Adrianne Palicki on G.I. Joe Retaliation Release Date Change: "It Was Forced Before"

G.I. Joe Retaliation star Adrianne Palicki is ready for the world to see her kicking some butt. Originally set to be released last summer, the action-packed sequel to G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is landing in theaters March 29. No stranger to films and TV shows getting shelved, Palicki admitted she was beginning to wonder when she heard that G.I. Joe 2 was going to share the same fate when it was pushed from summer 2012 to this Friday.

Adrianne Palicki Stars in G.I. Joe Retaliation

After the missteps (Wonder Woman -- she shot a pilot that never aired) and massive delays (Red Dawn) of her previous starring vehicles, Palicki knew G.I. Joe Retaliation was for real when she was watching a certain big game.

“During the Super Bowl, seeing the G.I. Joe Retaliation trailer was like the first moment where it was like, ‘Oh, this is actually happening,’” she admitted. “Because after Wonder Woman and then Red Dawn’s three year delay, I was waiting for that!”

Even though G.I. Joe was pushed back, the film’s star felt it was the right move. If nothing else, they would have had to fight against The Amazing Spider-Man and Batman’s final chapter, The Dark Knight Rises.

“Everything had been pushed but yes, the thing is this movie, in all honesty, it actually is coming out at the right period of time,” Palicki said. “It was forced before. Nine months from after we wrapped? That was crazy.”

Adrianne Palicki G.I. Joe Retaliation

Palicki stars in G.I. Joe Retaliation opposite the first movie’s star, Channing Tatum, but also new additions Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. But it is her character Jaye's prospective romance with co-star DJ Cotrona’s Flint that has gotten much of the attention. In the G.I. Joe mythology, the pair ends up married. But Palicki cautioned that this was not the movie to have them get together.

“I think the studio really wanted a kiss in there. And they said no, it just feels forced in this world where we're saving the world,” Palicki said. ”We feel that in order for this moment to happen, it has to feel not forced. And they're just starting to get to know each other. The characters are introduced and then all of these people are just getting to know each other for the first time. I thought it was tastefully done.”

Having Willis join the G.I. Joe world was a bonus for Palicki as she has been a longtime fan. The actress shares most of the screen time with the action movie veteran.

“It was nerve-wracking because Bruce came into the process a little bit later so when we found out that he was coming and I was going to do a lot of scenes with him,” Palicki said, it made her nervous, given a certain iconic character Willis played and how it affected her as a teen.

Bruce Willis and Adrianne Palicki in GI Joe Retaliation

“I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is one of my first crushes ever with John McClane.’ But the minute I met him we immediately hit it off. It was banter back and forth. A lot of what you're seeing onscreen is what we were like off screen as well. I met a really good friend that way. There were only a couple of moments while we were shooting that he did the little squinty eyes and I was like, 'Oh my gosh. There's Die Hard! Hold this together!'"

Temptation: Tyler Perry on Why He Cast Kim Kardashian

To paraphrase that old TV commercial, when Tyler Perry talks -- people listen. So it is no surprise that he has produced a morality tale that seems to be directed at a world that has by all appearances, decided to take marriage vows a little less serious than previous generations.

Tyler Perry Temptation

Perry met us for an interview about his latest film, Temptation, and admitted that he hopes that the film will get people talking. “I knew there were a lot of people going through things in relationships and I wanted to just raise a flag and say, ‘What happens when you’re tempted?’ One choice -- one bad decision -- can change your entire future and destiny,” Perry said.

“That’s why I wanted to tell this story. That’s why I took the play version and really extended it and really went into all of those different areas because I really wanted it have a grounded feel and look and feel more like reality than anything that I’ve done. I wanted a younger cast because not only is this message for everyone but, it is in particular for younger people. One decision can change your whole life!”

Perry took a chance and cast a woman known more for dominating gossip news than acting, Kim Kardashian. “The expectation I had for her was to come in and do her best and she did,” Perry admitted. “But also, more than anything, it goes back to the younger cast. I wanted to have younger, beautiful, people who are very influential and have their own following.”

Vanessa Williams Kim Kardashian Temptation

The prolific filmmaker (what are the Top 10 Tyler Perry movies?) believes that his message contained throughout the film would strike a chord with people like Kardashian in lead roles. “People pay attention to everything she’s doing,” Perry said.

“Because this message was so important to me, it was very responsible for her and everyone else in the cast to take part in this film. It’s a big message to carry. I think she did a great job and I’m very happy with what she did.”

Perry reported that he believes that there is an 80-20 thing in marriages and those audiences can truly alter their decision-making process when it comes to those morality questions raised by the movie, and teased in the Temptation trailer.

“I want this movie to speak to marriage and to the right decisions and to the wrong decisions. You’re only gonna get 80 percent of what you need in a marriage. And here comes somebody offering 20 percent and 20 percent looks like a whole lot when you’re not getting it so you end up leaving 80 percent to get 20 percent,” Perry said.

“You don’t realize it till you in the 20 what you gave up. So what I’m hoping will speak to making the right choices.”

More often than not, Perry not only writes, directs, produces, but also stars in his films. Not so with Temptation.

“If I didn’t star in any of them I’d be fine,” he said and laughed. “What I found is the audience wants me to do something, like Madea most of the time, and that’s OK. But, the minute I sit down and I write the characters as I see them. If they don’t look like me I don’t force myself to be them.”

Perry’s movies have always covered lots of ground and there is the element of HIV infection in Temptation that could have been its own film. But, Perry felt that there was a need for the topic, given the alarming number of African American women now coming down with the disease.

It was tough for Perry to include that aspect in his script. “When I initially wrote it, there was some resistance to me telling the HIV story. They asked, ‘Does she have to have HIV cause the story stands on its own? Is that necessary?’ What is important to me is that people get it,” Perry said.

Temptation Jurnee Smollett-Bell Robbie Jones

“Within African American women there are new cases arising all the time. To have an audience of women who have loved what I’ve done for a long time, to not bring that message would be irresponsible. It would then become about something else. It would then become about let’s make this movie in a certain way instead of the truth.”

The major characters in the film have moments of regret, given their various forms of giving in to Temptation. We wondered, especially given that most successful people supposedly have few regrets… does Perry have any?

“I have one and that’s when my mom was dying she was trying to tell me something. She said she was tired. I tried to talk her out of it and let her rest, rather than listen to her and what she had to say,” Perry said. “I have found about people, especially in those moments, is that they have so much they want to say. That is the decision I regret the most."

The Place Beyond the Pines Director: Ryan Gosling "Makes the World a Better Place"

The Place Beyond the Pines writer-director Derek Cianfrance has found a kindred spirit in star Ryan Gosling. The pair made Blue Valentine together and when we spoke to the helmer for an exclusive interview for his latest film that arrives in theaters March 29, he shared a story letting us know how keenly connected these two are.

A Place Beyond the Pines Ryan Gosling

“I was at his agent’s house in 2007 and was having dinner and we were talking about Blue Valentine and I had been six months into writing the script for Pines at that point. I was asking Ryan, ‘You’ve done so many things in your young career, what haven’t you done that you wish you could do?’ He said, ‘Well, I always wanted to rob a bank. But, I’ve been too scared of jail,’” Cianfrance recalled.

“I said, ‘That’s funny. I’m writing a movie about a bank robber.’”

Cianfrance inquired as to whether Gosling he had given any thought as to how he would do it. “He said, ‘I would do it on a motorcycle and I could go in with a helmet, and no one would see my face. And I’d leave on a motorcycle ‘cause they’re fast and agile. Then, I’d drive it into the back of a U-Haul truck parked four blocks away. Cops would be looking for a motorcycle and not a truck,’” Cianfrance said.

It was that moment that it was official: Cianfrance had found his brotherly soul mate. “I told Ryan, ‘That’s crazy! That’s exactly what we wrote in the script for A Place Beyond the Pines.’ I talk about destiny, that’s what it feels like with Ryan. We have similar ideas. I told him I could make his dreams come true.”

Cianfrance also believes that Gosling is not just a great actor, he elevates every soul he touches as a human being. “He just makes everyone better -- including me. I appreciate his magic. This guy walks around and makes the world a better place,” he said.

“When you’re making a movie with him, he makes the movie a better movie. Ryan and I have had similar impulses even though we come from such different places. It’s like destiny that we’ve come to work together.”

The Place Beyond the Pines Derek Cianfrance Directs

The story teased in A Place Beyond the Pines trailer follows two distinct tales… one from Gosling’s perspective and the other from the angle of Bradley Cooper. Gosling is a traveling fair worker who is the star attraction in a dangerous motorcycle demonstration who reconnects with a woman he loves (Eva Mendes) and decides to stay in town. When funds come up short, he turns to robbing banks in order to support his dream of being with his love.

Meanwhile, Cooper plays a local policeman who happens to be at the right place at the right time and becomes a hero… but with a cost. The two actors share only one scene together and it serves as a baton pass as Gosling’s movie becomes Cooper’s.

The genesis of this brilliant idea arose from two favorite films of Cianfrance and they can even be felt in The Place Beyond the Pines poster.

“The story was structurally one I thought of 20 years ago when I saw Napoleon by Abel Gance and I started thinking about making a triptych movie. Then I saw Psycho and I’d always known there was a shower scene in Psycho, but I didn’t know you spend 45 minutes with Janet Leigh before she went in the shower,” Cianfrance said. “There’s that great baton pass from her to Tony Perkins.”

Then in 2007, when his wife was pregnant with his second son, he began to think about legacy. “What was I going to pass on? All of a sudden, that became the baton pass for The Place Beyond the Pines,” he admitted. “That became the legacy. It became a movie about legacy and the fire that is passed between generations with the echo of violence of America. It became really clear.”

The other half of that baton pass is taken by Cooper’s character. He is a rookie police officer whose Attorney General father had higher hopes for him vocationally. When he becomes a hero because of his momentary experience with Gosling’s character, his entire life changes. Cianfrance saw the same traits in the character as he did Cooper.

“I knew Ryan was the guy for five or six years, but I didn’t know who was Avery. I was meeting a bunch of actors and one of them was Bradley Cooper. Who is he, the guy from The Hangover? I didn’t think much of it. This was before he shot Silver Linings. I didn’t expect much to tell you the truth,” Cianfrance said.

Bradley Cooper The Place Beyond the Pines

But, once he met him… the reality of what Cooper could bring became blinding. “When I first met with him, there was something riveting about him. On the outside, he was perfect. He was the all-American guy. But, on the inside, he was wrestling with something. He was wrestling with things that I could relate to. I thought it would be fascinating to put a character in the world that played with people’s expectations,” he said.

“On the outside this character would be paraded around as a hero, but on the inside he felt corrupted. He felt he had this toxic shame he couldn’t get rid off. It’s Shakespearean in that way. I knew Bradley could do that. So, I wrote the role specifically for him, based on my own misconceptions about who I thought he was.”

Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is back on the big screen being a hero in one fun film, as we stated in our G.I. Joe: Retaliation review. The man who seems to be injecting sequels with life (such as Journey 2) has only been making movies for a short while. Yet, he has amassed a serious group of hit movies.

Fast Five Dwayne Johnson

As G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theaters, we wanted to ask our esteemed readership which of his flicks is your favorite? He's run the gamut from action to family movies, and even a comedy to boot (The Other Guys).

From the moment he made his acting debut in That '70s Show, we knew there was something special about him. With that million dollar smile and his ability to not take himself too seriously, Johnson announced himself as a cinematic force with which to be reckoned. With The Mummy Returns and then its sequel that saw him in his first starring role, The Scorpion King, Johnson made it clear he is going nowhere.

Johnson is not done with movies this year either, what with Fast and Furious 6 and that killer Pain and Gain red band trailer, we've got more The Rock to come!

So tell us...

What is your favorite Dwayne Johnson movie?

Exclusive: Going Mental with Director P.J. Hogan

Mental arrives from the filmmaker behind Muriel’s Wedding, Peter Pan and My Best Friend’s Wedding and tells a story that is awfully close to his heart. While growing up, writer-director P.J. Hogan found himself a twelve-year-old boy whose mother was taken away to a mental institution.

Toni Collette Mental

One day, his father picked up a hitchhiker and asked her to be his kids’ nanny. The film, teased in the Mental trailer, follows this character, named in the movie Shaz (Toni Collette), as it explores what it means to be mental. Like, who defines crazy?

“I don’t think anyone could have come from a more dysfunctional upbringing than mine,” Hogan said and laughed. “One of the things about Mental is it asks, ‘What is normal? Does it exist?’ My personal feeling is no. Some of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met have been completely off their rockers.”

We caught up with Hogan for an exclusive interview where he talks about the making of Mental, why he adores Collette so much (his star of Muriel’s Wedding) and how legendary producer Jerry Zucker has a comic best friend in the Australian helmer.

Movie Fanatic: You got to be your own boss on this one. That’s so rare in films, how nice was that?

P.J. Hogan: I made the film I set out to make, for better or worse.

Movie Fanatic: Loved his work for years, and I see that Jerry Zucker (Airplane) is one of your film’s producers. What is it like to work with such a comic mastermind?

P.J. Hogan: This is my third film with Jerry. The first time I worked with Jerry was on My Best Friend’s Wedding. He sent me the screenplay based on his liking Muriel’s Wedding, which was my first film. I don’t know what he saw in it that made him think I was right [laughs] to direct this romantic comedy. But, I’m glad he asked me. I had a great time making it and it was very successful. I was in awe of Jerry because there’s nobody that knows more about comedy filmmaking. I’ve learned a lot from Jerry. I think one of the reasons we get on so well is we share a sense of humor, but we’re also very different. Jerry always says, "You just go a little further than I go P.J." And I always say, “Come on, Jerry… Ruthless People… that walks the edge.”

Mental Poster

Movie Fanatic: Another person you’ve worked with several times now is Toni Collette, on Muriel’s Wedding and now Mental.

P.J. Hogan: I love working with Toni. I wish I could make every film with Toni.

Movie Fanatic: What is about her that you keep bringing her back to your world?

P.J. Hogan: We made our first film together. It was both our first films. That film gave us both careers. We also toured the world together on that movie because nobody had heard of us. We were everywhere, like a rash trying to convince people to see the movie. Toni and I have wanted to work together again for a very long time. In fact, when I was directing Muriel’s Wedding, I talked to her about the character of Shaz, because it’s based on a real person. Toni would often say, “Why are we making a film about your sister, Muriel? We should be making a movie about this total lunatic Shaz. There’s a part I would love to play one day.” That stuck with me and I just had to figure out a way to tell the story. The real Shaz stayed in my life for so long. I met her when I was 12, just like in the film, but unlike the film, she stayed in my life for another 20 years.

Movie Fanatic: Is it tough to write and produce a film that is so personal or is it cathartic?

P.J. Hogan: It’s actually really easy. Muriel’s Wedding was a little bit tougher because that was one of my first films and two, it was a very personal story. But, you know what? I learned something on Muriel’s Wedding. I don’t know what kind of filmmaker I am yet, but the less I bring of myself to my films, I don’t think they work very well. I didn’t have an orthodox upbringing. I’ve been a freak from an early age and remain one. I see the world in a certain way. I think it’s normal. I really believe that if a filmmaker has anything to say, it’s probably something from within. If you’re a filmmaker, your voice has to come from life experience.

The trailer for Before Midnight is here. The film is the third in a series that includes Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.

The buzz is that this trailer is ever-so-slightly spoilery, and though I've seen the first two films, it was a while ago and I can't really spot the spoiler. But if you're concerned with going into the theater without a completely clean slate, you may want to skip this one:

Richard Linklater directs the film, which takes place nine years after the events of Before Sunset. Ethan Hawke (Sinister) and Julie Delpy star as the turbulent couple who first met on a train in the 1995 film.

Before Midnight will premiere May 24.

We've got a new photo from the set of Anchorman: The Legend Continues and it leads us to believe that our man Ron Burgundy has a son. Can you imagine the hilarity that could ensue from that? Given the fact we know that Christina Applegate will return for Anchorman 2, and the little nugget of information director Adam McKay once said about a "custody battle," we think the kid in the photo is perhaps Ron, Jr.!

Will Ferrell Anchorman The Legend Continues Set Photo

The cast for Anchorman 2 is getting quite crowded, what with Harrison Ford joining and James Marsden cast as a rival anchor. Early rumors have this next chapter in the Ron Burgundy saga following the challenges of the arrival of cable news and its effect on local news shows, such as the one Ron anchors.

Now, given that the "custody battle" quote is out there, we're guessing he and Veronica Corningstone (Applegate) are no longer together... which is sad -- or has the making of hilarity!

He is a crop dusting plane who has big sky dreams of being an aerial racer. There are just two problems: Dusty is not built for racing and he's just a little afraid of heights. Kind of a problem for a plane, no?

As teased in the Planes trailer, the voice cast is stellar and features Monty Python's John Cleese, Teri Hatcher, Val Kilmer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cedric the Entertainer.

Look for Planes to take flight August 9.

It's official, people. After rumors that Robert Redford would appear in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the legendary actor confirmed his role last night. In a Q&A after a screening of his latest film The Company You Keep, he answered a question in regards to the sequel to Captain America and left no doubt he is on board to join Chris Evans in the highly anticipated Marvel Studios release.

Marvel Phase 2 is in full effect as the studio has dominated news of late, especially with its upcoming film in the next chapter, teased in the latest Iron Man 3 trailer.

In the Q&A after his The Company You Keep screening, Redford stated, "I'm doing this film because it's different. It's a new thing for me. I think these films are really powerful. I think they're great. This is the kind of film I would have loved to see as a kid."

This is the first time Redford has ever done a film like this; normally he's seen in flicks that would be seen at his indie-film fest Sundance. Witnessing him in a high-profile superhero flick, most likely as a higher-up agent in the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, will be a treat. Stay tuned for more on this story!

The Sweeney Exclusive Clip: Go Behind the Scenes

As we stated in our The Sweeney review, the U.K. set crime thriller is an astounding piece of work. The film lands on DVD and Blu-Ray April 2 and Movie Fanatic has been given an exclusive clip that takes our readers behind the scenes of the film that stars Ray Winstone (The Departed), Damian Lewis (Homeland) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America).

The Sweeney follows one of London’s most elite crime fighting units that is led by Detective Jack Regan (Winstone). The crew “thinks like crooks to capture the crooks.” Sometimes, that riles the Internal Affairs office of the London PD, not to mention many of their fellow officers on the force.

Much of the action in The Sweeney follows the crew as they try to get to the bottom of a rash of armed robberies across the British capital. There’s a fine line established in the thriller, between doing what is necessary for the greater good and what’s right morally. More often than not, the Sweeney, as the unit is called, see those issues as synonymous.

Check out our exclusive clip from the film as Movie Fanatic takes you into the movie magic that is The Sweeney.
