Winona Ryder Exclusive: The Iceman Star Cometh

0
0

Winona Ryder has charmed us for decades and with her role in The Iceman, she may have found her most challenging part yet. As shown in The Iceman trailer, she portrays the wife of a mob assassin played by Michael Shannon, who spent over 20 years raising his two daughters -- completely unaware of what he was really doing to make a living.

Movie Fanatic met Ryder for an exclusive video interview where she talked about her experience working with Shannon, who is blowing up lately -- especially with his upcoming turn as the villain General Zod in Man of Steel.

"It’s great to see him getting the recognition and respect. But, I have to say since Bug -- within the acting community -- we are so happy for him. He’s one of those guys who is consistently good,” Ryder said. “I am so grateful to see how he works. You honestly do not what he’s going to do.”

We first admired Ryder in Lucas and then she made her name with stellar work in Heathers, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. She has been on quite a role of late with her turn in The Iceman, but also Black Swan, The Dilemma and her re-teaming with Tim Burton in Frankenweenie. Movie Fanatic wondered what a film has to say to her for Ryder to say “yes.”

“Generally speaking, there are certain people that it’s a no-brainer,” Ryder said. “For certain people I would read the phone book!” Think Burton is one of those people?!

Pierce Brosnan, joined by his Love Is All You Need co-star Trine Dyrholm, met Movie Fanatic for an exclusive video interview where the superstar talked about what it was that made him want to join the Danish-produced romantic comedy. Hint: She’s sitting right next to him!

"I was in love with Trine before I got to this moment. I saw her in In A Better World and she just captivated me,” Brosnan said.

As seen in the Love Is All You Need trailer, the film follows two families as they converge on an Italian villa for a wedding of two young lovers. The man who was once James Bond also shared what he thought it was about the institution of a wedding that makes for great cinema.

Will Smith is in talks to star in an upcoming remake of The Wild Bunch.

The 1969 Western film from Sam Peckinpah featured an all-star ensemble cast, and centered around a group of aging outlaws who plan one last job on the Mexican border.

The remake has been in the works for a while, with a script set that moves the story into modern times. Late director Tony Scott was attached to the film, but since his death, the project has been put on hold.

Now, it's looking like Warner Bros. is interested in re-developing the film as a vehicle for Smith. It could be great to see an ensemble cast assembled around him, however.

Smith can next be seen in After Earth, premiering May 31. Watch the latest After Earth clip for a look.

After Summit Entertainment recently premiered the Now You See Me opening sequence, Movie Fanatic now has a new clip featuring the magic trick at the heart of the ensemble comic drama. The spot features the Four Horsemen, the magic troupe that is comprised of Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco.

The quartet performs an illusion where they rob a bank in a foreign country and then shower the money on their audience. Something tells me, they take a little for themselves in the process.

Now You See Me also stars Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Caine. Look for the film from director Louis Leterrier when it premieres May 31. Intrigued? Check out the Now You See Me trailer!

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III DVD Review: Charlie Sheen is Sensational

0
0

Charlie Sheen has made a career of late playing characters that are not too far off from his own persona. He made hundreds of millions on Two and a Half Men and hasn’t done too badly with his work on FX’s Anger Management. In his latest film, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, the character is a little different… but still very much in the Sheen wheelhouse.

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III lands on DVD and Blu-Ray and is a fantastic opportunity for fans of not only Sheen, but also filmmaker Roman Coppola and stars Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman to discover as unique of a tale as was released in 2012.

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III DVD

The A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III trailer barely scratches the surface of the brilliant originality that is the visually masterful film. But, what it does do is give the audience a taste of what to expect from the work of a recent Academy Award nominee (Coppola for Original Screenplay for Moonrise Kingdom).

In many ways, and this should not be surprising given Coppola’s collaboration with the filmmaker, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III feels like a Wes Anderson movie. And that is not such a bad thing, is it?

Sheen is a wildly popular artist, whose work is highly coveted by musicians and hipsters alike. His best friend, a comedian played by Schwartzman, has a new album coming out and needs his BFF to craft a cover worthy of his Lenny Bruce-type stand-up. Swan is awash in self-loathing and self medicating after losing his girlfriend because he could not tame his ways (sounds like Sheen, no?).

The film uses numerous storytelling techniques including animation and imagery that can best be described as surreal. As we stated in our theatrical A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III review, Sheen has never been better and we wish more had turned out to see the film. Now that it is out on home video… hopefully that will happen.

Charlie Sheen Bill Murray A Glimpse Into the Mind of Charles Swan III

The actor proves why producers give him chance after chance, even in the face of his own personal demons. His work is astounding in this film and has nuances that should firmly establish him on the A-list. But if we know Sheen, he made the movie for his friend Coppola and will be content making sitcoms for the foreseeable future.

When it comes to the DVD and Blu-Ray extras, this package is a little light. The audio commentary by writer-director Coppola gives a glimpse into the mind that is the offspring of a legendary filmmaker. The son of Francis illustrates such a command of the art form of film that is expected, given his upbringing, yet is refreshing that it is so firmly planted in originality.

The “making of” featurette is a bit drawn out, but the big surprise is the bonus feature A Glimpse Into the Mind of Charles White. It is a documentary that takes a look at the artist who inspired the film in the first place. It is worth the price of the DVD or Blu-Ray alone.

The adaptation of the fairytale-themed stage musical Into the Woods is in the casting stage.

Last month, Johnny Depp (The Lone Ranger) and Meryl Streep signed on to star. Now, Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jake Gyllenhaal are in talks to join the cast.

  • Jake Gyllenhaal at Source Code Premiere

The film will follow a baker and his wife who seek out a witch who cursed them to be childless. Along the way, they run into several famous fairytale characters, drawing mainly from Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel.

Chicago director Rob Marshall will direct the film, with music and lyrics by Steven Sondheim.

Chef Adds Scarlett Johansson

For the last few weeks, we've been hearing that Robert Downey, Jr. wants to leave Iron Man to pursuit indie films. First up will be a film called Chef, from his IM and IM2 director Jon Favreau.

Today, Scarlett Johansson has joined the cast of Chef, completing the Marvel trifecta.

Scarlett Johansson Attends Golden Globes

Favreau will also star in the film, as a chef who loses his job. In order to regain his passion and win back his family, he opens a food truck.

Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, and Bobby Cannavale will also star.

Favreau's Chef is competing for the name with another movie that's in production from director John Wells, with Bradley Cooper (The Hangover Part III) attached to star. Both films are seeking funding at the Cannes Film Festival, and the confusion will surely cause one of them to change titles.

Star Trek Into Darkness Review: J.J. Abrams Ups the Ante

0
0

Sequels are always meant to raise the stakes on the original and Star Trek Into Darkness scores on that front. Yet, this particular film in this franchise, could easily tread on territory that has already been traveled by the series. Just a little cryptic, no?

Chris Pine Zachary Quinto in Star Trek Into Darkness

How that is handled will be the key to whether the film is solid or a bust. Breathe easy Trek fans -- our Star Trek Into Darkness review can firmly state that J.J. Abrams' latest effort boldly goes where no man has gone before and is a thrill ride to remember.

Sorry for the mysterious references, but to spill any of those beans would be firmly in spoiler land. But, what we can tell you is Abrams took the promise he gave audiences with his 2009 Star Trek and added layers upon layers of rich storyline, increased camaraderie between the Enterprise crew, a much more villainous villain (even as Eric Bana was no slouch), a much wider scope and at the same time, brought the danger to a palpable level that you can feel in your bones.

The story begins with Captain Kirk (the expertly cast Chris Pine, who captures the William Shatner Kirk swagger with his own flair) leading his crew on a mapping mission. As per usual, knowing the character’s wild independent streak, he takes the mission a step further and is punished back at Starfleet headquarters because of it. He is stripped of his command, Pike (Bruce Greenwood) is returned to the Enterprise’s captain chair and the crew is re-assigned to other vessels.

Except our villain has other plans set in motion before any of that can actually happen, shown brilliantly in the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer.

John Harrison, at least that’s the name we’re told, has blackmailed a Starfleet insider to blow up an archive in London that sets in motion a full-on terrorist attack on Starfleet’s brain trust gathered at headquarters, including Pike, Kirk, Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Peter Weller’s Starfleet head, Marcus.

Star Trek Into Darkness Benedict Cumberbatch

It is at that moment that one would believe that Star Trek Into Darkness is a revenge tale. You would be wrong. It is so much more than that.

Again, we don’t want to tread into spoiler territory, but fans of the franchise will delight in how Abrams and writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have crafted this story with not only nods to the original TV series, but icons of the franchise and how they are interwoven into the plot.

As Kirk is reinstated and his crew sets out to get the man responsible for the terrorist attacks, why the film works so well is unspooled moment by moment until the film’s credits roll -- because you don’t expect what is coming at you.

Abrams may have used the word “darkness” in his title, but the film is still packed with dizzying brightness and yes, lens flares flourish. Oh, this story gets dark, but it is handled with a boyish amount of charm and humor that keeps things light, even as shown in this Star Trek Into Darkness clip as the Enterprise appears to be heading towards destructive peril.

The cast, again, shows why they were so impeccably chosen. Quinto continues to find nuances in the Spock character that must make Nimoy proud. John Cho’s Sulu gets some added responsibility and handles it with power and panache. But, the one who gets some seriously added screen time is Simon Pegg’s Scotty. And, who doesn’t love Scotty and Pegg for that matter?

Simon Pegg Star Trek Into Darkness

And we cannot say enough about Benedict Cumberbatch. His villain is a combination of brute force and exceptional intelligence with a passion for making a wrong a right that should place his character firmly near the top in the annals of villainy movie history.

Purists of the Star Trek universe may scoff at how the plot is laid out in Star Trek Into Darkness. But, in the world that Abrams has created, it not only works and ups the ante, but also triumphs in giving audiences a summer movie that meets and exceeds the hype.

Riddick Trailer: Vin Diesel Rules the Dark

As an actor, Vin Diesel put himself on the Hollywood map with his turn as the character Riddick in the 2000 film Pitch Black. It was a terrific role for any actor, but one that fit Diesel like a glove. Diesel and Riddick are back when the film that simply takes the anti-hero’s moniker arrives on September 6 and Movie Fanatic has the flick’s first trailer.

We also got our hands on the film’s synopsis, giving us a deeper understanding of what to expect this fall when writer and director David Twohy's (The Fugitive) vision sees the light of day.

Riddick, the escaped convict who is being pursued by every bounty hunter in the galaxy, was left for dead on a sun soaked planet. Only, he is still alive and after battling aliens more vicious than any of the humans he has encountered. His only hope for turning back those creatures that seek his demise is to set off an emergency beacon that will alert those very people who he has been trying to avoid.

Diesel is having quite the year, Riddick lands in theaters merely months after he surely scores with Fast and Furious 6.

Rio 2 Teaser Trailer: Rhythm is Gonna Get You

The gang from Rio are back! The first teaser trailer for Rio 2 has landed and it has us all sorts of aflutter. If they say birds of a feather flock together, then how do you explain the success of Rio?

The first film told the story of Jesse Eisenberg's Blu and how he found his way from housepet in America to flying down to the Brazilian city to help stave off extinction of his species. It was there that he met Anne Hathaway's avian creature and the two struck up the most unlikely of animated romances.

The teaser shows us that all of the characters we adored from the first one are back. Although, you may wonder where the evil villain is from the first film... just you wait. By the end of the teaser, he promises to "poop" on this party soon enough!

Look for Rio 2 to hit theaters in time for the World Cup to also arrive in the famed Brazilian city... April 11, 2014!

The Notebook Ultimate Collector's Edition DVD Review: Romance Revisited

0
0

The Notebook arrived in 2004 and immediately swept viewers off their collective feet. For almost a decade now, fans have been uttering those timeless The Notebook quotes and it seems as if they can never get enough of the love story from Nicholas Sparks.

The Notebook Ultimate Collector's Edition Blu-Ray

The bestselling author’s book is told via a perfectly captured page-to-screen adaptation by filmmaker Nick Cassavetes. For the three people who haven’t seen the film, the story chronicles the life-long love affair between Noah and Allie. A quartet of actors brilliantly portrays them at the beginning and ends of their romance -- Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams and James Garner and Gena Rowlands (who incidentally is the director’s mom!).

Although already out on DVD and Blu-Ray (and one of our Top 10 Romances of All-Time), Warner Bros. has released The Notebook: Ultimate Collector’s Edition that we can promise without a doubt… fans will adore! It contains a slew of extras, in addition to both the DVD and Blu-Ray of the film.

There are few films that possess the passionate fan base that The Notebook does, and The Notebook: Ultimate Collector’s Edition will only fan their fire for the wildly romantic film. The set is packed with romantic extras that are inspired by the film and allow the viewer to continue the “feel” of the film, long after the credits have rolled.

The highlights of the package include a vintage leather-style blank journal which allows you to create your own Notebook-type memories, as well as an antique golden locket and surprisingly beautiful postcard set featuring iconic scenes from the movie.

Bonus features abound and none are better than the audio commentary laid down by author Sparks. He wrote the book as a 28-year-old who was unhappy with his career trajectory and felt he never gave writing a chance. Months later, he emerged with the book that would catapult him to the top of the bestseller list, where he hasn’t looked back since. It’s fascinating to hear him talk so fondly about the novel that started it all in The Notebook audio commentary.

The Notebook Ultimate Collector's Edition

Fans will also treasure the deleted scenes from the movie, as they have proven a group of movie viewers who cannot get enough of the Gosling, McAdams, Garner and Rowlands tandem. To see scenes that didn’t make the cut only adds to the resonance of the entire The Notebook movie experience.

Four featurettes also make their mark, with each more interesting that the last.

All in the Family -- Nick Cassavetes explores the filmmaker's movie familial history, Nicholas Sparks: A Simple Story, Well Told chronicles the author’s journey from struggling writer to blockbuster success, Southern Exposure: Locating the Notebook takes viewers behind the scenes of the locales made famous by the film and finally, Casting Rachel and Ryan looks at how filmmakers and the casting director struck gold with these two, at the time, unheard-of performers.

Speaking of McAdams, The Notebook: Collector’s Edition also features her audition tape -- it is fascinating to say the least.
