Breaking Dawn Part 2: Stephenie Meyer Bids Twilight Goodbye

Now that Breaking Dawn Part 2 is set to close the Stephenie Meyer Twilight world, there have been hints of a Jacob-Renesmee spin-off. Meyer told Movie Fanatic there are ideas, but how far they will go… she doesn’t know.

Stephenie Meyer Photo
“I had planned out where it would go, for a couple more books, so I know exactly what would happen. There are other characters that I think would have had a lot of voice, in those coming stories. I don’t know,” Meyer said. The audience for those future Twilight books may be quite small. “Someday I’ll write it out, just for myself. We’ll see.”

Meyer is even coyer when asked whether she would ever consider handing off the series to some other creative type while she worked on other things. “I’ve been pretty hands on,” she admitted, something echoed in our Taylor Lautner interview.

“It’s a hard thing. I’m going to be the same way when my kids go off to college. I am a hands-on mom, and these characters really do feel like my kids. It’s hard to have them doing things that don’t sound like them. Not with the movies, but with some other things. I’ve seen other people’s versions of what the characters speak like and it just doesn’t seem right. So, I don’t know if that would ever be something that I’d be fine with. In 10 years, who knows?”

When having Breaking Dawn Part 2 adapted by longtime Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, Meyer worked closely with the scribe to alter a few things from her book to benefit the cinematic close to the Twilight Saga. “When Melissa and I sat down, we first said, ‘Are we going to make Breaking Dawn into a movie? Will it be one or two? What are we going to do?’ And we knew the end would be something we had to crack,” Meyer said.

Fans of the series have debated the literary conclusion and their response to it on screen will certainly be one that garners much discussion. “We hashed it out and came up with something that, in a way, I feel is off screen in the novel because we only see what Bella sees. This was just a way of making visual what some of the other characters might have been seeing,” Meyer admitted.

“It does feel very surprising. Watching it, I still have that moment where I go, 'Oh, right, we did that, didn’t we?!' There’s definitely something new to see, but to me, it doesn’t feel like it’s going hugely off the page, at all.”

As this is the end, it is natural to revisit the beginning. Meyer famously had a dream of Edward and Bella in the mid-2000s and awoke to furiously put pen to paper. “Sometimes ideas feel like they were already there and that you’re just discovering them. It definitely was a much more persistent idea than many I had had before. It was something that I was just wrapped up in and intrigued with. It was a really great summer,” she said and smiled.

“It was probably one of the best summers of my life, when I got to just live in Forks, for the first time.”

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Breaking Dawn Part 2
Speaking to the nature of fate perhaps, Meyer’s future became forever linked to how long it took her to go from awaking from dream-filled slumber to author of Twilight. “Not 15 minutes! My babies were little then and my memory was trash,” she said about the fury of getting the story committed to paper.

“I enjoyed that little story in my head so much. I woke up from it and sat there and imagined the conversation [between Edward and Bella], how it would have gone and what would have happened next. Then, I thought, ‘I’m going to forget this by tonight.’ So, as soon as the kids were fed, I started typing it out, just to help me remember. It was pretty instantaneous.”

When it comes to the draw of why she composed a story about vampires versus something else, the author doesn’t necessarily see it as a metaphor for anything in particular -- just another way to look at the journey of life. “Vampirism, for me, was a way to live in fantasy and have superpowers, but not just in a really perfect, happy, everything is great way. It’s superpowers with a cost,” Meyer said.

She then describes the world she created for Edward and it gets to the heart of why he continually dissuaded Bella from becoming a vampire.

“With Edward, I think he resists happiness a lot, in the first three books. He’s afraid that he doesn’t deserve it. He’s seen a few examples of people being turned into vampires and not being very happy with it, and he’s not entirely happy with it himself. He always feels like he didn’t have a choice. He wonders, 'Is he now, by definition, a villain and a bad person?' He doesn’t want Bella to feel that way,” Meyer said.

"In retrospect, it works great for her and she’s perfectly happy. But, he’s a very cautious person. Becoming a vampire is forever. You don’t get to change your mind about it later."

M80 contacted Movie Fanatic to write a post about the new James Bond, Skyfall inspired phone from AT&T. As a fan of the movie, and the series, it was a no brainer. After all, yours truly proudly presented the Top 10 Bond films, Top 10 Bond themes, Top 10 Bond girls and many more highlights from Bond history… this would be the ultimate experience for a 007 fan -- a real Bond gadget!. But, it has turned out to be so much more.

James Bond Phone
The pre-loaded videos took me inside the world created for the latest Bond flick and only reinforced what was covered in my Skyfall review.

Each time I receive a new message, the notification sound is the end of the iconic James Bond theme! The wallpaper is the equally iconic bullet view, but the joy of the Sony Mobile Xperia TL is that it is uncanny in its ability to be inspired by and then go beyond the movie experience. Whether it would work for other franchises, I’m not sure. But for Bond, Xperia and 007 is a match made in heaven. And like Bond himself, it is lightning fast with 4G that makes loading new Skyfall videos a true pleasure.

Stay tuned as I delve deeper into the device and discover its deep Bond-like secrets as Skyfall is currently in theaters and it will likely be seen by this writer for a third time very soon.

Anna Karenina Review: New Vision for Old Story

$
0
0

Joe Wright has directed a version of Anna Karenina that is as lush as Leo Tolstoy’s book, but it is a vision of the iconic work that is completely unexpected.

Jude Law Keira Knightley Anna Karenina
Keira Knightley stars as the title character, a nineteenth century Russian woman who marries for privilege and money, then begins to slowly regret it as she meets a dashing military officer (Aaron Taylor Johnson). Her husband (Jude Law) is not having any of it and makes her life a tad challenging to say the least.

Jude Law astounds in a performance that is equally steely and sentimental. It caps off a year that found him pushing boundaries with Contagion. Law's portrayal of Karenin is so rooted in the morays of the day. Feudal Russia has not yet embraced Marx and the Czars and their royal families are still living the high life, but as seen in Anna Karenina, they are not necessarily happy. Law handles the duties of portraying an individual who resides in such a time with Oscar worthy grace.

Knightley astounds as a woman who in public appears to be right where she wants to be at every moment. Yet through Knightley's layered portrayal of the literary legend, her deeper character vastness emerges within Wright's world. She yearns for more than the imperial four walls she shares with her husband. Russia is made to feel like the center of the universe in Anna Karenina and it is clear that the title character seeks to be in the middle of all of it. As everyone knows who has tried to do it all, you cannot.

As shown in this Anna Karenina trailer, what sets the film apart is how the director and his cinematographer Seamus McGarvey have literally set their landscape borrowing from the Shakespeare line that all the world’s a stage. For almost eighty-percent of the film, it feels like the most lavishly filmed Broadway or West End produced production of all-time. And we salute Wright for taking that kind of unique angle on telling a story that has been told hundreds of times.

Aaron Taylor Johnson Keira Knightley Anna Karenina
Yet, Wright abandons that set modus operandi deep in the third act and showcases the full expanse of the Russian landscape to his audience. How did we go from a horse race that we see is awkwardly staged in a theater to the wilds of snow-adorned rural Russia? At that point, the audience is so engrossed in this Tolstoy imagined journey that the sudden shift in tone is easy to forgive while so lost in its beauty.

The cast rises to the occasion of portraying characters that have been revered by audiences for centuries. Yes, Knightley deserves some Oscar love, so too does Law… but also the mind-blowing work of Johnson should not be ignored. He portrays the playboy military officer Vronsky, who has his way with the world until he meets Anna. Once he meets her, Johnson begins a slow journey towards train wreck that is astounding in the hands of the UK actor and star who excelled in Oliver Stone's latest, as we note in our Savages review.

Our Anna Karenina review can unequivocally state that Wright has given an old story new life. He also gets his actors to put on a clinic with rich dialogue and equally lush landscapes… both theatrical and natural.

Silver Linings Playbook Review: Sunny in Philadelphia

Bradley Cooper has truly come into his own as a dramatic actor, as we stated in our The Words review. Sure, he has always had the power to be a cinematic leading man. But illustrating the actor’s truly deep emotional talents is his latest film, Silver Linings Playbook.

Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper Silver Linings Playbook
Cooper portrays Pat, who we meet as he is released from a Baltimore mental facility after an eight-month stint because of some “incident.” Well, we learn that he found his wife in the shower with another man and beat him within inches of his life. Yes, he had a rage issue, but upon further examination, it is determined that he is bipolar and in need of help.

When he leaves the hospital, everyone treats Pat with kid gloves on one hand while the other hand is holding a phone, ready to call the cops. But, his parents (Jackie Weaver and Robert De Niro) try their best to help him while he makes it all the way back to sanity. But things get complicated when he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a woman with more than a few problems of her own.

As shown in the Silver Linings Playbook trailer, ballroom dance plays a part in the film. We won’t say how, or for that matter why, but its use of it as a vehicle to heal these two wounded souls is rooted in the book by Matthew Quick. So, it’s hard to fault, but perhaps filmmaker David O. Russell -- whose work we adore -- didn’t see it as an integral part of the film that the story demanded as opposed to other arenas such as Pat’s relationship with his father.

That part, this Silver Linings Playbook review has to state, is simply exquisite. De Niro has not been this nuanced in two decades. If he is not nominated for Best Supporting Actor, this writer will stop following the Oscars! Watching De Niro and Cooper bond over their beloved Philadelphia Eagles are cinematic moments to treasure. And although Lawrence has been buzzed about as a leader in the Best Actress race, she astounds, but does not run away with the prize. The Hunger Games star further pushes her A-list dramatic actress prowess initially shown with her first Oscar nod for Winter’s Bone.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook
And after Cooper’s twin tower 2012 performances in The Words and his latest, Movie Fanatic is curious where he goes next. Does he continue his box office titan quest, a la Limitless and The A-Team, or take on more roles as challenging as that of the bipolar, depressed individual who is trying to win his wife back by proving he is as normal as ever in the more often brilliant than not Silver Linings Playbook?

Lastly, we would be remiss not to mention the performance of Chris Tucker. He is finally back onscreen as Cooper’s friend and kills it in his return. Welcome back, you talented individual!

This edition of the Weekend Movie Preview is all about Twilight as Breaking Dawn Part 2 premieres. The final chapter in the Stephenie Meyer saga finally lands in theaters, but it is not alone. The epic Steven Spielberg film Lincoln releases nationwide and Oscar movie fans will treasure the performances in Anna Karenina and Silver Linings Playbook.

Breaking Dawn Part 2: The Twilight Saga officially ends as the love story of Edward and Bella comes to a close. Fans will line up in droves for this one and look for the film to break box office records before the weekend is out. As we state in our Breaking Dawn Part 2 review, Twi-hards will find it a five-star spectacle while other film-goers might actually enjoy this one!

Lincoln: Spielberg scores what may be his highest achievement yet in bringing the complex world of Abraham Lincoln to life. Daniel Day Lewis should just be given the Oscar for Best Actor with his uncanny performance as our 16th president. As we reported in our Lincoln review, the supporting cast rivets as Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Sally Field and James Spader all rise to the occasion.

Silver Linings Playbook: Again, another great acting-driven film hits theaters in limited release today before going wide November 21. Bradley Cooper further pushes his acting envelope after the solid performance earlier this year in The Words. Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro both have quite a lot of Oscar buzz around them for their roles. For more, check out our Silver Linings Playbook review.

Anna Karenina: Keira Knightley was born to play the title character in Tolstoy’s classic novel. The Joe Wright-directed film is lush, even if it loses a bit of luster at the 75-percent through mark. Jude Law and Aaron Taylor Johnson both astound, as mentioned in the Movie Fanatic Anna Karenina review. The film opens in limited release today, and goes wide November 21.

Breaking Dawn Part 2: Melissa Rosenberg on Twilight History

$

0

Melissa Rosenberg has a unique take on the Twilight Saga phenomenon. She has written every single script from the first (with its legendary Twilight quotes) through Breaking Dawn Part 2. The screenwriter met Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview taking us through the process of writing with author Stephenie Meyer’s encyclopedia brain of all things Twilight.

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Breaking Dawn Part 2
She clearly appreciates the enormous opportunity that was being able to pen all five scripts. “It’s a turning point for me professionally. It was a turning point creatively; I learned so much with these books. I’ve learned so much about adaptation, about craft of screenwriting. It was a tremendous education in that regard. Also, professionally it brought opportunities,” Rosenberg said.

Initially she was only contracted for Twilight. It is rare that a franchise keeps the same director or screenwriter. Heck, the Twilight Saga had four directors. “I just went from one to the other to the other, which is a good way to do it,” she said and smiled.

Writing is such a solitary process, yet for Rosenberg, having Meyer a phone call away not only aided her creativity, but she got a lifelong friend in the process. “We get along so well. She is absolutely a priceless resource. Any time I had an idea or was stuck on something, I would call her,” Rosenberg said.

“Every single character, it doesn’t matter how small a part they are, has an entire backstory in her mind. She has worked out the entire mythology down. Even things as small as: What color are the wolves? I need to define each wolf. It’s all either in the book or in her mind.”

The final Twilight film features an ending that is a little different than the book, as we discuss in ourBreaking Dawn Part 2 review. It works quite well and Rosenberg told us that it was a magical night with Meyer when the two met for some steaks. It’s an incredibly iconic moment for me,” Rosenberg admitted. “It was just one of those moments you remember the light bulb goes on.”

The screenwriter appreciated the creative leeway she had in penning the final script. Because the books are from Bella’s perspective, she was able to take the action elsewhere onscreen. Yet she still culled her inspiration from the material’s source.

“I got to do a lot of creating in Breaking Dawn Part 2, but it’s all coming out of the book. Things happen like Carlyle goes to find Alistair in England. He comes back and tells, 'I found Alistair in England.' Because it’s a movie, I get to go with him to England. We get to go with Rosalie and Emmett and find Garrett. I got to do all this adventure, but it is all formed by the book. That made it the most fun movie for me because I got to do stuff like that. And Stephenie loved it. She always wanted to go away from Bella’s perspective. She and I had a great dinner that night, I tell you.”

Whether to break Breaking Dawn into two films was always up to Rosenberg and Meyer. “It was a hard decision which the studio left to Stephenie and I. How much story do we have? It became really clear that there are two movies here, and an obvious break,” she said. “Stephenie felt the same way. If it was one movie, it would have short-changed the story.”

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Star in Breaking Dawn Part 2
The success of another franchise’s splitting one book into two only helped. “The fact that Harry Potter worked -- they managed to split a book into two and the audience stayed with them -- that definitely affected things,” Rosenberg admitted.

Now that the end is officially here for everyone in the Twilight universe, Rosenberg -- as others told us (like in our Robert Pattinson interview) -- is excited for the future. “I have some dreams-come-true opportunities now. And this franchise let me get there,” she said.

She will miss the Twilight premieres, though. “This is the last one of these. It’s always such an extraordinary experience and a reunion. It’s also for me -- I get to wear some fabulous dress. For writers, to be able to go to a premiere and have a princess moment -- I got to do that five times. I’ve kind of gotten used to it,” Rosenberg said and laughed.

“There will never be premieres I’ll attend like a Twilight premiere. Watching the kids, I compare it to the Beatles visiting Ed Sullivan.”

Top 10 Remakes Coming Soon: Red Dawn is the Beginning

$

Red Dawn seems like a film that Hollywood would have stayed away from in the remake department. Heck, even its title is outdated as it refers to the Red Menace that was the Soviet Union. Yet, switch out North Korea for Russia and we’ve got a Chris Hemsworth-starring movie (check out our exclusive Red Dawn trailer) landing in theaters November 21.

That got Movie Fanatic thinking about what other films are heading our way that may seem like odd choices given their generational-defining moments and how difficult the task must be to replicate lightning in a bottle. We present the Top 10 that are coming soon -- whether you want them or not -- from our least interested to quite compelled.

There are defining movies and then there is Dirty Dancing. It had all the elements of capturing a moment in time in terms of how it added up to a blockbuster. It featured Patrick Swayze in a role he was born to play and the same should be said about Jennifer Grey. It had an Oscar-winning theme song that to this day resonates. There are priceless Dirty Dancing quotes that are so iconic -- there is no way to imagine anyone else saying those lines.

9. Point Break
Another Patrick Swayze film and more news that a Point Break remake is in the works. The 1991 film put Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow on the map and featured the mad crazy good casting of Swayze as an extreme sport loving bank robber and Keanu Reeves in the role of a washed-up college football star turned FBI agent who goes undercover with Swayze’s team. Reading that description above -- it honestly sounds like a silly movie. Yet, with Bigelow directing her born to play the roles cast (including the impeccable Gary Busey), it worked. Why try to replicate magic? It won’t work.

8. About Last Night
Demi Moore and Rob Lowe defined a generation, pre-AIDS, post sexual revolution that was dealing with the emotional issues of yuppie-dom. It’s hard to imagine it being relevant today, except with the casting of Kevin Hart anchoring a modern, urban version of the Chicago sexcapade story, and we’re intrigued with the About Last Night remake news.

7. Overboard
As told to Movie Fanatic in our exclusive Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard interview, the utterly cute duo is remaking Overboard. The original 1980’s film featured real life loves Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Since the film is not as decade defining (other than the original’s dated soundtrack and fashion), this could work. I could see Bell as a high falutin woman of the new millennia and Shepard as the rural, backwards thinking man who sees his wife barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.

6. Commando
We heard in our exclusive End of Watch writer-director David Ayer exclusive interview that the man adores police stories. Then why would he be drawn to remake the 1980’s action film featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger? Perhaps that character is the ultimate enforcer of the law? Ayer has already written a script and given his screenplays for Training Day and End of Watch; a Commando remake with the right star (perhaps Dwayne Johnson?) sounds interesting to say the least.

5. Annie
A hip-hop remake of the Broadway classic that leapt to the big screen in the early 1980s is as good of a reason to remake a film as there comes. If filmmakers are going to update a classic film story, something original should be the reason why. Will Smith and Jay-Z are co-producing the film that is set to be a starring vehicle for Willow Smith. Smith had great success with re-doing The Karate Kid for his son Jaden, why not Annie for Willow? Plus, with an all-new soundtrack that combines the legendary Broadway tracks with original material from Smith and Jay-Z… what’s not to love about this idea?

4. Evil Dead
Since fans adored the original Evil Dead, remaking it might seem a bit of a risk. Yet, it is a wildly held belief that as good as that film was, it missed the mark when it comes to what should have been done with an Evil Dead movie. As seen in the latestEvil Dead trailer, it looks like filmmakers in 2012 have managed to listen to those concerns for a beloved franchise that appears to be heading into its second life.

3. My Fair Lady
Now, the remake of the iconic My Fair Lady is only at the purely rumor stage. But given who is said to be taking the roles that Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison made famous onscreen, we are so on board with this remake. Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan are the latest to circle the project and with those two expressing such interest, consider a My Fair Lady remake pretty much a lock.

2. Carrie
You’ve seen the Carrie trailer, and what at first seemed a “what were they thinking?” remake decision, now appears utterly brilliant. Stephen King’s story of a picked-on teen could not be more relevant today than it was in 1976 when Sissy Spacek made her bullying classmates pay in a blood-soaked prom scene that is still iconic. With Chloe Grace Moretz starring in the title role and Oscar winner Julianne Moore cast as her mother, anticipation could not be higher.

1. Robocop

Robocop defined the 1980’s view of the future when it premiered with Peter Weller as the robotic hero. The greed is good decade’s fingerprints are all over it... so how does one even attempt to update? First, sign a solid actor in Joel Kinneman who will kill it as the legendary film character. Second, add star wattage with Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman. Third, hire someone outside the studio system to direct in Brazilian José Padilha, and the excitement level explodes for Robocop 2012 when it lands August 9, 2013. Try watching the Robocop teaser trailer and not getting a little excited!
