Anchorman 2 Clip: I’ll Take the Job

In the latest Anchorman 2 clip, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is being pursued by a hotshot TV producer to take his Action News Team to New York City for the chance of a lifetime. See, they want Ron to anchor this newfangled thing called the 24-hour news network.

As seen in the Anchorman 2 trailer, the film brings back Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner. Look for Anchorman 2 when it hits theaters December 18.

In the above clip, we love Ron’s first reaction to the idea. “That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” Burgundy says. Yeah, 24-hour news… that’ll never work!

Out of the Furnace Review: Christian Bale Burns With Subtlety

$

0

Out of the Furnace may be an ensemble film with a stellar cast, but it is Christian Bale who commands every scene he inhabits. Bale stars with Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker and Sam Shepard in the dark and gritty powerhouse from writer-director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart).

Out of the Furnace Stars Christian Bale Zoe Saldana

Bale and Affleck star as brothers, Russell and Rodney, living in Braddock, Pennsylvania. As seen in the Out of the Furnace trailer, the small town has seen better days and the economic downturn has hit them especially hard. Russell toils in the local factory while Rodney goes from home to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq like a revolving door.

Rodney clearly has issues, from post-traumatic stress to an overall feeling of just being completely lost. Where he does find solace is hanging out with his brother… and under the tutelage of Dafoe’s John, fighting in an underground street boxing ring led by the sociopath played by Harrelson’s Harlan.

Bale has to go to jail for a few years (no spoilers here as to why!), and when he emerges a free man, it isn’t long before his brother goes missing. Bale suspects that Harlan is involved and even recruits his uncle Gerald (Shepard) to help. It is at this point that the story that is already grey in color and tone gets downright dark.

Cooper clearly knows this part of the country and shows it off throughout Out of the Furnace. As a product of the coal mining community, he knows about mining towns and the economic depression that breeds social and emotional despair that leads good-hearted people to do things they normally would never consider. And the writer-director tells his story with an even hand that never judges or preaches. There are no real right and wrongs, only shades of grey.

That is, except for Harrelson’s Harlan.

Out of the Furnace Woody Harrleson

Harrelson has never played a character as downright vicious and evil as Harlan. That’s saying something for the guy who co-headlined Natural Born Killers. He explores new depths of filth and fear-inducing character traits that make you yearn for sunlight when leaving the theater to get away from his dark shadowy turn. Harrelson is astounding.

And Affleck does more with his face than with words, and that is exactly what Cooper needed from whoever was going to play Rodney. He may be an actor one “big” movie away from being a superstar like his brother. But perhaps if he was, he never would have gotten roles like he has with Rodney.

If there’s anything that is lacking in the film, our Out of the Furnace review feels it takes a little while to get where it’s going. But, then again, that may be simply a case of witnessing the slower moving way of life in the Rust Belt of America. Hope is at a minimum and it can be difficult to watch. But what Cooper also does is have an ending that is so brilliantly set up by the journey, that when Bale strikes the pose he takes in the Out of the Furnace poster, you are more than ready for him to pull that trigger.

Reasonable Doubt Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson as Serial Killer!

Samuel L. Jackson has been many things in his career, but a serial killer is not one of them. Judging by the first trailer for Reasonable Doubt, he is just the bad ass to go toe-to-toe with Dominic Cooper’s (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) prosecuting attorney in a game of cat and mouse.

Jackson (now appearing in Oldboy) portrays a man who is charged in the hit and run death of a man one fateful evening. See, it was really Cooper’s character who committed the crime and his prosecutor throws the case for fear of incriminating himself. Overcome by his guilt, he decides that he will find a way to make Jackson pay. Upon digging deeper, he discovers that Jackson may be the man who police have been looking for who committed a series of murders.

The only thing… Jackson knows Cooper was the man who committed the murderous hit and run. Let the games begin.

Reasonable Doubt lands in theaters January 17.

Is Hugh Jackman Done with Wolverine?

As Movie Fanatic previously reported, Hugh Jackman and The Wolverine director James Mangold are developing a sequel to their blockbuster hit. What is coming to light now, thanks to an interview Jackman did with Vanity Fair, is that the actor might not return to the role that made him famous. "I don’t know whether or not I will do this next movie,” Jackman said.

The Wolverine is Hugh Jackman

As he has been Wolverine for over a decade now, it makes sense that he would shift into a producer role for the franchise, but in addition to him starring. But, from the sounds of it, it would take one heck of a storyline for Jackman to don those claws again after he appears in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

“I am really proud of The Wolverine and I am excited to develop something with Jim Mangold from the beginning because that is a great ride,” Jackman said.

“That’s exciting, to see what we come up with but I have a very high expectation of what it would need to be [for me to star in it] and if it doesn’t reach those, I won’t be doing it."

Stay tuned as this story develops. We know what a grueling physical challenge it is for Jackman to become The Wolverine, and perhaps he’s just ready to put down the blades. The issue is, audiences just adore him in the role and sometimes that’s the most difficult part… to know when to walk away while you’re still on top. With The Wolverine’s success and X-Men: Days of Future Past looking amazing, perhaps that time… is now.

Oscar Visual Effects Nominees Down to 10: No Man of Steel?

The Academy Awards has narrowed the films that could qualify for a nomination for Best Visual Effects to ten films. There are some obvious choices on the list, such as Gravity, Pacific Rim, Iron Man 3 and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. But, the inclusion of Elysium and Oblivion are nice surprises.

Gravity Photo

Most years, only three films earn a coveted spot as nominees, so this list could be whittled down by two thirds. Here’s who the Academy has announced is eligible to get a nomination when Oscar nods are announced January 16.

Elysium
Gravity
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Iron Man 3
The Lone Ranger
Oblivion
Star Trek Into Darkness
Thor: The Dark World
Pacific Rim
World War Z

Who isn’t on the list is a bit of a surprise… Man of Steel. Could it be another case of DC Comics losing out to its rival Marvel? Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World are on the list. No love for Superman?

Tell us who you think should get a nomination!

Last Days on Mars Review: Liev Schreiber is Lost in Space

$
0
0

The thing that is most compelling about Last Days on Mars is how it actually is quite vague. You never get the idea when the film takes place. The audience knows that this team -- led by Liev Schreiber’s Vincent Campbell -- has spent the last six months on Mars doing scientific work, searching for proof of life, and that it took six months for them to get there. And no spoiler here… the ending is about as indistinct as can be! But, all of that actually is a good thing and only adds to the overall tone and suspense of the film that is a good old-fashioned thriller at heart.

Last Days on Mars Liev Schreiber

The title of the film says it all in terms of placing the film firmly in its plot. We meet Campbell out on an investigative dig, waiting in a transport vehicle for a prickly scientist (Olivia Williams) to finish her work. She knows that the team has less than 24 hours before they board a ship and head home to Earth. And she will be damned if the next team gets the credit for an astronomical find that her team is on the brink of. Yet, she reluctantly packs it in… swearing the whole way back to base.

Then, when a fellow scientist gets a clue as to what she was about to discover… he heads out quietly and finds what they have been looking for. Only… well, you know from the Last Days on Mars trailer, this is not going to work out very well for anyone.

Last Days on Mars’ enemy is a fascinating one. It is a virus. Our alien doesn’t come in the form of pointed ears and claws that kill. This is a villain who kills from within and worse, turns its victims into space zombies with the sole mission of killing everyone else.

Director Ruairi Robinson handles the tension with an even hand, never spilling too much of the plot and keeping the audience on their toes. The film is not for everyone. It is clearly a science fiction film that knows it is a genre movie and never tries to be anything else.

Liev Schreiber Last Days on Mars

Schreiber is fantastic, getting out of his comfort zone in a film that requires him to anchor the story, while still supporting the ensemble. His character is haunted by something that happened on the way to Mars. Again, quite unclear, we never quite learn what it is. But that only adds to the suspense of what is going on because the viewer does not know what it is he is haunted by, only that it could rear its head at the most inopportune of times. Schreiber handles the subtleties of that with grace and aplomb and there is no better actor to handle such a part.

Our Last Days on Mars review knows it is unlikely there will be a sequel. Yet, Robinson manages to end the film with more questions than answers. And frankly, that’s how a solid science fiction movie should conclude. The film is firmly in the middle of the pack of the genre, not quite of Alien caliber, but nowhere near the bottom of the sci-fi barrel. As we said, fans of the science fiction world will enjoy their Last Days on Mars.

December Movie Poll: Which is Most Anticipated?

In many ways, December has become an entire summer movie season in one 31-day span. Hollywood has sought to capitalize on the country’s desire to get out of the cold and perhaps get a reality break from all that holiday shopping, and as such, has given the masses a plethora of choices when it comes to cinematic entertainment.

Just this month we have the highly anticipated sequel to Anchorman, which as we can see from the Anchorman 2 trailer has the news team heading to New York to work at a 24-hour cable news channel.

Anchorman 2 Christina Applegate Will Ferrell

There is also the second chapter in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit Trilogy, with the dwarves, Bilbo and Gandalf back in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Madea does Christmas, the final film of Paul Walker arrives in Hours, the Coen brothers return with Inside Llewyn Davis and David O. Russell follows up his Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook with the all-star American Hustle.

Then there’s Tom Hanks as Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks, that brings the making of Mary Poppins to life. Keanu Reeves returns to martial arts in 47 Ronin, Ben Stiller directs and stars in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese hook up for a fifth time in The Wolf of Wall Street and Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro battle it out in Grudge Match.

So tell us, of all these blockbuster choices…

Which December movie are you most excited to see?

Top Gun 2 and Beverly Hills Cop Reboot Are Happening!

$

After signing a new three-picture first look deal at Paramount, where he has been for years, Jerry Bruckheimer announced that several projects that have long been gestating are getting a fresh shot of adrenaline. Top Gun 2, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as Maverick from Top Gun, will be moving forward… as will a Beverly Hills Cop reboot... that perhaps might even still go by Beverly Hills Cop 4.

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun

We’ve long heard about the Top Gun 2 effort, but now with Bruckheimer looking to move with the ink still wet on his Paramount deal, look for that film project to gain serious steam. If Cruise is involved, which we bet he will be, look for him to take the role of an instructor in the Top Gun school, who gets dragged into a military conflict. His age is what puts him in the more professorial role, but Cruise’s desire to be involved in cinematic action will have him fighting from inside a cockpit and you can count on it.

As for that Beverly Hills Cop reboot, that too has long been in the works. There was a CBS pilot featuring Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley’s (Eddie Murphy) son that never got picked up. Given Murphy’s desire to get back in the limelight, look for him to be like Cruise and sign up to work with Bruckheimer again.

To which we ask… is it the 1980s again?

Philomena Review: Judi Dench Dazzles in True Tale

$

0

If Philomena does not result in an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for Judi Dench, then it is an utter crime. Dench portrays the title character, a woman of later years who awakes one day and can’t live with what haunts her anymore. As a young woman, she was abandoned by her family at an Irish convent for being pregnant from a pre-marital affair. Promptly inserted into a slave labor-like world, it got worse when one day a family arrived and took her child away.

Philomena Judi Dench Steve Coogan

The film begins with Dench telling her daughter a secret that had spent six decades in hiding. Philomena has decided that it is time to find her son, no matter what it takes.

Simultaneously we meet Steve Coogan’s Martin Sixsmith, a recently disgraced PR person associated with the British government who seeks to go back to a quieter life as a writer. When no one shows any interest in his book of Russian history, he is approached at a party by Philomena’s daughter and our journey to find her son begins.

Coogan not only stars, but he wrote the compelling script with Jeff Pope, based on the book by the real Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee. The true story is astounding and is the perfect vehicle for Dench to further show why we adore her so much.

As even teased in the Philomena trailer, Dench plays Philomena as a woman who has been scorned by life, but still has absolute faith in God and the goodness in people’s hearts. She is a simple woman, whose life has been more than fulfilled by raising her daughter and happy memories of her marriage to her late husband. In meeting Sixsmith, she finds not necessarily a compatriot, but actually in more ways an adversary. Yet, as their journey takes them from Ireland to London to America, the two grow close in ways that feel real, powerful and sincerely profound.

Coogan and Dench are a match made in heaven and it is the main reason to take in this must-see film. The pair have an ebb and flow that is as natural as can be, and even though they may be from different walks of life, they compliment each other brilliantly, which is a tribute to Coogan’s script and his chemistry with Dench.

Philomena Steve Coogan Judi Dench

Dench gives us a character unlike any she’s played before. She is a woman who has never had the finer things in life, so it is a complete joy to witness her enjoying complimentary champagne on a plane, the make-your-own omelet bar at a U.S. hotel and her eagerness to watch a pay-per-view movie starring Martin Lawrence as a woman in a fat suit!

Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) directs Philomena with such a care and love that the viewer cannot help but completely fall in love with all of the characters. There is heartbreak and hope and even a few moments of hilarity in a film that our Philomena review finds is about as perfect as can be.

Weekend Movie Preview: December 6, 2014

The weekend movie preview features Christian Bale scorching up the screen in Out of the Furnace, as well as another Coen brothers movie classic in Inside Llewyn Davis. Also, Liev Schreiber tries to get off of Mars in Last Days on Mars and Judi Dench shows why she is one of the planet's best in the touching true story Philomena

Out of the Furnace: Bale and Casey Affleck play brothers in an economically hard hit small rural town in Pennsylvania where hope is at a premium. Affleck is a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and doesn't seem to find any joy in life, except when he discovers an underground fighting ring, led by the uber-awful Woody Harrelson. While Bale toils at the local factory, he does his best to try to keep his brother out of trouble. When he goes missing, he suspects the worst... and suspects that Harrelson has something to do with it. As we stated in our Out of the Furnace review, the film is electric, powerful and dark. And it is filled with an ensemble cast who brings their best from Bale, Affleck and Harrelson to Sam Shepard, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Forest Whitaker.

Inside Llewyn Davis: The Coen brothers turn their camera on the folk music world of Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Oscar Isaac stars as the title character who has had many chances at fame, but his personality seems to keep him from achieving any. Carey Mulligan, John Goodman and Justin Timberlake are co-stars, but the standout "star" is T. Bone Burnett, who penned a soundtrack full of 1960s-sounding folk songs that permeate every frame. Our Inside Llewyn Davis review explores it further, but the Coen brothers hit all the right notes... again.

Last Days on Mars: Schreiber is part of a team of scientists on a mission to Mars to discover any signs of life. When they do, all hell breaks loose. But, not in the way so many other sci-fi movies would do so. This time out, it is a virus that infects the crew and makes their return to Earth highly dangerous and extremely unlikely. For more, check out our Last Days on Mars review.

Philomena: Dench is astounding yet again in the true story of a woman who decides that decades of regret over losing her son to adoption, courtesy of the Catholic church, have to be reversed. With a journalist (Stephen Coogan) by her side, she goes on a journey of discovery to find where he is, and to let him know she never stopped loving him. It is an Oscar-worthy performance by Dench, as reported in our Philomena review

The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition DVD Review: Four-Disc Delight

$

The Wolverine was a blockbuster success when it arrived in theaters this past summer. Now, 20th Century Fox has released it on DVD and Blu-Ray as a special The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition. Not only does it contain the director’s cut of the film, but a bounty of extras that should make not only any Wolverine fan thrilled, but X-Men aficionados as well.

The Wolverine DVD/Blu-Ray

As told to us in our James Mangold exclusive interview, the director is thrilled that audiences get to check out the additional scenes as well as extended scenes that were omitted from the tighter theatrical cut. Those new to us moments are stellar. Often is the case, additional material that was cut from the theatrical version of the film feel as if they should have stayed on the cutting room floor. Not the case with The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition.

The new scenes only add resonance and power to the overall arc of the story that had us excited the moment that first The Wolverine trailer landed almost a year ago.

Hugh Jackman has never been better as the reluctant hero, who would just assume live by himself in the woods than get drawn into some sort of right or wrong fight. But, trust us, when there is a wrong, he will right it. This time out, our story takes him to Japan to talk to a man he saved in a Japanese prison camp during World War II as the dying man’s final wish. Turns out everything is not what it seems and Wolverine/Logan gets drawn into a family fight that only has the future of that country’s most powerful and profitable corporation in the balance.

The extended and unrated cut features the first for an X-Men movie and fans will not be disappointed in what they get. The extra film footage isn’t simply window dressing as they provide new insight into the legend that is The Wolverine. And as it is the director’s cut of the film, this is how the film should be seen. There is also an alternative ending, which for appreciators of the X-Men universe… is the best Christmas gift one could get! It is also more violent, and seeing Jackman kick more butt is never a bad thing.

There’s a “Ronin” side to this story that is an impeccable fit to the Wolverine mythology. And in that vein The Path of the Ronin titled extras astound. The way it dives into a hero without a past provides clues for fans and newbies alike and we cannot think of a better feature in recent memory that achieves what this one does.

Inspiration: A Ronin’s Journey is a beautifully packaged documentary on how our hero got to where he is currently, and Execution: A Killer Team delves further into the world of The Wolverine, but also harks back to the comics that gave birth to the character in the first place.

As this character and franchise lives and dies with the casting of Jackman -- and he could not have been a better choice when he was first cast -- the bonus feature Hugh Jackman: The Man Behind the Mutant is pure bliss. The profile on Jackman not only explores his methods of finding deeper realms of his character, but even how he got in superhero shape. After all, the actor is human, the character is not.

X-Men 2 Hugh Jackman

As longtime Wolverine fans, we especially enjoyed Reflections: The Evolution of Wolverine. For a character that is so rich, there is no bottom of the well that can be deep enough to cover Wolverine and his alter ego Logan.

Then there is the commentary by director Mangold that is only available on the unleashed extended version. As this is truly his film from conception to closing credits, there can be no better authority to take viewers on the journey that spans the North American northwest to the land of the Rising Sun. This is a man who not only keenly knows how to tell a story, but also possesses the knowledge of the mythology of the character that the film is named after.

For those who have tablets or a secondary tech device, the second screen app is an even further means to get more out of this product. One can witness the movie without interruption and capture the magic of the moviemaking simultaneously. It is a glorious marriage of technology and story that previous DVD and Blu-Ray titles have flirted with, but few have achieved with the brilliance that is featured in The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition.

Finally, as Wolverine does exist in a world much larger than is portrayed in this film, the bonus feature that takes fans on a set tour of X-Men: Days of Future Past is an uncanny way to get a feel for the world that Bryan Singer is creating for his next chapter of the X-Men world. As those who have seen the film (check out our The Wolverine review for more), the after credits scene is a jaw-dropper and a terrific way for Mangold to hand the X-Men baton to Singer as his film readies for release in 2014.

Ben Whishaw Set to Play Freddie Mercury

$

We at Movie Fanatic were a little disappointed when Sacha Baron Cohen quit the Freddie Mercury biopic. Sure, he seemed like an unconventional choice, but if anyone could do it, we felt Cohen could have. But, alas, we move on and just want the movie to come to life. Producers have announced today that Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) has been tapped to play the iconic singer of Queen and that Dexter Fletcher has been hired to direct. So, this is good news… the project is moving forward.

Q Skyfall

Whishaw is probably best known of late for his first-time turn as Q in the most recent Bond movie. The actor made quite the splash as a 21st century Q, attuned with the inner workings of computers and gadgets.

He is a talented actor, so Whishaw should take to the role of Mercury quite nicely. The story will follow Mercury from the formation of Queen in the early 1970s and seeks to end the story with their legendary set at Live Aid in 1985. Mercury would die of AIDS several years later.

Fast and Furious 6 DVD Review: Remembering Paul Walker

$

It is an interesting endeavor reviewing the Fast and Furious 6 DVD and Blu-Ray. Watching what would be one of the final works in the career of one of its stars is a challenging effort. When Paul Walker died, legions of Fast and Furious fans -- as well as those who appreciated his other work -- were devastated. To watch him in a movie where he is racing cars at high rates of speed, which mirror how he died, requires one to remember how Walker adored his life, and one of the ways he began his journey to adulthood was through racing cars.

Fast and Furious 6 DVD

So, the release of Fast and Furious 6 on DVD and Blu-Ray is in fact a fantastic way to remember the fallen star. It is one of the series’ best films and a memorable way for the star to go out on top (and be sure to check out one of the last Paul Walker interviews for his next film, Hours, which is an astounding piece of work by the late actor).

After the success of Fast Five, pressure was on to top what some felt was a shot in the arm of the successful franchise. As seen in the Fast and Furious 6 trailer, the story for the latest installment took the gang to London where the promise of their freedom was hanging in the balance. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) needed the help of the racing crew (led by Vin Diesel, Walker and Tyrese Gibson) in bringing down a criminal mastermind (Luke Evans, soon to be seen in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug). In return for his being brought to justice, our favorite street racers would get full pardons.

In the process, Diesel’s character would have the shock of his life… the return of Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty! You’ll have to see the movie to find out how that works, no spoilers here!

Our theatrical Fast and Furious 6 review absolutely loved the film and feels that it is indeed one of the best in the series and has produced an anticipation for Fast and Furious 7 that is only eclipsed by our eagerness for Avengers: Age of Ultron when it comes to upcoming movies. (For more on the status of that film, check out our story on how Walker’s death is impacting Fast and Furious 7.)

The franchise also added Gina Carano in a role that fits her perfectly as the right-hand woman of Agent Hobbs. Director Justin Lin has got his cast working on their highest of cylinders and managed to interweave new characters and old favorites effortlessly. Plus, those chase scenes through the streets of crowded London are ones for the ages (heck, they made our Top 10 Movie Car Chases list!).

Fast and Furious 6 Cast

When it comes to bonus features and extras on the Fast and Furious 6 DVD and Blu-Ray, they are aplenty. We have to start with the extended version of the film, which for fans and new-to-the-series viewers alike is a treat. For those of us who love the series, there is no such thing as too much. and the additional scenes pay off huge in the scope of the film.

Take Control is a terrific feature that has Diesel, Walker, Rodriguez and Lin popping in at certain moments through the film, offering their thoughts and feelings about the scene you’re watching, while providing behind-the-scenes footage at the same time. It’s a neat feature and one that should thrill fans to no end.

Lin upped the ante when it came to the chase scenes in the film, as we mentioned. The bonus feature heading Planes, Tanks and Automobiles features four separate documentaries and each is pure joy.

The London Chase puts audiences in the front seat of the cars racing through the English capitol’s streets and provides a never-before-seen atmosphere to the car chase genre that should even get some new fans added to the Fast and Furious world.

The Highway Heist: The Convoy Attack chronicles how Lin managed to create one of the most astounding action sequences ever captured as our gang of racing heroes do their best to try to get our bad guy… all while battling tanks, an armored cargo carrier and even a harpoon… all at extreme speeds!

The third bonus feature on the Planes, Tanks and Automobiles banner is The Antonov Takedown which explores the finale sequence that is simply jaw-dropping. Lin has increased the intensity of his action sequences throughout the film, and concludes his action epic with a stunner… the gang racing to take down the world’s largest plane as it races down the runway towards a getaway.

Dom and Letty Race Again explores the joyous reunion that is Diesel and Rodriguez coming back together in the franchise that made them stars.

You don’t have to be an automobile enthusiast to appreciate the Fast and Furious franchise. But, it has done its part in creating a legion of new gearheads, and the bonus feature Gearhead’s Delight will do nothing but add more to those who appreciate all things auto. It goes from the shop to the test track and then to the set to show how these cars were chosen, souped up and made ready to take their spotlight on the big screen.

Jordana Brewster Paul Walker Fast and Furious 6

Fast and Furious 6 is not all car racing action. The Hand-to-Hand Fury featurette takes a look at the fight choreography that went into several interweaving fight scenes that are a highlight of the film.

The deleted scenes are interesting, especially given how much was put in the film and how Lin had to choose what to leave out. Also as this film is firmly the work of Lin and his team, his commentary track is a must-listen at some point during your viewing of this home video release.

And we would be remiss not to mention the priceless featurette The Fastest of Them All, which chronicles the film series from the first film through this sixth film. It also leaves us primed and ready to hit the gas as the series contemplates how to go into the future.

Lastly, there is a bonus that is kind of “hidden” and should not be missed. Given the tragedy of Walker’s passing, it has an added sense of the solemn. There is the first scene of Fast and Furious 7, which feels like a true extension of this film given how the post-credit scene wraps up Fast and Furious 6.

Also, given that a portion of the Fast and Furious 6 DVD and Blu-Ray profits will go to Paul Walker's charity, Reach Out WorldWide, there could be no better way to remember a film legend gone too soon.

Godzilla Trailer: Monster Movie Mayhem Begins!

The folks at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have done an impeccable job of introducing the world of Godzilla to a new audience with their first Godzilla trailer. Merely hours after we featured our first Godzilla photos, the trailer begins with star David Strathairn addressing the troops about to parachute drop into a war zone that he tells his charges is nothing you have ever trained for. You got that right.

Then, the camera takes the perspective of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as he falls towards the earth ready to let open his parachute and do battle… with what, he has no idea. The nervous anticipation is captured impeccably by director Gareth Edwards.

As he’s about to land, the trailer cuts away to a series of scenes that tease the destruction with “what on earth is that” gazes from its cast including Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen before the trailer gives us the reveal we’ve waited for… Godzilla himself letting out his roar.

Look for Godzilla to storm into theaters May 16, 2014.

Kellan Lutz and his The Legend of Hercules is striking first in the battle of the mythical Greek heroes, with Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules following later in 2014. The latest TV spot for The Legend of Hercules is here, hoping to capitalize on that fantastic first The Legend of Hercules trailer.

Lutz stars as Hercules in what is truly an origins story. He is the half-breed son of Zeus and to say that his “father” has trouble accepting that fact is a gross understatement. Hercules must grow up without knowing his true identity. His father sees him almost as a bastard son and makes it clear that the kingdom will be left to his older brother, someone more “fit” to be king. Have you seen Lutz? If anyone’s “fit” to be king, it’s him!

The Legend of Hercules lands January 10, 2014 and also stars Scott Adkins (The Expendables 2), Liam McIntyre and Johnathon Schaech.

Higher-ups seek to change that when they send him into battle in what is a glorified suicide mission. He dies, but strange things happen when he gets caught in a time loop that finds him alive again. He must relive the battle again and again, until he finds a way to survive.

Despicable Me 2 DVD Review: Minion Mini Movie & More!

When Despicable Me 2 arrived in theaters this past summer, Universal had to be pleasantly surprised that the film became the number one comedy of the year, banking $863 million globally. Sure, we love our Minions (a Minion movie is coming!), but that’s a lot of Minion money! The Steve Carell-starring animated film has arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray, and it is one smartly packaged home video release as it contains more Minion material than even the biggest fan can imagine. The Despicable Me 2 DVD and Blu-Ray are truly Minion mania incarnate.

Despicable Me 2 DVD

Despicable Me introduced Gru (Carell), the world’s greatest villain, and his minions and showed how he would go to the ends of the world to achieve world dominance -- even if it meant adopting three adorable little girls as a means to get into his rival villain's home. What he never counted on was that the trio of little ones would steal his heart. And they stole audiences’ hearts as well.

Despicable Me 2 was immediately green lit, and the story finds Gru being recruited by a secret government agency that wants to use his villainy expertise to capture someone who appears to be on the verge of becoming what he used to dream of being, the world’s best villain. Gru is recruited by Lucy (Kristen Wiig, in an astounding turn) and the two join forces to find the evil that lurks in Gru’s community.

As we stated in our theatrical Despicable Me 2 review, Carell and Wiig create impeccable comic (and hilariously romantic) chemistry, and it is just one facet of why this film works so well. The other part is… you guessed it, the Minions! Knowing our complete and utter adoration for all things Minion, Universal Home Entertainment has given fans a fantastic holiday gift of three new mini-movies.

The three mini-movies are introduced by their master, Gru, and are entitled Puppy, Panic in the Mailroom and Training Wheels. If these short masterpieces are an indication of what we can expect from the upcoming Minion movie, we are all in for a treat. We particularly like Panic in the Mailroom as it ties into the plot of Despicable Me 2 and the fact that our beloved Minions can turn evil… purple and evil, but evil nonetheless.

Minions of Despicable Me 2

The making of the mini-movies is also an added bonus feature as it shows off the talented artists and voice talent who are bringing the Minions to life. The bonus feature The Minions is a delightful and intimate look at the making of the little creatures as cameras go to Illumination Entertainment headquarters in Paris and Los Angeles to take audiences behind the scenes of the magic that is their entire existence.

Speaking of “evil” Minions, Evil Minions is a bonus feature that shows off how creators thought of the plot twist, as well as what it took to turn our adorable animated beings into the scenery-chewing monsters they become in Despicable Me 2.

Not to be left out, as Despicable Me 2 is still his world, A Gru-Some Transformation is a fantastic bonus feature that has a never-before-seen interview with Carell as he discusses how he took the international super-villain to super dad and then to super-spy in the latest Despicable Me film.

The featurette El Hombre Malo: The Villainy of El Macho shines the spotlight on our villain and the man who brought him to life via his killer voice talent, Benjamin Bratt.

And like any good spy movie, Despicable Me 2 has its share of gadgets. Some are hilarious and some are quite functional. The documentary Gadgets Galore takes a look at the magnet ships, lipstick tasers and jelly guns that bring a bit of Bond to the world of Gru.

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug: Benedict Cumberbatch on Entering the Dragon!

Benedict Cumberbatch sure has the vocal power to voice the titular dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And given his uncanny ability to channel evil, as we saw in Star Trek Into Darkness, there could not have been a better choice for Peter Jackson when it came to casting his dragon. And much as Andy Serkis famously did for Gollum, Cumberbatch donned a motion capture suit, in addition to doing voice work in a studio, to fully embody the evil dragon.

Smaug The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug

We caught up Cumberbatch recently at the Beverly Hills Hilton, in an area of the hotel that had fittingly been turned into the “Book of New Zealand,” and he told us about channeling his inner reptile, one who has taken over the dwarves' home creates a new fellowship together on a mission to rid him from the mountain locale with Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and Ian McKellen’s Gandalf along for fighting help.

Given our surroundings, we wondered if Cumberbatch was able to go on the New Zealand set and how that informed what we see teased in this The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trailer. “Yes, I did go to New Zealand. It was hugely, hugely helpful,” Cumberbatch said and smiled.

“We were in the mo-cap stage so it began as a physicalization, both voice and body work, the whole thing. That’s how I discovered him.”

It was a journey that in many ways dates back decades. “It was via my dad, who read me the book when I was either six or seven. When I went to school it was a bedtime treat at home. So that was my first bit of research,” Cumberbatch said. “Then, I went to the reptile house at the London Zoo and had a look there. It’s so beautifully written, the book, and it’s so well illustrated in countless editions of the book.”

Cumberbatch credits Jackson with the ultimate help in finding the keys to the character that is honestly the true heart of The Hobbit book and movie trilogy. “With Peter’s input, our rehearsals and just playing like a kid really in this incredible freeing volume -- as they call the mo-cap stage -- meant that we could kind of go anywhere with it,” Cumberbatch said.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Bilbo

There was one drawback. “Sadly, I met hardly any of the cast! And Martin, I didn’t spend any sort of live time with Martin which was sad. We know each other quite well so we kind of second guessed in a weird way our performances to some degree I guess. I’ve had scenes with people I haven’t even met yet. So that is bizarre.”

Cumberbatch does know Freeman, as the two are Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively, in the wildly popular BBC series.

“It’s a very different dynamic,” Cumberbatch said of his Sherlock time with Freeman. “One, I’m in the room with him and I’m not the flying, psychotic napalm machine. I could be dismissive of him as Dr. Watson as my Sherlock, but they’re friends.”

The two actors have grown quite close over the years, and even though he didn’t get to perform with him directly in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, their kinship transcended the physical absence. "He’s very smart and he’s one of the funniest men I’ve ever met,” Cumberbatch said. “He’s a craftsman. He works incredibly hard and creates authentic characters and moments in drama. He’s an inspiration to work with obviously and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about Martin.”

Would they ever do something else together?

“We do love our Shakespeare,” Cumberbatch said. Perhaps they could do Romeo and Juliet, but, who would play whom? “Oh, come on! You know Martin would look very pretty in a dress and wig. Martin and I will probably have another outing together at some point, but who knows?”

Cumberbatch did spend time with one The Hobbit star, and veteran of The Lord of the Rings, and that would be Serkis. He famously wore the motion capture suit as Gollum, and although Cumberbatch is playing a reptile and Serkis played a two-legged creature, the actor could not get enough from the master.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Benedict Cumberbatch

“It’s obviously more abstract. It’s only going to be an impression of something that’s a serpentine reptile who can breathe fire and fly. One of the ways I did it was trying to squeeze my legs together, just forgetting the fact that they were legs, just trying to feel that as an elongated body crawling on the floor with my elbows and using my hands as claws and over-articulating my neck and shoulder,” Cumberbatch said.

“[I] just threw myself at it with a kind of kid-like imagination and their brilliant, expert guidance. It was a really fun way to work. Andy’s the originator and master of that form -- art form, I should say, giving it its proper title. We just sort of laughed afterwards because we both realized he’s only done biped mammals. No one’s really tried a serpent before!”
