Red Dawn: Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki on Updating Classic

John Peck and Adrianne Palicki know the resonance the first Red Dawn had on audiences. When the duo met Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview, that fact became abundantly clear. “Immediately when Red Dawn was introduced into my life, I’d bring it up with friends who are in their early thirties and I realized, you were talking about something sacred,” Peck said. He then imitated his friends' reaction. “Watch your mouth, bro!”

Palicki and Peck laugh at the sentiment, but upon first watching it over three years ago, the actress knew immediately why people adore the classic Cold War film. “I remember thinking, ‘We have a lot to live up to,’” Palicki said. As shown in our exclusive Red Dawn trailer, they have certainly tried.

As seen in the G.I. Joe: Retribution trailer, Palicki is knee deep in the action movies of late. But, it sounds as if she would treasure a little less punching and a little more kissing with her future work. “I wouldn’t mind a rom-com,” she said. “You know, not get hurt onset!”

“I want a movie where the big scene of the day is a walk and talk,” Peck added as they both laughed. “Not, ‘We’re going to drop you from ten stories, watch your head.'"

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Casting News: Sam Claflin and 3 Others Test for Harry Osborn

Casting for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been well underway for the past few weeks, with director Marc Webb adding Shailene Woodley a Mary Jane Watson and still trying to lock down Jamie Foxx to play Electro.

Now casting team has moved on to the role of Harry Osborn. They seem to be unsure what they are looking for. Last week, rumors were flying that they were leaning toward a darker, more brooding actor to take on the role of Peter Parker's friend-turned-nemesis, with Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, and Brady Corbet auditioning.

Sam Claflin Photo

Today it's back to the drawing board, as four new actors have answered the new call for an attractive, athletic type. Apparently Douglas Booth, Sam Claflin (who will play Finnick Odair in Catching Fire), Boyd Holbrook, and Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) are all auditioning for the role.

Who would make the best Harry? Should The Amazing Spider-Man 2 do what it can to steer away from James Franco's portrayal of the character in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below!

Rise of the Guardians: Cast Chats Playing Childhood Icons

$

The stars of the new DreamWorks animated gem, Rise of the Guardians, have gathered once again to talk to Movie Fanatic about this one-of-a-kind film. Alec Baldwin plays North, the leader of our group of childhood heroes… better known as Santa Claus. Hugh Jackman is the Easter Bunny, Isla Fisher portrays the Tooth Fairy and Star Trek star Chris Pine inhabits Jack Frost. And the final Guardian doesn’t say a word, yet his presence is strong… Sandman!

Rise of the Guardians Cast
Rise of the Guardians is based on the book by William Joyce and follows the heroes of childhood imaginations as they band together to fight Pitch (Jude Law), the man more often called The Boogie Man, as he seeks to squelch the feelings of hope and awe that children possess.

The movie works on many levels, one of its stars asserted. “Rise of the Guardians is probably one of the greatest things that kids will get to see because it’s all their favorite characters come to life in one movie,” Jackman said. “These Guardians all know each other, they work together in looking after kids and guarding over them to make sure they have a great childhood. Pitch comes in to ruin the party.”

Pine added that what Pitch is attacking is simple, yet wide-reaching in its complexity over a population of youthful believers. “Pitch thrives on fear, and that can cause the loss of children’s belief in their childhood heroes,” Pine said. Pitch's plan is simple: Inject doubt in children's minds as to the existence of these icons and they will simply disappear. They only exist because of the wonder in children's dreams.

Evil is so strong in Pitch, it requires a different kind of hero to combat him. “In order to be able to take on Jude Law in the movie you have some contemporizing quality to these heroes, like my character,” Baldwin said. “He’s got the tattoos that say, ‘Naughty’ and ‘Nice.’ You can almost see him taking apart a Harley in the garage [laughs].”

Baldwin had a ball portraying Saint Nick, with his thick Russian accent, the leader of our band of childhood heroes. “It’s like the justice league of innocence. All the icons of childhood gather to save innocence in the world,” Baldwin said.

Jackman appreciated the universal message of Rise of the Guardians, something children cannot hear enough of as it’s something Jack Frost struggles with for the first half of the film. “Jack Frost represents the main thing: Finding yourself by doing things for others. By being in service of others, you get to join a team and become bigger than yourself. Also, having faith in believing in doing the right thing pays off,” Jackman said.

As shown in this Rise of the Guardians TV spot, Frost has been recruited to join the Guardians after centuries on his own creating snow and ice-centered joy. He’s not sure he wants to join. “In this story, this mythology we’re creating, for the past 300 years, he’s kind of been roving and roaming the Earth with no place to call a home. He’s the guardian of fun and mischief… and snow days and snow ball fights,” Pine said.

Cast of Rise of the Guardians
Even though we have the classic heroes of childhood, Jack Frost is the character least believed in and as such, if he can get children to believe in him, Pitch will be powerless. Jack holds the key to the fight for children’s imaginations. “Although kids enjoy his work, they don’t associate that with Jack Frost,” Pine said. He then reflects what Jackman said about the beauty of the film’s message. “Our film is about believing and how belief gives power and life.”

But a question is asked of Frost and it could be one of the most important questions asked of anyone. “What is your center? What are you meant to do? Jack’s story, that’s it,” Pine added. “It’s so human. What were we put on this earth to do? What are we supposed to do? I like that about Jack and how it relates to the entire story.”

Each star shares a wonder that is marveling at the look of Rise of the Guardians. Isla Fisher, for one, was mesmerized. “It’s almost like each image has been painted. You can individually see the brush strokes of every character,” Fisher said. “It doesn’t have a contemporary feel and there are no popular culture references in the movie. It’s more of a special and classic tale.”

“It is so beautiful, the colors and landscape. It’s a beautiful sweet story too. I haven’t seen anything out there now that’s as beautiful as this is,” Baldwin concurred.

Jackman believes that the film is unlike any people have ever seen, as proven in this Rise of the Guardians featurette. “Visually this movie is very different and very ambitious. It’s got a very sophisticated and beautiful look,” Jackman said. “It’s everything you expect from DreamWorks Animation. It’s first class. But there is a depth to it and I think visually a sophistication to it.”

Life of Pi: Ang Lee Talks Making Visual Marvel

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has had quite the varied career and further proof of that innovation was evident with the first Life of Pi trailer. The filmmaker behind Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Hulk is equally at home with small indies and big blockbusters. He further pushes his comfort zone with the filmed-in-3D epic based on the bestselling book Life of Pi by Yann Martel.

Suraj Sharma Life of Pi
Movie Fanatic met Lee in Las Vegas to talk about Life of Pi and from the sound of it, when he read the novel, he wasn’t sure a film was even possible. “The book is good on its own merit. It’s fantastic and mind-boggling. In terms of thinking of it as a movie, it feels impossible. The premise of the book kills movies,” Lee said and laughed.

The story of Pi is about a young Indian man who, while moving via ship to Canada with his family, finds himself alone in a life raft with a tiger. His family's boat sunk in an insane storm. Pi’s family owned a zoo in India and when times got tight, they packed up the animals on a ship and sailed with them to North America to sell them to another zoo and settle in the Great White North.

Immediately Pi must find how to survive the open ocean, but also not becoming a meal to the vicious hunter. For any filmmaker, the story would bring challenges. Yet when Lee thought about making his first shot-in-3D movie, it all started to come together. “That was really exciting, the idea of making it in 3D. That is what made me think making the movie was possible because such a big part of the movie is visual,” Lee said. “That was more intimidating than all the technical challenges.”

The director admitted that he is the type of man who, when a challenge seems unsurpassable, he and his team dive in. “When it comes to technical, we’re fools! We’ll try anything that we think will work. You just get that somehow, someway it is going to work,” Lee said.

But it was the telling of Pi’s story and the vast landscape created by the book in his head that Lee wondered how to bring to the screen.

“The essence of the book is in his mind and channels the power of imagination. If you want to capture that, you are making an expensive movie which has to have broad appeal to the public. You stretch the power of the storytelling and examine it at the same time. That’s the most daunting challenge that I faced. In some ways, that’s what I get hooked on because it seems so impossible. After 20 years, I can still make a movie like a virgin,” he said, laughing.

It's teased in thisThe Life of Pi featurette... the fact that the story has an open-for-interpretation ending. Its biggest asset is how it opens up a platform for discussion. “It’s about thinking about the unthinkable -- the leap of faith when it comes to the subject matter of God. How is our emotional relation with the unknown? There’s also the concept of fate, you cannot prove it and movies are very realistic media,” Lee said.

How do you discuss illusion and the importance of illusion when it comes to surviving on the open water for weeks at a time with a ferocious Bengal tiger? “That is more important than reality in this case. That’s something as an artist and storyteller, I deeply appreciate. It brings out the power of storytelling in relationship to God and how that brought meaning to life and how it brings us together,” Lee said.

Making the film was an effort as vexing as recalling the long train of numbers that shares the film’s titular character’s name. “We have to share a story in order for it to have meaning in life. Otherwise, it’s like the number pi -- it’s an irrational number that goes on and on. The book is brilliant. But, it’s difficult because a movie works on an emotional level.”

The key to making the story work is the casting of Pi. “If you want to spend that much time in the ocean alone, he must be watchable. And he’s not Tom Hanks,” Lee said and laughed. “He has to look intelligent and emotional… that is all important.”

When Suraj Sharma walked in and auditioned, Lee knew he had his man. “As you see, he has a very compelling face. Most of all, I think the biggest talent an actor has is their ability to have the audience believe them. The investment of belief is what counts,” Lee said.

Ang Lee on Life of Pi Set
The director, who has worked with about as many A-list actors as they come, had found a match made in heaven for his complex tale. “Suraj is just one of those people who have a natural talent. He never really acted before. He kept proving [himself] over the three months that we shot only him on the water. He did every shot. We shot chronologically so he could lose weight. It’s quite an ordeal for a 17-year-old boy who never got sick, never got injured, never lost focus… you have to take that as a gift.”

Now that he had his Pi, his team went to work on the other half of this survival story: The tiger. “It’s a mix of real and CG,” Lee said of the cinematic adversary to our hero. “It was a daunting act for the visual effects team. We have a real tiger and you have to deliver that in 3D and people cannot tell. They took the challenge.”

The rewards of Lee using 3D on Life of Pi have been much chronicled of late. The great professor of the filmmaking technique has even chimed in. “Hollywood should see what Ang Lee has done,” James Cameron said. “And they should be on 3D like seagulls on a French fry.”

Lee found it rewarding, albeit a bit strange. “In terms of shooting, it’s clumsy. It’s not handy. Changing lenses used to take a minute. It will take at least 20 minutes for 3D. You have to think about it before you make a move. Sometimes there are technical problems, and you just don’t know what to do,” he said.

“It takes a long time to sort things out. I think it will get much better now. It’s like every three months they invent something new. It’s just a learning process. But many times, obstacles are the vehicle for invention. It was quite an adventure. It’s really exciting that you are pushing the film envelope. You are breaking and setting new rules.”

Expendables 2 Blu-Ray Review: More Lethal Weapons

$

When Sylvester Stallone gathered a bunch of over-the-hill action stars for 2010’s The Expendables, the world was shocked when it became a blockbuster. Stallone brought the band back together for a sequel and amped up the star power, giving expanded roles for first film vets Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis and adding action superstars Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme. Audiences responded in droves and now fans and those that missed the action folly in theaters can check it out as The Expendables 2 lands on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Expendables 2 Blu-Ray
Movie Fanatic received the Blu-Ray, Digital Copy and Ultraviolet combo pack and, as stated in our The Expendables 2 review, we like this film much more than the first. So, it has that going for it. But, then diving into the Blu-Ray extras, The Expendables experience is even more explosive.

As he did in our exclusive Simon West interview, the director sounds like a kid in a candy store with the audio commentary he provides for the film. Directing what must have seemed like all of his action heroes from his formative years, was clearly pure bliss. Also noteworthy is the stellar featurette Gods of War: Assembling Earth’s Mightiest Anti-Heroes. Sometimes behind-the-scenes bits feel a tad mailed in, like they have to do this for the home video release and no heart is put into it. Not so with The Expendables 2.

Another not-to-miss feature is the Big Guns, Bigger Heroes: The 1980’s and the Rise of the Action Film documentary. For fans of movies of that era, it is priceless. Anyone new to the appreciation of Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis will gather an understanding of where their greatness emanated from.

Action movie aficionados will also treasure a rare featurette that should be included in all war-based action flicks. On the Assault: The Real-Life Weaponry of The Expendables gives audiences a front row seat to the reality behind the fiction, only further enhancing the war-torn feel of The Expendables world.

One complete surprise to the Blu-Ray extras is something that is standard and feels a bit played out on comedy discs, and that is the gag reel. But, The Expendables 2 gag reel is pure comic gold. Nothing funnier than a group of tough guys who can laugh at their own mistakes and miscues!

Red Dawn Review: Rally for Wolverines

$
0
0

When Red Dawn first premiered in 1984, it was so a movie of the time. The “Red Menace,” aka the Soviet Union, was still the U.S.’s hardcore enemy as our nukes and their nukes stared each other down in a Cold War that would defrost merely years later.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Chris Hemsworth Red Dawn
For those of us that remember the Patrick Swayze-starring film, it felt real, as if Russians invading America was a true possibility. Fast forward to 2012 and we have a new Red Dawn, where the enemy is North Korea and among a youthful cast, Chris Hemsworth is our star.

That original film also starred Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Grey… all who would become big stars of the decade. Red Dawn 2012 features a cast of youthful actors that could themselves find their way to stardom in the coming years. Friday Night Lights’Adrianne Palicki and Josh Peck as well as The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson are the kids who follow Hemsworth’s lead in seeking to be the spark of a revolution when North Korea invades.

Yes, you read that correctly: North Korea invades! The film gives us some sort of backstory that sets the plot in motion. It is a nationwide takeover predicated on our computer, electrical and infrastructure systems collapsing at the hands of an electronic attack from the country that -- it must be stated -- does have its share of computer terrorist capabilities. So, this isn’t too far on the reality scale.

But, it surely doesn’t pack the same punch as the Russians invading in the first one. There wasn’t a soul alive during the mid-1980’s who didn’t believe that the Soviets could really attack us.

Front and center in our Red Dawn exclusive trailer is proof that the film is not trying to be too rooted in reality. That is not such a bad thing. Where the first film established why the Russians invaded the small town that contained our Wolverines (named after the local high school mascot where everyone attended, except for Swayze’s character), the Red Dawn remake fails to give us any reason why the Washington state community was chosen by North Korea’s high command.

Where Swayze was a soldier home on leave, so too is Hemsworth. He leads the youngsters in a series of guerrilla attacks, sometimes mirroring the exact set-up of the original film. But, this remake is thrilling… don’t get us wrong. The action sequences are some of the best battle scenes seen all year. That’s not necessarily saying much given the breadth of war movies in 2012, but still… Red Dawn rocks.

Red Dawn Cast Photo
Hemsworth gives the performance of his career, which is incredible since the film was shot three years ago. He is just that good. But, even he can’t save Red Dawn from being a slight letdown, given the iconic status of the original.

Theater companies take on plays that have been performed before dozens of times in their history -- so, why not the same standard for motion pictures? Sure, our Red Dawn review admits that the latest Red Dawn is pale compared to the original. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its own merits in the vein of a purely popcorn film.

Rise of the Guardians Review: A Franchise We Want!

$

Jack Frost is quite a character in the animated gem Rise of the Guardians. As envisioned by screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire and director Peter Ramsey, based on William Joyce’s book, he is a lost soul content in making mischief for three centuries before he finds his purpose, and Chris Pine voices him impeccably.

Alec Baldwin and Hugh Jackman in Rise of the Guardians
Joyce presents a world where all the childhood icons not only know each other, but work together to ensure the dreams of youth continue to flourish. The group is known as the Guardians and they are led by North, better known as Santa Claus. Alec Baldwin portrays him as a Russian with a thick accent and two forearm tattoos, one that says “Naughty” and one that says “Nice.” His group is filled out by those highlighted in the Rise of the Guardians featurette: Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and The Sandman (he’s silent, but his actions speak volumes).

Ramsey introduces each one of them, beginning with Frost, as we learn that this muse of winter is the key to the Guardians' latest threat. It seems that Pitch (Jude Law) has emerged from his centuries-long slumber to threaten children’s dreams once again. History knows Law’s evildoer better as The Boogie Man and he's the perfect Rise of the Guardians villain.

The Guardians live and breathe due to the “belief” of children in their existence. Fear is the enemy. Pitch has turned dreams that are spun by Sandman -- enhanced by the Christmas fantasy of a jolly man delivering presents to the world, an Australian bunny who delivers eggs and Easter joy, and a pesky fairy who picks up our teeth under our collective pillows -- into nightmares. Their key to their survival is fading.

Our Rise of the Guardians review is most impressed by the message of the film. Frost is recruited to join the keepers of imagination, albeit unwillingly, and it is because of reasons that fate will decide. The film deals remarkably well in the business of finding oneself and how as that is achieved, we all are uplifted. It is a theme that both parents and children can carry together, long after they leave the theater.

Chris Pine and Isla Fisher Rise of the Guardians
The look of the film, with its 3D palette, is mesmerizing. As Fisher echoed in our Rise of the Guardians cast interview, the movie appears to have been painted by hand. Each stroke of color and landscape is a marvel. Overall, when it comes to holiday movie fare, consider Rise of the Guardians a Christmas family miracle. This is one film that warrants a franchise if there ever was one.

Life of Pi Review: Pure Movie Magic

$
0
0

As he told us in our Ang Lee interview, the filmmaker has certainly tested his cinematic limits by tackling Yann Martel’s global bestseller Life of Pi as his next film. Somehow, by shooting it in 3D, he found a way to film the unfilmable.

Life of Pi Still
Like Cast Away before, the bulk of this film involves a man alone in the middle of nowhere, trying to survive. Only this time, instead of Wilson the volleyball, our title character’s stranded companion on a lifeboat is a vicious tiger. How Pi managed to stay alive with the tiger is the bulk of Lee’s masterpiece. It is not the only storyline, although it's the meat of the story… sorry, didn’t mean to tease that very hungry tiger!

Lee tackles the novel by presenting it from the point of view of a man, who is middle-aged and living in Canada, as he recalls what happened to him as a late teen. He is talking to a writer that met his family while traveling in India. They promised that Pi’s story would make him “believe in God.”

Pi grew up in India as a bright young man with a keen interest in his father’s zoo. They live on the property and, as established in one scene, the young Pi takes a liking to a new tiger. A decade later, when the family comes upon hard economic times, they are forced to sell all of their animals. Pi’s family gathers up their zoo animals like Noah and takes to the high seas to sell them to a North American zoo before settling in Canada.

An mind-blowing sea storm sinks the ship with its only true survivors being Pi and that tiger he was once fascinated by as a small child. It is there that Lee’s cinematic gifts truly get into hyperdrive.

Movie Fanatic believes, that although the filmmaker credits the use of 3D as his muse towards putting together a movie version of Martel’s novel, Lee should not sell himself short. What he achieves with this film, as shown in this Life of Pi featurette, regardless of its dimension, is pure magic.

Life of Pi Suraj Sharma
The balancing of story from man recalling his past -- to what we see -- is handled with grace and it's a brilliant way to bring the book to life. The final act imposes many questions that honestly remain unanswered when the credits appear. Some may have difficulty with that ambiguity, but it is nice occasionally to have our movies not wrapped up in a bow.

His casting of unknown Suraj Sharma is another stroke of providence worth mentioning. As the film presents in various forms, the question of God and fate rears its head repeatedly. None achieved onscreen is greater than the real life discovery of Sharma to play Pi. Like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, the audience spends much of the film alone with this individual. Those who thought lightning in a bottle is what Hanks did in that Robert Zemeckis film, should see Life of Pi to witness how it has struck twice.

Tarantino XX Blu-Ray Review: Better Than a Five Dollar Shake

Quentin Tarantino is celebrating 20 years as a moviemaker by releasing eight of his iconic films in one Blu-Ray package. They had us with the package's cover, a Mondo art drawing of the man himself, wielding a camera.

Tarantino XX Box Set
The Blu-Ray set includes Inglourious Basterds, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2,Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Death Proof.

Having all those movies he directed or simply wrote (True Romance) in one package would be enough for any Tarantino fan. But, as is the case with most retrospective home video releases, the proof of a set’s worth is in the extras pudding. The Tarantino XX collection contains five hours of brand new material as part of a 15-hour special features gift to movie fanatics everywhere.

Two full discs in the 10-disc collection feature some stellar material that even non-Tarantino fans can treasure. As a critic, it’s easy to see our appreciation for the piece Critics Corner: The Films of Quentin Tarantino -- where the filmmaker’s excellence is put into perspective.

The 20 Years of Filmmaking video is just as priceless. It is an in-depth look at the filmmaker from his first feature, Reservoir Dogs, through his most recent Oscar-nominated film -- Inglourious Basterds.

Ridley and his brother Tony Scott are notorious directors for creating Blu-Ray editions of their films that are better than the theatrical (Blade Runner anyone?). As part of the Tarantino XX collection, Tony’s True Romance is presented in its Director’s Cut form. Of particular note, and a surprising one I know, is the audio commentary for the film given by the man who is honored by this entire collection. Tarantino's insight into the film, as the one who didn't direct it… is as unique a take on the creative mind of Tarantino as exists.

Jackie Brown may be one of Tarantino’s must undervalued movies. It’s been gaining more and more attention with the passage of time. The creative team for Jackie Brown reunited at a Los Angeles County Museum of Art event for the film recently and a video crew caught the entire event. The bonus feature on their perspective of that film’s place in history is truly fascinating and proves that sometimes things do get better with age.

Tarantino XX Blu-RayFor those of us chomping at the bit for the next chapter in what is proving to be one brilliant career, don’t miss the entire collection of Django Unchained trailers. Heck, they have to tease you for a genius’ next stroke of brilliance while firmly entranced by the box set of Tarantino triumphs!

Marion Cotillard Shares Oscar Buzz & Rust and Bone

The Dark Knight Risesscene stealer, Marion Cotillard, has done the Oscar buzz dance before when she won in 2008 for La Vie en Rose. Cotillard is back in the Academy Awards buzz bin this year with her searing turn in Rust and Bone. The film is a stunner and to be honest, Cotillard is a shoe-in for a Best Actress nomination. She met Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview recently and talked about how one in the middle of an Oscar firestorm of expectations manages to keep their head about them.

“The awards... you have to enjoy when it’s there. It’s not something that I expect and it doesn’t take me any effort to expect it because it’s not who I am. And it’s easier that way. When it happens though, I’m super happy,” Cotillard admitted. For La Vie en Rose, and Rust and Bone, Oscar buzz brings attention to her film, and for that, she is most grateful.

“I’m really truly happy to share this movie outside of France. I’m proud of the French cinema. That’s what I’m enjoying about it.”

Cotillard, also seen in Christopher Nolan's Inception, also takes us inside the making of the highly emotionally charged movie that follows her character, a Sea World-like whale trainer who after an accident, has to look at her life through a new set of expectation lenses. She meets Matthias Schoenaerts’ Alain van Versch as they find each other and work through their deeply pained emotional landmines.
