The Independent Spirit Awards, the last trophies awarded this season before the Oscars, were handed out tonight on the beach in Santa Monica. For those who received Academy Award nominations, this was the final awards show before they find out if the title "Oscar winner" is suddenly attached to their name. The clear winner of this year's Spirit Awards was Silver Linings Playbook.

Silver Linings Playbook Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper

Not only did David O. Russell win for his direction and screenplay, but Silver Linings Playbook took home best feature and Jennifer Lawrence won for Lead Actress in a Film. As we reported in our Academy Awards predictions, Lawrence is the favorite to win the title at the Academy Awards Sunday night. This victory only enhances that fact.

Essentially ignored by the Oscars, The Sessions scored big as well winning acting awards for Best Female Lead Helen Hunt and Best Male Lead John Hawkes.

One of the highlights of the evening for Movie Fanatic was the victory of Matthew McConaughey for Magic Mike. He had one of the best years of anyone, yet has failed to earn any honors thus far in awards season. His turn in Magic Mike was astounding and we're thrilled that someone noticed.

Movie Fanatic brings you the Academy Awards as it happens, with commentary, analysis and some exclusive insight that those ABC cameras won't bring you. Since those Academy Awards nominations were announced, this was the moment we've been waiting for.

From the opening monologue of host Seth MacFarlane to the announcement of the Oscar for Best Picture... we chronicle the 85th Academy Awards as no other.

Seth MacFarlane Hosts Oscars

The nominees and presenters have walked the red carpet and are settled into the Dolby Theater. Without further ado... we bring you the 2013 Academy Awards!

8:30 p.m. The show opens with Seth MacFarlane taking the stage. What's he going to do? "The mission to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh starts now!" Then, he laughed! MacFarlane has already succeeded. Love his picking on Jean Dujardin!

Although MacFarlane is no stand-up comic, he's nailing it in that effort. His joke on Chris Brown and Rihanna struck a chord.

Things were going well and then William Shatner shows up! Will he call MacFarlane a pig like in our interview?! No, but he brought a "clip" with him from the "future" where MacFarlane supposedly ruined the night. We Saw Your Boobs is classic MacFarlane.

Then, MacFarlane launched into song with Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum. The Way You Look Tonight with Tatum and Theron dancing. Nice touch, MacFarlane.

Shatner appeared once again to show a clip from what could have been... a sock puppet rendition of Flight. It was pretty fun, but still Shatner cautioned it was not good.

Joseph Gordon Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe took the stage and joined MacFarlane for a song and dance version of High Hopes.

The bit with Sally Field might have sounded good on paper, but we weren't the hugest fan.

Yet, MacFarlane redeemed himself with a rousing Oscar-themed version of Be Our Guest. Complete with closing headline: Best Oscar Host Ever, says everyone but Entertainment Weekly.

8:46 p.m. Octavia Spencer (last year's winner for The Help) takes the stage to announce Best Supporting Actor. And the Oscar goes to...Christoph Waltz! Our first upset of the night is from our first award! Honestly, the man deserved it. He was astounding in Django Unchained. We just never thought it could happen. Keep surprising us Oscars!

Christoph Waltz Oscars

8:55 p.m. Paul Rudd and Melissa McCarthy hit the stage. These two are a funny twosome! Who are your favorite comedy duos? They are in fact there to present Best Animated Short Film. The winner is Disney's Paperman. Such a wonderful movie that appeared before Wreck-It Ralph. Want to see it yourself? Check out the Paperman full movie!

9:00 p.m. The comic duo then announce the winner for Best Animated Feature. Surprise... it's Brave! Disney goes two-for-two!

9:01 p.m. America's sweetheart Reese Witherspoon takes the stage, looking classic Hollywood stunning. She is introducing the Best Picture nominee Les Miserables. She's there to also introduce Life of Pi and Beasts of the Southern Wild. This is new, perhaps a time saver to introduce more than one movie at once?

9:03 p.m. MacFarlane cracks jokes based on Beasts of the Southern Wild lead actress and her young age. He's on tonight, there is no question. Then he introduces five of The Avengers! Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. They are there to present Achievement in Cinematography. And the winner is... Life of Pi. Good call Academy. One gorgeous film. The superhero gang continues by awarding Best Visual Effects. The Oscar goes to...Life of Pi.

Suraj Sharma Life of Pi

9:15 p.m. MacFarlane introduces Jennifer Aniston and Channing Tatum. The pair are hitting the Dolby Theatre with a few behind-the-scenes awards -- makeup and hairstyling awards! First up, the costume designers are tributed. Love the joke about waxing Channing! Too true, too true. This year's Best Costume Designer worked on... Anna Karenina. Called it! And then it's time for Best Makeup and Hairstyling... who wins? Why it's Les Miserables. Two for two here!

9:22 p.m. Halle Berry takes the stage... is it time for our Bond tribute?! Yeah! The James Bond movies have always been our favorite. That theme song is so iconic, my goodness. Amazing how they have effectively shown the most incredible sights and sounds of 50 years in a few short minutes. One of the better Oscar tributes in some time.

007 Logo

Surprise! Shirley Bassey takes the stage to sing Goldfinger. Has she still got it or what? Simply awesome.

9:30 p.m. Oscar winner Jamie Foxx and fellow Django Unchained star Kerry Washington now walk up to the microphone. They're presenting Live Action Short Film. The winner is Curfew. Best Documentary Short Feature is up next. Inocente wins! Movie Fanatic is two for two in these hard-to-predict categories!

9:35 p.m. Liam Neeson comes out, but not before MacFarlane gets in a too obvious Harvey Weinstein joke. Neeson is there to introduce the next few Oscar Best Picture nominees: Argo, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty. Our winner is among those three... mark my words.

9:43 p.m. Ben Affleck takes the stage to introduce the Best Documentary Feature. And the Oscar goes to... Searching for Sugarman. Movie Fanatic knew that the Academy would go for this charming and powerful piece!

9:48 p.m. What a pair! Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Garner arrive to present Best Foreign Language Film. No surprise here... the winner is Amour. Want more about this charming film? Check out our Amour quotes.

9:53 p.m. MacFarlane salutes the Oscar orchestra... which isn't playing there, but at the Capital Records building? Wow... who knew?

9:54 p.m. John Travolta hits the stage to tribute movie musicals. Les Miserables' Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway are announced to perform. Also to perform, songs from Chicago and Dreamgirls.

First up is Catherine Zeta Jones singing one of our favorites, All That Jazz from Chicago!

Next up is the Academy Award-winning Dreamgirls and let's hope Jennifer Hudson is singing that song. Bingo! Man, And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going is just as powerful as when she sang it in the movie.

Anne Hathaway Hugh Jackman Les Miserables

Lastly, Oscar pays tribute to this year's musical movie nominee... Les Miserables. Fantastic job of melding all the powerful songs from this astounding musical.

10:08 p.m. Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana take the stage to salute awards given to tech people, presented earlier this month.

10:10 p.m. Seth MacFarlane salutes all the good movies made this year. Then, being great at self-deprecating humor, he introduces the stars of his film, Ted, Mark Wahlberg and the title character. The two prove why their chemistry produced a movie that made a lot of loot! We finally find out why they're there... to present Best Sound Mixing. And the Oscar goes to Les Miserables.

Best Sound Editing is next... and the Oscar goes to: It's a tie! Wow, this never happens! First winner is Zero Dark Thirty. The film that tied it is... Skyfall. Nice to see a Bond movie win for something other than Best Song... which they will win later!

10:18 p.m. Christopher Plummer is about to be introduced... love the Sound of Music joke! Uncanny! Finally, he does hit the stage. The winner for Best Supporting Actor last year for Beginners is here to present this year's Best Supporting Actress. Love you Sally Field, but no surprise here... the winner is Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables.

Anne Hathaway Oscars

10:28 p.m. MacFarlane introduces the Academy President. This year's Oscar escorts are filmmakers of the future. Nice to know!

10:30 p.m. Sandra Bullock is introduced. Why is she there? To present the Oscar for Achievement in Film Editing! This is a huge indicator as to who will win Best Picture. Dozens of winners of this category have gone on to win Best Picture. And the Oscar for Achievement in Film Editing goes to: Argo.

10:33 p.m. Jennifer Lawrence takes the stage to introduce Adele singing Skyfall!

Adele Skyfall Photo

10:44 p.m. Nicole Kidman lands on the Dolby Theatre stage to introduce the next several Best Picture nominees: Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained and Amour.

10:47 p.m. Daniel Radcliffe and Kristen Stewart arrive to present the award for Best Production Design. Seeing Harry Potter and Bella from the Twilight Saga is an impressive combination. The winner is Lincoln and deservedly so, as the team behind the film impeccably captured the feel of that period as no other.

10:55 p.m. Salma Hayek salutes the Humanitarian Awards.

10:57 p.m. One of Hollywood's favorite people, George Clooney, introduces the In Memoriam section of the show. Barbra Streisand makes a rare appearance to salute her friend Marvin Hamlisch with The Way We Were.

11:07 p.m. Chicago stars Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellweger and Queen Latifah take the stage. Wow. Simply, wow! The superstars are there to present Best Score. And the winner is... Life of Pi. We called it!

11:11 p.m. It's time for Best Original Song! Will Bond win? We find out after Norah Jones sings us a little Ted track. And the Oscar goes to... Skyfall by Adele.

11:23 p.m. Charlize Theron and Dustin Hoffman, an interesting pairing, arrive to present the screenplay awards. First up, is Best Adapted Screenplay. The winner is... Argo. Honestly, I think this is a crime. Tony Kushner's script for Lincoln is nothing short of a miracle. And now it's time for Best Original Screenplay. Will Quentin Tarantino win? The Oscar goes to... Tarantino!! This QT fan could not be more excited.

11:33 p.m. MacFarlane introduces Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas... good point Seth, children of superstars who are superstars themselves. The legends are here to present Best Director. No Spielberg! It's Ang Lee for Life of Pi.

Ang Lee Academy Awards

11:40 p.m. Last year's Best Actor winner Jean Dujardin is set to award this year's Best Actress. And the Oscar goes to... Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook.

11:45 p.m. Meryl Streep arrives as MacFarlane says she needs no introduction. Too true. So, who's our Best Actor? Hard to predict this year... not! Streep must have agreed as she wasted no time announcing Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln.

11:51 p.m. Jack's here! They brought out the big guns for Best Picture, baby! After all this... who is going to win? Big surprise... he introduces First Lady Michelle Obama! What a treat. And the big winner is... Argo. Not really a surprise at this point, but still nice to see Ben Affleck up there clutching his golden statue.

11:55 p.m. MacFarlane greets the crowd one final time before signing off for the night. But first, Kristin Chenoweth and MacFarlane sing a salute to the losers.

Quentin Tarantino Talks Django Unchained Oscar Win

$

Moments after Quentin Tarantino won his second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, he talked about the experience backstage with the Hollywood press. "I make my movies for Earth," he said. Wait, what? Read on!

Quentin Tarantino Academy Awards

Tarantino sees himself as an international filmmaker. Audiences can appreciate his films, regardless of borders. “The way I look at it is, I'm not an American filmmaker. I'm an American and I'm a filmmaker. But I make movies for the planet Earth. And I have since the very beginning with Reservoir Dogs,” Tarantino said.

“I went all around the planet Earth, pretty much, for a whole year promoting it and doing all that, and I've been doing that ever since. And so, to me, America is just another market.”

Given the "backlash" that had surrounded his written word and its power teased in the Django Unchained trailer, winning Best Original Screenplay is just slight validation.

“I have to say, all that criticism that came out, it ended up being kind of a good thing. One of the things that I wanted to do is I wanted to actually start a conversation about slavery, about America's role in it, and to actually take an audience member from the 21st century and stick them in the antebellum South and see whether they would have a sense of what America was like back then,” Tarantino said.

“And so even the people that have criticized the movie, and a lot of people don't like it and I can understand that, but a lot of people do like it, and they have been kind of going back and forth. And that back and forth is really what I really wanted for the end of the day of this movie and I hope that actually even continues for the next few years.”

Since Tarantino was in a reflective mood after becoming one of the night's big Oscar winners, he was then asked since the 2013 Academy Awards gold rush was split among some astoundingly good pictures this year, will it produce more thought-provoking fare in the future?

Quentin Tarantino Django Unchained Wallpaper

“I've been thinking about that a lot lately. I go into my own little film study from time to time, especially during crazy moments like this to kind of put it out of my brain. And one of the things I've been doing is I've been doing a lot of study on the films made in the early '70s, in particular. That was the beginning of what they called 'new Hollywood.' I have to say, I wasn't thinking about us. I was just doing that study for my own edification,” Tarantino said.

But Tarantino wound up seeing some congruency between that iconic film era and the nine films nominated for Best Picture in 2013.

“I recognized the spirit that was going on then with the nine nominees now, and even backed by some commercial success. There's nothing about the subjects in a lot of these movies that would suggest they would be commercial or be popular, and then they have been! I actually think an adult audience is kind of rising up. I mean, the fact that we are actually not making every movie for teenagers is kind of a cool thing, especially now that I am not a teenager anymore!”

Disney and Marvel are really pushing the idea that something bad happens to Tony Stark with this new Pepper Potts character poster for Iron Man 3. My guess is he turns out to be okay, and Potts' sadness turns to relief. There's still an Avengers 2 to come, after all.

Robert Downey, Jr. returns to don the Iron Man Suit in the first film of Marvel's phase 2. This time, Star's personal world is attacked, sending him on a search for revenge.

Ben Affleck Reveals Oscar Snub a "Crime"

$

Ben Affleck was the picture of bliss when he came backstage at the Academy Awards to talk to the press, fresh off of being one of the Oscar winners with his Best Picture victory for Argo.

Ben Affleck Jack Nicholson Academy Awards

Although Affleck has been quite diplomatic in terms of his Best Director nomination snub thus far during awards season, backstage, with Oscar firmly in hand, he addressed the issue a little more head on. “That's a crime, folks. Honestly, you know how I feel about that? Naturally I was disappointed, and a lot of people said that this is something that's going to happen," Affleck admitted.

Yet, he said, when you think about the helmers who made great films this year that also were not honored, Affleck felt less alone.

"When I look at the directors who weren't nominated as well -- Paul Thomas Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, Tom Hooper and Quentin Tarantino -- these are all directors who I admire enormously. It was a very tough year,” Affleck said. “I was on the bench. You're not entitled to anything. I'm honored to be here. I'm honored to be among these extraordinary movies, and I'm really, really honored to win an Academy Award."

An added bonus for the newly minted Oscar winner was the involvement of First Lady Michelle Obama in awarding the statue.

Ben Affleck Academy Awards

“I was sort of hallucinating when that was happening. In the course of hallucination, it doesn't seem that odd. Look, it's Michelle Obama! But that was a natural feeling, because the whole thing is so unnatural,” Affleck said.

“Honestly, I was just asking these two guys outside, was that Michelle Obama? [Laughs] The whole thing kind of alarmed me at the time, but in retrospect, the fact that it was the First Lady was an enormous honor and the fact that she surrounded herself by service men and women was special and I thought appropriate."

As shown in the Argo trailer, the story centers on the selfless act of a CIA agent who orchestrated a fake movie -- with Hollywood's help -- in order to free six Americans who escaped the U.S. Embassy takeover in Tehran. Making the true life tale, Affleck garnered an affection for those who work tirelessly, and often anonymously, for the rest of us in America.

“All of us, a tremendous respect for what the Foreign Service sacrifices and goes through and that we, I think, gained further appreciation for that as we shot the movie and visited the State Department,” Affleck said.

Ben Affleck Directs Argo

“I know Secretary Clinton a little bit and Secretary Kerry a little bit better. I've really picked up an appreciation for what the State Department does, what our Foreign Service does, what they sacrifice."

Before letting him go, we asked about his thoughts on increasing the tension in Argo fictitiously. “I think that it's tricky. You walk a fine line. You do a historical movie -- naturally you have to make some creative choices about how you're going to condense it into a three act structure. It's not an easy thing to do. You try to honor the truth of the essence, the sort of basic truth of the story that you're telling,” Affleck said.

“I'm really proud of the movie, I'm proud of the people that worked on the movie. The story that we were telling was true and that we told was true.”

Best in Show Blu-Ray Review: Going to the Dogs

$

It's hard to believe, but the instant classic Best in Show has yet to arrive on Blu-Ray. Thanks to Warner Bros., the film has finally landed with the highest definition picture and sound known to exist. Beyond stellar Best in Show quotes, the film serves as what is probably the last real great Christopher Guest movie and arguably the one he has been chasing success-wise ever since it premiered in 2000.

Best in Show Blu-Ray

The world of dog shows is ripe for the lampooning and Guest and his troupe of merry men and women rose to the challenge. Above all else, the Blu-Ray debut of the film is a chance to rediscover a gem in the comedy world. The cast of characters is well thought out and shines a light on the unique universe that is the world of dog shows.

Best in Show follows the merry adventures of several dog owners and their journey to be crowned top dog at the Mayflower Dog Show. The cast brings their A-game, particularly Parker Posey, Glee star Jane Lynch and Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara as a married couple with dreams of canine glory. And don't get us started on the dry humor exuded by creator and star Guest. Particularly funny is his bit about all the different kind of nuts out there!

The Best in Show Blu-Ray features deleted scenes that have never seen the light of day, which are hysterical and show how improv-savvy this comedic troupe is. The commentary by the film's co-creators Levy and Guest is especially interesting with the passage of time and their reflections on making one of the great comedies of our era.

That is unfortunately it in terms of extras; we wish there had been more... perhaps a blooper reel? But, in the end, Best in Show is a must own for any comedy fan and if you don't already have the DVD, now is the time to pick up the Blu-Ray and cherish Guest's humor forever.

Want further proof of this film's comedic excellence? Check out this clip of Coolidge... and you know much of this was ad-libbed!

Unbroken: Angelina Jolie Hires Coen Brothers For Script

After her 2011 directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey, actress Angelina Jolie is now beginning work on the adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's non-fiction bestseller, Unbroken.

With such a substantial adaptation on her hands, Jolie has turned to two of Hollywood's biggest screenwriters: Joel and Ethan Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis).

The Coen Brothers

The film will tell the story of Louis Zamperini, a WWII pilot whose plane crashed at sea. After being adrift for 47 days, Zamperini and two crewmates are captured into a Japanese POW camp.

Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence was previously attached to direct, with versions of the script being written Richard LaGravenese (Beautiful Creatures), among others. With Jolie taking over, she likely intends to have the Coen Brothers start from scratch.

The pair are of course well known for such films as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men. HEad to our Big Lebowski quotes page for more.

The DVD and Blu-Ray for Breaking Dawn Part 2 has landed and the final chapter of the Twilight Saga concludes in a quite satisfying manner. It is the best of the series and fans will absolutely want to add the flick to their Edward and Bella home video bounty.

Breaking Dawn Part 2 Blu-Ray Cover

As Stephenie Meyer oversaw the closing of her series, the biggest news to come out of her final film in the vampire and the girl who loves him world was that twist of the ending. As we reported in our Breaking Dawn Part 2 review, it surprisingly works!

For those of you who haven't seen or heard of it, that's all we'll say on the subject. But, that final stroke of creativity spoke to Movie Fanatic and showed why, in that moment, millions and millions adore the series.

The team behind the franchise has compiled a DVD and Blu-Ray that should satisfy every single fan in ways they only dreamed of. The seven-part documentary series that takes viewers behind the scenes of the final film is astounding. From director Bill Condon to the entire cast -- with special and heartwarming input by its stars Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson -- the insight of making these final two movies back-to-back is captured impeccably.

Check out a tease of a behind-the-scenes feature:

And the man who brought those final two chapters, Condon, provides an especially insightful commentary track for those who want to delve even further into the making of one of the most popular franchises in Hollywood history.

Recalling the days when it was actually a competition and the Twilight world was split between Team Jacob and Team Edward, there's a true treat of a bonus feature. The "Jump to Edward" or "Jump to Jacob" feature allows you to solely watch the film with that character's scenes. That's a new one in the world of home video... and fitting for this franchise!

Shane Black directs the film, which premieres (Iron) May 3 (I will make that a thing!). Watch the Iron Man 3 Super Bowl trailer for more.
