The combination of Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington proved too much for any other movie out there as their 2 Guns shot to the top of the box office this first weekend in August.

Mark Wahlberg Denzel Washington 2 Guns

The other big film to open this past week was The Smurfs 2, which had actually two extra days of box office since it premiered on Wednesday, July 31. But those two extra days did not matter as the sequel to The Smurfs opened in third place with a disappointing $18.2 million.

Second place found last week’s box office winner, The Wolverine, adding another $21.7 million to its take. Hugh Jackman’s second solo outing beyond Wolfie’s X-Men confines has now banked $95 million.

The Conjuring continued to scare up business as it landed in fourth place with $13.7 million. The James Wan-directed horror flick is now in esteemed company by going over the coveted $100 million mark. The Conjuring has made $109 million total.

Closing out the top five, Despicable Me 2 continued its incredible run with a fifth week take of $10.4 million. Would you believe the Steve Carell animated smash now has made $327 million? Yeah, that’s pretty incredible.

Look for the box office charts to be completely different next week as a slew of new films land in what may be the busiest week of the year. Opening in the next few days is Elysium, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, We’re the Millers, Lovelace and Disney’s Planes.

Box office top 10:

1. 2 Guns, $27.4 million
2. The Wolverine, $21.7 million
3. The Smurfs 2, $18.2 million
4. The Conjuring, $13.7 million
5. Despicable Me 2, $10.4 million
6. Grown Ups 2, $8.1 million
7. Turbo, $6.4 million
8. Red 2, $5.7 million
9. The Heat, $4.7 million
10. Pacific Rim, $4.6 million

Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling In Lead to Play Batman

Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling are rumored to be in the lead in the casting process to play Batman in the sequel to Man of Steel.

As soon as Zack Snyder announced that the Man of Steel sequel would feature Batman, speculation took hold like a fever to come up with who would be the Caped Crusader. Christian Bale is done with Batman, and theories have abounded as to what the studio would want. Some clues have emerged of late, including that they want a Batman who is in their thirties to early forties.

Ryan Gosling Gangster Squad Still

The Hollywood Reporter published an article claiming that Gangster Squad stars Brolin and Gosling are not the only two who have been visiting the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank for meetings about the part. Also on the list is True Blood star Joe Manganiello, Richard Armitage, Max Martini and Matthew Goode.

Movie Fanatic believes that although Armitage, Martini and Goode are compelling choices, they don’t stand a chance. Manganiello would be perfect if they were going for a gruff Batman, but what about the suave needed to play Bruce Wayne? Given that element of the characterization that is required to play Batman, we believe that it truly is between Gosling and Brolin.

We’ve been running a poll as to who you think should be the Bat since The Justice League rumors began.

Vote now and let your voice be heard: Who should be next playing Batman!

Paradise Trailer: Diablo Cody Makes Directing Debut

Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno) is taking the director’s chair to bring to life her latest screenplay, Paradise. Julianne Hough stars as a God-fearing rural America young woman who leaves her comfy confines and heads out to Las Vegas to put the “Sin” in Sin City.

The first trailer for Paradise has premiered and it is clear even from the few minutes we see of the film that it is pure Cody.

Hough’s Lamb (yes, that’s her name) has had a rough go of it after a tragic accident. Feeling constrained by her world, she takes an “L.L. Bean bag full of cash” and heads to Vegas to find herself and grossly expand her world.

When she arrives, she meets Russell Brand’s bartender and Octavia Spencer’s (Oscar winner for The Help) showgirl and it begins a series of days she will never forget.

No specific release date has been announced other than that Paradise will premiere in October.

Riddick Trailer: Time’s Up!

You have to have hope, Riddick fans, that the latest journey into darkness with Vin Diesel and his cinematic alter ego will be a good one. Riddick has premiered its latest trailer and it is so clear, simply from the two-and-a-half minutes of the teaser, that the first film’s helmer is back with a vengeance. David Twohy wrote and directed Riddick, and the Pitch Black helmer knows this character better than anyone, save Mr. Diesel.

This latest Riddick trailer gives us more of a glimpse of the aliens that our protagonists are fighting against, and boy, do they look nasty. For lack of a better description, they look like alien zombies.

It’s been nine years since Diesel played the misunderstood anti-hero in The Chronicles of Riddick, and Movie Fanatic is quite excited for this one for several reasons. Pitch Black is as pure of a horror/sci-fi hybrid as exists and we frankly think it is an instant classic.

Also, the addition of Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff should add some serious bravado to the film. Oh, and yes, that’s the star of the upcoming Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy David Bautista you see in the teaser.

The only thing is, we have to wait until September 6 to catch Riddick in theaters.

Kill Your Darlings Trailer: Daniel Radcliffe is Allen Ginsberg

Kill Your Darlings features a bounty of classic literary icons in one film and its first trailer has premiered. Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, is Allen Ginsberg, Ben Foster is William S. Burroughs, Jack Huston is Jack Kerouac (On the Road) and Dane DeHaan (who recently posted a new The Amazing Spider-Man 2 still) is Lucien Carr.

The film premiered at Sundance to universal acclaim and will be bowing in theaters October 18, just in time for Oscar season.

The film follows the Beat movement and shows how the friendships of the above authors fed each of their creative fires. Director John Krokidas seems to have crafted the rare film that can cover the larger than life, albeit true life, tales about icons… all in one movie.

Kill Your Darlings also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Cross and Kyra Sedgwick.

For fans of Ender’s Game, August 6 is a huge day. That is when the final official worldwide Ender’s Game trailer premieres. To celebrate, Summit Entertainment has released what amounts to be a trailer for the trailer. Harrison Ford stars as an intergalactic pilot trainer who is charged with turning what are basically children into the universe’s best fighter pilots.

As seen in the first Ender’s Game trailer, the film is based on the global bestselling book and also features Ben Kingsley and Viola Davis. But this film is truly about the youngsters and what a one-two punch they have in Asa Butterfield (Hugo) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit). They star as the students who must learn to be the best in order to save their world from almost certain destruction.

The Ender’s Game character posters may have teased this world, but the world premiere trailer tomorrow will blow it wide open.

And check out our Harrison Ford Ender's Game interview to see why the superstar decided to return to sci-fi with this film that lands in theaters November 1.

In honor of the latest Thor: The Dark World trailer arriving in 48 hours, Marvel Studios has released a new still of Tom Hiddleston as Loki. What do you think he’s reading? Perhaps he’s brushing up on his Hunter S. Thompson or maybe even The Hunger Games?

In all seriousness, the fact that Loki is back for his third go around as a baddie certainly should thrill all fans of The Avengers world. But if you look closely at the Thor: The Dark World Comic-Con poster, there is much more evil coming at our hero than his badass brother.

Thor The Dark World Loki

The first Thor: The Dark World trailer certainly set the tone that this time out, our Norse God has his hands full. There is someone much more evil than Loki wielding his power this time out… and you’ll have to wait until the trailer on Wednesday to find out.

Until then, enjoy the image of Loki brushing up on some literary magic.

Ender’s Game Trailer: You Were Bred for This

The Ender’s Game trailer has premiered and we must say, for a story so complex and thrilling, Summit Entertainment could not have crafted a better way to introduce the world to their film. All you need to know about this film, based on the book by Orson Scott Card, is stated in a voice-over by the film’s star -- Harrison Ford.

The first full-length trailer has arrived and finally we have much more to go on than the Ender’s Game character posters and that all-too-short Ender’s Game teaser.

Ford is Colonel Hyrum Graff, and in his opening trailer narration he is talking to Ender, a boy played by Asa Butterfield. He tells him that when aliens invaded, they almost destroyed us and that “they will be back.” In the fight to stay alive, Ford and his intergalactic fighter pilot training program have recruited youngsters, like Ender, and they appear to have found the one who could turn the tide of the war in the young man.

Graff states that Ender was “bred for this. You see things in a way we can’t. You alone can understand the enemy. You will be the one to save mankind.”

Well, no pressure… like at all!

Ender’s Game lands in theaters in November and also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis and Oscar winner Ben Kingsley (most recently seen in Iron Man 3).

All told, this is one impressive trailer.

Muppets Most Wanted Teaser Trailer: Kermit & The Gang Go Global

The teaser trailer for Muppets Most Wanted has landed from Walt Disney Pictures and it features our favorite felt friends traversing the world and getting entangled in international intrigue.

It has appeared from even the first Muppets Most Wanted Ricky Gervais photo that the Jim Henson created characters were going to be sucked into a comedic world of spies, led by Tina Fey and Gervais.

Muppets Most Wanted lands March 21, 2014 and finds The Muppets on an international tour after they reunited in The Muppets, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams. Both those performers are nowhere to be found in the latest, and honestly as good as they were in the first film, The Muppets have always been about bringing new “human” blood to the party… so to speak!

And yes, they have changed the name of the movie from the lackluster Muppets... Again! to Muppets Most Wanted. Nice move, we must say.

Planes Exclusive: Disney Movie a “Real Dream” for Dane Cook

We met Dane Cook, star of the new Disney movie Planes, at the Santa Monica Museum of Flight -- appropriately enough -- to talk about his first foray into the world of Walt Disney. For the man who grew up on animation, the opportunity to voice the character Dusty the crop duster in Planes was priceless and up there with his highest of life accomplishments.

“I would say next to hosting Saturday Night Live, this is a real dream that was beyond anything I could have seen for myself,” Cook said in our exclusive video interview. “I grew up loving animation. I remember as a kid watching Pete’s Dragon and Bedknobs and Broomsticks -- an underrated Disney movie!”

As seen in the Planes trailer, Cook is Dusty, a crop duster who dreams of flying in speed races amongst the best in the sky.

The stand-up comedian also cherishes Disney’s rich history of putting comics in prominent roles in their films. “I love Robin Williams when he played the genie (in Aladdin -- which features one of our Top 10 Disney princesses). Not just the antics, but the heart.”

His background as a stand-up helped him with Planes, in terms of maintaining the stamina to bring it every time. “Sometimes in New York City I could be doing six or seven shows in one night,” Cook admitted. “Having that kind of energy at the ready when you get into the booth is priceless, because you have to give everything you have, every take.”

The Place Beyond the Pines DVD Review: Father & Son Story Sizzles

$

When it comes to the arrival of The Place Beyond the Pines on DVD and Blu-Ray, this is one of those home video releases that must be purchased for the film itself and not necessarily a boatload of extras.

The Place Beyond the Pines DVD

We knew that Ryan Gosling was an Oscar-worthy actor and he only enhances that opinion with his turn in The Place Beyond the Pines. And Bradley Cooper proves his Oscar nomination for Silver Linings Playlist was no fluke in the riveting tale of a small town populated by souls with big dreams.

Derek Cianfrance co-wrote the script and has directed a thriller meets emotional rollercoaster ride that is at its heart, the story of fathers and sons. Gosling, early on in the movie, learns that he has a son with Eva Mendes. Trying to provide for his newly discovered family forces him to make some tough choices, which may in fact lead to his downfall.

As shown in The Place Beyond the Pines trailer, Cooper is the father of a son, who is also a son himself to a father who never respected him. He portrays an upstate New York cop who finds his life intertwined with Gosling after the latter robs a string of banks.

The Place Beyond the Pines expands its paternal powerhouse even further by following Gosling and Cooper’s sons as they become friends, completely unaware of their fathers' connection. Cianfrance cast the young men impeccably, especially with Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) portraying Gosling’s boy.

A Place Beyond the Pines Ryan Gosling

Our theatrical The Place Beyond the Pines review found it one astounding piece of work. In fact, it is one of our Top 10 of 2013 So Far.

But, like we said, the extras on the DVD and Blu-Ray are a bit sparse. There are a few deleted scenes and a few extended scenes that had to be cut for time. After watching the film and checking out these scenes, it’s easy to see why some were cut back and some were cut completely. But, they are fascinating to watch, given the entire context of the film.

The feature commentary by writer-director Cianfrance is why this home video release would be worth a purchase. Having the man who envisioned this world provide his thoughts on the film as it builds to a boil… is frankly priceless.

Enough Said Trailer: One of Last Films of James Gandolfini

It is with a tinge of sadness Movie Fanatic brings you the first trailer for Enough Said. As you can see from the Enough Said poster, it features James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in would what prove to be one of Gandolfini’s last films.

Gandolfini died at 51 a few weeks back, but we still have his work to remember him by.

This romantic comedy, that looks like it breaks the mold, stars Louis-Dreyfus as Eva, a single mom who is dreading the departure of her child to college. As empty nest syndrome sets in, she decides to take a chance and put herself out there on the dating market. That’s when she meets Gandolfini’s Albert and Eva decides to give romance a shot.

The only thing… Albert is her best friend’s (Catherine Keener) ex-husband!

Enough Said lands in theaters September 20.

The Expendables 3: Harrison Ford is “In”

Harrison Ford has certainly been in the news today and both items are sort of surprising. Previously, Movie Fanatic reported that Ford would be down for Indiana Jones 5, given that Disney now owns Lucasfilm, and thus the quality would be worth his while. But, in a second piece of Ford news of the day, we’re honestly quite shocked.

Harrison Ford Earp

Sylvester Stallone has said since the first The Expendables that he wants Ford for a big role in his over the hill gang action fest. Well, check out this tweet from Stallone that just went live:

"WILLIS OUT," an obviously excited Stallone writes, "HARRISON FORD IN!!!! GREAT NEWS!!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!"

Wow! So, Bruce Willis will not reprise his role of Mr. Church, but Ford is in? You know, if this was fantasy football as movies, I would make that trade every second of the day.

We here at Movie Fanatic are simply beside ourselves that Ford would join that franchise that is widely considered to not be of the highest quality. But, as we said in our The Expendables 2 review, it is good fun… and nothing more. And Ford clearly just wants to have fun.

A new photo of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss has premiered from Catching Fire, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. In it, Lawrence’s Katniss is looking quite serious. But, then again, Katniss has every reason to always be so stern.

Catching Fire Jennifer Lawrence

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire trailer has got us excited for Francis Lawrence taking over for Gary Ross and from the look of Catching Fire stills so far… he has got it just right.

Catching Fire picks up as Katniss returns home to District 12 as the winner of the 74th annual Hunger Games, with her co-champ Peeta. Soon after visiting with relatives, the duo must leave home again and this time out, go on a “victory tour” that celebrates their win. Only thing, that victory lap is short-lived as President Snow has other plans for his recent victors.

The 75th Annual Hunger Games will mark the Quarter Quell and this time, it means an all-star Hunger Games battle to the death. Meanwhile, revolution seems to be brewing, and with this particular Games, Snow hopes the strong message will be received by his charges, and they will get in line.

Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters: Logan Lerman & Cast Chat Returning for Sequel

We met Percy Jackson himself, Logan Lerman, and his co-stars Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson after getting an advance screening of scenes from their Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The film lands in theaters August 7 and the sequel to Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is just another spoke in the wheel of popularity that is the works of author Rick Riordan.

Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters Logan Lerman Alexandria Daddario

When it comes to why the Percy Jackson world in books and film have resonated so much, star Lerman says it’s about stories with young people embroiled in challenging situations that appeals to the masses.

“There’s something really appealing, and especially to me growing up and even now; (the books and films are about) young people in extraordinary situations dealing with human issues, human problems, flawed characters as well,” Lerman said. “None of our characters is perfect. (In these books and films) kids get to save the world, you know? That’s crazy. That’s fun.”

Daddario, who plays Annabeth, believes that it taps into something in the youth of the world and those who were once young. “I think that it’s really hard to be a kid and hard to grow up. From personal experience we all know that is true,” she admitted.

“I think that this series shows that, no matter what you’re going through, no matter what you’re struggling with, you can still succeed. It doesn’t mean you can’t be who you want to be. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have amazing powers and abilities despite all your weaknesses. I think that’s really relatable and inspiring and it’s really cool to be part of that. I think that’s one of the reasons people love it.”

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Cast

Jackson, who grows horns and equestrian legs to play Grover, thinks that there is such pessimism in the world today, that this ever-positive in the face of danger tale rings true.

“I think young kids these days need something good to believe in. You don’t see too many books and films that have underlying, positive messages for kids,” he said. “A lot of kids are doing their own thing on the internet so to have the positive force that readers can take from this is great for this generation because they definitely need it.”

As the title of their sequel suggests, as well as is shown in the Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters trailer, the action in this film plays to the son of Poseidon’s strengths. Lerman appreciated a little magic of the movies.

“We didn’t have to get wet,” he said and laughed. “It was nice but we were on a pretty small boat a lot and it was really hot. We can’t go back and forth to land because that’s adding another hour in between shots. So we were out in the boat for a long time! We were in New Orleans and it was the summertime. It was just the heat. It was kind of difficult to work with. But other than that, it was really beautiful.”

Lerman also cherished the chance to play a character in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters that is being continually challenged. After saving the world in the first film, Jackson feels the pressure to not be a one quest wonder.

“At the end of the first one, we ended it with him being the hero and now he’s not the hero anymore. And he has that similar thought in his mind like, ‘Maybe it was just luck, that one time. That’s my thing. That’s what I’ll be known for. Let me just accept being an average demi-god,’” Lerman said. “It’s human. It’s extraordinary but it’s human.”

Logan Lerman Brandon T. Jackson Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters

When it came to returning to characters they played previously, but yet still years ago, Daddario reported that there was a fluency with the filming process that was a priceless help. “It was like going back to summer camp because you’re with old friends and there’s a familiarity so you’re very comfortable around them,” Daddario said.

“That helped us fall back into character. We all also know how to do green screen and are in different places in our lives and careers than we were for the first movie.”

Lerman can look back and is amazed how much he’s grown as a performer, but also as someone who keenly knows the mechanics of making a film. “On the first movie, we were really preparing for such a big action film with all the wire work and fighting and all that, I’d never done that,” Lerman said. “Getting into the second one, we felt pretty comfortable.”

Given Percy Jackson is a pretty popular world, the entire cast and crew knows the importance of getting things right for the millions of fans out there.

“The biggest thing for me is that it’s amazing that you are jumping into something so many young people are inspired by,” Daddario said. She too can relate. “When I was a kid I would go to Broadway shows and wait out back for the actors. They were like gods to me. So to be in the opposite position now to inspire someone… it’s kind of cool.”

Even though he made a splash in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Lerman said that he currently is most noticed for being the center of the Percy Jackson world.

“It almost goes without saying that the majority of people that would recognize me in my normal, everyday life from this film are kids. My family works a lot with children and it’s really nice to see that a movie can make them so happy,” he said. “That’s the most value I get out of being a part of this film.”

The Company You Keep DVD Review: Robert Redford Makes a Statement

$

0

Robert Redford is one of Hollywood’s greats when it comes to not only his acting, but his ability to tell a riveting tale as a filmmaker. Both elements are on full display with his latest… the thrilling and debate-inducing The Company You Keep.

The Company You Keep DVD/Blu-Ray

The Company You Keep has landed on DVD and Blu-Ray and features the kind of cast that one would expect in a Redford film. The film stars Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Terrence Howard, Stanley Tucci, Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, Julie Christie, Brit Marling, Sam Elliott and Harry Potter vet Brendan Gleeson.

The story truly begins as Sarandon’s former 1960’s radical is arrested for her part in a bombing from the Vietnam War protest days. Redford is contacted by her lawyer, and soon enough… we learn why. Redford’s character has been on the run since that counterculture-spawning decade. He was mistakenly listed as a member of the group that did the bombing and rather than fight to clear his name, he simply ran. His running is now catching up with him as LaBeouf’s reporter begins to uncover the layers to the mystery.

As The Company You Keep trailer teases, the film raises many questions about war, peace and how we as a society properly debate, rather than destroy each other.

Our theatrical The Company You Keep review found the film riveting, and the DVD and Blu-Ray should further expand the audience for a film that should be seen.

Robert Redford Stars in The Company You Keep

When it comes to extras on the home video release, they are compelling, informative and thoughtfully put together. The highlight for Movie Fanatic is Behind the Scenes: The Movement which finds the cast and crew discussing the movement that inspired a group of young activists to form the real-life the Weather Underground.

The behind the scenes of the film featurette takes on a unique presentation in that it follows the film from writing the screenplay, through the casting, rehearsals and filming of the movie -- rare indeed to get that kind of depth. Also included is the red carpet premiere footage as well as the New York press conference that gives you an inside look at the actors and filmmakers talking about their gem.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: Terry Crews Pays Tribute to Mr. T

Terry Crews had two huge reasons to leap at the chance to tackle the role of Earl in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. First, he admitted that he already is naturally a colorful character and second, Crews feels he would not be where he is today without the man who played Earl in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Mr. T.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 Cast Photo

We caught up with Crews for an exclusive interview where he details his obsession with animated films, why Mr. T made him the superstar he is today, how Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 has made him a hero at home and what it is about the world of invading food that excites the masses.

Movie Fanatic: Is there a big difference for you playing a character for an animated movie versus live action?

Terry Crews: I am an animated character anyway.

Movie Fanatic: Yes, you are!

Terry Crews: So, I gave it all. I don’t think there’s a big difference. Every actor is basically animating a character. You have to put life into it whether it's claymation or live action. I took it the same way. This is where my challenge was: Mr. T. had already done it. That was big, big shoes to fill. Mr. T is the man. First of all, where were you when you first met Mr. T?

Movie Fanatic: I was at home watching The A-Team. No! It was Rocky 3.

Terry Crews:Rocky 3! When you see him with that mohawk, he was a force of nature. I still get goosebumps watching him. He changed everything. Now, I’m like, “Oh, man.” Then I thought about it like this, “How many Batmans are there out there?” I took it on like that. I was just going to take the Earl character and do what I do. Don’t try to be Mr. T. Be me! Be Earl! There is a way to improve it. I’m so happy with it. Mr. T gave me his stamp of approval. Without him, there would be no me. I started working out because of Mr. T.

Terry Crews Picture

Movie Fanatic: Are you an animation fan?

Terry Crews: You know, in the last seven years I’ve gotten most of my entertainment from animated movies. I have five kids and I’ll never forget taking them to see The Incredibles. Iron Giant is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my entire life. I was on my agent to get me into animation. I play Blade in the Marvel series now! Animation was something I wanted to master. It’s not going away. I took the whole family to the premiere of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. To be in this movie is so special.

Movie Fanatic: You being in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 must be huge in your house!

Terry Crews: I have four daughters and one son, and when he would see Earl and Cal, he’s like, “I’m like Cal and you’re Earl!” Flash forward to me getting the call that I’m going to get to play Earl. I never saw that coming. Dude! I am really Earl! My son looked at me and said, “Are you serious, Dad?!” To be in this movie means a lot to me and my family. When you look at an African American character, animated, it’s very rare. Earl is so special, and he loves his son. It meant so much to so many people, like Princess and the Frog. An animated black character... wow! We’ve never seen it. It makes it special.

Movie Fanatic: The food gets scary looking in this movie. For you, what is the scariest food to meet your demise at the hands of?

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 Tacodile

Terry Crews: The Tacodile, when I saw the thing -- they did right by putting that in the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 trailer. It made so much sense. It’s crazy. Everything else is really cute. The Tacodile… I don’t want to mess with that.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think it is about the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movies that people can’t get enough of?

Terry Crews: It’s the direction. When you look at the first one, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and now Cody (Cameron) and Kris (Pearn), they know the tone. You got to be funny and pace it up. There are some bad animated movies. When you get a movie like this and it keeps upping the stakes, it gets you. And you got Bill (Hader) and Anna (Faris), you can’t lose.

We’re the Millers Review: Family Comedy Goes to Pot

The headlines leading to the release of We’re the Millers were dominated by the fact that our favorite Friends member, Jennifer Aniston, was playing a stripper -- as seen in the We're the Millers red band trailer. Sure, it is true that her character “dances” for a living. But, that is merely the set up.

We're the Millers Stars Jason Sudeikis Jennifer Aniston

Much like Jason Sudeikis portraying a pot dealer. Those are merely vehicles for this comedy written by a quartet of writers, Bob Fisher and Steve Faber (who co-wrote Wedding Crashers), and Sean Anders and John Morris (co-writers of Hot Tub Time Machine).

Sudeikis is David Clark, a low level weed dealer who happens to live in the same building as that stripper with a heart of gold, Rose O’Reilly (Aniston). Clark has an 18-year-old kid in the building, Kenny Rossmore (Will Poulter), who -- for some reason -- looks up to him. One night, when Kenny rushes to the aid of a homeless girl (Emma Roberts) outside his building, Clark reluctantly rushes in when the kid is overpowered by a trio of lowlifes.

They discover he’s a pot dealer and not only take his backpack full of drugs, but force their way into his apartment and steal tens of thousands of dollars. Unfortunately for Clark, that money (and drugs for that matter) belonged to a drug kingpin named Brad Gurdlinger (an insanely game Ed Helms). Out the money and the product, Clark has to do Gurdlinger a favor in order to make things right or he will end up dead.

Clark has to go to Mexico to bring back a “smidge” of pot for his kingpin boss. Sitting on his building’s stoop, he has no idea how it could possibly work -- fully knowing that a "smidge" has got to be pounds and pounds. Then… it hits him as an RV with the most idiotic looking family drives up and asks for directions. He needs a family and an RV… stat!

Clark recruits Roberts’ Casey, Kenny and Rose to fly with him to Tucson, Arizona to pick up the RV, drive to Mexico, pick up the drugs and make their way back over the border as a family coming home from a vacation. Sounds easy, no?

We’re the Millers is actually not a one note comedy, something too many in the genre fall prey to. It is more of a situational comedy that recalls some of the classic TV sitcoms of the past that make you nervous for the characters you’re watching, while you simultaneously laugh at their hijinx. The Miller “family” encounters situation after situation where they should be in trouble, found out, dead or arrested and through humor (for the audience at least) they manage to find their way out of it.

But… the question of whether they make it back to the U.S. is irrelevant. As most situational comedies go, We’re the Millers doesn’t pride itself on living in reality. And that is not such a bad thing. When the foursome meet a fellow RV traveling family (led by a hysterical Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn), their patriarch’s career is a little too convenient to believe. But, like I said, this comedy is not about reality.

We’re the Millers is at its best when making you laugh. And here’s some rare news when it comes to comedy: The humor isn’t solely in the We’re the Millers NSFW trailer. So many comedies put all their cards in the teaser. Not so with this flick.

Our We’re the Millers review finds the best part of the film is the comedic chemistry between Sudeikis and Aniston. Both are no stranger to situational humorous situations and each makes the most with the script they’re given. Perhaps it’s too many chefs in the kitchen (four writers!), but there are parts of the film that don’t feel connected to the rest.

We must admit: Movie Fanatic laughed quite a bit. But, that doesn’t necessarily make it a great movie per se. But, if a film that is nothing more than a grouped together bunch of funny bits works for you, then We’re the Millers will be one enjoyable ride.
