Saving Mr. Banks: Emma Thompson Dishes Finding Mary Poppins Author

While tackling the role of Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks, when Emma Thompson dug deep into her research, she found a woman of contrasts. “This is a woman who kept on saying, ‘I don’t want anything. I don’t want a biography. I don’t want anything like that. I don’t want anyone to do or know anything about me.’ Meanwhile, she kept everything she wrote for the archives at Brisbane University,” Thompson told Movie Fanatic.

Saving Mr. Banks Emma Thompson

Thompson thinks it comes down to a selfless view of herself, yet she keenly knew the place she held in literary history. “She was an important contributor to the culture and wanted to have it preserved.”

When asked what Thompson thinks Travers would have thought of this movie about her, she doesn’t hesitate with her answer. “What she would say about this is, ‘Absolutely ridiculous film! I have no relationship whatsoever to what was happening. But, you know, it’s about me and I thought that the clothes were really rather nice,’” Thompson said and laughed.

Travers was not eager to have Walt Disney make her beloved Mary Poppins into a film. She sure as heck did not want it to be a musical, and Travers was adamant that it not have any animation. Thompson’s characterization shows her as a woman who has a financial need, and after 20 years of saying no to Disney, felt compelled to say yes. So, as teased in the Saving Mr. Banks trailer, she takes a trip to Los Angeles to see what the entertainment icon has to say about her story.

Tom Hanks Emma Thompson Saving Mr. Banks

We wondered why she thinks P.L. Travers, who can be so hurtful and so mean, is so much fun, and so kind of irresistibly adorable. “Americans, particularly, like to see someone being rude. It’s bliss, isn’t it?” Thompson said as to why it is such a joy to watch her as Travers. Many agree as the actress just scored one of the Golden Globe nominations for her portrayal.

Thompson feels that many in her field often play people who are emotionally or at least morally consistent in some way. “She wasn’t consistent in any way. You would not know what you would get from one moment to the next.”

In Saving Mr. Banks, Travers has a problem with the songs and some of their made-up words (such as Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!), all while saying that Disney and his team simply didn’t get where Mary Poppins was coming from. Throughout the film, as told in flashbacks, we see Travers as she is growing up in Australia. The title of Saving Mr. Banks holds the key to how Disney got Travers to finally give him the rights and give us the classic that Mary Poppins became.

For portraying a woman who is so gifted with words, some of the most powerful moments in the film have Thompson not using any. She gets the most out of a glance, much as she did in Love Actually. Thompson adores that type of challenge and it was one of the reasons she cherished the Saving Mr. Banks experience.

Emma Thompson Saving Mr. Banks

“Scenes without words are bliss to do. I mean, not because one is frightened of words or learning words or using words, of course not, but just because you’re not so active somehow. It’s not even that you’re passive, but you’re just responding,” Thompson said.

There is a scene in particular where Thompson as Travers has a highly emotional reaction to what Disney and his team have come up with. “She’s having a huge reaction, I mean, huge. It’s like an elemental reaction she’s never had before in her life,” Thompson said.  “That’s what did it.”

Frozen Easter Egg Photos: Past Disney Characters Make Appearances!

Disney has given Movie Fanatic several screenshots from its blockbuster Frozen (which topped last week’s box office) that provide what is called Easter Eggs. Each photo has a story behind it that links a scene in Frozen to something from Disney’s immediate or distant past. Our first Easter Egg photo is proof of that and it is from the coronation of Queen Elsa. Look who was invited!

Frozen Easter Egg: Flynn and Rapunzel

Welcome to Arendelle: Elsa’s coronation draws guests from far-away lands -- and movies. From Tangled, Eugene Fitzherbert, aka Flynn Rider, and Rapunzel even made the guest list.

Next up, one of Disney’s most recent hits, Wreck-It Ralph, gets a cameo of sorts in the form of a confection! After all, Anna does love sweets!

Frozen Chocolate Truffles Hidden Clue

Sweet Repeat: Anna’s affinity for chocolate summons sweet treats all the way from the land of Sugar Rush in Wreck-It Ralph.

It’s teased in the Frozen trailer, the scene where Anna goes into the shop looking for supplies to help her go find her sister Elsa. Did you notice something special on the shelf? I would have bought that, freezing cold outside or not!

Frozen Oaken Shop Mickey Mouse

It’s a Mouse: Disney’s famous icon makes the quickest of cameos in Frozen. A small Mickey Mouse plush sits on one of the lower shelves in Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna.

Lastly, another reference to Tangled!

  • Frozen Swing Painting Photo

  • Frozen Swing Painting Anna

Repurposed Painting: Artist Lisa Keene’s painting -- completed during the development phase of Tangled and based on The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard -- made such an impression on Frozen filmmakers, it became part of Anna’s signature song, For the First Time in Forever, when she leaps into the air and mimics the painting’s pose.

The Naked Gun: Reboot Coming with Ed Helms

Leslie Nielsen will always be remembered for a lifetime of work, but is probably most known for his role as Detective Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun series. Now, Ed Helms (We’re the Millers) will have a lot to live up to as it was announced that The Naked Gun will be getting the reboot treatment and a new incarnation will be coming at audiences soon.

The Hangover Part III Ed Helms

Although, given who will be creating the new franchise, we are intrigued and encouraged. Reno 911 creators Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant have been hired to write the screenplay, and if you have seen their TV show that launched their careers, you know that they have the potential to hit this out of the park. Lennon and Garant also wrote the screenplay for the Night at the Museum movies.

More on this reboot as news arises.

Spider-Man Spin-Offs Coming Soon: Sinister Six & Venom

We knew that Sony would expand the Spider-Man universe, but we are surprised it was announced so quickly! Today, the famed studio announced that it had green lit not one, but two Spider-Man spin-offs involving Sinister Six and Venom. Movie Fanatic had thought that there would be an underlying plot in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 concerning Sinister Six, particularly with Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn character.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinker, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard have been tapped to develop the stories and screenplays under the supervision of longtime Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. The latter fact makes us feel that this could not be in better hands. And you know Marvel Entertainment is all over this as well and won’t let their characters simply be an excuse to print dollars for the studio.

And the fact that those writers are responsible for creating films as far-ranging as Transformers, Star Trek, Men in Black, Cloverfield and The Cabin in the Woods… we are seriously encouraged.

The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb is also said to be heavily involved, although he will not direct the Sinister Six and Venom projects. Kurtzman, Orci and Solomon are on board to pen the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will helm. Goddard has been given the honor of writing and directing The Sinister Six, which centers on the iconic villains in the Spider-Man world.

Saving Mr. Banks Review: A Spoonful of Excellence

$

We all know the classic that Mary Poppins became, but few knew the Herculean effort it took for Walt Disney to get the film made, as chronicled in Saving Mr. Banks. Disney had made a promise to his daughters that he would turn their favorite book into a film when they were young. Little did the man who was used to getting what he wanted know that it would take decades to fulfill a promise he made to two little girls.

Saving Mr. Banks Stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney

Tom Hanks is Disney and Emma Thompson is the prickly Mary Pippins author P.L. Travers in director John Lee Hooker's even-paced, heartfelt film that celebrates that uniquely American creative institution that is Disney.

Our story alternates between Travers' youth as a young girl growing up in rural Australia and the early 1960s where the middle-aged author is globally known and hugely successful thanks to her Mary Poppins books. But, she also is in financial trouble and the influx of income from selling Disney the film rights would not only help, but it is a necessity.

The film crosses back and forth between the two time periods, almost to the final credits. See, Travers' past is integral to the birth of the Mary Poppins story and it has everything to do with her father. Colin Farrell is her dad, and one of the most magical aspects of a movie filled with magic is Farrell’s performance. It is tragic what happens to him, and the actor handles it with grace and power that fuels the issues that Travers has with Disney which are the crux of the film. Her story with her father is honestly, what gives us the movie’s title.

Thompson, earning a Golden Globe nomination for the role, is astonishing. She simultaneously manages to be rude, unlikable, put-off-ish and utterly fascinating and compelling. It could not have been an easy journey for the actress, capturing the elements of a person so torn between integrity, necessity and coming to grips with one’s past.

Saving Mr. Banks Tom Hanks Emma Thompson

There is a fish-out-of-water aspect to Saving Mr. Banks as well, thanks to Thompson’s characterization. She’s supremely British (obviously by way of Australia), and when she lands in Los Angeles and gets the full Disney Hollywood treatment, you can tell it does not impress her, but she tolerates it. Maybe tolerate is too strong a word!

And there is Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. There could be no one in Hollywood today who could have captured an icon, except one who already is an icon himself. The nuances -- from the way he touches his mustache and the posture Hanks gives his character to the wonderment that Disney possessed that was infectious -- are uncanny. And Hanks and Thompson perform an acting dance that is simply gorgeous and breathtaking to watch.

Saving Mr. Banks Jason Schwartzman Tom Hanks

Our Saving Mr. Banks review feels that one does not have to be a fan of Mary Poppins to appreciate the splendor of this film. The script is expertly weaved together. John Lee Hancock’s direction is with a touch that would make Disney himself proud. For those who do love the movie at the heart of this film, witnessing how the music came together through the Sherman brothers (expertly cast Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak) and the way that Travers ultimately fell under the spell that is Disney’s Magic Kingdom of film majesty, is pure bliss.

Hot on the heels of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer and Sony’s announcement of Sinister Six and Venom movies earlier today, we’ve got our hands on the international trailer that shows off even more footage than previously seen. Most notable is the voice-over heard from Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn when he says, “We have plans for you, Peter Parker.” Oh… chilly!

Andrew Garfield returns as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, and there’s even a bit in the international trailer above that we haven’t seen before with his aunt (Sally Field) coming into his room and asking why his face is all dirty. His answer… and her reply, is priceless.

Then, stay until the end when -- dressed as Spider-Man -- he leaves Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy behind and she is none too happy and lets out his real name!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 lands in theaters May 2, 2014 with the hero ready to battle Electro, Rhino and... Green Goblin

The reason we know the title is here to stay is that the Sin City sequel has released a teaser poster to get fans pumped up for the film’s arrival August 22, 2014.

Weekend Movie Preview: December 13, 2013

The weekend movie preview for this mid-December weekend finally brings the arrival of one of the most anticipated movies of the year, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The J.R.R. Tolkien-penned classic isn't the only film to land on screens this week with Tom Hanks channeling Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks and Paul Walker turning in a powerhouse performance in one of his final films, the Hurricane Katrina drama Hours. Also, Tyler Perry is back as Madea in A Madea Christmas... sure to ring the jingle bells of his fans.

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug: Peter Jackson's second chapter in his The Hobbit trilogy finds Bilbo (Martin Freeman), his band of dwarves and Gandalf inching ever closer to the evil dragon Smaug. The film truly cooks with action sequences that are among the best of the year and it is leagues better than the first film in the series, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. As we stated in our The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug review, the addition of a new character in Evangeline Lilly's Tauriel actually adds a whole lot of punch and heart to a series that already had it in droves.

Saving Mr. Banks: Hanks is Walt Disney in the film that chronicles the incredible effort it took for the entertainment titan to secure the rights and film P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins. Emma Thompson astounds in the role of Travers, and the behind-the-scenes drama of making a classic is compelling on every level. Our Saving Mr. Banks review found it a "spoonful of excellence" and it is a priceless look into the creative genius of two very different souls.

Hours: The story of a father's epic effort to keep his prematurely born baby alive after her mother dies in delivery in the midst of the horror of Hurricane Katrina is truly powerful. Paul Walker, in one of his final roles, astounds in his ability to channel the entire spectrum of emotions. The people of the city of New Orleans should also be quite proud of this picture as it tributes the tenacity of a community that is reflected in Walker's father who never gives up. For more, check out our Hours review.

A Madea Christmas: Perry is back as Madea in her first holiday venture, and for fans of the character and Perry's performance as the woman, it should bring some Christmas joy. For those who aren't too familiar with Madea, this Christmas story may not be your cup of eggnog. As reported in our A Madea Christmas review, Perry knows this character so well, and his improv riffs with co-stars Larry the Cable Guy and Kathy Najimy are absolutely hilarious.

Walt Disney Set to Distribute Indiana Jones Movies: Fifth “Needs a Story”

We knew all too well when Walt Disney purchased Lucasfilm that we would get Star Wars: Episode VII, but what about that other Lucasfilm franchise, Indiana Jones? Disney and Paramount (who was responsible for distributing the property) have reached an agreement to have the Mouse House distribute all future Indiana Jones movies.

Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones

A fifth Indiana Jones movie has intrigued Harrison Ford and it appears it will happen. But, while speaking at the Variety dealmakers breakfast, Disney chairman Alan Horn said that “we need a story.” He also went on to say that a new Indiana Jones movie should be at least two to three years away.

Under the deal, Disney will handle marketing and distribution rights to all future Indiana Jones installments, while Paramount will still control the first four films -- Raiders of the Lost Ark through Kingdom of the Crystal Skull -- and receive financial participation compensation for all future Indy movies.

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug: Evangeline Lilly on Living Elven Dream

Evangeline Lilly was supposed to be retired. After the success of Lost, Lilly sought to engage in a quieter life of raising her young child while focusing on her writing career. But, as a longtime J.R.R. Tolkien fan, there was no saying “no” when Peter Jackson called and asked her to appear in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. “What's so strange about retiring at 30?” Lilly asked Movie Fanatic and laughed. "I had retired into what I thought would be a life of quiet motherhood and writing, and didn't really plan on taking any more acting gigs."

The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug Stars Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel

The Hobbit was her favorite book as a little girl and Silvan Elves were her favorite characters. It was an elf that Jackson sought Lilly out to play... how could she even consider not heading to New Zealand and embarking on her own Middle Earth quest?

“It would be a dream come true. I jumped at the opportunity,” Lilly said. Then, she got a surprise. “Then they said, ‘Your character's not in the book.’ And I took great pause, as a great fan of Tolkien. I kind of gulped and went, ‘What? Everyone's going to hate me!’”

But it didn't take long for Jackson to convince her that it was the right thing to do and even more so, it was a good idea to have Lilly play Tauriel. “In his defense, Tolkien was writing in 1937. The world is a different place today, and I keep repeatedly telling people that in this day and age, to put nine hours of cinema entertainment in theaters for young girls to go and watch, and not have one female character for them to watch is subliminally telling them, ‘you don’t count,’” Lilly admitted.

“You’re not important, and you’re not pivotal to story. And I just think they were very brave and very bright in saying, we won’t do that to the young female audience who come and watch our film. And not just the young female audience, but even a woman of my own age, I think it’s time we stop making stories that are only about men – especially only about heroic men. And I love that they made Tauriel a hero.”

When it came to get ready to play a bow-and-arrow-wielding warrior seen in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trailer, Lilly trained hard, but already had a solid foundation. “Believe it or not, I used to teach archery to little kids at a camp when I was a teenager,” Lilly said.

But, there is much more to getting physically ready than firing arrows at Orcs. “I went through five different types of training. I did weapons training, stunt training, movement training, dialect training, language training. And in the weapons training, there were two different weapons. I had double daggers and a bow and arrow!”

The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug Evangeline Lilly

Given her lifelong affinity for all things Tolkien and Elven, we wondered what her reaction was when she first saw herself on screen in the Middle Earth world. “It was a double-edged sword because I’m a real Tolkien geek, and I had dreamed about being an elf since I was a little girl. So there was an incredible amount of satisfaction and dream realization when I first got to see myself as an elf,” Lilly said.

“But I’m also, unfortunately, an actor, which means that I’m very self-critical. It’s very hard for me to ever give anything I do a stamp of approval without having the appendices that says all the things I did wrong and what didn’t work. Just the ears, the wig and the actual visual was very, very exciting.”

G.I. Joe 3: Could Channing Tatum Return?

With G.I. Joe: Retaliation an enormous success, it’s hardly a surprise that director Jon Chu is busy readying a third. He’s got Snow White and the Huntsman and Divergent writer Evan Daugherty penning the script and promises that the third film in the series will be “taking it in a whole new direction.”

G.I. Joe Retaliation Channing Tatum

Chu was talking to MTV News and also admitted that the film will be filled with “lots of fun surprises.” Could that possibly mean that Channing Tatum could be back to the franchise he started? [SPOILER] After all, he did die, or supposedly died in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

"You never know. Storm Shadow died in the first one and came back in the second one, and then other characters have died and never come back,” Chu said of Tatum’s potential return. “The G.I. Joe world, the best thing about it is you never know who's coming back and who's not."

The third film also could be centered on a story that came before G.I. Joe: Retaliation or G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra… or even somewhere in between.

Saving Mr. Banks: Colin Farrell on What Making-of Movie He Wants to See

Colin Farrell has a tricky, but ultimately rewarding job in Saving Mr. Banks. As seen in the Saving Mr. Banks trailer, he plays the father of P.L. Travers (author of Mary Poppins) and ultimately proves to be the inspiration for the Tom Hanks-starring Disney film and the heart of the Mary Poppins story itself.

“P.L. Travers, as fictionalists and artists sometimes can do, through the convention of drama was trying to right the wrongs of her childhood and her past,” Farrell said.

We met Farrell for an exclusive video interview from the famed Walt Disney studio lot in Burbank and the actor admitted that he didn’t necessarily recall his first Mary Poppins memory, but has seen the movie again readying for the role.

“It was extraordinary. It’s an amazing, amazing film,” Farrell said.

As Saving Mr. Banks chronicles what it took to bring Mary Poppins to the big screen, we asked Farrell what classic movie he’d like to see a film about the making of. His answer… might surprise!

Check out our Saving Mr. Banks review, with the film expanding nationwide December 20.

Prisoners DVD Review: One of Year’s Best Thrillers Comes Home

Prisoners stars Hugh Jackman living every parent’s worst nightmare. His daughter has disappeared. He doesn’t trust the detective manning the case (Jake Gyllenhaal), so what’s a dad to do? Take matters into your own hands and launch an all-out effort to find her alive. What we found so fantastic about this thriller (check out our theatrical Prisoners review) is that it keeps you guessing with twists and turns that come out of nowhere to shock and awe the audience.

Prisoners is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray, and although it may be difficult to watch for parents, it is without a doubt one of the best movies of the year.

Prisoners DVD

Jackman is married to Maria Bello and she is not taking it so well either. In fact, she has become completely unresponsive in a drug-induced depressed state. Their friends’ (Terrence Howard and Viola Davis) daughter was with their daughter, and they are just as desperate, yet they have confidence in the cops and their ability to find their children alive.

The supporting cast is astounding, especially Paul Dano and Oscar winner Melissa Leo. Since we do not want to tell you too much about this thriller, we won’t even tell you who they play!

There are twists throughout, and part of the reason Prisoners is such a heart-pounder is because one cannot watch the film without wondering how far you would go if in the same position as Jackman’s character. Director Dennis Villeneuve does a masterful job of keeping the audience guessing, while simultaneously packing his film with emotion that is incredibly powerful and permeating.

When it comes to bonus features on the Prisoners Blu-Ray and DVD, there are only two. Yet, they do the job of taking you behind the scenes while still reflecting the film's true power.

Prisoners Stars Hugh Jackman

Prisoners: Every Moment Matters sets the stage for the film and how, as explained in the movie’s narrative, time is of the essence when it comes to finding a kidnap victim -- especially one so young. After watching the full movie, this particular bonus feature is one of the rare ones that enhances the viewing experience more than a simple informative look at how the movie was made.

Both Gyllenhaal and Jackman give the performances of their careers in Prisoners. As such, the only other bonus feature on the film should and does pay tribute to that fact. Bello, Davis and the other performers also bring their A+ game, surely knowing the pristine excellence their two leads were turning in. Prisoners: Powerful Performances explores the hard to quantify art of the performance. Hearing and watching Gyllenhaal, Jackman, Davis, Leo, Howard and Dano discuss their craft, with the explosive Prisoners as the background, is simply priceless.
