The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Clip: What Is Going On With Me?

$

Although we’ve seen a slew of electric footage with each successive The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer, viewers have yet to witness a single film clip.

That changes right now! Sony has unleashed the first clip from the Marc Webb movie and it is fantastic. It features Jamie Foxx as Electro and Andrew Garfield back as Spider-Man.

The two are in Times Square and we get the feeling it is the first time that the public at large (and perhaps the audience) has met Foxx’s Electro. And, let’s just say it’s not going so well.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters May 2 and also stars Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn/Green Goblin, Sally Field, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper and B.J. Novak. Oh yeah… and Emma Stone is back as Gwen Stacy.

Get ready for the big sequel and watch The Amazing Spider-Man online!

7 Keys to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Being Great
One of the things we adore about Spider-Man in general is he always has a sense of humor, no matter what he's doing... even in the most dire of circumstances. We suspect in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that will grow even further.

Spidey's Humor Must Continue

1. Spidey's Humor Must Continue

One of the things we adore about Spider-Man in general is he always has a sense of humor, no matter what he's doing... even in the most dire of circumstances. We suspect in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that will grow even further.

Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy Romance Grows, But Not Without Peril

2. Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy Romance Grows, But Not Without Peril

Gwen and Peter truly hit it off in the first film, now their romance must continue and grow… but there must be some conflict. We suspect a certain villain (or three) will have something to do with that. It was wise for the Shailene Woodley Mary Jane character to have her scenes cut. We're not quite ready for that kind of relationship conflict.

Don't Batman and Robin The Villains

3. Don't Batman and Robin The Villains

Batman and Robin famously overcrowded its film with too many villains. Even though we know there are three in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we know that the main one will be Electro (Jamie Foxx). The Rhino (Paul Giamatti) is supporting and Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin will likely just be introduced as his villain will play a bigger role in subsequent films. Well, let's hope that is how it goes!

Let Foxx be Foxx

4. Let Foxx be Foxx

Electro is such a fascinating villain. How does Spider-Man deal with fighting someone who can literally electrocute you? And Foxx is an Oscar-winning actor. Webb, we're sure, won’t let Foxx be overshadowed by layers of Electro make-up or lightning-wielding power. Foxx is best when he is just being Foxx. We haven't seen him play a true villain before, and… we. can't. wait.

Spider-Man Loves Being Spider-Man

5. Spider-Man Loves Being Spider-Man

Now that we got that origins story over with, we hope that even though the stakes of danger are higher in the second film Peter Parker is having a true blast being the superhero. Now that he has command of his powers, look for him to bask in the glow of being… well, Spider-Man!

Harry Osborn & Peter Parker Friendship Must Flourish

6. Harry Osborn & Peter Parker Friendship Must Flourish

One of the great joys of the Raimi trilogy was the friendship (before it turned sour) between Harry Osborn and Peter Parker. With actors as powerful as Dane DeHaan and Andrew Garfield, we look forward to much joy between these two… before their epic Spider-Man and Green Goblin battle.

Leave Us On a Cliffhanger

7. Leave Us On a Cliffhanger

We suspect that Spidey will do just fine against Electro, but there must be a cost paid to being a hero and we suspect that will happen in the closing moments of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And here's an idea: Leave us hanging. We remember when Empire Strikes Back ended and we had to wait, impatiently we might add, for Return of the Jedi. With the power of the Spider-Man mythology… there is no reason The Amazing Spider-Man 2 could not leave us panting for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Liam Neeson Was Asked to be James Bond? You Bet!

Liam Neeson, we always thought, would have made a good James Bond. Sure, he’s become an action star all on his own, thanks to turns in Taken, The Grey and recently the number one movie Non-Stop. Oh, and who can forget how he wielded a light saber in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace?

Liam Neeson Stars in Non-Stop

But, in a recent interview with the Hull Daily Mail, Neeson admitted that back when Bond was shifting gears after Timothy Dalton, producers had asked him to pick up the title of 007.

“I was heavily courted, let’s put it that way,” Neeson said.

That means he would have been up for the Bond role in License to Kill that went to Pierce Brosnan. But, love got in the way, and due to the lengthy far-away shooting schedules that are required of a Bond, he said no.

”It was about 18 or 19 years ago and my wife-to-be [Natasha Richardson] said, ‘If you play James Bond we’re not getting married!’ And I had to take that on board, because I did want to marry her.”

Turning down James Bond for love… now that’s romantic! And besides, his action cred would have been different, and perhaps he never would have made the movies he’s making now.

Watch Taken online and see Neeson’s action resurgence in high gear. And in hindsight, because we adore him in roles such as that in Taken, we’re kind of glad he turned down the part.

Divergent: Shailene Woodley Has Issues With Twilight

Shailene Woodley is about to literally kill it as Tris Prior in Divergent. While she was making the press rounds, the inevitable comparisons to other YA page-to-screen efforts came up. Sure, The Hunger Games she can appreciate. But, don’t get her started with the Twilight Saga.

Shailene Woodley is Tris in Divergent

Twilight, I'm sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship,” Woodley said to Teen Vogue.

See, we’ve always kind of thought that too. Many have labeled it wildly romantic. But, us, we’re siding with Woodley on this one.

“She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve."

In Divergent, there is a love story between Tris and Four (Theo James). You won’t hear it from us how that goes (more on our coverage of Divergent as the film’s March 21 release date gets closer).

Until then… enjoy these character posters of Tris and the rest of the cast of the highly anticipated Divergent! And let us know in the comments section below what you think of Woodley's comments on Twilight!

21 TV Shows Turned Movies That Work: From 21 Jump Street to The Fugitive!

Taking a TV show and making it a full length movie, more often than not, does not work.

But, there are times that it works and works so well it wins Oscars or gets a sequel.

Just watch 21 Jump Street online and you'll see what we mean! And sometimes, a TV to movie effort even gives us movie lines that we still quote years later... just check out these Borat quotes and you'll agree!

We present the 21 TV shows that became movies that work!

21 TV Shows That Made Good Movies
Turning a somewhat cheesy 1980s cops go undercover in high school TV show into a full blown action comedy was a risk. And it paid off... big time. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum nailed it. And it gets major points for the Johnny Depp cameo!

Turning a somewhat cheesy 1980s cops go undercover in high school TV show into a full blown action comedy was a risk. And it paid off... big time. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum nailed it. And it gets major points for the Johnny Depp cameo!

Starsky & Hutch

2. Starsky & Hutch

Starsky & Hutch was smart in not trying to take these beloved characters and putting them in modern times. By leaving them in the era from which they came, Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller charmed us anew.

The Brady Bunch Movie

3. The Brady Bunch Movie

The Brady Bunch Movie, on the other hand, was wise to take their central family, have them stuck in the 1960s, early 1970s, and put them in the 1990s! It worked on so many levels.

Dragnet

4. Dragnet

Taking a beloved 1960s TV cop show and giving it a comedy makeover might have seemed risky. But, with Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd in the lead roles... it somehow worked! Plus, that was one killer rap song as its theme. Who thought we'd ever hear Hanks rap?!

Serenity

5. Serenity

Joss Whedon, that's all you need to say about Serenity. Firefly was cancelled before its time, but then if it wasn't, we wouldn't have gotten this gem!

Charlie's Angels

6. Charlie's Angels

The key to taking Charlie's Angels and bringing it to the big screen was casting. How much did they nail it with Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore (who produced) and Cameron Diaz. Plus, having Bill Murray as Bosley was a stroke of genius.

The Addams Family

7. The Addams Family

Dum dum dum dum... dum dum dum dum... that theme song is classic! And so is this film that featured Raul Julia and Angelica Huston as the leaders of The Addams Family. And thank you very much for introducing us to the magic that is Christina Ricci!

Pee-wee's Big Adventure

8. Pee-wee's Big Adventure

Pee-wee's Big Adventure took off from the Saturday morning children's show and became a beloved movie directed by Tim Burton no less! The story of a boy and his bike was more than worth the leap to the silver screen.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America

9. Beavis and Butt-Head Do America

Beavis and Butt-Head... who would ever have dreamed that they could have successfully made the leap from MTV niche show to blockbuster film? Never underestimate Mike Judge!

Mission: Impossible

10. Mission: Impossible

Tom Cruise could not have been more perfect to embody Ethan Hunt. And Brian De Palma of all people as director... also perfect! And that wire scene in the CIA... still a classic!

Twilight Zone: The Movie

11. Twilight Zone: The Movie

Twilight Zone: The Movie was a stroke of brilliance. Taking the Rod Serling classic and realizing that it would take not one, but four great directors to bring it to the big screen was a stroke of genius.

South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut

12. South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut

See Beavis & Butt-head... and this time, don't underestimate Trey Parker and Matt Stone!

The Fugitive

13. The Fugitive

A TV to screen effort that becomes an Oscar winner? The Fugitive did it, thanks to an extraordinary turn by Tommy Lee Jones. And Harrison Ford, well, he can do no wrong.

The Naked Gun

14. The Naked Gun

The Naked Gun did not quite work as a TV show. But Leslie Nielsen and company sure made movie comedy magic on the big screen. So much so, we even got a sequel.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

15. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

We specifically mention this Star Trek movie because it is one of the best... and it is specifically based on one specific episode from the Star Trek series. Simply. Astounding.

The Untouchables

16. The Untouchables

Another TV show that results in becoming an Oscar winner, The Untouchables finally gave Sean Connery his Academy Award, and showed us why Kevin Costner was a fantastic choice to play Eliot Ness.

Jackass: The Movie

17. Jackass: The Movie

Johnny Knoxville and his merrymen went from MTV jokesters to big screen monsters with their first movie. Four movies later... they're still killing it.

Borat

18. Borat

Going from a bit on Da Ali G show to big screen blockbuster had to seem like a risk from the outset. But in the hands of talented Sacha Baron Cohen, in hindsight, it seems like a no-brainer.

Wayne's World

19. Wayne's World

OK, not technically a TV show, but it was ON a TV Show. Wayne's World set the standard for taking an SNL bit and making it a movie. In fact, they're still trying to replicate its success.

The A-Team

20. The A-Team

The A-Team is divisive, we'll admit it. But we loved the movie and the casting could not have been more spot-on. Liam Neeson? Bradley Cooper? Awesome, simply awesome.

X-Files: Fight the Future

21. X-Files: Fight the Future

At the time, X-Files was still on the air... so for Chris Carter to give us a movie with our beloved Scully and Mulder was a dream come true. And it worked as well, which did not hurt.

Black Widow Movie: Kevin Feige Says Question Is "When" Not If

Movie Fanatic just came out of the press day for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and someone who plays a pivotal role in that film is Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.

As she made quite a splash in Iron Man 2 and then with those The Avengers quotes, fans have been clamoring for a Black Widow solo movie ever since. Given what we've seen from her turn in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that demand should only grow.

Captain America: Winter Soldier Scarlett Johansson

Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige told us today that they are listening and that it is not a question of if, but when we can expect Johansson to be the title character in a Marvel movie.

“I think the idea would be great. We’ve got various outlines and ideas of where to take that. As Scarlett already said, there’s a big element that explores her back story in an upcoming Marvel feature,” Feige said… of course referring to Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Johansson has said she has a vital role.

“The question really is, ‘When will we take her out of the ensemble and have her do her own thing?’ As you saw in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as you’ll see in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she’s really the key to so much of the plot development.”

Stay with us as we roll out all of our Captain America: The Winter Soldier coverage close to the film's April 4 release date. But until then, catch up with Cap and Black Widow and watch The Avengers online.

The LEGO Movie: Chris McKay to Helm Sequel

The LEGO Movie, given its astounding success, has had its sequel green lit. No one was really surprised by the news of The LEGO Movie sequel, but the mystery remained as to who would direct it.

Chris McKay Photo

The directors of the first film, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, have said they will move on to other projects (they’re currently putting the finishing touches on 22 Jump Street).

We felt a logical choice for the job would be the first film’s animation director. And given what he told us in our Chris McKay exclusive interview, he is well versed in the universe and even had some ideas as to who he would like to appear in a follow-up.

News has arrived today that in fact McKay has been offered the job and thankfully, he took it. After all, it was Lord and Miller’s associates on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, who took over and helmed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. There is a successful precedent if there ever was one.

The LEGO Movie 2 has already chosen a release date of May 26, 2017 and we’re counting the days. Until then, click through and check out our favorite The LEGO Movie quotes below!

Single Moms Club Exclusive: Amy Smart "Not Scared to Make a Fool of Myself"

$

Amy Smart is no newbie to the film world, yet she achieved a true first with Tyler Perry’s Single Moms Club. After making a name for herself in films such as Road Trip (one of our top 10 road trip movies!) and Crank, she had rarely been part of an ensemble. And the fact that it was a female-driven large cast in Perry’s latest, was all the better.

Cast of Single Moms Club

We caught up with Smart for an exclusive interview where she dished her hopes for the movie (real Single Moms Clubs!) and how she’s not “afraid to make a fool of myself.” Which of course, in a comedy… is a very good thing.

Movie Fanatic: The movie was inspiring and funny… was it like that on set too?

Amy Smart: Yes! That was Tyler Perry leading the helm. He’s so heartfelt and deep, but he also knows how to laugh and have fun. I think that was the vibe on set. He wanted all of us to have a really fun time shooting this, and having that intention, we all arrived ready to have fun.

Movie Fanatic: What expectations did you have for working on a Tyler Perry movie… and how were those different than the reality?

Amy Smart: I was slightly intimidated to work with Tyler Perry because he’s so successful. He’s so good. He’s built this amazing empire. I didn’t know what to expect. The minute I spoke to him, he told me that people come to set and have fun and I want you to have that experience. I just felt at ease and he was really wonderful. Because he’s such an actor’s director, those moments where you need to go deep emotionally, he was able to talk me there and get me to that place and what it represented in the movie. He made all those cathartic moments matter.

Movie Fanatic: You had to act with a baby. Was that a challenge? I mean, you improv with Wendi McLendon-Covey, but you kind of have to improv with a baby!

Amy Smart: With babies it’s hard to have much of a scene [laughs], especially because you don’t want to be holding them here (points to her waist), because you want to be able to cut them out [laughs]. You want to say, “Look at this baby,” and then do the scene with a fake baby [laughs]. You never know what you’re going to get.

Movie Fanatic: When you look back at this experience 20 years from now, what will you remember most?

Amy Smart: To me, in my life, there’s nothing better than sitting around with a small group of girlfriends having a glass of wine or tea and just chatting and talking. It’s like a group therapy session. When we had those scenes where we sat around chatting -- and of course Wendi and Cocoa (Brown) were so funny. Their improv was outrageous. That was a highlight having scenes when they’re together. I also like working with Ryan Eggold, because he’s such a lovely person. Yes, he’s good looking, but he’s a warm, nice person. We had fun with improv too.

Movie Fanatic: That was one of the best scenes in the movie where you and him are clearly talking about sex, but you’re using carpentry as a metaphor. How comfortable are you with improv?

Amy Smart: I love that stuff because I’m not scared to make a fool of myself. It was very helpful because Tyler Perry was in the background feeding me funny lines that he was coming up with. It was just in the moment, using his lines to come up with my own. The hardest part is keeping a straight face, like, “Am I really going to say this right now?” We’re talking about sex, but we’re really talking in circles around it!

Single Moms Club Amy Smart Cocoa Brown

Movie Fanatic: One thing about the film, evident from that first Tyler Perry's Single Moms Club trailer, is how much of an ensemble this is. As an actress, what are the unique joys of working in an ensemble piece?

Amy Smart: For me, I feel like I haven’t worked with a ton of female actresses or any kind of female-driven films. It was such a new experience to be around these strong, funny women. I feel that women are just more complicated. Being an actress, I’ve been the “girlfriend of,” “the wife of...” the side character. Being around these women felt empowering. There was something electric working off each other. And we’re all so different as people, so it was fun complimenting each other.

Movie Fanatic: There are so many elements to the film. If you had a hope for what the audience will take away from Single Moms Club, what would it be?

Amy Smart: Honestly, when we were shooting, it is such a great idea to have single mom clubs. It seems like a perfect support group for women. And the way it was structured in the movie… one woman babysits and the rest go out. They take turns. It’s like having a sisterhood. If anything, that would be my encouragement for women to feel that they can have each other, be supportive of each other. Not competitive or alienating each other, just embracing each other.

The Robin Hood story is so compelling, it's hard to mess that up. Yet, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe combined yet again and the result was average. Don't get us wrong, Robin Hood was pretty good, but it should have been awesome!

Troy

6. Troy

Troy is another story that is so explosive it should make for an equally explosive movie. Yet this Wolfgang Peterson-directed effort starring Brad Pitt was anything but. Disappointed!

Be Cool

7. Be Cool

Get Shorty was so... well, cool! Then why was this sequel such a misfire? Elmore Leonard wrote the book, as he did with the original. Somehow, magic did not strike twice.

Iron Man 2

8. Iron Man 2

After the success of Iron Man, and the track record that Marvel has, one would think that Iron Man 2 would have upped the ante. Instead, it felt cartoonish and had a villain that we truly didn't care much about.

The Godfather: Part III

9. The Godfather: Part III

The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II were the only movies in history to each win Best Picture. Then how on Earth did the same creative team come up with this? "Pull me back in..." No, thanks!

Pearl Harbor

10. Pearl Harbor

One of the worst tragedies in American history had to be filled with incredible stories of bravery, love lost and flag waving opportunities. What Michael Bay did with what happened on December 7, 1941 was give us an overstuffed love triangle that had absolutely no zing.

The Matrix: Reloaded

11. The Matrix: Reloaded

Reloaded? What needed to be reloaded? The Matrix was a genre bending, historical moment in cinema. What in the name of all that is holy was The Matrix: Reloaded? That rave scene, an overcrowded plot... it all added up to a whole lot of nothing and fans being crushed.

Terminator Salvation

12. Terminator Salvation

Perhaps it was the direction. Maybe it was a Terminator story we didn't need or want. Whatever it was, a fantastic cast (Bryce Dallas Howard, Christian Bale, Sam Worthington) was as wasted as the film's desolate landscape.

Need for Speed Exclusive: Director Says Aaron Paul Is Next Steve McQueen

When we met Scott Waugh and got a preview of his racing epic Need for Speed several months back at his studios in Culver City, California, he said something that stuck with us. He compared star Aaron Paul to icon Steve McQueen.

McQueen starred in a few movies that featured him driving fast (one is included in our 11 car racing movies that meet our need for speed). So when we caught up with Waugh (and stunt coordinator Lance Gilbert) for an exclusive video interview… we wanted to know why he thinks Paul is that guy.

“He’s the kind of actor that if this was a shallow movie, he would never do it,” Waugh admitted about the film’s strong story. “He has so much integrity as a person and as an actor that it shines through in his performances. He brings that sexy new dangerous leading man that Steve McQueen had.”

Waugh and his stunt coordinator also tell us what stunts were maybe considered too dangerous given how the helmer wanted this film to be filmed practically with no computer graphics. Watch the Need for Speed trailer and you’ll see what we’re talking about when we say that this film pushes the envelope… and boundaries.

Two clips from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have debuted and they both feature Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.

The first showcases a scene with Emma Stone and Garfield, where Stone's Gwen Stacy is in a bit of trouble. And that trouble is a huge part of the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man's plot!

The second sequence features our first real look at Garfield reunited with his childhood BFF, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan). The title is kind of cute... Skipping Rocks. Nothing like a couple of friends at the park skipping stones on the water! Especially when you think about the fact that one is Spider-Man and the other is really Green Goblin!

Batman vs. Superman: Jeremy Irons Says Script “Isn’t Entirely Finished”

Jeremy Irons, who was recently cast as Alfred with Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, was talking to Variety and let something slip about Batman vs. Superman. Although shooting is set to begin next month on the Man of Steel sequel, it appears the script for the film is not done. “The script isn’t entirely finished,” he said in the interview. Wait, what?!

Batman vs. Superman Logo

Not a big deal really, it’s probably almost done! "I've read a script, but it's not finalized. We haven't started work yet. It'll be as much a surprise to me as you!"

OK, we’re sure it’s fine… after all, this film is a behemoth with a lot of details that must be ironed out. That’s probably all it is… but on another note, the Oscar winner is truly excited to work closely with the Oscar winner for Argo, which of course is Ben Affleck as Batman. And he thinks Affleck will kill it.

"I think his casting is a wonderful idea. He's a lovely man and an interesting actor,” Irons said. “I've only met him once so I'm looking forward to getting to know him."

While we’re waiting for Batman vs. Superman, why not watch Man of Steel online and see how it all began.

Mean Girls Celebrates Tenth Anniversary: Reunion Likely?

$

It is hard to believe, but Mean Girls arrived on screens ten years ago.

And besides having us fondly remember those biting Tina Fey written Mean Girls quotes, it has audiences wondering about some sort of reunion. It does not even have to be a sequel that features a high school reunion story, perhaps a tenth anniversary DVD with commentary by the cast recorded this year?!

Very Mean Girls

Tina Fey was asked about the Mean Girls reunion rumors recently on the Muppets Most Wanted premiere red carpet. She teased… a musical?

"We're working on the musical, that's going to be in a couple years, I guess,” she told E!

“So hopefully there will be like a screening or a party, but that's it. But that would be good, right? I hope everyone can come. I hope we can organize something."

She’s kidding, right? Although if they can turn Rocky into a musical, anything can happen.

But, it’s hard to deny the clamoring for fans of the hit film to see Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and Fey together again. On the other hand, they’ve all moved on to other things -- with many to very big things.

Well, Lohan at least sure seems to want it. Want it, perhaps need it is the better word. She was recently on Jimmy Fallon talking about her OWN reality show and said this.

"I saw Tina and she mentioned doing a reunion,” Lohan said. “She said she was talking to Lorne [Michaels] about it. She's talking to the big boss."

One can dream, Lindsay. And so can we… but until then, let’s remind ourselves of the greatness and watch Mean Girls online

Veronica Mars Exclusive: Jason Dohring Dishes "Underdog" Leading Lady

Veronica Mars and Kristen Bell are back, and playing a huge role as he did on the show as Logan Echolls is Jason Dohring.

Veronica Mars Jason Dohring Kristen Bell

We caught up with Dohring for an exclusive interview to explore the phenomenon that is Veronica Mars, what makes it so special, his feelings about the Kickstarter campaign that essentially produced the movie and what is so truly special about the show creator, who is now the writer-director on the Veronica Mars movie.

Movie Fanatic: I have to start, you do a show, you hit your mark and people love it. It goes off the air and you go off and do your thing. What were your first thoughts when you heard that Veronica Mars was going through Kickstarter to try to become a movie?

Jason Dohring: I never thought, “Hey, that would be really cool?” It was a pipe dream that I never thought would happen. Rob (Thomas) is really cool with original story ideas, so, I’m sure he had them after the show wrapped. I brushed it off because it had been years and years and years. Even still, I always run into fans who tell me they’ve heard that there was going to be a movie and they’re asking me about it! I think the way we left it off with that final scene sure had everybody thinking that there could be more. It was kind of unresolved. So, I think the fans wanted it because of how it ended. Fans told me, “It’s not done for us.” I think that was the key to the Kickstarter thing.

Movie Fanatic: That’s what struck me, I feel like the show, and its premise, would be a natural fit for the movies. The fact that a Veronica Mars movie didn’t happen sooner was a bit of a surprise. Then again, Veronica Mars has always been a surprise. Thinking back to the show, what is the prevailing memory you have from it?

Jason Dhoring

Jason Dohring: I think my love of acting truly arrived with this character. He is a character that you can truly sink your teeth into and he’s multidimensional. He wasn’t just a badass. He wasn’t just the love interest. It had all those elements in the show. That’s what's so cool about the whole thing is this was my first project right out of high school. I had a theory about acting and acting classes I took, but this was my chance to test those theories and practice the craft.

Movie Fanatic: I actually visited the set in San Diego for the show and the thing that struck me about the cast is that it felt like a family. You were so tight. Sure, the years have gone by, but when you showed up that first day on the movie set, was it like not a day had gone by?

Jason Dohring: About a week into it, we had a party scene and everybody was on the set and it was so fun. Because everyone was there that day, we had loads of press there and it started to hit us how big it had become and we realized that it had grown even more since the show ended.

Movie Fanatic: What do you think it is about Veronica Mars that it has only grown in popularity and resonance since it last aired?

Jason Dohring: It’s hard to put a finger on it. I have not done it yet [laughs]. You have a mystery aspect to it. You have an underdog leading lady and I think that people can relate to that. I think the brighter people, the dialogue matches up really well because it’s so witty and fun and the jokes are on a higher level.

Movie Fanatic: The movie is about to hit, and excitement was even through the roof when the Veronica Mars trailer arrived... What are your thoughts and feelings as a new chapter of Veronica Mars is about to start, even the buzz that went through the roof with the debut of the Veronica Mars first two minutes?

Jason Dohring: It captures everything our show had and possibly it's even more cinematic with the dark, rich colors. It is very true to our show. Boy, the thing about the show is it goes really deep. There was never any superficial storylines going on. We intertwine a lot of storylines and think that the movie written by Rob, it’s not just window dressing. It’s not just us getting back together. There is a heavy plot and it is going to get people going. There’s suspense and relationships grow, everything people like about the show.

Veronica Mars Kristen Bell Jason Dohring

Movie Fanatic: What is something that you're personally excited that your character got to do in the movie?

Jason Dohring: I had to drop 20 pounds, which was kind of cool [laughs]. I had to get in fighting shape, so to speak. I’ve never had to change my body for a role, which I really liked.

Movie Fanatic: Rob is such a visionary. What most impressed you about him working as a film writer-director versus him as a TV writer-director?

Jason Dohring: He’s a wizard with a storyline. He has a very amazing way of talking to us as actors about what you’re filming that really transcends. I think he was even more centered as a director on the movie. He could come up with lines that worked well, while we were shooting a scene. It was just perfect. The whole thing is.

Captain America 3 Will Battle Batman vs. Superman

When Batman vs. Superman moved its release date to May 6, 2016 to give Zack Snyder enough time to properly follow up his sequel to Man of Steel, one thing struck us… this is truly the first time that Marvel and DC Comics will go head-to-head in cinemas.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Star Chris Evans

Marvel, always thinking way ahead, had staked out May 6, 2016 for the first of three “unnamed” movies. The general thinking was that it would be the sequel to this August’s Guardians of the Galaxy. That would be wrong.

The Hollywood Reporter just broke the news that the Marvel movie going head-to-head with Batman vs. Superman will be Captain America 3.

While doing press for Captain America: The Winter Soldier this week, Marvel head Kevin Feige admitted not only that a Black Widow solo movie would come (it’s a question of when, not if), but also that he is not planning on moving his first release from 2016 because of Snyder and Warner Bros.’ move to that release date for the Superman follow-up.

Wow… simply wow, people! This is huge news. The two super comic houses have long battled, in a sense, from afar. Now, they are going head to head and we know what the two properties from these two giants will be.

So, if you could go into the future and walk up to the box office on May 6, 2016… which movie would you choose?

As we get ready for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, enjoy these stills while we ponder the future!

And why not head into the past and watch Captain America: The First Avenger online and watch Man of Steel online as we gear up for that super weekend in 2016.

Single Moms Club Exclusive: Wendi McClendon-Covey Chats Life After Bridesmaids

Wendi McClendon-Covey has tickled our funny bones since we first saw her on Reno 911! But, it was her turn uttering some of those unforgettable Bridesmaids quotes that put her on the world’s pop culture map. McClendon-Covey is still being funny, but is also expressing those dramatic muscles in Tyler Perry’s Single Moms Club.

Single Moms Club Cast

We caught up with McClendon-Covey and asked her about what life has been like since Bridesmaids, what it means to her to appear in a Tyler Perry movie and with her hit show The Goldbergs chugging along, how working steadily in both film and TV has enriched her creatively.

Movie Fanatic: How has the world changed for you since we first met on the set of Bridesmaids?

Wendi McLendon-Covey: I got some better representation [laughs]. And that’s made all the difference.

Movie Fanatic: When you got asked to be in a Tyler Perry movie, what did that mean to you? He’s such an institution.

Wendi McLendon-Covey: I was surprised that he even knew who I was, which was great. He just wanted to make sure I could do something dramatic. So, I filmed something with my phone and sent it in. Then, it was off to the races. It was a short amount of time between me getting the call and us shooting. It was intense. But, what made me really want to do it was I really love ensemble comedies, but the other girls in the cast. I wanted to work with them anyway, so getting them all in one place… what’s not to love.

Movie Fanatic: Tyler’s prolific as a writer clearly. But, as an actress, what’s he like as a director?

Wendi McLendon-Covey: He’s also an actor, so he’s sensitive. He’ll coax you down the rabbit hole in the rabbit parts. We all had breakdown/breakthrough moments [laughs] in this movie in different scenes. I was happy about that. He does work fast. For someone who writes, he’s not someone who won’t listen to other ideas. He even put the set decorators in touch with us. So they wanted to know what I wanted my office to look like. You couldn’t give me a better present! I loved it.

Movie Fanatic: You mentioned the ensemble, from Bridesmaids to Tyler Perry's Single Moms Club, what it is about acting in ensembles that is so joyous?

Wendi McLendon-Covey: I like the team aspect of it. I like feeling the other actors' energy and encouragement. I like having people to go on the journey with. Everything is better as a team.

Movie Fanatic: There are so many aspects to this film because there are so many diverse stories in it. What most touched you?

Wendi McLendon-Covey: The underlying feeling that there’s a stigma attached to single moms that’s so aggravating to me to watch and to play. You feel that. Why are we so judgmental as a society? We all come from somewhere. Some people choose to be single parents and some people don’t. It’s nobody’s business. We’re all just trying to get by. I look at my single mom friends and I feel like it’s such an uphill battle that they can’t win. There’s always guilt or someone in the wings saying, “That wouldn’t have happened if you were around more.” That’s just not possible. I liked that part of everybody’s story. I was glad to be part of film that told all those stories without man-bashing.

Single Moms Club Wendi McClendon-Covey Nia Long

Movie Fanatic: How you do think your training in comedy helped you dramatically?

Wendi McLendon-Covey: I think it helps because I know when to just sit still. I learned that in improv. There’s a time when you can say more by saying nothing, especially in film. You can sway more by having the truth, just in your head. It all comes out.

Movie Fanatic: Being able to do film, from Bridesmaids to Single Moms Club, and television, with your hit The Goldbergs, what does that mean to you and what does each provide you creatively?

Wendi McLendon-Covey: I’m thrilled! I’ve been working my butt off for the last couple of years and I’ve got three or four more movies coming out this year. I’m really excited [laughs]. My work on The Goldbergs started one day after I finished the last movie I did. It’s worked out.

Get On Up Trailer: James Brown Story Ready to Get Down

$

The story of James Brown is one of the more fascinating tales in the history of popular music. That is why Movie Fanatic could not be more excited for the August 1 arrival of Get On Up. And who better to play Brown than the man who just played Jackie Robinson in 42, Chadwick Boseman.

Get On Up has released its first trailer, and if you’re not up and dancing and drawn in by the end, we would be greatly surprised!

What else should set the biopic up for greatness is who is behind it. The film is produced by Brian Grazer and Mick Jagger, and is the follow-up film for The Help helmer Tate Taylor.

Taylor is reunited with two of his The Help co-stars, Octavia Spencer (who won an Oscar for her role in that film) and Viola Davis. Dan Aykroyd also stars, as does Craig Robinson, Jill Scott and Tika Sumpter.

Get On Up follows Brown’s journey from impoverished kid to global sensation… and all the bumps and bruises in between. Brown was a trailblazer, a genre and barrier breaker and above all else… he could sing and dance and set the world on fire like no other.

Universal has also released a series of stills featuring an impressive looking Boseman, as well as this all-star cast.

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are set to hit the road once again in Ride Along 2. Universal has even let us know when!

Look for the sequel to Ride Along to arrive around the same time of year as when the original landed… January 15, 2016.

Tim Story will be back to direct, as Will Packer is set to produce yet again.

No word on the story, but we suspect these two will be police partners… and hilarity will most certainly ensue.

Need for Speed Review: Aaron Paul Career Gains Velocity

$

0

Need for Speed comes at its audience fast and furious, and for a video game made into a movie, it has a pretty solid story to boot.

Need for Speed Aaron Paul

Aaron Paul stars as Tobey Marshall, a talented street racer from a small rural New York state town. He and his friends not only run a garage where they work on other people’s cars, but they use their expertise to tweak their own raging machines that they take out on the weekends for street races that will blow viewers’ minds.

The way that director Scott Waugh has shot the film’s first races gives you an immediate indication of the free-of-CG, practical stunt cinematography one can expect from the entire feature. And as they say… we’re off to the races.

Dominic Cooper is Dino, and he’s an old friend/rival of Tobey’s. There’s some bad blood on two fronts. First, Dino stole Tobey’s girl, and secondly, he managed to get out of town and become a big name in racing and in the automotive industry.

But now, he’s back in Tobey’s town, and wants Tobey’s help restoring a Mustang with the promise of a big payday and perhaps, having some hurt feelings healed.

Marshall runs his father’s mechanic shop, and it’s not doing so well. He needs the money. So, what’s a guy to do? When the job is finished, Dino and Tobey agree to race and they bring Little Pete (Harrison Gilbertson) along as, well, he shadows Tobey everywhere.

As seen in that first Need for Speed trailer, the race does not go too well. Little Pete dies, Dino races off and Tobey is charged with manslaughter and sent away to prison for a couple of years. When Tobey gets out, he wants revenge. And what better revenge than to beat Dino at an underground race in California? The only problem is Tobey’s on probation, he can't fly on a plane. So, he embarks on a cross country race to the race that is as thrilling as can be.

Along for the ride is Imogen Poots. She works for a man who was willing to lend Tobey a car because he believes in him – but not enough to let him go alone. Poots and Paul have great chemistry and their banter only adds to the joy and lightens the mood a bit in between Waugh’s insanely choreographed and jaw-dropping stunts.

Cooper is a solid villain. He is equally slimy, confident and frankly, cowardly. But, this is the Paul coming out show. After his Breaking Bad finished its run, he should be ready for the big time and Need for Speed should be his ticket to that very promised land. He is approachable, yet heroic and very much reminds us of an early Steve McQueen, but he has something much more concrete to him as well.

What most impresses throughout the entire Need for Speed experience is the directing proficiency of Waugh. As a former stunt man and a son of a stunt man, he keenly knows how to meld action with drama. And because he wanted a throwback film to the car-centric flicks of the 1960s and 1970s, everything you see was truly captured with the actor in a car, driving like a madman.

Need for Speed Dominic Cooper

And that may be the greatest gift of all for fans of the highest selling racing game in history. Our Need for Speed review can report that Waugh puts you in the car. You feel the turns at breathtaking speeds. When a car crashes, the impact shakes the viewer to his or her core. For fans of racing games, racing itself and racing movies… there can be no higher praise.

Sure, the story is written to serve the stunts. But, don’t get us wrong, there is enough of a compelling story here to draw us in throughout. Need for Speed satisfies our craving for vicious velocity, but after it comes to a close… we need more speed.
