Weekend Movie Preview: February 25, 2011

The crude R-rated comedy Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, will surely attract couples, but another guilty pleasure action-packed Nicolas Cage film Drive Angry will battle it out for the top spot.

Box office analysts predict Hall Pass will take the top spot, earning an estimated $16 million in 2,950 theaters.  Drive Angry isn't even estimated to come in at number two, although it may surprise with a number of action-craving men wanting to get down and dirty with the likes of Nic Cage.

The flick is estimated to bring in about $12 million in 2,290 theaters, behind Gnomeo and Juliet ($14 million) and Unknown ($13 million).

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is also set to hit theaters again this weekend with a newly edited "Director's Cut for Fans."  Not sure how much traction this will get, but it just might attract the young female population, with not much else this weekend for them to take in.

Nevertheless, this weekend will not be quite the success last weekend proved to be and will probably end up as another dismal box office weekend.

Hall Pass - A couple of married guys are granted the opportunity to  do whatever they want and sleep with whoever they want for one week by their wives.  Things get a little out of control when it's not everything they bargained for and their wives start doing the same thing.

Drive Angry - Nicolas Cage plays a man who comes back from the dead to save his granddaughter from an evil cult leader who is going to sacrifice her.  Amber Heard plays a waitress that helps him out on his journey and Billy Burke plays the cult leader who is threatening to sacrifice Cage's granddaughter.

Justin Bieber Never Say Never: The Director's Fan Cut - The widely successful and surprisingly good Justin Bieber documentary has been re-released for one week only to give his die-hard fans more insight into the singer's life.  Director Jon Chu decided he had too much footage on the cutting room floor and reworked the film to share even more Biebs with his fans.

Director Tony Gilroy has met with a few actors in his search for his new leading man, according to Variety.  The new lead character in Universal's The Bourne Legacy will be an assassin similar to that of Matt Damon's character Jason Bourne.

This could be a good thing since it will allow Damon to come back in some way if he choose, since they are not replacing him.

Apparently. Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Kellan Lutz have met with the director to talk about potentially starring as the new lead.

The studio is looking for someone in their 20's or early 30's to play the main part and Gilroy wants to screen-test everyone he meets with.

Production will begin once they find their leading man.

Hall Pass Movie Review: Not Funny and Sadly Pathetic

0
0

Hall Pass debuted this weekend and it is the latest flick from the Farrelly brother - the duo who brought us There's Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber.  Their latest flick is just that - dumb and dumber.

The Plot: Two men, Rick (Wilson) and Fred (Sudeikis) have been married for years, but can't help their wandering eye.  Their wives, played by Jenna Fisher and Christina Applegate, notice their "extra-curricular activities' and are fed up with their antics.  They give them a hall pass for the week, which basically means they get a week off from their marriages and are able to do whatever they want.

What's The Game Plan?

The wives head out of town to Cape Cod and the men believe they are going to get crazy for the week, hitting on and sleeping with as many women they can during their week off.  They encounter many adventured, but each one seems to go wrong in one way or another.  You'd think with these two comedians, the adventures-gone-wrong plot, would be hilarious.  Unfortunately, the crude-jokes and foul language is too much and gets in the way of any potential humor.  We wind up with a depressingly unfunny and pathetically creepy film.

Golfing Expedition

What's Bad:

Jason Sudeikis in general.  Sudeikis makes Fred a particularly awful person who acts like an obnoxious fool, objectifying women at every turn and trying to corrupt the more moral Rick.  He has no saving grace whatsoever in this film and you kind of hope his wife Grace, whom he has no respect for and it almost seems like he can't stand her, will go off and cheat herself.  Fred is completely creepy and it seems the Farrelly brothers are trying to somehow make that endearing and likable, but it's a huge turnoff.

Picking Up Girls

The film is generally sexist the entire way through.  The two men seem to think women are tools to pleasure them and give them what they want.  They are constantly seeking sex, whether in their marriage or outside of it.  There is one particularly sexist scene where Fred is explaining why the guys shouldn't feel bad about their hall pass.  He asserts women live their dreams, but guys don't - women's dreams are playing house and having children and men give them that.  Whereas a man's dream is never fulfilled.

Golfing Expedition

What's Good:

There's isn't much that's actually good with this movie, the only saving grace is Wilson who plays his usual lovable self.  Even when he is forced to deliver crude lines and awful jokes, he seems to do it with a little bit of good-natured charm.

I actually found myself relieved when the scenes with the wives in Cape Cod came on.  Fisher and Applegate were much more entertaining and likable in the film.  The two have their own out-of-marriage experience, but it doesn't have the same nasty crudeness as the men.

The Couples

Not only does the movie lack humor, it also lacks any kind of heart or scenes anyone can relate to.  It mocks the idea of marriage and although the end offers some kind of resolution, you don't get the sense anything has changed.  I was completely disappointed in what this film actually delivered.  It had so much potential, but the reality was such a let down.

The new trailer shows some new scenes of Arthur testing out different jobs to make money on his own.  There are some hilarious scenes and if the trailer is any indication, Brand makes for a very funny Arthur and it will be a pretty good movie.

Check out the trailer and see for youself.

Charlie Sheen in The Hangover 2?

A new rumor is going around that Charlie Sheen has been offered a cameo role in the new Hangover film.  Apparently his crazy media blitz is working.  Since his show Two and a Half Men has been canceled indefinitely due to his bizarre antics, he is out of work and could potentially be looking for a job.

So what's all this about The Hangover II?

Charlie Sheen Picture

According to Badass Digest, producer/director Todd Phillips are looking to have the actor film a cameo for his highly anticipated sequel to The Hangover.

Phillips obviously wants to bank of the latest celebrity of the hour - previously he wanted Mel Gibson to film a cameo, but that didn't end up happening.

The film has already wrapped, so they would have to get back into shooting for this cameo, but that has been done before, so you never know!

It will be interesting to see if this actually happens!

The film is set to hit theaters in May - so they don't have a lot of time.

Community Actress Emily Brie Joins Five-Year Engagement

Community/Mad Men actress Alison Brie is set to star in the upcoming film from director Nicholas Stoller, according to Variety.  Stoller is responsible for the comedies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek

Now the director is moving forward with his next project, a dramedy called Five-Year Engagement. The film already has Emily Blunt and Jason Segel on board to play the central couple in the film, now he's cast another role.

Funny Jason SegelActress Emily BluntCommunity Actress Alison Brie

Brie will play Blunt's sister in the film which looks at the ups and downs of a relationship between a couple.  The movie was written by Stoller and Segel.  Apparently, the female character is British, which would make sense considering Blunt is British.

The film is set to start shooting in April.

Top 10 Movies: Book to Film Adaptations

0
0

Lots of book to movie adaptations coming out this year - including Something Borrowed coming out in May, which just had a new trailer released today.

It seems many movies these days –I would even be so bold as to say close to half –are based on novels.  Heck, there’s even an Oscar category devoted strictly to adapted screenplays.

Most of the time, avid readers complain films don’t even come close to depicting complicated character development and in-depth descriptions painstakingly weaved through the intricate plots of novels.  Yet despite all that huffing and puffing, we still flock to the theater on opening night to see how the director depict our favorite novel on the big screen.

Here is our top 10 best movies based on books:

 1. SOPHIE’S CHOICE

Sophie

Based on the award-winning novel of the same name by William Styron, “Sophie’s Choice” depicts the friendship between the narrator Stingo, a novelist, and lovers, Sophie and Nathan. The film was nominated for numerous Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay attesting to the great homage the film plays to the novel.

2. THE COLOR PURPLE

The Color Purple PosterDirector Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple” takes on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker.   The film portrays Cecile Harris’ life of abuse and subsequent healing.  Although criticized as portraying too many race stereotypes and telling an African-American story through the eyes of a white director, critics mostly praised the film.

3. FIELD OF DREAMS

Field of Dreams PosterMany people didn’t know the beloved film “Field of Dreams” was based on the novel Shoeless Joe by W.P Kinsella when they first saw it. Ray, a farmer, builds a baseball field for seemingly no reason, but it’s later revealed he makes the field after hearing Shoeless Joe Jackson’s voice telling him to do so.  The film focuses on Ray, leaving out the relationship with characters Eddie and Richard, but you don’t really feel like you’re missing anything.

4. THE NOTEBOOK

The Notebook Photo

Ruining all notions of realistic romance for women, the 2004 romantic drama “The Notebook” depicts book-turned-movie author extraordinaire Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name.  The novel is mediocre, even wavering on sappy, with shallow character development.  The film, on the other hand, makes us believe such an unlikely romance is possible.  With good acting by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, the film portrays a love story between teenage sweethearts Noah and Allie.

5. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Pride and Prejudice Poster

The 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” featuring Keira Knightley is the best I’ve seen.  I am a huge fan of the novel, yet many film adaptations can’t seem to find the right balance of wit and charm for Jane Austen’s infamous Elizabeth Bennett.   Keira Knightley plays the main character with precision and grace even garnering her first Best Actress Oscar nomination.   Although true literary critics might argue the film underwent too many changes to be on this list,  the character development and emotion from the actors captures the true essence of the novel and deserves high praise.

6. LITTLE WOMEN

Little Women PosterAnother period piece that deserves praise is the 1994 film “Little Women” based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott.   The film takes viewers on a journey with the four sisters through times of joy and suffering in Massachusetts around the time of the American Civil War.  Although adaptations of this film have the risk of becoming too sweet and child-like, this version takes the novel and the pains the characters go through seriously and with just the right emotion from the actors who portray the famous women.

7. THE ENGLISH PATIENT

The English Patient PosterFor the film adaptation of his novel “The English Patient,” author Michael Ondaatje worked very closely with filmmakers to ensure accuracy… and it paid off.  The film won 9 of its 12 Oscar nominations, winning both Best Picture and Best Director for Anthony Minghella.  Although the novel focuses on four main characters during World War II, the 1996 film focuses on the relationship between Hungarian mapmaker, played by Ralph Fiennes and a wealthy Englishwoman (Kristen Scott Thomas).

8. BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY

Bridget JonesA light and funny film, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” plays out the personal ramblings of a woman in her early 30’s.  Based on the novel by British writer Helen Fielding, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” depicts a woman who is not happy with her love life or her weight and believes there is a direct relationship between the two.  Masterfully portrayed by Renee Zellweger, Bridget Jones emphasizes the often trite concerns of women everywhere.

9. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

Memoirs of a Geisha Poster

Arthur Golden’s novel Memoirs of a Geisha celebrated a second success on the bestsellers list eight years after it was originally published because of a popular movie by the same name.  Although many criticized the film for casting Chinese actresses in the roles of Japanese Geisha, the overall cinematography was breathtaking.  The book provides beautiful descriptions and harrowing details of the life of a geisha.  Similarly, the film captures the essence of Japanese culture and provides character development that has viewers captivated through to the end.

10. PRECIOUS

Precious Poster

Although at times extremely difficult to see played out on screen, “Precious” tells the story of Claireece P. “Precious” Jones and her struggle living with an abusive mother in the Harlem ghetto.   Based on the novel Push, Precious finds solace in school with a caring teacher and finds hope with her friends there.  The novel is presented in the first-person, but the movie lacks the first-person perspective and some of that is lost in the translation to the big screen.

So, what’s your favorite book-to-movie adaptation?  Do they ever live up to your expectations?  Do you even read the books first or does it make the movie less enjoyable?

Check out this site for Movie Licensing USA, which includes a full catalogue of all books-to-movies titles from the 1980’s onward.  Are you surprised by some of the titles?  I sure was!

EXCLUSIVE: Billy Burke Talks Breaking Dawn, Red Riding Hood, and Working With K-Stew

0
0

While filming Breaking Dawn, the last installment of The Twilight Saga in Vancouver, Billy Burke took some time to speak with Reel Movie News about his upcoming film Red Riding Hood, his currently in theaters movie, Drive Angry 3D, and of course, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

Burke also asked that we put out a word for him to express his desire to work with Natalie Portman one day.

Check out the rest of the interview below.

Actor Billy Burke

Talk about your role in Red Riding Hood.

It’s a slightly, pun the metaphor, but off the path of the fairytale and I play Red Riding Hoods drunken, misguided father. It was one of the most beautiful sets I’ve ever been on. I kind of look like the drunken jolly green giant. [laughs]

Were you excited to work with Catherine Hardwicke again?

Absolutely. I love her to death, and I always have a special place in my heart for her. When she called me and pitched me the movie and the idea, I was all in. She created the Twilight world and she did an amazing job with that, and I figured if anyone could make a picture like this, it would be her.

People are comparing this movie to Twilight. Why do you think that is?

Here’s what my guess is. There is a love triangle. There’s a young girl and two gentlemen vying for her attention. That’s probably the biggest comparison. Other than that, there’s a wolf in it. [laughs] There’s sweeping shots across the mountains in the trailer and there were some in Twilight, so I think that’s what people are looking at.

How was it working with Amanda Seyfried?

Love her to death. She’s a lovely person, we got along great. We remain friends. She, myself and my wife are all still in contact and she’s a good chick. Extremely talented.

Talk about Drive Angry 3D.

I had way to much fun making that movie. I had a blast.

How is filming in 3D different than regular?

Not at all. For the actors, you would never know. The cameras look a bit different, but you’re not asked to do anything or perform a different way for the 3D effect.

How did you like filming the action scenes?

The first part of my career was a lot of action, so I was happy to get back into it. I did as much as I could. I had a stunt double, but I don’t believe they actually used him once. Amber Heard was down for all of her tricks in this movie too, she was a trooper. She got the shit beat out of her. She’s a chick bad-ass. I for one certainly would not want to fuck with her in a dark alley. [laughs]. She’s not tiny, she’s full on. We had a fight scene, and it was a lot - we had a lot of physical stuff to do and she was there for the entire thing. I think there was maybe one sequence where her double was used, but other than that she was there. I was way more exhausted than her. [laughs]

Any update you can give me on Breaking Dawn?

I’m here in Vancouver right now filming. The stache is here in all its glory. After this film, I’m not sure the stache in this form will ever return to my face. This has been a great gig for me. I don’t think that there’s any relief at all, if there were more books and more movies, I’d probably keep coming back. It’s a fun role to play and I love the peeps involved. As far as being sad, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I’m certainly not going to be glad, though.

Fans are dying to know if the scene between Charlie and Bella after the wedding be kept in the movie?

I do have a scene with Kristen directly after the wedding, before they take off for the honeymoon.

How is your music going?

The first record is out there. In my spare time up here, I use it for writing and putting together what might be my second album.
