Star Wars Episode VII: Harrison Ford is Hurt!

Harrison Ford was back in action as Han Solo and it didn’t take long for the actor to feel the pain of being back as the rogue hero. Word is that Ford injured his ankle on the London set of Star Wars: Episode VII and is now being cared for in a hospital.

Harrison Ford Picture

He is expected to heal just fine and get back into the action as soon as he can.

The production released a statement about the injury just now:

"Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates."

Huge productions are no strangers to injuries -- they happen all the time, and yet they still make their release date.

Look for Ford to recover and get right back to that Millennium Falcon deck as Star Wars: Episode VII blasts off December 18, 2015.

Han Solo Must Have a Huge Part
We've heard that Harrison Ford's Han Solo has an enormous part in the seventh Star Wars movie. Ford would not have signed on to J.J. Abrams' film if that was not the case.

22 Jump Street Exclusive: Amber Stevens on How Jonah Hill "Killed" Her With Humor

As we could tell from that first 22 Jump Street red band trailer, the sequel to the film that gave us those 21 Jump Street quotes was going to be off the hook.

What it also was, was incredibly self-aware. That was one thing that struck star Amber Stevens (who plays Jonah Hill’s love interest) the second she read the script.

22 Jump Street Jonah Hill Amber Stevens

We caught up with Stevens for an exclusive interview where she dished the genius of writer-filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, how working with Hill can be hazardous to getting through a scene without cracking up laughing and how filming the spring break scenes had her feeling that she couldn’t believe she was getting paid to have so much fun.

Movie Fanatic: The word I keep saying over and over after seeing 22 Jump Street is “smart.”

Amber Stevens: It is so smart!

Movie Fanatic: Was that something that was evident from the first script you read and what struck you the most about it?

Amber Stevens: It was there that first time I read through it. Phil (Lord) and Chris (Miller) are utter geniuses as you have seen from their work on the first movie and The LEGO Movie. I love how self-aware they are that they are making a sequel and how many times it is literally thrown in the audience's face that this is a sequel. When Ice Cube talks about how much larger the budget is and how he just expects them to do the same thing, it’s crazy good.

Movie Fanatic: Most of your scenes are with Jonah Hill. Can you name one where it was hard to keep a straight face?

Amber Stevens: Yes, I don’t even have to think about it. After we spend that first night together and we realize that Jillian Bell, who plays my roommate, was there the whole time, and the way she digs into Jonah and calls him out on his age and they go back and forth with the insults, that killed me. I almost had to pull a sheet over my face while that scene was being shot so as not to ruin it because I was laughing so much. I hope more of that scene is on the DVD because I swear those two went off on each other for like so many minutes.

Amber Stevens Photo

Movie Fanatic: You also got to go on the spring break scenes. That looked like fun, but chaos…

Amber Stevens: What so impressed me about that, and makes me even more impressed with Phil and Chris, is that that is no green screen with a CG crowd. All those people were really there that entire time we filmed those spring break scenes. Diplo was really there deejaying and it just felt like a huge party. I had to keep reminding myself that it was work. It was like I was at real spring break, and getting paid for it [laughs].

Movie Fanatic: Chris and Phil must have a talent for herding cats, because handling all those people…

Amber Stevens: I know! [Laughs] That was it exactly. There had to be thousands of people, and these two guys had control over the whole situation. And we actually got the shots we needed for the movie, and I think they came out so good. I don’t want to give away too much, but I even got in on a little action too! The entire experience was just too much fun.

Movie Fanatic: And you know what they say. If the performers are having fun, the audience does too. And that is so true with this.

Amber Stevens: 22 Jump Street just ups the ante from the first film, and I am just so proud to be a part of it.

The Equalizer Trailer: Not Exactly a Happy Ending

Denzel Washington is back with the director who guided him through those Training Day quotes that got Washington that Oscar. Antoine Fuqua has reunited with Washington for The Equalizer, and the film’s first full length trailer has premiered.

Washington plays the character that is based on the '80s TV classic about a man who has left his life as a black ops commando to work on the quieter side of things.

But, when he sees a wrong -- the Equalizer has a hard time just walking away, as you can see from the above trailer.

The Equalizer takes place in Boston. Washington’s character takes an interest in a young girl (Chloe Grace Moretz), and when she is mistreated, he gets revenge. The only issue, the recipient of his wrath… is the Russian mob. Something tells us they won't go quietly into the night.

Look for The Equalizer in theaters September 26.

And in the meantime, watch Training Day online and see what Fuqua and Washington can do!

22 Jump Street Review: Just Do The Same Thing!

$

When 21 Jump Street hit movie screens, its success and the incredible quality of the action comedy surprised many. But, for those who have followed writer-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s careers, we would expect nothing less than the brilliance they’ve continually brought. Now that 22 Jump Street has arrived, as told to us in our Lord and Miller exclusive interview, the surprise factor is gone.

Channing Tatum Jonah Hill Stars in 22 Jump Street

With Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, no one expected much from a little children’s book being brought to the screen, and Lord and Miller hit it out of the bark. Then, they did 21 Jump Street and people thought, “Wow, these guys are good.” Then, The LEGO Movie arrived and people are now putting Lord and Miller movies on their calendars.

Toss in the fact that this is a sequel (something they’ve never done before), and the anticipation level could not be higher -- which is a double-edged sword because of the aforementioned fact that they can’t catch anyone by surprise.

We hate to say it, but Lord and Miller are wrong. They have surprised us immensely with this film, and it’s because of how incredibly self-aware they are in clueing the audience into the fact that they keenly know what they’re doing by actually making a sequel.

Heck, they even have Ice Cube’s Captain Dickson tell our favorite police duo repeatedly when they get off course, “Just do the same thing!”

22 Jump Street features the return of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as Schmidt and Jenko, and this time out, the boys head undercover to college to bust a drug ring before someone else dies. Sure, that sounds familiar from those 21 Jump Street quotes

But, there is much that is different as this isn’t just a movie making fun of movies that are based on TV shows. This is a sequel having a blast with being a sequel. And as sequels do, they up the ante, and Lord and Miller have done that by adding a real emotional strain on the partnership/friendship between our two leads. There’s a love interest for each which causes a rift. Sure, Hill’s is a girl (Amber Stevens as Maya) and Tatum's is a man crush, his football team and his fraternity.

There are also twists in that the culprit isn’t as black and white as it was in the first movie. The guys question their mission. They question each other and, most importantly, they question what it is they’re doing this second time around. That all adds up to some surprisingly insightful and hilarious moments throughout.

22 Jump Street also plays into that idea that so many think that college is the best days of our lives. It’s the time to find ourselves. It’s a time to explore new things and be crazy. And most importantly, later life doesn’t allow that.

But, believe it or not, there is a message in Lord and Miller’s film and that is that the best moments in our lives are the ones we’re living.

Comedy does come from all corners, teased in that awesome 22 Jump Street red band trailer. There are stereotypes that are busted apart for humor. The institution of the sequel is fodder, as we said. But, our 22 Jump Street review has to point out that the humor this time out also greatly comes from supporting players.

The Lucas twins steal scenes from our leads as their across-the-hall neighbors. Hill’s girlfriend Maya has an insane roommate played by Jillian Bell who is simply explosively uproarious. Ice Cube even gets to riff even more than the first one, proving he is the most unlikely of funnymen. And lest we forget the return of Ron Riggle and Dave Franco, who literally give us the last laugh.

Also, might we report that the self-awareness of 22 Jump Street doesn’t end with the plot. Stay for the closing credits as they may be among the best of all time. And lastly, if you find yourself heading home after seeing the movie, feeling the uncontrollable urge to watch 21 Jump Street online, you are not alone!

The Signal Review: One Fine Frequency

$
0
0

The best way to prepare our readers for the thunderous shock to the system that is The Signal is for us to not reveal anything more than the bare necessities.

As teased in The Signal trailer, Nic (Brenton Thwaites), Haley (Olivia Cooke) and Jonah (Beau Knapp) are driving cross country to take Haley where she sadly needs to go and that is away from her boyfriend Nic. He is none too happy about her relocation. Along the way, they keep getting this electronic signal and it has got Nic and Jonah utterly transfixed -- and aggravated. Every time it comes through, they hook up their computers and try to find the source.

Brenton Thwaites Stars The Signal

As they drive through the American Southwest, The Signal gets stronger. Although Haley is not thrilled, she agrees to let her boyfriend and his BFF take them a little off their planned route to find it. That was not necessarily their best idea ever.

Director William Eubank has truly revealed himself as a true talent with the arrival of The Signal. He co-wrote the film with his brother Carlyle and David Frigerio, and their story is like an electric onion. As each layer gets peeled away, you get shocked and yet the draw to keep peeling is insatiable. It is a master class in storytelling meets having a director who keenly knows his vision.

That could also explain the presence of a film veteran like Laurence Fishburne. The man must have been impressed as soon as he read the script.

You won’t hear much about his role from us, but just know that he is about as simultaneously calmly comforting and terrifying as a human being can get. We should not be surprised by the performance of the Oscar nominee, but the thing about his turn in The Signal is that we can never truly figure him out. That is until the film’s final reveal -- which we have to say, came out of left field in the most believable and jaw-dropping of ways.

Thwaites, Cooke and Knapp are a compelling trio. But, it is Thwaites who explodes off the screen. He is a bottle of human traits that are a mix of hope, regret, inquisitiveness, love and loss that is not an easy card to play for any actor. Yet, he nails it. And Cooke continues her strong year (after seeing Cooke in The Quiet Ones she is clearly one to watch).

Our The Signal review has to let the world know that the film is an announcement of the talent of filmmaker Eubank. We look forward to more from him and hope that The Signal is simply the beginning of his fine frequency for filmmaking.

Laurence Fishburne in The Signal

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Review: Twice the Heart, Twice the Adventure

$

How to Train Your Dragon is, no question, a beloved animated film. The heart and soul of the film was the touching relationship between Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and the dragon Toothless. In How to Train Your Dragon 2, everyone on Hiccup’s island of Berk has a dragon and it is because of Hiccup and his ability to open their eyes to see a former foe as friend.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Main Poster

With that combative relationship between humans and dragons now compassionate, where does that leave the drama (and heart) for the sequel?

It comes from the most unexpected and surprising place. We meet Hiccup’s mom Valka (Cate Blanchett, a blessing of an addition to the cast) -- as seen in this How to Train Your Dragon 2 clip.

Filmmaker Dean DeBlois lets us know where she’s been for two decades, living in a sanctuary for dragons trying to keep them safe from the evil Drago (Djimon Hounsou) who has been kidnapping dragons and building an army. Looks like Hiccup’s apple does not fall far from the tree!

Adding in Valka does several things. It gives Hiccup some history. It shows that the citizens of Berk and their dragons now have something to fear and they have to come together to fight. And it also, believe it or not, slightly darkens the tone as the stakes and the costs are higher in How to Train Your Dragon 2 than in How to Train Your Dragon. And that is never a bad thing for a sequel, much less the middle chapter in a planned trilogy.

DeBlois is clearly heading somewhere special with this series. He has always imagined it as more than one movie. So, the fact that the first film was such a hit guarantees that we will be able to see the fullness of his vision when it comes to this great epic tale of humans and dragons.

There is plenty of action, and visually, it is a journey that feels like flying on the back of a dragon -- high above the earth. In that vein, we cannot recommend enough witnessing it in 3D. Not only is it an emotional, humorous ride, but How to Train Your Dragon 2 is also a visual marvel.

All the old favorites from the first film are back and as good, if not better, than in the original. Of particular note is Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut. She is one tough cookie, as you recall when you watch How to Train Your Dragon online. But, when she sees new addition Eret (Kit Harrington), she turns to utter mush.

How ti Train Your Dragon 2 Hiccup Family

And we cannot say enough about Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson. The camaraderie between Stoick and Gobber pops off the screen even more in the second film. And with the introduction of Blanchett into the mix, she brings a familial feel to the film that is even higher than the first time around.

Our How to Train Your Dragon 2 review also has to point out that it compellingly sets things up for a third film where Hiccup will have grown exponentially from where we first met him at the beginning of How to Train Your Dragon.

That’s what is so special about this series in general. Whether it's an individual character like Hiccup (or his father), or even the movie as a whole, growth is the ultimate goal.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 achieves that on numerous levels.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Featurette: What Happened Between 2 Movies?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set to invade theaters July 11 and it picks up 10 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

So, what happened between those two movies?

20th Century Fox has released a featurette that brilliantly gets us up to date on how we got from there to here… and it’s not pretty.

As we learned in that first Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer, the Simian Flu is blamed for bringing the human population to the brink of extinction. Gary Oldman’s character has advocated a full-out war on the ape population as a way to ensure that the flu itself becomes extinct.

Of course we all know that the flu began in James Franco’s lab and has nothing to do with those simians at all!

The above featurette is truly fascinating and we suspect it will be the beginning of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, or at least included at some point to catch audiences up on the goings-on of this world.

Watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes online and get truly prepared for the Dawn.

It Takes Place 10 Years After Rise

As everyone knows, a good father is so important in the productive upbringing of a child. Therefore, these terrible movie dads should be completely shunned. But, we adore them because they are so good at being bad.

We present 17 of the absolute worst movie dads that we have seen in recent movie memory. So, who makes the list?

You have to know that the man who gave us some unforgettable Star Wars quotes is on the list! He’s pretty awful, what with cutting off his son’s arm and launching an all-out war on his children’s friends.

Watch The Shining online and Jack Nicholson following his kid with an ax makes him pretty darn evil.

Oh, and look for one bad dad when you watch The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King online. I mean, burning your son alive?!

Where to start? How about launching an all-out invasion to destroy a rebellion led by your daughter. Then there's that whole cutting off your son's hand bit. Sure, he may redeem himself at the end (of the third movie!), but Darth Vader is just the worst dad.

According to sources who claim to have seen Warner Bros. and D.C. Comics’ plans for Comic-Con, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is just the beginning of the superhero roll-out for the studio. For an institution that has been thought of as playing catch-up with Disney and Marvel, they sure have gotten there… and fast!

According to the new site started by a Hollywood insider, NikkiFinke.com, Warner Bros. and DC Comics are going to make quite the splash at this year’s Comic-Con, which starts next month in San Diego (Movie Fanatic will be there to bring you all the action).

We’ve heard about Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice being a set-up for a Justice League movie and that appears to be the case. What else appears to be true is that Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman will be getting her own movie, coming July 2017.

And a Ryan Reynolds-less Green Lantern will be pairing up with the Flash for Christmas 2017.

To close out this run, we have a true sequel to Man of Steel!

Weekend Movie Preview: June 13, 2014

This time out, the weekend movie preview is all about the sequel. How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 22 Jump Street land after months of anticipation.

And lest we forget, a wildly original sci-fi thriller starring Laurence Fishburne also hits theaters this weekend, The Signal.

22 Jump Street: Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back as Schmidt and Jenko, and believe it or not, they are better than ever. Filmmakers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have crafted a sequel that is so bloody self-aware, it is brilliant.

As we report in our 22 Jump Street review, everyone involved has simultaneously crafted a sequel that makes fun of sequels and manages to forge a movie that stands all on its own in terms of plot, drama and emotional development. It is one impressive -- and hilarious -- piece of work.

How to Train Your Dragon 2: Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless are back, and this time out, peace rules supreme in Berk as dragons and humans are loving each other. Then, as Hiccup expands his world, he discovers a man named Drago (Djimon Hounsou) who is collecting dragons to build an army. Looks like that peace in Berk will not last long.

The entire cast ups the game from the first film, as we stated in our How to Train Your Dragon 2 review, and new additions Kit Harrington, Hounsou and Cate Blanchett -- as Hiccup's mom -- are all welcome additions.

The Signal: The less you know about The Signal, the better. Let's just say this... it is a stunning sci-fi thriller that will have you wondering what is real and what lies in the minds of the characters. When a trio of twenty-somethings goes across the Southwest searching for the source of a signal, they're going to wish they hadn't.

Marvel Studios (and Walt Disney Pictures) has released a TV spot for their highly anticipated superhero debut feature Guardians of the Galaxy.

The August 1-arriving flick introduces the world to a quintet of the most unlikely of intergalactic heroes, and the film’s latest teaser celebrates that fact with a spot impeccably entitled “Characters.”

They certainly are a series of characters, as we’ve seen with the recent release of those character posters – our favorite is the one with Groot and Rocket Raccoon

The Guardians of the Galaxy are Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel (voice of Groot), Bradley Cooper (voice of Rocket Raccoon) and Dave Bautista.

The flick also features some top tier talent in Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro and Karen Gillan.

22 Jump Street Edges Out How to Train Your Dragon 2: Weekend Box Office Report

It was thought that in the battle of the sequels, 22 Jump Street versus How to Train Your Dragon 2, that it would be close. Turns out, it wasn’t really that close at all. 22 Jump Street scored a decisive win by coming in first with $60 million to How to Train Your Dragon 2’s $50 million.

22 Jump Street Stars Channing Tatum Jonah Hill.

Both movies rode waves of fantastic reviews (check out our 22 Jump Street review and How To Train Your Dragon 2 review) and Hollywood is cheering the fact that the top two movies combined to make Tinseltown $110 million in one weekend. That is impressive.

What’s fascinating is that we are kind of surprised it wasn’t the other way around.

22 Jump Street was rated “R” (thus a smaller potential audience) and opened in almost 1,000 less theaters. Plus, How to Train Your Dragon 2 had the family movie audience and that 3D increased ticket price -- although $50 million in its opening weekend is still fantastic.

Third place belonged to Angelina Jolie in Maleficent. Its third week in theaters brought in $19 million, to bring its cume to $163.5 million.

Fourth place belonged to Tom Cruise’s actioner, Edge of Tomorrow, and its $16.2 million. And closing out the top five is last week’s number one, The Fault in Our Stars. The Shailene Woodley-starring romance-weeper racked up another $15.7 million. That’s $81.7 million in two weeks!

In other news, we finally have our first domestic $200 million movie of the summer and it’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film landed in sixth place and now has banked a total of $205.9 million.

Box office top 10:

1. 22 Jump Street, $60 million
2. How to Train Your Dragon 2, $50 million
3. Maleficent, $19 million
4. Edge of Tomorrow, $16.2 million
5. The Fault in Our Stars, $15.7 million
6. X-Men: Days of Future Past, $9.5 million
7. Godzilla, $3.2 million
8. A Million Ways to Die in the West, $3.1 million
9. Neighbors, $2.5 million
10. Chef, $2.3 million

Tammy Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Hits the Road, Road Hits Back!

The first full-length trailer for Tammy has arrived! What was teased in the first Tammy trailer, is greatly expanded in this latest teaser starring Melissa McCarthy.

Those initial spots had us thinking this was a nice vehicle for McCarthy, but this expanded look has us seeing much more to this comedy that is also the directorial debut of her husband, Ben Falcone.

Tammy is not having a good day. Her car dies on her (after she has an altercation with a deer). She gets fired (by her boss, played by her husband!) and she comes home to a husband who is cheating. So, she picks up her mom (played by Susan Sarandon) and hits the road.

The road trip comedy looks to have more depth to it than a McCarthy situational comedy flick -- which is good, because this woman who stole scenes with her Bridesmaids quotes is worth so much more than a one-note laugh-fest.

Speaking of that hilarious movie, why not watch Bridesmaids online and see how the world first met McCarthy.

Star Wars Episode VII: Harrison Ford to Miss 8 Weeks of Filming

As Movie Fanatic reported last week, Harrison Ford broke his ankle on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII after losing a battle with a door on the Millennium Falcon. Today, we’re learning that the injury is much more severe than initially thought. For one, it will require surgery. And that means that Ford will miss about eight weeks of production.

Ford had fun with the injury and posted the following photo!

Harrison Ford Injury Photo

Producers have said that the injury will not affect the filming schedule and, more importantly, will have no influence over the release date of Star Wars: Episode VII on December 18, 2015.

But, what this did do was confirm the fact that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie!

All this excitement about Ford and original cast members Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher joining the Star Wars: Episode VII cast was dampened with the news of this injury. But, the bottom line is that as long as Ford’s return to Han Solo isn’t minimized or that release date isn't altered, then everything is OK.

We just wish Ford a successful and speedy recovery. Those broken bones are no fun!

You think you know the story of Dracula? Think again! Universal Pictures has released the first two posters from Dracula Untold as well as our first still of star Luke Evans as the titular character.

Universal is returning to its hey-day as the studio that put out the original movie monsters, from Frankenstein to Wolfman to our favorite night crawler -- Count Dracula.

The film stars Luke Evans as Dracula and is a period piece that promises an origins story that was only teased in previous Dracula movies -- even Bram Stoker's Dracula!

Evans plays Prince Vlad (as those who know… Dracula was first known as Vlad the Impailer), and he is a man who will go to the ends of the earth to protect his people and his family. But, unfortunately, he takes it too far when he makes a dark pact to secure the peace. What it means… is he will live forever -- as a vampire.

Look for Dracula Untold in theaters October 17 (in time for Halloween!). It also stars Need for Speed star Dominic Cooper.
