After Jai Courtney starred in A Good Day to Die Hard as John McClane’s kid, we thought this actor would be set to take over the world. Well, he has taken a step in that direction. News has arrived today that Courtney has been cast as Kyle Reese in the Terminator reboot.

Jai Courtney Jack Reacher

Courtney is joining some serious company in the iconic Terminator role. First Michael Biehn played the role in The Terminator and Anton Yelchin nailed it in Terminator Salvation.

Go back to see how it all started and watch The Terminator online.

The Terminator reboot will be directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) and hits theaters July 1, 2015… part of what we are calling the best summer movie season ever.

And also, rumors have The Terminator reboot being called Terminator: Genesis.

3 Days to Kill: Kevin Costner Talks Shooting Straight

$

There are many things that attracted Kevin Costner to star in 3 Days to Kill. Being directed by McG was one, and starring with a colorful cast of women was the other -- especially up-and-comer Hailee Steinfeld. “She was a very good screen partner,” Costner said.

Kevin Costner Stars in 3 Days to Kill

Costner is a CIA assassin who is forced to turn in his weapon when it is discovered that he has severe brain cancer. He immediately flies to Paris to reconnect with his estranged wife (Connie Nielson) and daughter (Steinfeld). Thinking he will just quietly ride off into the sunset, he promptly gets pulled into “one last job” by his CIA operative boss, played by Amber Heard. It’s a whole lot of women telling this trained killer what to do!

“When dealing with women, my boss, in this instance, my hellish relationship with her -- he gets frustrated by women, and my house is the same. And there’s a level of humor that I think that we try to bring into the movie without winking at the camera. It’s always funnier if you don’t wink, and say, ‘I’m really frustrated by you’ -- by her, by my wife, by my daughter,” Costner admitted.

“There’s a part of the world where he’s very efficient in his life, and he’s not that great in this particular aspect!”

The Oscar winner also enjoyed portraying a character that is somewhat of a relic, much like himself. “Listen, I still pay money to get into a phone machine, [so] it’s a little bit easier for me to make a connection. I think that our humor comes out of this stuff,” he said.

Of all the physical challenges he had to face in the many action sequences teased in the 3 Days to Kill trailer, it turns out the elements were the toughest. “You’re cold, and any time you’re cold, things are harder,” Costner said.

He also knows now, with age, when to say when and let the professionals do the action. “As I’ve been involved in my stunt career, you have to measure things. Because I wanted to ride with the buffalo (in Dances with Wolves), I wanted to do those things. Whenever you can put the audience in the car, on the horse carrying your daughter, they’re now in the movie,” Costner said. “But stunts have always had their place, and I have to measure them right now, and I’ve done things that if I make a mistake, you could die.”

Costner is an Academy Award-winning director. The actor must see something in his helmer when he attaches himself to a project and with 3 Days to Kill’s McG, it was the fact that no matter the thought process, the two were always on the same page.

3 Days to Kill Amber Heard Kevin Costner

“We didn’t differ that much and you shouldn’t, if you’re in sync. There’s going to be times when you have a different approach on a scene and it didn’t with us,” Costner said.

He even soaked up some fresh directorial knowledge. “I learned some things watching McG. I came prepared to do what I was supposed to do, which was act. And I was always prepared. When I direct, I tell my actors, ‘There’s going to be a day when I’m not as good as others, and on those days, I really need for you to be good.' I like to be on the floor, so if the coach tells me what to do out on the floor, I can get it done. So I’m really comfortable being directed.”

Between Man of Steel, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and now 3 Days to Kill, it may seem like Costner’s hitting a new groove. “Well, I’m worn out, now,” he said and laughed.

But he admits that he has never changed his approach to acting. “I’ve always felt like I’ve gotten better. I think that all of us can get better, and I feel like in my acting, I’m better than I was three pictures ago. I had the babies and then I went and did a little Hatfields & McCoys movie and then I lined up these movies. I wish they weren’t so packed. On the other hand, I’m glad I did them. I’ve always loved the business. I’m a romantic about it.”

The Academy Awards nominated The Wolf of Wall Street has announced plans to come home on DVD and Blu-Ray. Look for the latest Martin Scorsese classic to arrive March 25 starring Leonardo DiCaprio in what is the fifth film to feature those two working together.

The Wolf of Wall Street Blu-Ray

Many involved in the true story that is The Wolf of Wall Street earned Oscar nominations. Scorsese scored one for Best Director, while Jonah Hill earned one for Best Supporting Actor and Leonardo DiCaprio secured a nod for Best Actor.

The film tells the true story of Jordan Belfort and his several-year run on Wall Street where he banked hundreds of millions of dollars in not the most honest of ways. Through a drug and alcohol soaked tenure, he bilked investors out of tons of cash that would wind up putting him in prison.

The film is astounding, and was one of our Top 10 Movies of 2013. When it comes to bonus features, there is not too much, but the The Wolf Pack featurette sounds worth the price right there.

It features Scorsese, DiCaprio, Hill and other cast and crew on the journey it took to make The Wolf of Wall Street and reveal what they learned about Beflort’s rise to king of the financial market and the sacrifices he made along the way.

Pompeii Exclusive: Paul W.S. Anderson Says Milla Jovovich Found His Star!

We met Pompeii director Paul W.S. Anderson for an exclusive video interview and wondered how he found his star, Kit Harrington.

Harrington kills it as a slave who plays a huge part in the story of what happened to Pompeii as the local volcano would bury the community in ash… forever.

It turns out Anderson’s wife Milla Jovovich is a huge Game of Thrones fan, the show that made Harrington a star.

“Milla introduced me to the show and I watched it all in a 48-hour period,” Anderson proudly said.

Anderson also said that making Pompeii was a lifelong dream come true for a kid who grew up in Britain with Roman ruins all over the place. He had long been fascinated with the story of Pompeii and how its residents were frozen in time by the ash. And he wondered what we would do as a people knowing that the end was eminent.

Why not check Anderson working with his wife, Jovovich, as Alice and watch Resident Evil: Retribution online and check out Pompeii in theaters February 21.

Reboot can be a dirty word in Hollywood.

But, sometimes, a reboot can be better than the original. And even if it isn't better, the rebooted film could be at least on par, or take a different angle on a classic story.

We found 9 reboots that broke the mold and gave us something fresh, exciting and new. Just watch Batman Begins online or watch Star Trek online and there's all the proof you need!

Oscar Watch: Who Will Win Best Actor?

We’re getting down to the wire here on Movie Fanatic’s Oscar Watch!

We’ve taken a look at Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress. Now, we turn the spotlight on the five nominees for Best Actor before delving into Best Picture early next week.

Then, don't miss our annual "every category predicted" Oscar Watch February 27.

So, who will win Best Actor?

Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Until recently, Ejiofor was our front-runner. It seemed as if that all changed when the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes went to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. But, Ejiofor did win Best Actor at the BAFTA Awards this past weekend. Does that help him? Sure, but it might be a case of too little too late.

12 Years a Slave Star Chiwetel Ejiofor

He sure did give a commanding performance as a free man who was captured and sent into slavery for the titular amount of time in Steve McQueen’s masterpiece… one of our 13 Great Films We Never Want to See Again.

Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
DiCaprio owned The Wolf of Wall Street. He was in practically every scene and came on like a hurricane for the full three hours of the movie… not an easy task. DiCaprio will win this award one day -- we just don’t think it’s in 2014, although his work in The Wolf of Wall Street is his best in the five movies he’s done with director Martin Scorsese.

Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
McConaughey has been riding a wave of awards season buzz that has him picking up practically every trophy he’s eligible for. Not only did he drop dozens of pounds of weight to portray the real life cowboy turned AIDS advocate in mid-1980s Texas, but he channeled a power in his performance that the actor has never shown before.

Want further proof of just how incredible McConaughey is in the role? Watch Dallas Buyers Club online and see for yourself. It is beyond explosive, heartbreaking and inspiring.

Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Dern got the comeback he so deserved with his role in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska. He plays an old man struggling with his later years. He and his son (Will Forte) head out on a fruitless mission to claim a worthless sweepstakes prize in the titular state, and along the way, discover a bond that the two never knew they could have.

It is a touching performance and one that should remind casting directors what a powerhouse Dern is… but he will not win.

Christian Bale, American Hustle
Bale riveted in American Hustle and where he scored an Oscar for his work in David O. Russell’s The Fighter, he’ll just have to be happy to be nominated for his work in Russell’s American Hustle. That comb-over alone deserves some sort of award!

Best Actor Winner: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

Guardians of the Galaxy: Meet Rocket Raccoon

Hot on the heels of that beyond awesome Guardians of the Galaxy trailer, Marvel has smartly decided to roll out video vignettes to introduce us to the crazy cast of characters.

First up is Bradley Cooper’s vocal talents shown off as Rocket Raccoon.

As we learned in the first trailer, these Guardians of the Galaxy are actually a rag-tag group of criminals in many ways. But, if you think about it… they kind of remind us of classic Western outlaws, and who doesn’t appreciate them?!

Rocket, as Cooper says in the above video, “has anger issues.” And who hasn’t met a raccoon who doesn’t have those!

But, most raccoons don’t run with a group of Guardians of the Galaxy and are not incredibly adept at rapid firing a weapon that mows down the truly bad guys!

Check out more of these introductory videos on Movie Fanatic as they roll out and we’re sure you won’t want to miss Guardians of the Galaxy when it premieres August 1.

Pompeii: Kit Harrington Says Epic Made Him “Better” on Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington tells us, in our exclusive video interview, that he had a unique challenge when tackling the sword fighting on the set of his new action flick Pompeii.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson had him doing more than he ever did on the HBO smash hit. “It did help as in I’ve held a sword before,” Harrington said.

“But they are different fighting styles. Game of Thrones is very simplistic, practical. This -- because it’s gladiatorial -- is somewhat showmanship… and I’m fighting with two swords!”

For fans of his HBO show, you might see an improved swordsman battling foes as Harrington admitted that Pompeii has forced him to grow exponentially. “There’s like 13 more fights [in Pompeii] than I do on a whole season of Thrones,” Harrington admitted. “I learned immeasurably more than I ever had before on this film. So, when I went back to Thrones, I was better than when I left!”

In Pompeii, Harrington plays a slave who is forced to fight as a gladiator in the titular city… that as we all know, is about to meet its fate -- otherwise known as a volcano. Along the way, Harrington’s character finds love (with Emily Browning) and that aspect is the true heart of the disaster pic from Anderson.

3 Days to Kill Review: Kevin Costner Is a Killer Dad

$
0
0

In 3 Days to Kill, several of the most unlikely of forces come together. It is Kevin Costner getting back to his action hero roots, a la No Way Out. The film is directed by McG, who is best known for his work with the Charlie’s Angels movies and Terminator Salvation. Then, there is the fact that it is co-written by screenwriter-director extraordinaire Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, The Professional).

3 Days to Kill Hailee Steinfeld Kevin Costner

Does that stew add up to a pot boiler of suspense and action as it’s advertised in the 3 Days to Kill trailer? Well…

Costner stars as Ethan Renner, a CIA assassin who is quite good at his job. But, when a dizzy spell costs the agency a high profile target that is now on the loose, they decommission him when doctors reveal that he has brain cancer and only months to live.

We learn that Ethan has been all about his job and has been a terrible father and husband. Upon hearing his diagnosis, he heads to Paris to make up for lost time with his ex-wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and teenage daughter Zoey (Hailee Steinfeld). Think they’re going to be excited to see him? Not so much.

While balancing trying to spend his final months with his loved ones, his former job is pulling him back. It seems that the CIA isn’t taking losing an international terrorist so well and they have employed Agent Vivi Delay (Amber Heard) to bring back Ethan to find the man who they believe is somewhere in Paris.

The story is pure Besson, who has been writing much more in his later career than in his earlier. Between its Parisian setting and its one man in over his head for one last job scenario, it feels like bona fide Besson. But, in the hands of McG, there’s a true red, white and blue Americanism to it that fits this familiar Besson storyline pretty well.

Kevin Costner Stars 3 Days to Kill

And then there’s Costner. The actor is clearly in his element of late with a fantastic supporting turn in Man of Steel, the mentor action hero role in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and now as the somewhat (older) man of action in 3 Days to Kill. What he brings to the role, and it is clearly in Besson’s script, is a great sense of humor and levity. Sure, it may seem as if the world is falling apart around him, but in the hands of Costner, you always feel that he has a handle on it, and he does so with a terrific flair.

Much of that delicious humor is on display in his scenes with Steinfeld. The two make a great father-daughter cinematic tandem and it never feels forced and is incredibly natural. Nielsen is solid, but the part is slightly under-drawn, other than seeing her see her daughter reconnect with her long lost father.

Our 3 Days to Kill review finds that the film is a nice mix of the three main talents, but is not earth-shaking. It’s great to see Costner back in action, and with a director like McG and a script co-written by Besson, you would be hard pressed to find too much wrong with this fun ride. Well, there is Heard. She seems to not know what movie she is in as she plays her character like a femme fatale from a French noir flick… and that is not what 3 Days to Kill is at all.

Is 3 Days to Kill a Costner classic? Not quite, but if you watch Field of Dreams online you'll see one!

Pompeii Review: Love in an Age of Ash

$
0
0

Is director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil: Retribution) trying to do a Michael Bay and what he did with Pearl Harbor? Or, does Anderson’s Pompeii land on the love-in-the-wake-of-disaster side with James Cameron’s Titanic?

Kit Harrington Emily Browning Pompeii

Like those two other disaster movies, we all know what happened (Mount Vesuvius erupted) and the audience is keenly aware going into the theater that this puppy is not going to end well. In fact, seeing those people frozen in ash at the beginning of the movie truly sets our tone.

Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington is Milo. As a British citizen, we can see why Anderson would start Pompeii in Briton with Milo’s village being burned to the ground and people being massacred. The Roman reach was massive, and growing up around the ruins, Anderson pays tribute to that in the film’s opening moments.

Instead of being killed, Milo is taken into slavery and grows up to be a gladiator. Eventually he is so good, he winds up fighting in the giant coliseum of Pompeii. But, along the road to Pompeii and in chains, he meets Cassia (Emily Browning). She is the daughter of a lord of Pompeii (Jared Harris). He helps her carriage and the two connect via some serious eye flirtation. More on that later…

While this love affair story is fanned, Anderson keeps cutting to the volcano that does not seem all that happy. Steam is protruding from various parts of the mountain and it is clear, sooner than later, this sucker is going to blow. What we think speaks volumes about the story Anderson is telling through a screenwriting collective that includes Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes, is that we forget about the impending doom because we are rather wrapped up in the story of Milo.

Harrington makes a solid lead and we expect great things from him beyond Pompeii and his hit show. He tackles the action sequences with panache and power, whether the showmanship of a gladiator fighting or fighting for his life as he tries to escape with Cassia. And Harrington and Browning make a delightful pair. We pull for their romance to work out, even though we know -- for various and obvious reasons -- it will not.

Pompeii Kit Harington Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Harris is always astounding and he is caught between a falling rock from a volcano and a hard place due to an emissary from Rome named Corvus, played with steely Jack Bauer-type resolve by Kiefer Sutherland. Corvus is our villain and when he makes a play for Cassia, all in the name of good relations with Rome, it causes all sorts of issues. Sutherland overacts, sure, but every disaster movie needs someone who is chewing the scenery.

See, Anderson isn’t trying to be Cameron with his love story on a sinking iconic ship. And he’s not even attempting to be taken seriously, like Bay and his tale of the love found on that Day of Infamy. Our Pompeii review finds that the filmmaker is just trying to make a good old-fashioned disaster movie… that just happens to have a love story driving its plot.

Why not check out Anderson's most recent work as you can watch Resident Evil: Retribution online!
