Guardians of the Galaxy 2: James Gunn Dishes Thanos’ Role, Peter Quill’s Father

Judging by Guardians of the Galaxy’s record breaking box office run, it’s not a surprise that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was announced for July 28, 2017. There are several questions that immediately come to mind for the follow-up to the James Gunn instant classic. First, and foremost, who is Peter Quill’s (aka Star Lord) father?

James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy

Gunn was talking to Empire Magazine and gave us a clue on that issue, plus one other biggie – like what role will Josh Brolin’s Thanos play? “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics,” Gunn admitted. “I’ll say that much.”

In the comics, it is clear, but in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn feels there is some room to play with. “There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us,” Gunn said.

“That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

Then, there’s Thanos. We already know that he will be in Avengers: Age of Ultron (even for a bit), and he will have an even bigger role in Avengers 3, but what about Guardians of the Galaxy 2?

“He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure,” Gunn said.

“There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos… I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like.”

Lauren Bacall Dead at 89: Defined Golden Age of Hollywood

Legendary film actress Lauren Bacall has died today at the age of 89. The screen icon was a true face of the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood and was one of the rare actresses of early Tinsel Town that became as well known as her male co-stars.

The Big Sleep Humphrey Bogart Lauren Bacall

She was also famous for her work opposite Humphrey Bogart in a number of films, including Key Largo, The Big Sleep and To Have and Have Not. She appeared in dozens and dozens of films, even starring with Marilyn Monroe in How to Marry a Millionaire

She married Bogart in 1945 and was with him until his death in 1957. Bogie and Bacall are together now in heaven!

Her last great role earned her an Oscar nod and it was in Barbra Streisand’s The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996. She was part of one of our most shocking Oscar moments ever when she lost to Juliette Binoche.

We will also never forget her in Robert Altman’s 1994 effort, Pret-a-Porter.

Bacall had a massive stroke, according to a family member, this morning in her home. She died exactly one day after we lost another Hollywood legend, Robin Williams.

Let’s Be Cops Review: Hilarity With Surprising Heart

$

What is so fun about Let’s Be Cops is that what could be a one note comedy, manages to be so much more before the credits roll. Sure, Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. posing as cops and having too much fun doing it (and us watching them) is the base of this comic farce, but there are unexpected messages in Luke Greenfield’s film that make it surprisingly resonant.

Jake Johnson Damon Wayans Jr. Let's Be Cops

Johnson and Wayans are roommates and longtime best friends. They moved to Los Angeles years ago hoping to make something of their lives. Now 30, they sit in a diner at the beginning of the film and wonder, “What happened?”

Wayans is kind of living the dream. He works at a video game company, but might as well be a fly on the wall because no one listens to his ideas and he could easily just be shuffling papers. Johnson, meanwhile, is not really doing much of anything. As seen in that hilarious Let’s Be Cops red band trailer, he did make a herpes medicine commercial. But he has truly achieved little else.

Going to a costume party one night, they decide to dress up as cops using pitch-perfect uniforms Wayans had for a presentation for his dream video game. Walking down the streets of LA, they immediately realize something: People believe they really are cops. And boy, do they (and the audience) have fun with the nature of seeing fake cops tackling real trouble.

Johnson and Wayans are a comedic dream team and the New Girl stars find a whole new level of funny on the big screen with Let’s Be Cops. Their chemistry in this flick was even seen from that first Let’s Be Cops trailer, and expanded to a 90-minute comedy, their joy together is our joy. That old adage about if actors are having fun, the audience does too is never more true than with Let’s Be Cops.

Things aren’t always fun and games. When they meet an actual policeman Rob Riggle (who is fantastic as always), they get drawn into a real criminal investigation involving Andy Garcia’s shady character. But, instead of going off the rails as some comedies tend to do at this point, it all gets rolled up into the giant humor meets message that is Greenfield’s film.

Jake Johnson Damon Wayans Jr. in Let's Be Cops

Sure, you’re thinking, what kinds of messages can a silly farce about something as serious as a couple of guys illegally impersonating police officers have? Well, how about the pervading theme of being true to oneself and following one's dreams with passion instead of just being a bystander in them?

And with Johnson and Wayans embodying their characters as they do, the summer is closing with a laugh and a smile. Our Let’s Be Cops review can report that humor that still inspires (even ever so slightly) always adds up to a solid time at the movies.

Star Wars Episode VII: Harrison Ford Ready For Work!

We knew he would get better, but to hear that Harrison Ford and the Star Wars: Episode VII filming will be back at it the end of this month is still fantastic news.

Star Wars Harrison Ford is Han Solo

Ford broke his leg earlier this summer and it appears that his healing has gone well, Han Solo will suit back up and the entire Star Wars: Episode VII crew will start filming J.J. Abrams' space epic before August turns to September.

Many had wondered whether Abrams could still deliver the most highly anticipated movie in decades by its December 18, 2015 release date with Ford’s injuries.

But, with a few rewrites, production shooting shuffles and a two-week break in filming altogether, it appears that the sci-fi filmmaking genius has managed to keep his film on track and the world will see his Star Wars story in mid-December of next year!

Ford appeared at The Expendables 3 premiere last week and looked great walking the red carpet, and that surely sent a message to the world that Han Solo was back and ready to board the Millennium Falcon and take off on a whole new adventure.

The Expendables 3: Wesley Snipes & Kelsey Grammer Get “Cuckoo” With Sly

For The Expendables 3 stars Wesley Snipes and Kelsey Grammer, the chance to join the blockbuster franchise was super sweet, for vastly different reasons. “Well, it was a great opportunity to work with some of the actors I’ve always admired,” Snipes told Movie Fanatic.

Wesley Snipes The Expendables 3

“To get up close to them and see what they are like off screen versus what you see them like on screen in the characters that they portray was awesome -- also the chance to act a little crazy in this.”

You don’t get the full idea of how deliciously wacky Snipes’ Doc is from The Expendables 3 trailer, but having seen the film, trust us, he’s a nut in the best possible way. “My character Doc is a medic but he’s been away for about eight years. He was quite lonely and he had to spend a lot of time talking to himself and telling his own storylines to himself,” Snipes said.

“So he comes out cuckoo!”

For Grammer, it was a chance to be in an ensemble of action heroes in The Expendables 3 that was the true joy. See, he’s not exactly known for his action movie work over the years -- although he is also in Transformers: Age of Extinction this summer!

“I know that it spurs a kind of surprise that Kelsey Grammer would be on this ride, but I’m tougher than a lot of people think,” Grammer said and laughed.

“If you know anything about my personal life you’ll realize that. I think he was exploring an interesting part of the story to tell.”

Grammer works closely with The Expendables founder, Sylvester Stallone, in the film and their scenes are some of the best in the entire movie. Clearly, Grammer cherished those moments too. “[My character, Bonaparte] had a nice relationship. I love working with Sly. It was a presumptive joy to do that,” Grammer said.

The Expendables 3 Sylvester Stallone Kelsey Grammer

“We fleshed out Bonaparte to a point where I hope he comes back and he comes back and maybe he can kick some ass next time, because I’m ready to! I’m working at the gym. I’m lunging at people in the streets. All those punch videos you’ve been seeing -- that’s me!”

It seems that Grammer had long pined to be in a Stallone movie, but “never knew if it would happen.”

They’d see each other at parties, but movie-wise, nothing seemed to be happening. So, Grammer got proactive and asked a mutual friend, director John Herzfeld, to get him in touch with Stallone.

“I called John and said, ‘Can you get in touch with Sly that I’d like to be in that next Expendables?’ Something worked out. My agent became a bit of a pest,” Grammer said and laughed

“I had the best time with Sly. It was a revelation to me on how smart and how improvisational Sly is as well, and generous with his time, and generous with his acting. What happened was I discovered this real sense of fondness for the man. I was thrilled to be in this film with all these extraordinary actors, but mostly I was so happy to work with Sly and find out how fantastic he really is. And I’ve been impressed ever since. And I hope we do something else together.”

We have already seen one bonus feature from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 DVD that is downright mind-blowing. That’s right, we’re talking about the Peter meets his father deleted scene.

Now, we’ve got another bonus feature video for our readers from the August 19 release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 DVD.

Sony is seeking to expand the Spider-Man world, and one of those avenues they are seeking to go down is with a villainous movie centered on the Sinister Six.

Among those characters who would be highlighted in the group is Green Goblin, the Rhino and one of our favorites, Doc Ock.

In the above bonus feature that we’ve got for our readers, not only does director Marc Webb chime in on the future of Sinister Six, but so does the man who created them -- Stan Lee!

Bears DVD Review: Beary, Beary Good!

Disneynature has truly done it again, as we stated in our theatrical Bears review. And now that natural magic is coming home as Bears is released on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

Bears DVD

The same studio that brought us Earth and Chimpanzee has only honed their craft further in the years since those films and brought us a documentary about a mama bear and her two cubs and her incredible effort to keep them alive from their first days to when they’re ready to head out into the world on their own.

John C. Reilly could not have been a better choice to narrate the nature doc. And the filmmaking team of Alastair Fothergill (Earth, African Cats and what you can see when you watch Chimpanzee online) and Keith Scholey (African Cats) has brought us a story that is equally as compelling as it is entertaining and educational.

The bonus features on the Bears DVD and Blu-Ray are incredibly rich and worthy of the repeat viewing that children will demand of their favorite home videos!

The four making-of featurettes astound, especially Welcome to Alaska which follows the filmmakers as they film mama bear and her cubs as they criss-cross the Alaskan wilderness in search of food and the numerous aspects that will contribute to their survival. It is truly astonishing to see how this film was put together. The time, the patience and the luck it takes to create a nature documentary is captured in not just Welcome to Alaska, but all four of the making-of Bears featurettes.

Bears Photo

We also truly appreciated The Future For The Bears, which highlights the film’s production and its most famous visitor, conservationist Jane Goodall. A Guile to Living with Bears shows how the filmmakers learned to do what they did from the experts who mentored the documentarians and largely aided them in getting on film what we have to treasure on the Bears DVD and Blu-Ray.

And How Did They Film That? takes us inside some of the most extreme shots that filmmakers captured that makes Bears one of the best, if not the best of the Disneynature docs.

Before our Bears DVD review closes, we have to shine a light on the fact that with any purchase of the title between now and August 19, Disneynature will make a donation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to the National Park Foundation.

The Maze Runner Featurette: Introducing The Gladers

As shown in The Maze Runner trailer, Dylan O’Brien stars as a young man who awakes in an elevator that is taking him to the surface.

When he arrives, he is surrounded by a group of like-aged young men and he has no idea how he got there and where he is. Turns out, he is in a place called the Glades and in order to get out, one has to go through the enormous maze that sits on the edge of the field. One thing: no one has ever gotten out alive.

Fox has released a featurette that introduces us to those “Gladers” and it truly gives some insight into the highly anticipated film, based on the blockbuster book, that lands in theaters September 19.

Hopefully we’ll get a true “meet the characters” featurette soon from Fox, as the above video features The Maze Runner cast, O’Brien and his co-stars -- Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Ki Hong Lee and Thomas Brodie-Sangter, talking about their experience making the movie. It sounds like quite the fascinating adventure for all those involved!

Hot on the news that everyone is back at Pinewood Studios ready to resume Star Wars: Episode VII filming -- now that Harrison Ford’s leg is healed -- we’ve got a photo of Mark Hamill sporting what we like to call his Jedi beard!

Hamill is standing in front of the Star Wars: Episode VII“Now Filming” sign on the famed Pinewood Studios lot (where almost all of the James Bond movies were filmed!) and he is sporting a very wise old Jedi beard that is surely the one he will have as the older and wiser Luke Skywalker in J.J. Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack Hits Number One!

$

One of the many things we lauded in our Guardians of the Galaxy review was director James Gunn’s choices for his soundtrack. The songs were essentially songs that were found on the “Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 1” that his Peter Quill’s late mother had given him before he was abducted and taken into space.

Guardians of the Galaxy Star Lord's Tape

By presenting those songs as a soundtrack to the action, Gunn effectively brought us into the emotional journey of Quill, aka Star Lord, and also gave us some fantastic tunes. If nothing else, Quill’s mom had great taste in music.

Well, clearly everyone that made Guardians of the Galaxy a record breaking hit agrees. The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack has topped the Billboard charts and achieved a first for a film. It’s the first movie to score the top spot on the music charts without having a single new song on it!

As soon as we saw that Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack track list, we had a feeling audiences would respond. But, never in a million years did we think that the soundtrack would be a number one record! Kudos to everyone involved!

Merry Friggin’ Christmas Clip: One of Robin Williams' Final Roles

The first clip from one of Robin Williams’ final films is here!

And although it does a good job of teasing the dark comedy Merry Friggin’ Christmas, it strikes us as truly sad at what a loss it was when Robin Williams died.

Williams stars in the holiday film that lands November 7, along with Lauren Graham, Clarke Duke, Oliver Platt, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Candice Bergen and a man who was beyond thrilled about learning from the master -- Williams -- as he told us in our Joel McHale exclusive interview.

Merry Friggin’ Christmas centers on McHale’s Boyd Mitchler and his wife Luann (Graham) as they head off to spend the holidays with Boyd’s father (Mitch) and his family of odd souls.

When the film hits this holiday season, we may have to adjust these favorite Robin Williams movies, but for now, these are our 18 favorites of the late Williams.

Batman v. Superman Dawn of Justice: Ben Affleck Talks “Interesting Take”

Ben Affleck is currently shooting the sequel to Man of Steel, except for that surpriseBatman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice visit to Comic-Con. He took some time out from the Zack Snyder shoot to talk to EW and share some insight into getting ready physically and mentally for the role of Batman, and also his preparedness for the backlash once he was cast.

Batman vs. Superman Batsuit & Batmobile

In terms of getting into superhero shape, Affleck talked about how he had a vastly different physical look than he did for his previous film -- teased in this Gone Girl trailer.

"I'm right in the middle of shooting now. It's a process that I'll probably have better perspective on when I'm done. I can tell you that every time I do a role, it's the responsibility of an actor to get their physical self as close to the role as possible,” Affleck said.

“And Batman's obviously got a set of expectations that are tough. So I spent a lot of time working out. And it's a far cry from Gone Girl where my character is described as 'puffy and hungover.' I want you to know I worked equally hard at both!"

Then, there are those pesky reactions to the announcement that Affleck would be the Dark Knight. It sounds like the studio was more than ready for him to be mentally prepared, at least.

"Before I took the role, Warner Bros. gave me a bunch of past reactions to casting and said, 'Are you sure you want to get into this? This is part and parcel of these movies now. There's a lot of active fans with a lot of opinions.' To me, having been through a certain amount of that, it doesn't really… Everyone's entitled to their opinion,” Affleck said.

“I wouldn't have taken the part if I didn't trust my instincts in terms of the filmmaking. I think Chris Terrio wrote a terrific script. Zack's a great visual director. And there's an interesting take. I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think I could do it. I have the benefit of a lot of that understanding."

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice lands March 25, 2016 and also stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Bad Boys 3: Martin Lawrence Says It's Still In Works

Martin Lawrence headed to Conan last night to talk about his upcoming show Partners with Kelsey Grammer (soon to be seen in The Expendables 3), and O’Brien couldn’t let the star go without asking if that Michael Bay-directed Bad Boys 3 was still on the table.

Bad Boys Martin Lawrence Will Smith

"I believe so, yes. I just talked to Jerry Bruckheimer yesterday and he said it’s real,” Lawrence replied. “They’re working on the script, they’re getting close and it all looks good."

The first Bad Boys arrived in 1995 and brought together producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Michael Bay, Lawrence and Will Smith. It worked as an action comedy on so many levels and produced a sequel. But, there was something about that first film, that is even evident from these Bad Boys quotes, that the magic of the film was the comic and brotherly chemistry between Lawrence and Smith.

Hopefully the pair will get to do it again and we all know that Bay needs to create a quality product once again. Sure, Transformers: Age of Extinction was a huge hit, but it was one of the worst reviewed films of the year.
