a global big screen release.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook
9. Looper
As best seen in the Looper international trailer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a younger version of Bruce Willis. That clip showcases a wildly original story from filmmaker Rian Johnson.

Gordon-Levitt is a Looper, someone whom the mob employs in the past to take out people who are causing them problems in a future where time travel is available but illegal, and only the mob has it. What happens when Gordon-Levitt shows up ready to kill the next person who comes through the portal and it's... the future him?

8. Hyde Park on the Hudson
Bill Murray as President Franklin Roosevelt? Count us in as director Roger Michell takes us behind the scenes of the true-life meeting between one of our best presidents and the King and Queen of England as World War II is heating up.

The weekend-in-the-country setting masks the stress of the underlying global threat from Germany. How the free world responds is decided on that fateful holiday retreat.

7. Imogene
No matter what Kristen Wiig did after her Bridesmaids success and leaving Saturday Night Live would intrigue us. Imogene continues Wiig’s turn to movies as she portrays a playwright who fakes her own suicide, then gets exactly the attention she does not want: The court forcing her to live with her gambling-addled mother (Annette Bening).

6. Much Ado About Nothing
How does director Joss Whedon follow up the phenomenal success of The Avengers? Why not do Shakespeare! This low budget film was only recently announced as even being made, so prepare to be surprised by a superhero and sci-fi master with his take on the Bard.

5. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The first truly big role since leaving Harry Potter behind for Emma Watson is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Based on the bestselling book by Stephen Chbosky, Watson is part of a youthful ensemble navigating life that is the modern university campus.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Star Emma Watson
4. The Impossible
Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star as parents on vacation in Thailand when one of the worst tsunamis in human history strikes. The Impossible is one of the first films to tackle the disaster.

3. Anna Karenina
Director Joe Wright and Keira Knightley reteam after their brilliant work on Pride and Prejudice by tackling another great literary work. Anna Karenina is a film custom made for the Toronto Film Festival audience and we, for one, cannot wait to witness Wright’s majesty.

2. Cloud Atlas
Of all the films set to premiere at TIFF, Cloud Atlas has our eyebrows raised the highest. The movie is from Tom Tykwer, Lana and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix) and follows several storylines that span time periods and locales.

Its cast is simply brilliant: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Hugo Weaving.

1. Argo
After impressive turns directing Gone, Baby, Gone and The Town, Ben Affleck is poised for a triumphant trifecta of directorial work with Argo.

Ben Affleck in Argo

The true story stars Affleck as a CIA agent in charge of rescuing hostages in Iran. The superstar’s 1970s beard alone deserves top billing.

Alex Pettyfer and Kristen Stewart? Together? On screen? At the same time? Can the world handle it?

Looks like they might have to, as Alex Pettyfer is in talks to join Kristen Stewart in the Nick Cassavetes film Cali.

Actor Alex Pettyfer

The thriller follows a young woman who fakes her own death as part of a mock snuff film with her boyfriend. She comes out of hiding, however, to save her sisters.

Stewart is set to make her final appearance in the Twilight saga that pushed her into super-stardom. With the Breaking Dawn Part 2 first 7 minutes shown at Comic-Con, fans are gearing up for the film's November 16 release.

Having starred last month in Magic Mike, Alex Pettyfer made a name for himself as a hunky heartthrob this year. He will also appear in the upcoming film The Butler.

Cali is set to shoot later this summer.

Nick Offerman Promotes His New Film in an Unconventional Way: Somebody Up There Likes Me

Parks and Recreation's Nick Offerman has a new film coming out, called Somebody Up There Likes Me. Offerman produced and co-stars the indie flick, and as he announces in this promo video with wife and co-star Megan Mullally, and actress Alison Brie (who doesn't seem to be in the film), it was bought by Tribeca Films.

The promo may be slightly NSFW, as it features almost constant drug use, and some shoddy bleeping:

Somebody Up There Likes Me was written and directed by Bob Byington, and premiered at this year's SXSW. The film focuses on two best friends and the woman they both adore. Jess Weixler, Stephanie Hunt, Kevin Corrigan, and Keith Poulson

Poulson will lend his voice to an upcoming animated feature, which can be previewed in this Epic trailer. Offerman appeared earlier this year alongside Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street (check out some 21 Jump Street quotes).

Somebody Up There Likes Me will come out in theaters and video on demand in March 2013.

Dredd Interview: Karl Urban Dishes Remake

$
0
0

Dredd 3D star Karl Urban is quick to point out the immense disparities between his sci-fi epic and the one that Sylvester Stallone brought to the world in 1995 called Judge Dredd.

Karl Urban Dredd
“When I read the script, it became obvious to me that what we were endeavoring to do was completely different. Tonally, you couldn’t get more different,” Urban told us recently at Comic-Con. “Going into this movie I watched the Stallone version to see what worked and what didn’t work. The way that I approached the character was not to have the character be a posturing, bellowing character that was kind of grounded in ego.”

Urban, just finished shooting Star Trek 2, found that Stallone’s incarnation of the graphic novel hero missed the mark.

“To me, that wasn’t the Dredd that I knew. To me, it was far more interesting to have a character with this inner rage and struggling to contain it, rather than letting it all explode,” Urban said.

“That’s the direction that I was going in. I decided that what I wanted to do was find the humanity within Dredd. He’s not a superhero. He’s a cloned man, but he’s just a man. He doesn’t have superhero powers. His heroism is defined by the fact that he’s walking into a building while everybody else is running out.”

One way his film is different is Urban never takes off that iconic helmet -- as seen in the Dredd 3D red band trailer -- even though Stallone did in his film.

“The challenge was: How do I convey all that without the eyes?” Urban wondered. “There’s a wariness too about the character which is really important.”

Urban used all the tools that were available to him from his vast amount of training and experience. “Your voice becomes extremely important. In my research I discovered a passage in one of the comic strips that described Dredd’s voice as a saw cutting through bone,” he recalled.

“Other tools were the physicality. What can I express with my movement? It’s also really important to identify where the humor lies. That’s one of the things I really loved in the comic is just the really dry, dark humor.”

The star believes that the story of Dredd -- who is law officer, judge, jury and executioner in an explosively violent future -- is more relevant than ever. But, that’s not what drives Urban.

“To be honest with you, I didn’t think about how this movie was going to be perceived or the relevance of it when making it. To me, my mission was to a) honor the creation that John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra first created back in 1975 as best I could and to b) service the script and be in the moment and make the best film we could.”

Olivia Thirlby and Karl Urban in Dredd
Our hero is matched, as any good film does, by a killer villain. Lena Headey’s Ma-Ma is a worthy adversary in Dredd 3D, and Urban was downright frightened by what the actress brought to the set.

“I think there is a scary, beautiful, violent, way off-beat, amazing performance that Lena has delivered in this film. She’s enigmatic. You’re drawn to her when she’s on the screen. The choices that she made were so interesting,” Urban said.

“I have to confess, there was one day we were shooting the scene where I’m confronting her and we’re at opposite ends of the room and I’ve got my helmet on looking at her and she’s looking at me. And she just starts laughing, manically laughing. And I just feel within me the rage growing. She is that (expletive) good. She knows how to push your buttons.”

The Wolf of Wall Street keeps on adding some of the more relevant names in movies...and Rob Reiner...to its cast. Now Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man and Iron Man 2, is set to join on, playing a securities lawyer.

The film, directed by Martin Scorsese, tells the true story of former stock trader Jordan Belfort, who spent 22 months in jail for manipulative stock market practices. The film will highlight the tumultuous lifestyle of a "boiler room" trader. Leonardo DiCaprio, who is set to appear in the highly-anticipated Django Unchained later this year, will star as Belfort.

Jonah Hill (whose The Watch outtakes reel was just released today), Jean Dujardin, and Kyle Chandler also star.

Shooting for The Wolf of Wallstreet is expected to begin this fall.

Ferrell made a big-screen name for himself with the hit comedy Anchorman. Check out some Anchorman quotes for some of the best moments in comedy this century.

In Ruby Sparks, Paul Dano plays a writer whose first novel was a blockbuster hit. Now, he has writer's block that he believes is caused by the gaping hole in his love life. What’s a guy to do? Why not write a book where the central character is the woman of his dreams? What then does one do if the subject of that literary effort, Ruby Sparks, comes to life?

Dano met with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview and tells us what it was like on the inside to experience Ruby Sparks from original idea to full-fledged film, courtesy of his real life girlfriend -- the film’s writer and his co-star, Zoe Kazan.

"I saw the script really early and I was already intrigued and curious," Dano said. "I said to Zoe, 'Are you writing this for us?' And she said, 'Yeah!' And the rest was history."

Ryan Guzman and Kathryn McCormick each had to overcome huge obstacles to flourish as they do in the Step Up Revolution cast. The film’s two leads are at the heart of the story and a budding romance. They both arrived on the Miami set with a question mark in two very important areas, they tell Movie Fanatic exclusively in our video interview.

"We were both in a position that we had never been put in before," McCormick said. "We were both intimidated by the things that we had never done before -- acting for me and dancing for him."

Guzman was an MMA fighter with a penchant for acting who had to learn to dance and McCormick was a So You Think You Can Dance veteran that needed to grasp the art form known as acting and emoting onscreen.

Together they triumph in a story about how a dance ensemble known as "The Mob" proves that when we come together to dance in a Step Up Revolution flash mob, meaningful change can arise.
