Sabotage DVD Review: Arnold Schwarzenegger Returns to Form

$

Slowly, but surely, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been building himself back into an action movie star and it has come to full fruition with the arrival of Sabotage on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Sabotage DVD

Schwarzenegger is the leader of an elite DEA task force who has had incredible success taking down the world’s worst drug lords. As the film begins they score their biggest arrest to date.

Great news, except one by one in the following days, Schwarzenegger’s crew begins being killed off. Our leader must work with a local cop (Olivia Williams) to get to the bottom of these murders before everyone is gone. Oh, and did we mention that ten million dollars is missing from the big bust? Check out our Sabotage exclusive trailer for more!

As we stated in our theatrical Sabotage review, this is a fun ride and it is no surprise as it is from writer-director David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch, and the upcoming Brad Pitt-starring Fury). And it’s not surprising that a filmmaker of his talents scored a cast that includes not only one of the biggest action stars in the world, but also Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard , Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway and Mireille Enos.

There are twists and turns throughout with a gritty feel that is reminiscent of Ayer’s other films. Given the final twist in the movie, that you honestly don’t see coming, having the bonus features include a series of alternate endings is a great joy and utter surprise.

Seeing how this story could have ended in a multitude of ways shows the strength of the story as a whole and also in many ways, shows that Schwarzenegger -- even after all these years -- is still up for having some serious fun.

The deleted scenes from Sabotage are interesting, but it’s easy to see why Ayer cut them.

And the only other bonus feature is Making Sabotage, and this is a terrific behind-the-scenes doc that for fans of Ayer and Schwarzenegger shows why these two were terrific working together. It’s fascinating to see Ayer work his movie magic with the man who knows a thing or two about making action work -- which is largely why Sabotage works in the first place.

Check out the film right now and watch Sabotage online.

One thing we did not see in that Kingsman: The Secret Service trailer was a man who is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VII, Mr. Mark Hamill! But today 20th Century Fox has released a still from the Colin Firth-starring film that features the man who is Luke Skywalker.

Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, Kingsman: The Secret Service follows an ultra-below-the-radar agency who handles the international messes that no one else can.

The film lands October 24 and also stars Taron Egerton as a young man who is on the wrong side of the tracks that meets Firth, who sees something in him and believes he could be the next member of the Kingsman.

It also stars Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice Surprises Comic-Con!

They said they weren’t coming, but with the 75th anniversary of Batman and Warner Bros. having the pop culture stage all to themselves this Saturday morning at Comic-Con, we should not be surprised that Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is here!

Zack Snyder took the stage in Hall H and revealed 3D versions of the Batman photo and the Superman photo we’ve seen before, but they never looked this good. Then, it faded into the Dawn of Justice logo, which we hope to have officially from Warner’s soon!

“A teeny little thing,” Snyder said as he introduced a clip from the movie to the utterly fanatical audience.

We see Ben Affleck as Batman standing on a Gotham roof in the rain. He moves a tarp, which reveals the Bat Signal. As he removes it and it illuminates the sky, the camera pans to the sky and there is… Superman! Henry Cavill’s eyes darken, as he is clearly none too pleased. Then, it fades into the logo.

Hey, it’s something and tells us that this thing is way on the right track. It looks a bit Frank Miller and is incredibly dark, which also works in the biggest of ways.

Then, Affleck, Cavill and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) show up on the stage to thunderous applause. We see the character posters, including Wonder Woman who is utterly warriored-up!

We’re sure these will all be online soon and we’ll bring them to you, but until then, we had to dish the details of the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice surprise Comic-Con appearance!

As part of the 20th Century Fox presentation, Book of Life hit the stage with star Channing Tatum and producer Guillermo del Toro and showed off some impressive footage beyond what we've seen in that Book of Life trailer

But, stealing the show was the artist who has been most known for his hit song, Just a Friend -- Biz Markie. The song is featured throughout Book of Life and as Markie took the stage of Hall H, he got Tatum to bust some dance moves and sing along to the classic.

Book of Life also stars Christina Applegate, Zoe Saldana, Ice Cube (he of those awesome Ride Along quotes) and Ron Perlman.

Look for it October 17.

Warcraft is one of the more anticipated movies of early 2016 and director Duncan Jones took to the Hall H stage here at Comic-Con and teased the audience with a first look at the film’s logo and we have the video below.

The film is based on one of the most popular video games of all time. Jones presented footage from the film that he has shot so far and from this early look, the man behind Moon and Source Code was the perfect choice to bring this beloved game to life.

Jones tells the crowd that the film is an origins story on the world of Azeroth and the conflict that arose between orcs and humans. He is also clearly thrilled to be working with Legendary Pictures.

“This has been a dream of theirs for a long time and I'm in a unique place and lucky to work with Legendary and Thomas Tull to make a Warcraft movie," Jones said.

Stay tuned for more on this film as the footage arrives online.

As part of the Legendary Pictures panel at this year’s Comic-Con that gave us our Warcraft logo, we were also treated to news about the future of Godzilla.

Godzilla Logo

Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull took to the Hall H stage and promptly introduced a video message from Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, who has just been announced to be working on a Star Wars spin-off next and then it appears… Godzilla 2.

The audience was than shown a “Classified Monarch Footage” video and it had a true 1960s feel and featured President Kennedy discussing current threats to the country. As he finishes, a shadow of a pterodactyl appears with the following phrases:

Codename: Rodan:
Close-up of a giant month creature is shown.

Codename: Mothra:
A shadowy dragon figure appears.

Codename: Ghidorah
Then, the text “THREAT ASSESSMENT: CONFLICT INEVITABLE” appears.

Next text sent the crowd into a frenzy: “Let Them Fight.”

Then, the following comment appeared on the screen, thus announcing the coming of Godzilla 2.

“Edwards will direct the sequel to Godzilla after he finishes his installment in the expanded Star Wars franchise.”

As part of the Mad Max: Fury Road presentation at Comic-Con, Warner Bros. released a quartet of character posters that put the spotlight on the film's stars including Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.

From what we can tell from those early Mad Max: Fury Road photos, Hardy is the perfect choice to succeed Mel Gibson, who made the role famous in the Australian indie film that became a cult classic, Mad Max

George Miller is directing the flick, just as he did the last three Mad Max movies.

Ant-Man was first off the bat for Comic-Con and Marvel as they began their annual presentation that has become the must-see event of the entire fest. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was joined by Ant-Man stars Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, to the utter delight of the thousands in attendance.

First thing they confirmed arrived when Corey Stoll arrived and said that he’d be playing Darren Cross, also known as Yellowjacket and as Evangeline Lilly takes the stage, it’s announced that her character will be Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Douglas’ Hank Pym.

Then director Peyton Reed took the stage, who of course joined the project when Edgar Wright left.

Rudd and Douglas are each beyond thrilled to be in an enormous movie with huge special effects and Rudd even admitted that he is “popping his Comic-Con cherry”

They showed off a bit of footage (that we hope will be online soon) that features some incredible special effects and has us thinking this summer 2015 release will keep Marvel's hot streak going.

Avengers Age of Ultron at Comic-Con: Cast Shows Off Footage!

Marvel head Kevin Feige finished his Ant-Man presentation and then turned to Avengers: Age of Ultron. He said that Joss Whedon was laid up in bed recovering from knee surgery, so he could not make the trip. But Feige said that there were a “whole lot of people who did.”

Avengers: Age of Ultron Logo

Taking the stage were Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo (who was greeted with chants of “Hulk, Hulk, Hulk!”), Chris Evans, Cobie Smulders, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and of course, Robert Downey Jr., who arrived and threw roses into the crowd! And then, the crowd was treated to the Vision, Paul Bettany, and Ultron himself, James Spader.

Someone asked Hemsworth if there was something he’d like them to do with Thor in this one. His reply: “Turn him into a woman,” which of course Marvel did last week -- at least in the comics!

Among the details they shared was Evans talked about Captain America and how his character is much more comfortable in the modern world, and how in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he is just looking for his place in the world. And with SHIELD destroyed (at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier), the Avengers are all he has left.

Spader is at Comic-Con for the second time, after making his debut last year for The Blacklist. But, the response to this Marvel panel at Hall H is beyond anything he could possibly have imagined.

"I used to think that life could never get weird or crazy enough for me. But this is the weirdest, craziest place," Spader said.

Scarlett Johansson could not be there because she is expecting a baby, but she sent a video message that had the crowd cheering. She talked about being so glad to be back with this great cast and that she wishes she could be in San Diego.

Feige then unveiled the first footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron and it features the entire gang just hanging out, completely out of their costumes. Each is trying to lift Thor’s hammer to no avail. This is just a great and classic Whedon moment of humor!

From Evans to Ruffalo to Don Cheadle, no one can lift it -- although Cap moves it a little! Then, a noise distracts. It’s Ultron and a giant robot enters the room. He says, “There’s only one path to peace. Your extinction!”

Then, the footage goes into a montage of great looking scenes including tanks rolling in the snow, Banner in a straightjacket, Black Widow in her new costume and Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster armor (teasing a fight between Hulk and Iron Man).

Then it’s a shot of Stark in what appears to be complete desolation. The Avengers lie around him completely disengaged.

Downey, clearly thrilled with the reaction, then addressed the crowd. “The thing about Marvel is that they’ve always got the next thing up their sleeve,” he said.

Thanos himself appeared as Josh Brolin walked on the stage. It’s just for a hello. Don’t worry, people, he’s very present in Guardians of the Galaxy!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Announced: When Will It Premiere?

During the Marvel Studios presentation in Hall H, studio head Kevin Feige concluded their allotted time slot at Comic-Con for 2014 with a promise for the future. Guardians of the Galaxy does not even arrive until August 1, but early reaction has been so intense about the film (including from us), we’ve got news that the sequel is on its way.

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Guardians of the Galaxy

As the Avengers: Age of Ultron Comic-Con presentation was over, Feige mentioned that someone wanted to say something from London -- and it was Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and star Chris Pratt.

“How much trouble would I get in if I just told them that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is coming out,” Gunn asked.

Then the logo of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was announced for July 28, 2017, which is basically the current film's logo with a "2" next to it!.

“It’s time the kids took over the candy store.”

After what we have seen in the first film, that July 2017 date is circled in pen for Movie Fanatic! We’ll have more on Guardians of the Galaxy all next week.

Crimson Peak Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro Talks Being His "Happiest"

You know it’s a really awesome Comic-Con if Guillermo del Toro is here and talking about two movies -- Book of Life (which he produced) and Crimson Peak (which he wrote and directed).

We caught up with the legendary filmmaker for an exclusive video interview where he talked about what we can expect from Crimson Peak, the horror-thriller that stars Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Tom Hiddleston.

Del Toro also talked about what a story has to say to him for him to get behind it with his uber-busy schedule. Heck, he just announced he’s got Pacific Rim 2 that’s in pre-production!

The auteur must be beyond moved to add a project to his list, and there was something truly special, del Toro told us, about Crimson Peak.

“The two things that I want from things I get involved in are stories that have great world creation or great humanity or, if possible, both,” del Toro said. “I think that’s why I love Crimson Peak the most -- right now I’m the happiest -- because it combines a world creation, great characters and story.”

Guillermo del Toro Crimson Peak Set

Crimson Peak lands in theaters on October 16, 2015 and is a gothic horror story from the master of such tales. It follows what happens to an aspiring author after a family tragedy as she is torn between two loves -- her childhood friend and an outsider with a mysterious past. As she tries to get away from the horrors of her past, she finds herself in a house that breathes, bleeds and remembers.

Kevin Feige Dishes Future of Marvel Cinematic Universe

As soon as discussions began for a sequel to The Avengers, Marvel head Kevin Feige knew the man who gave us those The Avengers quotes, Joss Whedon, would have the perfect plan for a follow-up.

Marvel Studios Movie Logo

“What could you do? Joss was just legitimately like, ‘What do you mean what do you do? You do one thing. It’s Ultron,’” Feige told Movie Fanatic as he was set to launch his Marvel Comic-Con presentation.

Feige went on to explain why Ultron made sense as the next step for the superhero collective in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“There’s certain images and story beats from Ultron’s appearance in the comics that we’ve loved for so long. Also because it’s now the culmination of phase two. So every choice that was made in Iron Man 3, The Dark World, and Winter Soldier, was all to make those movies as good as we could make them,” he said.

“But, also knowing that it means things would be very, very different at the start of Avengers 2 than they were at the end of Avengers.”

Avengers Age of Ultron Concept Art Poster

One of the things fans have long been anticipating is when the villainous Thanos would appear. We caught a glimpse of him at the end of The Avengers, but it took until now to see much more of the Josh Brolin-portrayed character in Guardians of the Galaxy.

When it comes to Thanos and when to bring him in, Feige states why he and his team took the route they did.

“In Avengers you didn’t see anything. You saw the back of his throne and you saw his turn into camera three-quarter smirk. We wanted Ronan to be the bad guy,” Feige said of Guardians of the Galaxy.

“We wanted to focus on the creation of the Guardians team itself, so we didn’t want to spend too much time with Thanos. But, we wanted to showcase that there’s a guy behind the guy behind the guy behind the guy -- the emperor in Empire Strikes Back to Darth Vader.”

But will he be in an Avengers movie, perhaps the third one, or even in Avengers: Age of Ultron? “He’s not a part of Avengers 2,” Feige admitted.

“I think Thanos does what he wants and shows up where he wants to. And I’m not going to tell him otherwise, so you don’t know exactly.”

Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy, we marveled at how real, emotionally powerful, and even funny the CG characters are -- speaking of Groot, Rocket Raccoon and also Thanos.

Guardians of the Galaxy Zoe Saldana Chris Pratt

“Utilizing technology is what all these movies are about. I would say that the technology, it’s not just a vocal performance. It’s a facial performance. Like Mark Ruffalo with Hulk. It’s not just Mark Ruffalo with Hulk. It’s not just him grunting, it’s him acting. It’s his face,” Feige said.

“You want a great performance. And the reason we were comfortable moving forward with seeing as much Thanos as we do in Guardians is because we had a great actor who was willing to put the dots on his face and do the performance.”

And yes, that means Ultron too in The Avengers sequel.

James Spader is more than just the voice. He was on set for every single one of his scenes in those mo-cap rigs. That, again, was another reason we were ultimately comfortable pulling the trigger on Ultron. Yes, we liked him. Yes, we talked about him a lot. The fear always was that there are a lot of robots. There are a lot of robots in the world,” Feige said and laughed.

“There are a lot of robots in movies. How do we make a different one? One, you have Joss Whedon write dialogue for him. And two, you have James Spader bring him to life.”

When Feige talks about these new people that Marvel is introducing, such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange, how does he look over the catalog that is Marvel comics and decide who he wants to spotlight? Does it have to do with the stories that are already out there? Does it have to do with what people want and awareness of who these characters are?

“Ultimately [it] comes down to what do we think would be cinematic. With Guardians we very much wanted to go to the other side of the cosmic universe. There’s an amazing amount of outer space-based storylines in our comics and we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of that in the other movies. And it felt like time with Guardians of the Galaxy being our tenth Marvel Studios MCU movie to do that,” Feige said.

Kevin Feige Picture

“We’d earned the right to say, ‘Let’s bring a bunch of characters nobody’s heard of.’ If it was just about public consciousness I’m not sure we would have done half the characters that we’ve done up to this point. But it's about what we think the public would be interested in because it's what we’re interested in as we spend two or three years working on a project.”

Feige described Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a political thriller. What can we expect Ant-Man and then Doctor Strange to mirror cinematically?

Ant-Man is a heist movie. It’s also a mentor/mentee, a hero passing the torch film, which we haven’t done before. So those are two unique elements for us in that film. With Doctor Strange it is a classic Marvel origins story, because he’s got one of the best origins ever and it’s our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural,” Feige said.

“Now, what is the definition of supernatural? It varies. We love the idea of playing with alternate dimensions. Strange in the crazy acid trip way, traveling through other dimensions and realms is something we think is very, very cool.”

The trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road has arrived to close out Comic-Con and we’d say Warner Bros. had a fantastic week here in San Diego.

Between their Wonder Woman photo reveal for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice that also brought out Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill, they scored with presentations on The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Mad Max: Fury Road and Jupiter Ascending.

Now with the arrival of the Mad Max: Fury Road trailer, they have truly triumphed the entire Comic-Con.

The trailer opens with echoes of news reports about water shortages and water wars. Then Tom Hardy speaks as Mad Max, “My world is fire and blood.” Nailed it.

Director George Miller is back in the director’s chair, just as he was for every single Mad Max movie -- and for fans, and judging by this trailer, that is an incredibly good thing.

Mad Max: Fury Road also stars Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult and lands May 15, 2015.

The first teaser for Mockingjay Part 1 is here and it shows Katniss completely battle-scarred. And she is so overwhelmed by what she is seeing as she lands in District 13 and sees a legion of survivors who have gathered to take down the government of the Capitol, that it is no given that she will be their leader.

She is a leader in theory -- everyone was rallied by her performance in the Hunger Games. But as we see in the below teaser, even President Coin (Julianne Moore) does not feel she is up for the role as leader of the rebellion.

But, when she is asked if she will fight with them, she answers quickly, "I will." Oh, and by the way, that Mockingjay symbol, it's now illegal!

We've seen teasers before, in the form of President Snow's Unity address, but this is the first time we've seen Katniss in a Mockingjay Part 1 video! Look for the flick to land November 21 and greatly expand the world of Panem that we've seen previously in the films.

Horns: Daniel Radcliffe's Love of Dark Movies Not “Going to End Soon”

When it came to making a truly dark film, teased in that Horns trailer, star Daniel Radcliffe told us at Comic-Con that he had no hesitation. “I definitely didn’t have any reservations, in terms of the darkness of the movie. Even Harry Potter had quite a lot of darkness in it,” Radcliffe said.

Daniel Radcliffe Comic-Con Horns

“Doing things like Equus and The Cripple of Inishmaan and Kill Your Darlings, I like getting involved in that kind of stuff.”

Radcliffe was first drawn to the book by Joe Hill. And the movie of it was something he pursued -- relentlessly.

“It’s an amazing book, and the adaptation of the book into a script was fantastic. I like things that take an idea that everyone can relate to in some way -- and not necessarily being accused of murdering your girlfriend but the idea of being an outsider and experiencing loneliness and coping with loss -- and finding a really original, crazy way to deal with that topic,” Radcliffe said.

“People talk about this film as being fantasy or horror. But, I’ve always seen it as being magical realism, in the sense that most of the world is very, very grounded in reality, apart from this one fantastical thing that is happening in the middle of it.”

Of course what he means is that after being accused of the brutal murder of his girlfriend in Horns, Radcliffe’s character grows, well, horns! Is he the devil and how does one go about preparing for such a role?

“It’s a challenging part and there’s a lot to mine. I broke down the script, the way that I would approach anything. And then, you have the more superficial but fun challenges of the prosthetics, which is mainly a challenge of staying still, for me,” he said and laughed.

After his turn in The Woman in Black and now with Horns, one might think that Radcliffe is purposely setting on a course of only making dark films, but it is not that simple.

“I do like the genre because anything can happen in it. As long as you play by your own rules, you can do whatever you’d like. It’s not an intentional thing that I’m picking all of this really dark work, but I guess I enjoy it,” Radcliffe said.

“People do talk about Horns, The Woman in Black and Frankenstein as being things that are all of one genre, but they actually aren’t. The Woman in Black is the most traditional horror film you can get, and Horns is the least. And with a film like Frankenstein, it more falls into the adventure category than anything else. I can’t explain my attraction to dark material, but I don’t think it’s going to end soon.”

With his experience on the Harry Potter films, Radcliffe is all too familiar with the sometimes thankless task of bringing a beloved book to the big screen.

Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings came out at the same time, initially, and a few other famous book-to-movie transitions have adjusted people to the idea that, as wonderful as all books are and as much as we’d like to put everything in, things do have to move around and shift slightly,” Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe assured fans of the book by Hill that they should be beyond excited for the film version to land from director Alexandre Aja.

“The tone of the film remained absolutely true to the tone of the book. I think some filmmakers would have looked at all of the different genres and styles and gone, ‘Okay, for the sake of ease, we’ll just make it horror, and take out the comedy and romance,’ to make it simpler. Alex never shied away from any of that.”

For those familiar with the book, there is a whole lot of symbolism in it, and on many levels. The titular horns are merely the tip of the iceberg. “I’m not a religious person, but I have always been fascinated by the mythology and imagery in all religions, particularly Christianity,” Radcliffe said.

“Weirdly, when we (Radcliffe and Alex) first met, we had a discussion and I was worried that I came off a little bit creepy with my obsession with the devil as a character in literature. He is traditionally this very, very charismatic character. So, I was very excited to play him.”

Getting to perform with all those snakes only enhanced things for Radcliffe. “The snakes were awesome. I had a six foot long python wrapped around me for the last half of the film, which is the best prop any actor can ever have. There’s no acting required when you’re wearing a snake,” Radcliffe said and laughed.

“There’s a lot of symbolism that got built into the movie. One of my favorite things is that all of the driver’s registration plates in the movie are bible verses, which relate very specifically towards the characters.”

This is Radcliffe’s first Comic-Con, and we had to ask if he could dress up in cosplay as anyone, who would it be? And as it turns out, he’s already done it! “I did exactly that as Spider-Man, head to toe,” Radcliffe proudly exclaimed.

He even got his photo snapped in his costume next to one of his (surprisingly) favorite movies. “I posed next to the Sharknado 2 poster, which was pretty awesome. I’m so excited about Sharknado 2. I can say that un-ironically!”

Lastly, as Radcliffe enjoys his 25th year of life, we wondered where he thought life would take him in his next 25.

“I hope that, in 25 years time, I will have a family. I would like to have directed by then, as well. That’s something I really want to do, down the line. But I just want to keep working, really,” Radcliffe said.

“Playing one part for a very long time builds up in you a desire to play as many different things as you can, so I’m really enjoying that, at the moment. So, I don’t know what it will hold, but I’m really looking forward to it.”
