John Dies at the End Review: Soy Sauce Insanity

$
0
0

John Dies at the End is one of the most unique movies you will see in recent memory. That doesn't necessarily make it a good thing... but in this case, it absolutely is. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Paul Giamatti portrays a journalist who may just have the story of a lifetime. He meets Dave (Chase Williamson) at a Chinese restaurant to hear his tale and our mind-blowing adventure begins.

John Dies at the End Picture

What is real and what is conjured in the psyche of those inhabiting this film is a blur, and that is one of the many tricks that director Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho Tep) effectively employs to have his audience firmly entrenched in this off-kilter film.

As one can tell from the John Dies at the End trailer, trying to put a finger on this flick is one difficult task. In our John Dies at the End review, Movie Fanatic will refrain from telling too much of the plot and its stylized execution for fear of taking away from the experience. This is one of those movies that the less you know about going in, the better.

What we can tell you is that there is a new drug on the street. Dave's friend John (yes, of the title) calls Dave in a panic as he has just taken the drug, called Soy Sauce, and he isn't quite sure which end is up. Dave races over to his friend's place, only to discover he is dead. Or is he? The phone rings and it's John, but which John? See... trying keeping up with this story is alone an effort that will blow your mind.

Giamatti is a pretty big star to appear in a low budget horror/sci-fi flick and as told to us in our Paul Giamatti exclusive interview, the moment he read the script, he felt that if it was possible to film it -- he had to be involved. Well, Coscarelli has triumphed in bringing his screenplay, based on the book by David Wong, to life in the most extremely astounding ways.

Chase Williamson John Dies at the End

It may go off the rails a bit in the third act, but upon reflection, that could be as planned by the film's helmer. What better way to close out your mind altering film than by having your audience leave the theater asking in joyous unison, "What just happened?!"

John Dies at the End is now out in select theaters and available on Video on Demand.

Star Wars Episode VII Director J.J. Abrams: How Kathleen Kennedy Got him to Do it

Last week's news that J.J. Abrams would direct Star Wars Episode VII came as a shock to many, as the director, who has already taken on the second-biggest sci-fi franchise in Star Trek, seemed pretty adamant that he wasn't interested. So how did LucasFilm Kathleen Kennedy convince him to take the job?

J.J. Abrams

According to an interview withTHR, the pitch basically went like this: "Please do Star Wars." Kennedy was able to settle many of Abrams' biggest concerns; that he wanted to focus on original material instead of taking on another mammoth franchise, and that he didn't want to be away from his family for an extended period of time.

The fact that Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt and Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan were on board didn't hurt either. But above all, Kennedy appealed to Abrams' love of the franchise. "We spent a lot of time talking about how meaningful Star Wars is," she told THR, "and the depth of the mythology that George has created and how we carry that into the next chapter."

Kennedy got the man she was after, though he has not agreed to the original 2015 timetable. Kennedy said they will move as quickly as possible, and focus on getting the story right over hitting a specific release date.

Stand Up Guys Review: Three Men and a Bounty

$

Stand Up Guys is the first time legendary actors Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin, recipient of one of the 2013 Academy Award nominations, have worked together. Is the film itself worth the wait to finally see that talented trio together? Our Stand Up Guys review says, "Undoubtedly yes!"

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken Alan Arkin Stand Up Guys

The brilliance that is teased in the Stand Up Guys trailer actually comes to fruition with the full film. This is a compelling and surprisingly moving tale about three aging gangsters who keenly know they are on the last pages of their life story. As the film commences, Pacino is getting out of jail and Walken stands next to his old -- but classic -- car waiting to drive him away from lockup.

After some oats are sowed, the reality of this situation becomes painfully clear. There was a job, that Pacino went to jail for, that didn't quite go as planned. The head crook does not believe that Pacino's Val kept his mouth shut while in the can, even though he never turned in his partners, much less the boss. So, since Walken's Doc is as much a part of this failed gig, he has been charged with doing the unthinkable, or he will also suffer Pacino's fate.

Arkin comes into the picture when the guys decide to reunite with him and bust him out of the old age home where he is slowly dying of cancer. On the outside, he appears healthy... so when his boys arrive, Arkin's Hirsch is more than ready to party. The chemistry between Pacino and Walken is palpable, but it is when Arkin joins the duo that it becomes a trio of triumph.

The three actors put on a clinic -- all while winking at the audience because they know these are characters that we've seen prior. Each one has played criminals before, but not quite like Hirsch, Val and Doc.

Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin and Al Pacino in Stand Up Guys

For some reason it seems as if seeing Pacino, Walken and Arkin together as gangsters would be a no brainer. Perhaps the many years it took to cast these three together is because fate wanted their first union to be with Noah Haidle's script. His story of redemption, vengeance, forgiveness and brotherly love -- all under the paint strokes of a crime thriller -- resonates powerfully with these three actors at this point in their lives and careers. Honestly, they had us when the Stand Up Guys poster premiered!

The direction of Fisher Stevens is not quite up to the presence his actors give in every frame. This is one of his first efforts, and he is having some growing pains as he expands beyond his acting career. It's just that the pacing is off at times. But, we do have to say, the way Stevens builds up the finale as a blazing guns cry for freedom, is as sizzling of a movie conclusion as one could ask.

Read back through the full list with #100-91, #90-81, #80-71, #70-61, #60-51, #50-41, #40-31, #30-21, and #20-11, then scroll down to view our final list. Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

Top 100 Films of All Time

10. 8 1/2
Frederico Fellini created a masterpiece of 1960’s avante-garde in his black-and-white comedy-drama 8 1/2. The highly-influential film tells the tale of a stalled Italian director struggling with difficulties in his professional and personal life. The dreamy flashback blur the lines between reality and fantasy in the Academy Award-winning movie, which went on to influence filmmakers like Woody Allen, Michel Gondry, David Cronenberg, and Charlie Kauffman.

9. Chinatown
There are movies with twists and there is the legendary twist in Chinatown. The film, from director Roman Polanski, stars Jack Nicholson as an investigator looking into corruption in Depression-era Los Angeles. Nicholson gets more than he bargained for in one of the best mystery movies of all-time. The Academy Award-winning screenplay possesses one of movies’ most famous lines, “Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown.” Intrigued? Check out more Chinatown quotes.

8. The Graduate
The Graduate is brilliant in its understated simplicity. The quiet, beautifully shot film explores the human psyche in a way that few films before or since have been able to match. Themes of seduction, deception, innocence, boredom, and regret are examined by director Mike Nichols, with outstanding performances by a Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, and young Dustin Hoffman and a wonderful soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel. The Graduate received six Oscar nominations after its 1967 release. Read through some The Graduate quotes to see why.

The famous leg shot

7. The Godfather
Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic gangster tale introduced the world to the crime family the Corleones. It’s hard to imagine the film without Marlon Brando, so it’s totally surprising that he had to be begged to do the role. The film swept the Oscars and gave way to a sequel that also swept the Oscars. To this day, it is considered the gangster movie and its pop culture presence is felt from that fateful wedding request to the horse head in the bed. Visit our The Godfather quotes for more on this iconic film.

6. Annie Hall
Woody Allen is surely the most prolific comedic filmmaker in the history of the medium. The frequency with witch he releases films of course leads to some duds, but masterpieces like Annie Hall prove Allen’s brilliance. A sweet, poignant, and absolutely hilarious look at love and relationships, Allen and his co-star Diane Keaton defined the romantic comedy genre from that point on. Annie Hall is easily one of the best comedies ever made, but its unique structure and classic aesthetic make it one of the best films of all time as well. Check out some unforgettable Annie Hall quotes to relive the magic.

5. Apocalypse Now
Coppola has his second film in our top 10 of all time with Apocalypse Now. Few films captured the feel of the Vietnam war as this 1979 film. Again, Coppola turned to Brando and again the veteran actor scored a role of a lifetime. Martin Sheen also established himself as a movie star with his turn as a conflicted soldier trying to solve a mystery. There are too many Apocalypse Now quotes to mention here, but we adore it when Robert Duvall says, “Charlie don’t surf!” and “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

4. 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece was so impeccably made, that even to this day it is at the center of the biggest fake moon landing conspiracy theory. Kubrick’s journey from the dawn of man to the depths of space is perhaps the most visually stunning piece of film ever. Exploring themes of humanity, technology, extraterrestrial life, and the future of human evolution, the ominous story and unforgettable score only serve to further the film’s significance, and solidify Kubrick’s place near the top of the list of the best directors ever. Explore some 2001: A Space Odyssey quotes for more.

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

3. Vertigo
Alfred Hitchcock crafted so many masterpieces, but few have the timeless quality that Vertigo possesses. The master of suspense turned to one of his favorite actors to lead the film in Jimmy Stewart and the performer culled an incredible performance from some pretty intense psychological places. Nobody took human psychological issues and made them suspenseful on screen as Hitchcock did, and if you didn’t have Vertigo before seeing the film… after witnessing its majesty… you will become more susceptible than ever!

2. Taxi Driver
Robert DeNiro proved to moviegoers that he is one of the best actors ever with his role as Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese’s 1976 psychological thriller Taxi Driver. Though Scorsese had made four films before it, Taxi Driver was America’s first major introduction to the director’s distinctive style. Telling the story of a discharged marine-turned taxi driver dealing with insomnia, Taxi Driver explores one man’s struggle with depression and psychosis in the bustling and often-times seedy streets of Manhattan. From the unforgettable “You talking to me?” scene, to the much-discussed ending, Taxi Driver achieved a deeply personal connection to a deeply disturbed man. The film also features wonderful performances from Albert Brooks, Cybill Shepherd and a young Jodie Foster. Check out our Taxi Driver quotes page for more.

1. Casablanca
After profiling 99 other fantastic movies, our number one film of all-time is a completely deserving choice: Casablanca. The film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman continues to compel every new generation that comes along and it is because it is equal parts timeless romance and war drama whose themes could not be more universal, regardless of the era. Also proof of its best film of all-time quality, it does not matter how many times the film is watched, each time the story is laid out by screenwriters Julius and Philip Epstein, the viewer finds new themes that are as relevant today as they were in 1942. For more, check out our Casablanca quotes.

The Muppets…Again!: Producer Todd Lieberman Talks Sequel

Fresh off the news of the announcement of TheMuppets' sequel title and a first Muppets… Again! image, Movie Fanatic spoke with producer Todd Lieberman for his latest, the astounding Warm Bodies, and naturally, we had to get his take on The Muppets sequel announcement. “I can’t wait for people to see it. We’re shooting now,” Lieberman said exclusively.

Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog in The Muppets

The producer has had a wide variety of films carry his producing name, from The Fighter, The Proposal, The Muppets, Warm Bodies and now Muppets…Again!

“I only flew back for the Warm Bodies premiere. [I went] from London to New York to visit my mom for her 70th birthday, then to LA for the premiere,” Lieberman admitted. "Then I’m back to London for more Muppets. All these time zones are taxing on my brain and my body, but I’m thrilled!”

When asked how far into shooting the film that will feature Modern Family star Ty Burrell as the headliner as it was announced that Jason Segel is not involved in The Muppets sequel, Lieberman reported that they are into the heart of it.

“We’re in our second week of shooting,” he said. “It’s gone amazingly well. It’s an unbelievable amount of fun.”

Unlike the re-establishing nature of the first film, the second movie in this new and revitalized Muppet universe will recall The Great Muppet Caper. It involves the Muppet gang as they cross Europe on a triumphant tour until they get drawn into the world of jewel thief Constantine, and his nefarious scheme.

New faces abound beyond Burrell’s Interpol agent, with Ricky Gervais portraying Constantine’s sidekick and Tina Fey as a Russian prison guard.

Lieberman promises that the musical aspect that made Muppet movies famous will still be a huge part of Muppets… Again!, including the return of the man who won an Oscar for the last film.

“We got Bret McKenzie back to do the music! It has tons of new songs, and some old favorites,” Lieberman said. When we spoke to the composer in our Bret McKenzie exclusive interview, he was hoping to be able to return!

Fozzie, Kermit and Miss Piggy in The Muppets

If it appears the producer is pleased with what he’s seen so far, there is no question. “I’m really proud of the group of people we put together to work on this movie. I think that people are going to like it. It’s really fun and the cast that we put together -- we’re thrilled.”

When asked if Christoph Waltz had joined the cast, as rumored, Lieberman simply said, “I can’t say either way.”

Stay with Movie Fanatic for more on The Muppets…Again! and don’t miss my full Warm Bodies interview with Lieberman going live January 31.

Weekend Movie Preview: February 1, 2013

This first Weekend Movie Preview of February has Al Pacino and Christopher Walken as Stand Up Guys, Teresa Palmer falling in love with a zombie in Warm Bodies and Sylvester Stallone putting a Bullet to the Head. So, what should you see this weekend?

Warm Bodies: This romantic fun ride from writer-director Jonathan Levine is one of the most surprising films of this young year. Nicholas Hoult is "R," a zombie seeking more from his life (or death?). While out for a daily feeding on humans, he meets Julie (Teresa Palmer) and he knows his destiny is to save her. What he might not have expected is the two would forge the most unlikely of romances. As we state in our Warm Bodies review, the movie is one enormous treat.

Bullet to the Head: Sylvester Stallone returns to action after two successful The Expendables movies. Unfortunately, his latest is wrong on so many levels, not the least of which it never fully explains its plot. The action sequences are pretty solid and Sly pulls it off, even with his mature age. But, as we state in our Bullet to the Head review, the movie fails to spark any kind of interest in the least.

Stand Up Guys: Al Pacino, Alan Arkin and Christopher Walken are former gangsters who get together when Pacino's character gets out of jail. There's a whole plotline where Pacino has been marked for death that is truly why these three have "gotten back together." The movie cooks, especially when Pacino and Walken share scenes. Their chemistry is electric and we hope that they make more movies together. For more, check out my Stand Up Guys review.

Emily VanCamp has signed on to play the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Emily VanCamp Photo

The character has yet to be disclosed, though speculation is that Sharon Carter will play alongside Steve Rogers. Carter is the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in the first film. Though the character was originally the sister of Peggy, she has since been "retconned" to make sense in a modern continuity (though that timeline is still a bit of a stretch if the Winter Soldier will be set in present-day).

Chris Evans returns in the title role, with Anthony Mackie (Gangster Squad), Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Toby Jones, and Samuel L. Jackson also starring.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has a release date set for April 4, 2014.
