The Sweeney Review: London's Finest

$

0

The Sweeney is one fantastic ride at the movies, unlike any we've seen yet this year. Yes, the calendar has barely turned from 2012, but I would bet you won't see a film as riveting and riotous as The Sweeney until the summer hits.

The Cast of The Sweeney

Our The Sweeney review has to start and end with the lead, Ray Winstone.

As teased in The Sweeney trailer, the film is based on the popular British TV series that has become a full length completely riveting feature. Winstone stars as the leader in an elite London police force -- called The Sweeney -- that in their debut film is charged with stopping a crew who are successfully pulling off high profile heists across the English capital.

To quote Winstone's character what sets The Sweeney apart from other police units is they are willing to do things to get the crooks that other cops cannot. Check out the team in The Sweeney poster and witness this force's fierceness!

Yet, there is oversight in the form of Steven Macintosh's Internal Affairs officer who seeks to shut down the crew. He sees their success coming at a cost to civil liberties. To make matters worse, Winstone is sleeping with his wife!

Needless to say, the battle between Macintosh and Winstone is as powerful as the war the police officer is waging against the heist crew.

Damian Lewis The Sweeney

Winstone rolls through every scene as Jack Regan with an insane amount of confidence that may feel like cockiness. But it's not. He is the absolute best at what he does and that bleeds through every scene. It is as explosive of a performance as he has ever given.

The Sweeney is a slick, action-packed thriller that doesn't forget to have some fun along the way. Movie Fanatic has heard that the film, already a blockbuster in Britain, has already had its sequel green lit. We cannot wait to continue the adventures of London's finest and most effective police unit. And if there was a better role for Winstone in his career, we sincerely doubt it.

Weekend Movie Preview: March 1, 2013

The first weekend movie preview of March is like the month itself, it has come in like a lion. Two films debut that are already being touted as the best of the year, Stoker and The Sweeney. Yet, both are opening in a smaller number of theaters than the two other fun films that are sure to wow audiences: Jack the Giant Slayer and 21 and Over.

Jack the Giant Slayer: Nicholas Hoult continues his hit streak after his turn in Warm Bodies, portraying the title character in Jack the Giant Slayer. Any resemblance to the iconic fairy tale is small, as this is far more vast and thrilling than that little beanstalk story could ever be. The cast is impressive, with Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci taking turns stealing scenes. The effects are incredible, the story riveting and, as we state in our Jack the Giant Slayer review, it's fun for all.

21 and Over: The writers of The Hangover present another party where slosh-ness gets our characters in trouble. This time out the laughs aren't quite as funny, but the three leads do the best they can with the material given. The standout here is Miles Teller who shows a level of comic timing that we never knew he had in him. As reported in our 21 and Over review, if college drunkenness as humor is your cup of Long Island iced tea, then you'll love this film.

Stoker: In what we are already calling the best movie of the year (so far), Nicole Kidman stars as the matriarch of the Stoker family. They are kin who show little love, and tragedy seems to follow their every move. The film is beautifully shot, thrilling and Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska puts on a clinic. As we said in our Stoker review, if this film had come out later in the year, it would jump to the front of the Oscar line.

The Sweeney: If English crime dramas are something you enjoy, then you would be hard pressed to find one better in recent memory than The Sweeney. Based on the hit TV series about an elite London police team, Ray Winstone stars as their leader and his power is felt throughout. Damian Lewis (Homeland) is featured as his boss, someone who supports, yet still keeps a keen eye on Winstone's crew. Our The Sweeney review goes further into this masterwork of English cinema.

Jason Bateman is showing up all over the place lately. In addition to reprising his role as Michael Bluth in the new Netflix-only episodes of Arrested Development, Bateman has recently appeared in such films as Horrible Bosses, The Change-Up, Hit and Run, Identity Thief, and the upcoming film Disconnect.

Now, he will star in This is Where I Leave You, an adaptation of the book by Jonathan Tropper. And who will be joining as Bateman's sister? None other than the endlessly-hilarious Tina Fey.

Funny Tina Fey

Fey wrote and starred in the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls, and has appeared in other recent films including Date Night, Baby Mama, Megamind, and the upcoming films Admission and The Muppets...Again.

The film follows a distant family who are brought together by the last wish of their dead patriarch: that they all spend a week together in the same house.

The Last Exorcism Part II: Ashley Bell on Fighting the Devil

The Last Exorcism Part II star Ashley Bell phoned Movie Fanatic from the Portland, Oregon Comic-Con, her first of any kind. “It’s crazy. I’m having a blast,” she proudly stated. Bell was there talking to the fans as her The Last Exorcism Part II is set to premiere in theaters. “I’m seeing so many good costumes -- even a woman who is just naked! That’s probably a bit too much.”

Ashley Bell The Last Exorcism Part II

In the sequel to 2010’s The Last Exorcism, we meet her character Nell who is trying to put together the pieces of her life after the devil almost destroyed everything she knows. Bell is thrilled for audiences to go on that Nell-centric thrill ride once again.

“I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and I scared myself," she said and laughed. “I went with a bunch of people who hadn’t even read the script and in the first 20 minutes they were jumping into each other’s arms! That’s the great thing about making a part two is that the audience is vulnerable to be preyed on.”

Although it appears as if the scares are too much for even teens from The Exorcism Part II trailer, Bell admitted that the film is the rare horror movie that is not an "R." "It’s PG-13 and it’s a fun, scary movie."

When tackling a sequel, regardless of the genre, Bell stated that it is important to not forget what made audiences fall for the characters in the first place.

“It’s always just about being true to the character. When I got the call that a Part II was happening, it was so thrilling that we were continuing Nell’s story. I couldn’t believe it,” Bell said.

“I was excited to see where Nell would be even mentally after the first one. She was broken. In putting together the pieces of Nell, it was also what was missing. It was in those missing pieces where she began to question background and religious faith. That’s when the devil creeps in and there’s temptation.”

Appearing in a horror film, much less a sequel -- is a true dream for the actress.

“I am a huge horror fan. Growing up, I remember watching horror movies with my dad which led to an incredibly overactive imagination. To this day, I’m still scared of the dark,” Bell said and laughed. “We would watch Poltergeist, Pumpkinhead and Alien. To get the chance to be part of one myself, it was really exciting.”

Does she have a favorite? “Pumpkinhead! But I do love Alien -- love the Ridley character. I recently watched it again and it scared me so much,” Bell said.

The Last Exorcism Part II Ashley Bell

Even in tough times, horror movies still tend to do well at the box office and Bell believes that has much to do with the joy of collective scares. “There’s nothing like that thrill of going to a horror movie and getting scared to death,” she said.

“For Part I, Eli Roth (producer), took us around LA and we’d watch people being scared watching the movie. It’s almost like you’re going on a ride being in the audience of a horror movie.”

Now that she’s back in the role of Nell, we wondered what it was that she likes most about the character now that she’s played her twice. “I like her fashion sense,” Bell said and laughed.

“There’s so much of her that I love. Even though she’s sheltered and vulnerable, she still has a strength to her, despite everything that is going on. She has a hope and believes that everything is going to be OK, literally in the face of the devil.”

Top 10 Revenge Movies: Stories Best Served Cold

$

As a stellar revenge flick storms into theaters, Dead Man Down, Movie Fanatic is looking back. We're naming our favorite revenge movies in recent memory. It's a tricky thing capturing retribution on film. Solid cinematic payback has to play out slowly over the course of the film until that fateful confrontation that has the audience cheering.

As teased in the Dead Man Down trailer, the Colin Farrell-starring film does it right. In fact, that film may even be on our list! Without further ado... here's the Movie Fanatic Top 10 Revenge Movies.

10. Taken
What makes a successful score-settling story so powerful is when the protagonist has a "special set of skills" that makes whoever's in his bullseye wish they'd never gotten out of bed before committing the horrible act. When Liam Neeson's daughter is kidnapped, the former CIA agent swings into action and makes everyone pay, like, everyone... We think even a few people who didn't have that much to do with the actual kidnapping, got a little hurt. Check out our Taken quotes for more Neeson bad-assery.

Liam Neeson in Taken

9. Dead Man Down
What struck us so much about the Colin Farrell-Noomi Rapace-starring revenge flick is how its strike-back comes at the audience on two fronts. Both Farrell and Rapace portray people who are forever altered by extremely violent situations. They have lived for revenge, but over the course of meeting and getting to know each other... their taste for it only grows more complicated. See what we mean when it arrives in theaters March 8.

8. Carrie
For every high school kid that has been picked on, Stephen King made their most out-there fantasies a reality when his book Carrie landed in the 1970s. An outstanding version hit the big screen, courtesy of director Brian De Palma several years later. That prom scene with Sissy Spacek covered in blood has become synonymous with cinematic "gotcha back."It is such a powerful story that it is the rare remake that is warranted. Check out this haunting vision teased in the new Carrie trailer.

7. V for Vendetta
V for Vendetta, it's easy to see, is based on a graphic novel. It has a vast scope that is part of its vengeful charm. This is a political redemption that affects the will of an entire people. Natalie Portman showed a side of herself that had only been seen in The Professional. She is searing, as is Hugo Weaving... another who plays a huge rule in the execution of the title. For more, don't miss our V for Vendetta quotes.

Hugo Weaving V for Vendetta

6. True Grit
Hailee Steinfeld is so good (she earned an Oscar nod) in this film that the actress projects power that is decades beyond her years. Steinfeld plays a daughter in search of justice for the man who killed her father. The film from the Coen brothers showed that it doesn't matter one's age, location, era or means... when justice drives you, there is virtually nothing that can stand in your way.

5.Gladiator
See there is nothing that gets a person raging down the vengeance road like the harming of someone's family member or members. Look at Taken, Dead Man Down and True Grit that came before -- and quite a few that are still to come on our countdown. Russell Crowe is a broken man motivated by the desire to extol justice on the army he once fought with, who made the mistake of killing his wife and child.

As a slave, he returns to Rome, becomes a huge Gladiator star... and when Joaquin Phoenix finally sees the revenge coming his way it's too late to stop it. In that pivotal scene, so many thousands of people are cheering in the arena onscreen, it reflects the will of the audience in the movie theater. "I only have one more life to take," Crowe says. It is powerful to say the least. That's just one of the riveting Gladiator quotes!

4. Cape Fear
Having a bad lawyer when fighting a traffic citation is one thing. If he is representing you in a trial that could send you to jail for decades, one might build up just a little grudge. Such is the case with a menacing Robert De Niro and his laser beam focus when he gets out of prison to single-handedly ruining his former lawyer (Nick Nolte) and his entire world. Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear is payback at its most frightening. It is not only one of the Top 10 Remakes of All-Time, but one of the best revenge flicks as well.

Robert De Niro in Cape Fear

3. The Professional
Some have called this movie Leon after the main character, but it was introduced to me as The Professional and that is how I'll always remember it -- especially because of the power in the characterization of the title character by Jean Reno. His hitman is beyond ruffling, yet when a young girl enters his life when her family is assassinated, he finds his heart. And one-by-one, he and Portman head out into the city and get retribution for her family's demise.

2. Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2
Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to the plot method of revenge. It inhabits at least some part, if not all, of his movies. Just look at Django Unchained. But, his sword of redemption is never sharper as it is in the Kill Bill movies. Uma Thurman's The Bride and her reasoning for her quest to avenge the death of her child and being left for dead herself is so methodically laid out by Tarantino, it is a gale force wind of wickedness. No one should ever want to be on that list she had that ends with the words, "Kill Bill."

1. Memento
Memento lands at number one for several reasons. It is the best use of storytelling in a revenge tale. Since the film moves in reverse, the challenge for filmmaker Christopher Nolan is to create that passion for the main character for the audience, all while unpacking the pieces to a puzzle that in a sense, were already put together.

Guy Pearce in Memento

Guy Pearce rivets and his memory loss only further enhances the taste for revenge that the viewer experiences while watching it play out through Pearce. These Memento quotes only tease the terrific-ness that is Nolan's film announcement of his arrival.

Honorable mentions: Death Wish, Commando, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Crow, The Unforgiven, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Munich and Straw Dogs (1971).

Sam Mendes has sent us on a rollercoaster of emotion over his involvement with Bond 24. After first claiming he wouldn't return to direct, because of the plan to make the new installment a two-part film, that plan was subsequently scrapped and his likeliness of return was then placed at 75%.

Now, Mendes has confirmed toEmpire that he will in fact not direct.

“It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie," Mendes said. Ultimately, the director cited theater commitments and other personal commitments as his reason for declining.

Skyfall was the highest-grossing Bond film ever, currently sitting at seventh all-time on the worldwide box office. Daniel Craig took on the role of 007 for the third time, and is confirmed to be returning for the next film. Javier Bardem, Berenice Marlohe, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, and Ben Whishaw (Cloud Atlas) also starred.

Oz The Great and Powerful: Sam Raimi Talks Evil Dead Similarities

$
0
0

Believe it or not, fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series will find much to appreciate in his latest film, teased in the Oz: The Great and Powerful trailer -- besides it being a powerful epic. Proof of that is seen best in a scene when Bruce Campbell is hit in the head repeatedly with a wooden stick. Sounds like a scene from Raimi's early work, no?

Sam Raimi James Franco Oz The Great and Powerful

"It's always good to hit Bruce (Campbell) when you can. But yes, there are some similarities with the Army of Darkness movie, the third in the Evil Dead series, and this picture," Raimi said.

"Bruce Campbell plays a character that comes from another time back into 1300 AD and into medieval times. There they think he is one of their enemies and that a plague has come upon the land. He eventually becomes a leader of those people, so that much is similar with James's (Franco) character. He comes from another place and time, another reality and eventually comes to lead those people. It's very similar."

One of the reasons Raimi took on the potentially thankless job of filming a prequel to one of our Top 100 Movies of All-Time, The Wizard of Oz, was that that 1939 classic left him asking the question: Where did the wizard come from?

"I never understood the wizard in the first one," Raimi admitted. "How did he ever get in that situation?"

Oz: The Great and Powerful stars Franco as Oz, a man who is a simple circus magician. When he flirts with the wrong woman, he lands in a hot air balloon and courtesy of a tornado, winds up in the magical land that ironically, and perhaps fatefully, carries his name. Raimi felt that because of those unanswered questions about the titular wizard from the first film, plus the fact that there is plenty of material on Oz, pre-Emerald City, all found in the story creator's books, that a prequel was warranted and needed.

"This movie is based on the works of the great American author L. Frank Baum. All the things you see in our picture, almost all of them, were written about around 110 years ago. So he had the ideas in these stories," Raimi said. "We decided to tell a particular part of what was written in those books, how the wizard got to the land of Oz, who he was and what became of him."

What he created is an all-out spectacle (check back for our review) that reunited him with Franco after they made three Spider-Man movies together.

"Working with James Franco was great and yes, we developed a shorthand over those three Spider-Man movies that we were able to work on together. We learned to trust each other more and more as the years went on, but still it was an absolutely brand new experience working with him as the lead in this picture. I really get into the heads of my lead heroes and work very, very closely with them," Raimi said.

Mila Kunis James Franco Oz: The Great and Powerful

It was a different experience because of Franco's character trying to kill his Spider-Man character, and as he said, he's protective of his heroes. "I never connected with him as much as I do with like Tobey Maguire. Now, I was taking this journey through his eyes and we got to be very close and share a lot of intimate thoughts. I had a wonderful experience working with James on this."

Since Franco wasn't the original actor pursued for the part, it shows what the Rolling Stones iconically sang, You Can't Always Get What You Want (But If You Try Sometime, You Find You Get What You Need). "Originally when I joined the project, Robert Downey, Jr. was attached to play the role, and I met with him about it twice and I don't think he felt the picture was right for him. And then I talked with Johnny Depp briefly. About 48 hours he was thinking about it. He decided it wasn't right for him either," Raimi recalled.

"Then I heard James was interested and I had never thought of James. But, then I began to think about what I knew about James and the rest is history."

Oz the Great and Powerful: Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams & Rachel Weisz Get Witchy

The Witches of Oz sure sounds like a companion piece to The Witches of Eastwick. What it is is the collective that is Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz of Oz: The Great and Powerful. The trio of witchery sat down recently to discuss their Sam Raimi-directed, James Franco-starring prequel to The Wizard of Oz.

Oz The Great and Powerful Mila Kunis

Kunis for one found the challenge immense... but chose to ignore the fears. “You know, it was one of those things where I couldn’t be nervous about playing such an iconic character or at least playing a character that had such an iconic end result,” she said of a certain Oz witch. “I didn’t want to ruin it and I didn’t want to re-create it and I didn’t want to re-interpret it. And so in order for me to wrap my head around it, I had to make sense of her origin.”

That’s the key to the entire Raimi film, as teased in the Oz: The Great and Powerful trailer. This is the story of how Oz got to the community that bears his name.

A certain witch that Kunis plays (don't want to give too much away)... has a backstory as well. “This whole thing was just given to me, kind of like a gift. Here’s a girl who’s incredibly naïve and very young and doesn’t believe she’s almost worthy of love. She meets James’s character (James Franco is Oz) and falls madly in love with him. Then she gets her heart broken," Kunis said.

"She probably doesn’t have the emotional tools of dealing with heartache. She takes the easy way route, given by her sister (Weisz), and goes through an emotional transformation that’s mirrored by a physical one. I honestly viewed her as just a normal girl who gets her heart broken who just so happens to be a witch that can fly.”

Michelle Williams Oz the Great and Powerful

Once Williams accepted the part of Glinda, she didn’t allow the original classic to enter her head. “What I saw on the page was very different from the original film. I saw somebody who had the kind of spunk and vigor of a '30s, '40s screwball romantic comedy heroine," she recalled. But, she really wanted to capture that iconic voice. "I really wanted to speak in that high little lilting voice that she had."

Her director had some unique thoughts on Williams' characterization. "Sam and I spoke very early on about it and he said something very smart which is that there's a reason that Glinda doesn't go down the Yellow Brick Road in the original movie, and it's because she's fully formed. We wanted to make a Glinda that was a little bit more human.”

For one, Weisz found her witch unlike any character she’s ever played. “I've never done a film where my costume was as important as it was in this one. I feel like I've mainly been in jeans and T-shirts and a scrubbed face, so the costume was 99-percent of my character," Weisz said. "I feel like it was a cross between something very regal and glamorous, and also like a bird of prey and also something slightly militaristic with feather collar, feather headdress."

She also appreciated how her one costume could serve as an almost mood ring. “Basically, I have one dress which changes from emerald green to black when I show my true colors to the audience and they know that I'm really bad and not good," Weisz said. She saw herself as a warrior more than witch. "She is kind of like a military dictator in a way."

Playing up her evil was quite fun as well. "She's ruling the citizens of the Emerald City with a very cruel hand. She's a very mean, mean lady but she also really wants the throne," she added. "So I think it was a cross between a glamorous queen and a military bird of prey.”

Williams concurs with Weisz’s sentiment in terms of getting into the costume being everything. “I think the costumes were incredibly important and we spent a lot of time working on them, to the point where I think we even pushed shooting for a day because I was still trying to get comfortable in the costume," Williams revealed.

"I wanted it to feel very dainty and very delicate and then for her second costume, what she changes into battle, to be something that's more appropriate to run and walk in while still maintaining kind of feminine shape. I guess like a princess armor.”

Kunis, of the three, has quite an arc that plays out over the course of the film, teased in this Oz: The Great and Powerful clip. She was quite cautious as to not push it too far in either direction. "Very rarely are you given the opportunity to have such a fantastical character. It’s fun to play somebody that has no boundaries, that has no rules. There’s no book you can read on how to play a witch so you kind of just create your own version," Kunis said.

Yet, she had to be aware of where the original character winds up in the 1939 film. "It’s incredibly frightening because my character does have an end result that is so incredibly iconic that you just don’t want to mess it up."

When it comes to purists who feel that maybe we don't need to head down the yellow brick road again, Kunis feels it's a no-win situation and that everyone involved simply had to do the best they could. "It’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I mean, I’d be lying if I told you that it wasn’t incredibly frightening," Kunis said.

"But we did not re-watch The Wizard of Oz. There was no way of ever doing it justice."
