The Sessions Review: Heartfelt and Humorous

$

0

The opening scenes of The Sessions set the stage for the gloriously humanity affirming story that is the tale of Mark O’Brien’s life. Stricken with Polio, he rides through a Bay Area university campus strapped to his electric powered portable gurney. Proof of the film’s heavy subject meets indelible humor is showcased when, moments later, John Hawkes as O’Brien explains why he no longer has the engine powered contraption that moves him around. “I honestly couldn’t see where I was going."

John Hawkes Helen Hunt The Sessions
Filmmaker Ben Lewin (himself a Polio survivor) has crafted a story in The Sessions that could be heavy on the drama given the situation of our main character, but there is an intrinsic humor strewn throughout that is utterly delightful.

Hawkes portrays O’Brien as a man in his forties, who is now a successful poet and writer. After only being given years to live beyond his twenties, he treats each day as the gift that it is. Only thing, he feels something is missing. He has never had a romantic conquest, so as a devout Catholic, he seeks advice from his priest (William H. Macy) as to what to do. Through a fellow handicapped friend, he learns of a sex therapist (Helen Hunt) who specializes in the disabled and aiding them find sexual solace.

Macy plays Father Brendan as compassionate, yet still struggling with the constraints of religious rules. But, he is a modern man with his long hair and sun kissed face that makes him look like he has enjoyed his life to its fullest. The chemistry between Macy and Hawkes is warm, gentle and truly becomes a friendship beyond priest and parishioner.

When Father Brendan looks at the cross with Jesus upon it, contemplates O’Brien’s request to explore his sexuality with this therapist, the priest’s pain and compassion are equally clear in Macy’s face. This most likely will be O’Brien’s only way to experience the ultimate physical manifestation of human contact and something that is clearly a sin as it involves sex before marriage. Macy gloriously says, “In my heart, I feel He'll give you a free pass on this one. Go for it!”

What this The Sessions review salutes above all else is the performance of Hawkes. Throughout his award nominated career he has shown he is a chameleon. Yet in his latest film, he takes that reputation to a whole new level. Not only does he physically contort himself to become the polio stricken character, he captures the man’s deep sense of humor that was prevalent in all of his writings. This is a character that does not take himself too seriously, even with the cards he has been dealt in life.

Helen Hunt The Sessions
Oscar winner Hunt is also a revelation. She handles what could be an extremely awkward situation for any actress with grace. Her Cheryl is equal parts sympathetic, serene and yes, sexual. Without these lessons that she imparts on O’Brien, his life would be a little less full. Through her place in the story, we see that all parts of life’s journey can be experienced, even for those who find themselves firmly planted in a body that does not want to cooperate. She is a vehicle through which we see O’Brien live his best years.

The Sessions is clearly a film that the Academy will notice come nomination time. Not only is Hawkes a shoe-in, but Hunt and Macy have to be given consideration, as does director Lewin for his masterful way of weaving drama, comedy, romance and an all-out affirmation of life itself.

Weekend Movie Preview: October 19, 2012

Compared to last weekend when five new movies hit screens, there are only two contenders to take over the box office spot this week with a third opening in limited release that has Oscar written all over it. Alex Cross features Tyler Perry moving from comedy and dramas to pure crime thriller while Paranormal Activity 4 seeks to capitalize on the franchise's past success by producing another blockbuster. Then, there's The Sessions... a film that is sure to garner Academy Award attention for its star, John Hawkes.

Paranormal Activity 4: The latest in the franchise picks up several years after the second one left off. Katie and Hunter have been missing and their whereabouts are unknown. The film sets the action in a Nevada suburb when a young family takes in a young boy who lives across the street when his mother enters the hospital. The Activity begins, and chronicling it all in the found-footage style made famous by the first film is the teenage girl at the center of our story. Rarely has video technology been so effectively used as in the latest installment. Read our Paranormal Activity 4 review to see if it scares as much as the first three.

Alex Cross: The James Patterson character made famous by Morgan Freeman goes back to the beginning in an origins story of sorts. Perry takes the title role that finds him starring opposite Edward Burns as his police partner and Matthew Fox going gonzo as the villain. The story is uneven, but shows Perry's range as he and Fox have a vicious battle of cat and mouse in director Rob Cohen's latest effort. As we state in our Alex Cross review, the film is decent and we hope for more from the franchise that hopefully will up the ante.

The Sessions: Look for this film to land all over the Oscar race, particularly lead Hawkes, but also supporting players Helen Hunt and William H. Macy. The Sessions chronicles the true story of poet Mark O'Brien and how he, despite his polio stricken body, manages to find joy in life. Check out our The Sessions review for more.

Alex Cross: Director Rob Cohen Swings into Action

According to Alex Cross director Rob Cohen, all one has to do is go to James Patterson’s pages of his novels to see how perfect Tyler Perry is for the title role. "Alex Cross, in the novels, is a 40 to 42-year-old man with two young children, a young wife and a grandmother, although I made Cicely (Tyson) more his mother,” Cohen said exclusively to Movie Fanatic.

Rob Cohen Directs Alex Cross
“He’s very big. When you look at Tyler, he’s 6’6’, 250, strongly built, powerful physical presence -- it seems to me really the right idea.”

When Cohen first met with his star, he immediately tried to get that other acting superstar who had played Alex Cross in Kiss the Girls and Along Came the Spider completely out of his head.

“I said this to Tyler, ‘Morgan created a character that was not the character in the book.’ It was a character created because Morgan was a star and that’s who they wanted to make those films go. He created more of a sage, much more of a gentle, reasonable guy. He was unable to do any serious action and consequently the movies were very procedural and not like what we’re trying to do,” Cohen admitted.

“This Alex Cross is going to be the real one, will be the one that’s in the books. And me, I have respect for the written word. I’m always looking at how people adapt books. I told this to Jim (Patterson) when I first met him, ‘My goal is for you to look at the screen when it’s done and tell me that this is what in a sense you were creating in the novels.’”

Cohen feels that the entire process of bringing Alex Cross to life and working with Perry was one of pure fate. He met the prolific Atlanta-based superstar after one of his live stage plays. “I met Tyler a year before I even heard of Alex Cross as a movie. I think it was Madea’s Family Reunion the theater piece,” Cohen recalled.

“I went backstage to meet him and when he came out, I was just stunned by how big he was. He saw that reaction in my face and said, ‘What are you thinking?’ I said, ‘I’m thinking that you could be an action star.’ He smiled and said, ‘’Great, find me a black xXx.’ A year later, I get the call about Alex Cross and Tyler was literally at the top of the list. I said, ‘Let’s not have a list. Let’s just go get Tyler.’”

The mouse to Perry’s cat in the Alex Cross universe is the villain Picasso, played by Matthew Fox. The former star of Lost utterly terrifies as the serial killer who lives to inflict pain on his victims. The key to making that work, Cohen said, is how in the film and on the set, the two must never meet until their big onscreen showdown.

“When two actors meet in real life, they’re both human beings, they’re both people who have certain civility. They can’t help but be swayed by the humanity of another person. I didn’t want that. Tyler didn’t want it, Matt didn’t want it. They just wanted to know the idea of each other’s character,” Cohen said.

“That really was fundamental, their not knowing each other at all. I didn’t show Tyler Matthew’s dailies or anything. He just had to play it as Alex Cross would have to. There’s somebody out there killing people. We don’t know who he is and when we do make contact, I have no idea where he’s coming from.”

Alex Cross Banner
The man who directed The Fast and the Furious and xXx has a simple theory about action in his films and it has to do with keeping the violence away from an R-rating while still having audiences on the edge of their seats.

“Part of my idea of action is about visceral response and how you create that, both contextually and beat-by-beat. One of the things is if you’re trying to work in the PG-13 -- which is where almost all of my films have been -- you really have to be nimble. Anybody can do blood and guts and gore and sort of torture porn,” Cohen said.

“The thing that you have to do is: How do you go deeper than that and make people feel like they saw it even though they didn’t see it? And how do you keep them engaged moment-by-moment? You have to take those leaps and those ideas and go, ‘I’ve never seen anybody do that.’ And then go see if you can make it work. In this case, it worked.”
