Star Wars Episode VII: Harrison Ford to Play a “Gigantic” Role

Yesterday we reported that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were all in London and that, of course, is where J.J. Abrams is filming Star Wars: Episode VII. So, you can probably infer that the trio from the original Star Wars films is there to work on Episode VII. Now, Deadline is reporting something that should be like a combination of the best birthday present ever with news you’ve scored that promotion at work -- and so much more.

Ford’s role as Han Solo is going to be “gigantic.”

Star Wars Han Solo Blaster

Honestly, we wondered. Ford had long said that Solo was a character that didn’t have much to offer and that it was unlikely he would ever return to it. Ford even recently stated that he was more likely to don the Indiana Jones Fedora hat again before picking up Solo’s blaster.

But, there is something in the script by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan that has called to him. And thank goodness it did. Can you imagine a Star Wars: Episode VII where much of the story centers around Solo (and we’re guessing Leia as his wife) and their lives 30 years after Return of the Jedi ended? We can, especially given that the latest trilogy is said to focus on Leia and Solo’s children and the rise of a new enemy using that pesky dark side of the force.

Ford has also said that he wishes that Lucas had killed off Solo in a blaze of glory. What better way to achieve that wish than to have a meaty role in Star Wars: Episode VII, get killed off in the end by someone wielding the dark side anew, and motivate your children to extol justice?

Start. Printing. Money.

9 Most Annoying Star Wars Characters
Maybe it was how it was written. Perhaps, it was how it was played by Jake Lloyd... and maybe it was both. But young Anakin Skywalker, known as Ani, was just plain awful. .. and annoying!

Maybe it was how it was written. Perhaps, it was how it was played by Jake Lloyd... and maybe it was both. But young Anakin Skywalker, known as Ani, was just plain awful. .. and annoying!

Jar Jar Binks

2. Jar Jar Binks

Surprised? Hardly! Jar Jar Binks was not only annoying, but his portrayal also flirted with being a little racist. We know Lucas wanted to give the kids another fun character, but this guy?!

Yarna D'al Gargan

3. Yarna D'al Gargan

In Return of the Jedi there were many exotic characters in Jabba's lair. Yarna D'al Gargan was not exotic... just annoying.

Bail Organa

4. Bail Organa

On paper, Bail Organa should have been a compelling character. Perhaps it was how it was written or how Lucas directed star Jimmy Smits, but how it came to be in the second trilogy... Bail was stale, stiff and just frankly irked us.

General Grievous

5. General Grievous

How is General Grievous supposed to be one of the most feared villains in the Star Wars world? He coughs all the time and he appears like a frail robot who could be taken out by a blaster. We find Grievous not fear-inducing... just funny.

Jedis Who Get Wiped Out in Revenge of the Sith

6. Jedis Who Get Wiped Out in Revenge of the Sith

All those wasted Jedis! Supposedly, they're the most trained warriors in the galaxy, yet Lucas wastes hundreds of them in one scene that simply annoys us more than anything. These "soldiers" look like they just picked up a lightsaber last week!

Watto

7. Watto

That thing kept Ani and his mother as slaves. Couldn't they have just grabbed him and then beaten the crap out of him and escaped? Surely, Ani's menacing slave master could have been more... menacing?

The Neimoidians

8. The Neimoidians

If Jar Jar Binks was a slightly racially offensive effort, then we must also consider the Asian stereotypes that were truly insulting with the existence of the Neimoidians. Surely, Lucas could have done something better for these legislators.

Fode

9. Fode

Was it us, or did this guy seem completely out of place? And we get the play by play and comedic color commentary, but why not create two vastly different characters instead of having one with two heads? Just. Silly. And annoying!

Gone Girl: Author Talks Changes in Page to Screen

When that Gone Girl trailer landed last week, the Ben Affleck-starring thriller’s tease sent hearts racing in anticipation for the October release. The author of the book that the David Fincher (one of our 17 directors who continually deliver) film is based on was brought on to write the screenplay and has famously re-written the third act to make it a more effective story for film.

Gone Girl Book

Gillian Flynn penned the novel and it quickly went to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list where it spent 79 consecutive weeks at the number one spot. Reese Witherspoon secured the rights to the film, cast Affleck, hired Fincher and the rest is about to be history.

But, one thing changed… Fincher asked Flynn to alter the ending to her book. In the process, the author essentially added a third act and turned her book into what would be the first two acts of the movie.

Flynn talked to GMA and admitted that, forget the movie buzz, even the success of the book itself was a shock. “It was really wild because, first of all, the book did better than anyone thought, so it became this kind of cool thing. And I was like, ‘Oh, well, that’s great. That’s enough,’” Flynn said.

Then one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in Witherspoon came calling, herself completely taken with the power of the story of a man who is perceived to have the ideal marriage, then becomes the number one suspect in his wife's disappearance and suspected murder.

When it comes to re-working the end, she is pretty tight-lipped. After all, she wants you to see the movie and be shocked at its twists and turns. “I cannot give away the ending of the movie,” Flynn said. Although she promises that since she is still firmly in control of the story audiences will see, fans should be confident.

“I wrote the screenplay, so it was in good hands. People, I think, were kind of worried that it would turn into, you know, a musical or something -- the feel-good hit of the summer. And it’s not that.”

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced their cast for Star Wars: Episode VII… finally! The cast gathered in London for a read-through and the following photograph was released!

Star Wars Episode VII Cast Read

The film will feature the previously rumored Adam Driver (we’ve guessed that he’s the main villain), as well as John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis (soon to be seen in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow.

They will join original stars (which we had long thought would be in it) Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker in the new film.

"We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII,” Abrams said in a statement with the announcement of the cast.

“It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Preproduction is already underway in Abu Dhabi and soon in Iceland, and the film is penned by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. Look for Star Wars: Episode VII in December of 2015. More on this throughout the day!

Hot on the heels of that terrific Godzilla Roar Featurette that featured filmmakers and even star Bryan Cranston giving their best iconic roar from the king of the monsters, we’ve got a dazzling new trailer.

The clip is meant for Asian audiences and it’s all sorts of awesome. Perhaps they saved the big guns trailer for the demographic that gave birth to the monster that has been terrifying audiences since 1954?

The latest Godzilla trailer features not only some great shots of the monster itself being birthed as it breaks out of government lockdown containment, but also another flying beast called Muto.

As you see in the below trailer, this thing flies and appears to share something in common with humans: Utter disdain for Godzilla.

Godzilla smashes its way onto screens May 16 starring Cranston, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen.

When it comes to the stars' names above the movie title, there are only a few that have us getting in line to buy tickets simply because they're in it. It doesn't matter the subject or genre of the film, if so-and-so is the star -- we're there!

We have 19 actors and actresses that if they have committed to a project, it immediately goes to the top of our must-see lists.

Some make us laugh every time out, check out these Anchorman quotes for a few of his chuckles. Others have had us drawn to their work for years  -- watch The Big Lebowski online for this actress' true coming-out party.

We've named our 17 directors that constantly deliver and now we present our 19 actors who we'd watch in anything.

Click through and witness greatness in our 19 performers who always give perfection.

19 Stars We'd Watch in Anything
Daniel Day Lewis is a modern acting chameleon. There is nothing he can't do and evidence of that was recently seen in his Oscar-winning turn as our most popular president, Abraham Lincoln. He can play villain (Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood) and he can play heroic (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father). It doesn't matter what side of the moral coin he's on, we're there -- front & center.

It doesn't matter what side of the moral coin he's on, we're there -- front & center.

Meryl Streep

2. Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep didn't become the most nominated actress in Oscar history because she doesn't bring the goods! She takes even the most average movie (August: Osage County) and makes it a must-see.

Denzel Washington

3. Denzel Washington

Really, what more needs to be said other than "starring Denzel Washington" and you know you are in for a treat?!

Ryan Gosling

4. Ryan Gosling

Besides his searing good looks, Ryan Gosling has the type of supreme acting talent that directors and fellow performers kill to work with. Whether in Drive or Gangster Squad, if Gosling is in it -- there's got to be something redeemable about it

Kate Winslet

5. Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet has kind of quietly become one of those actresses that commands our attention. Sure, she made a huge splash with Titanic. But since then, she has chosen roles in movies big and small that are required viewing for anyone who considers themselves a movie fanatic.

Viggo Mortensen

6. Viggo Mortensen

Because Viggo Mortensen doesn't make many movies, our passion is almost even more feverish for a film if he's in it. Think about it... Can you imagine any movie he is in with someone else in the role? Didn't think so.

Colin Firth

7. Colin Firth

Since he waded out of the water and became a household name in Pride and Prejudice, there isn't a film that Colin FIrth appeared in that we have not seen. And that will not change heading far into the future.

Helen Mirren

8. Helen Mirren

The best thing about Red 2? Helen Mirren! And that's exactly our point with this list. Mirren is doing what she was put on this earth to do and that means that if her name is attached to a film, it immediately becomes required viewing.

Don Cheadle

9. Don Cheadle

Don Cheadle is an actor's actor. He is the ultimate volley partner in any scene and as such, he brings so much validity to any film. Whether big blockbusters such as Iron Man 3 or smaller films such as Hotel Rwanda, Cheadle is the real deal. Now, if we can just get his Miles Davis biopic off the ground!

George Clooney

10. George Clooney

There was a time, many years ago, where George Clooney was trying so hard to be a movie star. And oftentimes, it didn't work. But in the last decade or so, he has become the type of actor that we will watch in anything. There is a gravitas to any role he takes, and as such, the movie itself is elevated.

Jude Law

11. Jude Law

Jude Law has not always been a we'll see him in anything actor. But lately, he's found a comfort zone and the roles he chooses have us knowing that what we witness him in will be sublime.

Amy Adams

12. Amy Adams

Is it us, or is Amy Adams getting better with time? She was already a stunning actress of the highest order. But, with her work in varied films such as The Muppets and American Hustle, Ms. Adams, your talent has us in the front row every time.

Bill Nighy

13. Bill Nighy

Bill Nighy is another who has quietly made film after film that has delighted us. Whether playing out-there, like in Pirate Radio, or lovable father, like in About Time, Nighy knows how to make any film worthy of our time.

Christian Bale

14. Christian Bale

Ever since his first film he made at the age of 12, Empire of the Sun, Christian Bale has been firmly on our radar. If he is in a film, it shoots to the top of the list. He is likely one of our generation's greatest performers. Period.

Emma Thompson

15. Emma Thompson

Let's put it this way about Emma Thompson. She made a made-for-kids movie, Nanny McPhee (and its sequel), watchable for everyone. Just simply because when she's on the screen, it is a gift to the world.

Julianne Moore

16. Julianne Moore

Is there anything Julianne Moore cannot do? Heck, she played Sarah Palin to a "T." We loved her since seeing her in The Fugitive, Short Cuts and then The Big Lebowski. She was even brilliant on 30 Rock (has anyone ever heard a better Boston accent!). And now that she's in Mockingjay, Hunger Games fans the world over will learn what we already know -- if Moore is in the movie, then it is going to be something truly special.

Will Ferrell

17. Will Ferrell

Now, not every Will Ferrell movie is great. Let's just get that out of the way. But one thing is for sure: If it is a comedy -- you will laugh. And even if it's a drama like Everything Must Go, his talent will surprise and dazzle you. Yes, we would watch him in anything -- even the silly stuff.

Laura Linney

18. Laura Linney

Laura Linney is one of those underrated actresses who will get their due over time. But for us, there is nothing she does that isn't brilliant, compelling and a piece of work that makes you forget about the world around you because you are so focused on the acting brilliance put forth by this American treasure.

Joseph Gordon Levitt

19. Joseph Gordon Levitt

Joseph Gordon Levitt's come a long way since he was that awkward kid on 3rd Rock from the Sun. Since then, he has become one of our most talented actors. Whether in sci-fi action (Looper) or drama-comedy (50/50) and now writing-directing and starring (Don Jon), this uber talented actor is simply getting started. And that is great news for us film fans.

Transformers: Age of Extinction has released a new still and it's of one of our favorite characters from the Michael Bay films, and of course, the toy line that the film series is based upon.

Things will be much different this time out for the fourth Transformers film from Michael Bay.

Shia LaBeouf, he's out of here! And as you can tell from the Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer, Mark Wahlberg is now the star and that is one serious improvement.

Wahlberg is quite the action star and as this is one of the biggest action franchises on the planet, it's only fitting that the two meet!

We also get the impression that the world may have moved past the Transformers in this fourth film and we all know that is one huge mistake. With those long rumored Dinobots making the scene, who do you think is going to save our butt this time out?

Perhaps Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee?

X-Men Days of Future Past Exclusive: Simon Kinberg on How Wolverine Chosen to Go Back!

$

0

If there was a perfect person to write X-Men: Days of Future Past it was Simon Kinberg. He penned X-Men: Last Stand and X-Men: First Class. He is keenly aware of both words and as a bonus -- he is a lifelong fan of the comic books.

Hugh Jackman Michael Fassbender James McAvoy X-Men: Days of Future Past

We caught up with Kinberg for an exclusive interview to explore how the entire X-Men: Days of Future Pastproject even came together, and he tells us how it was decided that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would be the one who would go back in time and bridge the worlds that had Ian McKellen as Magneto and Patrick Stewart as Professor X in the future and James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto in the past.

Kinberg also takes us inside the process of putting these worlds together and the complications of making something that is truly extraordinary happen in one of the must-see summer movies of 2014.

Movie Fanatic: As the writer of X-Men: Last Stand and X-Men: First Class, was it always a dream to get these two worlds together?

Simon Kinberg: It’s an interesting thing because when we finished First Class we were about to get to work on the film that we thought would be the sequel to First Class. It was going to be more of a pure sequel. We had all these great stories from the comic books, but none of them were Days of Future Past. Then in truth, someone from the studio said, “What if you had brought in Ian (McKellen) and Patrick (Stewart) as bookends to the movie and they’re not related to the main story, but they’re just in it." The second they said that I wondered why we weren’t talking about Days of Future Past. So, I called Matthew (Vaughn, First Class director) and he was more of a cartoon fan of it. I sent him the comic book and he immediately said, “This is what we should do.” Then we called the studio and they were both incredibly excited and incredibly terrified. How do we figure out the schedules, the contracts, and the logistics? They had no contracts with any of the original X-Men cast members -- not even Hugh (Jackman). They were so excited for the potential for it in a post-Avengers world that they pursued it. We honestly, kind of stumbled into it.

Movie Fanatic: Was it something you ever even considered?

Simon Kinberg: No, it was something that I didn’t dare dream. Even bringing in Hugh for a cameo in First Class was a very late in the game idea that we had. It wasn’t even scripted. There was never a notion that we could do this whole movie with all of them.

Ian McKellen X-Men: Days of Future Past

Movie Fanatic: Then, once it was a go. That had to be some pressure to put it all together as the writer of the story.

Simon Kinberg: The original story in Days of Future Past was really helpful. I note carded it like I would do an original script. It was told, pretty much, perfectly. Then, we had to figure out where is it missing sequences that help it conform to a three act structure of a movie. The first and biggest question was, “Who do we send back in time?” Because in X3 we cast Ellen Page as a 25-year-old girl and we wanted to send someone’s consciousness to their younger body and she would be negative 20 years old [laughs] at the time of James McAvoy and James Fassbender. We talked about Bishop. And then I was like, “There is a character who would be the same age in 1960s and he is today and he happens to be the fan favorite from the movies.” We should make it Hugh going back in time. That sparked an interesting weapon X things that we could explore with young Stryker, and it opened up the movie even more.

Movie Fanatic: What was the biggest challenge at that point?

Simon Kinberg: The second big question was for us -- and this is the hardest thing doing these X-Men movies – was whose movie is it emotionally? For us, First Class was Erik’s movie. Very quickly we figured Charles’ story. This is a guy who lost his sister. He lost his legs and his best friend. He lost his hope in First Class. Where is that guy five or 10 years later? Who is he? That opened up this broken man story – how does he became this Professor X we know, played by Patrick Stewart. That was just so rich. It is the origins of professor X.

Movie Fanatic: You see that in the first X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer when James says, “I don’t want your future!” You can hear it in James voice. Everything you’re talking about…

Simon Kinberg: Well, those actors are so good! There will never be another cast like this.

Movie Fanatic: For you, the expectations once people hear about this movie being the combination of both X-Men worlds had to be sky high. Do you have to zero those out in order to focus on the task at hand of writing X-Men: Days of Future Past?

X-Men Days of Future Past Logo

Simon Kinberg: You hope as a fan yourself, that the things that you hold sacred, are the things that most sacred to them. You have to trust that. As a writer, you have to trust your own gut. I grew up a fan. I geek out the same way everybody does that there’s going to be a Days of Future Past movie! I followed my instincts as to what the core values of the original stories are. There are details of the storytelling that you have to change because it’s a different medium of storytelling.

Movie Fanatic: As a fan, and as someone who is ingrained in the universe now, what do you think it is about the X-Men that endears them so much to their legions of fans?

Simon Kinberg: Being outsiders. It’s a very character driven book and the movies too. Everyone knows what it is like to feel like an outsider. It’s true for Prince William as it is for the most outsider awkward kid in a middle American high school. It’s fundamental to the human condition. That is it.

The Legend of Hercules DVD Review: Kellan Lutz Goes Mythic

The Legend of Hercules lands on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download and as fans gear up for the Dwayne Johnson version of Hercules landing this summer, it might be nice to check this flick out to see how the legend got started.

The Legend of Hercules DVD

Johnson’s tale finds the mythic hero later in life having to rediscover his moral compass. But in The Legend of Hercules, star Kellan Lutz is not quite the Hercules we recall from mythology. This is a true origins story in the purest sense.

We learn early on that Hercules’ birth is divine (from the god Zeus) in that his mother is pregnant and it is not from his rule with an iron fist regal father. The king makes it clear to his queen that that child will never rule, and in fact, their life will be quite like hell.

Lutz makes a convincing Hercules and watching him grow into the legend of the title is actually quite interesting as a character study. What fails him is the overall story and direction from Renny Harlin. The story kind of plods along and never really builds to anything remote close to the promise of the premise.

As teased in The Legend of Hercules trailer, Lutz has grown up and is essentially treated like the bastard child instead of the prince that he should be. His brother is the one promised the throne and when it appears that a regal transition is within sight, Lutz’s character is sent off to a war that is essentially a suicide mission. But, it is in that battle that he finds his true strength and the first sign that he’s Hercules comes to light.

He will learn of his powers and begin to channel what it is that will make him a half-human, half-god soul to be reckoned with.

Kellan Lutz The Legend of Hercules

This is Lutz’s movie from beginning to end if anything, he establishes himself as someone who can take the action hero crown if it is something that he wants.

When it comes to bonus features, The Making of The Legend of Hercules documentary has to be the big selling point here. It features Lutz and Harlin talking about the challenge of bringing this story and this character to the screen. It is a sword and sandals epic and as such, the behind-the-scenes featurette explores the themes that make that subgenre of action one that so many adore. The fact that the “making of” actually is more interesting than the film itself is a problem.

But, for fans of the Hercules myth, the film’s journey should be an interesting one. Given that this is truly Lutz’s film, his audio commentary (with director Harlin) is also fascinating.

One of our favorite British character actors, Bob Hoskins, has passed away at the age of 71.

The star, best known for his role in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, passed away last night from complications from pneumonia.

Hoskins was a veteran of UK stage, screen and television in the 70s and even started building an international reputation for his unique accent in films such as Mona Lisa and Brazil

But, it was his role in the live action-animated smash hit Who Framed Roger Rabbit that sent his fame through the roof.

He would then go on to star in such films as Super Mario Bros. and the Steven Spielberg directed Hook, giving a delightful performance as the pirate Smee.

He was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2012 and would retire from acting, but right before that he appeared in the smash hit Snow White and the Huntsman as one of the dwarves. That would be his final performance.

Hoskins will be missed.

Sam Mendes Talks Return to Bond 24

Skyfall director Sam Mendes went back and forth as to whether he would return to the director’s chair for the next Bond film, right now known as Bond 24. But, Mendes is returning to direct Bond 24 and that is great news to millions of fans including us.

Sam Mendes Picture

The reason why was because he wasn’t sure he could give the next installment the type of time needed to make it as good and even better than the film that gave us those Skyfall quotes. But, then he realized that what he started in Skyfall wasn’t complete and he felt he did not want to turn over the reins to someone else given what he had started.

“I cast a new M. I cast a new Moneypenny. I cast a new Q. I cast a new Tanner,” he told interviewer Charlie Rose.

“I felt there was a way to create the second part of a two-part story.”

Mendes managed to put something in his Bond film that had largely been absent in the franchise’s previous installment… simply, time.

“What we tried to do, and what audiences seemed to embrace in Skyfall was for the first time, characters were allowed to age, and they were allowed to acknowledge the passing of the years,” Mendes said. “And they could acknowledge the history in a kind of sly, mischievous way.”

And the final aspect that got Mendes to return was the production company behind the franchise, EON, allowed him (here’s that word again) time to let Skyfall breathe without heading right into production on the follow-up. That is especially impressive given that Skyfall was by far the highest grossing Bond film of all time and most film companies would want to strike while that iron was still steaming.

“They (EON) agreed to wait a little longer and not go immediately, and not go with two movies but with one -- which I felt very strongly about -- because initially there was that plan,” Mendes said.

Bond 24 opens in the US on November 6, 2015. Until then, watch Skyfall online and you can see why anticipation is so high for the follow-up.

Everyone knows a good comedy is hard to come by in Hollywood. A comic movie that works is worth more than gold for fans of the genre. So, when there is one that scores, it becomes an instant classic.
