One for the Money Trailer: Katherine Heigl's Next Flop or Hit?

0
0

Since exiting Grey's Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has starred in Killers and Life as We Know It, a pair of movies chock full of rom-com cliches and ludicrous storylines.

How will she follow up these films? Aside from a small role in New Year's Eve, the actress will anchor One for the Money, which appears to follow the same formula as the aforementioned flops. Look for Heigl to appear as Stephanie Plum, a New Jersey resident who is in need of cash and becomes a bounty hunter.

Her main target? The guy who dumped her back in high school. Naturally. Check out the official trailer for this January 27, 2012 release now:

Justin Timberlake Signs on for "Spinning Gold"

Justin Timberlake shows no signs of cinematic slowdown.

The very busy singer-turned-actor (who will next be seen in the film In Time) has signed on to portray Neil Bogart, the co-founder of Casablanca Records, in the biopic Spinning Gold.

Justin Timberlake at Work

Says producer/screenwriter Tim Bogart of the casting:

"This movie is literally three decades in the making, but we knew that without the perfect actor to bring our father to life on film, his essence and impact on the lives and careers he inspired would never be fully captured. From the moment we met Justin, we knew we'd found our Neil Bogart. With Justin also a producer on the movie, together we're crafting this saga about a young dreamer who started with nothing and came of age in the '60s and '70s, believing anything was possible and every risk was worth taking. Though he died at only 39, he lived to see all his dreams come true."

Bogart died of cancer and lymphoma at age 39 in 1982. No production schedule has been released for the film yet.

Anne Hathaway seems quite comfortable in her catsuit for Dark Knight Rises. The Academy Award nominee was shot this past weekend in her costume, standing beside a very serious Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon. Then again, when is Gordon ever not serious?

Anne Hathaway as Catwoman on Dark Knight Rises Set
Christopher Nolan's latest Batman opus doesn’t hit screens until July of 2012. Each week seems to bring a new peek into the world he’s creating for his final go-around as a Batman helmer.

Very little is known about the upcoming Dark Knight Rises storyline, except that Tom Hardy is the villain Bain, Bale returns for his last go-around as The Bat, Nolan favorite Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) is cast and Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine are all back reprising their roles.

Hollywood Film Awards Honorees Revealed: Christopher Plummer Scores!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Plummer are being rewarded for stellar performances in 50/50 and Beginners, respectively, at the 15th annual Hollywood Film Awards.

Living Out of the Closet

An actress having a breakthrough year unlike any other, Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Debt, Take Shelter, Tree of Life), will be given the Breakthrough Actress Award and, my goodness, rightfully so. Plummer’s award is the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award for his astounding work in Beginners while Gordon-Levitt gets his richly deserved award for Breakthrough Actor for 50/50. Interestingly enough, we learned at the Toronto Film Festival from 50/50 producer and star Seth Rogen that James McAvoy was originally slated for the role, but had to back out due to a family emergency.

The Hollywood Film Awards are put on by Starz Entertainment and are the first of the award season fetes that allows us to get that Oscar nominee picture clearer into focus.

Movie Fanatic previously announced that The Help was earning the Hollywood Ensemble Award and Rango would get the Hollywood Animation Award.

The actual presentation of the awards will take place October 24 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Run Diary is going poster crazy as last week, the film finally put its star Johnny Depp front and center on its movie poster. The first one-sheet featured mini rum bottles spelling out the words The Rum Diary. Now, the latest poster release has Depp at the end of a room in utter dismay, greeting the day in his boxers.

Johnny Depp in Rum Diary Poster
The Rum Diary is based on the celebrated novel by Hunter S. Thompson. The story follows Depp as Paul Kemp, a journalist who trades in the madness of 1950s New York City for the craziness of Puerto Rico.

Once in Puerto Rico (notice the Welcome to Puerto Rico banner outside the window in the poster), Kemp works at a daily newspaper, The San Juan Star. He falls for a young woman played by Amber Heard who is the fiance of a businessman played by Aaron Eckhart. His dealings are less than savory and his wishes are to turn the island into a playground for wealthy Americans.

The Rum Diary lands in theaters October 28.

In a quiet week on the DVD and Blu-Ray release front with Transformers: Dark of the Moon looking to rule the home video charts.

The third film in the Transformers franchise comes home, a classic gets its due on Blu-Ray and the world awaits the October 4 Blu-Ray release of the current box office champ, Lion King.

Transformers Dark of the Moon: Shia LaBeouf is back and it is the entire planet that is threatened this time out. LaBeouf’s character is out of work and publically ridiculed for his very public statements about the Transformers. He has lost Megan Fox and gained Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a woman who works for a mysterious man (Patrick Dempsey) whose good-bad scale is clearly gray.

Transformers Dark of the Moon Blu-Ray
But, Transformers Dark of the Moon begins with the historic Moon landing and how it was in fact a secret mission that discovers we are not alone in the galaxy.

That vital piece of information being withheld from the Autobots in their battle against the Decepticons could wipe the human race off the planet.

The Blu-Ray and DVD include dozens of extras, and as director Michael Bay does on his films, many are completely fascinating.

Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song stars Pretty Little Liars breakout Lucy Hale in the role of a modern day Cinderella, complete with awful step siblings and parent.  The songs are catchy, the premise is cute and it is the rare film that adults and teens can both enjoy.

Cinderalla Story Blu-RayThis Cinderella story has a rocking soundtrack and also has the power of the follow your dreams storyline as Katie (Hale) has a yearning to become a famous singer.

Heathers: In our classic that lands on Blu-Ray for the first time department, the Winona Ryder and Christian Slater instant classic finally arrives in the hi-def home video format. If you don’t know the Heathers story, picture this: It’s John Hughes’ world with explosives, coupled with a more real picture of high school during that era than many other films can claim.

What's Your Number: Anna Faris Speaks to Movie Fanatic

0
0

Anna Faris stars in What’s Your Number and is also a producer on the film. The comic actress, given her success with The House Bunny where she also served as producer, sees taking that position as elemental in getting the films she adores made. “I feel like, especially in the comedic world, how things have to be done,” Faris told Movie Fanatic. “You have to be a part of it to get a movie made.”

Anna Faris in What's Your Number
The star first grabbed the collective attention of the world for her starring role in Scary Movie and its sequels. Her turns in Just Friends, The House Bunny and Observe and Report made her a go-to comedic actress. Although she quickly deflects any compliments about her dramatic work in Lost in Translation or Brokeback Mountain, Faris is clearly one full fledged talented actress. She even nailed the voice over work in the delicious Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Faris is at a beach hotel in Santa Monica -- here to discuss her illustrious career, working with What's Your Number co-star Chris Evans, her husband Chris Pratt on her latest film as well as why What’s Your Number spoke to her creatively.

Movie Fanatic: In What’s Your Number, your character seems to have a history of becoming something other than herself for her boyfriend’s sake. Do you think you have ever had to do that in terms of your career in Hollywood?

Anna Faris: In every career you are balancing how you negotiate tricky waters but I think that’s been something nice that comedy has been able to give me; the ability to laugh at myself and hopefully, not take this whole Hollywood world too seriously.

Movie Fanatic: You must see dozens of romantic comedy scripts. What was it about this one that got you?

Anna Faris: I loved how it felt so sharp. I loved playing characters are a bit of a mess. I think for the last decade we’ve seen a lot of women in film that are not that. They are trying to juggle it all in an organized way. I was really excited to play someone who’s lost, unemployed, who drinks a lot, she sleeps around – that was exciting to me. Those scripts don’t come around very often.

Movie Fanatic: Any stalking the ex stories that fed your characterization?

Anna Faris: I had my college ex-boyfriend’s class schedule memorized [laughs]. I would “accidentally” bump into him all the time. He tried to reach out to me six months ago so I feel like I came out on top. I don’t try to keep in touch with exes. I have like two.

Movie Fanatic: How did you find your way to What’s Your Number?

Anna Faris: I was attached to it quite a while. The writers and other producers came to me and we brought it to New Regency and they were really excited so that’s how it worked for me.

Anna Faris Stars in What's Your Number
Movie Fanatic: Anna, are you that good at basketball? You’re not really, are you?

Anna Faris: What? You could tell?

Movie Fanatic: And was that scene at the Boston Garden always strip basketball?

Anna Faris: No [laughs]. We were able to secure the Boston Garden so they changed it suddenly to strip basketball and I suddenly had to be at basketball rehearsal every night after work. It’s one of those things you read and don’t actually think “Oh, I’m gonna have to be in my underwear.” I just thought “Oh, that’s kind of charming.” Then the day comes and, suddenly, you’re wearing like the tiniest clothes of front of people you’ve been working with the last three months. All your credibility is just down the drain.

Movie Fanatic: Do you feel there’s a double standard with women sleeping around and having a “number,” even being called sluts and men doing it getting the stud label? Is warranted at all?

Anna Faris: No, it’s unfortunate. I think it’s a conversation we can’t help but have. I think there is a bit of a moral identity as women to somehow to link the number of people we’ve been with, or how much experience we have and whether or not we should feel guilty for those experiences. It’s a fun conversation to have, unless you’re asking your husband [laughs]. I don’t want to know how many people he’s been with. But no, do I think it’s a dated, archaic conversation, yeah. But, it’s still there.

Movie Fanatic: You’ve done it before, but how was working with your husband, Chris Pratt?

Anna Faris: It was terrifying actually because I think I’m more concerned about his opinion of my acting than anybody else and he is really particular so it was really scary but great and I was really honored that he was able to do it. He plays Disgusting Donald [laughs] who is sort of the instigator for my character’s whole journey and I did not cast his fiancé. She was way too hot for my liking!

Movie Fanatic: Did you two have to practice lines together?

Anna Faris: Yeah, we would. It’s just terrifying in general. It’s like your parents or loved ones reading something you’ve written. The scrutiny is going to be much more magnified.

Chris Evans and Anna Faris in What's Your Number
Movie Fanatic: You’ve done dramas, but many more comedies. Is that something you just look for?

Anna Faris: I used to feel this need to prove to people that I could do something dramatic but the truth is -- I don’t know if I can. I don’t think it’ in my skill set but I do love making comedies. It’s been so much fun for me. I hope that I continue to.

It's Like Butter: Jennifer Garner Stars in New Clip

Butter, starring Jennifer Garner, took the Toronto Film Festival by storm. Now, the film has released a new clip from the Jim Field Smith directed film that sure sets the tone for audiences to hone in on what the big deal is about Butter.

Jennifer Garner in Butter
The film is so much more than a story about a butter carving contest in the Midwest. What is clear from Butter’s new clip is that the film is a parody of the 2008 Democratic presidential primary -- particularly the battle between Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Butter has an impressive cast beyond the star wattage of Garner. Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, Phyllis Smith, Alicia Silverstone, Ashley Greene, Ty Burell, Rob Corrdry and Kristen Shaal all star in what is sure to be an instant classic. The film arrives in theaters October 21 and until then; this clip will have to whet your appetite for Butter.

50/50 Star Seth Rogen: The Move Fanatic Interview Part I

0
0

Seth Rogen has always been able to effortlessly make us laugh. With 50/50, Rogen has struck a chord that makes us cry, cheer with hope, and yes -- still laugh. We’re visiting with the actor, who is also a producer on 50/50, at the Toronto Film Festival to talk about his astounding new film and how he and best friend Will Reiser’s experience with Will’s cancer was able to be made from a personal tragedy turned triumph to an inspirational Hollywood film.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen Star in 50/50
In 50/50 Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, a loose version of Reiser, where Rogen is Kyle -- a character based on himself. The film also stars Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston. Don’t miss part two of our Seth Rogen interview September 28, as well as out chats with Kendrick, Reiser and Howard on September 29.

Movie Fanatic: Were there parts of your own real life experience with Will that you felt had to be in the film?

Seth Rogen: We kind of applied that thought to the overall feeling of the movie. There was no like, “We need to include this” or “There has to be a moment where I hit on a girl in a bookstore.” It just wasn’t like that. It was more that we wanted to make an entertaining movie that was about something that was tough. So I think it was just more overall it has to feel like how it felt for us. That was our mantra. “Does this feel like something that would’ve happened? Does this feel like something we would’ve gone through? Does this feel like one of those things?” I can’t remember me personally giving will any parameters of like, “You have to do this, you have to have this type of moment in it.” At times, reality kind of bailed us out of situations [laughs]. If we couldn’t think of something, we could always go to reality and think like, “Oh, this happened, maybe that would work.” The last scene in the movie is a good example of that. We didn’t know how to end the movie. The scene where I’m changing the dressing is probably the closest to a scene that happened in real life out of any scene in the entire movie. It was like verbatim what is was like. I had to change the dressing on his wound one time and it was disgusting [laughs]. I almost threw up, and it was exactly like that. So if anything, we could always go reality.

Movie Fanatic: Did Joseph Gordon-Levitt consult with Will?

Seth Rogen: I would see Joe talking to Will a lot. It was never behavioral, it was always emotional. Like, “How did you feel when you had to tell your mom you had cancer? How did you feel when you went to the doctor for this?” It was never, “How did you hold your cup?” Because we didn’t want it to really be like Will. We wanted it just emotionally to feel like Will.

Movie Fanatic: What types of things did you tell Will before he sat down to write your experience into a movie?

Seth Rogen in 50/50
Seth Rogen: I think we kind of just sent him off. What we instilled in him was to just try to make it feel as much like what we went through as possible -- because he did change. He was better after than he was before, honestly. As a person he was easier to be around. He was happier. He was funnier. He worked better, not more -- just kind of smarter. He kind of brought his whole life together in a much more positive way, ultimately. So we kind of just encouraged him to explore that. And then when he wrote it I think the first problem was maybe the Adam (Gordon-Levitt) character was a little to sympathetic -- which you would imagine would be your instinct if writing a movie about yourself [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: How do you think fictional Will differed from what you went through with your friend?

Seth Rogen: I think this process caused us to have conversations we never actually had about how maybe Will could’ve acted differently. Maybe he didn’t articulate certain things that he could have, or could have included certain people more in various aspects of what he was going through. So I think that’s where we really kind of came in and helped him develop the story -- and also the shape of it. It’s tricky when you’ve been a writer for so long being produced by someone, and then you’re suddenly put in the role of producer because you obviously have a lot of opinions. But it’s a fine line because you as a writer don’t want to be controlled too much. You want certain liberties. It was an interesting position to be in for me, but I think we were just hard on the material. We really knew that we couldn’t do a bullshit version of the movie. Ultimately anyone can criticize anything, but we knew ultimately we had to make it hard to criticize the overall feeling of the movie. We wanted to be an honest one, you know? And that’s what we were the hardest on. A good example is there was a scene where we were coffin shopping that he wrote into the first draft -- which was funny and there were jokes in it that were funny. But, we were like, “We never went coffin shopping. That’s insane.” There was a scene where he went and talked to a rabbi. And that was funny, again, but you’re like, “You didn’t talk to a rabbi. That was the last thing you were going to do.” He’s like, “Yeah, you’re right.” Again, we asked: Would we have done this? Is this how it would’ve happened? And that was kind of our barometer, generally speaking.

Movie Fanatic: You’re such an impeccable comic. Did you feel there were times where you had to put funny things in the script?

Seth Rogen: We initially came out with a version of the script that was not nearly funny enough. We had to really come up with ways to make people laugh. Like the scene where he eats the weed macaroon and then walks through the hospital stoned, we knew just in that area we needed something kind of funny. And so I literally remember thinking we need to think of a way to put something funny here. That’s what we came up with. We knew that it had to be funny at times -- and distributed pretty evenly throughout the movie. We would be watching a scene and go, “We need a (expletive) joke in this scene.” But the challenge was that joke could never come at the expense of what you feel like would actually be happening.

Seth Rogen on the set of 50/50
Movie Fanatic: Will’s mom is played by Anjelica Huston and what a handful she is, but rightfully so since her child has cancer. Was her portrayal at all like Will’s real mom?

Seth Rogen: That’s not what his mother’s like [laughs]. It is fictionalized in some way. Honestly I think the thing that is drawn the most from real life is probably how Will just didn’t communicate with his mother as much as he should’ve and how he kind of shut her out a little bit. I think that is more of what the real part of that relationship is. I mean his mother -- I’m sure like any Jewish mother whose son has cancer -- was probably protective and neurotic about the whole thing. But honestly, Will’s mother’s here in Toronto, I was with her last night -- and she’s nothing like Anjelica Huston is in this movie.

Movie Fanatic: Originally, the title was I’m With Cancer. I like that. How did it come to be 50/50?

Seth Rogen: You know, we’re not stupid [laughs]. We know a title like I’m with Cancer is repellent to some people. I liked it, too, but something you have to acknowledge being a filmmaker who wants people to see his movies is that what you like and you know other people are going to like are two vastly different things. At times, and you have to try to bridge that gap. We wanted it to be a movie everyone liked, so we thought it was stupid to go through great lengths to make a movie that was really accessible and enjoyable and crowd-pleasing and then give it a title that would potentially alienate most of the people who wanted to go see it. We thought, we’ll make the exact movie we want to make. Let’s just call it something that doesn’t repel people. It just seemed like the movie itself was risky enough that it seemed silly to give it a title that was almost even creatively riskier than the movie is in some ways. It almost just felt like it didn’t match.

What's Your Number Interview: Chris Evans Eclipses Captain America

0
0

What’s Your Number is another spoke in the talent wheel possessed by Chris Evans. After being super in Captain America and dramatically delicious in Puncture, now in the Anna Faris starring romantic comedy What’s Your Number, Evans is showing another side of his acting skill set: Comedy.

Chris Evans stars in What's Your Number
Evans, who is busy filming The Avengers currently where he reprises his role as Captain America, is the picture of worried success at the Casa Del Mar Hotel in Santa Monica. He enters our room eager to shine the spotlight on the comedic talents of Faris and that is what makes him so appealing both on screen and off. Evans is a humble success. In his mind, he’s still the guy that grew up in Boston with dreams of making movies.

What’s Your Number not only allowed Evans to flex those comedy muscles, but also film a movie in his hometown. That rare experience was not lost on him during our chat.

His film with Faris follows a woman who believes that her “The One” is someone who exists within her Ex files. Meanwhile, Evans is an across the hall neighbor who helps her in that effort. Sparks fly immediately during the film and we could also describe Evans in person as equally electric.

Movie Fanatic: Were you looking for something different with What’s Your Number?

Chris Evans: I love doing comedies and I feel like I hadn’t done one in a little while. I did Scott Pilgrim but I was in and out in like four days. That was so out there. I love doing comedies. Any film you do, you can’t help but take a little bit home with you. If you’re doing something really heavy and dramatic, you’re gonna go home exhausted and spent. If you do comedy things like this, you go home cracking jokes. It feels like summer camp. I’m always looking to do a movie like this.

Movie Fanatic: How did you come upon the film?

Chris Evans: I had a pretty standard audition process -- got the script, read it, loved it, knew the people involved and just went to pursue it. I went and auditioned and had two or three rounds of just reading with people and got lucky.

Movie Fanatic: Was there a chemistry read with Anna? You guys pop onscreen.

Chris Evans: I missed the chemistry read [laughs]. I was in Houston working on something else and I got sick. I was like, “Well, I just missed my shot” and I begged (the casting director) “Please fight for me.”

Movie Fanatic: Did you think of your character as a player?

Chris Evans: Is that radically new for a guy in his 20s? That’s pretty standard. There’s that window of time when guys in their 20s are just selfish and trying to have a good time. They aren’t looking to settle down. At least not a lot of the guys I know.

Movie Fanatic: There is a good amount of you and Anna seen in the film. Were you uncomfortable with that at all?

Chris Evans: That’s right. Well, the first time I read it, I was like, “Yeah, there is a lot of skin” but it’s funny. It’s all funny. It didn’t ever really feel gratuitous. It felt like it was all serving a pretty humorous purpose.

Movie Fanatic: Have you looked up an ex on the net? If so, how far did you go?

Chris Evans in What's Your Number with Anna Faris

Chris Evans: I’ve done a little digging [laughs]. I’ve done my share but Facebook makes all that real easy.

Movie Fanatic: So they never knew you were looking for them?

Chris Evans: On no. I succeeded and made contact and now we’re good friends.

Movie Fanatic: In the film, Anna compromises herself for a guy. Did you ever have to do that in your career in Hollywood?

Chris Evans: I’ve never had to compromise who I am, meaning shift the way I present the person I am. Maybe there are things I might not want to do. You’re great but this (press interviews) might not be where I wanna be on my Saturday. You’ve gotta jump through those hoops at times but I don’t think that’s a compromise of your integrity. So that’s a no.

Movie Fanatic: Being a comedy, was there any room for improv while filming?

Chris Evans: It was on the page but there was a lot of rehearsal. A lot of times, you don’t get the amount of rehearsal we got. There was a lot of input and a lot of voices and any fire that could have sprung up, we were putting them out weeks before we had to start shooting and that’s rare, especially in comedy.

Movie Fanatic: Another part of you we get to see in What’s Your Number is you singing and playing a guitar. Was that really you?

Chris Evans: Yeah, I do play guitar and, once upon a time, I used to sing. It’s still awkward to do it in front of people but I wasn’t too scared.

Movie Fanatic: You must see a lot of romantic comedy scripts. What was it about this one that really gelled with you?

Chris Evans: For me, a lot of times when you read those scripts you don’t know who is going to be in the film. I knew it was going to be Anna. Every page, I’m picturing Anna doing it. It is a character that is a mess and Anna’s really good at being a mess. She’s funny in every scene. I knew Anna was going to destroy this. She’s so funny. I laughed out loud at least six or seven times when reading the script. If that happens, that’s a good sign.

Movie Fanatic: Can you talk about shooting in Boston? I know you’re from the area.

Anna Faris and Chris Evans film What's Your Number
Chris Evans: I loved it. It was the time of my life. My whole family was 10 minutes away.

Movie Fanatic: What did it mean to you to actually be shooting at the Boston Garden?

Chris Evans: Unbelievable, it was strange that I was running around in my underwear, but you know it was quite a day. It was crazy. I don’t know how to put it into words. It’s one of those rare things that film affords you.

Movie Fanatic: Do you think this movie will remind people that you are more than a superhero as Captain America?

Chris Evans: [Laughs] He also takes his clothes off. Yeah, I don’t know. I’ll say I hope so because I think a good thing about film as opposed to TV is you get variety so you get to flex a lot of different acting muscles. It’s fun to play a certain character and put on a blue suit and toss a shield around and it’s fun to go and crack some jokes and get naked.

Wanted, always ripe for a sequel, will be finally getting one as news has broke that the film’s original screenwriters have been hired to pen the follow-up.

Angelia Jolie in Wanted
Derek Haas and Michael Brandt have been tapped by Universal to get to work on the sequel to Wanted, the action film that starred Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy.

The first Wanted arrived in 2008 and was based on the wildly popular comic by J.H. Jones and Mark Millar. It followed a bored with his life office drone (McAvoy) who learns that his father was a member of a group of elite assassins possessing beyond human abilities.

After earning $341 million at the box office upon its release, we are just wondering: What took so long to get the sequel green lit?!
