Mockingjay Part 2: Philip Seymour Hoffman Can Be Digitally Added

With the Philip Seymour Hoffman death, fans of The Hunger Games series wondered how his passing would affect Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2.

Most of his work on Mockingjay Part 1 was done… but what about Part 2?

A source close to the production talked to The Hollywood Reporter and said that given what was left to film, shots of the actor from other angles could be digitally inserted into the film so that no reshooting, or better yet, no recasting would be necessary.

Hoffman passed away earlier this week from a heroin overdose and his loss leaves a great hole in the talent pool here in Hollywood. It’s not just Mockingjay Part 2 that will be affected -- every film he could have made has suffered for it.

Let’s enjoy what Hoffman did leave us… click through and see his life in movies.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been back in action since he left the California governor’s office, more or less to decent success.

He’s got another actioner coming, and the Sabotage red band trailer has premiered teasing his story of the leader of an elite DEA troupe who may have a rat in its midst.

The first Sabotage trailer previews the tale of Schwarzenegger’s close knit group (that features Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Joe Manganiello and Josh Holloway) that makes one of the biggest drug busts in history. Then, members of his team start dying one by one. And… there’s $10 million missing from the bust!

Sabotage is from writer-director David Ayers (Training Day) and arrives in theaters March 28.

Weekend Movie Preview: February 7, 2014

The weekend movie preview seems to have a bit of war on the brain this time. There's the battle to save the LEGO world in The LEGO Movie, the effort to steal back priceless art stolen by the Nazis in the true story The Monuments Men and the fight to keep the peace at Vampire Academy.

The LEGO Movie: Phil Lord and Chris Miller do it again. After their success with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, the boys return to animation and create an utter masterpiece. Chris Pratt voices Emmet, a LEGO worker who could not feel more ordinary. Then, something extraordinary happens to him and he's called upon to save the world... with a little help from Batman (Will Arnett), Superman (Channing Tatum) and Wonder Woman (Cobie Smulders). As our The LEGO Movie review said, this is one comic adventure for all ages!

The Monuments Men: George Clooney returns to the director's chair, and also stars, in the unbelievable and important to be told true story of The Monuments Men. A group of scholars enlist in Clooney's troupe (Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman) and head behind enemy lines to try to get back all the priceless art that the Nazis have stolen. As reported in our The Monuments Men review, the film isn't just powerful war sequences, but it also makes a strong statement on how art defines us as a human race.

Vampire Academy: The book series by Richelle Mead comes to life and as much as fans of the series will adore this flick, our Vampire Academy review found that it needed to be darker. For a film that keeps teasing impending doom, it sure felt a whole lot like Mean Girls and a lot less like what it should. Then again, the writer and director each gave us Mean Girls and Heathers... so we probably should not be so surprised.

We think that The LEGO Movie is going to run away with the weekend. So, click through the below and check out these awesome The LEGO Movie clips!

Oscar Watch: Who Will Win Best Supporting Actor?

$

0

Last week Oscar Watch answered the question of who will win Best Supporting Actress. This week, we turn our attention to the guys and explore the nominees for Best Supporting Actor.

Dallas Buyers Club Jared Leto Matthew McConaughey

If there is one category to wager on, it is this one folks. Since Dallas Buyers Club came out, it has been a foregone conclusion that Jared Leto would win. He gave a powerhouse performance and it almost didn’t matter what came after -- although fellow nominees Bradley Cooper, Barkhad Abdi and Michael Fassbender may disagree!

Could there be an upset of Oscar epic proportions? Let’s take a look…

Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
The moment Leto appeared on screen in Dallas Buyers Club, he commanded our attention. Simultaneously heartbreaking and inspiring, his performance is one for the ages. After sweeping all the major awards, from the Golden Globes to the SAG Awards, it looks like there is no stopping Leto and his Oscar destiny.

Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
From Minneapolis actor/filmmaker to Oscar nominee, Abdi has to be thrilled to get the nomination. And unfortunately he will embody the “it’s great just to be nominated” feeling in this category this year. Not just anyone can go toe-to-toe with Tom Hanks, and Abdi does it so brilliantly. Plus, he got to say a line that has become an iconic phrase from the film, “I am the captain now.”

Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
The following three almost tie for second place in the voting, Oscar Watch predicts. In any other year, it is likely that Cooper could win. He is so all over the place emotionally in American Hustle, and that is exactly what his character requires. After his nominated turn in Silver Linings Playbook and now American Hustle, we get the feeling it’s only a matter of time until we say, “Oscar winner Bradley Cooper.”

Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
When 12 Years a Slave arrived in theaters, everyone thought Fassbender was the man to beat for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Unfortunately he ran into a brick wall called Jared Leto. His performance was largely what made 12 Years a Slave so difficult to watch. But then again, he was largely why we couldn’t look away.

The Wolf of Wall Street Jonah Hill

Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street
Some people were surprised that Hill scored his second nomination for Best Supporting Actor (after his role in Moneyball). Not us. He took the challenge of making a Martin Scorsese movie with The Wolf of Wall Street and ran with it… like a champion. It is the most un-Jonah Hill performance in his career, and like Cooper before, we think it is only a matter of time before Oscar winner is next to his name too.

Best Supporting Actor winner: Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club.

And while we’re on the subject of winners of the Best Supporting Actor prize, why not check out one of the best in recent memory with Christoph Waltz and watch Inglourious Basterds online

The LEGO Movie Has Awesome Debut: Weekend Box Office Report

Everything is Awesome for The LEGO Movie as the flick based on the iconic toys scored an impressive opening weekend debut of $69.1 million. The Chris Miller and Phil Lord written and directed film landed the second highest February opening in history, behind The Passion of the Christ’s $83.8 million.

The LEGO Movie Batman Emmet

The film also is the biggest opening weekend for a Warner Bros. animated movie in history, and thus it is no surprise that a The LEGO Movie sequel is already in the works.

Second place belong to another new movie to come out this weekend, the George Clooney written, directed and starring The Monuments Men. For an adult drama, they had to be thrilled with its $22.7 million opening.

The third spot on the weekend box office chart belongs to the film that has captured the top box office spot the last three weeks running, Ride Along. The Ice Cube and Kevin Hart action comedy has earned a total of $105.2 million in four weeks.

The movie that won’t quit, Disney’s Frozen, showed that audiences can't Let it Go as it came in fourth with $6.9 million and closing out the top five is the rom-com That Awkward Moment… with its $5.5 million.

The other new movie that opened this weekend, Vampire Academy, did not fare as well as the first two. It debuted in seventh place, with $4.1 million.

The top 10:

1. The LEGO Movie, $69.1 million
2. The Monuments Men, $22.7 million
3. Ride Along, $9.4 million
4. Frozen, $6.9 million
5. That Awkward Moment, $5.5 million
6. Lone Survivor, $5.3 million
7. Vampire Academy, $4.1 million
8. The Nut Job, $3.8 million
9. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, $3.6 million

RoboCop: Joel Kinnaman on Need To "Retell Our Favorite Stories"

When he first heard about a RoboCop reboot, star Joel Kinnaman thought it would be a movie he’d like to check out. “I got a call from my agent and I heard that there was a new movie of RoboCop being remade. My initial reaction was that I might see that in movie theaters,” Kinnaman told Movie Fanatic recently.

RoboCop Still

Although he didn’t think it was a good fit for him, that all changed when he heard that Jose Padilha was directing the project.

“I’ve seen his documentary and his two Elite Squad movies, and that completely changed my perspective of what the possibilities of a remake could be. There’s a lot of wrong reasons why you would make a remake, and there are some good ones. When I heard that Jose was going to direct it, I was pretty certain that it was going to be one of the good ones.”

Kinnaman heard Padilha's vision for the film, explored in these RoboCop featurettes, and saw how it could be a vehicle for a larger statement on society as a whole. “I thought it was a brilliant idea,” he admitted.

And then Kinnaman brought up an idea that we’ve always shared here at Movie Fanatic about remakes. Plays are redone hundreds of thousands of times, why not movies?

“I think it’s human nature in many ways that we retell our favorite stories. In the theater we do that all the time. I’ve seen four different Hamlets! Every one has given me something different. In this case it feels like in 1987, when this film was made, it was a futuristic vision that felt very much like fantasy. It was an incredible film,” Kinnaman said.

“But in 2013 the technology has had an exponential curve and we’re so far into the future that I think in 1987 we couldn’t imagine where we could be right now. And for us, where society has come today, the concept of RoboCop really made sense to revisit, because it was one of those great opportunities where you could meld a big scale exciting action movie, but at the same time get the opportunity to raise some very interesting political and philosophical questions.”

Once he agreed to the role, Kinnaman had to start thinking about putting on that suit. At first, it was not fun… in the least.

“The first time I put it on we were out at Pasadena. It was a hot day in LA. It was so uncomfortable, it was digging everywhere, pressing down in my shoulders and I was just sweating like a pig. After 20 minutes I said, 'I’ve gotta get out of this,'" Kinnaman said.

RoboCop Joel Kinnaman

But then, instead of a hindrance, he saw the RoboCop suit as an integral part of finding the man behind the machine.

“The suit became one of the first seeds that lead my imagination into the vulnerability that Alex Murphy felt after he became RoboCop. It was an interesting contrast because he’s got this body that is so powerful, but he feels very uncomfortable. He’s amputated from his throat down. He doesn’t know who he is anymore,” he said.

“My little level of uncomfortability led me to think of what Alex might have felt times a thousand. I was surprised to think that the suit that should make me feel so powerful actually makes me feel vulnerable.”

The first RoboCop, starring Peter Weller, is known for having some of the more iconic movie quotes of that era. The latest RoboCop was careful to bring in some of those lines in the remake, but not to overdo it so that the film stands on its own.

“There were a couple of versions of the script where so many of the catch phrases were in it. We all had a discussion that we’re doing a reboot of RoboCop but we’re not doing (first film director Paul) Verhoeven’s RoboCop. And Verhoeven is a film director that I have a lot of respect for, and he had a very specific tone,” Kinnaman said.

“Jose is a phenomenal film director that has a very specific tone to his films. So I think it would be a disservice and actually disrespectful to the original to sort of keep every line in there. We kept like one or two, maybe three, sort of as an homage to the predecessor, to what we love so much, but more than that would be a mistake. Honestly, it felt pretty cool to say a couple of those lines!”

The prayers of millions of Frozen fans have been answered -- Idina Menzel will be performing Let it Go on the Oscar stage!

Idina Menzel Pic

The Academy announced today that the star of Frozen (who plays Elsa) will sing her smash hit from the blockbuster film on March 2 when the Oscars are handed out for the best in film.

Menzel is a Tony Award-winning performer for her work in Wicked, and in our opinion, her song Let it Go is the front-runner to win Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Let it Go will go up against No Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Happy from Despicable Me 2, and The Moon Song from Her.

Shirley Temple Dead at 85: Sailing The Good Ship Lollipop in Heaven

Shirley Temple, beloved child star, has passed away at the age of 85. She endeared herself to hundreds of millions when she belted out the song The Good Ship Lollipop and became one of the first child stars in Hollywood history.

Temple was beyond cute, with her curly locks and sunshine personality. It all came through the silver screen when the format was young. She tapped. She sang. And all the while, she entertained a country (and the world) that was in the throes of the Great Depression and needed a sure-fire smile.

That Temple gave us… and so much more.

She later walked away from acting and took on a more service oriented role. Temple worked as a U.S. delegate to the U.N. and then served as an ambassador to Czechoslovakia, Ghana and eventually became the State Department’s chief of protocol.

Temple will clearly be missed. Let’s celebrate her life and click through and see what it was that made her so beloved to so many in the below slideshow.
