Weekend Movie Preview: March 29, 2013

Although the calendar says it's the last weekend in March, it sure feels like summer at the movie houses across the land. Between the arrival of the blockbuster sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Stephenie Meyer's follow-up to her Twilight Saga, Tyler Perry's latest drama hitting theaters and Bradley Cooper sharing the screen with Ryan Gosling -- it's getting hot out there!

We look at all three releases and help you decide which to take in this weekend.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation: Dwayne Johnson joins Channing Tatum in the sequel to G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. Whereas that film disappointed, our G.I. Joe: Retaliation review found this second film in the series downright fun. Johnson seems to rock everything he does, and this latest action fest is no different. The story is more compelling than the first go-around and the action is tight and thrilling. Director Jon Chu takes his dance movie background and brings a ballet of violence that is sure to thrill longtime G.I. Joe fans.

The Host: Meyer wrote The Host in between putting out her third and fourth Twilight books, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. It is certainly a challenging movie to bring to the big screen to say the least. Since most of the action takes place inside the head of the protagonist, moving from the page to the screen could not have been an easy effort. As our The Host review states, the movie suffers for that very reason. It's not from a lack of pedigree with Gattaca director Andrew Niccol and Hanna star Saoirse Ronan doing their best.

Tyler Perry's Temptation: Perry delves into a darker area than we're used to with his latest. Temptation follows what happens to the wife in a perceived to be happy couple who finds her self "tempted" to stray. Unfortunately, as we normally appreciate Perry's work, this one is a swing and a miss. Our Temptation review delves further, but overall, the film has too many plot holes, diversions and useless banter between Kim Kardashian and the film's lead (yes, Kardashian is in the movie). Maybe next time, Tyler.

The Place Beyond the Pines: Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper serve as story bookends for this film from the writer-director of Blue Valentine. The flick is only opening in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, before premiering everywhere April 12. This is one of those movies that Movie Fanatic cannot recommend enough, as we state in our The Place Beyond the Pines review. It is powerful, moving and all-outstanding.

Evil Dead: The Walking Dead Trailer

Evil Dead lands in theaters April 5 and arrives from the original film's producers and star, Bruce Campbell. In fact, Campbell appears with director Fede Alverez to introduce the film's latest trailer. The spot is set to premiere during the season finale of AMC's The Walking Dead on Sunday. Is it us, or is that a match made in zombie heaven?

Having seen the film, we can firmly state that fans of the original will be thrilled with what they see onscreen. That could probably have been discerned from the first Evil Dead trailer when it initially landed.

The newest vision in the film series stars Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as a college student who heads out to her family's remote cabin in the woods with her brother (Shiloh Fernandez) and friends to deal with some important personal issues (you'll get no spoilers here!). Soon after, they discover an ancient book and against some of the group's wishes -- someone opens it and unleashes hell.

The latest trailer for Evil Dead also is of special joy for Movie Fanatic to present to you. It features our quote... "The scariest movie you will see this year. Guaranteed." Stay with Movie Fanatic as our full review arrives April 5.

The Place Beyond the Pines Review: Ryan Gosling & Bradley Cooper Clash

$

Derek Cianfrance is on quite a roll for a young filmmaker. His Blue Valentine was mesmerizing and his latest writing-directing effort, The Place Beyond the Pines, is even more astounding.

Ryan Gosling Eva Mendes Star in The Place Beyond the Pines

As shown in The Place Beyond the Pines trailer, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper. Their lives will explosively intertwine in ways that will result in hearts broken, lives altered forever and legacies left that not one soul in the audience could have seen coming.

Gosling is a motorcycle daredevil who works in a traveling circus. As the film commences, he’s in a town that we learn he knows well. After finishing his act one evening, he heads over to a former flame’s (Mendes) house. Soon after, he learns that a previous rendezvous with her resulted in a child. Immediately he quits the daredevil business and seeks to settle into this pine tree-laden upstate New York hamlet.

Not qualified for much, Gosling’s Luke feels he has no choice but to use his skills on a motorcycle to knock off local banks. Things seem to be going swimmingly until he encounters Cooper’s rookie cop. It is at that moment that Cianfrance takes what was Gosling’s film and immediately we are off on a Cooper-centric story.

As told to us in our Derek Cianfrance interview, he was inspired by Psycho and Alfred Hitchcock’s storytelling tool in that film where he took Janet Leigh’s movie and at a certain point, it was all Anthony Perkins.

For Cianfrance, the mode of telling his tale works in such unforeseen powerful ways. Where one could think it would feel disjointed, it is in fact seamlessly sensational. Each character’s worlds are more deeply examined by having the focus shift between the two stories.

And caught in the middle, almost serving as the connection that holds the two worlds together is Mendes. It is the performance of her career. She dazzles as a woman torn between what is right and what is wrong, and then what is best for her child.

The Place Beyond the Pines Bradley Cooper

Cooper and Gosling serve as the film’s brilliant bookends. Gosling goes deep as a man that audiences would not normally cheer for, yet in his hands and with his searing charisma, Luke is someone who we collectively want to succeed.

Meanwhile, Cooper’s Avery is not a one note character, thanks to Cianfrance’s script and Cooper’s performance. He is as conflicted as Luke in so many ways. There are familial, community and personal expectations and they do not all jive. Through Cooper, we see that this is a character that is uncomfortable with fate, yet still manages to wrap himself in it.

Our The Place Beyond the Pines review can easily call this film a must-see. It is almost unfortunate that it is being released in limited release March 29 before going nationwide April 12. This is a film that firmly belongs in the midst of the Oscar season later in the year. But then again, having something this good in the early months of the year is something for which to be grateful.

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones author Cassandra Clare and the cast of her page-to-screen effort, including star Lily Collins, met Movie Fanatic at WonderCon for an exclusive chat about the upcoming film. Clare spoke to how the film can provide exposure to her story beyond how huge it already has become.

"It’s really intriguing and it’s really frightening too. There’s nothing like a movie that focuses this big lens onto your work that hasn’t been there before," Clare said.

She admitted her fans had their opinions about who should play who, but she wouldn’t have it any other way as Mortal Instruments fans are as passionate as they come. “They have opinions for everything and I love them for it,” Clare said. “I love that they’re so excited. I was flooded with emails that were either, ‘I want to be in the movie’ or ‘So and so should be in the movie.’”

Meanwhile, Collins lets us in on her thoughts on the most memorable moment for her as a part of this rapidly becoming-iconic series. She immediately credits the filmmakers for how she felt like she walked onto the pages of the book when she arrived on the set. "I love how the art department made all the sets feel true to the book,” Collins said.

She also appreciated the bonding with her castmates and filmmakers. “All of us really became one in making this movie.”

After her work in Mirror Mirror and now her starring role in this film, teased in the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones trailer, it is easy to see the passion the actress has for the genre. “I’ve always loved fantasy films. I love how they take me away to somewhere else. It’s not just fantasy that’s the big appeal with these movies -- it’s that they have heart.”

We also caught up with star Kevin Zegers, who portrays Alec Lightwood, as he explores what it was about this Mortal Instruments world that most compelled him.

"The biggest appeal was the character. I love this guy for whatever reason,” Zegers said. As soon as "action" was called, he immediately knew the book's secret to success. “Once we started shooting the movie, the world is great and it’s easy to see why the fans are crazy about it.”

Jamie Campbell Bower, who is fan favorite Jace Wayland, was just a little nervous about tackling a project that is so enormous in the world of popular culture. “I was terrified. There’s always a responsibility, even if it isn’t an adaptation to a popular book,” Bower said. “It’s a scary prospect, big time.”

For years, people have been asking: Will there be a Trainspotting sequel? And now we have our official answer!

Danny Boyle met us to talk about his latest thriller, teased in the Trance trailer, and given the rumors that a sequel to his 1996 smash hit Trainspotting is in the works, he gave us some firm details about why he seeks to return to the world he created and what fans of the cult smash can expect.

By the time audiences get to see Trainspotting 2, it will have been two decades since the first shocked the world. “That’s why we go back,” Boyle admitted. “That would be the premise of the film is that we take all the same actors playing the same parts and examine what has happened to them in 20 years.”

Trainspotting put Boyle and its star, Ewan McGregor, on the cinematic map in its story about life rooted in the drug scene of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It featured one of the more iconic scenes in recent film history. If you haven't seen it, we won’t spoil it, other than it features McGregor and a toilet. Enough said!

Stay with Movie Fanatic for our full Boyle interview April 3, where he tells us how on earth he managed to direct Trance and orchestrate the London Olympics opening ceremony simultaneously!

MGM is apparently very pleased with the way G.I. Joe: Retaliation did in its first four days, as they're already moving forward with plans for a third film.

G.I. Joe Retaliation Bruce Willis Still

G.I. Joe retaliation topped the box-office this weekend, and has already made $132 million worldwide. The decision last year to hold the release of the action sequel in order to convert it to 3D seems to be paying off.

Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street), and Bruce Willis star in the second film, which finds the Joes cast out of society and fighting to take down Cobra Commander.

The threequel is obviously in the very early stages of development. Stay tuned for more details as they unfold.

At this point in time, it is truly difficult to create a horror movie that causes audience's collective jaws to drop. From the early buzz and the debut trailer that just arrived for You’re Next… horror may have its next great flick.

Since You’re Next screened at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival, those who have seen it have caused quite a stir that has been impossible to ignore.

The film is a home invasion scary ride that stars Sharni Vinson (Step Up 3D) and follows what happens when her family goes on what appears to be an idyllic vacation. Before they can even start to relax, their vacation home is taken over by animal mask-sporting attackers.

Look for more from You’re Next as the film’s August 23 date inches closer.

Is it us, or is the horror genre getting a much needed shot in the arm? The buzz on the upcoming remake, teased in the Evil Dead trailer, sure illustrates that fact and the box office success of Mama and Sinister at the end of last year proves it.

This is the End: Seth Rogen, Danny McBride & Craig Robinson Talk Chaos Comedy

Hot on the heels of the This is the End red band trailer premiere, Movie Fanatic caught up with the writer, director and cast of the apocalyptic comedy – Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride at WonderCon.

Rogen and Goldberg talked reuniting with Franco after their work on Pineapple Express together. “It’s like getting back into old habits,” Goldberg said. “We get along with him and always have.”

“He was awesome,” Rogen interjected. “He destroys the movie -- all the guys in it.”

The story had been gestating for a while with these comic maestros. “It’s an old idea we had to have actors play themselves and have real (expletive) happen and that is violent and dangerous,” Goldberg said. “We also had the idea to make an apocalyptic movie of some type and we realized, why don’t we put these things together?”

Rogen also reported that it was fun to play a heightened version of himself -- all for laughs. “It was freeing, comedically it was fun to be shocking for the audience. It was fun to see how far the other guys would go and push it,” Rogen said.

McBride said it felt like a normal day hanging with the guys. “It’s like just playing in your backyard,” he said. He also admitted that he wouldn’t mind the end of the world. “People have been talking about the end of the world for years and we’d get to be the lucky ones to experience it. It’s pretty awesome.”

And we asked Robinson, if the end of the world was happening for real, which of his co-stars would he save and why? “I guess Seth, because he’s standing right there.”

This is the End opens June 12 and for more, check out the first This is the End trailer.

We all know Superman as the Big Blue Boyscout, the do-gooder superhero who works within the confines of the law to keep the planet safe.

But sometimes it's easier just to get in, get out. Superman abandons his principles in this funny comedy sketch from Kill Bosby Comedy, produced by our very own Micah Gordon. There is some cursing, so it's a tad NSFW.

The Superman franchise is getting rebooted in the upcoming film Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as Clark Kent. Cavill's Superman may also appear in an upcoming Justice League of America movie, though the future of that project is currently up in the air.

Diane Lane, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburn, Russell Crowe (Les Miserables), and Christopher Meloni also star. Man of Steel will hit theaters June 14.

Trance Exclusive: James McAvoy Explores Art of Heist

James McAvoy stars in Trance, which as shown in the Trance trailer is not your usual heist film.

McAvoy stars as a high end art auctioneer who may or may not be involved in the stealing of a painting worth over $25 million. You see, the problem is, because of a blow to the head he took during the robbery... he cannot remember a thing. Both the crooks and the cops want to know what's inside his head.

With the help of a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson), he could unlock the key to the entire mystery.

We caught up with McAvoy -- who talked to us from London -- in an exclusive video interview where he explored how one gets into the mindset of a character that doesn't remember a thing.

Given the rich history of heist movies over the years, McAvoy also gives us his picks for favorite heist movie(s).

"Thomas Crown Affair is an incredible heist movie. It’s incredibly cool and sexy,” McAvoy said. “I even like both versions. I like the Pierce Brosnan movie. I’m not going to say it’s better than anything with Steve McQueen."

As he was concluding, he recalled one more that he adores. "And I’d also say The Italian Job. Man," McAvoy added, "it’s just brilliant.”

And be sure to see what McAvoy had to say to us exclusively about his upcoming work on X-Men: Days of Future Past!
