The Wolf of Wall Street has released two TV trailers that will be airing everywhere over this holiday weekend. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a real-life Wall Street trader who made millions upon millions of dollars in the 1980s, only to have the feds shut him down because he did so illegally. So yeah, he kind of spent 22 months in jail.

Jonah Hill also stars in The Wolf of Wall Street in a cast that includes another A-list actor in Matthew McConaughey. The Wolf of Wall Street is directed by Martin Scorsese and is the fifth collaboration between him and DiCaprio.

Check out this first The Wolf of Wall Street clip and check out the film when it premieres on December 25.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman may not hit theaters until March 7, but that will not stop them from getting into the holiday spirit. 20th Century Fox has released a Thanksgiving-themed Mr. Peabody and Sherman poster that shows off the world’s most intelligent dog in his pilgrim best.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman Thanksgiving Poster

As we saw in the first Mr. Peabody and Sherman trailer, Ty Burrell voices the titular dog, who is actually probably smarter than 80 percent of the humans out there! Max Charles voices Sherman, the boy who is adopted by Mr. Peabody, and as the film shows, even the most unorthodox of situations can produce a perfect family.

So, as Mr. Peabody says, “Bring Your Doggy Bag,” and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Island of Lemurs Madagascar Trailer: Nature’s Greatest Explorers

Morgan Freeman is one of the best nature documentary narrators out there. His work on Born to be Wild (one of our Best Movies of 2011) and March of the Penguins is legendary. He’s back narrating a fascinating look at lemurs, who are described as “nature’s greatest explorers” in a new film from Warner Bros. that lands April 4, 2014. The film has released its first trailer and it is simply gorgeous.

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar reunites Freeman with Drew Fellman, who wrote and produced Born to be Wild, as well as director David Douglas, who was that film’s director of photography.

Filmed completely on IMAX 3D cameras, the film takes a look at the astounding world of Madagascar. Not many know that lemurs arrived on the island millions of years ago and have evolved into hundreds of unique species, who are unfortunately extremely endangered.

The film also has debuted its first poster!

Homefront: James Franco Says It's Good to be Bad

Homefront allowed James Franco to go a little nuts as the villain, a meth lord who makes life hell for Jason Statham. As previewed in the Homefront trailer, Statham is a former DEA agent who moves to a small Southern town with his young daughter to pursue a quieter life. Little did he know that the community would be a hotbed for meth dealing, with Franco’s evil villain at the top of the food chain. Franco could have been one of those actors who does his own stunts, but given what a pro Statham is, Franco decided to leave it to the professionals.

Homefront James Franco

"Jason does all of his own stunts. I don’t. My guy gets really beaten up,” Franco told Movie Fanatic. “There was a stunt guy that was just happy to do that. I’ve done a lot of movies with fight scenes, and you know when you’re working with somebody that’s good. Fight scenes are really more like dances than they are fights, because you’re depending on your partner to do the right move at the right time.”

Franco did do a few of his own fight scenes -- he’s just being modest! “A fight scene has a lot to do with the other person,” Franco admitted. “We had one fight scene in the movie. It was like, ‘Yeah. Okay. This is great. Actually I’m not scared here. I feel great here because Jason knows what he’s doing. I’m not going to get hurt.’ Whereas, somebody that hasn’t done a lot of fight scenes is not tough and will probably hit my hand with the sword or punch me in the face by accident.”

Franco also welcomed the chance to play a villain, but he insisted it be more than a one-dimensional character that so many villains can be. And it so is, as we report in our Homefront review.

“I think it helps serve the movie if he’s not just a bad guy that’s there as a device, that he is somebody that does bad things, and you don’t condone his actions, but you can understand why he’s doing it. What that meant to me was that maybe he shouldn’t do the meth, that this is a business. He sees it as a business,” Franco said.

“When he goes after Jason’s character, maybe he has a little fun with the torture of it, but it’s more that he sees this guy as just a key to helping his business, to helping him achieve his dream of getting out of this town and just making something of himself, which is something that we all do.”

The actor admitted that there is something in his portrayal of Gator in Homefront that is universal, whether we want to admit it or not. “Whatever our business is, we want to succeed. We want to achieve. And so, we can all understand that side of it where he crosses the line that hopefully none of us crosses. ‘Well, okay, I’ll hurt somebody else in order to achieve my dream.’ We don’t go with him there, but it’s like you can understand the human motivation behind what he’s doing,” Franco said.

“That’s why I thought the meth is just his way. It’s just what he found. It’s the way that he thinks he can get out of this wicked little town.”

Homefront James Franco Jason Statham Winona Ryder

When Franco got the script written by Sylvester Stallone, all the elements were there… but he wanted to tweak a little something. “I read it and I saw that it was a well-constructed movie and that there was a good villain that I could have a lot of fun with. I thought there were two key things to be brought out with Gator. In the original script I read, he did everything that was in the script, but he didn’t really care about his sister (played by Kate Bosworth),” Franco said.

“She was addicted to drugs and he would hold it over her head. So I went to the book. I looked at the book and realized that in fact there was a much more complex relationship to be had, that he actually loves his sister and cares about her and probably likes her more than she likes him.”

He also sought to improve what was on the page between Gator and the girlfriend character played by Winona Ryder. “Winona’s character, it was written like I was the boss of the relationship. I thought it would be more interesting if he was insecure about this relationship, and it turns out she was seeing one of the other gangsters before, and it upsets Gator,” Franco said.

“I thought it would make it a little bit more unusual that he could be insecure in this relationship rather than just, ‘I run this show,’ and that she’s the boss of the relationship until the end.”

Jurassic World: Director Colin Trevorrow Reveals Timeline

We know the Jurassic World release date and it’s part of the season that could make 2015 the best summer ever. We also know that Bryce Dallas Howard has been cast. But, what we don’t know is when Jurassic World will take place. Director Colin Trevorrow has now given us that much and in the process stressed that this is not a redo of the series started by Steven Spielberg.

Jurassic World Logo

"Reboot is a strong word," he said. "This is a new sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of Jurassic Park."

So, the rumors about the plot are true, we’re guessing. Looks like the theme park has been doing swimmingly, and then something goes horribly wrong.

Mandela Long Walk to Freedom Review: Idris Elba Electrifies

The first thing that has to be said in our Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom review is you would be hard-pressed to find someone other than Idris Elba to do a better job portraying the man who is much more than even the words icon or legend could describe. Elba plays Nelson Mandela from his early twenties until after he is elected president of South Africa. For an actor, and for the film itself, it is quite an endeavor to capture a life so extraordinary, especially one based on the autobiography written by the man himself.

Idris Elba Mandela Long Walk to Freedom

Mandela’s story is about as well known as there is out there. But what is fascinating is there are still things for the audience to learn about the man who would lead a revolution to reverse decades of hate, racism, economical, physical and psychological warfare on a majority of people by their fairer skin minority. There are things he does as a young man that add a human element to the man who has achieved almost saint-dom in the mind of so many.

There is also his relationship with his wife Winnie (an astounding Naomie Harris) that is treated with the utmost care, as previewed in the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom trailer. As our story begins, Nelson is more of a violent revolutionary and Winnie is the quieter one seeking a more peaceful means of change. As Nelson is imprisoned, director Justin Chadwick paints a picture that sees their relationship moving like a see-saw. He grows more non-violent and she gets more violently revolutionary. It is no wonder the two grew apart over the decades he was imprisoned. It wasn’t only the separation that doomed their marriage.

Idris Elba Stars In Mandela Long Walk to Freedom

The thing about Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom that one must know heading in is it is long. The film clocks in at over two-and-a-half hours. But, there is nothing that can be cut! In fact, we wish there was more to explore in the life of a man that so many people think they know, and in reality there is so much more to know. It does not feel long and when we finally get to the iconic moment that was broadcast on television screens across the globe -- Mandela dancing with his adoring public outside his home after his release – there was not a dry eye in the house.

What else is fascinating in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is how filmmakers painted a picture of the man as a realist. I believe that is the utmost of importance in this age of political divide. There could not have been two parties further apart in their beginnings, politics and life experience than the whites who ran South Africa and the man who everyone knew would eventually lead the nation. Yet, Mandela knew he had to work with his jailers in order to achieve a peaceful future for the nation he so adored. And in showing that aspect of the Nelson Mandela story, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom may have achieved its greatest victory.

Weekend Movie Preview: November 29, 2013

It may be cold outside, but inside the movie houses of the country, it looks to be like summer with five new releases hitting screens. Disney releases its latest gem, Frozen, Jason Statham battles James Franco in Homefront, Nelson Mandela gets the biopic treatment, Spike Lee reinterprets a Korean classic in Oldboy with Josh Brolin, and Jennifer Hudson gets in the holiday spirit with Black Nativity.

Frozen: Disney has created their best movie since The Lion King with their latest, a movie inspired by the classic fable The Snow Queen. Idina Menzel is Elsa and Kristen Bell is Anna, and the two are sisterly princesses who have kept a family secret for years. Seems that Elsa has the power to turn everything she touches into ice and snow. Things are going fine, until Elsa's coronation where she inadvertently puts her kingdom on ice... literally.

Haunted by what she has done, she runs to the hills where she can live in solitude. That is, until her sister heads out into the winterly landscape to bring her back and reverse the curse. The songs are top notch, the performances as astounding and Josh Gad steals scenes left and right as the snowman Olaf. For more, check out our Frozen review.

Homefront: Statham is back in action, and this time, he has to deal with Franco's meth dealer. All Statham wants is to raise his little girl in peace. That is not going to happen and we all know it! Statham shows a softer side, as we state in our Homefront review, and Franco has a ball playing the baddie. Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth also star in this action fest that should please the action hero's fan base.

Oldboy: Lee is nothing if not someone who likes to ruffle feathers. And what better way than to bring an American version of a beloved Korean cult classic to screens?! Oldboy stars Brolin as a not-so-likeable guy who winds up kidnapped, framed for his wife's murder and stuck inside the same room for 20 years. When he is released for no reason at all... he embarks on a trek of revenge that may find him experiencing the greatest horror of them all. Lee is as gifted a filmmaker as ever, as we state in our Oldboy review, and Brolin is also up for the complex task.

Mandela Long Walk to Freedom: IdrisElba electrifies in the biopic of the iconic South African leader, as reported in our Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom review. It's a difficult task to capture a life so extraordinary in a two-hour movie. But, filmmakers manage to do that, and actually leave us wanting to know more about a man that we think we know... yet really have just began to scratch the surface of his brilliance.

Black Nativity: Hudson is joined by an all-star cast, including Forest Whitaker and Angela Bassett, in a holiday musical that is based on the play by Langston Hughes. The film is a little uneven, but you can forgive it by the end of the film that will have audiences singing all the way home because of its uncanny ability to be heartwarming and heartfelt. Our Black Nativity review also notes that as the only true holiday film out this weekend, it is the one that will get you firmly in the spirit of the season!

Paul Walker has died at the age of 40. The Fast and the Furious franchise star was killed in single-car accident in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Saturday.

Sources confirm that Paul Walker died along with another unidentified victim at a car show held to raise money for Philippines typhoon relief efforts.

Breaking news of Walker's death was followed by a report claiming this is a hoax. However, it's the story alleging the hoax that is the actual hoax.

The actor's camp has confirmed the horrible events of today.

New Regency, the studio behind Fast & Furious, Tweeted: “It is with great sadness to report that @RealPaulWalker has passed away. We will miss you. #RIP”

Walker‘s rep confirmed the tragedy in a statement, writing:

“It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide."

“He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news."

"Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences.”

The Glendale, Calif., native broke out in the 1990s with Pleasantville, Varsity Blues, She's All That and The Skulls before 2001's The Fast and the Furious.

He most recently reprised his role as Brian O'Conner in the hit franchise in Fast & Furious 6 in 2013, and was most recently seen in the film Hours.

Fast & Furious 7 was/is scheduled for a 2014 premiere.

Mortal Instruments City of Bones DVD Review: Shadowhunters Unite!

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is part of a book series that has sold almost 24 million copies globally and fan interest is about to go much deeper. The film version arrived earlier this year and it did well enough to warrant filming the second Mortal Instruments book that will also star Lily Collins as a woman who discovers she is gifted with supernatural powers and will play a large role in a classic battle of good versus evil.

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones DVD

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones trailer shows that this is a visually stunning world, created by director Harald Zwart that surely will please the legions of fans of the book series by Cassandra Clare.

Collins stars as a woman who, as she arrives at a fateful birthday, sees things in the world around her that she never noticed before. Her mother (Lena Headey) has tried to shield her from this world, but now time has run out and whether mom likes it or not, Clary Fray (Collins) is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime filled with peril, passion and the supernatural.

Our Mortal Instruments: City of Bones review found the film satisfying and visually stunning. That aspect is not lost on the DVD and Blu-Ray release. And the bonus features for the home video release should also further fan the fire of that passionate Mortal Instruments fan base.

The Blu-Ray has an exclusive feature that we found simply stunning. Interactive Lineage Tracker allows viewers to deeply explore all of the characters in Clare’s world. For fans of the series, this is better than the best Christmas gift ever. It also shows the extent with which the author has given deep thought to her Mortal Instruments world and speaks to the power that is coming at fans with subsequent films.

The Deadly Attraction feature shows off why the casting of Collins and Jamie Campbell in his role as Jace Wayland could not have been better. The two discuss finding the balance of push and pull that is not only central to the plot of Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, but the entire series as a whole.

The Mortal Instruments City of Bones Jamie Campbell Bower Lily Collins

Bringing Them to Life is also a delightful feature where filmmakers and the entire cast talk about their characters and the role they play in the bigger picture of Clare’s world. Those members of the “cast” that are not human get the spotlight in the Entering The Shadow World bonus feature, which shows off the extraordinary talents of the movie's special effects artists in creating the creatures of Clare’s world.

We were thrilled with the addition of the Into the Shadows: From Book to Screen featurette. When a book is as insanely popular as The Mortal Instruments series is, having a look at how it made it to the big screen is essential. And with Into the Shadows, they achieve that and more.

And for those who want to delve deeper into just how filmmakers created those breathtaking action sequences, the Descendants of the Cup documentary is simply stellar. As this is a home video release geared towards the young and the young at heart, the music video Almost is Never Enough by Ariana Grande featuring Nathan Sykes is like a cherry on top of a delicious sundae that is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Book Thief author Markus Zusak never thought in a million years that his book about an orphan in World War II Germany who discovers a love for the written word and, even more so, her adopted parents would catch on. Millions of copies later, we’re sitting with Zusak and The Book Thief director Brian Percival to talk about that bestselling book becoming a film that has just cracked the weekend box office top 10.

“I think it’s pretty ridiculous,” Zusak said of the book’s success. “I thought it would sink without a trace! It’s all a bit of a crazy dream.”

As can even be seen in The Book Thief trailer, Geoffrey Rush and Sophie Nelisse play the father-daughter tandem with touching brilliance. Percival found their familial chemistry a pure gift. “They were the sort of actors that I dream of working with,” he proudly said.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer will land on Thursday, and in the meantime, Columbia Pictures has us seriously thinking about the next chapter in the series from director Marc Webb. They have premiered a “Triptych” poster that features Spider-Man ready to defend himself (and the city) from a trio of villains. Wait, what?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Triptych Poster

Look closely and you will see two we already know about, Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as Rhino. But, who is that in the middle? Is that Green Goblin? Yes sir, and it looks like Dane DeHaan as Green Goblin no less.

Guess the anticipation level for that Thursday trailer debut for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has just gone nuclear!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 lands in theaters May 2.

Out of the Furnace: Christian Bale & Casey Affleck on Their Movie Brotherhood

Out of the Furnace features Christian Bale and Casey Affleck as brothers trying to make the most of their lives in the economically depressed Pennsylvania steel community that they call home. Affleck portrays a war veteran who has done several tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and Bale has been solidly working at the nearby steel plant until fate lands him in jail.

Out of the Furnace Christian Bale Casey Affleck

As the Out of the Furnace trailer shows, Bale emerges from his imprisonment to find that his brother has been taken under the wing of a local crime leader (Willem Dafoe), and his underground street fighting ring (led by Woody Harrelson).

We met Affleck and Bale to talk about the keys to being cinematic brothers and both admit it was a case of professional and personal mutual admiration that led to the fantastic feeling both emit on screen.

“It just happened,” Bale admitted. The actor even said that he and director Scott Cooper would not make the movie if Affleck said no. They didn’t even get to rehearse. There was just movie magic between the two stars. “I didn’t actually meet Casey until we were doing a camera test in Pittsburgh a couple days before we started! We just got thrown in the deep end, which was nice. That was it. Casey’s a (expletive) great actor and he was wonderful to work off of.”

Affleck interjects. “We spent weeks and weeks together,” he said and laughed.

Bale turned to his co-star and smiled. “I forgot all of it! I was just blasted off my head! Sorry, mate, I just forgot,” he said.

Affleck was absolutely impressed with his co-star and had admired his work from afar for years. “He just makes everyone better around him and is an anchor of reality. If someone’s in a scene with you and they’re listening to what you say and they’re looking at you in that way, then you’re having a real conversation and the whole thing feels a little bit more real in some way,” Affleck said.

“Christian was very patient. I did and said some things that just immediately made me trust him, and it just went smoothly from there.”

Out of the Furnace Casey Affleck

Given how many soldiers are returning from war in America with very real issues, Affleck took the role seriously “[I] was watching some documentaries, things like that, then talking to some veterans and just trying to piece together what that might be like for somebody,” Affleck said. “These guys now in these wars have done more tours than the average soldier in other wars just because it’s not a volunteer army and they’re careerists, so they spend a lot of time over there with a constant level of anxiety.”

The key for Affleck and what his character does, even in the face of painful reality, is knowing what a man or woman thinks like when they return from the horrors of war.

“Understanding what those symptoms are when they come back with some post-traumatic stress disorder and the depression, the frustration, the alienation, and feeling like people don’t want to hear what their experiences were, how lonely that can feel,” Affleck said.

Then… an actor just goes to work. “You just hope that all that stuff imbues and it becomes just background noise and you hope whatever research you’ve done bubbles up to the surface at the right time when you’re playing a scene that’s an argument about a beer and then suddenly you’re sharing some experience that you weren’t even planning on sharing. You just hope that you’ve done the work so in the right moment it clicks and makes sense.”

Christian Bale Out of the Furnace

Filming on location in the rust belt of steel country also informed things for the Out of the Furnace cast, which includes Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness), Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepard.

“It obviously helped so much being on location. If you understand what I mean, the difference between performing for the rectangle of the camera versus a world being created, and the world finds things within that,” Bale added. “There’s a huge difference in that because what it takes away is performance. You don’t feel like you’re performing. You’re just doing it and you’re existing.”

Affleck found that not much had to be done to the area to make it as stark as the Out of the Furnace story reflects. “A place like where we were, which has a real story just in the way it looks, to see a place that was once one thing and is now something else -- it has a lot of atmosphere,” Affleck said.

“If there’s a lighting set-up that takes 20 minutes, you can go into another room and you’re not just staring at the back of a bunch of plywood; you’re actually in another room in your own house where you’re supposed to be. It helps to ground you.”

The Smurfs 2 DVD Review: So Smurfalicious!

$

0

The Smurfs was a surprise hit when it landed in 2011, although given the decades-long adoration fans have had for the little blue creatures… perhaps it was not all that surprising. The Smurfs 2 landed in theaters this past summer and now Sony Pictures Animation has released the film on DVD and Blu-Ray, chock full of extras that are sure to please Smurfs fans.

The Smurfs 2 DVD

You can see what we thought of the movie itself from our theatrical The Smurfs 2 review. Basically, kids will love it and that’s where this particular incarnation was a little different from the 2011 movie. The gang heads to Paris when Smurfette is kidnapped by Gargamel (Hank Azaria). Many secrets are revealed (you won’t get spoilers here!) and Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays reprise their roles from the original that mixes animation and live action.

The biggest surprise has to be the addition of Brendan Gleeson to the cast, who has an utter blast with the silly mayhem.

When it comes to the bonus features on the DVD and Blu-Ray, the highlight has to be The Legend of Smurfy Hallow, which is a new mini-movie that was inspired by The Legend of Sleepy Hallow.

The Puurrfect Companion: Azreal’s Tail takes a closer look at Gargamel’s feline friend… always a popular character. It shows viewers how the animated cat was created using a live action cat that was transformed into a digital double, and then incorporated with real emotion and expression from actor Frank Welker

Given that the storyline is integral to The Smurfs 2 movie, the bonus feature Daddy’s Little Girl: The Journey of Smurfette is a don’t miss. The documentary traces the origins of the only girl in the Smurf world from creation of artist Peyo to the voiced by Katy Perry incarnation we enjoy today.

The Naughties in The Smurfs 2

The Smurfs 2 DVD and Blu-Ray also includes some deleted scenes, which will surely add to the joy of the little ones. Also, we adored The Naughties! The Tale of Hackus and Vexy, a feature that introduces Smurfs fans to its two newest characters, Hackus and Vexy. The actress and actor behind them, Christina Ricci and J.B. Smoove, also chime in on what it means to them to join the Smurfs universe.

The award season is officially underway with the Independent Spirit Awards nominations released, and now the New York Film Critics Circle announcing their winners. In what may be seen as somewhat of a surprise, they named David O. Russell’s American Hustle Best Picture. Many had thought that 12 Years a Slave would take top honors, but that film has the honor of winning a Best Director trophy for Steve McQueen.

American Hustle Bradley Cooper Christian Bale

American Hustle also took home Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence (is she on a roll or what?).

In what should be a preview of an Oscar victory (in our humble opinion), Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for Blue Jasmine while Best Actor went to Robert Redford for All Is Lost. Many are saying that Redford is a lock for the Oscar too, but we’re not too sure. That may be the most difficult category to predict this year.

Best Supporting Actor went to Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club, who should easily win the Oscar in the same category.

Inside Llewyn Davis: Oscar Isaac on Getting Folksy with Coen Brothers

$

From the moment that first Inside Llewyn Davis trailer arrived, the Oscar buzz for the latest from the Coen brothers started. Much of that has to be based on the performance of star Oscar Isaac.

He stars as a frustrated folk singer in 1960s Greenwich Village who has gotten his “friend” Carey Mulligan pregnant. His career is in the toilet, and just when things seem like they could get no worse, he finds out a long kept secret that has him in a car with Garrett Hedlund and John Goodman heading to Ohio.

We caught up with Isaac for an exclusive video interview where the actor talked about the joys of playing Lewis, someone who lives by the power of id only. “I like not having to ask for sympathy at all or worry about charming anyone. It was freeing to live in his circumstances,” Isaac said. “He’s not one who feels much. He just expresses it.”

There is much for Isaac to be proud of with his announcement that is his performance in Inside Llewyn Davis. But years from now when he thinks back on the experience, he admitted to us that those scenes in the car with Goodman will be ones he’ll never forget.

“It was surreality, without a doubt,” Isaac said. “I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that that happened.”
