Total Recall Exclusive: Kate Beckinsale on Being Bad

$

Kate Beckinsale is used to being in fighting shape for films. What challenged her about her badass character in Total Recall was that she only had four days after Underworld: Awakening wrapped before heading to Toronto to film Total Recall.

The actress told us in our exclusive video interview that “normally you have a two to three month period where you’re doing things that psychologically prepare you. That was the big challenge in this movie... that I was flying by the seat of my pants."

Beckinsale plays Colin Farrell’s wife, who is really a government agent assigned to keep the mind-erased man in line. When he visits a Rekall center, all hell breaks loose and Beckinsale turns ghastly evil in her effort to bring in Farrell’s Douglas Quaid… or is he Hauser, a rebel leader?

About a month after the Taken 2 international trailer debuted, Yahoo! Movies has premiered the domestic theatrical trailer. Take a look:

The film stars Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills, whose family members just keep getting taken! Time to hire some private security, dude.

This time, Mills is on vacation with his family in Istanbul when the father of the kidnapper Mills killed in the first film seeks revenge. Maggie Grace (Breaking Dawn Part 2), Famke Janssen, and Rade Serbedzija also star.

Neeson is fresh off a brief appearance in The Dark Knight Rises as Ra's al Ghul. He can be seen in Taken 2 beginning October 5.

A new international trailer for Total Recall has dropped. Have a look:

Total Recall stars Colin Farrell as Doug Quaid, a factory worker who goes to a memory-altering service seeking a change in his life. There, he discovers that his memory had been previously erased, and that he is in fact a secret agent.

Quaid was originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger (Expendables 2) in the 1990 film version, which was in turn based on the Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember it for You Wholesale.

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, John Cho, and Brian Cranston also star. Check out our exclusive interview with Kate Beckinsale for her take on playing a villain.

Total Recall opens August 3.

Heath Ledger's Joker May Have Been Inspired by Tom Waits

The Dark Knight Rises won the weekend for the second time in a row, and even with the film's success, comparisons to the much-adored second film The Dark Knight, are unavoidable.

Which film was better? Did the ending to The Dark Knight Rises ruin the series? Who's better: Bane or the Joker? Everybody in Gotham realizes Batman is Bruce Wayne, right?

My answers would be: The Dark Knight, yes, the Joker, and of course they do (they're just playing along so they don't hurt his feelings). While the sheer power of Tom Hardy as Bane was certainly doomy and awesome, his coolness (VERY MINOR SPOILER ALERT) was sort of compromised by the end.

Who's coolness was never compromised? Why, the epically amazing Joker, of course! Most people agree that Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight was incredible. But where did the inspiration come from? Compare the video below of Joker's interrogation in TDK, with a video of a 1979 interview with singer and professional weirdo Tom Waits, and tell me there isn't a striking similarity.

Pincus Exclusive: David Nordstrom & David Fenster Dish Fatherly Film

Filmmaker David Fenster wanted to capture what he was going through with his real-life father in Pincus. The helmer wrote the story about a son and how his life is altered by taking care of his father who is slowly fading away to Parkinson’s disease.

David Nordstrom in Pincus
If the story seen onscreen feels almost too real, that is because Fenster cast his real-life father to portray the Parkinson’s stricken character and actor David Nordstrom to play the title character.

The duo visited with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview taking us inside the deeply powerful and personal film.

Movie Fanatic: What was it like working with the director’s real-life father?

David Nordstrom: It was great. Dave and I have been longtime friends and I’d met his father a couple times, but he was in much better health and I hadn’t really seen him since he became more or less housebound. So there was some familiarity with him going in and a lot with Dave. What David was good at was just making me feel absolutely comfortable about doing whatever I wanted to do or had to be done for the movie and just throwing us together and having the faith in both me and Paul (Fenster) that we’d work it out, just because we’re individuals but we’re also nice guys. We’re not going to step on each other’s toes too much, which we didn’t.

David Fenster: There was that good built-in antagonism -- a warm, friendly antagonism.

David Nordstrom: That is weird because all of the sudden I more or less moved into his house and started taking care of him, with a little bit of effort made towards being friendly. What the script did call for was kind of this antagonism from the beginning, so you kind of had to start bossing him around. We ended up just communicating with jibes and jokes to each other. It was fun, but it was difficult. A lot of that stuff was to lighten the mood because it could get pretty heavy. At the very least it’s a great way of keeping you grounded in the character and the performance.

Movie Fanatic: How was it writing such a personal story with Pincus? Was it therapeutic at all?

David Fenster: I’m pretty sure it was positive and hopefully it wasn’t too self-indulgent. It seems like a lot of positivity has come out of it and that’s magic in its own. I haven’t been home in a month or so and I was there for a really long stretch, so it’s hard to remember because there’s so much positivity around us that it’s really dark, difficult and unpleasant most of the time. Before we all were working on this thing, there was nothing to look toward. It was so easy to just focus on the negative, especially for my dad, mom and me. I think it’s been a good thing but I don’t know. Maybe I’ll understand my motivations for doing it a little better in the future, what sort of affect it had on me.

Movie Fanatic: Florida, your original home, is a big part of this movie, specifically the Everglades was almost another character. How important was it to shoot in Florida?

David Fenster Picture
David Fenster: It was incredibly important… I did feel like there’s this air of mystery. There’s all this decadence and cheesiness and shallowness that goes on in Miami, but then there’s -- and it’s mostly in the Everglades and the Keys -- this weird mystery and strangeness to it. Whether that’s the tropical flora and fauna or whatever, there is that palpable thing. I was interested in showing that. It was really a personal challenge to present this place that I didn’t always think very highly of and it was so familiar as to just be boring. So to get past that and simultaneously I know that place better than I probably know anywhere else and I tried to highlight some of these weird little secret [places], just to show a really personal vision of that place, because you don’t see it very often.

David Nordstrom: I remember you telling me when you moved back there before we started working on the movie that you had a totally different relationship to that area since you moved back -- A) because of your age, but B) because of the situation, just that it was a slowly dawning realization that you lived in this very unique ecological, cultural environment. That’s never explicitly stated in the movie but I think that was going on with Pincus’ character that he’s probably lived there more or less all his life and only recently is starting to take notice of how strange and beautiful and mysterious that area is, because he needed that in his life.

Rashida Jones has been quite the busy creative force in 2012. Between filming her hit show Parks and Recreation and co-writing and starring in Celeste and Jesse Forever, Jones is proving her mettle as a performer to be reckoned with. Jones tells us in our exclusive video interview that it was the chance to work on a full-length film with her good friend Andy Samberg that truly drove the creative process.

“It was great because Andy hasn’t gotten a chance to do this meaty of a role,” Jones said. Working with people she knows is always a plus, Jones reported in our Our Idiot Brother interview. “I got to watch him in real time be incredible and a total natural at something that he’s never been given the opportunity to do before.”

Jones has crafted a story about high school sweethearts who stayed together into adulthood, only to find they would be better off as friends. How will the two manage the intricacies of life where once there was love, and now there's only friendly appreciation?

Forever Marilyn Blu-Ray Review: 7 Films Scratch Monroe Itch

Marilyn Monroe continues to fascinate audiences decades after her death. The icon is getting the special Blu-Ray treatment with a seven-disc release entitled Forever Marilyn. Movie Fanatic received the set and could not recommend it enough and on several levels.

Forever Marilyn Blu-RayFirst of all, there are the films included: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, River of No Return, There’s No Business Like Show Business, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like it Hot and The Misfits. Imagine having all seven of those films in one box set? You can, as the Forever Marilyn set is out today from 20th Century Fox and MGM.

Packaged in a two-book series, this has got to be the most definitive collection of Marilyn Monroe gathered in one package. The seven films chosen are not only her best, but also do an outstanding service to her legend by showcasing the multi-talented performer. From Westerns, musicals, drama and comedy… she did it all.

And don’t get us started on the stellar Blu-Ray conversion. These classic films have never looked or sounded as good as they do since the films debuted.

The set marks the fiftieth anniversary of her untimely passing with panache and style worthy of the icon portrayed so effortlessly by Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn.

Here is a quick summary of the super seven Monroe films included in Forever Marilyn:

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Two singers, best friends Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw, travel to Paris pursued by a private detective hired by Lorelei's fiancé's disapproving father to keep an eye on her, a rich, enamored old man and many other doting admirers.

The Misfits
A sexy divorcée falls for an over-the-hill cowboy who is struggling to maintain his romantically independent lifestyle in early-sixties Nevada.

 Some Like It Hot
When two musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all-female band disguised as women, but further complications set in.

 How to Marry a Millionaire
Three women set out to find eligible millionaires to marry, but find true love in the process.

Seven Year Itch
The film that gave us what is largely considered Monroe’s most iconic picture (below). When his family goes away for the summer, a so far faithful husband is tempted by a beautiful neighbor.

Marilyn Monroe Picture
There’s No Business Like Show Business
Molly and Terry Donahue, plus their three children, are The Five Donahues. Son Tim meets hat-check girl Vicky and the family act begins to fall apart.

River of No Return
A frontier farmer takes off with his son and a saloon singer after the man who stole his rifle and his horse.

Total Recall Exclusive: Colin Farrell on Classic Story Resonance

Colin Farrell did not hesitate to step into the role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Len Wiseman reboot of Total Recall. The actor told us exclusively in our video interview that he believes the story written by Philip K. Dick (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale) will always resonate.

“I think it goes back to the fundamentals of being a human being -- the ideas of identity and personality and fitting into society. I play a protagonist who believes everything he thought was real was taken from him,” Farrell said.

The 2012 film, also starring Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale, is completely different from the 1990 smash hit, but the film's core message still remains.

“Fifteen minutes into the film he finds out that nothing is real in his life. So, it brings up those questions of nature versus nurture. I think it plays into people’s feelings of what it means to be a person.”

With $8.7 million in ticket sales on Tuesday, The Dark Knight Rises has surpassed $300 million in domestic earnings. Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film joins The Avengers ($615.9 million) and The Hunger Games ($405.9 million) as the three films of this year to pass the box office landmark.

Batman, Selina Kyle, Bane, and The Dark Knight Rises have been in theaters for 12 days, and still seeks to challenge The Avengers for 2012 box office supremacy. It remains to be seen, however, if The Dark Knight Rises can even match the domestic gross of its predecessor The Dark Knight, which earned $533.3 million in the U.S.

What do you think? Can TDKR surpass TDK or The Avengers in earnings? Let us know in the comments section below, and check out some The Dark Knight Rises quotes to relive the film.
