Planes Trailer: For Flying Out Loud!

$

The first full length trailer for Planes has landed… pun intended! When Disney first decided to do a spin-off of the Cars movies, it was thought what better mechanical world to explore than those that take to the sky. And with the premise of a crop duster who dreams of racing glory -- that classic Disney formula was in full effect.

Fresh off the too short Planes trailer and the Planes clip that showed off the film’s score, Disney has released a full length teaser that gives us more characters and plot. The competitors in this racing flick span the globe as we meet Planes from Britain, India, Italy and France.

Planes takes off in cinemas worldwide August 9 and features the vocal talents of Dane Cook as the lead, John Cleese, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Cedric the Entertainer, Priyanka Chopra, Gabriel Iglesias, Roger Craig Smith, Colin Cowherd, Sinbad, Oliver Kalkofe and real life play-by-play master Brent Musburger.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Star Evangeline Lilly Talks Being "Ruthless"

Unlike almost everyone else in the world of The Hobbit, Evangeline Lilly could create her character, Tauriel, completely from scratch. Lilly is talking about her role in the second film in the series, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and admitted that she and the film series’ creators decided it was also time for a little more of a female presence in J.R.R. Tolkien’s world.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Evangeline Lilly

The Hobbit didn’t include female characters at all and was a very linear story, a book for children, really,” Lilly said. “What Peter (Jackson), Fran (Walsh) and Philippa (Boyens) have done is all in perfect keeping with Tolkien’s world, while adding a third dimension to an otherwise very two-dimensional story.”

Lilly also admitted that compared to some of the elves we’ve already met in The Lord of the Rings, she’s a mere babe.

“She’s a very, very young elf. She’s only 600 years old, unlike Legolas who’s like, 1,900 years old and Thranduil who’s about 3,000 years old,” Lilly said. “She doesn’t have quite the wisdom and pose that those two boys do; she’s a little more... gritty -- a little more spontaneous, passionate perhaps.”

Evangeline Lilly The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Lilly debuts her Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and promises a character who kicks major ass, while still showcasing those classic Elven traits.

“To play this character I need to have a certain amount of grace,” said Lilly. “But I’m also supposed to be an absolutely ruthless, deadly killer."

Now You See Me: Isla Fisher "Almost Drowned" During Filming!

Isla Fisher stars in Now You See Me as one of the quartet of magicians known as The Four Horsemen. As teased in the Now You See Me trailer, the four stage elaborate illusions for their act that involve stealing money from banks around the world and sharing some of the loot with their audience. Needless to say, the Feds (led by Mark Ruffalo) do not take to kindly to this.

Fisher first caught American audiences' eyes when she stole scenes from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in The Wedding Crashers and went on to star in a slew of films, including Confessions of a Shopaholic and can currently be see in The Great Gatsby.

Of all the challenges she faced making Now You See Me, she tells us the most difficult was tackling a Houdini-style chained underwater trick where she must break free. The trick was so dangerous... the Australian actress almost died!

"I was in that tank for three days. The handcuffs that they made me were magnetic so I could get free, but the chain that joined them… wasn’t," Fisher admitted. "It got caught on the bottom of the tank and I almost drowned."

Warner Bros. continues its celebration of its 90th anniversary with the release of an astounding set of its best gangster movies broken into two parts: Contemporary and classic.

Ultimate Gangster Collection: Classic Blu-Ray

The Ultimate Gangster Collection: Classics and Ultimate Gangster Collection: Contemporary are both out now on Blu-Ray and for all you fathers out there… start hinting now!

The iconic studio is marking their big birthday all year. We have previously reviewed impressive sets that include (our favorite) Warner Bros. Best Pictures, Warner Bros. Musicals and Warner Bros. Presents 20 Riveting Romances.

The classic gangster collection includes two from icon James Cagney -- The Public Enemy and White Heat. Also in the set is the Edward G. Robinson starring Little Caesar and The Petrified Forest starring Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis.

The bonus DVD on that set features the astounding documentary Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Drama. The doc explores the building of the genre that became the gangster film and Warner Bros’. important place in that history as well as how those films influenced filmmakers today. Most notable of those directors that possess a clear lineage to the gangster past are Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann and Brian De Palma.

Ultimate Gangster Collection: Contemporary Blu-Ray

Those there are well represented with their work on the Ultimate Gangster Collection: Contemporary collection. Further enhancing this powerful set is the inclusion of Scorsese’s Mean Streets and Goodfellas (both starring Robert De Niro) and his Oscar winning film The Departed. De Palma is represented with his award-winning The Untouchables, a film that chronicles the Eliot Ness effort to bring down notorious gangster Al Capone.

And what contemporary gangster movie set would be complete without Mann’s stunner, Heat. The film was the first to feature De Niro and Al Pacino sharing screen time. Proof of their collective power is seen in this clip from the Ultimate Gangsters Collection.

Movie Fanatic is just slightly obsessed with this genre, and speaking to the power of this Warner Bros. collection, many of the films contained in the set are on our Top 10 Gangster Movies of All-Time!

The Smurfs 2 hope to lure audiences back in blue when the film lands in theaters July 31. The sequel to the 2011 smash The Smurfs brings back Neil Patrick Harris in the live-action CGI meld, but look for those similarities to be about it.

This time out -- as previewed in The Smurfs 2 trailer -- the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is more determined than ever to bring the world of the Smurfs to an end. As such, he has created a couple of Smurf-like creatures. These Naughties, he hopes, will allow him to infiltrate the Smurf world and give him what he has been yearning for for years…. The all-powerful Smurf-essence. You can see these creations in the posters below, lurking behind some of our favorite Smurfs.

These mischievous Smurf imitators don’t quite do it, as Gargamel will learn, as the magic of Smurf-dom can only be gotten from a true Smurf.

So, what’s an evil wizard to do? How about kidnap the only lady in Smurf-ville, Smurfette (Katy Perry). He brings her to Paris (cause that’s what you do with a lady, no?) where he has made a splash as the city’s most popular sorcerer.

As the Smurf nation cannot live without their only female member, Papa Smurf gets the gang together and they make the trans-Atlantic trip to rescue Smurfette.

Jayma Mays also returns to the franchise, with Brendan Gleeson joining the cast as Victor Winslow.

Dave Franco, as seen in this Now You See Me clip, had to learn not only magic tricks for his role as part of the Four Horsemen magic troupe in the film but he also had to learn an X-Men Gambit-type of card throwing. Franco demonstrated that feat in our exclusive video interview. “I’ll show you some Gambit stuff right now,” he proudly exclaimed.

Franco also extolled the virtues of his superstar co-stars Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine... all front and center in this Now You See Me trailer.

"I told my friends who I grew up with who was in the film, and they said, 'How the hell did you do that?' I just kept my mouth shut and did the job," Franco said. "I was hoping they wouldn’t fire me before the end of the job!"

Grumpy Cat Movie In Development

It's happened, everyone! Movies are now being developed from memes.

They've mined tv shows, video games, amusement park rides, board games, and with the Angry Birds movie in the works, even apps, and now they're moving on to a single still image of a cat. Grumpy Cat, the naturally angry-looking cat that has swept the internet since being posted on Reddit last year, is getting a movie.

Grumpy Cat

Broken Road's Todd Garner and Sean Robbins will produce the film, which will reportedly feature a talking version of the cat (perhaps in CG?)

“This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy," said Garner. "You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next.  We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”

Now that movie studios are officially encroaching on the dumb little things we love on the internet, is there anywhere we can go to have some brief, unadulterated joy? Or is Having a Beer on the Porch: the Movie next?

Top 10 Will Smith Movies: Freshest of The Fresh Prince

After Earth star Will Smith has had the most unlikely of career ascensions. The Philadelphia rapper emerged from making hits such as Parents Just Don’t Understand and promptly became a TV superstar thanks to the Quincy Jones produced smash, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Will Smith Picture

And he didn’t become a movie blockbuster star “fresh” out the gate. Oh no, he took the challenge of portraying a gay homeless teen in Six Degrees of Separation to announce his cinematic talent… and hasn’t looked back since.

Then… it happened. July 4 became his weekend and what a time period as it is ground zero for Hollywood smash hits of the summer. First, there was Independence Day, then one year later Men in Black was released and as they say, the rest is history.

Now he’s back in a summer film, this time with his son Jaden along for the sci-fi ride. Smith stars in After Earth, from director M. Night Shyamalan, and after two decades in the business, it’s time to look back and present the freshest of the Fresh Prince… The Top 10 Will Smith Movies. You voted for your favorite Will Smith movie, now it's our turn!

10. Enemy of the State
Smith joined forces with Tony Scott in a film that would precede the Patriot Act, but would eerily predict the dark side of government snooping. In Enemy of the State, Smith portrayed a Washington, D.C. lawyer who had the unfortunate timing of running into an old friend as he was being pursued by a team led by Jon Voight’s government agent's team. It seems that he possessed some sort of information that would bring down their entire operation.

Will Smith in Enemy of the State

Before you know it, Smith is on the run and he is up against the full surveillance power of the United States government. In a case of smarts outsmarting science, Smith prevails. The movie is one of the Top 10 Tony Scott movies, and is a no-brainer to kick of our list of Smith’s best.

9. I, Robot
I, Robot continued Hollywood’s tradition of not trusting the cyborg element. Although charged with working alongside us for our safety, in Smith’s sci-fi action thriller, a few of the hi-tech gadgets turn on humanity, a la The Terminator, and produce a mind blowing adventure. By the way… where is that sequel we’ve been promised?

8. Ali
Never one to shy away from challenges, Smith took on the role that would have to be the most difficult on so many levels with Michael Mann’s Ali. Smith played an icon that transcended race, time, sport and culture. Not only is Muhammad Ali one of the best boxers of all time, but he was a force of societal change during a time that saw many challenge the system. Smith’s gamble paid off in his first Academy Award nomination.

An interesting note about this film, is it also featured Jamie Foxx in a role that would allow him to break out of his comedy-only career and lead the actor down the road that would end with an Oscar for Ray.

7. Men in Black
Barry Sonnenfeld crafted one of the more original sci-fi stories that had been presented in 1997 when he released Men in Black. It’s hard to believe, but Smith was still a cinematic neophyte when he starred opposite living legend Tommy Lee Jones and their chemistry was palpable. The film was a smash hit, became the Men in Black franchise and launched a sea of imitators. And you know what they say… imitation is the highest form of flattery.

MIBs

6. Six Degrees of Separation
Smith was known as a rapper and a TV star with an abundance of flair when he took the role in Six Degrees of Separation. In hindsight, it was the boldest of moves. Portraying a gay, homeless teen with a penchant for posing as someone he’s not, the actor proved to Hollywood with his first feature that he would be a force to be reckoned with and more importantly, there was little he could not accomplish.

5. Independence Day
The alien invasion film was hardly a fresh concept in 1996. Yet, in the hands of an ensemble cast of which Smith was a mere spoke in a wheel, it became one of the biggest blockbusters of all-time. There was something about the story, penned by director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and frequent collaborator Dean Devlin, that popped off the screen. Independence Day has made such a mark on our society that it is played ad nauseam each July 4 and rightfully so.

4. Hitch
Smith proved he could command the comedy field long ago with his TV hit, so the fact he hit it out of the park with Hitch should not surprise. Yet, it was something about his chemistry with a man who “majored” in comedy, Kevin James, that made Hitch something truly special. To this day, many consider Hitch the mold from which an original romantic comedy should be made.

Hitch and Albert

3. Seven Pounds
Smith joined forces with Rosario Dawson to produce the powerful Seven Pounds in 2008 and the film quickly became a favorite of Smith fans, and film aficionados as well. The story of a man (Smith) whose adventure of discovery is nothing short of miraculous is as powerful as movies come. The seven strangers whose lives he changed will never be the same, and so too will anyone who sees this film.

2. I Am Legend
Serving as the only actor (or actress) in a film is a risky endeavor. But, as we’ve shown frequently on this list, Smith never shies away from the impossible. In bringing the graphic novel I Am Legend to life, Smith proves he’s every much the actor as Tom Hanks, a la Cast Away, in his ability to carry a movie solo. With only his loyal German Shepard by his side, Smith navigates the streets of New York and tries to find a life beyond the apocalypse.

1. The Pursuit of Happyness
Smith’s second Oscar nomination arrived with his portrayal of the real life father who, while homeless, raised his young son (played by Smith’s son Jaden), while doing his best to climb the ladder of the American dream.

Father, Son Bonding

The Pursuit of Happyness is an astounding piece of work on numerous levels. It introduced the world to the power that is Smith’s son Jaden and if there is a man out there who did not cry in that pivotal scene where Smith holds his son for dear life while someone tries to enter their train station closet where they are spending the night, I’d like to meet them.

The film is inspiration personified and at the same time, shows the range and talent of the man that started his journey by rhyming with rhythm and turned opportunity into one of the most successful popular culture careers of all-time.
