Guardians of the Galaxy Casting News: John C. Reilly to Play Ronan the Accuser

The Guardians of the Galaxy is kind of nailing it on the casting. As someone who is completely unfamiliar with the comic, I'm excited to see a superhero movie with these people in it.

The latest awesome person to join the cast is John C. Reilly (Anchorman: The Legend Continues), who we knew was offered a role recently, but is now confirmed. Reilly will play Ronan the Accuser.

John C. Reilly in The Dictator

Reilly joins Chris Pratt, who plays the film's lead, Star-Lord, the half-alien half-human who ends up on the run with a group of ex-cons who possess a highly coveted object.

Ronan is part of the Kree race of aliens. He possesses superhuman strength, and a magical hammer (NO not like Thor).

Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness), Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, and Benicio Del Toro (who may be playing Thanos) round out the cast. James Gunn directs the film, which will premiere August 1, 2014.

Man of Steel Earns $21 Million in Midnight Opening

The definition of a "Midnight" opening is becoming pretty loose. It's not hard to image that in the near future, movies will just open Thursday morning instead of Friday.

Advanced, Thursday night screenings of Man of Steel began at 7:00 pm, and from those screenings Man of Steel earned a very respectable $21 million.

Henry Cavill Stars in Man of Steel

$9 million of that came from strict Midnight showings, while the remaining $12 million was a result of the early advanced screenings.

Still, that places Man of Steel 7th all time for late-night openings. For comparison, Iron Man 3 earned just $15.6 million on its first night.

Man of Steel is poised to have a good weekend, with predictions ranging from $90-130 million. Check out our Man of Steel review to see what we thought of Zack Snyder's origin story, which is meant to kick off a Warner Bros./DC Comics cinematic universe.

Ryan Gosling is featured in the new poster for Only God Forgives. Check it out:

Only God Forgives Ryan Gosling Poster

The color palette of Nicolas Winding Refn's new film looks pretty cool. From the trailers and posters, including this one, there seem to be a lot of bright, saturated colors, with tons of contrast between warm and cool.

Gosling plays Julian Thompson, an American who runs a boxing club in Thailand as a front for a criminal operation. When his brother is murdered, his mom flies to Thailand and forces him to seek revenge.

Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm, Ratha Phongam, and Tom Burke also star.

The film, which reunites Refn with his Drive star, will premiere July 19. Watch the Only God Forgives trailer for a preview.

The first trailer for the perplexing new action film, Killing Season has arrived.

The film stars Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook) as Benjamin, a Bosnian War veteran (who would have been about 50 during that conflict), hiding from his painful memories in a cabin in the Appalachian Mountains.

One day, an Eastern European man named Emil, played by John Travolta with an interesting accent, shows up at his door. The two become fast friends until Benjamin learns that Emil is in fact a Serbian soldier bent on revenge (how could he have known!??)

Check out the trailer below:

Killing Season is written by Evan Daugherty and directed by Mark Steven Johnson. It will premiere July 12.

Before Midnight: Richard Linklater Reveals Magic Formula

Before Midnight director Richard Linklater is no stranger to hit films. The man behind Dazed and Confused, School of Rock and Bad News Bears is back for a third round in the "Before" series. We met Linklater for an exclusive video interview where he told us why he thinks the chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy has electrified audiences since they first found each other in Before Sunrise in 1995.

“I think that accumulation of time seeing them grow up. If you’re anywhere near their age, it becomes kind of special to see these parallel figures in your life getting a little older,” Linklater said. “They’re pretty relatable. They’re not superheroes.”

Linklater also talked about the completely collaborative process. Hawke, Delpy and Linklater holed up in an apartment and wrote the script together. It is a process he clearly cherished. "It's crazy. We just sit in a room and throw out everything," Linklater said. "We're such good friends now. We're sort of working and sort of goofing!"

Man of Steel: Hans Zimmer on How You Follow John Williams

We met Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer at the famed Clint Eastwood Soundstage on the Warner Bros. lot recently. Zimmer has crafted a soaring score for Man of Steel and given the permeation of the iconic theme and score by John Williams from the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, one could understand how he first said no when director Zack Snyder asked him.

Man of Steel: Superman in Action

Zimmer has quickly become one of the most in-demand and popular composers in Hollywood. The German-born music maven has crafted the scores to some of the most popular movies in recent memories.

His tackling the score, teased prominently in this Man of Steel trailer, is largely due to the friendship he developed with Christopher Nolan making his Dark Knight series, and that is only his most recent success. Zimmer won his Oscar for The Lion King and then went on to compose the soundtrack to Gladiator, Pearl Harbor, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Inception as part of his 159 title resume.

Even though he’s had enormous success, the idea of tackling a Superman score was utterly terrifying. See, Zimmer grew up a huge fan of Williams.

“It starts off with me kicking and screaming saying I don’t want to do this, it’s too much responsibility. John Williams is the master. He casts a huge shadow. What do I have to say that John hasn’t said? I grew up loving John Williams’ music. I remember listening to the score of Close Encounters and thinking, ‘This is one of the important pieces of 20th century concert music.’ I didn’t know you could do that in films,” Zimmer said.

Hans Zimmer Photo

“He’s been a huge influence on my life, except the last year where I forced myself to not listen to anything he’s done. I only saw Lincoln two weeks ago! I couldn’t do it to myself.”

Once he agreed to do the score, Zimmer never looked back and in fact, misses everyone he worked with on Man of Steel. “Then, you get drawn in and then you fall in love. Then, when you are the most in love… they say, ‘You’re done.’ Then, there’s the missing this family. It is a struggle,” Zimmer said.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this without everybody. The beauty of it is the collaborative process. The reason I love working on film is you get to speak to the actors, the writers, the DP.”

Zimmer may have joined the Man of Steel project out of respect for his friend, Nolan, yet he clearly has a new friend in Snyder. “With Zack, he is so visual. He’s a great artist. Half of our language together, he’s not using words. He’s drawing something. You try to not let your brother down. I grew up loving comic books.

When asked why, after so much resistance, did he finally say yes to scoring Man of Steel, it truly came down to camaraderie.

“Chris Nolan’s my friend and you want to hang out with your friends as much as you can. I don’t get out of the studio much, so you might as well surround yourself with people you love. Also, it was Zack starting to talk about the story which I knew meant I didn’t have to do a parody of a John Williams score. I could go and have my own voice,” Zimmer said.

And he was also drawn to the light, rather than the darkness that had permeated Nolan and his collaboration for the last decade.

Kevin Costner Man of Steel

“The things he was talking about meant something to me, especially after nine years of darkness in The Dark Knight. Suddenly, there’s a thing I haven’t done since Backdraft, which is to celebrate the first responder -- that person who doesn’t turn away from the car crash, who actually comes towards it.”

Zimmer sought to compose a “humble” score, given that the Superman character is about as unassuming as superheroes get. He also saw it as a tribute to those who rush towards danger in our society.

“I thought one of the things Zack and Chris were talking about was, ‘Let’s celebrate these people that the news doesn’t speak about. Let’s celebrate a farmer and his wife who take in a stranger.' That’s real,” Zimmer said. “I wanted to write a humble score, because there’s something so dignified about those people.”

Oldboy Red Band Trailer: Why Did I Imprison You for 20 Years?

Days after we got the visceral-looking Oldboy poster from director Spike Lee, the filmmaker has delivered the red band trailer for the thriller. The story follows a man who was kidnapped after being framed for his wife’s murder. Josh Brolin plays the former advertising executive, who, as we see in the teaser, is kept in a room and haunted with visual images on a TV that include current events and home-looking movies about his daughter growing up without him.

When Brolin is inexplicably released, he embarks on a journey of vengeance for his lost decades, while simultaneously trying to make up with his daughter and clear his name. Along the way, he enlists the help of Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley (soon to be seen in Elysium). And as we see from the Oldboy trailer for the film due October 25, Samuel L. Jackson is one nasty fellow.

The Avengers 2: Vin Diesel to Star?

Vin Diesel, according to his Facebook page, has taken a meeting with Marvel Studios. And it appears the The Fast and Furious franchise star may be heading into the legion that is the superhero collective making up The Avengers for The Avengers 2. Check out the pic he posted below and tell me that doesn’t mean what we think it means.

Vin Diesel at Marvel Studios

Of course, there is no confirmation from Marvel and no indication as to what role he would play. But, Diesel did say this:

"Marvel meeting today. Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed...P.s. Thanks to Our page, for pushing to make it happen... you know I get tunnel vision with my work... and after that meeting today... wow!"

Given that Diesel used the word “vision” in his post -- perhaps he could play the android Avenger, who first appeared in the Marvel comic in 1968. Or… we think a match made in heaven is Diesel as Giant-Man. Either way, we think it’s a given that the world of The Avengers is getting more crowded with Diesel’s addition. We previously reported that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are in the sequel.

And this may be too small of an imagining of what the meeting was… could the superstar be talking to the famed studio for a project all his own?

We’ll be talking to Marvel head Kevin Feige in San Diego for Comic-Con when they bring Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World and you know the Diesel question will come up!

We’ve seen the amazing The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones trailer, but the studio behind the sure-to-be blockbuster has never shown us the world they’re making of Cassandra Clare’s bestselling book series like in this new clip.

The featurette showcases the cast and filmmakers talking about the movie, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the epic fantasy tale. The cast, including Lily Collins (Clary Fray), Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace Wayland) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Valentine Morgenstern) -- who says the film is about “mortality and immortality” -- all take us inside the magical world of Clare.

Lena Headey is Jocelyn Fray, Clary’s mother, who tries as long as she can to shield her daughter from her destiny. “She wants to keep her safe,” Headey says in the featurette.

Director Harald Zwart describes it as a “world that we walk amongst everyday, it’s just we just can’t see it.”

Well, we cannot wait to see The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones when it lands in theaters August 21.

Saving Mr. Banks Trailer: Mary Poppins Will Fly off the Pages

Walt Disney has premiered the first trailer for Saving Mr. Banks, starring two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in the true story you won’t believe is so true. As we saw from this first Saving Mr. Banks first photo, Hanks is Walt Disney and Thompson is P.L. Travers -- author of the iconic Mary Poppins.

Disney is trying to get Travers to give him the rights to her book and its title character to make it into a big screen musical.

As you can see from the first teaser from Saving Mr. Banks, that is no easy task. And as is said in the trailer, Disney will need to work all of his magic to make sure that Mrs. Travers is on board with what will, we know, become one of the greatest movie musicals of all time.

Saving Mr. Banks has Oscar contender written all over it as it premieres this upcoming holiday season and will surely reshuffle our Top 10 Tom Hanks movies!

Out of the Furnace Trailer: Sometimes Your Battles Choose You

It’s been a busy week for Christian Bale and his latest film. First, we got two Out of the Furnace photos, then the Out of the Furnace poster, and now we have the film’s first trailer.

Russell Baze (Bale) is not thrilled with his prospects. He works a job at the local steel mill, as did his terminally ill father (Sam Shepard). His brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from war, and with little opportunity around him, he gets sucked into a crime world led by Woody Harrelson’s character.

The film also stars Zoe Saldana (Star Trek: Into the Darkness), Forest Whitaker and Willem Dafoe.

The action takes a turn for the worse when Rodney disappears and the cops know nothing. Bale must leave what little comfort he has in his life and dive deep into the underworld in order to find and save his brother.

Out of the Furnace arrives in theaters November 27 in limited release before going national on December 6.

Sam Mendes Inks Deal to Direct James Bond 24

After going back and forth between Sam Mendes will direct James Bond 24 and Sam Mendes won’t direct James Bond 24… it’s official! Mendes has signed on the dotted line and he will helm the twenty-fourth edition of James Bond, and we also have a release date for the follow up to Skyfall.

Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig Skyfall

Bond 24, as it’s called right now, will open in the UK on October 23, 2015 and on U.S. screens November 6. That’s going to be some weekend as Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man will be premiering that weekend as well!

Of course we know that Daniel Craig will return as Bond, and one of the Bond girls will be Penelope Cruz… but beyond that little is known about the next 007 movie.

After Mendes helmed Skyfall to $1.1 billion in box office and wide ranging critical acclaim and its first Oscar (for Adele’s Skyfall), it seemed a no-brainer to bring Mendes back. But, we can see why he hesitated. It’s hard to top yourself.

Mendes released a statement expressing his thrill at returning to the franchise that made him want to make movies in the first place.

“I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24,” Mendes said. “I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time.”

We couldn’t be more excited as well ,as we called his Bond film in our Skyfall review, one of the best of all-time.

We recently posted the new Lovelace trailer and poster, and now TWC has given Movie Fanatic a new look one-sheet featuring the film’s star front and center. Amanda Seyfried stars as Linda Lovelace, the woman who was considered the porn world’s first big star. Only, after she hit it big with Deep Throat, she turned on the industry and rallied against it for exploiting women.

Lovelace lands August 9 and features an all-star cast beyond Seyfried and her incredible performance (our review is coming soon). Peter Sarsgaard stars as her abusive husband, Sharon Stone and Robert Patrick as her parents, Juno Temple as her best friend, James Franco as Hugh Hefner and Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale and Chris Noth as the filmmakers behind Deep Throat… a film that went on to earn $600 million.

We’ve been hearing about the Aaron Eckhart-starring I, Frankenstein for several years now and besides an I, Frankenstein motion poster, we haven’t seen too much from the film. Well, we’ve got our first image from the movie and boy, is it worth the wait. It is a shot of Eckhart, and that man who famously played Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight has never looked better… even at the age of 45!

I, Frankenstein Aaron Eckhart

I, Frankenstein is set in an alternative present world where gargoyles and demons are engrossed in a war for supremacy. Meanwhile, Victor Frankenstein has created a new being, carrying the Biblical name Adam (makes you think, no?), who holds the key to the result of the war between the factions.

The film is based on the Kevin Grievous graphic novel and joining Eckhart in the cast are Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski and Jai Courtney. We will be catching up with the stars at Comic-Con and will bring you even more details on this fascinating sounding film that arrives January 24, 2014.

Pacific Rim Exclusive: Heather Doerksen Takes Us Inside a Jaeger

Heather Doerksen had a front row seat to the magic that is Guillermo del Toro while he was making his Pacific Rim. As teased in the Pacific Rim trailer, the movie is about as huge as one can get and it is perfect for summer (our review is coming tomorrow). Doerksen portrayed the Russian Jaeger pilot, who alongside star Charlie Hunnam, was charged with saving the world from the alien monsters – known as Kaiju.

Pacific Rim Heather Doerksen

Doerksen called Movie Fanatic for an exclusive chat about how her expectations for what we see on screen compared to what she experienced while filming on a green screen and on a sound stage and of course, we ask about what it is that makes del Toro such a magical filmmaker.

Movie Fanatic: I saw the film last night and the only thing I could say walking out was, “Holy cow.” What was your reaction the first time you saw it?

Heather Doerksen: I saw it last night too and holy cow is about how I would describe it too. Once I caught my breath, I realized that it grabbed you from the beginning and doesn’t let you go until the very end. It shattered my expectations. And you know what? It also had a great sense of humor.

Movie Fanatic: Now, I know you filmed it with green screen and had to fill in so many blanks with your imagination. How did what you see compare to what you imagined?

Heather Doerksen: At first we only had photos and images of the Jaeger and Kaiju. So, we had an idea of what we were working with beyond the green screen. But, to see it come to life in the theater -- I gasped. It was so much bigger than I could have imagined and the visual, and sound effects truly blew me away. I couldn’t even imagine that big [laughs]. I have a pretty big imagination, and this was even bigger than that.

Heather Doerksen Photo

Movie Fanatic: Those suits you have to wear to “pilot” the Jaeger. I know you do all this backstory to find the center of your character. But, what was it like when you put on those massive suits?

Heather Doerksen: That’s another thing I love about working in acting is every single person working on the set can bring something to your character -- it is a team effort. When I show up on set, I have her internally. But, when I get there, especially for Guillermo’s film, there is so much that is added to your character externally. All those people really help me realize the character and that incredible armor… that did it for me.

Movie Fanatic: Guillermo del Toro is such a visionary. What was the experience like working with him?

Heather Doerksen: The experience of working with Guillermo, I can’t put my finger on what it is he has that makes him so special. There is just so much. On the set, it is the furthest thing from a dictatorship. It was more like a family. There were constantly people laughing and joking. He is able to get the most out of everybody so that we are all giving as much as we possibly can to this project. This was six months of our lives. At the end of the shoot, everyone was extremely proud of what we had done, but also I felt like there was a hole in my heart now that it was over.

Movie Fanatic: What did you learn from him?

Heather Doerksen: What I learned from him is to really know the world that you’re in, really research it. Get in there with your imagination and creativity. Don’t hold yourself back. I was also impressed about how he never let anyone censor him and his vision.

Now is the Time for The Incredibles Sequel: Open Letter to Pixar

$
0
0

With Monsters University ruling the world for Pixar and their continued success with the Cars franchise and Toy Story movies, we wondered: Why no The Incredibles sequel? Well... Pixar, we have a memo for you.

The Incredibles Poster

Dear Pixar,

Now, it has become clearly apparent that we need a sequel to The Incredibles. Your fear of sequels and prequels has been abated with time. So corral who you must, and let's get this done.

Back when The Incredibles arrived on screens in 2004, to make a film like that for Pixar was an almost half-decade endeavor. Now, the process has sped up, as has the quality of the film animation itself. So, if one was to present a script to Pixar for a follow-up, we could conceivably have The Incredibles 2 in theaters by 2016.

What are we waiting for?

Demand is there; since its release, The Incredibles has soared to one of the famed Northern California studio's most popular movies. In our What is Your Favorite Pixar Movie Poll, it is currently tracking near the top… and it is ranked among ones that have been nominated for Oscars! And currently, it's tied with Toy Story. Yeah, I know... pretty impressive.

Costume sales (as will be seen at this year’s Comic-Con) only further enforce the idea that the popularity of The Incredibles has exploded since the film arrived. DVD and Blu-Ray sales continue to be high as new generations of kids (and adults!) are introduced to the super human Parr family each year.

It seems like a formula for success, doesn’t it? So, what is the hold up? Stars Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter are certainly available and have repeatedly said they’d return to the Pixar family for a follow-up. Yet, there is no The Incredibles sequel in the plans for the studio that often plans its slate a decade in advance. Given that it is animation and it doesn’t matter how old the stars get, i.e. they will never be “too old” to portray the superheroes, we can wait.

But, as the calendar goes by and those years pass… we don’t want audiences to get too far away from the initial film’s release. Movie Fanatic begs you, Pixar -- get those ducks in a row and make The Incredibles 2. We guarantee it will be a blockbuster.
