The annual Toronto Film Festival is upon us and Movie Fanatic has packed our bags for Canada to bring our readers all the action from one of the most esteemed film festivals of the year.

TIFF LogoJust to give you a preview of what we’ll be covering film-wise, here is a little snippet of what we have on the schedule, so far!

Moneyball: Brad Pitt stars in the true tale of how the Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane managed to create a team of misfits who set records and made baseball history by working within the framework of a team payroll that was the lowest in Major League Baseball.  We’re checking out the film and scored video interviews with its cast!

Machine Gun Preacher: Gerard Butler headlines this true story of a former drug addict who heads to Africa in an effort to save the youngest citizens of that continent from strife, war and famine. Movie Fanatic is set to see the film Friday and chat with the cast over the weekend.

Martha Marcy May Marlene: We’ve already had the pleasure of an advance screening for this stunner that should make its star, Elizabeth Olsen, a superstar. Movie Fanatic has exclusive interviews scheduled with the film’s cast including Sarah Paulson and Hugh Dancy.

Restless: The latest film from the visual maven, Gus Van Sant, stars Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper. Restless is the story of a terminally sick girl (Wasikowska) who falls in love with a boy with the most interesting of hobbies: He enjoys attending funerals. Restless is a classic film festival entry and with Van Sant directing, it should be as powerful as anything he’s ever shot.

The Ides of March: Ryan Gosling and George Clooney star in this political drama that already has some serious Oscar buzz going for it. The Ides of March is based on the play Farragut North by Beau Willimon and also stars Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti and Marisa Tomei. The film is the latest directorial effort from Clooney and don’t miss our exclusive interview with star Max Minghella.

Movie Fanatic is most excited to witness this story in Toronto and chat with the film’s stars including exclusive interviews with Jamie Campbell Bower and Rafe Spall. The all-star cast also includes Rhys Ifans and Vanessa Redgrave.

50/50: An astounding piece of filmmaking, 50/50 stars Joseph Gordon Levitt as a twenty-something man who discovers he has cancer. Immediately doctors give his chance of survival at the titular figure. As his co-star Seth Rogen says so eloquently in the trailer, “If you were a Vegas game, you’d have the best odds.” It’s that kind of optimism that is peppered throughout 50/50 and it is easily one of the best films of 2011. Look for our Movie Fanatic chat with Gordon Levitt, Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and the writer of the film -- whose story the film is based on -- Will Reiser.

This preview is merely the beginning of our Toronto Film Festival coverage. Don’t miss a moment with Movie Fanatic as we head to Toronto to bring you the very best film has to offer in 2011.

Bucky Larson Born to be a Star Movie Review: Swardson is Sweet

0
0

Nick Swardson is Bucky Larson in Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star, and to our surprise, he has helped to craft a film that is not crass as much as it is creatively sweet. Swardson is clearly one of our most talented comedians and that stellar ability is on full display in Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star.

Christina Ricci and Nick Swardson in Bucky Larson
Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star is definitely produced by Adam Sandler and his production company, Happy Madison. It has that feel and some of the actor’s favorite players including Swardson (Just Go With It) and Kevin Nealon. There are two other performers who prove they are game for the madness of Happy Madison movies, Don Johnson and Christina Ricci. Both shine in their roles as the two people, other than Bucky’s parents, who are integral to Larson’s growth as a character as well as the parties responsible for moving the plot along through Bucky’s eyes.

The film is not the most outstanding comedy we’ve seen all year, but audiences should be completely surprised by how insanely funny it is, and a large part of that credit has to go to Swardson -- the actor is truly coming into his own.

Matching how Sandler grew from SNL player to controller of his own movie destiny, Swardson is a co-writer and producer in addition to starring in Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star. It is, in fact, Swardson who proves with this film that it is he that is born to be a star.

Although the film follows a young man from Iowa who when he learns his parents were huge porn stars in the 1970s, heads to Hollywood to follow in their footsteps, it is not a porn parody film. I would argue that the porn industry in many ways is a minor player in what makes Bucky Larson work.

Once he arrives in Hollywood, he meets a sugary sweet Christina Ricci. She is more than a love interest. The actress provides a heart to the film that gives Larson his moral compass beyond what he inherently knew prior to his arrival in Los Angeles. She sees something in Bucky Larson that is exactly what audiences will see in Swardson’s character. He may look funky with his bowl haircut and seriously buck teeth, yet Larson is a dreamer, and who cannot identify with his passion for pursuing a destiny?

Bucky Larson is the surprise comedy hit for the fall. If you are a fan of Happy Madison movies, Swardson, Nealon or even Johnson, run, don’t walk to the cinemas for a little living the Larson life. It is equally sweet as it is innocently inane. And we mean that in the most adoring of ways.

But can Russell Crowe really sing? Movie goers are about to find out.

Weekend Movie Preview: September 9, 2011

Contagion hopes to spread the fear, Warrior compels while Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star aims to send audiences into a fit of funny as three new films debut this weekend.

Matt Damon Contagion Still

Contagion features an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law and is directed by Steven Soderbergh -- so count on several definites: Stellar acting and a brilliant director at his best.

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star has Nick Swardson coming into his own as the funnyman co-wrote and co-produced the latest comedy from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison productions.

Warrior stars Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte in a film that is being called a Rocky for our times.

Contagion: Soderbergh has weaved a web of thrills and complete terror as no horror movie could achieve because it is so real. What would happen if a woman (Paltrow) came back from a trip to Asia infected with a Contagion that would wind up killing millions of people? It could happen and that is what makes Contagion so compelling, besides the fact it is expertly made.

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star: Swardson takes the title as the most awkward porn star wanna-be that audiences actually pull for to succeed. Bucky Larson heads to Hollywood when he learns his parents were porn stars in the 1970s in hopes of continuing the family legacy while fulfilling his destiny.

Warrior: Edgerton and Hardy are MMA fighters and brothers whose careers and lives are on a collision course to the ultimate face-off in the ring where fate and family collide.

Warrior Movie Review: Families Who Fight

0
0

Warrior is accurately portraying itself as a family drama versus an intense sports film. The movie delves into the relationship of two brothers and their father and how that dynamic has influenced all their lives.

Joel Edgerton in Warrior

The heart and soul of the film are Tom Edgerton and Tom Hardy as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters who are on a career collision course under the watchful eye of their father, played by Nick Nolte.

Warrior's power truly emanates from its leads. Edgerton and Hardy put on an acting clinic. The duo are simply astounding in their commitment to not only their roles, but the realism that was required of them to physically portray their characters beyond the personal intensity of capturing a character. Ask any fan of MMA and they would tell you witnessing Hardy as Brendan Conlon and Edgerton as Tommy Conlon, it is impossible not to believe they couldn't jump into a real ring.

Then, there's Nolte as their father, Paddy. His gruff persona bleeds through his performance. No, he is not playing himself by any means. But it speaks to the actor's talent that he is able to channel aspects of himself that mirror his character while still bringing the fatherly nature of his role to life without reservations.

Early buzz on the film had some calling it this generation's Rocky. Warrior works as a film all on its own merit. We can see Rocky comparisons, but Warrior is a completely different beast. There is the triumph of spirit element that it shares with the Sylvester Stallone classic -- and it is about fighters in a ring. But, in our mind, that is where the comparison ends.

Warrior possesses a completely different dynamic and that takes us to the point of how the film is more about family than it is about MMA fighting. The key to Warrior's success lies in its ability to mine the vibrancy of family and how those relationships are more complex and at times more volatile than any nail-biting fighting scene.

As The Fighter successfully also made its film about the dysfunctional family at the heart of its story, so too does Warrior. Sure, the fight scenes are powerful, compelling and terse. But the moments between brothers Edgerton and Hardy coupled with their different relationship with their father, as embodied by Nolte, are almost more intense and volatile.

In the end, Warrior -- in our opinion -- is not a sports movie as much as it follows in the legacy of films such as Legends of the Fall in its ability to take the audience inside the world of brothers and their relationship with their father.

Helen Mirren’s The Debt continued to impress, taking fourth place with $4.9 million. The Focus Features film is proving its mettle hanging with the big boys of the box office in its second week of release.

Closing out the top 5 is the Zoe Saldana vehicle Colombiana. Saldana portrays a hit woman out for revenge on the people responsible for her parents’ death when she was nine years old. Colombiana sold $4 million in tickets over the first weekend of the fall movie season.

Contagion Screenwriter Speaks on Box Office Victory

0
0

Scott Z. Burns first got the idea for this week’s box office champ Contagion while working on director Steven Soderbergh’s previous collaboration with star Matt Damon, The Informant.

Jude Law in Contagion

“There's a scene in The Informant where Scott Bakula is on the phone and coughs and sneezes and gives the phone to Matt's character. And then Matt's character goes on kind of a rant about, 'now what happens, I get sick, my kid gets sick.' I'd always sort of been fascinated by that ever since I went on the airplane,” Burns said. “So I called Steven and I said I think it would be really interesting to do a pandemic movie, but one that was more rooted in reality and he said, 'I'm in!' The pitch wasn't any longer than that.”

Burns is sitting down with Movie Fanatic to talk about the mind that created the madness that is the international epidemic movie striking a chord with critics and audiences alike.

Burns first garnered notice for his work writing The Bourne Ultimatum, again working with Damon. Contagion marks the second time Burns has worked with Soderbergh and he would clearly adore the opportunity to create movie magic with either or both of them once again.

Burns waxes poetic about making Contagion as well as taking us inside the process of writing a film that he hopes will create a fever that all audiences will want to catch.

Movie Fanatic: When you have an ensemble cast where any one of them could have had their own film how do you decide how many characters is too many? How many is too little?

Scott Z. Burns: Well, when we started thinking about this, Steven and I talked about having one character sort of tracing the virus back in time and that was Marion’s (Cotillard) character. She was going to be doing the detective work. But then we also needed a character who’d be sort of marching through time going forward with the virus and that became Laurence’s (Fishburne) character. And then we wanted kind of a proxy for a human being and how they would experience a virus… So we knew we were going backwards and we knew we were going forwards and we needed a proxy. Then when I started doing research I just was fascinated by -- because H1N1 had happened -- how there’s this other voice that starts approaching on the consciousness about these things and that’s where Jude’s (Law) character came in. Jennifer’s (Ehle) character was born out of the fact that I met Dr. (Ian) Lipkin and I saw how interesting the research was. I guess at that point I thought, “That’s a lot of people. Probably can’t afford anymore.”

Movie Fanatic: How difficult is it to insert the medical terminology into a script and have it be real, yet still approachable and understandable for an audience?

Scott Z. Burns: At one point we were shooting a scene and Ian said, “Well she should say that it’s morphologically pathognomonic.” I was like, “I can’t ask another human being to say that.” But I was amazed that not only could she say it, but she could say it as though she truly understood it, which as a writer, and I’m sure everyone else up here feels the same way, when you have someone that can do that it means that your script can live basically.

Movie Fanatic: Why is the timing perfect in September 2011 for Contagion?

Scott Z. Burns: When we started doing research all of the scientists that we spoke to about it I anticipated that some of them were trying to tame down how things were going, "Well yea this is possible." But all of them said it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. If you look at the sort of medical record, every few years there ends up being some kind of outbreak. We had started the movie at about three or four months into the research [which] is when H1N1 happened. So that became a really interesting trade circle through the system for us to follow some of the issues.

Laurence Fishburne stars in Contagion

Movie Fanatic: Why have the film start in Hong Kong?

Scott Z. Burns: One of the things that I learned while doing research -- because we wanted to ground this as much in reality as possible -- was part of this virus is based on SARS, which started I think in Guangzhou as far as we know. The reason that we chose Hong Kong, the mainland, is because there are some tensions in terms of change over the government and there are two governments there. And even though they seem to be working it out, during times of stress in governments and organizations, there's always gonna be difficulties with sharing information. The Chinese were very helpful to the World Health Organization during SARS and there was a lot of cooperation, but in places in the world where there's not a lot of refrigeration, people tend to go to wet markets and buy animals and at certain times of the year, it's culturally appropriate to eat furry mammals and that's one of the things that surrounds SARS. So it was to sort of highlight how different cultures interact with the natural world.

Latest Breaking Dawn Part 1 Trailer: Troubles Ahead

0
0

A new 15-second trailer for Breaking Dawn Part 1 has arrived. The preview shows a few new shots for fans, but one thing is clear: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is no honeymoon -- danger lies ahead.

Spending Time Together

Days after Summit Entertainment released two new Breaking Dawn Part 1 posters, they have given fans a short glimpse into the November film. The tension is ripe for our heroes Jacob (Taylor Lautner), Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) as the end to the sweeping epic series is clearly within reach.

Right off the bat, Stewart’s Bella begins to feel something is growing inside her. Sure, that seems like a funny way to describe her learning she’s pregnant. But, if you know the series, this is no ordinary pregnancy. Before long, that vampire hybrid baby will be making its debut into the world (with a little help from Edward's teeth!).

The spot does a great job at showing how the fear in Bella’s eyes is not the normal reaction to discovering a newlywed is pregnant. Why shouldn’t she be scared? Now that she is pregnant, her life will truly never be the same again.

Inside TIFF: George Clooney Talks The Ides of March

0
0

George Clooney was front and center (well, in a literal sense Ryan Gosling sat in the center) at The Ides of March press conference at the Toronto Film Festival this week, while Movie Fanatic was also there and is now here to bring you a few tastes of one of the biggest films to debut at the fest.

George Clooney TIFF Press Con

The Ides of March is a political thriller, directed by a man in Clooney who has made his political views more than known. No, Clooney will never run for office, but he reveled in the opportunity of playing a Democratic governor during the heated party primaries. Yet, Clooney was quick to say that his film wasn’t pushing any agenda.

"People think that films somehow are trying to lead society,” Clooney said with his trademark smile. “Films don't lead the way. Mostly we're reflecting the moods and thoughts that are going on in our country and around the world.”

Clooney went on to say that Ides of March, his second feature where he serves as director after his astounding work on Good Night and Good Luck, was merely putting a mirror to society in America as a whole.

"If this film reflects some of the cynicism that we've seen in recent times, that's probably good,” Clooney said. “It's not a bad thing to hold a mirror up and look at some of the things we're doing. It's not a bad thing to look at how we elect our officials."

Deflecting a question about whether it was more difficult to direct in the spotlight than date, Clooney shifted the focus to the work of his co-star Gosling and his impeccable work on The Ides of March.

“I think he knocks it out of the park,” Clooney said. “He’s the center of the hurricane and that requires intelligence in an actor.”

Stay with Movie Fanatic as we bring you all the coverage from The Ides of March and interviews with its stars including Gosling, Evan Rachel Wood, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Jeffrey Wright.

The Book of Mormon Movie: In the Works!

It's racked up numerous Tony Awards and it will kick off a national tour in Denver next summer.

Beyond that, Trey Parker and Matt Stone confirm they plan on taking The Book of Mormon to the big screen.

The Book of Mormon Pic

“Hopefully it will have a big run and a big tour and then we can do the movie in several years," Parker, who write the musical with Stone and Avenue Q's Robert Lopez, tells EW.  “The great thing is, a lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey’s a director and Scott [Rudin] is a great producer. We’ve all made movies. So it’s kind of cool, it can stay in the same family.”

Parker and Stone have teamed up in the past with Rudin on 1993′s Cannibal! The Musical, 1999′s South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut and 2004′s Team America: World Police.

Top Gun to Be Re-Released in 3D

Paramount Pictures is banking on the fact that movie goers still feel the need. The need for speed.

It hopes to release a 3D version of Top Gun in early 2012.

Top Gun Trailer

According to Rob Hummel - the CEO of Legend3D, which would convert this 1986 classic into three dimensions - Paramount is awaiting approval from Tony Scott. But the studio hopes to get it and have the Tom Cruise action flick in theaters by next spring.

"I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight," Hummel told The Hollywood Reporter. "You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen.

Talk has died down, but this rumor would lend credence to the possibility that a Top Gun sequel really might get made someday. Would you wanna fly with Maverick again?

Men in Black 3 Arriving May 25 in IMAX 3D

0
0

Men in Black 3 is shrouded in secrecy, but the first bit of news that can actually be reported is Sony has announced a release date: May 25. The film will arrive on screens in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Will Smith and Josh Brolin on MIB3 set

The first Men in Black film landed in 1997 with its sequel being released in 2002 -- both starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

We’ve seen on set photos of Smith looking his dapper best in the black suit (remember his line, “but I make this look good?”) along with new acting cohort Josh Brolin, but little else is known about the storyline or the timing of the film. Movie Fanatic has gathered that Men in Black 3 involves some sort of time travel with Smith going back in time to reunite with the Jones character, played in the past by Brolin.

Barry Sonnenfeld is back directing a screenplay by Etan Cohen which promises to stay true to the comic book series by Lowell Cunningham. Will Jones be in the film? It looks like it as photos of him and Smith have made the rounds as well. Also joining the gang with Brolin is Oscar winner Emma Thompson.

Exclusive: Michael Shannon Dishes Man of Steel

While visiting with Michael Shannon for our exclusive interview on Machine Gun Preacher (stay with Movie Fanatic for that compelling chat) during the Toronto Film Festival, the Oscar nominee gave us an exclusive on his feelings as shooting begins on Man of Steel -- the Superman reboot starring Henry Cavill.

Michael Shanon picture

Man of Steel will be Shannon’s first foray into a big budget blockbuster. It was clear that the actor was eager to bring the world of Superman a whole new look.

“We’re going back to square one. I guess you could call it a reboot,” Shannon said. “I’m excited to be doing that with Zack Snyder who did such a wonderful job with the Watchman and 300.”

He’s playing General Zod and Movie Fanatic asked if he found it fun to play the villain. “I do, although I feel a lot of responsibility,” Shannon said.

The scope of the film impressed the actor and he seemed quite serious to make sure he does his absolute best, knowing the Superman fan base is watching closely as he takes up the villainy from esteemed thespian Terence Stamp who played Zod in the 1980 film.

“It’s a big movie. I’ve just started working on it, so I’m not quite into the swing of it yet. I’m trying to wrap my head around it. There are a lot of different elements that I’ve never experienced -- like the CGI. You always hear about actors when they run into that for the first time, [they] are a little thrown by it. I’m looking forward to getting a little more comfortable and getting into a rhythm and then I think I’ll start having some real fun with it."

Stay with Movie Fanatic as the release date of September 23 for Machine Gun Preacher comes closer when we bring you our entire exclusive interview with Shannon.
