The Great Gatsby Synopsis:

From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker created his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.

The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby

Academy Award nominee DiCaprio (Django Unchained, Aviator) plays Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire starring as Nick Carraway; Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Joel Edgerton as Daisy and Tom Buchanan; Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke as Myrtle and George Wilson; and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. Indian film legend Amitabh Bachchan will play the role of Meyer Wolfsheim.

Oscar nominee Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) directed the film in 3D from a screenplay co-written with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce, based on Fitzgerald’s novel. Luhrmann produced, along with Catherine Martin, Academy Award winner Douglas Wick (Gladiator), Lucy Fisher and Catherine Knapman. The executive producers are Academy Award winner Barrie M. Osborne (Lord of the Rings – Return of the King), Shawn JAY Z Carter, and Bruce Berman.

Two-time Academy Award winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge!) designed as well as produced. The editors are Matt Villa, Jason Ballantine and Jonathan Redmond, and the director of photography is Simon Duggan. The music is by Craig Armstrong, with Anton Monsted serving as executive music supervisor and co-producer.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, in association with A&E Television, a Bazmark/Red Wagon Entertainment Production, a Film by Baz Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby. Opening May 10, 2013, the film will be distributed in 3D and 2D by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

The Guilt Trip DVD Exclusive Clip: Anne Fletcher Goes Behind the Scenes

As The Guilt Trip lands on DVD and Blu-Ray this week, Movie Fanatic sat down with the film’s director, Anne Fletcher (The Proposal), for an exclusive interview where she talked about the magic of the film’s stars, Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand.

The Guilt Trip DVD

As shown in The Guilt Trip trailer, the film is the story of a son and his mother, who hit the road on a hilarious and heartfelt journey.

Movie Fanatic also is premiering below an exclusive clip from the home video release featuring behind-the-scenes footage of screenwriter Dan Fogelman helping Fletcher find the film’s true voice as star Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand nail the mother-son road trip comedy.

Movie Fanatic: Years from now, what will stick out the most from your time with Barbra Streisand?

Anne Fletcher: It took me a year of courting her to get her to say yes to this movie. In that whole year, I got to know the person. What I love about her -- this woman is a pro. She does not phone it in. She’s so prepared -- you can’t throw her curve balls. She’s ready for anything. She has embodied this character so wholly, she can go anywhere. I say that because there have been times in my directing life and other parts of my life where I’ve seen these people who we love and adore, who just show up at work and maybe sometimes they don’t even know their lines. Barbra still cares and cares so deeply about what she does for a living.

Movie Fanatic: Was making a road trip movie where you never hit the road tricky? I mean, you cannot tell!

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen in The Guilt Trip

Anne Fletcher: [Laughs] If I had my druthers, I would have hit the road. I love things to be as realistic as possible. But, we couldn’t. I wanted Barbra and she did not want to leave Los Angeles. And if Barbra didn’t do the movie, none of us were doing the movie. What comes with that is that Barbra says, “I don’t want to leave Los Angeles if I don’t have to.” We did everything we could to make that happen. It was my compromise because she was the most important thing for me. Was it tricky? Not really. For The Proposal, we shot in Massachusetts for Alaska.

Movie Fanatic: Are you kidding?

Anne Fletcher: [Laughs] I’m not kidding! So, I had done that already and enjoyed fooling the audience thoroughly. I know it worked because people went on vacations to Alaska because of the movie [laughs]! That is such a compliment to the visual effects department. For me, it’s scary. Bad visual effects can blow the thing right open. The Guilt Trip is a story about two people. There are no hijinx. It’s two talking heads on an emotional journey together. The visual effects had to be spot on so you wouldn’t not buy it. It had to be real.

Movie Fanatic: I think Seth Rogen is a true renaissance man. We’ve seen the dramatic part him in 50/50 and his comic timing throughout his career. His stellar writing is teased in This is The End trailer. What is the secret of the success of Seth Rogen?

Anne Fletcher: He’s still so young, he’s still discovering it. He’s got an incredibly brilliant mind and a great sense of what he finds funny. He’s incredibly smart. There’s something he does that touches the masses. Is it he’s an every day man that people connect to his comedy? I don’t know. His comedy is impeccable, and his dramatic pieces -- like he did in this movie opposite Barbra, he’s got a vulnerability that he allows to come through that is intoxicating for people to watch. I think Seth is on his way to conquering the world. And you know what? He’s hungry.

Movie Fanatic: What struck you the most about The Guilt Trip script?

Anne Fletcher: You always read things and you either have this door in your brain open as to whether or not you relate to it. Are you able to tell this story? Dan Fogelman wrote this after taking a road trip with his mother. That’s my relationship with my mother. My mother loves so much and it’s a beautiful quality and an awful quality at the same time. When I read the script, I knew who these people are.

Check out what else Fletcher had to say in this exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the extras section of the DVD and Blu-Ray of The Guilt Trip.

Fantastic Four Reboot: Michael B. Jordan as Human Torch?

Earlier this week, we reported that Allison Williams, of HBO's Girls, was in the running to play Invisible Woman in the new Fantastic Four.

Now, it looks like another actor has joined the reboot's casting wish list. Michael B. Jordan is being considered for the role of Human Torch.

Michael B. Jordan Pic

Jordan is best known for his role on the TV show Friday Night Lights, as well as for the film Chronicle.

The role was portrayed by Chris Evans (who went on to play Captain America) in the 2005 and 2007 films. Jordan's casting would mark a change of the character from white to black, which is bound to anger some of the franchise's more particular fans.

Ultimately, though, black actors portraying white characters is picking up steam as a way to expand the reach, relevance, and modernity of these properties, and that's a very good thing. And Jordan is a talented up-and-comer who could be a great choice for the role.

Fantastic Four is set to premiere March 6, 2015.

Bradley Cooper (The Hangover Part III) recently left the production of Jane Got a Gun, which has been undergoing some massive personal changes of late. It turns out that the reason he left is because he got a chance to work with Steven Spielberg, and you just don't pass that up.

Cooper will star in Spielberg's new film American Sniper.

Recently, Robert Downey, Jr. announced that he may retire from Iron Man in order to pursue more intellectual films. It seems that Pinocchio counts.

Downey, Jr. is developing a live-action Pinocchio film with Warner Bros. He has spoken to Tim Burton about directing, and more recently, to Ben Stiller.

While the plan was originally to make a darker film along Tim Burton's aesthetic lines, Downey's idea seems to have shifted, causing him to consider his Tropic Thunder director for the gig.

Downey would play Geppetto, though no further details have been released.

Last year, Guillermo Del Toro was working on an animated Pinocchio film, though that has been sidelined to make room for other projects.

Iron Man 3 Review: Robert Downey Jr. is a Marvel

$
0
0

Iron Man 3 arrives in theaters the same weekend where a year before found The Avengers breaking box office records. Would you believe that this third film in the Iron Man franchise is even better than that wickedly successful film, and thus can easily be crowned the most astounding superhero film since The Dark Knight?

Robert Downey Jr. Stars As Iron Man 3

It appears as if the creative team behind the series learned a few lessons from the misstep that was Iron Man 2 and perhaps in the process we have discovered what it was about The Avengers that worked so well. Sure, that green monster otherwise known as The Hulk was a huge standout. But, it was Robert Downey Jr. and his charm as Tony Stark/Iron Man that carried the day.

And now that he has his own film again, the actor and the role further show how it is a match made in cinematic heaven.

There's a humor and an impeccable sense of timing that is inescapable in Downey's portrayal of the billionaire arms dealer/playboy. He may be born to be Sherlock Holmes, but it is a once in a century moment in Hollywood where an actor and a role become synonymous for their excellence.

As Downey has said throughout the Iron Man 3 press tour, a superhero movie is only as good as its villain and in this latest Marvel Studios incarnation, Ben Kingsley knocks it out of the park as The Mandarin. He is pure evil, driven by… well, you’ll have to see the film to get that answer! There are twists and turns in this film that simply cannot be revealed in even the simplest of summations without ruining it for the audience.

Just know this: It is a brilliant use of an actor in Kingsley and is as well written a role as a superhero or even an action movie, for that matter, has seen in decades.

Ben Kingsley Iron Man 3

What also is a welcome surprise are the expanded roles of Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Both actors are stellar, time has proved that, and Iron Man 3 allows them to join in on the action, humor and joy that is this particular franchise. Again, don’t want to give away too much, but Paltrow even gets to don the Iron Man suit!

After a series of terrorist attacks, Iron Man swings into action by calling out The Mandarin and even, as seen in this Iron Man 3 trailer, gives his home address. Stark is inviting a full-on attack because, as he says, this is now about revenge. Yes, the attack comes and Stark has to flee.

When Stark flees the assault on his home, he lands in Tennessee and another joy hits the screen, the unexpected talents of Ty Simpkins. The plot here allows Stark to "start from the beginning." The Dark Knight Rises attempted to do this, and failed in the process. You can knock your hero down to where he has to cull his power once again and save the world. But where it felt forced in the final Batman movie, here in Iron Man 3 with Downey and writer-director Shane Black wielding the plot and power… it is a marvel. Pun intended.

Also, fans of the Marvel world may wonder how this first film out of the gate after The Avengers would handle that film and the universe of the superhero collective.

When Stark lands in the beat up suit in Tennessee, he has to answer a myriad of questions from the little boy played by Simpkins. It is here where we get some congruency with last summer's The Avengers. As Stark says in thisIron Man 3 clip, "Things haven't been the same since New York." It is through the scenes with the talented young thespian that we find out why.

Gwyneth Paltrow Robert Downey Jr. Iron Man 3

In the end, the hiring of director Black to take over the helming duties for Jon Favreau (who still stars as Stark's loyal sidekick) is a stroke of brilliance by Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios. Much as Downey and Black combined to make explosive action and dialogue in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, so too do they with Iron Man 3.

We know there will be a The Avengers 2, but will there be an Iron Man 4? With the proof in the pudding that is Iron Man 3, we can only hope so as this series shows how to do superheroes right. Our Iron Man 3 review can firmly state that the film may be the best superhero film... ever.
