The Raid 2 Exclusive: Gareth Evans on Those Mind-Blowing Stunts

$

The Raid 2 is something to behold in that director Gareth Evans has truly taken the action movie genre and practically put it on steroids, which is teased in this The Raid 2 trailer and clip!

We caught up with the man behind the film, Evans, and his star Iko Uwais for a video exclusive interview to explore -- frankly -- how on earth he did what he did!

Evans first gained our notice when he released The Raid: Redemption, which landed near the top of our list of 19 action movies that changed everything.

The story follows an Indonesian undercover policeman who infiltrates a crime syndicate in hopes of bringing them down. And we are not exaggerating here: It is literally one man against a whole city's worth of criminals!

Of all the action scenes that Evans and Uwais had to shoot, we ask them which was the most difficult. Their answers and more are below in our exclusive video Q&A.

Magic Mike XXL: Stripper Sequel Coming!

When we first heard about Magic Mike and how it’s loosely based on the true story of star Channing Tatum’s brief stint as a male stripper, one could never have imagined that the film would ever be getting a sequel. But after its enormous success, that is indeed what is happening and we even have a director that has been hired in Greg Jacobs.

Magic Mike: Channing Tatum

Steven Soderbergh helmed the first one that also starred Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer. It debuted to massive success, something we could tell was going to happen from that first Magic Mike Channing Tatum photo!

Tatum has said a Magic Mike sequel would happen and now it is official. In fact, the sequel will be called Magic Mike XXL. There’s a joke there, we’re sure of it!

No release date has been set yet, but while we wait for it, remind yourself of what was so magical about the film and watch Magic Mike online. And don't worry, word is the entire cast is set for a return.

Noah Proves Bible Can Be Blockbuster: Weekend Box Office Report

Noah triumphed over more than just that civilization ruining flood and landed atop the weekend box office. The Russell Crowe starring epic from Darren Aronofsky weathered the competition and scored an impressive $44 million opening.

Russell Crowe Stars as Noah

Last week’s top film, Divergent, kept earning money at an impressive rate and is knocking on the hundred million dollar mark in only two weeks of release. The film with great Divergent quotes saw its second week totals brought the young adult novel to screen effort’s total take at $95.3 million.

Third place belonged to our favorite felt film stars, the Muppets, and their effort Muppets Most Wanted. The sequel (check out the first film and watch The Muppets online) banked another $11.4 million to bring its two-week total to $33.2 million.

Fourth place belonged to another former number one film, Mr. Peabody & Sherman. It too is right below the coveted hundred million dollar mark. Its weekend sales totaled $9.5 million bringing its gross to $94.9 million.

Fifth place featured the film that is still surprising box office analysts, God’s Not Dead. It earned another $9 million, taking its two-week total to $22 million.

The other wide release that experts had their eye on was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage. Its first week total of $5.3 million found it in a disappointing seventh place.

Next week finds the “arrival” of the first true expected blockbuster of the warmer season, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We’re guessing Noah’s run at number one will end at one week.

Box office top 10:

1. Noah, $44 million
2. Divergent, $26.5 million
3. Muppets Most Wanted, $11.4 million
4. Mr. Peabody & Sherman, $9.5 million
5. God’s Not Dead, $9 million
6. The Grand Budapest Hotel, $8.8 million
7. Sabotage, $5.3 million
8. Need for Speed, $4.34 million
9. 300: Rise of an Empire, $4.3 million
10. Non-Stop, $4 million

For fans of Harry Potter, the news that J.K. Rowling was developing a movie spin-off that would be based in the Potter magical world was the best news heard all year.

J.K. Rowling Picture

Now, that happiness factor should go through the roof as Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara told The New York Times that that spin-off will be a trilogy!

Warner’s is adapting Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a 2001 book billed as one of Harry Potter’s textbooks and firmly within the world of Mr. Potter, Hermione and Ron.

“Three mega-movies are planned,” Tsujihara said.

“The main character will be a 'magizoologist' named Newt Scamander. The stories, neither prequels or sequels, will start in New York about seven decades before the arrival of Mr. Potter and his pals."

Excited enough? Movie Fanatic might need a defibrillator!

Let's go back to the beginning in the meantime and watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone online.

We knew that Frozen would top The Lion King as the highest grossing animated movie of all time --- it was just a question of when. Well, that time is now. Over the weekend, as Noah won the box office, something much bigger and more historic happened -- Frozen hit the $1,072.4 billion worldwide mark and broke that animated movie record.

Frozen Olaf the Snowman

Frozen also cracked the coveted list of top 10 highest grossing films of all time and became Walt Disney Studios’ seventh billion-dollar release in its history. On all fronts -- that’s some heady company for the movie that first teased us with that amazing Frozen Olaf trailer!

The Kristen Bell-Idina Menzel animated classic also is not just piling up money as it scored the honor of Best Animated Feature and Best Original song for Let it Go at this year’s Academy Awards.

What else is interesting to note, Frozen stayed on the top 10 box office charts for 16 straight weeks and that is the longest run for any film since 2002!

Watch Frozen online and be sure to check out our favorite Frozen quotes below.

And it’s also easy to see why it’s one of our 9 animated movies that need a sequel!

Neighbors TV Spots: Are We Even Now?

The latest pair of TV spots for the crazy looking comedy Neighbors has landed and they both paint a similar picture of a fraternity wronged and those who wronged them paying the price.

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are married with a baby, and to their horror, their new neighbors move in -- and it's a fraternity!

The first night goes pretty well as the couple hang with the boys and enjoy the festivities. We even love Rogen and Efron discussing who their favorite Batman is. Both Dark Knights are featured in our best Batman quotes!

The second TV spot hints at the similar themes of them both, and we sense Rogen's character will reach his tipping point and that's when the real humor will kick in.

See, Rogen's character calls the cops on his neighbors. Then, Efron and his frat buddies decide to get even, to which Rogen repeatedly asks, "Are we even now?" Clearly, they are not!

Neighbors opens in theaters everywhere May 9, and for the full scope of the hilarity, check out the full Neighbors trailer.

Sex Tape Red Band Trailer: Nobody Understands the Cloud!

The red band trailer for Sex Tape has arrived and it’s every bit worthy of that “red” title as it can be.

Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz star as a married couple who decide to spice up their love life by going through all the positions in the Joy of Sex book, and filming the entire thing. As Diaz asks Segel to erase it, he accidently uploads it to his cloud and it synchs with all the iPads they gave out as gifts.

Now the couple are in a comic mad dash to get back all those iPads, or at least die trying!

Sex Tape reunites Diaz and Segel from Bad Teacher, with their director from that film, Jake Kasdan. It also features Ellie Kemper (Bridesmaids), Rob Corddry and Rob Lowe.

Look for it July 25, and if you haven’t seen them in action prior, be sure to watch Bad Teacher online.

Anchorman 2 To Release “No Joke” Cut: “Serious Storytelling”

Paramount and Gary Sanchez Productions announced today that there will be an all-new "no joke" cut of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues that will be available exclusively on digital release formats.

The Anchorman 2 DVD arrives today (our review will publish later today!) and in an effort to prove that the Anchorman story works without the humor, Andy McKay and producer Judd Apatow will unveil a never-before-seen dramatic cut of their hit film.

“Comedies often fail to get the consideration they deserve because laughter masks the serious storytelling going on beneath the surface,” Apatow said. “This new cut illustrates that Anchorman 2 can hold its weight against any drama.”

Check out the teaser clip of this new dramatic cut:

McKay further explains why this release is so important.

“People know that Will and I do many joke options for our movies, but I think what gets lost is the fact that underneath the laughs there's a very powerful drama at work. Movies like Sophie's Choice, Ordinary People and Breaking the Waves are the movies that inspire Will and me,” McKay added.

“I'm just glad, with the no joke cut, audiences can finally appreciate the rawness and drama of Anchorman 2.”

Top Gun 2 Settles on its Plot: Are "Pilots Obsolete?”

$

Top Gun 2 has become a priority for producer Jerry Bruckheimer of late. Perhaps it truly gained momentum after the passing of Top Gun director Tony Scott, and Bruckheimer wants to further the late helmer’s memory... Who knows, but fans seem to be open to the idea of Tom Cruise getting back into the flight suit.

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis in Top Gun

But, the question is… how and why?

While promoting his book When Lightning Strikes: Four Decades of Filmmaking, Bruckheimer talked to the Huffington Post and let it be known that he and the creative team behind Top Gun 2 have settled on a plot that not only can be action packed, but simultaneously timely as well.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete,” Bruckheimer said.

“They’re here to stay."

Now, it will be hard to follow up those iconic Top Gun quotes, we admit. And with Cruise busy with the upcoming Edge of Tomorrow, the fifth Mission Impossible film and a potential Jack Reacher sequel on the horizon, we’re not sure how this fits into his schedule. But, fans can dream, no?

Watch Top Gun online and recall why after decades we’re still even interested in a sequel. It’s classic!

One thing on Top Gun 2, they have to get Kenny Loggins for the soundtrack!

The Wolf of Wall Street Exclusive: Inside Martin Scorsese’s Creative Genius

With The Wolf of Wall Street landing on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download, Movie Fanatic had the chance to sit down with a longtime Martin Scorsese collaborator, his Oscar-winning editor, Thelma Schoonmaker.

The Wolf of Wall Street Blu-Ray

Schoonmaker first worked with Martin Scorsese on 1970’s Street Scenes documentary.

She has won three Oscars working with Scorsese -- for The Departed, The Aviator and Raging Bull -- and has been nominated a total of seven times! No one knows the master filmmaker’s cinematic ways better than Schoonmaker.

She’s been there with Scorsese through his creation of The King of Comedy, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence, Casino, Kundun, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, Hugo and now The Wolf of Wall Street. “He excites you and that’s why he’s such a great teacher because he doesn’t talk down to you,” Schoonmaker told us exclusively.

“He’s got such passion and you feel such excitement when you’re working with him that you’re working together towards a tremendous goal and there’s nothing better than that.”

We talk what sets Scorsese apart from every other filmmaker in history, the unique power that The Wolf of Wall Street has and what separates it from the rest of their film work and lastly, the “accident” that was how the two creative geniuses even met.

Martin Scorsese Thelma Schoomaker Picture

Movie Fanatic: We all know how gifted Martin Scorsese is as a storyteller, how is he as a collaborator?

Thelma Schoonmaker: The actors would tell you this too, he has such a strong vision that you feel that you can relax that there’s someone at the helm of the ship -- he is a wonderful collaborator. He has an idea about the camera work that is different for each film. When he’s shooting, he’s thinking like an editor all the time. Even though he has that strong vision, he’s open to suggestions and you hear that over and over again. And you see it, particularly, in The Wolf of Wall Street with the improvisation. Yet, at the same time, he has such high standards, that he is able to blend those two things together in the most unique of ways. It’s not easy to do.

Movie Fanatic: The Wolf of Wall Street is the most unique of Martin Scorsese films. What struck you the most putting together this film?

Thelma Schoonmaker: It was the improv. We hadn’t done that in a long time and it was so much fun. I was laughing my head off at the dailies when they’d come in, and then when I was editing with Marty we’d be laughing so hard. That was different. Also, the structure was different on this one. He had very unique ideas on how to begin the movie -- for example, each shot is carefully thought out. But, then we come to that brilliant Matthew McConaughey improvisation at the lunch where he’s teaching Leo what Wall Street is about (seen in this The Wolf of Wall Street trailer). That’s a five minute scene [laughs]! We didn’t expect that to be so heavily improvised and so funny. Suddenly you come to this big chunk of a scene and you don’t want to let go of it because it’s so good. It made for a rather strange start and stop structure to the movie. For people who go with the movie, they tell me it just goes like a shot. You never knew what was coming next. It was so fertile.

Movie Fanatic: Leo has been growing as an actor over the years and each successive film he’s made with Marty, the five, he grows and grows. But this, in our The Wolf of Wall Street review, I called it a hurricane. What did you notice putting the film together that was so special about Leo’s performance?

Leonardo DiCaprio Stars in The Wolf of Wall Street

Thelma Schoonmaker: He busted through with this one. Marty loves the fact that Leo is fearless and will experiment. They admire each other so much. He was ready to cut loose, you can feel it. It was Leo’s project. He’s the one who brought it to Marty. He’s been trying to get it made for seven years, so he’d been thinking about it. Those amazing speeches he gives [laughs], you’re right… it’s a hurricane! It’s a tour de force performance.

Movie Fanatic: As we close, let’s go back to the beginning. How did you first hook up with Marty?

Thelma Schoonmaker: It was all a big accident. I wanted to be a diplomat because I was born and grew up abroad. When I came back to the States to go to college, I really missed the rest of the world. I went to the State Department and passed all the exams. But, in the stress interview at the end, they said to me that I was way too liberal. They told me I’d be unhappy there. I saw an ad for an editor who wanted to train an editor as an assistant and I’d always loved movies. I went, and he trained me and he was just butchering films for late night TV and I just couldn’t stand it. So, I went to NYU for just one course, all I could afford. And there was Martin Scorsese. Someone had cut his negative wrong and I was the only one who knew how to fix it. It was all a big accident! Thank God! I love working with him every day. He has a passion and it’s infectious. And there’s no better way to live than with passion.

Wicked Movie Gets Closer: Coming Sooner Than Later

For fans of the highly successful, Tony Award-winning Wicked, the question of when they can see their favorite musical is now not an “if,” but a when.

Wicked Logo

Forward movement seems to be happening -- according to the musical’s music man, Stephen Schwartz. “We're starting to do some work on it. We've actually started gearing up on it a little bit,” Schwartz told Vulture.

“I don't know exactly how many years away it is."

Based in the world of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, the musical takes a look at the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely journey, from the point of view of Elphaba herself.

The big question seems to be what stays from the stage production and what has to be altered for the vastness of the movie screen.

“What are we going to change? What are we going to keep? How do you use a whole new language and medium to tell the story? We can really look at it again and say, ‘Oh, we can do this, and we’ve always wanted to do that and we couldn’t onstage, but we can in a movie,’” Schwartz said. “We’re actually having a blast.”

We don’t care what they have to do to get Wicked to the big screen. But, might we suggest they keep the star the same from the original 2003 production that featured the actress with the best Frozen quotes, Idina Menzel

If the movie is half as good as the musical, audiences are in for a treat. Be sure to click through our 9 noteworthy movie musical moments! And why not go back to the beginning and watch The Wizard of Oz online and see why this story has resonated for decades.

Marvel Studios is doing a bang up job of introducing us to their latest band of superheroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Further proof of that arrived today with a series of solo pictures of each of the Guardians, from Chris Pratt's Star Lord to our favorite warrior raccoon, Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper).

Even that Guardians of the Galaxy trailer did an outstanding job of setting the landscape for the otherworldly heroes in their first big screen adventure.

If we think back to meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy cast at Comic-Con last year, one has to be supremely impressed how it appears the Midas touch of Marvel will continue. They should be the model for how a studio gets a franchise going!

Heck, watch Iron Man online and recall how the movie going audience as a whole didn't even know who Tony Stark was, and now -- we all do!

Click through and check out our five new stills of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast.

Godzilla TV Trailer: He Cannot Be Stopped

The first TV trailer for Godzilla has arrived and one thing becomes immediately clear: This is one monster who "can't be stopped." The fact that that is also the name of the TV trailer makes our observation on the obvious side!

From that first Godzilla trailer, we knew that this would be wildly different than the late 1990s one that starred Matthew Broderick and largely missed the mark.

Godzilla 2014 stars Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor Johnson (the latter two reunite in Avengers: Age of Ultron!). And what makes it so special is it doesn't ignore the Japanese beginnings of one of the movies' greatest monsters. It embraces it with both arms and even gives us an origins to the massive movie monster and why he is, frankly, so pissed off!

Godzilla lands in theaters May 13 and is one of our must-see movies of 2014!

Fast and Furious 7 Resumes Production: James Wan Posts Photo

After taking months off since the tragic Paul Walker death, Fast and Furious 7 is back shooting full-time.

Director James Wan took to his Instagram account to post a photo to the millions of Fast and Furious fans eager for the series to continue. The photo below has us thinking what directors call out to start shooting a scene, and it also simultaneously fits the description of the franchise as a whole, “Action!”

Fast and Furious 7 Calls Action

Since Walker’s tragic death in November, the Fast and Furious 7 production has been shut down.

Various thoughts emerged about how to handle Walker’s character. Some thought for a while that filmmakers would “retire Brian O’Connor,” while others had Paul Walker’s brother stepping in to shoot scenes in his place.

Now we know that between four body doubles and CGI utilizing what Walker had already shot, that his character will complete this movie. Where we go from there, is still to be decided.

But, the important thing is that the film series that Walker loved is continuing. It's easy to feel how much he will be missed when we watch Fast and Furious 6 online

Captain America The Winter Soldier: Chris Evans on Cap Suit Getting "Tighter"

When Captain America: The First Avenger arrived in 2011, star Chris Evans said that he almost did not take the role. He, perhaps, was afraid of typecasting or that being Captain America would limit his career and creative dreams. Of course, he did take the role and when he spoke to Movie Fanatic recently, he admitted that he is thrilled he did not make a huge error by passing on the role of a lifetime, one he continues in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Chris Evans is Captain Ameirca in The Winter Soldier

“Had I not done the movies, it would’ve been the biggest mistake of my life. It really would’ve been the biggest regret to date and there are plenty,” Evans said.

In fact, Evans has gone on to make a romantic comedy with Anna Faris (What’s Your Number?), a crime thriller with Michael Shannon (The Iceman) and had an incredibly powerful turn as a drug-addled lawyer in Puncture.

“It’s changed everything for me. I mean not just what it’s enabled me to do outside of these movies, but it’s so comforting knowing that you’re making good movies,” Evans said.

“It would be a nightmare to be trapped in this contract and be making films that you’re not proud of, but Marvel has the Midas touch. So every time you suit up, you know that you’re making something of quality. It’s rewarding on every level, so thank God I had the right people in my life pushing me to make the right decision.”

One of the best parts of the entire film is the camaraderie between Captain America and new addition Anthony Mackie as the Falcon -- teased in this Captain America: The Winter Soldier trailer.  Evans admitted that he has known Mackie for years, and that comfort level is evident on every frame of film.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Anthony Mackie Chris Evans

“I’ve known Anthony for a while now. When I first met Anthony, it actually wasn’t on a movie set. We got along very well. We’re very similar people. This is our third movie together,” Evans said.

“So it was very easy having just a repartee with him off set and I think that translates on set. And the guy is life, he’s energy. He just brings a certain type of spark that you need on film and you need off as well.”

Also new to the Marvel world -- and something that speaks volumes as to how far comic book movies have come -- is legend Robert Redford, who plays a S.H.I.E.L.D. higher-up.

“He’s amazing. It was pretty intimidating that day because he is a living legend, but it’s always such a treat when someone you look up to that much lives up to the expectation,” Evans said. “I mean, he very easily could’ve come on set and hijacked the film, not just as an actor, but given his past as a director and his experience. He very easily could’ve taken over. He showed up with the utmost professionalism. He knew his lines. I think the first day we filmed, we shot until one in the morning and he stuck around for my off camera stuff. I mean it was like it was his first movie. So he really is such an example of what it is to be great.”

Although Black Widow is in the mix with Cap (what about that Black Widow solo movie?), following up their great chemistry in The Avengers, Evans cautions, don’t expect any romantic sparks. “No, I don’t think that’s the dynamic of Cap and Black Widow,” he said, despite what many audience members would like!

Captain America and Black Widow

This is Evans’ third turn in the Captain America suit and we wondered how things have evolved. “It always feels like it gets tighter. It’s like I thought it was supposed to get more comfortable. I feel like this got worse. I’m not joking. That really happens,” Evans said with an honest to goodness straight face!

“It’s exciting. Again, a lot of it has to do with the fact that you know you’re making good movies. If you were disappointed with the previous film, it’s going to be hard to mentally prepare yourself for living in that thing for four or five months. But since Marvel just can’t stop making quality movies, it’s exciting, humbling and it’s an honor to jump back into it -- no matter how uncomfortable it is.”
