The Butler DVD Review: Lee Daniels' Triumph Chronicles Change

$

0

The Butler became a blockbuster, crossing the coveted $100 million mark with its summer release. And for those who missed it in theaters, or want to see it again or even better, own the Lee Daniels masterpiece, The Butler is coming home on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Butler Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Pack

Previewed in The Butler trailer, Forest Whitaker stars as the titular character that is based on a real man who served seven presidents and had a front row seat from the White House of a seismic societal change. It was a historic period that saw our country go from deep and often violent racial divide to a man of color inhabiting The White House where The Butler worked.

When we published our theatrical The Butler review, Movie Fanatic marveled at the ability of Whitaker to portray a man over many decades. His performance is matched by Oprah Winfrey as his wife, who is likely going to earn an Academy Award nomination for Supporting Actress -- as we said in our Oscar predictions. The two of them put on an acting clinic, and Whitaker commands the film throughout. His story, as told by Daniels, is the story of a burgeoning freedom for African Americans and the struggle it took to achieve it.

The Butler DVD and Blu-Ray is filled with bonus features that only enhance the power emitted by the film itself. We were enthralled with the featurette Lee Daniels’ The Butler: An American Story. The doc re-enforces the point that this film is based on the story of the man who broke barriers in America’s house, but has a larger scope and responsibility to reflect the changing landscape in racial relations in the country as a whole. Therefore the liberties it takes with the facts are sacrificed in the larger vision of painting a richer picture of race in America.

In that vein, The Original Freedom Riders bonus feature is a must-see for those who are both keenly familiar with their story and for those who first learn of them in The Butler. Their role in the struggle for equality in America is as important as any who fought for freedom. To see them get the spotlight in this The Butler DVD and Blu-Ray bonus feature is a true gift. Hearing from the real Freedom Riders only enhances the film itself and honestly makes you want to learn more.

The deleted scenes are many -- there are nine. We can see how they were cut for time, but viewing them after seeing the movie is another must. Unfortunately, we still don’t get the scene that was cut from the movie that was talked about in our Terrence Howard exclusive interview. Still no proof of that hook-up scene between Howard and Winfrey!

Oprah Winfrey Forest Whitaker The Butler

But still, the nine deleted scenes are short and important, but not necessary in the dramatic pull of the entire film. Standouts include Cecil Leaves with Abe and the history buff in us enjoyed The Cuban Missile Crisis, especially given how stellar James Marsden was as John F. Kennedy.

The music video featuring star Lenny Kravitz with Gladys Knight, You and I Ain’t Nothin No More, is a nice addition, as is the gag reel. In a film that is so serious, it’s nice to see the cast and crew cracking up!

The only bonus feature we would have thought would have been included was a feature on all the superstars that played presidents. From Robin Williams as Eisenhower to Alan Rickman as Reagan, further insight into their playing small roles in a big film would have been fascinating.

Ride Along: Ice Cube Says Kevin Hart is Next Eddie Murphy

Ice Cube has come a long way from rapping F*** the Police with N.W.A. to playing a detective in Ride Along. It’s not his first officer of the law he's played -- he recently played a cop in 21 Jump Street and will return to the role in 22 Jump Street. Movie Fanatic caught up with Cube to talk about Ride Along and his most unlikely of career trajectory path that has led him to full blown Hollywood success. “It’s been an amazing ride,” Cube said.

Ice Cube Kevin Hart Star In Ride Along

“I always tell people that if you gave me a pen and a piece of paper when I was a teenager and said, ‘Write out your career and how you want it to go.’ I would have short changed myself compared to what it’s been. I’m extremely excited about what I’ve accomplished.”

Cube also insists he is just getting started. “I’m young and I have a lot more to offer and a lot more to do,” he added. “I’m actually restrained a little bit by the process of Hollywood as far as the creative ideas I have. It is impossible to do them all. That’s a little humbling, but I always feel that I fight through it and make sure that I’m always creative.”

In Ride Along, Cube plays James, the older brother to the woman that Kevin Hart’s character is dating. Hart wants to marry her, but first he has to prove he’s worthy. The high school security guard has just been admitted to the Police Academy, so what better way than to patrol the Atlanta streets with Cube on a Ride Along. As even teased in the Ride Along trailer, the two leads have impeccable chemistry.

Cube welcomed the chance to star with the man he compares to a certain pitch rabbit. “He’s the Energizer bunny,” Cube said.

“Kevin’s a pro. He’s cool ‘cause he’ll make the crew laugh, but also make the camera laugh too and a lot of guys can’t do that. Some comedians I’ve had to pull to the side and say, ‘You’re making the crew crack up… but when we’re shooting, you ain’t got no energy. What the (expletive)?’ He’s not like that. He’s always on and it’s his personality. It’s not an act.”

Ride Along Ice Cube

In fact, the rapper-actor-producer-director sees something in Hart that America is discovering (both his Think Like a Man and his stand-up movie Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain was a recent smash) as he becomes more and more popular.

“I haven’t seen anyone command a sense since Eddie Murphy like Kevin. He holds you hostage until he lets you go. Everybody’s captivated by what he’s doing. It’s an amazing talent. It’s magical to see somebody go there and they’re able to really capture all audiences with it,” Cube said. “Not just the 'hood audience, but everybody else that exists in the world -- Chinese hoods, African hoods, Israeli hoods -- he gets everybody!”

The movie is littered with hilarious moments where Hart looks to Cube for validation. We wondered if the star ever felt like that. “I never had anybody that I had to prove it to. My parents was extra supportive of me getting into hip hop,” Cube said.

“My mom knew it was positive hanging out with Dre instead of hanging out with neighborhood Crips. They were supportive from day one. [Although] my brothers and sisters were still like, ‘What you doing? Who do you think you are, Fat Boys or Run D.M.C.?’ It took a couple of checks to come in and have me roll up in something for me to respect [laughs].”

In Ride Along, Hart’s character is a big gamer and believes that because he’s had success in video games fighting the bad guys that he can handle the rough and tumble real streets. Cube appreciates that nod to those players and that those who are engrossed in that world could actually surprise you in the reality.

“It’s dope in how the gaming aspect of it helps in real life, which was a cool twist,” Cube said. “Every gamer that’s playing Call of Duty or whatever think if they was in Fallujah, they would really get down. It’s cool to see somebody that is actually trying to apply it.”

Kevin Hart Ice Cube Ride Along

The star, who is also a producer on Ride Along, relished how there were some serious moments in the script in order to not have it go off like some crazy comedy. “I think in a great comedy you have to have those moments, sprinkled out… but not too many,” he said. “Those moments help you to ground the comedy, if not it’s wacky. You don’t want to be Naked Gun. You want to be grounded in reality.”

There’s a fantastic scene, early in the film that is shown in the full length Ride Along movie trailer, where Hart pushes his girlfriend in front of him when Cube surprises him. Was there ever a moment where the superstar felt like running from conflict? The answer is yes, and he takes us back to his first days with N.W.A. “When we first doing our thing, me and Dre and went and picked up this girl that was singing for us. As I got out of the front seat to the back seat, we saw some youngsters who looked like they were going to school,” Cube said.

“We didn’t pay no attention and then when they got a few houses down, they started shooting at us. I’m yelling at Dre, ‘Drive, drive, drive!’ And he’s looking out the back and I’m like, ‘What the (expletive) you looking at?!’ He’s looking in the rear view mirror to make sure they were shooting at us. I’m like, ‘Drive!’”

That first Edge of Tomorrow trailer has us thinking this unique sci-fi thriller has some serious potential. Warner Bros. has released a still featuring stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and it appears they are getting geared up to do battle.

Edge of Tomorrow Emily Blunt Tom Cruise

Cruise stars as a futuristic soldier who is sent on what is clearly is a suicide mission in a battle against invading aliens. The effort does prove deadly, and the only thing is Cruise awakes from his “death” and is forced to re-live the day he died. Guess he has to go through the battle time and time again, and find some way to win… and then he can live.

Blunt plays a military expert who holds the key to him being able to successfully finish the mission. Edge of Tomorrow also stars Bill Paxton, Jeremy Piven and Laura Pulver. Look for it on June 6.

Elizabeth Banks (Catching Fire) looks a little worried in the first poster for her upcoming comedy Walk of Shame. See, Banks plays an local TV news reporter who has a night to remember with James Marsden. Great, right?

Well, she ends up taking the titular walk home after being stranded in downtown Los Angeles. She has no phone. She has no ID. She has no money. Oh, and she has eight hours until the biggest interview of her life that could land her on the network news!

The Walk of Shame poster was released today to tease the arrival of the trailer tomorrow. Look for Walk of Shame in theaters April 25, also starring Community star Gillian Jacobs.

Avatar Sequels: Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana Officially Set to Return

James Cameron has said that he is making three Avatar sequels instead of just one. Clearly a huge part of that would be the characters played in Avatar by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. Well, Cameron and 20th Century Fox have announced today that Worthington and Saldana are all sorts of signed, sealed and delivered for all three sequels, with filming of the first set to begin later in 2014.

Jake and Neytiri

Cameron definitely needed these players to make his Avatar four-movie series work. And the creator behind the world of Avatar is beyond thrilled. “Jake Sully is a rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor,” he said in a statement. “Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength.”

As for Saldana, her success since the Avatar movie in films such as Colombiana and the Star Trek movies shows that she can pull her weight, no matter the genre. “Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality,” Cameron admitted. “I am beyond pleased they will be returning to Pandora.”

Look for the first Avatar sequel in December 2016, with the following two each landing exactly a year later.

Carrie DVD Review: Stephen King Classic Gets Modern Update

$

0

Carrie is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray and features Chloe Moretz stepping into the title role made famous by Sissy Spacek in the 1970s. The Stephen King story is as relevant as ever with bullying dominating the nation’s news headlines and it being an integral part of the Carrie story. Heck, it is exactly why Carrie goes on that rampage in that iconic Carrie prom scene.

Carrie Blu-Ray

Many wondered why we needed a new Carrie, from director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry), when the first is so etched in our collective pop culture minds. When a story is as solid as King’s is about a teenage girl who lives under the roof of her zealously religious mother, all while trying to “fit in” in her public high school, why not revisit it more than once? Heck, plays are redone all the time and no one says a word.

The Carrie trailer teases just how fantastic not only Moretz is in the titular role, but Julianne Moore as her mother. In fact, the biggest reason to watch Carrie, circa 2013, is the performances of the two leads. Moretz plays her Carrie as fragile as an eggshell, which is all the more reason it is so powerful when she finds her voice through her discovery of her powers of telekinesis. Moretz has always been a talent, from Kick-Ass on, and she truly gets to shine in Carrie.

Moore, on the other hand, is one of the great actresses working today. And she brings a different level of manic-ness to the role of Carrie’s mother than the actress who did it in the original, Piper Laurie. There are choices that both Moore and director Peirce make that are simply stunning.

As we stated in our Carrie review, the film doesn’t pack the punch we wished it did… given its newfound resonance. But, for horror fans and King fans, this is one DVD and Blu-Ray worth having in the collection.

When it comes to bonus features, there is over an hour of extras, sure to thrill. The first thing we dove into was the never-before-seen alternative ending that was deemed too shocking for theaters. It’s a joy to see how Peirce would have ended the film if she could have done it as she wanted to. To say it is a jaw-dropping moment is a gross understatement!

Julianne Moore Chloe Moretz Carrie

Given the questions surrounding the need for a Carrie re-do, the bonus feature Bringing Back Carrie is a treasure. Through the stars and director, we learn exactly why and how they brought a new Carrie to life. And having Peirce provide commentary for the deleted and extended scenes is a rare treat as she takes the viewer through the decision process on a home video as to why certain scenes were cut or shortened.

And in that vein, the commentary track by Peirce that can be added during the film itself shows why the helmer was the perfect choice to re-envision the King classic. Sure, she has an admiration for the Brian De Palma 1970s film, but her love is from the pages of King’s book and that shows through every frame.

Also included in the Carrie DVD and Blu-Ray is the viral Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise video that must be seen to be believed. And then… like Carrie, seen again.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman Trailer: We Must Rewrite History

The first full Mr. Peabody and Sherman trailer has landed and it does a pretty fine job of simultaneously introducing the characters to a new generation and giving fans of the classic cartoon a new adventure to look forward to.

Mr. Peabody is the world’s smartest dog, in fact, he may be the most intelligent being on the planet. And at the end of the day, he’s just trying to be a good father to his adopted son, Sherman. Max Charles voices the little guy and Modern Family star Ty Burrell is Mr. Peabody.

In Mr. Peabody and Sherman, a little scuffle at school winds up having the most extraordinary of effects on the time-space continuum. See, Mr. Peabody has invented a time machine, called the WABAC, and while having a classmate of Sherman’s and her parents over for dinner, the two kids take a trip back in time and truly mess things up. What’s a dog, er, world’s greatest scientist to do? Grab the kids and make it right!

Mr. Peabody and Sherman hits theaters March 7.

Avengers Age of Ultron: Scarlett Johansson Loves Its “Sense of Humor”

$
0

As seen in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff has leapt from The Avengers to the world of Chris Evans’ superhero alter ego. But in an interview with Parade magazine to promote her movie Her, Johansson gave the world some insight into what to expect from the next chapter in the Avengers saga, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Black Widow in The Avengers

“I think the script is dark and it’s dry. It has got this amazing one-liner, glass-cutting sense of humor,” Johansson said.

“Obviously, the script is very cerebral. It doesn’t lose that exciting comic book aspect that people enjoyed in the first film, but it’s smart and it feels like the next installment. It doesn’t feel like a rehashing. It feels like these characters are moving forward. Plotlines are moving forward.”

In case you haven’t noticed, the Marvel world scores talented actors (Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr.) and that is largely because these aren’t just pulp stories with all explosions and action, and that too is why Johansson took on the part of Black Widow. She sees that continuing in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“It’s deep and I think that’s why people really respond to the Marvel Universe, because the films are fun and exciting and have all that flashy stuff, but there’s a gravity to them,” she added. “People can expect that gravity this time around.”

Devil’s Due Viral Video: Shocking New York City to Promote Found Footage Flick

The Devil Baby has attacked New York and in the process, successfully promoted the 20th Century found footage horror flick Devil’s Due in the process. In a viral video that reminds us of that Carrie clip of New Yorkers being scared by a coffee shop girl who uses telekinesis to get retribution, a devil baby scoots around the city scaring passers-by.

We caught some early footage of Devil’s Due and were quite impressed. And if the entire movie is half as creative as this viral video, audiences are in for a treat. Devil’s Due hits theaters January 17, and stay with Movie Fanatic as we run our exclusive interview with the filmmaking collective behind the film known as Radio Silence tomorrow. In the meantime, check out the Devil’s Due trailer

Reasonable Doubt Exclusive Clip: Dominic Cooper Chases Samuel L. Jackson

Reasonable Doubt features Dominic Cooper (soon to be seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier) entangled in a morally complicated web with Samuel L. Jackson. We’ve got an exclusive clip from the thriller that arrives in theaters and On Demand January 17 featuring Cooper chasing a friend of his who is about to become the next victim of Jackson’s serial killer.

Well, first let’s back up. As teased in the Reasonable Doubt trailer, Cooper is a District Attorney who when he hits a pedestrian -- instead of stopping and helping him -- runs away. Later, he learns that the man died. The cops charge Jackson’s character with murder and Cooper is the man who has to prosecute him. Well, knowing the truth, Cooper does whatever he can to throw the case… and he does.

Then… he learns that Jackson is a serial killer that the police have been trying to find for eons and that hit and run victim was in fact someone running away from Jackson. Now, Jackson has Cooper over the barrel as they say. But, determined to bring justice in some manner, the District Attorney takes matters into his own hands and tries to find a way to get Jackson. By the looks of the below exclusive clip, that is not going very well.

Check out our exclusive interview with Cooper tomorrow on Movie Fanatic, and be sure to check out Reasonable Doubt on January 17!

Avengers Age of Ultron: Thomas Kretschmann Cast as Baron Strucker

The rumor that James Spader as Ultron would not be the only villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron is true. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Dracula star Thomas Kretschmann has scored the role of a “major villain” in the upcoming sequel to The Avengers. And that baddie happens to be a fan favorite, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker!

Thomas Kretschmann Photo

Strucker is a former officer in the Nazi army who has the unfortunate, or fortunate to him, part to play of being the host of the Death Spore Virus. It gives him healing powers and has stopped him from aging -- although, if he is killed, the virus will go airborne and wipe out the entire world. That’s a pretty formidable foe, huh?

Avengers: Age of Ultron starts filming in the next few months, for an expected release date of May 1, 2015.

RoboCop goes for his first field test in a new clip from the reboot that stars Joel Kinnaman in the role that Peter Weller made famous in the 1980s original. The clip also features Jackie Earle-Haley in a cast that’s pretty impressive. Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle (soon to be seen in Fifty Shades of Grey) and Abbie Cornish fill out the ensemble.

RoboCop lands in theaters February 12, and judging by the latest RoboCop trailer, fans of the original should have high expectations for the rare remake that just might live up to the first film.

Sony’s Spider-Man fan group The Amazing Spider-Fans have released a fantastic (and electric!) new photo of Jamie Foxx channeling his power as Electro from the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Electro The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Electro is the main villain that threatens the peace of New York City, and the life of Andrew Garfield’s hero. But, there are two other villains in play as well, judging by that Triptych poster including Paul Giamatti as Rhino and Dane DeHaan, who appears to be Green Goblin!

The most recent The Amazing Spider-Man 2 international trailer is probably the best, and shows off DeHaan, Giamatti and some fantastic action sequences between Garfield’s Spider-Man and Foxx’s Electro. Look for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man in theaters May 2.

Oscar Nominations Snubs & Surprises: Where Is Tom Hanks?

$
0
0

The Oscar nominations have been announced and Gravity and American Hustle are leading the pack with 10 nominations apiece. There were plenty of surprises and snubs in this early morning announcement live from Los Angeles.

Captain Phillips Stars Tom Hanks

First off… why wasn’t Tom Hanks’ name called? The man turned in two Academy Awards-worthy performances in Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks and was widely considered a lock for Best Actor for Captain Phillips and likely to be nominated for Supporting Actor for Saving Mr. Banks. And the two-time Oscar winner never heard his name called. That is frankly, the biggest shock of the day.

Also missing from the nominee list was Hanks' co-star from Saving Mr. Banks, Emma Thompson. Her portrayal of P.L. Travers, as we stated in our Saving Mr. Banks review, was nothing short of a miracle. For that matter, where was Saving Mr. Banks from this nomination morning? It was completely shut out.

Many thought Robert Redford was a lock for Best Actor for his career best performance in All Is Lost. Redford too was snubbed, but in this year with so many incredible Best Actor-worthy performances, I don’t think you can say the word “snub” too easily. Yes, Hanks was snubbed because we thought given the two performances, one would surely score him a nod. But Redford was competing in a tight field and he was simply a casualty of a great year.

A surprise and snub landed in the Best Supporting Actress category. We love that Sally Hawkins scored a nod for her incredible work in Blue Jasmine. And it is somewhat of a shock that Oprah Winfrey did not get nominated for her work in Lee Daniels’ The Butler. In fact, where was The Butler on this nomination morning? It was completely shut out, even if it seemed like the perfect Oscar-bait movie!

Oprah Winfrey Forest Whitaker The Butler

Noticeably absent from the Best Picture category, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Song categories was the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. We thought that the film was astounding and the Academy adores the Coen brothers. Sure, it got a nod for Sound Mixing and Cinematography, but that’s it? Seriously? We knew Oscar Isaac was a long shot for Best Actor, but we are frankly quite surprised the film got no other love.

There was even a snub in the Best Documentary category as Blackfish failed to be honored. We think this is particularly shocking because at the heart of this category, traditionally, are films that are meant to shake up the system and command its audience to action. The documentary that exposed Sea World’s practices of capturing and training killer whales has spurned such outrage, that the park itself was shaken to its core. The fact that Blackfish was not nominated may be the biggest shock of all this morning.

As for surprises… well, Jonah Hill in Wolf of Wall Street scoring a Best Supporting Acting nomination was no doubt warranted, but we didn’t think he would make the cut. It was an uncanny performance and Movie Fanatic could not be more thrilled for the traditionally comedic actor to earn his second Oscar nomination of his career.

One could call the fact that there are five nominees for Best Animated Feature a surprise. Experts predicted that there would be only three: Despicable Me 2, Frozen and The Croods. Yet, the addition of The Wind Rises (one of our Top 10 Animated Movies of 2013) and Ernest & Celestine shows that animation has grown exponentially in power in the last several years and the Academy has finally caught up.

Fruitvale Station Michael B. Jordan

The complete and utter absence of Fruitvale Station is a shock. Perhaps it came out too early in the year for voters to recall what a masterpiece it was. But no love for star Michael B. Jordan or Octavia Spencer for Best Supporting Actress -- we thought if nothing else it would earn a Best Picture nomination. But alas, it is not to be.

Philomena landing a Best Picture nod closes out our snub and surprises look as a joyous surprise. We knew Judi Dench would score a Best Actress nod, but giving that little film some love in the Best Picture category is a stroke of genius. It is truly one of the best films of the year -- we just thought it might shoot under Oscar's radar. We were never so thrilled to be wrong!

Earlier this week we premiered the Walk of Shame poster, and now we get a more in-depth look at the Elizabeth Banks-starring comedy as its trailer has premiered.

It features Banks (recently seen in Catching Fire) as a local news anchor with dreams of scoring a job with a network. When a network job slips through her fingers, she goes out for the night with some girlfriends to drink and dance and forget it all. She hooks up with James Marsden, awakes in the morning and hears a message that if she can make the interview in eight hours, the network job is still hers.

She leaves Marsden's house in a hurry, and in a strange part of Los Angeles, with no money, phone or ID… Banks has the ultimate nightmare of a Walk of Shame! Look for the comedy when it lands in theaters April 25.

Ride Along: Kevin Hart Dishes Living The "Dream"

Kevin Hart is on a roll. The man, who has been charming stand-up audiences for years – both live and on the silver screen (like in his Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain) – has now been taking over Hollywood. He has stolen scenes in Think Like a Man, This Is The End and Grudge Match. Now, he is set to take on a new role as leading man in the comedy Ride Along, before starring in About Last Night and Think Like a Man Too. We caught up with Hart to talk about his meteoric rise, starring opposite Ice Cube and for the person who we think is the funniest man in America, what was the most hilarious scene in the uber-funny Ride Along.

Ride Along Stars Kevin Hart Ice Cube

As teased in the Ride Along trailer, Hart is Ben, who wants to propose to the sister of Cube's character James. But, he knows that James thinks very little of him and must do something big to prove he is the man for James’ little sis. Once he’s accepted into the police academy, the opportunity presents itself as Ben agrees to go on aride alongwith James, who is a detective patrolling the rougher streets of Atlanta.

For Hart, getting to mess with Cube while he has to sit there and take it was the absolute most hilarious moment in the whole movie for him. We couldn’t agree more as the man who used to front N.W.A. can be kind of tough, and to witness him being picked apart by Hart is knee-slapping to say the least.

“My favorite has to be the warehouse where I slapped [Ice Cube]. Then I stuck him with a knife. That was so fun. Those were some long days and he just had to sit there in the chair. Cube didn’t have a lot of activity to do. It was just me running around,” Hart said. “I was really laughing out loud so much during that take.”

There’s also another moment in Ride Along that Hart wants audiences to take notice of. “There’s the scene with my shirt off in this movie. That’s going to change my career,” he said and laughed. “This is what people have wanted to see for some time. And at 29 minutes and 56 seconds is when it happens. You want to circle that. Everything about that says, ‘Action!’”

On a more serious note, Hart has the utmost respect for Cube. "Knowing Cube’s background and knowing the comedic careers that he’s launched and he’s going into producing and directing and writing, just as a man who has taken his career seriously and opened so many doors, I was excited,” Hart admitted.

“After meeting with him and talking and vibing with him and talking about the project and seeing his passion, I grew more excited. Once we got on set, we both had the same agenda, which was to knock this movie out of the damn park and make sure we both bring our A-game. It takes a true professional to let someone like myself come in and have the opportunity to be funny and riff, and Cube, he didn’t mind doing that. That’s a major thing. There are so many people who would try to battle with the funny. Cube did a great job of playing his lane and letting me do my thing and I take my hat off to him for that. It’s a different level of respect I have for guys like that.”

As the comic superstar he is, Hart keenly knows what makes a comedic film work and he had a perfect partner in that effort with Cube. They wanted Ride Along to feel like a hybrid of 48 Hours, Lethal Weapon and all the while, to truly stand on its own. “Cube was vocal in saying, ‘I want this movie to be different. I want you to be along with these guys and I want it to make sense.’ Tim Story (director) did a good job of making sure we were all on the same page. The big thing he said was grounding it,” Hart said.

“I asked every day to Tim: make sure I’m not all over the place with my levels. I want to be funny, but it has to be a believable funny. If I’m just out there screaming with my hands up -- I’ll look like a cartoon at the end of the day. I feel that he tracked both of our characters. From the hospital where Cube feels that’s a moment to confide in me and tell me some stuff that I don’t know and when I have a moment where we’re outside the strip club, where I’m like, ‘Why do you not like me? You don’t even know me,’ you see these vulnerable moments and it elevates the material.”

Hart has worked with Story on Think Like a Man, so the two had a working relationship already. That didn’t mean that Story didn’t become the subject of some Hart hilarity on the set. “Tim is greedy as hell. I’ve never seen anyone eat more throughout the day,” Hart said. “I was just smacking (expletive) out of his hands. I would wait for him to get something and get down to his last three pieces and just smack it out of his hands!”

Ride Along Kevin Hart Tika Sumpter

The comedic actor has the ultimate respect for his Ride Along helmer, and it’s easy to see why. “The good thing about Tim is he literally has such a great rapport with his actors. The most important thing for a director is being able to communicate. When you communicate comfortably, regardless of what you’re saying, it can always be processed,” Hart said.

“Even if it was him critiquing you, it came off so comfortable to where it was OK. You have to credit your director with that because if he’s high strung and you see a vein in the middle of his head every day and he’s always taking his hat off looking at the time, something ain’t right. We never had that feeling, ever."

As Hart is having a Hollywood run unlike any other right know, lastly we wondered… when does it hit you?

“I still don’t know if I made it. The minute I think about it is the minute I go crazy. I don’t like addressing it. It’s a dream to me,” Hart said. “That’s why I don’t go to sleep. I’m afraid I close my eyes, this (expletive) will be over.”
