The Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: Inside the DVD Bonus Features

As Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 hits DVD and Blu-Ray today, chock full of bonus features, Movie Fanatic traveled to Sony Pictures Animation and spoke with the film’s co-director Cody Cameron. Given that he and Kris Pern crafted so much for their feature film, having the ability to feature some of what was cut for whatever reason on a home video format is priceless.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 DVD

“With the four deleted scenes that I showed you, there was a lot of love put in to those moments and as you can see they’re finished, fully realized, in full color and taken to the point where they could be in the movie,” Cameron said. “That’s just part of the job is presenting stuff and showing it to audiences and because of length or the tone of the picture, they have to be deleted. It’s great that although it doesn’t make it into the final film, people are still going to see it. The artists are going to get their work out there as well.”

One of the deleted scenes involved Andy Samberg’s Brent and a joke that was clearly painful for Cameron to cut. “That Brent and his toes joke was one of my favorites,” he admitted. “It’s hard when you have to cut one of your favorite things, but it happens to everyone. But, you get used to it and it’s nice that people get to see it on the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 DVD.”

Cameron showed off a scene featuring Kristen Schaal’s orangutan with a human brain and her clear disdain for the Anna Faris character of Sam. Also a joy is the Chester V (Will Forte) scene where he introduces himself (that’s the one that contains the Samberg joke!).

Our theatrical Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 review reported how the entire film is a delicious piece of animated candy. For Cameron, if he had to choose a favorite scene that did make the cut, he doesn’t hesitate. “I story boarded the scene with Flint and Barry (the strawberry) and I did the voice work of Barry in that scene, so it’s fun for me to see people react to that.”

Barry has been a fantastic foodimal (meet the foodimals!) that was introduced in the film, having been the man behind the voice -- we wondered what Cameron makes of the wildly popular character that has become a favorite plush toy amongst the film’s youngest audiences.

“I’ve been doing voice work since the first Shrek movie, so as someone who is pitching story boards, you get brought into to provide a scratch voice and then to be lucky enough to land the character is fun,” he said. “I love entertaining. That’s why I got into animation to entertain kids and adults. It’s always great to have people react positivity to a role.”

One of the ways the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 DVD and Blu-Ray is truly special, beyond the four deleted scenes, is a feature on how the end credits were created by Seamus Walsh and Screen Novelties and Kevin Noel, end credits’ production manager. The home video release goes deep into showing how that wildly credit closing of the film was created.

Also a treat is a series of four shorts, crafted by David Feiss. We saw Steve’s First Bath and Attack of the 50-Foot Gummi Bear. Both are inspired by the Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs 2 world, but also allowed Feiss to add his own stamp with hand drawn animation. “These mini-movies on the DVD have that traditional look to them,” Cameron said.

Steve's First Bath Logo

The Cloudy with the Chance 2 DVD and Blu-Ray “is perfect for shorts, but I don’t know if audiences are up for going to see a feature hand-drawn animation anymore. I love hand drawn. My grandfather was an animator. Even I am more dazzled by the look of CG, there’s something to it.”

Rush DVD Review: True Tale Races Home

$

0

Rush is one thrilling ride of a movie that stars Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt and Daniel Bruhl as Niki Lauda, and it’s out now on DVD and Blu-Ray. Hunt and Lauda engaged in one of the sporting world’s most fierce rivalries as Formula 1 drivers staking their claim to be the best in the 1970s. Ron Howard directs in what is instantly one of his best films.

Rush DVD

Our theatrical Rush review found the film almost perfect -- from the thrills of the races and how Howard captured them to the performances of the leads, particularly Bruhl. The latter was honored with a Golden Globe nomination and was one of our Oscar nominations snubs and surprises as he was left off the list.

The key to this film, as teased in the Rush trailer, is the true story behind the titanic tale centered on the uber-dangerous world of Formula 1 racing. As shown in that teaser, Lauda almost died from severe burns in a race against Hunt, and the most inspiring aspect of Rush is how he managed to come back to race again, merely months from knocking on death’s door. And when it comes to bonus features on the Rush DVD and Blu-Ray, they are as powerful and as interesting as the film itself.

The Blu-Ray-only bonus features, for us, are highlighted by The Light of Speed and Filming F1. Oscar-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle shares his knowledge of how he filmed some of the most exquisite and exciting racing footage ever seen in the history of film. Mantle shows how he was able to put the audience in the driver’s seat to experience what Hunt and Lauda experienced, almost firsthand.

The Race for the Checkered Flag: The Making of Rush delves deep into Howard’s magic bag of tricks to show how this filmmaker who has crafted so much greatness, dug even deeper in making his latest. And although the visuals pop with excitement, the story wouldn’t be so powerful without the incredible words on the page of Peter Morgan’s script. The Oscar-nominated writer is profiled in Peter Morgan on Writing Rush and it is the rare, and supremely fascinating, look at how the words on the page make the leap to the big screen.

Daniel Bruhl Chris Hemsworth Rush

Finding James and Niki puts the spotlight firmly on the actors, and Hemsworth and Bruhl talk about how they found the human element to men who have become legends and icons. Bruhl’s recollection of his private plane flight with Lauda is nothing short of priceless.

In that vein, the feature Meeting James Hunt and Niki Lauda showcases real people who knew Hunt and know Lauda and how they feel that Howard’s film has captured their talents and personalities impeccably. Having this kind of insight after witnessing the magic of Rush only enhances the experience.

A bonus feature that is available on both the DVD and Blu-Ray is not to be missed for Howard fans. Ron Howard: A Director’s Approach is the rare look at how the gifted filmmaker makes his movies. It is a documentary that explores not only Rush, but everything that Howard has pointed a camera at.

Bad Grandpa Exclusive: Jeff Tremaine on How to Make a Funeral Funny!

Johnny Knoxville did it again with Bad Grandpa as the film became an international smash. As Bad Grandpa hits DVD and Blu-Ray we talked exclusively with director Jeff Tremaine about what didn’t make the movie that is now on the deleted scenes on the home video release, as well as what it is about Knoxville and his work with these types of hidden camera movies that people just can’t seem to get enough of.

Bad Grandpa Jeff Tremaine Johnny Knoxville

Movie Fanatic: Given the nature of a film like Bad Grandpa with its hidden camera hilarity, having the film arrive on DVD and Blu-Ray has to be an added joy that all that comedy gold that you had to cut can now be seen.

Jeff Tremaine: First, we added 10 minutes of footage that was right on the bubble of being in the movie. There are a few scenes that as we were putting this DVD together, I started watching them and I was really regretting that they didn’t make the final cut -- one scene in particular -- the male strip scene.

Movie Fanatic: Oh, I know it!

Jeff Tremaine: Well, Irving (Johnny Knoxville) has invaded a male strip club and he’s running around in his underpants with his prosthetic testicles hanging out scaring all the strippers and all the people around. We had a stripper pole stage there, and he took it to the pole. It’s unbelievably funny to me [laughs]. A lot of what we did wasn’t adding new scenes, but we opened up certain scenes. Like, in the beauty pageant, he actually wins the beauty pageant. My favorite thing on the Blu-Ray is we made featurettes about a lot of the scenes showing how we did things. We put him winning the beauty pageant in there. You get a lot of those behind-the-scenes moments. When we shoot a movie like this, we don’t know how people are going to react. So we shoot multiple people running through the same gauntlet and in the movie, we use the best one. But, in the DVD, we get to show you all the other takes. Sometimes, they’re equally funny. It’s just a roll of the dice to see which one you’ll use.

Bad Grandpa Blu-Ray

Movie Fanatic: And when you are making a movie like this as you just said, you don’t know how people are going to react. Is that part of the thrill?

Jeff Tremaine: Thrill, gamble… stress is a good word to use [laughs]. That’s what made it so fun and interesting. It’s very psychological to try to predict how people will react. We go in and pile on punch lines so you think you know where the scene is going to end. We try to stay ahead of what they’re going to do, so we can do this. Like, in the funeral scene, what do we do when the body hits the floor and everybody panics? How do we populate a funeral for a woman that didn’t exist and it’s open casket? One of the ways we populated it, and we have a featurette on this, is one of the producers called around and said she loved gospel. We could hire a gospel choir and that would take up 13 or 14 seats. We hired them. The producer said it was his grandmother that passed and they don’t have any friends left, but she loved gospel and if they could come prepared to sing the song Joy Joy Joy (Down in My Heart), that was her favorite. We planted the seed that the gospel choir would come in, ready to sing the song. But, right when they get there, we surprise them that the service is already on, and if they wouldn’t mind sitting in the seats at the service. Our joke was, we knew the body was going to fall. But then, to drive that further, what if we had them sing a ridiculous song while the body was on the floor? Sure enough, it totally worked [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: We know Johnny is amazing at this, he’s been doing it for years. But the young actor you got to play Irving’s grandson, Billy, is incredible, and we could even tell that from the first Bad Grandpa trailer. How on earth did you find Jackson Nicoll?

Jeff Tremaine: It’s a one in a million chance to find a kid like this. We tried finding other kids. There are a million kids that can act well. But, how many can hold up when the kitchen gets hot? This kid, he stirs it up even more! A lot of my job was calming him down and making him not push things too far.

Jackson NIcoll Johnny Knoxville Bad Grandpa

Movie Fanatic: What is it about these hidden camera films, and the films that Johnny does, that people seem to be getting more and more into?

Jeff Tremaine: He’s the best at this. For instance, there’s the scene in the diner where he stands up and he [expletive] his pants against the wall [laughs]. If that was a totally scripted movie, I don’t think that scene would be that funny. But, the fact that it feels like a scripted movie, but everyone’s watching it knowing that that is real, it makes it so funny.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives on screens April 4, but word is that Marvel Studios has already green lit the third installment starring Chris Evans and will bring back the second film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo. They join an elite group of filmmakers who have helmed a double dose of Marvel superhero cinema.

Chris Evans Captain America: The Winter Soldier

The Russos are now keeping company with Joss Whedon, who helmed The Avengers and now will direct Avengers: Age of Ultron. And then there’s Jon Favreau, who famously directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

With Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow in the second Cap movie and the introduction of Anthony Mackie as Falcon also, we suspect those two are likely to return in a third Captain America movie. But, then again, with Avengers: Age of Ultron arriving in between those efforts… anything can happen.

Check out the Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer and let us know below if you’re excited for the future of this series!

Need for Speed: Aaron Paul Dishes Driving a Dream

$

When Need for Speed producer Steven Spielberg chimes in on casting, and it's you he is zeroing in on, that could be a life-defining moment. That is exactly what happened to the film's star Aaron Paul. The veteran of Breaking Bad has a fan in the superstar filmmaker! “It’s just so surreal to have really anyone saying that they are a fan of our work," Paul said on a recent edit bay visit Movie Fanatic attended. "But then to have Spielberg call you up and say, 'Hey, it's Spielberg,' then you are trying not to panic!"

Aaron Paul Need for Speed Set

We were given an early look at over 30 minutes of Need for Speed footage, only some of it presented in that racy Need for Speed trailer.

Then, we had the chance to talk to Paul, as well as director Scott Waugh (his interview is coming later today!). The footage we saw was impressive, especially given the fact that Waugh insisted that the film feel like the classic 1960s and 1970s car movies that didn’t use CGI… because it wasn’t invented yet.

These are real actors driving real cars… really fast!

The story, based on the famed video game of the same name, follows Paul’s character Tobey -- who is wrongly found guilty in the street racing-related death of his friend. After several years in jail, he exits to his freedom, bent on bringing justice to the man who essentially put him in prison, played wickedly by Dominic Cooper.

“The hero of the film, Tobey, is the good guy, and an everyman. He comes out of prison focused on trying to right this wrong with a lot of revenge on his mind. Cooper’s character and Tobey have been arch rivals since they were kids,” Paul said.

“They lived on opposite ends of the track. Dominic’s character started racing professionally and Tobey continued street racing. Now Dominic’s character has started dating Tobey’s ex-girlfriend, which is another stab in the heart. So he’s got something against him.”

Paul was all too eager to get behind the wheel (check out Aaron Paul in Need for Speed driving school!) for Waugh (Act of Valor) in a feel-like-a-classic car movie, especially with a story that spoke to him.

Aaron Paul Stars in Need for Speed

“That was Scott’s vision. That was his main thing when he was pitching me this film. He wanted to do a homage that was a throwback to this 1960s-1970s classic car culture movies,” Paul said. “He wanted me study Steve McQueen and really watch movies that he was in because McQueen really lived and breathed racing. That is what Tobey Marshall does. He loves racing and he loves building cars. So it was a super fun film to shoot all over the country and drive around in the craziest cars possible!”

When we spoke to director Waugh, he called Paul “the next Steve McQueen.” In an era where Hollywood is looking for their next great action hero that can carry that mantle for a decade like Bruce Willis and his kind did previously, could Paul be the next one?

“I’ve never really thought of myself as being an action hero or a leading man or any of that, I’m a character actor. So this was such a surprise when DreamWorks came to me and said, ‘Would you like to do this?’" Paul admitted. “I may not have thought of myself as being an action hero but it is a blast! I will continue to do this for sure. But in between these films, if we do more, I’d like to do more character-driven stuff.”

Need for Speed is a film that has potential series written all over it. “When they approached me for this a franchise was always a possibility. It was not signing on for one movie but three,” Paul said of the future possibilities. “It was so much fun it was a joke. Not just because of the cars, which were a lot of fun, but this film has a great story attached to it and great characters. So I would love to dive deeper into these characters and dive deeper into Tobey’s past, which is a very intense one.”

Need for Speed Action Sequence

Besides having practical stunts throughout, Waugh insisted on not shooting in one area of the country and having it double for others. Need for Speed features a race cross country, and he shot it in multiple locales. “I loved it all,” Paul said of his favorite places.

“Macon, Georgia was beautiful. We did nothing but night shoots there for a race in the film and we just left skid marks all over the city, but everyone loved it. People just stayed up until the sun came up watching these scenes go down. But Moab, Utah had to be my favorite. You felt like you were on Mars. It was just a huge playground.”

Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce (who topped our Top 10 Villains of 2013!) star in the thriller that presents a landscape of the world a decade after the collapse of society. It is one scary scene. The film follows the story of a man who will do what he has to do to retrieve something that matters more to him than anything in the world from a ruthless gang.

The Rover also released its first poster, and is it us, or does the teaser trailer above remind you of the landscape of Mad Max? If it’s half as intense, violent and vicarious as that Mel Gibson movie, audiences are in for a thrilling treat.

X-Men Apocalypse: Bryan Singer Talks “Ancient Mutants”

As director Bryan Singer readies X-Men: Days of Future Past for release, he is clearly thinking ahead to the next film in the X-Men world. He recently announced the title would be X-Men: Apocalypse and has to be supremely excited with the prospect of honing in the story on the cast of the film that came before X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Singer stated that X-Men: Apocalypse will in fact be more of a sequel to X-Men: First Class than anything. “It’ll take place some time after this movie,” he admitted. “What happens in this movie brings about what’ll happen in that movie.”

And although details are pretty scarce for X-Men: Apocalypse, from the sounds of it, Singer and his team will at least partially explore some seriously old mutant myths.

“One thing that interests me is the notion of ancient mutants,” Singer said. “What would people thousands of years ago, without the benefit of science, think mutants were? And more importantly, what would mutants thousands of years ago think they were? Gods? Titans? Angels? Demons? And if such mutants did exist thousands of years ago, what became of them? Did they survive?”

Singer also released three new photos from his upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, due May 23. Check them out in the slideshow below!
