Devil’s Due DVD Review: Found Footage Gives Birth

$

0

Devil’s Due lands on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download as a refreshing and unique take on the found footage format that is so popular in horror movies since The Blair Witch Project really launched the genre (check out our 11 best found footage movies) to the masses.

Devil's Due DVD

The story follows a couple as they buy a video camera to chronicle their big wedding, and then their honeymoon as they start their life together. The wedding goes swimmingly well, and the honeymoon is great -- until the last night.

Neither remembers anything from that final night, and they dismiss it as one last hurrah of rum and romance. But soon after they get home, the wife announces she’s pregnant. They’re thrilled, until things start getting weird.

Our theatrical Devil’s Due review found the film quite unique and a refreshing addition to the found footage horror canon. It recalls Rosemary’s Baby in many ways and as we heard in our Radio Silence exclusive interview, the director collective who made the movie wanted it to feel exactly like that horror classic. But, what is so different is that by incorporating found footage and point of view, they have put the audience into the horror!

Devil's Due Allison Miller

The bonus features on Devil’s Due are not all that much. But the highlight has to be the featurette Radio Silence: A Hell of a Tea. It takes the viewer inside the filmmaking process that is the four-person directing quartet. They are a fascinating and incredibly creative group that we cannot wait to see what else they do in their career.

There are some deleted scenes, which we’re usually not the hugest fans of, but due to the found footage element of these cut scenes, they actually prove to be quite fascinating.

And as Devil’s Due is truly a passion project for its directors, the directors' commentary is a must-see as their insight is truly priceless and deep. Then, the directors' photo album takes you through the filmmaking process. For fans of the movie, it is one great final gift on the Devil’s Due DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Speaking of digital download, watch Devil’s Due online right now!

When we heard that Sony and Fox were collaborating with their individual Marvel properties, it was thrilling. What they revealed was a scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past that played after the credits finished on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Sure, you saw the Sinister Six suit reveal during the credits, but did you stay until the end to see the scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past?

If not… fret not, we have it!

It features a group of mutants who appear to be ready for transport by some sort of independent military group. But, when one soldier refuses, we discover it’s really Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique!

X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters May 23. Watch X-Men online and see how it all started and then get ready for the Super Bowl of X-Men movies!

Star Wars Episode VII: Do We Have a Working Title?

Now that we have the Star Wars: Episode VII cast announced, expectations could not have gone any higher. But then again, we’re just getting started on the eagerness factor for the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga.

Star Wars Episode VII Logo

For instance, what on earth will the title be? According to Ain’t It Cool News, it’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Ancient Fear.

If you’re wondering where that came from, all you need to do is look to the casting of Max von Sydow. He is, we’re guessing, going to play our main villain -- of course with Adam Driver being bad in a supporting role.

Don’t count on an official title reveal until Comic-Con in July (and we’re guessing there will be a lot more coming out of that pop culture fest from Star Wars).

The latest Star Wars from J.J. Abrams will land in theaters December 18, 2015.

What do you think of the rumored title?

And while we're on the subject, click through and see the 9 things we want to see in Star Wars: Episode VII

Some had a problem with Abrams' casting in that there was a lack of female roles beyond Carrie Fisher and newcomer Daisy Ridley. Do not forget that this is just the main cast. This story is not going to solely be focused on Leia, Han, Luke AND Ridley's character. There is an opportunity to have a much vaster cast as this thing fills out. Let Ford do his hero thing for 80 minutes. Then, simultaneously give fans and the legacy of Han Solo a righteous salute and knock him off at the end of Star Wars: Episode VII. That catapults his children (of which we believe Ridley is one) to seek Jedi (with Leia as mom and Luke as uncle, tell me The Force is not strong with them) justice in Episode VIII and Episode IX.

Adam Driver has a lot of people wondering how deeply he could channel evil as the villain of Episode VII. He's no Darth Vader. Audiences will know that going in. Effects That Push Boundaries

7. Effects That Push Boundaries

Abrams gave us some impressive sci-fi landscapes in Star Trek and his other films, such as Super 8. While watching Star Wars: Episode VII, we want to have our jaws drop. With the technology available today and expectations never higher for a film in recent memory, this flick needs to be a feast for the ears, eyes and heart.

Kasdan's Power with Character

8. Kasdan's Power with Character

Our favorite Star Wars film is The Empire Strikes Back: Lawrence Kasdan penned that classic and to hear that he is co-writing Star Wars: Episode VII with Abrams is one of the best moves this new trilogy has made. The way he writes characters that move a story along with heart-racing action sequences... let's just say our hopes are high.

Light Sabers, The Millennium Falcon & More!

Spring Breakers was one of our favorite films the year it came out and landed firmly on our top 10 movies of 2012. As many of you recalled, it stars James Franco as a drug dealing rapper wannabe who befriends a quartet of college girls on spring break.

They go on a little crime spree and in the process the film makes a wildly strong statement about violence and youth in America.

Now, we’ve received word from the Cannes Film Festival that the European film finance company named Wild Bunch is eager to see what happens next in the world of Spring Breakers and has announced plans to start gathering financing for Spring Breakers: The Second Coming.

Don’t discount this effort by any means. The Wild Bunch has backed movies as awesome as Enter the Void, Blue Is the Warmest Color and Only God Forgives. This isn’t a straight to video sequel effort.

Stay tuned as details come together and let’s just say we’re intrigued.

Until then, watch Spring Breakers online and discover why we love it so.

Tammy Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Has Issues

The latest Tammy trailer has arrived and it showcases Melissa McCarthy (one of our 21 funniest women in movies) as a woman who is going through kind of a hard time. It is the directorial debut of McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone.

In Tammy, McCarthy has had one heck of a day. She’s totaled her car, been fired and as she enters her home after those day-ruining events, she discovers that her husband is cheating on her.

McCarthy’s Tammy has nowhere to go, no car to get there and clearly she is broke. Where else can she turn? How about her mother (Susan Sarandon) who absolutely drives her nuts? That ought to work out well!

Tammy lands in theaters July 2.

The first TV trailer for 22 Jump Street has landed and it finds Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in... couples therapy?

As seen in the 22 Jump Street red band trailer, these two are back in action and they're leaving high school behind and heading off to college to try to bring down a drug ring.

And spring break is obviously something that has to happen -- got to stay committed to that college undercover thing after all!

Point Break Remake: Gerard Butler Drops Out

If anyone could handle the pressure of stepping into Patrick Swayze’s board shorts as Bodhi in the Point Break remake, it was Gerard Butler. But, we have news today that Butler has exited the production, merely weeks before principal photography was set to shoot.

Gerard Butler in Of Men and Mavericks

Point Break producers told us that this remake is going to push the envelope when it comes to extreme sports captured on film. That aspect of the shooting has already begun, so we suspect that director Ericson Core is now frantically searching for a replacement.

Meanwhile, Luke Bracey is still committed to take over the Keanu Reeves role of Johnny Utah.

It’s going to be tough to live up to the movie that gave us those Point Break quotes, but given the nature of what producers told us they will be filming, we still have high hopes for the Alcon Entertainment project.

Watch Point Break online and remind yourself why the Kathryn Bigelow film is such a classic.

Veronica Mars DVD Review: Kristen Bell Is Back Detecting

$

Veronica Mars is the first true major motion picture to arrive from a Kickstarter campaign. It arrived on screens earlier this year and now Veronica Mars is out on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Veronica Mars Blu-Ray

Kristen Bell is the title character and as our film starts, it’s been 10 years since she left her teenage private detective world of Neptune and she is happy in a serious relationship and about to graduate law school.

As teased in the Veronica Mars trailer, after a killer interview with a major law firm (run by Jamie Lee Curtis!), she sees an item on the news. Her high school sweetheart, Logan (Jason Dohring), has been arrested for murder. Soon after, he calls and asks for her help. Naturally, she races back to Neptune.

Mars gets deeply involved in the case and the more she tries to help Logan, the more she realizes that things in Neptune are anything but black and white. In fact, it’s seeped in shades of grey.

Fans of the TV series will be absolutely thrilled with the movie, as we stated in our theatrical Veronica Mars review. But, they will be even more enthralled by the Veronica Mars DVD and Blu-Ray with its fan-centric bonus features.

We have to start with the bonus feature, By The Fans: The Making of the Veronica Mars Movie. It showcases the creative process behind the movie from the Kickstarter campaign through shooting and its premiere at SXSW. It is a fascinating look, and should be seen as almost a historical doc for how it portrays the first real publicly funded Hollywood movie.

If Veronica Mars can be held as the model -- which it should be -- it is a revolutionary moment in film. And that is impeccably captured in By The Fans: The Making of the Veronica Mars Movie.

Kristen Bell Stars in Veronica Mars

The deleted scenes and gag reel are both treasure troves of excellence for Marshmallows (what Veronica Mars fans call themselves).

Then, there are six, count ‘em six, featurettes chronicling the craziness of the filming of Veronica Mars. Our faves are More On-Set Fun: Welcome to Keith Mars Investigation because of its look at the actor who plays Veronica’s father, the always awesome Enrico Colantoni.

Also a blast is More On-Set Fun: Young Veronica which takes us from those early TV days to this film and paints a picture of a fully developed character that could not have had a better actress cast to portray her all those years ago in Bell.

We cannot recommend this film enough for fans, so why not watch Veronica Mars online right now.

Star Wars: “At Least Three” Spin-Offs Are Confirmed

While the Star Wars: Episode VII casting still has us buzzing, there’s some new Star Wars news that should also make fans excited. So far it’s only been a rumor that Disney would make Star Wars spin-off films and today the head of the company said there will be “at least three!”

Return of the Jedi Boba Fett

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger was talking to investors today on a conference call discussing the second quarter fiscal earnings and confirmed what we had been dreaming about for some time.

There’s no word as to who these films will focus on, but if we had to bet, they would be origins stories for Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda.

Star Wars: Episode VII co-writer Larry Kasdan and X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg are known to be involved in developing the stand-alone origins movies. And now that we know they’re a reality, let the celebration begin.

Our guess is that they will arrive in between each of Abrams’ Star Wars films, so in 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Stay tuned!

9. Light Sabers, The Millennium Falcon & More!

Clearly certain things will be in the new trilogy including our weapon of choice: light sabers. But, we also expect to see the Millennium Falcon, blasters, AT-ATs, land speeders and more fan favorites.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has released a new clip and to say it’s cute is beyond an understatement. The clip features some of the littlest dragons of Berk taking flight for the first time -- and they're not very good!

See, things have changed in Berk where Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) has forged a new relationship with dragons and humans.

The sequel to How to Train Your Dragon lands June 13 and brings back not only Baruchel and his lovable buddy Toothless, but the voices of Gerard Butler (who just dropped out of Point Break), Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Kristen Wiig.

Just as the relationship between dragons and humans seems to be never better, the evil Drago has command of a group of uber-evil dragons that not only threaten the peace of the land, but the residents of Berk’s very existence.

Watch How to Train Your Dragon online and get ready for the big sequel.

Insidious Chapter 3: Franchise Screenwriter Hired to Write, Direct

As we previously reported, Insidious: Chapter 3 is coming soon and for fans of the series, the announcement today of the hiring of a director should be fantastic news.

Insidious Chapter 2 Photo

Leigh Whannell, the screenwriter for Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 has been tapped to helm the series’ next chapter, which has proven to be one of the more successful horror film series in recent memory. James Wan had directed the previous two, but has now moved on to helm Fast and Furious 7.

Insidious: Chapter 2 opened last year and banked $40 million in its opening weekend, making it one of the highest grossing premieres for a horror movie in history.

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions will produce along with Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity franchise) and Wan.

The studio behind the series is also clearly thrilled. “It’s with great pleasure that we turn the Insidious franchise over to the co-creator Leigh Whannell,” said Peter Schlessel, Focus Features’ CEO.

“We are all excited to see in what direction Leigh takes the next installment and we are also glad to welcome James Wan to his new role as producer.”

Blum mirrored Schlessel’s sentiment. “We are all excited to bring a third film to audiences and know James and Leigh have great things in store for our fans," added Blum.

Look for Insidious: Chapter 3 on April 3, 2015 and until then, let’s see how the horror started and watch Insidious online

X-Men: Days of Future Past has unveiled two new stills as the release date for their highly anticipated film inches ever closer. Is it us, or can May 23 not get here soon enough?!

The first of the two photos features real life couple Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and Nicholas Hoult as Beast looking quite... romantic? Who knew these two hook up?

We're wondering if Mystique is playing people in this flick. As you can see from the X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer, Mystique has a kiss with Michael Fassbender's Magneto. And as fans of the X-Men series know, Mystique does not have the highest moral compass!

The second pic is of Lawrence looking quite stylish. As shown in this X-Men: Days of Future Past featurette, Lawrence is in a Paris airport in the 1970s and is looking chic as she is about to meet James McAvoy's Professor X for a moment that will prove fateful in the entire X-Men universe.
