Dream House Movie Review: Oh, the Horror!

0
0

Dream House begins innocently enough. Daniel Craig is Will, a book editor who is leaving his job to begin life in his Dream House spending more time with his family and writing a novel.

Daniel Craig in Dream House
Will is married to Libby (Rachel Weisz), and the couple has two young girls. Their Dream House is a fixer upper and Weisz has already begun the work when Craig comes home from his last day at work. Their chemistry is electric, which is not always the case with real life couples.

The first signs of fear come from Will’s children, who notice someone gazing into their window at night. Soon after, Will learns there was a gruesome murder in the home and sets in motion a psychological game of Twister that we wish had culminated in an “ah-ha” moment as we experienced in a film of a similar vein, The Others.

Naomi Watts is Anne, a character established as shrouded in mystery. Anne is a neighbor who may hold answers to the questions emerging from Craig’s Dream House. She informs him about the murder and how the patriarch of the family murdered his wife and two young girls.

Soon after, Will investigates the man who is charged with murdering his family, Peter Ward. His inquiry leads him to the mental institution where Ward supposedly lived and had been recently released. It is here that the movie enters a what is real and what’s psychologically construed phase. Unfortunately, this is where Dream House goes off its rails. It’s not that the movie doesn’t know what it wants to be -- an unfolding mystery wrapped in a horror film -- it's just that it simply never reaches its potential and its holes are plenty.

Craig gives a riveting performance, although it is a distraction at times when he slips into his natural U.K. accent which takes away from the film’s central theme: This is a film that is a journey inside the head of Craig’s character. As seen in the Dream House trailer, Will discovers he is Peter Ward. So, what is real? What is construed? Answers are given by the closing credits, but the audience never has anything strong to hold onto that gives credence to the power filmmakers are attempting to achieve.

Rachel Weisz in Dream House
Libby states, “Something is wrong with this house.” The set-up is all there for a thriller with a top notch pedigree. Between Craig, Weisz and Watts' star wattage and director Jim Sheridan’s stellar resume (In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot, In America), Dream House should have been dreamy. It is anything but.

My Week with Marilyn: Two New Michelle Williams Pictures

Could Michelle Williams look any more like Marilyn Monroe in our first set of My Week with Marilyn stills? She sure does in the My Week with Marilyn poster. Now, the film has released two more photos and the Oscar nominee continues to astound in her portrayal of the icon -- at least solely based on these pics.

Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn
My Week with Marilyn lands in theaters November 4 and has Academy Award buzz all over it for its two leads. Williams is Monroe and Kenneth Branagh is Sir Laurence Olivier.

The story follows, you guessed it, a week with Monroe as seen through the eyes of the woman, Colin Clark, hired to be her assistant while she films The Prince and the Showgirl in England. It’s set in 1957 and thus far, the art direction looks right on the mark.

Michelle Williams Channels Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn
But in these new photos, the kudos has to go to the hair and makeup team. They have turned the chameleon-like actress into the Hollywood legend. It is a difficult task for any hair, makeup and wardrobe team to recreate someone so permanently burned on the public’s consciousness. From these early looks at My Week with Marilyn, the film’s creative team scores.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Kristen Stewart Shows her Mettle

Kristen Stewart appears to be having the time of her life filming Snow White and the Huntsman. First off, her contagious smile at this year’s Comic-Con talking about the film with co-star Charlize Theron was rare for the normally reserved Twilight star. Now, a photo has emerged of Stewart as Snow White riding her horse into battle and we have it for you.

Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman
Breaking Dawn fans may be too excited to think about anything other than Stewart completing her Twilight journey in Breaking Dawn Part 1 this November. But, if they treasure the actress as a whole, witnessing her in her Snow White glory is equally as exciting.

Snow White and the Huntsman is currently being shot in Wales and also stars Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth (also in the photo!). Between the image above, and the previously released Snow White and the Huntsman photos, color us excited to witness this new take on the Snow White fairy tale.

Inception, Fast Five and Star Trek Return to IMAX Screens This Week

Select IMAX theaters are celebrating the re-release of three blockbusters by bringing them back to the biggest of screens.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception
Summer 2011 was one of Hollywood’s most profitable, with help from the box office success of Fast Five, and it has a chance to add to its till by returning to IMAX theaters for a one week run -- beginning September 30.

Also arriving on IMAX screens for the September 30 through October 6 re-release is J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek and the dreamy Inception. Movie Fanatic may just have to see Star Trek again, after it was announced that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Trek 2.

AMC Theaters is the chain responsible for the event and they are calling it their Imax Big Movie Week. Fans can check out each film throughout that week for $7, a paltry charge compared to what a first run IMAX flick can cost.

When we say blockbusters to describe these three films, it's an understatement. AMC and IMAX are bringing back movies that have collectively earned over $1.8 billion.

Christopher Nolan Heading into The Twilight Zone?

0
0

Warner Bros is looking to bring The Twilight Zone back on the big screen and return it to public consciousness. The studio has apparently offered The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan the reins to the film and Movie Fanatic cannot think of anyone more qualified or perfect.

Christopher Nolan Red Carpet Picture
In 1983, the last time The Twilight Zone was on the big screen, four superstar directors joined forces to bring four vignettes to life and created cinematic gold in the process. Steven Spielberg, George Miller, John Landis and Joe Dante crafted The Twilight Zone Movie and made it into four chapters, each more compelling than the last.

Whether the new version of The Twilight Zone Movie will be broken into short segments or be one long full length feature is still left to be determined. But if Nolan is the director of the whole project or simply a part, Movie Fanatic could not be more filled with anticipation.

Also of note: Fans of Nolan can check out his Inception, re-released on IMAX screens this week.

Moneyball may have succeeded against traditional baseball wisdom, but the well-reviewed movie just can't knock off any animals at the box office.

A week after falling to The Lion King, Brad Pitt and company were defeated this week by Dolphin Tale, which finished with the most money earned on Friday and Saturday.

Among new releases, 50/50 was a modest success, considering its small budget, while What's Your Number? couldn't exactly establish Anna Faris as a movie star. Let's take a look at the top 10:

  1. Dolphin Tale: $14.25 million
  2. Moneyball: $12.5 million
  3. The Lion King 3D: $11.1 million
  4. 50/50: $8.85 million
  5. Courageous: $8.8 million
  6. Dream House: $8.2 million
  7. Abduction: $5.65 million
  8. What's Your Number?: $5.6 million
  9. Contagion: $5 million
  10. Killer Elite: $4.85 million

24 Movie Inches Closer to Happening: Kiefer Sutherland Proudly States

0

It took the creative team of 24 to get “relaxed,” according to star Kiefer Sutherland, for a storyline that would work for them to take Jack Bauer to the big screen. A script for a 24 movie is almost done!

Kiefer Sutherland on 24
What 24 did as a TV series that worked so impeccably well was its pacing of presenting a day in the life of Bauer and the national catastrophe he was averting, an hour at a time over 24 episodes.

Sutherland was quoted as saying that throughout the entire script writing process for the film, trying to condense that electricity into two hours was the giant speed bump that prevented them from going forward.

“That’s been the most difficult thing. You have to remember that we have 24 hours to explain the stories in 24 and so trying to condense that into a two-hour film version has been a real shift in gear for us,” Sutherland told The Telegraph. “We were originally trying to make it too big and put too much into it – but once we relaxed, we found out how to tell that story. So yes we definitely do plan on making the film.”

Arrested Development Coming Back to TV Before Big Screen

The announcement was made at the Bluth Family Reunion and it was music to Arrested Development fans’ ears. The entire gang will be back for a fourth season that will serve as a prelude to a big screen adaptation that everyone has been teased with for years.

Arrested Development Cast
The New Yorker Film Festival hosted a panel that featured the cast of the wildly popular, but ratings hurting series about a dysfunctional functional family. Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, David Cross, Michael Cera, Tony Hale, Portia de Rossi, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter were all in attendance and no one could have guessed the news out of the fictional family reunion would be so good.

Apparently Arrested Development could return for nine or ten episodes with each serving as a means of re-introducing the characters individually by telling what they have been up to since the show got axed.

Arrested Development creator Mitchel Hurwitz even admitted that this return to TV was a prelude to a big screen film. “We’re trying to do a limited-run series into the movie. We’re basically hoping to do 9 or 10 episodes, with almost one character per episode,” Hurwitz said.

Netflix and Showtime are in talks to distribute the return to TV and all we have to say is: Let the countdown begin.

Is Idris Elba the Next James Bond?

0

Rumors have been flying for the last several days that Idris Elba has been approached about picking up Daniel Craig’s tux after that star has finished his stint as James Bond. James Bond 23 is currently filming and somehow word got out that Elba could be the next UK star to pick up the superspy’s mantle.

Idris Elba Picture
Elba spoke about the swirling rumors and even clarified how, why and if he would tackle the role. “I just don't want to be the black James Bond,” Elba said. “Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond. If I played him, I don't want to be called the black James Bond.”

The London-based actor has been a hit with audiences from his character on the hit BBC show Luther. He also has a budding movie career with recent turns in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim and Ridley Scott’s epic Prometheus.

So despite his reservations about being thought of as the “black” James Bond, Elba appeared ready to leap at the opportunity.

“I'd not only get in the cab, but I'd take the taxi driver out of the car, hostage. The taxi, jump out while it was moving, jump onto a pedal bike that was just past the door as I got on it, and then get onto a plane -- on the wing -- land on top of Sony Studios, slide through the air conditioning, and land in the office,” Elba said.

“I'm never shaken or stirred.”

Pink Making Film Debut in Thanks for Sharing

Pink, who will be known on film by her full name Alecia Moore, is making her film debut in filmmaker Stuart Blumberg’s sex addiction dramedy Thanks for Sharing.

Pink on the Red Carpet
Thanks for Sharing features an all-star cast including Tim Robbins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joely Richardson and Mark Ruffalo. Blumberg, recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay for The Kids Are All Right, began shooting his film in New York City in late September. Moore is heading to the set as we speak.

The film follows friends as they navigate the mine field of recovering from sex addiction while still trying to maintain relationships that focus on love versus sex.

“Alecia could not be a more ideal fit for this role,” notes Blumberg. “She carries with her just the right combination of heart and edginess for the part of Dede, and we’re incredibly excited to share her acting talent with audiences.”

Real Steel: Movie Fanatic Gets Real with Hugh Jackman

0
0

Hugh Jackman was more than eager to get into the ring with Real Steel, a film he felt would appeal to families, adults, kids and everyone in between. When we met Jackman, he was his usual affable self, generous and gracious -- as well as someone who keenly understood that stardom that arrived later in his career than most, is something to be treasured.

Hugh Jackman Stars in Real Steel
Jackman talked with Movie Fanatic about the intricacies of Real Steel, as well as few of his other high profile roles that will be filming in the next 12 months: Wolverine and Les Miserables with Russell Crowe.

Movie Fanatic: Anthony Mackie’s character in Real Steel calls you a…

Hugh Jackman: Bad bet.

Movie Fanatic: Exactly. Was there anytime in your own life that you felt like a bad bet?

Hugh Jackman: I think when I started acting. I felt like a really bad bet. I was someone who acted all the time – in school plays, musical societies. Then I thought I wanted to do some acting classes. I majored in journalism, I had a degree and I was like, “I don’t know if I’m up for it.” So, I went and did some classes and I got into this one year course, which was not easy to get into. I snuck in. Literally for the first four months I felt like the dunce of the class. I really knew nothing about acting, except I liked it. Everyone in there had a big leather jacket, smoking… I was like, “Hey acting. This is really cool.” [Laughs] “Did you guys see Indiana Jones?” [Imitating his classmates] “How about Raging Bull, man?” Every time I did something the teachers would roll their eyes. I don’t know if you’ve ever been in the situation, when there’s a smell about you that you feel like you’re the dunce of the class, everybody’s like, [distant] “Hey man, how are you?” It’s a lonely feeling. The turning point was not caring anymore what people thought. I’m just going to enjoy this and I don’t care if you’re rolling your eyes at me or not. It was a great lesson to learn. Probably, all along the way, I’ve carried that with me as an actor. You just have to do what you think is right and work harder than everybody else.

Movie Fanatic: What was it about Dakota Goyo, who plays your son, that when you did the chemistry read you knew: That’s the kid?

Hugh Jackman: When he auditioned, I knew he was the kid. He has that “thing” onscreen. I remember doing a lighting test and they were slowly pushing in on his face, there’s no acting in a lighting test, you just sit there, and everyone was talking and he was just drifting off. The camera was moving in on him and the girl behind the monitor started crying. He just has it. In terms of the chemistry, I just generally love this kid. I have kids as well, I had to be a little careful when my son’s around, so he didn’t get too jealous. We really got on so well. He’s the nicest kid. He’s fun. He’s mature, which you need to be on a movie set, unfortunately. He’s mature without being precocious. We even mucked around. I kept having to remind him that we’re contemporaries in this movie. If anything in the movie, you’re more the adult than me.

Dakota Goyo and Hugh Jackman in Real Steel
Movie Fanatic: The way the movie is shot, your character is a loser for a long time. I wanted to know, when you were reading the script, how many pages in until you realize, he wasn’t as much of a loser?

Hugh Jackman: [long pause] Definitely half way, maybe a little beyond that. What I always loved was his strength emanated from his son, first. What I got right from the start was that he was someone who “could have been a contender.” [Laughs] He could have been the guy. He wasn’t his choice and in the end, he wasn’t the best boxer of all time. He was right up here. It’s all taken away from him. He’s made mistakes. He definitely made mistakes with his son. He owes money all over the place. He stopped believing in himself. I’m not sure when that happened. Of course I made up a whole back story. I thought about it a lot like Mike Tyson. These people make a big difference and when they’re gone… he’s just somebody who had not much to rely on. When life becomes too painful, I think people switch off. It’s just easier not to participate and make bad choice after bad choice. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. It’s the kid who feels that he can do this. He doesn’t even believe he can be a father. Even though he was kind of a loser, I always felt for him.

Movie Fanatic: In Real Steel, boxing is obviously changing. Have you ever felt like acting is always changing and do you just do your thing?

Hugh Jackman: When I started as an actor. It was all I could to do to not be unemployed. My thought was, “I just want to keep working. I don’t want to have to go back to whatever small job I had. I just want to work as an actor. I’ll try it for five years.” I did everything I could for five years. I was a presenter on a TV show. I did TV, I did small films, I did musical theater – I never sang in my life for crying out loud.

Movie Fanatic: You’re good at it!

Hugh Jackman: Believe me, I was shocked. I’m the only person in the history of musical theater that had it in his contact that I had to have singing lessons. They paid for it even [laughs]. I was good, I was not great. I thought that I would just open as many doors as I can. Somehow I don’t know when it happened, maybe five or six years ago, instead of it being a survival mechanism, it became the thing that differentiated me from other people. Because I had fifteen years of singing and dancing lessons every week, you know… I do everything!

Movie Fanatic: What was it in your person that has given you that drive? A lot of people would have just given up.

Hugh Jackman: I gave myself five years. If I couldn’t support myself after five years, I was moving on. I remember after five years, it was OK, not great. Well, let’s try another five years. Sometime during those five years, X-Men arrived.

Movie Fanatic: When do you start on Les Miserables?

Hugh Jackman: I go next week to do some rehearsals. I auditioned about two or three months ago. It’s January/February rehearsals and we start shooting in March.

Movie Fanatic: I understand you insisted on auditioning for it.

Hugh Jackman: Yeah, I had about a three hour audition. In fact, I demanded Tom Hooper audition me before he even signed his contract. I wanted to do this so bad. I didn’t want to leave anything up to his imagination. I wanted him to know what I could do, just in case he thought about ringing Daniel Day Lewis [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: Will you be doing Wolverine?

Hugh Jackman: Yes, I’m shooting Wolverine after Les Mis, so we’ll shoot that next summer.

Movie Fanatic: We’re so excited for your one man show on Broadway. How you feeling as your premiere approaches?

Hugh Jackman: Whenever you step on the Great White Way it’s one of those great moments, I never take it for granted. It’s called Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway and I had a chance to do this show earlier in San Francisco, then worked on it for another couple of months, took it Toronto, I didn’t think I’d be doing it now. I was sure I was shooting Wolverine, that’s been the story of my year. But we couldn’t quite fit it in before Les Mis, the movie, so there was a theater available. I’ve got to be honest -- when I created this show my only rule with myself was that I would be desperate to do it, no matter when. Of course doing the show on Broadway does add another level of expectation I suppose and pressure, but I’m genuinely excited about it.

Movie Fanatic: Did you know going into this that Sugar Ray would be training you?

Shawn Levy Directs Hugh Jackman in Real Steel
Hugh Jackman: I remember being asked about it. They said, “Listen, we’re thinking about hiring Sugar Ray to work with the robots and do the choreography, and also to help you out with the boxing. Are you cool with that?” I was like, “Can I just get this straight? Are you asking me if I’m okay to have one of the greatest boxers of all time as my personal trainer? Yeah.” I was a little intimidated. I was definitely star-struck when I met him. I’ve been lucky enough to have met a lot of very big movie stars, but deep down if I was any better at it I would be a sportsman -- so meeting someone like Sugar Ray I kind of turn into a little kid.

Bucky Larson Quotes: A Super Duper, Movie Star

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star may have missed the mark with theater audiences (We liked it: Check out our Bucky Larson review), but Movie Fanatic guarantees the film will live on for years with people quoting Nick Swardson’s character and his many funny lines.

Nick Swardson and Christina Ricci in Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star
Swardson stars as Bucky Larson (don't miss our Nick Swardson exclusive video interview), a Midwest young man who discovers his parents were porn stars in the 1970’s and decides that it is his destiny to go to Hollywood and become a big star.

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star was co-written by Adam Sandler and is from his Happy Madison production company. Like so many Sandler films before, Bucky Larson will go down in movie quote history, so here’s a sampling of some of the silly Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star quotes.

Bucky Larson: Everyone keeps talking about my accent, but I'm from America! | permalink

Bucky Larson: I'm the son of two movie stars! That's like uhh, super duper, movie star! | permalink

Bucky Larson: I get a lot of compliments on it. Thanks Mom!

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol IMAX Poster Premieres

Tom Cruise has always reached new heights in terms of his acting career. The movie poster for the IMAX release of Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol shows the actor literally doing what we metaphorically just referred to -- hope you’re not afraid of heights!

Mission Impossible 4 IMAX Poster
Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol lands in theaters, both normal and IMAX, on December 16.

The shot in the poster is a sequence in the film where Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is scaling the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai, the world’s tallest building. The scene is also in the Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol trailer.

Mission Impossible 4 brings back franchise favorites Ving Rhames, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg. Also joining the Protocol party is newbies Tom Wilkinson and Jeremy Renner.

Lion King Cracks All-Time Domestic Box Office Top 10

Spider-Man is no longer one of the top 10 highest grossing films of all time domestically. Thanks to the Disney rerelease of The Lion King 3D, the film landed in the number 10 spot on the all-time domestic box office top 10. We guess that answers the question: Will audiences flock to see Lion King in 3D?

Simba in Lion King 3D
Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire got bumped to number 11 as The Lion King’s additional $79.6 million in ticket sales in the last three weeks pushed it into the top 10. Spidey now sits at number 11 just ahead of Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The Lion King makes its highly anticipated Blu-Ray debut October 4 (check back tomorrow as Movie Fanatic reviews the release) and look for the classic to break Blu-Ray records to add to its already stellar run.

Steve Carell to Play Schizophrenic Killer in Foxcatcher

0

Steve Carell got really upset when Michael Scott burned his foot in a George Foreman grill on an episode of The Office.

But that's nothing compared to how dark the actor is planning to go for his next role.

Carell, Steve

Carell will play the lead in Foxcatcher, which tells the story of millionaire Jon du Pont, the man who murdered Olympic wrestler Dave Shulz and someone believed to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia. The drama will be directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball).

The role, of course, is quite the departure from the lighter fare on Carell's resume. He was mostly recently seen opposite Emma Stone, Julianne Moore and Ryan Gosling and we encourage readers to visit our Crazy, Stupid Love quotes section to be reminded of that great movie.

Ron Howard Coyly Talks Arrested Development Movie, TV Return

0
0

Ron Howard has been as guilty as anyone in the Arrested Development universe telling anyone who would listen that the project will happen. Now that creator Mitch Hurwitz announced that Arrested Development will return on TV and movie form, Howard is adding his two cents.

The Cast of Arrested Development
Howard was on the set of G4’s Attack of the Show and not only confirmed the project, but added a few details. Cue heartbeats racing.

“Mitch Hurwitz is writing. The cast is totally behind the idea and as he (Hurwitz) was working on the movie he began to develop the sense that we need to catch up with these characters. But, it would take too much time in the movie,” Howard said. “So, what if we reintroduced, not really like the old episodes, but in a new way using the characters, on TV, and reintroduced the Bluths and everyone around them and then let the actual reunion be the movie.”

Howard did not give a timeframe for the debut of the return of the Bluths and Arrested Development, and we don’t care. As long as this story has been confirmed, which it clearly has, Movie Fanatic could not be more thrilled:

“Every studio is very supportive of the idea. But, there is much to be worked out.”
