Muppets Most Wanted Exclusive: Bret McKenzie on Following Oscar Win

$

0

How does Bret McKenzie follow up winning an Oscar for his work on The Muppets for Muppets Most Wanted? Well, as the Academy Award winner said in our exclusive chat, you have to put that aside or it’s a killer to the creative process. As we stated in our Muppets Most Wanted review, the soundtrack has some of the catchiest Muppets songs in history!

Muppets Most Wanted Bret McKeznie James Bobin

McKenzie also talks the varied genres of songs that populate the film, teased in this Muppets Most Wanted trailer, from the old school Hollywood musical number to a disco track to a 1950’s sounding classic from Tina Fey. And does he adjust his songwriting if he knows he’s penning songs for people who don’t normally sing -- like Fey and Ty Burrell?

Movie Fanatic: After winning an Oscar for your work for The Muppets, when you sit down to write songs for the follow-up was there any nerves or did you feel any pressure?

Bret McKenzie: There’s a little bit of nerves and pressure because it was so fun winning an Oscar [laughs]. It was kind of cool to go to those fancy parties [laughs]. Obviously, that quickly gets put aside and the job takes over. It’s an unhelpful thing to think of and I think if you start creating things to try to win awards, it’s never going to work.

Movie Fanatic: The thing that struck me about the songs in this movie are that there are so many styles, from old school Hollywood song and dance to disco to very Broadway-type numbers…

Bret McKenzie: Because I was doing all the songs for this movie, last time I only did a few of the songs. This time, I was doing the whole film. I wanted to have a mixture so that the film had variation. In some ways, it’s like doing a show and when you write a set list, you can’t have all ballads. You can’t have all rocking numbers. You have to feel out the rhythm of the show.

Movie Fanatic: Starting off the movie with a big musical number like that with We’re Doing A Sequel...

Bret McKenzie: Classic musical technique! James (Bobin) did a great job with the Busby Berkeley musical number and in my mind that is one of the most successful moments in the movie. It’s a great number. We see all the Muppets… they nail it. It was James and Nick’s (Stoller, co-screenwriter) idea to start with a song about doing a sequel and I got the idea from a line in the script. My job was to write a song about doing sequels. I love that the Muppets could be self aware and keep the audience in on the joke. The pressure of a sequel just leaves the room once that song is through.

Muppets Most Wanted Cast Photo

Movie Fanatic: The first time you saw the number in all its glory with all the visuals, what did you think?

Bret McKenzie: When I first see it, it’s pretty rough. But, by the time it was done, I thought it was a big, successful show number -- on a budget [laughs]. I look back at that Busby Berkeley stuff and it is unbelievable what they were doing. There are like 100 people dancing, we had like 30. I really wish that those big Hollywood musical things were still part of the canon.

Movie Fanatic: Do you have a favorite?

Bret McKenzie: It’s animated, but I do like The Jungle Book. And I really like Mary Poppins. Those ones from the Sherman brothers are unbelievable. They really got the job of the movie songwriter. You write songs that work and move the story.

Movie Fanatic: When you’re writing songs for a movie like this, do you have to adjust that you’re writing songs for people who don’t normally sing… like Tina Fey or Ty Burrell?

Bret McKenzie: Because I produce the songs as well, I do… which is good. I can adjust the song. I might re-write if it doesn’t work for their voice. With Tina, we moved the key to try to make it sound best for her voice. To be honest, I just write for myself. I sing it for my voice and once I get in with the actor, then I adjust it.

Bret McKenzie Oscar

Movie Fanatic: Who are your songwriting influences? Given the vast spectrum of tracks you have on Muppets Most Wanted… they must be all over the place?

Bret McKenzie: The Sherman brothers, Irvin Berlin I looked at for this one. His lyrics are so playful. Then, I always fall back on Paul Williams and Harry Nilsson… we share a sense of melody.

Movie Fanatic: How has the songwriting process with James changed over the years? Or has it?

Bret McKenzie: We have a lot of trust. We work really well together. He sends me an idea and I hear them in my head. He pops by the studio and tells me what he liked about it and what it could sound like. He suggests ideas and I incorporate them. He was filming in London and I was working here, so now, he kind of leaves me to it!

Scarface Remake Coming Soon: Director Hired

$

Whether you want it or not, a remake of Scarface is coming soon. Until now, it had just been a theory over at Universal that another Scarface tale was in the works, but with the announcement today that director Pablo Larrain (No) signed to direct, this is a sure thing.

Scarface Al Pacino

You might be saying, “Sacrilege!” After all, many consider the Brian De Palma-directed/Al Pacino-starring film a classic that is not to be touched. But, their Scarface is actually a remake itself.

So, there is something about this story that is conducive to getting remade.

The original dealt with the rise of organized or “mob” crime elements in our society. Of course, the Scarface of Pacino fame dealt with the rise of drug cartels in this hemisphere and Pacino’s character was the embodiment of that.

The word is that this latest Scarface will feature a lead of Mexican descent and perhaps it will center on the Mexican crime epidemic that is spilling over on American border towns across the Southwest.

Also of note… someone who has done a terrific job of penning crime dramas, Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brosco), has been hired to write the screenplay.

Love the Pacino one? Watch Scarface online and don't miss our Scarface quotes!

13 Worthy Movie Remakes

It is hard to believe, but it was 30 years ago that The Breakfast Club first entertained us. Now, what's truly amazing is it was 30 years ago to the day that those different souls gathered for detention.

That's right! The date in the movie where the jock, the princess, the criminal, the athlete, the basket case and the brain first met is March 24, 1984.

By the end of that fateful day, they would all be embodying the words to the film's theme song, Don't You Forget About Me!

To celebrate three decades to the day since the Brat Pack became icons thanks to an instant classic from John Hughes, we present our favorite The Breakfast Club quotes. And why not celebrate this day in movie history, and watch The Breakfast Club online

Prometheus 2 To Shoot This Fall: Ridley Scott Returns to Direct

Fox announced last week that a “mysterious” Ridley Scott film would take the release date of March 4, 2016.

While Scott is putting the finishing touches on his Exodus, starring Christian Bale as Moses, his next project -- and the one taking that release date -- is the sequel to Prometheus.

Prometheus Alien

Prometheus 2 will start shooting this fall and will certainly feature the return of Noomi Rapace, but who else will return is largely a mystery. Given that the story, we've heard, will feature multiple "Davids" -- the android played by Michael Fassbender -- we're guessing he will return as well.

Hercules Poster: Dwayne Johnson Is Armed & Ready

Hot on the heels of the first Hercules stills, Paramount has released the premiere Hercules poster with its star -- Dwayne Johnson -- front and center!

Johnson portrays the legendary hero in a role it seems he was born to play. Now, if the story is as good as the casting, audiences are in for a treat on July 25 when it lands in theaters.

Word is the first Hercules trailer is due any day now, and that will be the real reveal as to the magic that director Brett Ratner (Tower Heist) has come up with.

And we also think that being that he is such a huge hero, there is more than enough room for two Hercules movies in the same calendar year, what with Kellan Lutz portraying him in The Legend of Hercules back in January.

Hercules Trailer: Man Cannot Escape His Fate

When we posted the first Hercules poster earlier this morning, we said we had a feeling that the first trailer was not far behind. Little did we know that it would arrive within minutes!

So, the first Hercules trailer is here and now we have our first visuals to the Dwayne Johnson as the warrior hero tale.

It’s got a pretty epic feel and the teaser is mostly narrated by someone inquiring as to what kind of man Johnson’s character is, to which at the end he utters, “I. Am. Hercules!”

Will that line go down with famous Batman quotes like “I. Am. Batman!” or the one heard in the most recent The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer where Andrew Garfield utters, “I. Am. Spider-Man?”

Time will tell, that is for sure.

But, for now… we’d say Johnson pulls off the line pretty well. Check out the trailer for Hercules (due July 25) and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Also, check out the first Hercules stills and all the Johnson photos he posted on his Twitter account from the making of this epic in the following slideshow!

Edge of Tomorrow Trailer: This Is Not The End

The latest Edge of Tomorrow trailer is here and we have to say, it impresses us much more than the first one. Tom Cruise plays a futuristic soldier who heads into battle knowing that it will fail.

See, he knows this because he’s lived that fight over and over and it always ends the same way: He dies and wakes up ready to repeat the day.

If you think it sounds like Groundhog Day meets War of the Worlds, you're not far off!

In Edge of Tomorrow, Cruise's curse has the chance to be broken when he meets Emily Blunt’s soldier. She can train him so that, eventually, when they head into that fateful battle, Cruise knows what to do and not only avoids his own death, but holds the key to victory for his troupe.

Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) directs the thriller that lands in theaters June 6. Cruise and Blunt are joined in the cast by Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson and Noah Taylor.

Watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith online and see why Liman is the perfect helmer to direct Cruise and Blunt in this action flick.

Hollywood loves to destroy things, there is no question. The disaster movie has become a stalwart of every movie season.

It truly became its own sub-genre of action-thriller in the 1970s and studios have not shied away from it since.

They can take real life disasters (watch Titanic online and see what we're talking about) or fictional ones (watch Armageddon online) and one thing becomes clear: Audiences have a knack for taking shelter in the fact that what they're witnessing on screen is not happening to them!

Click through and check out our 15 disaster movies that are the best at destroying things.

The Mayans' prediction may not have come true, but that doesn't mean we cannot enjoy John Cusack trying to survive the End of Days in a film from the destruction epic maestro, Roland Emmerich.

Dante's Peak

8. Dante's Peak

Pierce Brosnan stars as a volcanoligist who happens to be on the site of a huge volcano that no one believes is going to go off. Guess what? It does, and he and Linda Hamilton do their best to survive. Dante's Peak is a pretty solid thrill ride.

Earthquake

9. Earthquake

For those of us who live in LA, Earthquake hits hard -- no pun intended. Charlton Heston stars in another 1970s all-star cast disaster movie that imagines Angelinos' worst fear. Best scene: The Capital Records building taking a massive hit.

Gravity

10. Gravity

Disaster can happen in space, and boy, does it ever in Gravity. What Sandra Bullock goes through is nothing short of the embodiment of human willpower. Not only is it technically a perfect movie, emotionally it packs one sensational punch.

The Impossible

11. The Impossible

The Impossible tells the story of one family's struggle to survive after the Thailand tsunami devastated that country's beaches. It is dramatic. It is powerful and features incredible performances from its leads (Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts) and its child actors. It is simply stunning and a powerful tribute to the human will to survive.

Deep Impact

12. Deep Impact

When Morgan Freeman is the president and he tells us that an asteroid is coming, we don't know whether to be calm from his dulcet tones, or completely freak out! Deep Impact was a better asteroid movie than that other one that arrived that same year, but both have their merits in the disaster movie genre.

Melancholia

13. Melancholia

Melancholia is one trippy trip. And to think that it stars Kirsten Dunst as a woman facing the end of the world, and it treats that end of days as a synonym for depression. In a word: Wild!

Titanic

14. Titanic

One of the most tragic of real life disasters comes to life as an Oscar-winning love story, courtesy of James Cameron. The way he melds Jack and Rose's love story with the sinking of the "unsinkable" ship is astounding.

Airport

15. Airport

Airport arrived in 1970 and ushered in a prolific era of disaster movies. This one's a joy, simply for watching Dean Martin as a pilot of a doomed airliner!

Terminator Genesis: Arnold Schwarzenegger Says His Character “Ages”

Some may be wondering how Arnold Schwarzenegger can return to his cyborg self with the upcoming Terminator Genesis that has cast Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese. As he has clearly aged in real life, how can the action hero (recently seen in our Sabotage exclusive trailer) play someone who is a machine that doesn’t age?

Pic of a Terminator

"The way that the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton,” Schwarzenegger told MTV.

“But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh -- maybe not as fast -- but it definitely ages."

Schwarzenegger also teased a bit with what to expect from the fifth Terminator film, other than what he said previously about it “feeling like Terminator 2.”

"Terminator deals a lot with time travel, so there will be a younger T-800, and then [there is] what that model does later on when it gets reprogrammed, and who gets a hold of him,” Schwarzenegger said excitedly.

“So it will be all kinds of interesting twists in the movie."

Head back and see how it all started and watch The Terminator online.

Terminator Genesis is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2015 and will be helmed by Thor: The Dark World’s Alan Taylor.

The Wolf of Wall Street DVD Review: Martin Scorsese Sizzler

The Wolf of Wall Street is the fifth collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio. According to our theatrical The Wolf of Wall Street review, it is by far their best work together. And now, The Wolf of Wall Street is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

The Wolf of Wall Street Blu-Ray

As teased in the powerful The Wolf of Wall Street trailerthe film follows DiCaprio as the real life Wall Street swindler Jordan Belfort. Over years and years, Belfort managed to milk hundreds of millions of dollars from his investors and built a stock company that made dozens of his cohorts rich beyond their wildest dreams as well.

Oh, and along the way, he and his co-workers partied like rock stars. Actually scratch that… rock stars wish they went as hard as Belfort and his cronies.

Jonah Hill stars as Belfort’s friend and business colleague, and the comedic actor turns in the performance of his career. It is astounding to watch DiCaprio and Hill together – they are like dueling hurricanes.

And Scorsese has managed to top himself, which is uncanny if you think about it. His fast editing and score, coupled with a script by Terence Winter, produces a film that is nothing short of a miracle.

Sure, it may offend some people. There are films that showcase excess and then there is The Wolf for Wall Street. But, this is how Belfort lived. This is also something that is not glamorized in the film. Sure, reading The Wolf of Wall Street quotes, one can think that it celebrates the lifestyle. But in fact, it is a comedy of the highest cerebral order and it comes at the audience at 150 miles per hour. If anything, it is not a flattering portrayal -- it paints greed as definitely not good.

When it comes to extras, there is really only one, and it is the only one we need.

The Wolf of Wall Street Leonardo DiCaprio Dancing

The Wolf Pack is an outstanding documentary that looks at the making of The Wolf of Wall Street. Scorsese, DiCaprio, Hill, Margot Robbie (who plays Belfort’s long suffering wife) and other cast and crew add their two cents on the making of the film.

The featurette truly captures the spirit of the film while still educating the viewer to the mastery that is Scorsese and his modern muse -- DiCaprio.

By the time The Wolf Pack has finished, you might be compelled to press play again on the movie and witness Scorsese’s latest Oscar-nominated work with a fresh set of eyes. The insight his cast and crew, and the master himself, provide make The Wolf of Wall Street a movie experience to treasure.

Sony has released our best look yet at Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin!

We were first teased with a glimpse at DeHaan's evil alter-ego (his other half is Harry Osborn) in that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 triptych poster and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 international trailer -- and boy, have we come a long way since!

Now, they're just putting him out there with no tease. And he's just, well, ugly! And that is a good thing. And can we say, we like this incarnation of the Green Goblin more than the design for the villain that Willem Dafoe played in Spider-Man.

Peter and Gwen are graduating high school and heading into the "real' world. Why, Webb explains: "There's a thematic resonance with people moving on, with graduation, which felt really potent to us. The graduation speech was a way to introduce the universe and the themes of the movie in an interesting way. That just felt right."

Comedy Dream Team Helped Write Jokes!

3. Comedy Dream Team Helped Write Jokes!

Spider-Man has always been adored because of his humor. Webb told us that is even more present in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. "We did something that sometimes big comedy movies do, which is you get a roundtable of comedians and you just have them spit jokes out. You can't really tell who's in it! But these amazing comedians, many of them are comic book fans, came in and helped us with coming up with the one-liners and quips that are part of Spider-Man's universe."

Will Indiana Jones Continue Without Harrison Ford?

Just a few months ago, Harrison Ford said Indiana Jones was a character he wouldn’t mind revisiting for a fifth time. But, will he even get the chance?

Indiana Jones Whip

News has arrived today that the team behind the Indiana Jones franchise may go the route that James Bond has and cast a different actor in the role and move it forward without an origins story -- just a new face.

Ever since Ford uttered those Raiders of the Lost Ark quotes, he has been our guy. But we're listening...

One rumor has Bradley Cooper being eyed to take over the Fedora hat and whip from the archeologist-adventurer. Cooper actually is not a bad choice if someone has to replace Ford, but does that still make it a good idea?

You might recall that a little studio named Disney bought Lucasfilm recently. And it was not only the Star Wars franchise that the Mouse House inherited, but also another Lucasfilm property that is Indiana Jones. They have clearly been thinking about what to do with this series that has got a massive following, is still hugely popular and could easily keep going.

But, what about Ford? Sure, he’s getting up there… but we still think there is a story out there that could work for an Indiana Jones of later years. And it wouldn’t even have to be one that included Shia LaBeouf as his son.

Then again, Sean Connery was so identifiable as James Bond, it must have seemed inconceivable to move on without him. Yet, here we are all these years and Bonds later and we’re just fine with it. In fact, Daniel Craig is one of our favorite James Bonds.

So, the thought is this: Is Indiana Jones like James Bond? Can you picture Bradley Cooper in the role? Should Harrison Ford get another film? Wow, that’s a lot of questions.

Take our poll questions below and let us know and to help remind you of Ford’s greatness in the role, watch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom online!

Should Indiana Jones continue without Harrison Ford?

Can you see Bradley Cooper as Indiana Jones?

Beyond that ridiculously awesome 22 Jump Street red band trailer, things have been kind of quiet in the sequel to the film that gave us those unforgettable 21 Jump Street quotes.

But we’ve got a fresh still today featuring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in 22 Jump Street! We know the story -- the guys are back undercover, but this time -- they’re heading to college to bust a drug ring.

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller exclusively told us things will get even crazier this time out.

Regardless of how nuts our favorite undercover cops get, one thing is certain to amaze us yet again: The comic chemistry between Hill and Tatum. Before they were cast, who would have thought that these two would make our list of 17 movie dream teams?!

13 Worst Remakes: Leave Classic Films Alone!

$

It is kind of hard to ignore that Hollywood has gone bananas for remakes. And usually the effort ends with a shrug of the shoulders from audiences.

Yet, they keep making them!

We present 13 of the worst movie remakes in recent memory that hopefully will remind studio executives to cease and desist this madcap trend.

For example, Paul Rudd and Steve Carell can make movie magic with their witty Anchorman quotes. Just watch Anchorman online and that is immediately clear.

Tim Burton and Mark Wahlberg... we love you!

But maybe you should have stayed away from Planet of the Apes. Or, watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes online and see how to properly handle a classic property.

Click through and see our 13 worst remake that Hollywood should have left alone.

13 Worst Movie Remakes
Somethings are better left alone. Or, scratch that. The new Godzilla looks amazing. Godzilla is something that could be remade. Just maybe not by the team behind Independence Day. And Matthew Broderick, we love ya, but you are no action movie star to anchor a flick.

Planet of the Apes

2. Planet of the Apes

We love Tim Burton. We adore Mark Wahlberg. But, we also love Planet of the Apes and Burton's film is a poor excuse for a remake... or a film for that matter.

The Wolfman

3. The Wolfman

Monster movies, particularly old school ones, are actually a ripe landscape for remakes. But The Wolfman with Benecio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins was just terrible.

Arthur

4. Arthur

There are certain films that just should not be touched. The Dudley Moore star making original of Arthur is one that should have been left alone. Again, we love Russell Brand, and the idea of changing the gender of his butler to a woman to get Helen Mirren is genius. But overall, this is one poor film.

Get Carter

5. Get Carter

Sylvester Stallone, you are no Michael Caine. What more needs to be said?!

Guess Who

6. Guess Who

Why on Earth would anyone try to remake a film that was not only a classic, but one that helped mark a societal change in our attitudes towards race? And to make it a slapstick comedy with Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher, well that is just a crime.

Straw Dogs

7. Straw Dogs

The original Straw Dogs was dark, biting and made us think twice about a lot of things. This is another that has to land in the category of: Why, just why? James Marsden is a movie star waiting for a great movie, and unfortunately Straw Dogs was far from it.

The Pink Panther

8. The Pink Panther

Steve Martin is a supreme talent. But even he could not even play in the league that is Peter Sellers.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

9. The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still is not only a sci-fi classic that helped define the genre in the 1950s, it was also a cultural statement about our world at the time. What this Keanu Reeves remake was, we're just not sure.

Piranha 3D

10. Piranha 3D

Piranha arrived in the late 1970s as a response to Jaws, hoping to cash in on some of that "afraid of the water" feelings that audiences had. What's the excuse for this 3D horrific mess?

Dinner for Schmucks

11. Dinner for Schmucks

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd co-starring together have made magic... just check out Anchorman and Anchorman 2. But, redoing a French comedy classic was just the wrong move on so many levels.

Mr. Deeds

12. Mr. Deeds

It's almost laughable to think that Adam Sandler could remake a Frank Capra comedy starring Gary Cooper. That thought is funny, this movie is not.

Clash of the Titans

13. Clash of the Titans

Sure, the original Clash of the Titans was kind of cheesy. But, it is a cheesy classic. The Clash of the Titans with Sam Worthington, we're not sure what they were trying to do with this one... other than attempt to destroy the audience goodwill for 3D that Avatar started!

Walking with Dinosaurs DVD Review: Now That’s Old School!

$
0
0

Walking with Dinosaurs first stormed into theaters in dynamic 3D and on IMAX and was a true visual treat. Now that Walking with Dinosaurs is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, the question has to be asked: Does it hold up?

Walking with Dinosaurs DVD

The answer is yes. Yes, it does. Whether on a small(er) screen or large one, the story of Walking with Dinosaurs is enough to keep kids interested. Even more than that, don’t be surprised if they start to become obsessed with the extinct former earth walkers when the final credits roll.

And what’s also a thrill for parents, is whether on the big screen or your television, the special effects and visuals of Walking with Dinosaurs is a true joy -- as we explore further in our theatrical Walking with Dinosaurs review.

As seen in the above teaser, Walking with Dinosaurs is a mostly animated (there’s a live action intro) feature about a small dinosaur who through a series of extraordinary events, rises up to be the leader of his herd. It is just one of many lessons contained in the film that is another thing parents will treasure.

But, when it comes to home video releases that are essentially geared towards children, the bonus features are truly what sets it apart. And as we mentioned prior, the thing about Walking with Dinosaurs is it is sure to have the little ones asking questions. And the extras on this release should nicely start the process of providing informed and entertaining answers.

The go-to for when the film’s credits roll has to be Ultimate Dino Guide. The film itself introduces all these species of dinosaurs as their characters are introduced. But the bonus feature Ultimate Dino Guide takes it a step further. It is a highly visual, extremely enlightening feature that should fan the fires of those newly curious and previously intrigued dinosaur fans.

Walking with Dinosaurs 3D Still

The Interactive Map feature is also nice as it provides a geographical background to not only the film, but to where dinosaurs landed on the world stage. And the Match the Call game is fantastic fun -- we’re betting on the kids here in a battle of old versus young to determine which sound emanates from which dinosaur!

And in that vein, the Brainosaur Trivia Track is another facet that challenges the brain and can be one more way for kids to show off their dino knowledge.

We are hoping parents dive into this film, and we even have it for you right now... watch Walking with Dinosaurs online
