Star Trek Into Darkness DVD Review: Does it Boldly Go?

$

Star Trek Into Darkness lands on DVD and Blu-Ray and director J.J. Abrams’ second foray to boldly go where no man has gone before was a bona fide blockbuster in the theaters. And, according to our Movie Fanatic theatrical Star Trek Into Darkness review, we appreciated the effort as well. The big reveal in Abrams' follow-up to 2009’s Star Trek is that Benedict Cumberbatch was stepping into some pretty big shoes. Before the film hit theaters… it was all anyone could talk about.

Was Cumberbatch updating the character of Khan made famous by Ricardo Montalban?

Star Trek Into Darkness DVD

Now that the film has come and gone from theaters and has arrived on home video, that mystery is gone. In fact, it even says on the back of the DVD and Blu-Ray cover that Cumberbatch is Khan.

That, of course, set off a firestorm with fans in terms of Abrams “re-doing” sacred ground that is borrowing heavily from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Movie Fanatic had no problem with the effort… and this from someone who thinks that that early 1980’s movie is the best of the series.

In the end, Star Trek Into Darkness is a balls-to-the-wall thrill ride that never lets up from its opening moments where Kirk (Chris Pine) and Bones (Karl Urban) are trying to outrun an indigenous race before they are discovered, all while Spock (Zachary Quinto) is trying to stop a volcano from ending their existence.

As teased in the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, someone from within Starfleet is acting as a terrorist. Of course, we all know now that is Cumberbatch’s character. And all of this hubbub about the sacrilege that is Khan in the Star Trek universe can be frankly dismissed as the UK actor who was previously best known for playing Sherlock Holmes, was astounding. The thing that made Khan by Montalban so amazing is that it was his performance that was legendary.

Benedict Cumberbatch Karl Urban Star Trek Into Darkness

And frankly, Cumberbatch is equally as powerful. That might not be a popular sentiment among Trekkies, but I’ve considered myself a fan of the series and never a super Star Trek fanatic. Therefore, perhaps I can distance myself and see that each actor brings something astounding to the role.

As for the movie itself, it is fast-paced, uses its characters effectively and Movie Fanatic found it an utter joy of a summer movie experience that is not lost on the home video transfer. In fact, it actually enhances it. We appreciated the ability to rewind scenes and watch them again and delve deeper into the Abrams story with the bonus features.

Now, there aren’t a ton of bonus features, but there are plenty that should satisfy the legions who clearly appreciated the movie and turned it into a blockbuster. On the big and small screen, Abrams’ ability to create the inside (and outside) of the Enterprise is pure magic. Movie Fanatic got the bonus feature and is proud to bring it to you below on how the director and his crew were able to effectively create a set that he says is integral to his actors giving their best performance.

The Creating the Red Planet feature is also fascinating in how it shows the making of an entirely new world in the Star Trek universe and the thoughts and creative juice that went into it. We also appreciated the behind-the-scenes look at how the attack on Starfleet was achieved and the technical wizardry that was required to make Cumberbatch’s Khan and his revenge folly even fiercer.

Audiences also got a view of the Klingon world (which we hope they return to for future editions of the franchise). In The Klingon Home World, the documentary takes viewers on a journey of how that world was painstakingly crafted.

Then, lastly, we have to highlight a bonus feature that is a pure stroke of genius. The Enemy of My Enemy featurette takes us inside the decision to have Khan be the villain, the thought processes behind hiding that reveal and how they managed to keep it a secret until the day Star Trek Into Darkness hit theaters.

Hot off what Tom Hiddleston said yesterday about Thor: The Dark World reshoots and how many of his suggestions were incorporated, Marvel Studios has released a new Loki poster! Hiddleston, as you obviously know, has been playing the villain Loki in the first Thor film and in The Avengers.

But, it appears from the Thor: The Dark World trailer that Loki and his brother Thor must put aside their differences to battle a common foe who not only is threatening the existence of their home planet of Asgard, but also the outer universe… including Earth.

Thor The Dark World Loki Poster

As we saw from the recent release of the Chris Hemsworth-Natalie Portman Thor: The Dark World poster, the actress’ Jane finds herself sucked into the action yet again.

Also back for more when the film hits theaters November 8, we have Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Jaimie Alexander, Idris Elba and Kat Dennings. Joining the fold is former Chuck star Zachary Levi.

Closed Circuit is a timely thriller starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall as the man and woman charged with defending the only person arrested after a horrifying terrorist blast rocks London. As seen in the Closed Circuit trailer, this job is anything but easy as, in the name of national security, much of the evidence... they are not allowed to see.

Eric Bana Closed Circuit

To celebrate the film's arrival in theaters, Movie Fanatic is presenting a prize pack that includes a $50 Visa gift card for a night at the movies, as well as a Focus Features double feature of two other politically charged thrillers from the studio’s recent past: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Debt.

As we stated in our Closed Circuit review, one can easily tell that the film is from the same people who produced Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and as such, it is an impeccable prize pack pairing of films!

Closed Circuit Prize Pack

And The Debt is a terrific companion piece as it deals with an Israeli special forces officer (played by Jessica Chastain as a young woman and Helen Mirren as an older woman) and something she did (or did not do?) decades prior that has become a moment of pride in Israeli history and their fight for independence.

Use the widget below to enter on Facebook or Twitter. There are three unique ways to enter, and by entering all three ways you can increase your chance at winning! And enter now, this prize pack’s winners will be announced September 20.

Insidious Chapter 2 Clips: What Happened After Your Son Woke Up?

Three new clips have been released from Insidious Chapter 2, and from the looks of the Insidious Chapter 2 trailer, director James Wan has done it again.

Wan gave us Insidious and it quickly became a Movie Fanatic favorite… landing atop our Top 10 Horror Movies of 2011. In the time since, Wan delivered another scary hit, The Conjuring, this past summer, and now merely months later, the horror master with the Midas touch is back with Insidious Chapter 2.

On the heels of this Masters of Scare featurette, we’ve got some new clips. The first clip begins with star Rose Byrne explaining to a police detective what happened in the moments after her son awoke in the first movie… where this second chapter begins.

The second clip features Wan, with screenwriter Leigh Whannell, talking about their latest horrors along with some downright eerie scenes from the film that lands in theaters September 13.

Our final clip is a doozy. We’ve seen the film (our review premieres September 13) and this scene truly puts the entire movie in perspective in terms of what audiences can expect.

Something has followed Byrne’s son back from where he disappeared to in the first film… and it is not the least bit friendly. In fact… it is standing right behind Barbara Hershey’s grandma! And be sure not to close those eyes as the clip continues. What is Patrick Wilson doing in the hallway?!

Wilson returns as Byrne’s husband and he gives one of the most uncannily creepy performances in recent memory!

Machete Kills Stills: Charlie Sheen Protected by Jesse James?

A slew of new Machete Kills stills have been released by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Several are noteworthy, including our first look at Antonio Banderas' character and Mel Gibson's heart (you'll see what we mean).

But, the standout has to be the one of Charlie Sheen (or as he is going by in this film, his given name, Carlos Estevez) as the President of the United States being protected by Secret Service Agent... Jesse James?!

Also making her presence felt in this latest batch of stills is Michelle Rodriguez in a few below that feature the actress as a patch-over-her-eye badass.

But back to Gibson and his heart. See, from what we've gleaned from the story, the photo of star and titular character Danny Trejo gazing at a human heart (on the right below) is actually that of Gibson's character. See... we knew Gibson had a heart!

Amber Heard makes her first appearance since last week's Machete Kills stills that featured her uber-violent beauty queen, known as Miss San Antonio.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Release Date Moved Back

Sure, we got that title of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales a few weeks back and we knew we could expect it July 10, 2015. But now news has arrived that it will not hit screens until sometime in 2016.

Johnny Depp is Jack Sparrow

From the sounds of things, directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are thrilled to get going… so what’s up with the delay? Insiders claim that it has to do with the fact that Disney wants to ensure they have a solid fifth installment of the series.

But, if you ask us…

It has to do with the fact that 2015 is looking to be one crowded blockbuster after blockbuster year. It had to start with the news earlier today that Ant-Man moved up its release date to within days of when Dead Men Tell No Tales was due. Toss that in with the fact that Avengers: Age of Ultron is due that May and that Star Wars Episode VII will certainly hit theaters at some point in 2015. Oh, and then there’s that Batman vs. Superman thing.

Some may say that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales blinked in a game of cinematic chicken. We prefer to think of it in terms of the fact that Disney is not only one of the best in the business, but also the most profitable and you don’t get that way by accident.

Star Trek Into Darkness Exclusive: Bruce Greenwood Talks Legend of Pike

As Star Trek Into Darkness heads onto DVD and Blu-Ray (check out our Star Trek Into Darkness DVD Review), Bruce Greenwood phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive chat where he lets us in on why he thinks this sci-fi institution is still so resonant after decades.

Star Trek Into Darkness Bruce Greenwood

We had to know, first and foremost, what it meant to this veteran actor to be the character Pike… a Star Trek universe icon -- after all it was Pike who brought Captain Kirk into Starfleet in J.J. Abrams' first Star Trek.

Greenwood also let us in on not only what makes director J.J. Abrams not just such a fine sci-fi wizard, but also a storyteller, and also if there is any chance that his Pike character will return in subsequent films.

Movie Fanatic: We all know J.J. Abrams is an amazing director and sci-fi wizard. But, what about Abrams, to you, makes him a good storyteller as you saw on the set of Star Trek Into Darkness?

Bruce Greenwood: He’s very connected to emotional lines. For an actor, that’s one of the first things I look for to see if there’s continuity of emotional experience where one thing leads to another. He’s very dialed in to that. From my first conversations with him, it was clear that that’s one of the things that he likes to keep intact. That’s what makes storytelling, for me, gripping. The audience is connected to the characters and the audience can follow how they are feeling.

Star Trek Into Darkness DVD

Movie Fanatic: Speaking of character, your character Pike has a long lore when it comes to Star Trek characters. In your career, what does it mean to play this character that is so adored by Star Trek fans?

Bruce Greenwood: I had no idea what I was getting into [laughs]. Once I started doing the research before we started shooting the first frame of the first movie, I realized that it was something that I would relish for the rest of my life. It has been that. It has been one of those things that I’m incredibly grateful to be a part of it. Even now that my contribution is already a memory, it is a wonderful thing to be a part of. I’ve met some fantastic people and I’ve gotten to be part of a storytelling tradition and character that has been around for a long, long time. That’s a real gift.

Movie Fanatic: Having a front row seat to this Star Trek world, are you any closer to figuring out why it has been so resonant for decades now?

Bruce Greenwood: With the original series, the storylines went along classical lines. It was literally classic storytelling. Those big fundamental riddles and challenges that we wrestle with when we’re preoccupied with our little lives, those are the questions that the series and the films try to engage everybody in.

Star Trek Into Darkness Chris Pine Bruce Greenwood

Movie Fanatic: Through the storytelling means that is as easy as a flashback, you could appear as Pike in the future. Do you think that will happen? Will we see Pike again?

Bruce Greenwood: Don’t think I haven’t suggested it [laughs]! Toss in some Khan blood, some cryogenics… reanimation, any number of things I could come back -- although my expectations are not high. I remember when J.J. called me for this one and said there is good news and bad news. The good news is you’re in it. The bad news is you don’t last! I was instantly suggesting, “You know… something could happen.”

Jurassic Park 4 Gets Title & Release Date: What is It?

Jurassic Park 4 is moving full speed ahead as Universal Pictures has announced that the film will hit theaters June 12, 2015 and be titled Jurassic World! The studio also released the first logo for Jurassic World.

Jurassic World Logo

The film will be shot in 3D, Steven Spielberg will produce and Colin Trevorrow will direct Jurassic World from a screenplay he co-wrote with Derek Connolly.

What we’ve gleaned from reports that have surfaced is that the plot will center on the park being run successfully for around a decade without incident (Richard Attenborough‘s John "spare no expense" Hammond would be so thrilled). Then, something goes horribly wrong.

This will be the first Jurassic anything we've seen in theaters since the triumphant re-release of Jurassic Park 3D. If the 3D is half as good as that conversion, audiences are in for a treat!

Fast and Furious 7 Starts Production: First Set Photos

Fast and Furious 7 director James Wan is "fast" at work as production on the highly anticipated film has started. Wan is already knee deep in the action, judging by the below set photos released on the film’s Twitter account.

Fast and Furious 7 Set Photo

The biggest news among the tweets is about the rumored casting of Kurt Russell, who was “almost about to join #Fast7. He would play the father of Jesse, and he would be Toretto’s villain.”

So, there you have it, Russell is not in Fast and Furious 7, despite what other publications have reported.

Fast and Furious 7 Set Photos

And from the sound of the plot, it would have been pretty darn awesome. “He would work together with @realjstatham (Jason Statham, seen in the final moments of Fast and Furious 6) in the film to take revenge on Toretto and his family.”

Oh, what could have been!

Fast and Furious 7 does star Vin Diesel (recently seen in Riddick), Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson and will hit theaters July 11, 2014.

For fans of Wan, his Insidious: Chapter 2 lands in theaters September 13.

Avengers Age of Ultron: James Spader Was “Only Choice” for Joss Whedon

In a new release from Marvel Studios, Joss Whedon addresses the casting of James Spader as Ultron. From the sounds of it, if Spader did not say yes to the titular character in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon wasn’t sure what he would have done!

Avengers: Age of Ultron Logo

"Spader was my first and only choice,” Whedon admitted.

The actor, who has played villains before, has that special something that The Avengers director felt he could not live without.

“He's got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he's also very human and humorous. Ultron is not Hal (of 2001: A Space Odyssey fame). Spader can play all of the levels. He's the guy to break The Avengers into pieces."

Since in the comics, Ultron lives to destroy The Avengers and is probably their most furious foe, the casting of Spader in our minds, is a stroke of brilliance.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will premiere on May 1, 2015 in what is proving to be one busy movie season after the recently announced Jurassic World lands in June and Batman vs. Superman arrives later that summer.

DreamWorks Animation has released its first logo for How to Train Your Dragon 2 that features the return of Jay Baruchel as Hiccup and his dragon friend Toothless. The action picks up five years after the first film and although the world is filled with dragon-human peace… an uber violent brand of dragons has just been discovered that threatens the fragile balance.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Logo

Judging by the How to Train Your Dragon 2 teaser released earlier this summer, the charming visual style has remained unchanged and Movie Fanatic, for one, cannot wait to see the continuing adventures of a boy and his… dragon!

How to Train Your Dragon 2 arrives in theaters on June 20 in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D and features returning voice talent Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (recently seen in Kick-Ass 2) and Jonah Hill.

The latest Ender’s Game poster has landed and it features the entire cast for the upcoming sci-fi thriller. Harrison Ford returns to sci-fi in Ender’s Game to portray Hyrum Graff, an International Military training officer charged with turning young kids into fighting machines.

Ender's Game Movie Poster

As seen in the Ender’s Game trailer, Ben Kingsley is International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham who is overseeing Ford and his training of one particular student who may be the best ever… Asa Butterfield’s Ender Wiggin. The young man masters fight simulators like they’re a video game and gives his commanders hope that this pilot could be the key to getting the upper hand on any military conflict that comes their way.

Ender's Game also stars (as seen in the above poster) Viola Davis and Hailee Steinfeld and lands in 3D and 2D on November 1.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Paul Giamatti & Jamie Foxx Talk Being Bad

$

In the world of Spider-Man it takes a special kind of moxie to be the bad guy. With The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that could not be truer than with the casting of Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as The Rhino.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Electro and Spider-Man

It was right around Comic-Con that we saw our first footage of anything from the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man and it was all about Electro. Jamie Foxx could not have been better cast and clearly by some of his recent comments, he keenly understands what it means to not only be a bad guy, but a Spider-Man villain. "I think with all of the Spider-Man villains there is a certain empathy to them,” Foxx said.

“The way we crafted Electro -- when he's Max you definitely feel for him because he's been sort of shut out and no one really cares about him. When he does turn into Electro, it's serious venom. He really wants to hurt everybody. When he feels like Spider-Man betrays him, he really wants to hurt him bad."

Giamatti, on the other hand, knew he had to take a slightly different approach to The Rhino than is portrayed in the comics to make it work for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

"In the comic books of old, he had this suit on that made him look like a rhinoceros and it made him super strong. If there was a bank vault he would just run right through it,” Giamatti said recently. “He would butt through it with his head and he was not very smart."

Giamatti’s Aleksei Sytsevich, he feels, very much embodies the classic Russian persona. “He's a Russian mobster. Russians are always good villains,” Giamatti said. Fans of the comics might also notice a slightly different suit than has been used prior.

“I have a particular kind of suit, but I don't think I'm supposed to talk about it. I have an ability to just destroy things. My accent is pretty hammy. I loved doing it. It seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible. It was really fun."

Fans of Spidey have to wait until May 2, 2014 for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone returning to their roles originated in Marc Webb’s first film.

Jurassic World: Pitch Trailer Teases What Could Be

Fresh off the announcement that the Jurassic Park 4 title is Jurassic World, a “pitch trailer” has emerged online. Producer Frank Marshall immediately took to Twitter to say that what is seen below will not be in the next Steven Spielberg-produced film. But, what it is and who it is from speaks volumes about what we can expect when the fourth Jurassic Park film lands in June of 2015.

The video was shown at a Star Wars convention in Germany recently and was produced by Iain McCaig, the man responsible for the concept art and design of Darth Maul.

Oftentimes special effects teams and other film artists will create a reel to give producers an idea of what to expect from them when the production actually gets going. All we can say is if Jurassic World looks half as vast as what is seen above, we are in for a treat.

Star Trek Into Darkness DVD: JJ Abrams & Cast Chat Their Endeavor

There could not have been a more perfect locale to catch up with Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams and cast members Simon Pegg, John Cho, Alice Eve and Peter Weller than the California Science Center in Los Angeles. In the shadow of the Space Shuttle Endeavor, recently added to the center’s collection, Movie Fanatic chatted up all things Star Trek and the arrival of the Star Trek Into Darkness DVD, Blu-Ray and digital.

J.J. Abrams Simon Pegg Star Trek Into Darkness DVD Premiere

The locale’s importance was not lost on the film’s director. “It’s an amazing thing. It’s one thing to make a big fantasy action adventure movie. It’s another thing to be humbled by the actual ship that has traveled into space as many times as this has. It’s an incredible thing to remember that this is not just all fantasy… this happens,” Abrams said.

As it is rumored that Abrams will hand over directing duties to someone else for the third Star Trek chapter in his trilogy, we asked Abrams if he never films another frame of Star Trek, what he felt he accomplished and what the “endeavor” meant to him.

“I feel lucky to have been involved in something that has meant so much to so many people,” Abrams admitted. “You can’t please everybody all the time but we did the best we could to tell a story that was funny and exciting and surprising and full of adventure that tried to honor the things that came before it but also blaze a new trail.”

As seen in this Star Trek Into Darkness DVD clip, Abrams put supreme importance on building elaborate sets to not only enhance his actors' performances, but the enjoyment for the audience.

“The most important thing is that it makes it feel more real when you’re actually shooting something that is real. There’s a tendency to use green screen and then put things in later. It was quite important to us that we, as much as possible, have practical sets because our eye can tell when something is tangible and real and when it’s not.”

Star Trek Into Darkness DVD

Pegg, who plays Scottie, swung by to talk, and the man who has found recent success with his The World’s End that he co-wrote with longtime collaborator Edgar Wright, may just be almost prouder of his time on the Enterprise -- particularly getting in on some action in this one, as seen in the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer!

“I love a bit of action. It’s always fun as an actor to get in on it and to break a bone, to feel skull cracking underneath your knuckle,” Pegg said and smiled. He is kidding, right? “Not always on purpose!”

Gathering at the California Science Center was nice for Pegg who just completed traveling the world for The World’s End and will ship off to Australia tomorrow to start filming Kill Me Three Times. “It’s nice to get back together,” Pegg said of the Los Angeles gathering. “We all get on very well. We all relish each other’s company. We all do different stuff and we come back together and it’s a little reunion.”

Sulu himself, Cho, was the next to stop by and he shared his most treasured moment of the entire Star Trek experience. “One of the best things I did that was associated with the movie was a Google chat with actual astronauts. They all said they were fans of Star Trek,” Cho said.

Well, then there’s also the chance to collaborate with someone he believes is a once in a lifetime filmmaker. “J.J.’s a very complete storyteller, the most complete I’d ever met. From the script, relationships with actors and the tech stuff, I’ve never known someone who was a born storyteller as him.”

That was something reflected in our Bruce Greenwood exclusive interview too!

Alice Eve Photo

Eve, new to the franchise as Dr. Carol Marcus, upon getting the part in the sequel to Star Trek said she immediately dove into the world that spans decades. “To be part of the universe like Star Trek has been phenomenal. And the interest and obsession with the world that Roddenberry created has actually been understandable for me after learning so much about it, because it’s so well constructed,” Eve said.

When it comes to why Abrams is such a wizard at sci-fi (after all, Abrams is directing Star Wars Episode VII), Eve can pinpoint why. “He can fathom the future in a way that a lot of people find hard, myself included,” she said and laughed.

Finally the film’s true villain, in our opinion, Peter Weller came by and extolled the virtues of why after so many decades, Star Trek tales still tantalize. “The magic is in the story,” Weller reported. “When you have a story that transcends just the genre of science fiction, and deals with sanctity, safety, family and war politics, then it’s not just about special effects.”

Last week we featured the first photo of Daniel Radcliffe in Horns, and it was quite a sight. Movie Fanatic has a few more photos from the film, courtesy of EW, that features a behind-the-scenes shot of the former Harry Potter star getting his head ornaments.

We’ve also got a nice romantic shot of him and his onscreen girlfriend (played by Juno Temple). Their relationship is integral to the plot because it is her murder that drives the story. Radcliffe’s character is never charged with the crime, but many in the town believe he did it. The fact that he awoke one day with those titular horns probably doesn’t help his case either.

Lastly, we love the shot of Radcliffe coming out of a bar -- smoke billowing and those Horns raised high!
