Avengers Age of Ultron: Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Elizabeth Olsen Talk Twins

When we caught up with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen for Godzilla, in which they star as husband and wife, we had to ask about their currently filming blockbuster where they play superhero twins. We, of course, are talking about Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Avengers Age of Ultron Scarlet Witch Concept Art

Olsen is Scarlet Witch and Taylor-Johnson is Quicksilver and the latter said playing husband and wife made it easy to slip into the roles of fraternal twins.

“I think we created the two characters next to be very different,” he said.

But, to be exact, if you see Captain America: The Winter Soldier and stay until the end, Taylor Johnson’s Quicksilver and Olsen’s Scarlet Witch appear. So technically they were twins first on screen before they were husband and wife in Godzilla. That is a point not lost on the head of the studio putting out the monster movie.

“But it was funny when I was talking to (Legendary Pictures head) Thomas Tull the other day, he was saying he saw Captain America and he saw us two, and he was like, ‘What are my actors doing in this?’ And I said, ‘Oh, that’s funny, Marvel actually beat you to it. Now we’re brother and sister before we were husband and wife!’”

Olsen appreciated the time they spent together making Godzilla and how it prepared them for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“I feel like that’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Olsen said and laughed.

Avengers Age of Ultron Quicksilver Concept Art

“Because you’re supposed to know your twin super well, so I feel really lucky that we have one film on us in order to start with Avengers. So, it worked out pretty amazingly.”

Taylor-Johnson clearly is enjoying just working alongside such a pro more than once, something most actors and actresses rarely get to do.

“She’s a great actress, and I really like working with her. She’s super brilliant,” Taylor-Johnson said.

“And in the Marvel comics, it’s slightly a bit incestuous anyway -- not that we’re going to do it that way,” he added with a laugh.

Godzilla Exclusive: Screenwriter Dishes Making a Monster

$

0

One of the most important things that Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein sought to bring to Hollywood’s latest incarnation of the Japanese-born monster was not to forget where he came from. Borenstein also wanted to continue the monster’s role in the last 60 years as serving as a physical manifestation of human fear.

Godzilla Monster Picture

We caught up with Borenstein for an exclusive chat where he took us inside the making of a monster movie that is surely one of the best summer movies this season -- as we report in our Godzilla review.

Movie Fanatic: There is a real reverence for the Japanese origins of Godzilla and it is clear you did a lot of research and there is a lot of love there for the series -- why was it important to you to have that and not have this be an Americanized version of a classic monster story?

Max Borenstein: Yes, I did a lot of research for it and I have a lot of reverence for it. And while doing the research I wanted to make sure I really was paying homage to the legacy and I developed a lot of love and respect for the franchise and the character. Part of it is thinking about… why Godzilla? Is there something special about Godzilla as opposed to any other intellectual property that you would adapt into a new film? I think there is. For me, it felt important to love this character. I wanted to dig deep and answer the question that is, “What is it about Godzilla that's so resonant over the years?" 60 years! It’s to the point that I know people who know the name Godzilla and have never seen a single movie.

Movie Fanatic: What did you find? Why is he so resonant?

Max Borenstein: You look back at all the Godzilla films and there is no one Godzilla. That’s why Godzilla can’t go out of style. Godzilla started as a walking allegory for nuclear war and became, over stylistic changes and cultural shifts in the '60s, a folk hero dealing with different fears, whether alien invasions or the like. In the '70s, he was dealing with environmental catastrophes, and in the '80s and '90s, with bioengineering. Whatever the fears of the moments were, he’s always able to accommodate those. The character has morphed from darker to lighter and darker again as taste changes. The thing that is the common denominator is the idea of Godzilla representing a force of nature that's beyond our control. He is the ultimate reminder that mankind, as much as we believe we are in control of the world around us, we’re really at its whim. That’s something that is very primal and infinitely variable because there is always something new. That was the linchpin.

Godzilla Ken Watanabe David Strathairn

Movie Fanatic: Clearly we can’t have Godzilla talk, but in many ways in your script, you have the scientist played by Ken Watanabe serve as the voice of him. Was that integral to getting your themes into the movie and having them verbalized?

Max Borenstein: Absolutely. That was the origin from the early phase of his character. He needed to be a Japanese character that had a connection to the events of the origin of Godzilla -- the mythos with the atomic bomb. That’s why he’s that voice. It felt important tonally to not allow that character to become just a talking head in terms of giving us scientific information. We were more interested in using him to convey these larger notions of balance and nature. In developing the Godzilla character, we wanted to respect that he’s an animal, but an animal with intelligence. It’s like the same way we look at a dolphin or a whale and we know there’s something going on in there, but we don’t understand it.

Movie Fanatic: You needed someone in this movie for Godzilla to fight, how did you settle in on the MOTUs?

Max Borenstein: We were searching for an antagonist for Godzilla that would feel tonally at peace with what we were trying to do. In a film like this, we’re trying to refresh the brand for a new audience. We didn’t want to say, “Accept as your premise that this 350-foot radioactive lizard will walk out of the ocean, and by the way, 30 minutes in, an asteroid is also going to crash to Earth that’s an alien.” For what we were trying to do, we wanted the audience to only have to make one major buy in, and beyond that we wanted to run with it in the most organic manner we possibly could. We struggled to conceive the antagonist that would be related to Godzilla’s natural life cycle. It would explain why he comes up and it would explain why he goes away.

A Million Ways to Die in the West Review: Seth MacFarlane Finds the Western Funny

$

Seth MacFarlane surprised a whole lot of people with the success of Ted. It instantly became one of those comedies that had people saying Ted quotes ad nauseam. Expectations could not be higher for his follow-up, A Million Ways to Die in the West. MacFarlane is clearly inspired by both Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles) and John Ford (pick any one of his Westerns), and as such, he has crafted a comedy-western that is equal parts of both.

Seth MacFarlane in A Million Ways to Die in the West

MacFarlane stars as a sheep farmer, Albert, in Arizona in 1862. Immediately we get the sense that this guy is completely out of place and he only enhances that fact by repeatedly talking about how awful life is for people like him during that time.

The title of the movie is expounded upon by the numerous forms of how souls perish -- as explained by Albert. And yes, we see many hilariously come to fruition!

Albert lives in a town that it seems if you are good with a gun, you’re set. His girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) doesn’t respect Albert due to his passive nature and ends up leaving him for the successful Moustachery owner (see the movie, you’ll get it) played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Lost and utterly depressed, he hides out in his house with his could care less parents. His friends (Giovanni Ribisi and Sarah Silverman -- who kills it as a whorehouse worker) try to comfort him to no avail.

Meanwhile, Charlize Theron’s Anna is trying to get away from her evil husband Clinch (Liam Neeson). He’s dressed in all back, from his hat to his boots, and we know immediately this guy is our villain. After a robbery, he sends Anna to a small town (Albert’s!) to hide out until he can come get her. It is there that she meets Albert and inspires him to stand up for himself. There might even be a spark of romance between the mismatched pair.

The thing about the film that is not seen in the A Million Ways to Die in the West trailer and other promotional materials, is that this is a movie that has a ton of humor, but is a true Western at heart. And not all the jokes are contained in the teasers.

MacFarlane also does not create one or two dimensional characters. Every single one of this ensemble cast gets to shine in their own way.

A Million Ways to Die in the West Charlize Theron Seth MacFarlane

The relationship between Silverman and Ribisi’s characters -- although utterly raunchy due to her profession and his complete cluelessness as to how it should affect him -- is charming. Harris and Seyfried buck Western movie stereotypes and craft characters that are inherently unique.

Then, there’s the chemistry between Theron and MacFarlane. One might not expect that these two would sizzle, but this is a comedy after all, and it is through the laughs and mishaps they collectively experience that it is completely believable that these two characters could have an amorous future.

We have to point out, in our A Million Ways to Die in the West review, that the film runs out of gas in the funny department.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. MacFarlane has crafted a Western with a truly nasty villain in Neeson who has to be dealt with by our hero in the third act. So, it’s not unexpected that the film abandons its full throttle comic nature to resolve the tension that has been building.

The film is such a hybrid of action, humor and classic Western milieus, it has us seriously intrigued with how MacFarlane will follow up A Million Ways to Die in the West.

As he told us in our Seth MacFarlane interview, he does what interests him. All we have to say to MacFarlane then is keep getting interested and we’ll be there. Until then, we'll watch Ted online.

The latest, and final, Edge of Tomorrow trailer has arrived from Warner Bros. and they have clearly saved the best for last.

Tom Cruise stars as a soldier who must relive the same day he dies over and over until he can figure out a way to break the cycle… and win the war. Having seen the film, this teaser absolutely nails it!

Emily Blunt is key to the entire thing as the same thing that is happening to Cruise happened to her. He may have to live and die hundreds of times before he finds the slimmest of ways out of this nightmare that holds the fate of the entire human race in the balance.

Edge of Tomorrow opens June 6 and very well may be Cruise’s best work in years!

When a writer sits down to pen a script, adding a betrayal to the drama is a sure-fire way to amp up the emotional explosiveness. When a movie features a betrayal, and it's done right, it can be a jaw-dropping and powerful experience for the audience.

Some movies have been awarded Academy Awards for Best Picture for their ability to move us immensely due to onscreen treachery. Watch Braveheart online for evidence of the fact that having a turncoat equals Oscar gold!

Others become iconic with their double-cross providing the moment in which the movie turns towards its thrilling climax.

Weekend Movie Preview: May 30, 2014

The last weekend movie preview for May closes out the month with two films that could not be more polar opposites! Angelina Jolie channels one of Disney's most iconic villains in the live action Maleficent -- which tells the origins story of the evildoer from Sleeping Beauty.

Then, Seth MacFarlane returns to the big screen after the huge success he had with Ted with a Western comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Let's break it down!

Maleficent: This is not your grandmother's Sleeping Beauty villain! Jolie portrays Maleficent as a woman who was scorned and out for revenge, even if it is misplaced. When she casts that curse on Princess Aurora, as she gets to know the young woman, she feels regret and dare we say it... maternal feelings!

Check out our Maleficent review for more on this aspect of the story. The acting from all involved, especially Jolie, Sharlto Copley and Elle Fanning, is top notch. And although it plays with the classic fairy tale, we still quite enjoyed the result.

A Million Ways to Die in the West: MacFarlane heads out west, and yes, hilarity ensues. But, unlike his previous effort, this is not hilarious from beginning to end. As our A Million Ways to Die in the West review points out, this is a comedy-Western and the latter part of that description truly rules the third act. MacFarlane's timid farmer must find his inner strength to face off against a classic Western villain (played astonishingly by Liam Neeson).

This Is Where I Leave You Trailer: Tina Fey & Jason Bateman Are Comic Siblings!

The trailer for This Is Where I Leave You has arrived and it has immediately become one of our most anticipated movies of the fall. The September 12 release stars Tina Fey and Jason Bateman as siblings who return home when their father dies.

Bateman’s character is in a rut. His wife cheated on him with his boss and now he heads home feeling rather worthless. Who better to cheer you up (or make you feel worse?) than your family?

Fey is not Bateman’s only sibling -- recent Star Wars: Episode VII cast member Adam Driver and Corey Stoll also star.

Jane Fonda is the matriarch and she certainly knows how to wield the dramedy weapons better than anyone!

Fresh from her killer Neighbors quotes, Rose Byrne also stars as a potential love interest for Bateman. And she is joined in the ensemble cast by Abigail Spencer, Timothy Olyphant, Connie Britton, Kathryn Hahn, Dax Shepard and Ben Schwartz.

The film is from director Shawn Levy (The Internship, Night at the Museum, Real Steel).

Josh Brolin has been added to the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy to voice the legendary Marvel villain Thanos.

But, this announcement really isn’t about the film that’s teased in that brilliant Guardians of the Galaxy trailer. It’s about the future of Marvel movies. Don’t look for Thanos to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but do expect him to be the baddie in Avengers 3.

Josh Brolin Oldboy Photo

Latino Review broke the story, and it surely has Marvel fans in a tizzy, much like they were in at the end of The Avengers when the legendary villain appeared after the end credits.

The Mad Titan, as he is called, will show up in the third act of Guardians of the Galaxy, and it will serve as a true launching pad for Thanos for all future Marvel endeavors. Given that the bad guy has attempted to repeatedly wipe out the human race in the comic book world, he could be seen as the ultimate cinematic villain for the Avengers and whoever else they want heading forward.

Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Avatar Sequels: James Cameron on “Experiment” of Writing Three Films at Once

$

James Cameron is busy with three Avatar sequels at the moment. And he tried something different this time out, writing three movies at one time. “We tried an experiment. We set ourselves a challenge of writing three films at the same time. I knew I could certainly write any one of them, but to write three in some reasonable amount of time...” Cameron stated at the Hero Complex film festival.

James Cameron Gives Direction

Given that he plans to film the three Avatar follow-ups back-to-back-to-back, scripts needed to be done, and what better way to do that than to have all three penned at the same time. He certainly would need some help.

“We wanted to shoot them together so we couldn’t start one until all three scripts were done and approved. So I knew I was going to have to ‘parallel process’ which meant I would have to work with other writers.”

He found some serious talent and the process began.

“And the best experience I had working with other writers was in television when I did Dark Angel. The television room is a highly collaborative and fun experience. So we put together a team, three teams actually -- one for each script. The teams consist of me and another writer on each one of those three films,” Cameron said.

“Each [individual writer] would have their own script that they’re responsible for. But what we did that was unique beforehand was we sat in a writing room for five months, eight hours a day, and we worked out every beat of the story across all three films so it all connects as one three film saga.”

Cameron even admitted he added a little mystery to the mix to keep it fresh.

“I didn’t tell [the three writers] which sequel was going to be theirs to write until the very last day. So everybody was equally invested story-wise in all three films. So the guy that got the third movie, which is the middle film of this new trilogy, he now knows what preceded and what follows out of what he’s writing at any given moment,” Cameron said.

“We all consider that to be a really exciting, creative and groundbreaking experiment in screenwriting. It worked as a process to get our minds around this epic and all these new creatures and environments and characters.”

One thing Hollywood does well is hype itself. And that is never truer than when touting the actors and actresses who will be the next 'it' guy or girl.

But, how often do those monikers prove correct?

We've found 13 performers who were labeled superstars before they truly earned the title, and more often than not, they are making a fine living as a supporting player currently, and one is even taking to reality TV to revive their career!

Others find ways to piss off their directors and get reduced to a blacklist of sorts (watch Transformers online for one of those!). Some just don't end up living up to the hype and manage to make bad choices in movies that bomb (watch Twilight online for that guy!).

And we've got a few on this list who actually chose to walk away from the potential of being a mega-star, and that we truly respect.

Click through and check out our 13 Hollywood next big things that just weren't.

Megan Fox
Megan Fox was everywhere. The Transformers chick was going to be the next Hollywood sex symbol. Then, she pissed off Michael Bay. It was downhill from there. But, she does have that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot coming -- perhaps her flame will ignite anew?

"I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

She is joining Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow in the next big screen Star Wars movie. Oh, and there are a few other actors you might know in the flick as well -- Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.

Look for Star Wars: Episode VII to open worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Han Solo Must Have a Huge Part
We've heard that Harrison Ford's Han Solo has an enormous part in the seventh Star Wars movie. Ford would not have signed on to J.J. Abrams' film if that was not the case.

The first trailer for What If stars Daniel Radcliffe as a man who meets the most amazing woman, played by Zoe Kazan, who just wants to be friends. Sure, no problem, right?

What If lands in August, and the romantic comedy asks that age old question about whether men and women can be friends. See, Kazan’s character has a boyfriend and thinks the world of Radcliffe and wants to be friends. He’s game, but she has no idea that he harbors a mad crush on her. That doesn’t sit well with her boyfriend (Rafe Spall), but he trusts Kazan.

Wonder how that will work out?

Joining the former Harry Potter star is new Star Wars: Episode VII cast member Adam Driver as Radcliffe’s roommate.

Pompeii DVD Review: Paul W.S. Anderson's Explosive Romance

Setting a love story against the backdrop of an iconic disaster is nothing new, just watch Titanic online and you’ll see one of the biggest. Another epic disaster is the one where a volcano emptied its lava and ash and destroyed everything in the Italian community of Pompeii.

Pompeii DVD

Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil franchise) cast Kit Harrington and Emily Browning as star-crossed lovebirds who find each other in the days leading up to that fateful mass destruction in Pompeii, out now on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

As you can see in the Pompeii trailer, Harrington plays a British slave who finds himself in Italy fighting for his life in gladiator-type games. Along the way to the titular city, he comes across a carriage in need of help. It is there that he meets Browning and immediately the sparks fly.

Pompeii is run by a governor (Jared Harris) who is being pushed around by a visitor from Rome (Kiefer Sutherland, doing his best overacting). This entire explosive situation will certainly get much hotter as the simmering volcano reaches its explosive fate.

Anderson is quite adept at these types of spectacles, and to see him stretch his wings on this film is a joy. We rather enjoyed the Pompeii experience, and it helps that the filmmaker was inspired by the real stories of people who died and were frozen in the ash forever. In fact, his film bookends those images.

This is truly Anderson’s film on so many levels, so to hear his filmmaker's commentary is an utter joy. Might we recommend watching the film as a whole first, then going back through a second time with Anderson adding his supremely informed thoughts on the making of his epic.

The Assembly: Cast and Characters feature chronicles how the stellar ensemble was put together from page to screen.

But, the big bonus feature here in terms of the filmmaking process is The Volcanic Eruption: Special Effects. It is a stunning cinematic achievement what Anderson did with his explosion of the volcano outside Pompeii that would go down as one of the worst natural disasters of all time. It is impressive what Anderson was able to do, but given the world he created with his Resident Evil movies, we should not be all that surprised.

There are 20 deleted and alternative scenes that are included that are an interesting addendum to the film itself and show fans of Anderson’s work how his mind operates when it comes to putting together an epic film.

The most exquisite of the bonus features works on so many levels for fans of the film, and appreciators of history, Pompeii: Buried in Time -- Behind the Scenes of Ancient History’s Greatest Disaster. Not only is it a haunting effort what Anderson did by recreating the disaster, but this bonus feature works so brilliantly at incorporating what really happened all those centuries ago with what we see in the, for the most part, entertaining movie.

You can't say that 22 Jump Street isn't aware of what it is doing. The sequel to the movie that gave us those 21 Jump Street quotes has fun with the entire idea of the sequel in the first of two clips to be released today.

In it, Ice Cube is back as Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's commanding officer. He tells the boys that, yes, they're going to college and that'll be different, but that you have the same names and the same assignment. "Do the same thing," he expertly says!

As you can tell by the 22 Jump Street red band trailer, with a college undercover mission, things will get a little more raunchy. But that same firebrand humor from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller that made us fall in love with these guys the first time is back when 22 Jump Street hits theaters June 13.

Our second clip features the boys moving into the dorms and meeting their across-the-hall neighbors, who are twins. Hilarity ensues when our two favorite undercover cops try to convince the twins that they too are as close as twins.

Maleficent: Elle Fanning Sees Angelina Jolie as “Just a Girl”

Elle Fanning, when you meet her in person, is so much like her character Aurora in Maleficent, it’s easy to see why when she walked in to audition, they pretty much gave her the part.

We talked to Fanning about the box office blockbuster, and she admitted that she was a little apprehensive to meet Angelina Jolie, not only because of that haunting costume as the Sleeping Beauty villain, but because she is probably the most famous woman in the world.

Elle Fanning Stars Maleficent

“I was extremely nervous to meet her. I mean you hear that name and you know exactly who she is,” Fanning told Movie Fanatic.

“I remember it was during rehearsals and we were in Pinewood Studios and I didn’t know I was going to meet her that day, we were doing like costume fittings and stuff, and then everyone started saying, ‘She’s here! She’s here!’ And I’m like, ‘My God.’ The knot was like growing in my stomach and then I turned the corner and there she was. She gave me a giant hug right away and said, ‘We’re gonna have so much fun working together.’”

To say that meant a lot to Fanning and put her at ease is clearly an understatement. “To have Angelina Jolie just hug you right away, it was really impactful,” Fanning admitted.

“I still get butterflies when I see her in an odd way even though we’ve worked together -- that kind of intensity that she has in photographs and on red carpets and that force around her. But then you meet her and she’s just a girl in a way, and we would just talk about girl things. You get to see her sensitivity and she’s super playful.”

Fanning was particularly taken with Jolie and her role as mother. “All her kids were on set and they’d yell, ‘Cut,’ and she’d be in her whole outfit and pick up Vivie and Knox on both hips in the cloak and all. For me to see that, it was such the opposite of what I kind of thought she would be.”

We know our favorite Top 11 Angelina Jolie movies, what are a few of Fanning’s favorites?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Girl, Interrupted, that’s one of my favorite movies, so, I really love that one,” she admitted.

One of the big appeals for Fanning was how this film truly celebrates women. It’s not about a couple of girls gabbing about guys. Even though in the fairy tale, it is Prince Charming who saves the day, as seen in the Maleficent trailer, this story is slightly different.

“I’m glad that our film was like that. Also kind of the way it ends up, it’s more of like a maternal love and a friendship love that wins out over a romantic love with a guy,” Fanning said -- something we marveled at in our Maleficent review.

Maleficent Angelina Jolie Elle Fanning

“That was a nice take on it, especially her being so powerful and being a leading lady in the movie. She’s totally in charge of the whole film and she’s a woman.”

The young actress was eager to join the Maleficent cast as a huge fan of the Disney movie, but also to become a part of a new take on it. “I was such a huge fan of the animated one and I’m like, ‘I feel like we’re breaking some weird Disney rule,’ like Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty aren’t supposed to talk to each other. They’re enemies,” she said.

“But the way it turned out, it’s a fresh take on it. And I think for the modern world, we need to have a modern story and it is. It’s very different.”

Of course for anyone who knows the Sleeping Beauty animated movie, or the fairy tale for that matter, you know that Fanning’s Aurora spends a little bit of time asleep. She had to actually fight falling asleep in real life!

“I’d go in and get dressed and put on everything and just sleep the entire day! It was so nice,” Fanning said and laughed.

“But then it’s like you can't really act. One time I did fall asleep laying there and it was so scary because you’re there and then that could be so bad because you can mess up the scene if you like start moving and not knowing you were asleep! It’s kind of hard. You had to fight yourself not to fall asleep!”
