The teaser for the Evil Dead remake is here! It features a small bit of footage, along with video from the panel at New York Comic Con, which includes Bruce Campbell. Take a look:

The original The Evil Dead was surprisingly knocked out of the first round of our Tournament of Movie Fanatic Horror Bracket to find the best horror movie of all time earlier this month. The film launched the careers of Campbell and Sam Raimi, and became a pervasive cult classic.

The remake stars Jane Levy (Fun Size), Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore. Following a similar plotline as the original, it follows a group of teenagers at a cabin in the woods who find the Book of the Dead and accidentally unlock a demonic force.

Evil Dead will hit theaters April 13. Stay tuned for the trailer tomorrow.

Despite insistence earlier this year that James Cameron would focus solely on Avatar from here on out, he's taken up another project. Did anyone really believe him anyway?

Cameron has been tabbed to produce and direct an adaptation of the Taylor Stevens novel The Informationist. The novel follows an Information Specialist who is hired by an oil tycoon to find his missing daughter.

Cameron will finish his work on Avatar 2 and 3 before beginning The Informationist. Those films are currently in pre-production, and are scheduled to be released in December of 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Cloud Atlas: Hugo Weaving Talks Wachowskis & The Hobbit

Hugo Weaving has played of some of the most indelible parts in recent movie memory from The Lord of the Rings series to his iconic role in The Matrix trilogy. Weaving is on screen twice this fall, first in Cloud Atlas and then in the return of Peter Jackson to Middle Earth, The Hobbit.

Hugo Weaving in Cloud Atlas
Movie Fanatic met Weaving for an exclusive interview as he chats playing six roles in Cloud Atlas, as well as giving our readers a front row seat as he reflects on a career that that has also seen him killing it in Captain America and V for Vendetta. “I’ve been very lucky to do all of that,” Weaving said.

Cloud Atlas reunites Weaving with his Matrix and V for Vendetta filmmakers, The Wachowskis, along with Run Lola Run helmer Tom Tykwer in the most ambitious film Movie Fanatic has ever seen.

Weaving welcomed the chance to portray six integral parts in the “weaving” storylines of Cloud Atlas, especially because the filmmakers asked the actors to play so many roles arose out of a film synergy rather than stunt casting.

“They’re not just there to add color and flavor. The film celebrates the cyclical nature of existence and the way things keep repeating themselves and the way structures keep repeating itself, and therefore human souls in some way come back,” Weaving said.

“This sense for us as actors to get to play more than one character in a film, there’s a reason for that… it’s not just a device or whimsy or color. It springs from something that’s in the material. It’s not a bright package than when you open it up contains a pile of (expletive) [laughs]. I think that’s genius.”

He discovered the David Mitchell book six years ago and could never have imagined it would ever make its way to the big screen. “When I read the book, I didn’t see it as a film. It had incredible breadth, sweep and scope and such a puzzle. I loved that,” Weaving said.

Hugo Weaving James D'Arcy Cloud Atlas
It seems the Mitchell novel made its way through the V for Vendetta cast. “I read it around the time we were doing V for Vendetta and Natalie (Portman) had given it to Lana (Wachowski).”

Few actors have worked with the Wachowskis as much as Weaving and although there are some physical changes to the duo, the actor admits they’re still the same barrel of laughs. “Fundamentally they’re totally the same people I met when I first met them -- lots of laughter among us. There are obvious changes in Lana. I met Larry. Larry’s now Lana,” Weaving said.

The actor compares the journey that Larry went on to become Lana as to the one the characters of Cloud Atlas go through.

“The themes in the book speak to her. The bravery of someone in that position has to embody in order to deal with what they’re going through and that is true of all these characters in this film. They’re making a choice because it’s based on a belief they have because, they can’t believe otherwise. In order to make change and make a difference to yourself, you need to be the person you are... even if that process is an ongoing one.”

When he first met the sibling filmmakers, Weaving compared them to your average college geeks who dream big. “They were finishing each other’s sentences. They’re still the same spirits, although older, but as much as a pleasure to be with as they ever were. I feel exactly the same with them as I ever did,” Weaving said.

Next up for fans of Weaving is his return to Middle Earth and The Hobbit. When asked if he ever thought he’d return to his role as Elrond, the mystical elf leader, he didn’t flinch.

“Speaking of cyclical nature of human existence, Middle Earth keeps calling me back. I think there is no escape from Middle Earth,” Weaving said and laughed.

When the Lord of the Rings filming wrapped, Weaving said he looked at Jackson and said, “I’ll see ya on The Hobbit.” Although Jackson told him that he wasn’t going to do The Hobbit, Weaving knew otherwise.

“We all know that it only makes sense that The Hobbit be made and it has to be made by his studio. He said he wasn’t going to direct it, just produce it. Then, of course, finally he’s directing it. Then it was one film, then it was two, and now it’s three,” Weaving said.

He admitted that there may even be a life after The Hobbit trilogy, the way things have gone. “I’m sure I’ll be back there next year for filming and since there’s a third film… I suspect the year after that too -- and possibly… beyond.”

Hugo Weaving The Hobbit
When it comes to a career that is filled with blockbusters, one would be surprised that Weaving would like to be most remembered for his work on smaller features. “It’s certainly a part of my working life, and it’s been a very important part,” Weaving said of hits like The Matrix, Lord of the Rings and Captain America.

“But, in many ways, I suppose the majority of film that I would love to do would be much more low budget, contemporary Australian psychological dramas where there are characters are vast. If I was working on large budget films like those for forever and a day -- that would be very much a major part of my life. It’s just been one facet of my life. A huge joy has been working with Lana and Andy on the Matrix films, V for Vendetta and now Cloud Atlas. This has been a blessing. But, this, Cloud Atlas has been so different in so many ways.”

The first "official" TV trailer for The Hobbit has landed and fans of Gandalf (Ian McKellan) should be thrilled with the new scenes showing our wizardly hero. What's noticeable about this first TV trailer? Well, the humor of author J.R.R. Tolkien shines through and of course, there's plenty of action. The adventure that brings Bilbo out of The Shire and into the larger world of Middle Earth hits screens December 14.

Fans know that when it comes to the story, The Hobbit dwarves dominate! As a huge appreciator of the series, this Movie Fanatic is counting the days, and trailers -- big or small -- only further enhance that longing for more Jackson produced Middle Earth. Thank goodness they worked out the deal that would bring Jackson back to the helm. Can you imagine this series without him? Hardly!

Chasing Mavericks: Gerard Butler Dishes Surfing as Life

Gerard Butler told Movie Fanatic that he had tried surfing only three or four times before accepting the role in Chasing Mavericks. The film is a true story about Frosty Hesson (Butler) and his training of a teenage surfer Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston) to tackle the most dangerous waves on the West Coast, known affectionately by the surfing community as Mavericks.

Gerard Butler Jonny Weston Chasing Mavericks
Butler was learning to fly helicopters flying over Malibu, looking below at the hundreds on their boards waiting for the next wave when it hit him: His next film was booked. “I was like, ‘Look at this. What am I thinking? I need to get a place in Malibu and spend a little bit of time here. I need to take this movie and learn how to surf,’” Butler recalled.

He landed the helicopter and phoned his agent and said, “Let’s do it.”

Chasing Mavericks is more than a surfing movie. The film, co-directed by Curtis Hanson (8 Mile) and Michael Apted (The World is Not Enough), is an inspirational tale of triumphing over fear and what the human body is capable of when it is met with fierce motivation.

Butler himself was beyond driven to tackle surfing, not only to serve the story of Frosty and Jay, but for himself as the sport seemed to have been calling to him. “I found the whole experience really transformative. It’s incredibly meditative and spiritual. When you get up on that wave and become one with it, nothing beats it. You just become one with nature. You’re harnessing that power,” Butler said.

Learning surfing, he admitted, even helped his acting. “You have to be in the moment. You’re constantly learning. I always find that movies where you get to do that are the most enticing and rewarding.”

Tackling the athletic aspect of the character was one thing… encompassing the man who has touched so many was another.

“It was quite a daunting experience. But, you’ve obviously gotta give your interpretation. If you try to imitate somebody, it’s a different story. I’m not Frosty, and I don’t really look like him. But I tried to understand what his essence was, what he was about, what he found exciting and interesting, the way he talks about waves, the way he talks about life, and the way he likes to teach,” Butler said.

“He’s a very philosophical character, and he’s well read. So, I wanted to play that guy who enjoys that, but at the same time, he harbors a lot of pain.”

Speaking of pain, while surfing the Mavericks, Butler was instructed who was boss by an enormous wave. “I was in the water and a big wave came, and it taught me a lesson,” he said and laughed.

“It’s funny because Grant Washburn, who actually taught me to surf, talked about it before it happened. He said, ‘Sometimes the ocean will just hold you down. She’ll pin you down by the shoulders and say, I’m going to let you up this time, but I don’t have to.’ When I was down there, I realized that I was completely at the mercy of this power. I was surprised by how much it came back and hit me. It’s not a pleasant experience.”

Butler admitted he was probably in shock, but in the ambulance after being fished out of the water, he wanted out of the vehicle and back on a board. “I knew it was my last day to film any surfing stuff because we were almost done,” he said.

Jonny Weston Gerard Butler Chasing Mavericks
“I was in a pretty bad way for about 45 minutes, but in the ambulance I wanted to go back in the water. The ambulance driver said, ‘We’ve gotta take you to the hospital and check you out.’ After I’d had time to take stock of what had happened, I thought that maybe I shouldn’t hurry back out there!”

Perhaps it was the theme of Chasing Mavericks that rang through Butler’s head and had him wanting to go back and tackle a Maverick himself. And it is not so much about riding waves as it was the impact one person can have on another. “When you really stop for a moment and think about your friends and family, or go out of your way to do something, or make a sacrifice for yourself where you give up something, in order to achieve something, I find that the pay-off is often huge,” Butler said.

“That’s what came out of this movie. There were the sacrifices that Jay made, and the perseverance and dedication that he showed, and the same with Frosty towards him. And you see the surprising and yet magical results that came from that.”

Top 10 Tom Hanks Movies: Best of an Icon

$
0
0

One of the more difficult Top 10 lists we at Movie Fanatic have ever had to compile has to be our latest that explores the best of Tom Hanks. The national treasure has such variety in his filmography, from comedies and dramas and… oh yeah, there are those two Best Actor Oscars he has at home.

Tom Hanks Picture
Just in time for his most ambitious film to date, Cloud Atlas, we matched that ambition and scope and scoured over the superstar’s career and we're proud to present our Top 10 Movies of Tom Hanks. And by the way, since it’s not out yet, we didn’t put Cloud Atlas on the list, but as you’ll see from our review (publishing October 26), next time out… it will be number one!

10. Joe Versus the Volcano
Take me to the volcano, indeed! The superstar’s first pairing with frequent co-star Meg Ryan is the quirkiest and most charming of movies. Some give Joe Versus the Volcano a bad rap, but we at Movie Fanatic think it is ingenious and wildly inventive.

9. Apollo 13
Houston, there is no problem at all when it comes to Ron Howard’s bringing the fateful mission of Apollo 13 to life. Hanks, longtime space junkie, achieved his dream of playing an astronaut and brought the soul of what those modern day adventurers go through… all in the name of science and furthering the human race.

8. Sleepless in Seattle
One of the most charming movies of all time, Sleepless in Seattle marked Hanks' first collaboration with Nora Ephron and his second film with Ryan. It is impossible to escape the brilliant barrage of Sleepless in Seattle quotes and rightfully so. In Hanks and Ryan’s hands, Ephron’s words come to life with humor and heart.

Tom Hanks Meg Ryan Sleepless in Seattle

7. Toy Story
The film that firmly put Pixar on the map also triumphed because of its casting of Hanks and Tim Allen in the leads. Can you imagine anyone else portraying Woody or Buzz Lightyear? The film’s two sequels may have reached more and more audiences respectively, but we will never forget the first time the magic of the Toy Story world came to life.

6. Big
Proof of Hanks' range beyond his comic background is all over this list. One of the first to show off his comedic and dramatic talents was 1988’s Big. Hanks portrayed a young man who makes a wish that he would be older and bam… he is suddenly. The wonder and awe of a young boy, coupled with the uncomfortable feeling of living in one’s skin that most of us feel as adults, and Big is one of the most joyous of films that captures the imagination of both young and old(er).

5. The Green Mile
Hanks and a stellar cast brought Stephen King’s words to life in a movie that was not only rewarded with a Best Picture nomination, but the adulation of the millions who witnessed its magic. The Green Mile showed another side of Hanks as a death row guard whose encounter with a mystical prisoner (Michael Clarke Duncan) is the stuff of movie legend.

Tom Hanks Green Mile

4. Philadelphia
Hanks won his second Oscar (in a row!) for his portrayal of an AIDS stricken Philadelphia lawyer. When he is subsequently fired, Hanks’ character launches a lawsuit against his former firm, led by his ace in the hole… the always awesome Denzel Washington. Philadelphia is important for many reasons, not the least of which is how it humanized the AIDS crisis and brought the epidemic’s cost to millions who marveled at another Hanks powder keg of a performance.

3. Forrest Gump
There is no question Forrest Gump quotes dominate the movie quoting landscape. But, the winner of a slew of Oscars -- including Best Picture -- is oft discounted because of its microcosm capturing of the baby boomers' time driving American history and pop culture. The Robert Zemeckis film, we believe, still stands the test of time, spawns deep societal questions and inevitably causes tears to pour every time we witness the scene where Gump says goodbye to his beloved Jenny.

2. Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan is not only one of Steven Spielberg’s best, it's also one of Hanks’ as well. The story of a selfless captain who drives his regiment deep into enemy territory to rescue and bring home the titular character paints a picture of World War II unlike any audiences had ever seen. The sacrifice of what Tom Brokaw calls “The Greatest Generation” has never been more pristinely captured.

Tom Hanks Cast Away

1. Cast Away
When Hanks first took the role in Cast Away of a Fed Ex executive who survives a plane crash and spends years alone on a deserted island, it had the Oscar winner thinking, “Will anyone want to watch just me for two hours?” The answer was an unequivocal yes as proof of the power of Hanks’ talent and our unequaled adoration for what he does. No one but him could have pulled off the solo panorama of blinding solitude, crushing depression and the driving spirit of the human race to stay alive at all costs in one visit to the cinema.

Wrong Turn 5: Director Declan O'Brien on Why We Love Horror

$

0

Wrong Turn 5 is out now on Blu-Ray, DVD and On Demand and we phoned director Declan O’Brien (who also wrote the third film and directed the fourth film in the series) to find out what it is about horror movies that we love having scare us so much.

Wrong Turn 5 Blu-Ray
O’Brien also dishes his latest film and the challenges that seem to ever build with each passing movie in the franchise. The biggest thrill had to be working with horror movie legend Doug Bradley, who O’Brien exclusively tells us what that meant to him as a longtime horror buff.

Movie Fanatic: What is it about the Wrong Turn movies that you think have really struck a chord?

Declan O'Brien: I think the thing that’s struck a chord is basically the sheer terror of these three cannibal hillbillies, and over-the-top nasty ways they kill people. And also I think it’s the really dark humor in these films. The fans have a good time watching them. It’s a fun horror movie.

Movie Fanatic: Personally and professionally, what did it mean to you to work with Doug Bradley of the Hellraiser series on Wrong Turn 5?

Declan O'Brien: He’s a great guy. He’s a lot of fun. We got along fantastically. He really brought the character of Maynard to life, just as I had written, just as I had hoped, and delivered an outstanding performance. Professionally, it’s really great to be working with a horror icon. Pinhead took a wrong turn. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Movie Fanatic: What horror movies influenced you when you were a kid?

Declan O'Brien: One of the movies that clicked was The Exorcist. I couldn’t believe that. I’ve had the chance to develop some projects with George Romero and The Living Dead was an incredible movie and incredibly scary and also had social commentary which was really evolved. Those films gave me the love of the genre.

Movie Fanatic: What part of process of making Wrong Turn 5 turned out to be easier than expected and what proved more than a challenge than initially thought.

Declan O'Brien: Nothing is easy on a film [laughs]. It’s like a slow training derailing where you’re trying to keep the train on the tracks. Working with Douglas was very collaborative -- he gave an outstanding performance. What was difficult? Language barriers were difficult -- getting practical effects to work. Trying to come up with solutions when you’re not engineer is difficult. For example, there’s a scene where a body is supposed to go through a snow blower, first time I did it, the head goes fine… the body got wrapped up and it didn’t work. There was not enough blood. What I did, got another dummy, cut it in half and cut out the inside. Go to the butcher store, get some real meat and stick it in there [laughs]. That’s what happened, and it looks fantastic.

Movie Fanatic: What are your proudest moments on the three Wrong Turn movies you worked on?

Declan O'Brien pic
Declan O'Brien:
With the third -- it’s a small budget -- I crashed a prison bus inspired by The Fugitive prison bus crash, and doing that without the train of course, pulling off that stunt was a huge undertaking at that budget. I think it turned out pretty good. On Wrong Turn 4, the physical demands of shooting in Winnipeg in February were hard. It was like shooting a movie in Antarctica! With this fifth one, I’m in Bulgaria and I need a small Virginia town, which I had to build. Getting that whole time built in time and on budget was really difficult.

Movie Fanatic: Even after the real life scares we have in the world, why we still love horror movies?

Declan O'Brien: That’s the Id speaking to us. It’s a way of the brain to feel scared, but in a safe way. It’s cathartic, the release. People have wanted to find a safe way to be scared for centuries.

Movie Fanatic: What onscreen scares you?

Declan O'Brien: An out of focus shot [laughs]! That scares the hell out of me. What scares me in terms of storytelling it’s the sense of isolation and hopelessness and characters you don’t want to see die.

In the mood for horror now? Then be sure to vote in our Tournament of Movie Fanatic Horror Bracket for your fave!

Cloud Atlas: The Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer Talk Fate

When The Matrix and Run Lola Run filmmakers -- Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer -- first met to talk about bringing David Mitchell's epic blockbuster to screens, it hit the brother and sister filmmaking team immediately. The Wachowskis had found a third sibling and Cloud Atlas collaborator!

Tom Tykwer, Lana and Andy Wachowski Cloud Atlas
“The movie suggests this idea that one person can come into your life and completely and utterly change the direction of your life,” Lana said.

“We love the idea that David Mitchell, like Adam Ewing (Cloud Atlas character who is a writer) was on his boat off a windswept island somewhere scribbling this novel. And this novel goes out into the world and Natalie Portman is reading it and then I see it and grab it, then I give it to him [points to Andy] and then he gives it to him [to Tom]. There were ideas and challenges that were in the book that would suddenly materialize and be part of our lives.”

In the film, fateful letters are passed between characters, eventually finding a place where fate would meet destiny. “The book landed in our laps in similar fashion,” Andy added.

Lana then finishes her brother’s sentence, something these siblings do often. “There was this instant, profound connection,” she said of meeting Tykwer.

“We knew that this meeting was going to alter the course of our lives. Him coming through that door to this moment with us sitting here talking to you… is dramatically different from where you’d imagine we’d be if he hadn’t walked through the door.”

Reflecting the directorial love fest that is the trio, Tykwer reported never experiencing a filming effort that was more multi-faceted and glorious. “I wouldn’t have done this movie alone,” he said.

The Cloud Atlas director not named Wachowski believes that at the heart of the trio’s film is a cinematic journey for which audiences are starving.

“There is an audience that is undernourished and wants to be fed. They love to soak up and think and have a full dinner just about what you’ve just seen and then take it to bed and wake up in the morning, still thinking about it. That’s how we fell in love with cinema. We cannot be alone because we meet those people all the time,” Tykwer said.

Halle Berry and Tom Hanks Cloud Atlas
“Our desire to have good movies and substance and complexity connected to movies that are designed for large -- that’s gotten less and less. It’s hard to achieve. People only give you a certain amount of money if there’s a superhero involved.”

Cloud Atlas is based on the vast scope of a novel by U.K. bestseller Mitchell. Six differing stories cross time and space with Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess and James D’Arcy exploring the potential of souls being connected and how fate and randomness has a field day with destiny.

“Everyone loved the project and the only reason it existed was because of that love,” Lana said.

With a novel so expansive in content, the filmmakers found joy with the most surprising of discovery. “We knew we had the final draft of the script when every single scene in it was all three of our favorite scenes.”

“Because, if you know the book… there’s more,” Tykwer interjected. “We had to make a lot of choices in terms in what is needed with the narrative. It was a nice luxury, which is how it should be with every script you direct.”

It is mind-blowing, given the astounding potential canvas that is Cloud Atlas, how the film’s brain trust circled the globe trying to get financing and distribution for their film.

“We went to all the studios and they all passed repeatedly,” Tykwer said.

“With the cast in place,” Lana added.

Tykwer even said that they brought storyboards lit up with the visionary film’s optical pleasantries. “They were just stressed by the idea of this movie. We basically went to every continent and every country and we were passed over,” he said. “France! France didn’t buy this movie.”

“They didn’t buy the movie twice,” Andy joined in. “We went to Cannes with the cast and with us and the script, they said no. We went the next year with the movie! We showed the movie and they passed. Even the UK passed!”

Lana smiled and added her two cents. “The UK passed with Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess…”

“Based on a David Mitchell novel!” Andy finishes his sister’s thought… again!

Tykwer then reported how it does get done. “You go to find crazy people who will invest in it anyway. They do exist,” said. “There’s a huge optimistic part of this with us sitting here actually promoting this movie. It’s encouraging.”

Lana had a unique take on the lack of interest. She knew they were on to something special. “You can look at it as a problem, but also see it as a movie that testifies to the possibility of impossibility of this scale, by its own existence,” she said.

For over a decade, the Wachowskis have not talked to the press, and for the last four years… they have been all about Cloud Atlas.

They are the virtual White Whale of movie journalistic interviews. “We’re going to bring you down to the bottom of the ocean with us!” Lana joked when the subject was broached, winking at our Moby Dick reference.

“We don’t like talking about ourselves -- that is very uncomfortable,” Andy added.

Lana goes back to the beginning of their careers with The Matrix to explain the lack of Wachowski presence in the media as they made Speed Racer and V is for Vendetta.

“During the first Matrix, you feel like it was the beginning of the collapse of your way to inhabit the world. You have essentially anonymity, and that gives you access to a way to participate in civic space. When you lose that anonymity, you can no longer participate in that mode of being. It’s denied to you,” she said.

“We were not willing to give that up, that was too big of a price. We sat down and [it was] said, ‘You have to do press.’ And we said, ‘OK, we won’t make movies.’ Then they said, ‘OK, maybe you don’t have to do press.’ [Laughs]. Then, in the course of things, we changed our minds.”

Despite being attached at an early stage, Ryan Gosling has dropped out of the planned remake of Logan's Run.

Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids) had also been attached to co-star, with Nicholas Winding Refn, who directed Gosling in Drive, attached to direct. There is no word on whether the two will remain involved in the remake, which will reportedly stay truer to the book by William F. Nolan than the 1976 film.

Logan's Run takes place in a futuristic world where nobody is allowed to live past a certain age. Those who attempt to escape their destiny are dubbed "Runners," and are pursued by officers known as "Sandmen." The story follows one Sandman, named Logan, who becomes a Runner. Michael Anderson directed the original, which starred Michael York and Farrah Fawcett.

Gosling will star early next year in Gangster Squad.

Blade Runner Blu-Ray Review: 30 Years of Brilliance

The most impressive aspect of the Blade Runner 30th Anniversary Collector’s Edition four-disc Blu-Ray set is how the Ridley Scott masterpiece does not look like a thirty-year-old movie. Then again, it was timeless when it premiered and one reason why it's one of our top 10 sci-fi movies of all time.

Blade Runner Blu-Ray
Scott has famously tinkered with his second foray into sci-fi after Alien, getting ever closer to his vision for what his Blade Runner should be. Each version has its moments that fans of the film will treasure and in the four-disc set… all four versions are here: The 1992’s Director’s Cut, the Domestic Cut, the International Theatrical version and the rarest of rare Workprint feature.

While a Blade Runner reboot or sequel has aficionados talking, they will treasure the new photos that have emerged and showcased in a 72-page art book containing over 1,000 archive images that takes you further inside the magic of what Scott achieved when the film arrived in 1982. There is also the 10-plus hours of bonus content that was initially featured in the 2007 home video release.

The box set that we received cause a bit of a gasp upon its reveal. Blade Runner was one of the films that put the fanatic in this Movie Fanatic.

Two things stare at you, the LCD image of an women smiling at the camera in a shot from the vividly designed Scott set… and a toy. Yes, it’s a tiny replica of the Spinner car used in 2019 Los Angeles in the film.

Package bonuses aside, whether to bring home the 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray of Blade Runner comes down to what’s inside and that is nothing short of brilliance at work. Harrison Ford may be better known for Han Solo or Indiana Jones, but it is his performance in Blade Runner as Rick Deckard that should sit right alongside those two iconic roles. Watching him track down replicants after three decades is still something to marvel. The nuances of his action hero with a sense of humor were truly further honed on Scott’s set.

And don’t get us started on the power of Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty. Has a villain rarely been so equally vicious and vicarious? And as a fan of Scott's work over the years, it's fascinating to go between the various versions of the film and search for little Easter Eggs of what the visionary filmmaker saw as he further tweaked his film towards perfection.
