Robert Downey, Jr.'s Iron Man Future: Will he be Around for The Avengers 3?

Last weekend, Iron Man 3 achieved the second-biggest opening ever, earning $175.3 million. That's second only to The Avengers.

That means the two biggest openings ever were for movies that starred Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark. It comes as no surprise, then, that Marvel is scrambling to negotiate Downey's return to the franchise, with his contract having run out.

Tony Stark Iron Man 3

According to THR, Downey met with Marvel Studio heads on Monday to celebrate IM3's success and to discuss this very issue. Downey has stated that he is interested in retiring from the character and pursuing less superheroey projects.

The negotiations are primarily to ensure Downey's return for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, which will mark the ends of Marvel Phase 2 and Phase 3, respectively.

As for the future of the Iron Man standalone series, that seems a lot less likely. Marvel definitely has an interest in getting the actor to sign a new multi-picture deal, as Downey is to Marvel Studios as Babe Ruth is to Yankee Stadium.

Of course, as Yankee Stadium has proven, even sanctuaries built on the shoulders of immortal giants eventually get torn down and replaced with newer models that have a Hard Rock Cafe in them.

It seems likely that Downey will appear in The Avengers 2, and probably The Avengers 3 also, if in a reduced role. But as for Iron Man 4, we'll have to wait and see.

Mama DVD Review: One Evil Mom!

Just in time for Mother's Day, Mama arrives on DVD and Blu-Ray! When Mama arrived in theaters, it shot to number one and stayed there for two weeks. The Guillermo del Toro produced horror film stars Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain as you’ve never seen her before.

Mama DVD

As teased in the Mama trailer, the story follows two small girls who are abandoned deep in the woods when their father disappears under suspicious circumstances. Two years later, a hunter finds them and they are subsequently reunited with their uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones). He, along with his girlfriend Annabel (Chastain), have the daunting task of reintroducing the “wild” girls into the world.

The thing is… they didn’t leave the woods alone. An evil spirit the kids call Mama has come along, wreaking havoc for all those who stand in the way of her and those girls.

Movie Fanatic quite enjoyed the film, as reported in our theatrical Mama review. It is haunting and amazingly original, especially for a genre that can be quite stale. Chastain is a vision, further continuing her hot streak. But the real star here is the special effects -- that give us a maternal influence that is utterly horrifying.

The Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack that we received is chock full of fascinating extras that takes viewers inside the magic of del Toro’s hot horror touch.

Jessica Chastain Stars in Mama

As we stated above, the special effects that create the creature that is Mama is astounding. That wildly creative process is explored in the bonus feature Matriarchal Secrets, a powerful inside look at how the being that is Mama came to be. In other home video releases, the deleted scenes feature can be mundane. But, on the Mama DVD and Blu-Ray combo pack, they give fascinating details to the story… but make sure to witness them after seeing the entire film!

Mama is based on a short film, and luckily for viewers, that is included on the DVD and Blu-Ray, along with commentary by co-writer/director Andy Muschietti and producer/co-writer Barbara Muschietti -- who also combined forces on the full length feature.

Fans of del Toro (soon to present his Pacific Rim to audiences this summer) will also appreciate the exclusive interview contained on the package with the master filmmaker, who explores his passion for horror films that is evident on every frame of Mama.

Big Hero 6 Footage Previews San Fransokyo

We sometimes forget just how much Disney is capable of doing. They own most of the Marvel universe, as well as the Star Wars universe, and they can do anything with those properties.

Including animation.

Disney Animation is taking on its first Marvel property in Big Hero 6, a team first created in 1998. Take a look at the first footage from the Big Hero 6 movie, which gives us a glimpse at the very cool-looking hybrid city of San Fransokyo:

The comic follows Hiro Hamada, young robotics prodigy with a robot companion BayMax, who joins forces with a superheroes team in Tokyo.

Don Hall is directing the movie, which changed locations to the fake hybrid city in order to strike a balance between the "real world" setting of most Marvel properties and the more fantastical side of Disney.

Big Hero 6 will premiere November 7, 2014, though it may not technically count as "Marvel Phase 2."

Michael Shannon Exclusive: Talking General Zod & The Iceman

Michael Shannon is astounding The Iceman. In fact, Movie Fanatic believes that if this film were released later in the year, say in October, he would be a lock for an Oscar nomination. What is so fascinating is how the actor went directly from filming Man of Steel on a Friday, where he portrays the villain General Zod, to Monday morning inhabiting the real-life mob killer teased in The Iceman trailer.

Shannon met Movie Fanatic recently for an exclusive interview where he talked how nice it was to film The Iceman after closing Man of Steel. Shannon stars as General Zod in the Superman reboot and welcomed the thespian challenge of moving from that movie villain to another shade of evil with his portrayal of the mob assassin he plays in The Iceman.

Man of Steel was a six month shoot. By the end of that… you get to the point where you’re ready to do something else for a little while,” Shannon said. “Towards the end of Man of Steel, we were doing a lot of technical stuff like stunt-y stuff. That stuff is fun for a while -- then it gets a little bit monotonous. I was ready to get back and actually do a scene where I talk to somebody.”

Shannon portrays Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, a for hire killer who was responsible for hundreds of deaths across decades. Meanwhile, he had a family and wife (Winona Ryder) at home who were all completely unaware of his murderous vocation.

There was an award-winning HBO documentary that chronicled the real life killer and Shannon found a “fountain of life” from the doc. “I spent a lot of time watching that,” Shannon added. "I got the unedited version!"

The Iceman is in theaters now and Man of Steel lands June 14.
