As you may have heard at the time, about a year ago a Utah-based company called Bangerter Homes built a replica of the house from the Disney Pixar animation Up. Now, the house has some owners and they've posted a pretty cool video tour to show off the likeness. Take a look:

The house plays a pivotal role in Up, as its inhabitant, the 78-year-old Carl ties thousands of balloons to it in order to float away to South America. Take a look at our Up quotes page to relive some of the best moments from the film.

Pixar is famous for making beautifully animated family films with a lot of heart, and the fact that a house was built in homage to one is a testament to that. Their latest movie, Brave, premiered earlier this year, with sequels to Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo in the works.

The house is open to occasional tours, and has its own Facebook page that fans can check out for more info.

On Monday we began our Tournament of Movie Fanatic Comedy Bracket with two exciting matchups: Annie Hall vs. The Jerk and The Big Lebowski vs. High Fidelity. Today, we're switching to a new matchup every weekday! But first, let's announce Monday's winners:

With 66.3% of the vote, The Big Lebowski topped High Fidelity to move on to round two. With 55.9% of the vote, Annie Hall bested The Jerk and will continue on for a chance to be crowned the Comedy Champion. Vote for today's matchup: Rushmore vs. Blazing Saddles! Then, scroll down to take a look at the updated bracket!

Rushmore PhotoBlazing Saddles Poster

Rushmore: What could be funnier than watching a pubescent Jason Schwartzman with abundant unearned confidence fail miserably at every social undertaking? Almost nothing. Wes Anderson's career began with quirky, intelligent comedies, and it has slowly trickled into the realm of sentimental dramedy. Rushmore was without a doubt the pinnacle of his comedy. A delightful, immensely quotable romp with a bratty teenaged antihero as its protagonist, Rushmore not only launched Schwartzman's career, it redefined Bill Murray's, and introduced the world to Anderson's unique and oft-imitated directorial style. Visit our Rushmore quotes page for more.

vs.

Blazing Saddles: Mel Brooks has many comedies that deserve to be considered the best of all time, but few are as whip smart as Blazing Saddles. The film debuted in 1974 to a nation still struggling with equality and leave it to Brooks to tackle racism head on with his story of a black sheriff in the old west who is as formidable a foe as any lawless gunslinger had ever met. Usual Brooks stars Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn are also featured. Brooks even plays two roles, Governor William J. Lepetomane and the Indian Chief, of all things! The film deserves to be considered the funniest of all time because of its ability to mesh social consciousness with all out slapstick comedy that is as sharp as a knife. Starbuck Gets a New Name: Vince Vaughn Comedy Now Called The Delivery Man

Writer/Director Ken Scott's American remake of his own Canadian comedy Starbuck is getting a new title, according to ComingSoon. The film will now be called The Delivery Man, which is probably a good move, as Starbuck conjures up almost exclusively coffee, and not sperm-based rompy comedy.

Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers) takes on the starring role as a man who discovers that he has fathered hundreds of children as a sperm donor (under the alias "Starbuck," hence the original title). Not only that, but a group of his children are petitioning the sperm bank to learn their father's identity.

Chris Pratt (The Five-Year Engagement), Cobie Smulders (The Avengers), and Britt Robertson also star. The Delivery Man has no release date as of yet.

Here Comes the Boom: Henry Winkler on His Inner Funk

With the Kevin James-starring Here Comes the Boom, Henry Winkler has now made five movies with the Adam Sandler production company Happy Madison. “Both Adam and Kevin are based in the heart,” Winkler said of his work that includes The Waterboy. “Everything that they do has tremendous emotionality.”

Winkler visited with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview where he talks about the magic of the comic company and how when James calls, you join his film about a high school teacher who takes to the MMA circuit to raise money for Winkler’s school orchestra.

If he’s a little excited about his arena entry dance with James’ character, you can forgive him for being proud of unleashing his inner Boogie Man. “Funkmeister, is it? Whatever came to my mind, came to my body,” he said and laughed.

How one teacher can change a life is an often used theme of Here Comes the Boom and we get Winkler to reflect on the educator that forever altered his professional trajectory. And we could not let “The Fonz” go without asking what it meant to him to have that legendary character’s leather jacket in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Kurt Russell wasn’t the only one terrified in the icy tundra of Antarctica when The Thing premiered in 1982. Audiences showed up in droves for the John Carpenter classic and in a unique thing to come out of the success of the film -- it became the rare quotable horror flick.

Kurt Russell The Thing
Russell’s R.J. MacReady certainly had his hands full with the shape-shifting creature that threatens to kill everyone in the remote facility. Check out some of our favorite The Thing (1982) quotes.

Childs: What do we do now?
MacReady: Why don't we just wait here for a little while... see what happens... | permalink

Clark: I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off, whatever it is. | permalink

MacReady: I know I'm human. And if you were all these things, then you'd just attack me right now, so some of you are still human. This thing doesn't want to show itself, it wants to hide inside an imitation. It'll fight if it has to, but it's vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it's won. | permalink

MacReady: We've gotta burn the rest of him. | permalink

MacReady: I dunno, it's like this: thousands of years ago this spaceship crashes, and this thing, whatever it is... gets thrown out or crawls out and it ends up freezing in the ice.
Garry: So, the Norwegians find it, and they dig it out of the ice...
MacReady: That's right, Garry. They dig it up. They cart it back to their base. It gets thawed out, it wakes up, probaly not the best of moods, and... I don't know, I wasn't there!
Childs: How could this motherfucker wake up after thousands of years frozen in the ice?
George Bennings: And how can it make itself look like a dog?
MacReady: I don't know. Because it's different then us. Because it's from outer space. What more do you want from me? Ask Blair! | permalink

The Thing PosterThe Sixth Sense Movie Poster

The Thing: Although the John Carpenter-directed The Thing was a remake itself (of The Thing from Another World), his work proved that the 2011 remake of one of the best remakes ever was probably not such a good idea. When The Thing landed in 1982, it scared the living daylights out of horror fans and movie fans who took the scary plunge into Carpenter’s Antarctic world. A shape-shifting creature has taken over a remote science facility and winds up changing Kurt Russell and everyone else’s idea of what an Arctic adventure should be. Check out our The Thing quotes page for more.

vs.

The Sixth Sense: 1999 was a year that changed the language of film forever. The movie that did it? The Sixth Sense. Audiences were shocked and thrilled by M. Night Shyamalan's twist ending that has come to be a hallmark of thriller and horror movies ever since. Moviegoers entered the theater expecting to see a straight-forward horror film about a child who sees ghosts. What they got instead was one of the greatest endings in movie history. That, plus a fair share of scares, and ominous performances by Bruce Willis (Looper), and a young Haley Joel Osment, means that The Sixth Sense absolutely deserves to be in the conversation for best horror movie ever. Prometheus Blu-Ray Review: Many Questions Answered

$

When Prometheus hit theaters this past summer, it rocked many people’s world. Yet, for others… the Ridley Scott movie was littered with holes and did nothing but raise questions.

Prometheus Alien

Fortunately for all those involved, Blu-Ray has the power to take the viewer deeper into a film’s mystery and provide a sound experience that cannot be delivered in a theater. That is certainly the case, albeit a surprising one given the scope of the film, with Prometheus.

The Prometheus Blu-Ray landed on Tuesday and it has so many extras, it has taken this reviewer two days to go through them all! Movie Fanatic appreciated the theatrical version for what it was (check out our Prometheus review), but with the power of hindsight, that adoration for the film has faded with time.

But, we are happy to report that after viewing the film on Blu-Ray, utilizing its second screen technology and pilfering the package’s extras… our opinion on the film that may or may not be a prequel to Alien has seriously improved.

Mystery has surrounded this project since it was first announced and Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts’ script did nothing but add to that fire. Upon viewing the film, audiences may not have responded the way that the screenwriting duo had hoped. With the Blu-Ray release and its containing the second screen app for tablets or smart phones, the brilliance of their world is seriously enhanced.

Sure, you might be saying, “Shouldn’t all that be figured out for the theatrical version?” Yes, but… the glory of the Blu-Ray format is that it allows audiences to see another side of a movie. Even Oscar-winning pictures benefit from a second look with the added benefit of the disc’s extras.

On the home video release, we were treated to the original theatrical release, but also something called the “ultimate Prometheus experience” (highlighted in the above video) with an alternative opening and ending… both will intrigue.

Although due to its theatrical length, the deleted scenes available on the Blu-Ray could not make the film's cut, witnessing them on the home video seriously enhances the universe that Scott clearly created with his breakthrough Alien. One no doubt sees the connection to that 1979 powerhouse now.

Also, a little hint: There is a feeling of a connection to Scott’s other sci-fi epic, Blade Runner, in some of the extras as well! That we gleaned from the commentary by Scott along with tidbits pieced together from the Lindelof and Spaihts commentary as well.

Prometheus Blu-Ray Box

And before you’re ready to put the Prometheus Blu-Ray back on the shelf, make sure you check out the Peter Weyland Files… there are more clues to the story’s mystery than almost anywhere else on the disc!

Scream PosterFriday the 13th poster

Scream: Wes Craven's seminal 90s horror film may have single-handedly rejuvenate the genre. Scream took a self-reflexive approach to horror, scrapping the camp of the 70s and 80s in favor of a crisp and polished deconstruction of the classic scary movie. The iconic "Ghostface" mask that is still popular Halloween favorite, the unforgettable opening scene, and the three sequels all point to Scream being one of the best horror films of all time. Check out our Scream quotes page for more.

vs.

Friday the 13th: Few horror villains -- heck, movie villains period -- have had the cultural impact that Jason had in Friday the 13th. Can you even see a hockey mask and not think of the man with the axe that terrorizes teens who are simply trying to enjoy some time in the woods? The flick landed in 1980 and continued the slasher movie craze that honestly still exists to this day. Even the name of the camp, Camp Crystal Lake, has become legendary. Seven Psychopaths: Martin McDonagh Shares Love of Cinema Criminals

$
0
0

As clearly seen in the Seven Psychopaths red band trailer, writer-director Martin McDonagh has a thing for killers. “I guess I share Colin Farrell’s character’s feelings towards psychopaths and killers in the film,” he said to Movie Fanatic recently.

Martin McDonagh Directs Seven Psychopaths
“I know how cinematic they are and how interesting films can be with them, but kind of question the morality of only having films about guys with guns. It’s that, playing those two ideas off each other is my interest in them.”

Farrell is a screenwriter who is obsessed with writing a movie about the most violent of people (his screenplay shares the title of the actual movie). His best friend, played by Sam Rockwell, is joined by Christopher Walken in the dog-napping business and everybody becomes involved when it’s learned that the dog at the center of their latest canine escapade belongs to a psychopath of a gangster, played by Woody Harrelson.

Yet, although the film is about violent people, it is incredibly funny… something truly important to McDonagh to work throughout his story, as seen in his previous work In Bruges.

“I think most of my work is that way. In Bruges was probably more sad and melancholic than this, but it’s still hopefully very funny throughout. This was always a black comedy on the page, but I think it’s come out as more outrageously funny because of the actors,” he said.

“It’s the way I kind of think about the world and the way I like to tell stories. I don’t think you should get too heavy, but there’s enough out there in the world, with violence etcetera, that you should question. So I think that comedy leavens the heaviness of talking about those topics.”

The filmmaker has such adoration for the actors he cast in the film, but there was only one that he wrote with someone specifically in mind. “I write with Sam’s voice in my head because I love him as an actor, and I love the way he can go from comedy to darkness on a dime,” McDonagh said. If you had told him while he was penning Seven Psychopaths that he would be working with legends… McDonagh would have scoffed.

“I never dreamed I’d be in a place where I’m doing a film with Christopher Walken or Tom Waits or Harry Dean Stanton, even.”

As we stated in our Top 10 Christopher Walken Movies, the actor gives his best performance in McDonagh’s film and the director marveled at how Walken took the dialogue he wrote and sent it to a whole new stratosphere of resonance.

Poster for Seven Psychopaths
“It’s the periods and the commas that he forgets about,” he said and laughed. “But, conversely, he memorizes the script word for word like six months beforehand. And the words never change, the intonations change, and you can never imagine that a line or a word even could be pounced on in that way, but it’s still the words you wrote. So there’s a joy and a surprise to all that kind of stuff. He’s really the only one in the world that can do that I think.”

Above all else, the helmer believes he and his cast enjoyed the making of Seven Psychopaths to no end -- an aspect of the work he hopes will get his ensemble back in front of his camera in the future.

“I think after Bruges I was really happy with how it went, but I did think it was kind of hard work. After this, it felt more fun. We had an awful lot of fun on Bruges too. But I feel like I love working with these actors,” McDonagh said. “I couldn’t have dreamed working with these kinds of actors. And now I know them and they like how it’s turned out, so I know that they’d be happy to come back and do more stuff with me.”

Argo Review: Best Picture Frontrunner

$
0
0

To borrow the tagline of Argo, the movie may have been fake -- but the mission was real. The Ben Affleck-directed film, based on the effort to rescue six Americans stranded in Iran after radicals took over the U.S. Embassy in 1979, is as real as a fantastic film can get.

Bryan Cranston Ben Affleck Argo
Affleck stars as Tony Mendez, the CIA operative charged with bringing those half dozen U.S. citizens home. After a series of ideas is floated and none fails to stick, Mendez’s team is set on making the “Hollywood” option work. The journey to and through that meeting of Tinseltown and history is captured impeccably in Argo.

In 1979, sci-fi movies are huge. Star Wars had become one of the most popular films of all time, and looking for locales to film where the more exotic is better to reflect the dozens of movies that sought to capitalize on George Lucas’ success seemed real enough.

Mendez works with two Hollywood archetypes in John Goodman and Alan Arkin who make the “scouting trip” to Iran by the fictional filmmaking team of Argo as real as a heart attack -- with the next great sci-fi thriller, supposedly -- and Mendez has his cover for getting our citizens out of harm’s way.

The promise Affleck showed as a director in Gone Baby Gone and and with the pure awesomeness that was The Town has come to full fruition in Argo. The helmer effortlessly moves between ever-building suspense and laugh-out-loud humor (particularly in the Hollywood scenes). He never exploits the situation either, and instead lets the scene and the actors speak the truth.

What amazes the most is how impossible it is to describe the nail-biting, grab-the-armrest tension that permeates Argo. How Affleck manages to do that is astounding. There aren’t the usual suspects that accompany tension in a film. He does it subtly and through the fact that he gives his audience enough credit to know how high the stakes are for his characters. Knowing that fact, the viewer cannot exhale until the hostage crisis is resolved.

Argo is also impeccable in capturing the time. The film begins with a montage of narrated images taking us through the history of Iran-United States relations. It is in that context that when the first “official” scene of the film commences (when the students take over the Embassy), one can not only understand their frustration, but where in the geo-political timeline our story sits.

Not only does Affleck the director produce a work that is worthy of Oscar attention, but he does as the lead actor as well. And the entire cast matches that effort from top to bottom. Arkin and Goodman bring their Hollywood heavies to life in a way that provides the means for the mission, but also the humor and levity needed of a film that is so dense with tension. Meanwhile, back at the CIA, Bryan Cranston excels as Mendez’s boss who goes to bat for him on one or more occasions because of his belief that this crazy plan will work.

Cast of Argo
Our Argo review would be completely remiss not to mention the taut script by Chris Terrio. It hits all the right beats and never lets the foot off the gas, both in dramatic dialogue, action, tension and humor.

The Academy must be put on notice: You have your first Best Picture contender of the fall.
