Peeples: Craig Robinson on Why Meeting the Parents is So Funny

$

As The Office closes its doors, life could not be better for one of its stars, Craig Robinson. He headlines the ensemble comedy Peeples and Movie Fanatic caught up with the man who has five (yes, you read that right) movies hitting theaters in 2013 to talk about the family comedy that is one part Meet the Parents, and all hilarious and heartfelt.

Craig Robinson Peeples

Teased in the Peeples trailer, the story follows Robinson’s Wade as he embarks on a surprise visit to meet his girlfriend Grace (Kerry Washington) and meet her parents. Only thing is Grace has not told her family about Wade. There is something innately hilarious about the meet the parents concept, yet in Peeples, it is also fresh, wildly original and shows why Robinson is a comic star for the future.

Movie Fanatic: What is it about somebody meeting a partner’s parents that is so ripe for comedy, and frankly drama?

Craig Robinson: It’s a human thing. You got the person that you’re in love with and you got the people that raised them. The parents and family are going to be there forever. You want to be part of their forever, so, you’re introducing yourself to be that. It’s a natural judgmental process. It’s hard to ease into that. There’s usually a, “I’m bringing somebody home!” Wade didn’t even get that. He just popped in. “Hey, how you doing? Now, love me!”

Movie Fanatic: You have a background in teaching young kids, was it nice to play somebody who shares that passion for working with young children?

Craig Robinson: I love kids. I love working with kids. I don’t have any of my own. They’re a whole different energy when all is said and done. I loved that Wade was a child therapist, in the script. Then, once I got attached to the project, he taught kids to deal with their problems through music.

Movie Fanatic: How did you find your way to comedy from being a teacher in Chicago? Was it something that was in you that you didn’t listen to?

Craig Robinson: Before I started teaching, I was in college, that’s where I got my calling to do comedy. It literally chose me. I was on a path to be a musician. I went to college to be a musician and writing songs. Out of nowhere, I just became obsessed with comedians and comedy and figuring out the tools. I remember writing a note to myself that read, “You are going to be a great comedian.” And I crossed out the words "going to be." It because my passion. But the music stayed with it. Music is my partner. Music is always with me, whether it’s in a script or not. It just shows up. Just like in Peeples.

Movie Fanatic: Was it hard to get through performing the song in the movie without laughing?

Craig Robinson: It was… the stuff you see with the kids was recorded in a studio. But, the stuff on the piano where I’m playing for David (Alan Grier), I did a few different versions of that. But, there were many, many moments in the movie that I totally cracked up -- especially with David Alan Grier.

Craig Robinson Kerry Washington Peeples

Movie Fanatic: Speaking of David, I think this is the most amazing performance we’ve seen from him in years.

Craig Robinson: Such a layered performance. He’s obviously a different person when he’s with me. He’s different with his wife -- he’s got this flirtation thing when he’s with Grace. The way he is with his son. David just swam through all these different faces of Virgil Peeples like it was nothing. He’s a genius. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time. He was a staple in my house growing up. I can’t wait for my family to see this movie because this is going to blow them away more than anything -- that I am in a movie with David Alan Grier.

Movie Fanatic: Did you take away anything from working with this man you admired?

Craig Robinson: I have been stealing from him for years [laughs]. With him, I feel like I’m playing in a jazz band. If I’m playing lead and he comes in, I’m backing up to play the piano.

Movie Fanatic: Tina Gordon Chism, your writer-director… what was she like as a first time director. For you as an actor, what kind of resource is it having your director also be the writer?

Craig Robinson: I’ve worked with Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, Larry David and Steve Carell, all who write and direct. It’s that rarity. Not only did she write and direct it, she lived this movie. She was with a guy where she found out all the secrets of his family that they have and stuff like that. It definitely gives her a tunnel vision, which is what she needed for this movie. Us all coming together for this movie… it was my first time leading a movie. It was her first time directing a movie. We had Diahann Carroll … Melvin Van Peebles … we all had a higher purpose.

Another photo from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past, courtesy of the very active Twitter account of director Bryan Singer.

It shows James McAvoy as Professor X, who has undergone a very Doobie Brothersy shift in style from First Class (or as Singer himself captions the tweet: "Serpico"). Take a look:

James McAvoy X-Men: Days of Future Past

McAvoy and Patrick Stewart both return to the role of Professor X, as Days of Future Past combines both the original timeline and the prequel timeline. When a cataclysmic event threatens the planet, Kitty Pryde must travel between the timelines to save it.

Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence (Catching Fire), Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Omar Sy, and Peter Dinklage also star.

The film premieres July 18, 2014. Check out some more X-Men: Days of Future Past set photos.

Fifty Shades of Grey Director: Joe Wright a Frontrunner

When it comes to directing Fifty Shades of Grey, Joe Wright just may be "Mr. Wright." Get it?

According to THR, Wright, who has directed such adaptation as Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and Ana Karenina, has become a front-runner for the position.

Fifty Shades of Grey

There is no doubt that Fifty would be a slight change in tone for Wright, who until now has done almost exclusively period dramas.

No deal has yet been made, and other names previously mentioned for the role include Gus Van Sant and Bennett Miller. If Wright signs on, the biggest question will become: Who will play Christian and Anastasia?

Peeples Review: Surprising Summer Fun

$
0
0

When it comes to comedies, we may be looking back on Peeples as the surprise hit of the summer. The film, from writer and first time director Tina Gordon Chism, never plays its heartfelt humor to the lower ends of its audience's intelligence.

David Alan Grier Craig Robinson Peeples

As even evident in the Peeples trailer, the film gains its strength from how real its characters are and how the situations in this situational comedy are universally relevant.

Craig Robinson (Hot Tub Time Machine) nails his first leading man role as Wade. He is living what he thinks is a blissful life with his live-in love, Grace. Kerry Washington continues her hit streak as Grace and the Scandal star crafts a soul who is equally a daddy's girl and an independent woman.

See, when David Alan Grier is your father and S. Epatha Merkerson is your mother, those traits are hardly surprising. Knowing how judgmental her federal judge father is, she has failed to mention she's dating a man -- much less living with him -- who makes his living as a musician for kids.

That becomes a problem and our movie hits its groove when Grace heads home solo for the weekend and Wade surprises her by showing up to finally meet the parents.

Given this premise, Peeples could march to the pre-laid tracks of other hit films of its ilk, like... well, Meet the Parents. But with Chism at the helm guiding this charming film, it mostly avoids stereotype.

Chism’s background certainly has helped her with Peeples. The writer-director cut her teeth as a writer for The Cosby Show, and her work as screenwriter on Drumline and ATL has certainly prepared her for the big time as a cinematic auteur. She knows family comedy and familial dynamics and weaves a web of it in Peeples that is unexpectedly rich and robust.

Kerry Washington Craig Robinson David Alan Grier Peeples

But, since the formula is exactly that, formula, Peeples can’t quite help itself on a few occasions finding a familiar feel. There is the predictable final clash between father, daughter and wanna-be fiance that feels like it was literally ripped off from Meet the Parents, complete with Wade going home with his tail between his legs.

How to avoid such cliches, we’re not sure… after all the film has to have its conflict. But there had to be some other way to have our protagonist leave the scene, while his love figures out that daddy was too overbearing without it feeling like a sitcom repeat.

It is undeniable that Peeples possesses an innate attraction and should do quite well in a summer movie season that is awash in spectacle (The Great Gatsby) and superheroes (Iron Man 3). And with the landscape void of any kind of family film fun, Peeples scores immensely on many levels.

Iron Man 3: Don Cheadle Weighs in on Iron Patriot vs. War Machine

Don Cheadle is back in Iron Man 3 for his second straight film as Colonel James Rhodes, who also pulls double duty inside his own Iron Man suit as Iron Patriot and of course, War Machine.

Don Cheadle Iron Patriot Still

Cheadle visited with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to talk about the number one movie in the world that is breaking box office records and chimes in on the debate as to what is the more apt title for Rhodes’ alter ego… Iron Patriot or War Machine?

The actor also dishes why Robert Downey Jr. is so impeccably cast as Tony Stark/Iron Man and how it is simply one of those serendipitous moments where actor meets destiny. Also, Cheadle lets us know that before he ever wanted to be an actor, he wanted to be a stuntman. So, his boyish joy at being able to do the stunts teased in the Iron Man 3 trailer is palpable!

Movie Fanatic: Are there any big differences you noticed on a Shane Black set versus a Jon Favreau set?

Don Cheadle: Really, what we’re all really trying to do is to hang on for dear life in this huge undertaking. Shane, obviously, having co-written the script knew where all the bodies were buried -- so to speak -- and we didn’t have to go anywhere else for the discussions about the scenes and what we wanted to do. It was a really collaborate effort. Many of the days, we were all in a trailer before we got to the set, pulling apart a scene and putting it back together.

Movie Fanatic: Robert is perfect as Iron Man/Tony Stark. I don’t think we could have ever asked for a better one. Having a front row seat to his magic for the last two movies, why do you think he’s so perfect for that role?

Don Cheadle: It’s one of those situations where it’s a marriage between an actor and a character that just works. His particular wit and facile mind is something that works.

Movie Fanatic: Which moniker to you prefer… Iron Patriot or War Machine?

Don Cheadle: The fanboys have come up to me who know the mythology of the Marvel characters and told me that Iron Patriot is actually somebody else. How did that happen? It’s how it always works in the Marvel world. In the comic books, James is a Marine, and in the movie universe, he’s in the Air Force. These things change and shift according to the mythology that specific to the films and I feel like James does in the movie. It doesn’t matter to me what the name is, as long as he gets in on the action. You can call him whatever you want, just don’t call him late to dinner.

Robert Downey, Jr. Don Cheadle Iron Man 3

Movie Fanatic: [Laughs] When you play someone who is in the military, even in a fantastical world such as Iron Man, is there an added pressure to get it right to salute the men and women who wear the uniform?

Don Cheadle: The people who are serving want to make sure you’re not embarrassing them. But, I think that when you’re taking to a movie, especially a movie that’s like this, that we know what we’re really trying to do and we’re trying to entertain. We’re trying to be exciting and innovative. It’s not always about the reality of it. It’s about bringing a personality and an energy to the part. While you don’t want to do anything that will have people going, “That’s ridiculous.” The bigger job is trying to do something that people will find really fun.

Movie Fanatic: There’s an incredible amount of great humor in these films. Is that one of the appeals of this franchise for you?

Don Cheadle: Absolutely. I think if you didn’t have that, if the movie took itself seriously and all the situations were so weighted, I don’t think it would carry through the film in the same way.

Movie Fanatic: You’ve had TV success, most recently with House of Lies, and tremendous film success. Is there a huge difference working in the two mediums?

Don Cheadle: At the end of the day when you’re down there doing it, you’re trying to do the same things. You’re trying to find the truthful moments and let the other things take care of themselves. It’s tricky on a movie like this because much of the time you don’t know what you’re looking at. You have to rely on the special effects team and the director to help you be in the pocket. But, the scenes with Robert and what we need from one another, that’s pretty much the same job as anywhere else.

Iron Man 3 Iron Patriot Armor

Movie Fanatic: Actors have differing opinions about working with green screens, but to me it seems as if it would play upon that childhood imagination thing. Do you enjoy that part of the job?

Don Cheadle: It’s a little bit more nerve wracking. If you’re in your backyard and you’re eight years old and you’re playing… no one is going to see it [laughs]. It’s not going to be on a huge screen and forever cemented. You want to get it right. So much is out of our control and so much of it happens after we’re gone. There’s a certain amount of trust that is required.

Movie Fanatic: It may be hard to pick, but was there a best day on filming Iron Man 3?

Don Cheadle: I really loved all the time where I got to do the stunts. All the cable work, and working with the stunt team and being able to be outside of the suit and just be physical. I’m a physical actor. That is wish fulfillment for me. I was never scared. I knew I was safe. Actually, I wanted to be a stuntman before I wanted to be an actor. When I came home from the Iron Man 3 set and I have bumps and bruises, it felt like war stripes.

This Is the End stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride and Jay Baruchel have released a new video (below) where they are just begging to be liked -- on Facebook that is…

See, the guys behind the crazy-looking comedy have taken to the social media titan in an effort to get their film to cross the 800,000 like threshold. And if they achieve that feat, they promise to post videos of them doing some pretty awesome activities.

As the likes get higher, the guys will post videos of themselves doing things that are exponentially more embarrassing, er… funny!

Help This Is The End get to 500,000 likes and McBride will wax Rogen’s back. 650,000 likes will unlock a video of Baruchel and McBride sharing a strand of spaghetti, a la Lady and the Tramp! But, the mother of all videos is unleashed if the This Is the End page gets 800,000 likes! We get to see Rogen paint Franco in the nude. Head over to the This Is the End Facebook page and get "liking!"

As teased in the This Is the End trailer, the film -- also starring Craig Robinson -- features the comic actors portraying versions of themselves as Franco throws a bash and all the guys get into all sorts of silliness. Then… Armageddon hits and all hell breaks loose.

This Is the End hits theaters June 12 and to say Movie Fanatic is eager to witness this wildly creative idea come to life… is a gross understatement.
