So, Star Trek Into Darkness tops the box office handily, but does that mean it is the best Star Trek movie? Now's your chance to let us know... as the debate is feverish in the sci-fi and film fan community.

Star Trek The Wrath of Khan Ricardo Montalban

The films, based on the television series created by Gene Roddenberry, have had a varied level of success over the years.

Both the original cast, led by William Shatner, and the Star Trek: Next Generation crew -- led by Patrick Stewart -- have made the leap to the big screen. Meanwhile, the last two films from J.J. Abrams -- 2009's Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness -- had the difficult task of literally starting the franchise from scratch with a new cast and storylines that borrowed from the franchise's mythology while still going where no man has gone before.

So, what's your favorite? Is it Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan? Or perhaps you're partial to Star Trek: Generations? Or maybe it is the latest one shown off in this Star Trek Into Darkness trailer. Let us know...

What's the best Star Trek movie of all-time?

Star Wars Episode VII Casting News: Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Talks to Star?

With Star Trek Into Darkness premiering last Thursday, J.J. Abrams can turn his attention fully to his next gigantic sci-fi property: Star Wars: Episode VII.

While production is not set to start until next year, it is no surprise that Abrams and company are starting to throw some names around for the cast.

The first big name circling the rumor mill is Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Latino Review, who have a pretty good rumor track record, claim that Abrams is in talks with Meyers to star in an unspecified role.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers Pic

With the script still being written by Michael Arndt, surely a lot is still subject to change. Early speculation, though, is that the lead in the new film will be female, meaning Meyers would be playing a supporting role.

Meyers has appeared in such films as Match Point, Mission: Impossible III, and Bend it Like Beckham. The Irish actor will next star in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Star Wars Episode VII is slated to be  released in 2015.

About Time Trailer: Hot Love Time Machine

Time machines come in various forms across the history of movies. There’s the titular Hot Tub Time Machine, and now there’s a piece of furniture as shown off in the debut trailer for About Time. The film stars Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson as a pair of lovebirds whose romance is sparked by Gleeson’s ability to travel through time to get things right… like exactly right.

About Time is from the writer director of Love, Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral, Richard Curtis. It also stars frequent Curtis collaborator Bill Nighy as the father of Gleeson who tells his onscreen son on his 21st birthday that he has the power to go back in time.

As seen in the trailer above, Gleeson’s character uses that ability to make sure his courting of McAdams goes exactly as planned to ensure the two fall in love. But, as Nighy warns in the teaser, sometimes time travel can go too far.

Look for About Time when it releases November 1 in limited release before going wide November 8.

The Hangover Part III Synopsis:

It’s been two years. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are happily living uneventful lives at home. Tattoos have been lasered off, files purged. The last they heard from disaster-magnet Leslie Chow (Ken Jeong), he’d been tossed into a Thai prison and, with him out of the way, the guys have very nearly recovered from their nights prowling the seamy side of Las Vegas in a roofie’d haze, and being kidnapped, shot at, and chased by drug-dealing mobsters in Bangkok.

The only member of the Wolfpack who’s not content is Alan (Zach Galifianakis). Still lacking a sense of purpose, the group’s black sheep has ditched his meds and given in to his natural impulses in a big way -- which, for Alan, means no boundaries, no filters and no judgment -- until a personal crisis forces him to finally seek the help he needs.

And who better than his three best friends to make sure he takes the first step. This time, there’s no bachelor party. No wedding. What could possibly go wrong? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.

The Hangover Part III is the epic conclusion to an incomparable odyssey of mayhem and bad decisions, in which the guys must finish what they started by going back to where it all began: Las Vegas.

Stories We Tell Review: Sarah Polley Pushes Envelope

$
0
0

Sarah Polley had a secret and now, thanks to her wildly powerful film Stories We Tell, the world knows it. The filmmaker that has wowed audiences with her work, most recently writing and directing Take This Waltz with Michelle Williams and as an actress in films as far reaching as Dawn of the Dead and one of our favorites… Go.

Sarah Polley Stories We Tell

Polley has released a documentary, teased in this Stories We Tell trailer, which follows her family history and how her world turned upside down when she discovered that the man who raised her was not her biological father.

The film is told through visual flashbacks that feel so real, you would swear you could see how Polley turned to film as a career because a family member chronicled everything they did. Of course, the scenes are recreations, but the familial love and the reality of it all seems so real it’s palpable.

Her mother was an actress, like her father (who also was a playwright) and as the family grew, their dreams of stage stardom waned -- given the weight of raising a family. Sarah came late, she was the last born, and there was an ongoing joke that she did not look at all like her father.

Her mother, who everyone who comments throughout the documentary clearly adores, was lauded by her friends and family alike. They heap praises on this woman for her voracity of life and her passion for living it to the fullest. Yet, beneath that enigmatic smile was a woman who was a little lost and riddled with regret of a life not lived. Through this family secret, we learn through Sarah’s cinematic journey with Stories We Tell, that she had another life and it produced Sarah.

The film introduces us to Sarah’s real father and we learn of their relationship and more importantly, how it impacts the man who raised her with love. This is also a uniquely Canadian story as everyone in it possesses the traits of those people that they are most known for including politeness and ever growing graciousness.

Stories We Tell Poster

In America, this may have been a scandal worthy of appearances on daytime talk shows. But, through this uniquely Canadian way of telling this story, it is powerful, intimate and all encompassing in its ability to haunt you in the best of ways -- long after the credits have rolled..

Polley is a gifted filmmaker, that much has been proven. But, what she does with her own story and how she combines her cinematic vision with emotional landmines is nothing short of a miracle. She is a writer-director whose work has leapt to the top of our list of people whose films we will witness, regardless of their subject matter. Polley’s work needs to be seen… period, and that is never so clear than in Stories We Tell.

Stand Up Guys Exclusive: Al Pacino & Christopher Walken Talk Tough

Stand Up Guys lands on DVD and Blu-Ray this week and to celebrate, Movie Fanatic presents our exclusive interviews with the movie's stars -- Al Pacino and Christopher Walken -- as well as its director.

The superstars give us their exclusive insight into why the aging gangsters, back-in-action flick (teased in the Stand Up Guys trailer) is not only good fun, but a thrill ride for the audience. And more importantly... a career-long dream achieved for both.

It appears the longtime friends have never worked together before! Walken believes that their kinship parlays onscreen. “I think that helps when you know the person,” Walken said. “I think they call that chemistry.”

Pacino clearly felt the same way. “I love it,” he admitted. “He works the same way. I love him. I just adore being around him.”

The director of Stand Up Guys,  Fisher Stevens, also chimes in during an exclusive interview where he talks about his marvelous cast. In fact, he compares it to a gathering of sports greats.

"I got LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh,” Stevens said, comparing his big three to the starting three of the reigning champion Miami Heat. But, wait… maybe even bigger! “But, even better – I got LeBron, Kobe (Bryant) and MJ (Michael Jordan)! It was a miracle.”

Stand Up Guys stars the big three as aging gangsters who get together for the first time in years after Pacino's character had been sent to jail for a crime they all committed. Pacino's gangster didn't say a word, and that's why he was the only one incarcerated.

Yet, some of the gangster's bosses don't believe he completely kept his mouth shut. Therefore, there is a hit out on him... and the terrific trio have to come together to save Pacino and themselves in the process.

As we stated in our Stand Up Guys review, this is one fun flick and that is largely due to the magic made between the two big stars!

The Last Stand DVD Review: Riveting Return of Schwarzenegger

$
0
0

The Last Stand finds Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to action in a big way after his expanded cameo in The Expendables 2. The action film lands on DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital Download, and does Movie Fanatic recommend it? You bet.

Honestly, we’re kind of surprised the film didn’t do better in its theatrical release as it got (surprisingly) good reviews, great word of mouth and well… it’s Arnold! So now that it’s arrived on home video, hopefully it will gain a larger audience and become the cult classic it deserves to be.

The Last Stand DVD

Shown off in The Last Stand trailer, Schwarzenegger stars as a small town sheriff who “retired” to the Arizona hamlet after serving as a highly decorated LAPD officer. His days are filled with petty complaints from citizens and the occasional traffic ticket dispute. But when one of the most wanted drug lords in the world (Gabriel Cortez) is arrested by the feds, he is in the middle of being transferred and escapes.

Along with his armed-to-the-teeth posse, he is making a beeline for the border, but first must drive through Schwarzenegger’s border city to achieve his freedom. You can probably guess that the lawman will not have it.

As we stated in The Last Stand review when it hit theaters, the cast is up for the challenge of supporting the legendary action star in his big-screen return to greatness. Starring as his deputies are Jaimie Alexander (Thor), Luis Guzman and a steely Rodrigo Santoro. But, stealing the show is Johnny Knoxville as the local gun nut who is deputized to aid in the battle that is speeding towards town.

Proof of how surprisingly good The Last Stand is is seen in the pudding that is the appearance of Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as the fed in charge of tracking down the drug lord. Although his scenes with Schwarzenegger are few, the two have an immediate chemistry that leads us to beg for more films pairing these two!

The extras for The Last Stand DVD and Blu-Ray are solid, but not extraordinary. The usual suspects are here including several deleted scenes that after viewing, it’s easy to see why they were cut. After witnessing the movie, checking them out is more of a curiosity feeding endeavor than a necessity. But, the extended scenes that take clips that made the cut of the movie and give us a little more actually enhance the entire story experience.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Johnny Knoxville The Last Stand

The Not in My Town: Making The Last Stand featurette is the most fascinating of the bonus docs. It takes viewers behind the scenes to show how some of the more intricate stunts were achieved. For anyone who is an action junkie, it is an absolute joy. One of the pivotal scenes in the film (so don’t watch this making-of until after watching the movie) is Cornfield Chaos. Ever wonder who to orchestrate a high octane car chase through a cornfield… well now you have your answer!

And as Knoxville’s character is a major gun nut (and we mean that in the most affectionate of ways), the featurette The Dinkum Firearm and Historic Weaponry Museum should feed the fancy of those like minded of you out there that are fascinated by the history of weapons and more importantly, it is congruent with The Last Stand story, which is more than we can say for most bonus features that seem unrelated to its movie.

The Lone Ranger Trailer: I'd Rather Be An Outlaw

The fourth full The Lone Ranger trailer has landed and we finally have an idea of how Johnny Depp's Tonto wound up working alongside the lawman played by Armie Hammer. It seems Tonto found the man who became the masked lawman left for dead in the desert and it appears our full story is about Hammer getting justice. Movie Fanatic just went from on the fence on this one to uber-excited!

From the very first The Lone Ranger trailer, it was clear that this was Depp's show, even though he is not the title character. With this latest teaser, now we see how that came to be. It is Tonto who found the Lone Ranger and made him who he is... color us impressed with the creative team behind the Disney flick  (particularly the screenwriting collective and director Gore Verbinski). As Tonto says, "The men you seek think you are dead, better to stay that way."

The latest trailer begins with Depp explaining how he found Hammer in the desert as the action builds. We find the payoff line as Hammer's Lone Ranger says, "If these men represent the law, I'd rather be an outlaw."

Enough said... count us in when The Lone Ranger rides into theater July 3.

Beautiful Creatures DVD Review: Fantasy Comes Home

$
0
0

Beautiful Creatures has arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray and hopes to capture a little of that young adult literature magic that spawned the Twilight Saga to greatness. Does it succeed? Well, according to our Beautiful Creatures review from when the film hit theaters, it comes close.

Beautiful Creatures DVD

Based on the bestselling book by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia, the film chronicles the unlikely love story between two teens played by Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert. See, Englert’s character Lena is a Caster (a type of wtich) and she is nearing a major birthday where the universe will determine whether or not she is a “good” one or a “bad” one. The problem arises when she falls in love with Ehrenreich’s Ethan, the Southern small town’s introverted literary fan.

As something mysterious has happened to Lena’s parents, she’s taken to the Southern town to live with her uncle (the always awesome Jeremy Irons). Irons’ character does not approve of this teenage love affair and believes that she is selfishly putting the boy in danger. See, it’s like Twilight in reverse. But, it really is much more than that.

The supporting cast does their best with the material, especially Emma Thompson who transforms herself every which way, all without special effects! As teased in the Beautiful Creatures trailer, the key to this story is its teenage angst-ridden love story. The chemistry between the two leads is sizzling, and that’s why it manages to work at least decently well.

Authors Stohl and Garcia have written an entire series based on these characters that have done blockbuster business all over the globe. But given the film’s tepid response from audiences last year, whether we will see additional chapters in this cinematic series remains to be seen. Fans can always have the Blu-Ray and DVD to watch over and over if nothing else.

Lena and Ethan Beautiful Creatures

Speaking of the home video release, it does contain over 30 minutes of bonus features. The most fascinating, particularly for fans of the series, is Book to Screen. It chronicles the authors' journey from penning the YA hit to bringing it to Hollywood. Also, for those not so familiar with the universe of Beautiful Creatures, The Casters feature is a don’t-miss. It illustrates how Casters are technically different than witches and why the distinction is made.

The requisite deleted scenes are also interesting, if for no other reason than it is a chance to see stellar actors such as Irons and Thompson doing their own brand of magic.

Author Dennis LeHane has plenty of experience with movie adaptations, only he's always the one getting adapted.

LeHane's novels, Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island have all been turned into movies, the latter of which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, LeHane will provide the screenplay for the adaptation of the 1964 mystery novel, The Deep Blue Good-by, which will also star DiCaprio.

Leonardo DiCaprio Red Carpet Picture

The film will be called Travis McGee, after the main character of the book, which spawned a 21-book series by author John D. MacDonald.

DiCaprio (The Great Gatsby) has been trying to get an adaptation underway for a while, with him in the role of McGee, a sleezy beach bum and self-described "salvage consultant," who recovers clients' property for a fee.

So much for DiCaprio's "break from acting."

The second clip expands the inventory scene we've gotten a glimpse at in the This is the End trailers. Their supplies include a gun, that Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) decides to play with.

Rogen co-wrote and co-directed the film with Evan Goldberg. This is the End will premiere June 12.
