It’s a huge day for fans of Spider-Man as earlier today we posted a The Amazing Spider-Man 2 poster that hinted at the return of Green Goblin. Now, director Marc Webb has released five new stills, along with a few comments about what to expect from his sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.

Webb was talking to USA Today and admitted that “Oscorp is the evil empire.” It appears that the casting of Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn could not be more perfect. We all know he does evil well!

We know all too well that Jamie Foxx is Electro and this latest still of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 villain is simply gorgeous!

From the look of our last two stills, it seems as if Electro is busy getting Spidey all sorts of electric in the film that hits theaters May 2, 2014.

The Wolverine: James Mangold Talks "Revelation" of Hugh Jackman as Logan

As The Wolverine Unleashed DVD and Blu-Ray hits stores, we caught up with director James Mangold for an exclusive chat to talk about his blockbuster film starring Hugh Jackman. The extended edition is a director’s cut and shows even more of the awesomeness than was released in theaters. Mangold talks up the joys of having a wider audience see more of his great work, and also chimes in on the once-in-a-lifetime moment that is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

The Wolverine James Mangold and Hugh Jackman

Mangold also dishes that final scene that had X-Men fans abuzz and what it was like to literally hand the Wolverine baton on to Bryan Singer for his X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Movie Fanatic: For you as a filmmaker, how is it in this age of director’s cuts and extended editions to have more of your film viewed, like with The Wolverine Unleashed now out on DVD and Blu-Ray?

James Mangold: It’s thrilling. People are really involved in filmmaking and the process. There is a really large audience of people making their own movies and interested in how movies are made. Part of the joy of offering alternative cuts and deleted scenes has always been that you’re allowing people to experience the world larger, wider, richer than they might have seen in the tighter theatrical version. That is nourishing me because it allows the audience to understand what the process is of making movies.

Movie Fanatic: What bonus features on this Blu-Ray and DVD release are you particularly excited for people to see?

The Wolverine DVD/Blu-Ray

James Mangold: We have so much additional material in the extended edition that I love. The behind-the-scenes documentaries have become so sophisticated. The crew shooting the B-roll that becomes the documentary footage for these pieces have become so good at capturing the vibe on set that it’s a terrific window for people who are interested in looking behind the camera. There’s so many wonderful crafts people at work on a movie. For me, when I was young following filmmakers and learning about movie making, I wish that there was this material to learn from. There is a lot of inspiration that can be gotten from these features.

Movie Fanatic: There is something truly astounding about Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It may be hard to quantify, but what do you think it is about him and this role that is so magical?

James Mangold: The magic of something that is right, whether it’s love or an actor in a role, defies easy description. I think that Hugh and his level of commitment to this character and continuing to evolve and dig deeper has been a revelation. His commitment physically through the bodywork he does is breathtaking. I also think it is such a wonderful character. The reality is that Logan is a jaundiced character with such an ambivalent relationship with society and relationships. To even right wrongs, he doesn’t see it the same way as the Dudley Do-Rights out there. Audiences really enjoy that cynicism. And at the same time, Hugh Jackman the man has so much heart that I think that he balances that cynicism of character with a goodness that you see deep inside. It gives the audience comfort and excitement. They dig his darkness, but they know that he would never hurt them. He would be their friend. That kind of connectedness with a role we’ve seen with Clint Eastwood and Dirty Harry and Sean Connery in early Bond films. It’s a natural perfect fit.

Movie Fanatic: Your work has been so diverse over the years, from Copland to Girl, Interrupted to Walk the Line to The Wolverine. Was that always something that was a conscious effort?

James Mangold: I always look for something fresh to do. That is interesting to me. I’m always looking to compliment the last movie. Both Copland and Heavy, I wrote at the same time. Both have similar themes in different genres. Girl, Interrupted, I also wrote and was an escape from Copland. After making a movie that featured nothing but sweaty macho men, I was deliriously anxious to make a movie that featured nothing but women. After Girl, Interrupted and its darkness, the joy and lightness of Kate and Leopold was much needed for me. Each choice makes a lot of sense for me. The simplest answer is I feel lucky. It was never conscious. But, it was more the world was letting me.

X-Men 2 Hugh Jackman

Movie Fanatic: Lastly, the final scene that features Ian McKellen’s Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X visiting Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has got X-Men fans abuzz. Was that a unique experience for you to film a scene for your movie that serves as a hand-off to another director in Bryan Singer for X-Men: Days of Future Past?

James Mangold: It was really fun. Honestly, it was a great lesson in making a movie that was much lighter on plot and much heavier on character, which The Wolverine was, to do this baton at the end that was heavy on plot. Ian McKellen coming in, being one of the great heavies of film, was a thrill. For me, it was just a thrill that I got to work with Patrick and Ian, along with Hugh, which was an honor and a thrill. It is something that I am most grateful for.

Fifty Shades of Grey: Marcia Gay Harden Joins Cast as Christian’s Mother

Another day, another piece of news about Fifty Shades of Grey adding to its cast. Yesterday we got word that Rita Ora was cast as Christian Grey’s (Jamie Dornan) sister and now the Grey family is getting another cinematic addition. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden has been given the gig of portraying Christian Grey’s mother.

Marcia Gay Harden Photo

While Fifty Shades of Grey filming began earlier this week, it is clear that all the spots on the casting roster have not been filled. Hopefully with this announcement of Gay Harden’s casting, this ought to do it. The week before last, we heard that Max Martini was cast as Grey’s bodyguard.

Fifty Shades of Grey is set to arrive in theaters February 13, 2015.

Her Trailer: A Spike Jonze Love Story

The second trailer for Spike Jonze’s Her has arrived and one can see why the film is garnering so much buzz. Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are) has long been one of the most original of filmmakers working today, who possesses a vision that is unmatched. Just check out the production design teased in merely two minutes of footage in this Her trailer and you’ll see what we mean.

As previewed in the first Her trailer, Joaquin Phoenix plays a man who is, it may seem, a little lonely. When a computer system is updated in his house, he becomes infatuated with the voice that issues instructions. That voice is performed by none other than Scarlett Johansson.

Rooney Mara also stars as Phoenix’s ex, and she is not pleased with how he has managed to turn his life around… all due to a computer voice?

Her lands in theaters December 18 in limited release, before going national January 10, 2014.

What the first 300: Rise of an Empire trailer teased, the arrival of the second lands with a thud of jaw-dropping special effects and a look that should please the legions of fans who adored the first 300.

300: Rise of an Empire lands in theaters on March 7 in IMAX 3D and 2D and brings back Lena Headey from the original as well as Rodrigo Santoro, Hans Matheson, Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Callan Mulvey and Jack O’Connell.

The film is based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel, Xerxes, and although it is directed by Noam Murro, it still -- as can easily be seen in the trailer above -- is in the visual style set forth by Zack Snyder in the original 300.

Hot on the heels of those impressive Pompeii photos, TriStar Pictures has released the first trailer from Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii.

The Resident Evil creator has turned his camera on the community of Pompeii and crafted a fictional word that imagines what it was like in the fateful locale before an iconic volcano would erupt and bury its people in ash… many frozen forever.

Pompeii lands February 21, 2014 and stars Kit Harington, Jared Harris, Emily Browning, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Kiefer Sutherland.

Batman vs. Superman: Gal Gadot Cast as Wonder Woman

Zack Snyder has announced that he has cast Gal Gadot from the Fast and Furious movies as his Wonder Woman/Diane Prince in Batman vs. Superman. The director released a statement praising not only the actress, but the character itself.

Fast and Furious 6 Gal Gadot

"Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role,” Snyder said.

“We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character."

Now that we have Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gadot as Wonder Woman… looks like the DC Comics universe is starting to come together. Perhaps that Justice League movie is more likely than ever to happen!

Look for Batman vs. Superman in theaters July 17, 2015.

So, what do you think?

Is Gal Gadot a good Wonder Woman?

Fast and Furious 7: Paul Walker Death Shuts Down Production

Universal has announced that production on their Fast and Furious 7 film is completely shut down. The James Wan-directed film was set for release on July 11, 2014, and that date looks highly unlikely to still happen. It is completely the right thing to do because the cast and crew are in the throes of deep mourning and utter shock at the tragic news of the death of Paul Walker.

Paul Walker Pic

"Right now, all of us at Universal are dedicated to providing support to Paul’s immediate family and our extended Fast & Furious family of cast, crew and filmmakers. At this time, we feel it is our responsibility to shut down production on Fast & Furious 7 for a period of time so we can assess all options available to move forward with the franchise,” a studio statement read.

“We are committed to keeping Fast & Furious fans informed, and we will provide further information to them when we have it. Until then, we know they join us in mourning the passing of our dear friend Paul Walker.”

In our humble opinion, no matter what the subject matter of the film, this is the right thing to do. And given that the film series is built around cars going extremely fast, there could have been no better decision made by Universal.

Our thoughts and prayers still remain for Walker's friends and family.

Veronica Mars Movie: First Clip & Release Date Set

When we caught up with Kristen Bell for an exclusive interview to talk Frozen, we had to ask her about her upcoming role in the Kickstarter-funded and long-hoped-for movie version of her television hit that made her a star, Veronica Mars. She admitted exclusively that the upcoming Rob Thomas written and directed movie may only be the first chapter of the cinematic journey of one of our favorite sleuths.

EW also has debuted a new clip from the highly anticipated film, and it's below!

That first film, in what everyone involved hopes is the first of many, now has a release date. It was announced today that fans can expect the Veronica Mars movie on March 14, 2014.

The Jack Ryan Collection DVD Review: Tom Clancy Hero in a Box!

0

For fans of the character of Jack Ryan, the news that the hero will be back – teased in the Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit trailer– is like a Christmas gift. For those very fans of the Tom Clancy-crafted hero, a real holiday gift should be the recently released The Jack Ryan Collection on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Jack Ryan Collection DVD

The package contains all four films that featured the Ryan character: The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears. That’s three Jack Ryans for ya, with Alec Baldwin first, Harrison Ford most famously second, and Ben Affleck third.

The set starts with the first to hit theaters, The Hunt for Red October. After all these years, it’s fascinating to hear the audio commentary by director John McTiernan that is a can’t-miss for fans of the series. Also compelling is the Beneath the Surface featurette that features never-before-seen interviews with the cast and crew, including Connery and Baldwin. Then, for nostalgia’s sake, The Hunt for Red October theatrical trailer is included. That is a very nice touch.

Patriot Games arrived and introduced the world to Jack Ryan as embodied by Ford. There is no audio commentary, which is unfortunate. But, there are cast and crew interviews in the bonus featurette Patriot Games Up Close. Looking back at Ford with his first time out as Ryan, it’s an interesting look at capturing a character, especially after what we heard from Baldwin in the previous title's bonus feature. And the inclusion of the Patriot Games theatrical trailer is also a treat.

Ford as Ryan

Clear and Present Danger (one of our Top 10 Harrison Ford movies) had Ryan tackling the drug war and put him front and center on the front lines. Behind the Danger is a terrific feature that features the entire cast and crew talking about their thriller. It’s a study in character growth to see Ford talking about the Ryan role, with this film being his second time walking in the man’s shoes.

Lastly, The Sum of All Fears closes out the set by introducing Affleck (who would one day take over another iconic role… Batman). The film is probably the least known of the four Jack Ryan features, but it is no less thrilling. The addition of Morgan Freeman to any cast is never a bad thing and he goes toe-to-toe with Affleck throughout to craft a different feeling Ryan film.

The Sum of All Fears disc does include an audio commentary by director Phil Alden Robinson, as well as cinematographer John Lindley. And in what is perhaps the best bonus feature of the entire set, there is an audio commentary track by Robinson and Tom Clancy himself! With the author’s passing this past year, it is a priceless chance to see him talk about one of his most beloved characters.

The Sum of All Fears also features the most extensive bonus content of all four discs. The Making of The Sum of All Fears featurette is especially interesting because of the threat of a nuclear bomb going off in Baltimore, and we get to see how the filmmakers managed to achieve that horrific vision. On that note, the Creating Reality: The Visual Effects of The Sum of All Fears explores that horrific scene and much more.

American Hustle Debuts Two Clips: Christian Bale Meets Amy Adams & Trouble

American Hustle has released two new clips from the highly anticipated film that is set to be released limitedly December 13, before going national on December 18. Fresh off of the film’s New York Critics win for Best Picture, we’ve got two scenes from the film that shows that director David O. Russell has truly captured the 1970s on multiple levels.

Our first clip features the first meeting between the characters played by Amy Adams and Christian Bale. There is immediate chemistry between the two and we love not only the Chicago track playing in the background, but Adams’ pairing a fur coat with a swimsuit!

The second American Hustle clip features Bale in a meeting with Bradley Cooper’s FBI agent where we learn that he really does not have much of a choice but to participate in the sting operation that is at the heart of the true tale about the Abscam scandal.

For more insight into this awesome looking flick, check out the American Hustle trailer for the film that also stars Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner.

Blues Brothers Mall Chase Scene: Done with Legos!

One of the most iconic scenes in the legendary movie that is The Blue Brothers is that chase scene through a suburban Chicago mall. Who could forget John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd speeding through a shopping center with complete disregard for human safety, all while providing a commentary on what’s cool and new at the mall?!

An Australian Lego builder, Bricktease founder Duncan McConchie, was so taken with that scene that he replicated it with the little brick-based toys, and he's taken the action sequence of Jake and Elwood eluding the law to a whole new level. The dialogue is the same. The music is the same. It’s just… well, take a look!

McConchie reported that it took between eight to ten hours to piece together the almost 2500 photos it took to create the video. And while you’re in the mood, check out our The Blues Brothers quotes to remind yourself what a classic the John Landis film is.

Transformers Age of Extinction: Michael Bay Talks Close of Production

Michael Bay took to his personal website to announce that principal photography for Transformers: Age of Extinction has completed. To say he is proud of what he, star Mark Wahlberg, and his entire cast and crew have accomplished is probably too simple of a description. Well, first he had to clarify something.

Transformers Age of Extinction Michael Bay

“It is a drag talking to reporters on sets. Why? Because often times they take your words and skew things to their liking? Then the crazy, lazy game of reporting on what other writers story’s reported me saying and then suddenly it becomes skewed Internet truth. So I waste my time to restate exactly what I did say, again,” Bay said.

“No I did not ‘apologize’ for any Transformers movies. I did not say I shot the last three movies “less cool” then the new fourth installment. I was talking specifically about camera style and tone, of the first movie compared to how I shot the new installment with a very big scale, cinematic style. I was very specific in saying the first Transformers was shot in a ‘generic suburbia’ area, not trying to be cool with any cinematic flashes. I wanted it to feel like this could happen in any backyard in the United States.”

Then… Bay got to talking about filming the fourth Transformers film. Clearly he feels he has made the best one yet. Fans will have to wait until June 27, 2014 to see it. But they will have a trailer, Bay hopes, that will air during the Super Bowl. Judging by those first Transformers: Age of Extinction photos, it should be a marvel.

“So that brings me to letting Transformers fans know that we have completed our five and half month shoot. We got back from a month long shoot in China. My crew and I had a fantastic time shooting in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It was an amazing experience, and I love the country,” Bay said.

“My cast was absolutely fantastic, and a very fun group to work with. We are working hard cutting the movie right now. I think the first piece comes out for the Super Bowl and a teaser right after that. And yes, I’m very excited about this new movie.”

National Board of Review Names Her Best Picture

The critics groups are starting to name their Best Picture choices with National Board of Review announcing theirs as Spike Jonze’s Her. Just the other day the New York Critics honored American Hustle with Best Picture. If nothing else, it shows that 2013 is an astounding year for film, and look for 12 Years a Slave to pick up a couple of awards before the calendar switches to 2014. Then in mid-January, we’ll get those coveted Oscar nominations and the true awards race will be on.

Her Poster

As is often the case with awards, the Best Picture and Best Director come from the same movie. Spike Jonze took the honor for his Best Picture-winning Her, while Best Actor went to Bruce Dern for Nebraska, with Emma Thompson picking up the title of Best Actress for her work on Saving Mr. Banks.

In a surprise victory for the SNL alum, Will Forte won Best Supporting Actor for his work opposite Dern in Nebraska. Best Supporting Actress went to Octavia Spencer for Fruitvale Station. We could not be more thrilled for Spencer’s victory as we thought that perhaps her stunning turn in the true story had gotten lost over the months since it debuted. Perhaps she will get some buzz going now for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Academy Awards.

Here’s the full list of winners from the National Board of Review:

Best Film: Her

Best Director: Spike Jonze, Her

Best Actress: Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks

Out of the Furnace Exclusive: Scott Cooper on “Risky” Crazy Heart Follow-Up

0
0

How does Scott Cooper follow up the Academy Award-winning debut that was Crazy Heart? How about going dark into the depths of American economic and war weary despair with Out of the Furnace?

Out of the Furnace Christian Bale Zoe Saldana

Cooper triumphs (our review comes tomorrow) and he phoned Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview to talk about his latest effort as well as what he finds is the secret to why we love his star Christian Bale so much, how fellow star Casey Affleck is probably one of the most underrated actors working today and how he hopes that Out of the Furnace pushes America closer together.

Movie Fanatic: We have to start with the cast from Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Willem Dafoe and Woody Harrelson to Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard. When you’re getting a talented group together like this, what did you feel as a movie fan yourself seeing all these great performers in one film including a legend in Sam?

Scott Cooper: It was exhilarating to see a cast like this. I’ve long admired all of them and didn’t know them. Sam was one of my literary heroes and as an actor. And I’ve always followed Willem’s career -- he’s so distinct in what he does. And of course Woody is a national treasure in a way that is very different than what is seen in this part. And of course Christian and Casey are among the best actors of my generation. You just pinch yourself. And the fact that they have responded to a very personal screenplay that you have written, it means the world to me.

Movie Fanatic: Where did the origins of this story come from?

Scott Cooper: The producers came to me and asked if I wanted to tell a story about a man who gets out of prison and avenges the loss of his brother. I agreed, if I could personalize it. I just went off and stared at that blinking cursor and wrote Out of the Furnace. And what you see from fade in to fade out was always what I had in mind.

Movie Fanatic: Was it always set in rural Pennsylvania where the scenery is so stark and reflective of the story?

Scott Cooper: I grew up in the coal fields of Virginia. When I was traveling with Crazy Heart, I came across Braddock and it reminded me of home and had this melancholy beauty to it and very photogenic and atmospheric and had fallen on very difficult times. The whole movie is really about America and its past and the last five turbulent years. Braddock had suffered greatly. It was the decay of the American Rust Belt. I set it in Braddock and did a ton of research about the town and was really going to make it there or not make the film because it was going to be a character that was as important to the narrative as was Christian’s character or anybody.

Out of the Furnace Christian Bale

Movie Fanatic: Your cinematographer and production designer I’m sure were really busy. But, that landscape so contributed to the look of the movie… even seen in that first Out of the Furnace trailer.

Scott Cooper: I know it inspired her and everyone involved. You can’t overstate shooting in a place like Braddock and how it infuses the feel of the entire film with a sense of authenticity and realism.

Movie Fanatic: Whether Crazy Heart or Out of the Furnace, you seem to be a filmmaker that surprises us. Was that always the goal?

Scott Cooper: Yeah, it was… you never want to repeat yourself. Crazy Heart had that warmth and humor, but also had this melancholy tone that this film has. But, I wanted it to tonally feel different and use the landscape to inform the characters.

Movie Fanatic: Christian and Casey are some of the greats of our generation. Have to start with Christian and I’ve loved him since Empire of the Sun... you had a front row seat to the magic that is him. What makes him so special?

Scott Cooper: He’s fully committed and extremely bright and considerate. He has no ego whatsoever. He is transformative and an actor of great range and versatility, and there are very few of any generation like that. We’re seeing his best work now. And in this part I think you’re seeing something you’ve never seen before in Christian and that is a deep sense of vulnerability, gentleness combined with a sense of strength, courage. He had the most difficult role to play in the film. There’s nothing that you’re really grabbing onto like in The Fighter or American Psycho, but you’re grabbing onto a human being in ways he never has before.

Out of the Furnace Scott Coper Christian Bale

Movie Fanatic: Something that struck me with Casey is how much you saw in his face…

Scott Cooper: I like to strip away dialogue from most people so that they can display emotion and complexity of it, not verbally. He’s underrated, although he is not underrated by the actors and directors who work with him. Maybe, he’s under-known, I should say. He was able to play the torment of his character with a look. He was able to impart a great deal of loss and the horrors of war with a look as opposed to a guy who has to say that stuff.

Movie Fanatic: What do you hope people take away from Out of the Furnace?

Scott Cooper: That we’re living in tough times. We’re fighting wars on two fronts and not taking care of our soldiers when they come home. They have post-traumatic stress disorder, and the fact that I lost a sibling at a young age, I know those themes. Sometimes, they’re tough to take, but I learned that I can’t be concerned what people think about you. You have to grow as a filmmaker and I have to work as unfiltered as you can. There are a lot less risky ways for me to follow up Crazy Heart -- that is for sure!

Movie Fanatic: People will see this film and be reminded of the reality of what is going on in our world. Do you hope that people leave the theater thinking, or are you hoping for even a slight call to action?

Scott Cooper: Yeah, I think so. Too often, the people I write about in Crazy Heart and in this film, these are the people who live on the margins. These are people who are misrepresented or under-represented in American film. I hope people think more about them. I hope people think more about our soldiers who are returning. We think about the fact that we live in a very partisan congress and nation. It feels that we were ushered in with a great deal of hope and in order to see that hope through, we all have to work together.

Although X-Men: Days of Future Past is not set to appear in theaters until May 23, 2014, director Bryan Singer has revealed the title and release date for its follow-up. Look for what he is calling X-Men: Apocalypse in theaters May 27, 2016.

X-Men Apocalypse Character Photo

Apocalypse is not simply a description of what could happen to the X-Men world in the next film, but as fans know, it is the name of a character who made his debut in X-Factor #6. He is the first mutant ever recorded and was born En Sabah Nur in Egypt. He, like Magneto in later years, believes in the need for mutants to take their rightful place as the most powerful souls on Earth. He embodied the phrase: Survival of the fittest.

As we previously reported, Alice in Wonderland 2 is arriving… on the same date as X-Men: Apocalypse! That's quite a weekend, even if it's two-and-a-half years away!
