The Crow Remake to Start Shooting in Spring

Although fans of The Crow have had mixed feelings about a The Crow remake, it appears that the production is moving forward. Producer Edward R. Pressman said that the production is set to get going “in the spring” and as far as we can tell, Dracula Untold star Luke Evans is still attached to play the lead.

The Crow Logo

"It still has a big fan base even though it was so long ago. But the generation today doesn’t even know 'The Crow,'" Pressman said to The Hollywood Reporter, as to why he’s pursuing a remake.

He feels that audiences are ready for a return to the character that he calls “the anti Spider-Man.”

Luke Evans will take the role made tragically famous by Brandon Lee, who died during the filming of the cult classic. As far as we know, F. Javier Guitierrez is still attached to direct. In a stroke of genius, they’re using The Crow creator James O’Barr as a creative consultant, which can only be a good thing.

What's fascinating is that The Crow was supposed to be at Comic-Con, but nothing ever materialized, leaving us guessing if the remake was indeed still happening. Guess this answers that question!

Watch The Crow online to see the original and let us know in the comments section below if you think this remake is a good idea at all!

Will The Crow be a worthy remake like these 13 films? Time will tell!

White Bird In a Blizzard Exclusive: Shailene Woodley Makes “Movies That I Want to Watch”

As you can tell from the White Bird in a Blizzard trailer, Shailene Woodley is playing a character unlike we’ve ever seen her tackle before.

We caught up with the emerging superstar for an exclusive video interview, along with her writer-director Gregg Araki, where she talked about what it was about this wildly original film that made her tackle the role while still making blockbusters like the Divergent series and smash hits such as The Fault in Our Stars.

“It’s a movie that doesn’t get made every day,” Woodley said. “It’s not a coming of age film. I don’t want to call it that. But you do watch this girl evolve. You watch her mistakes and blunders and her triumphs.”

Woodley also sheds light on what it is that makes her choices for films so fantastic, as she currently films Insurgent in Atlanta.

“I want to make movies that I want to watch,” Woodley said. “So, when I read this script, I knew this was a movie I want to see.”

Watch Divergent online to get a whole nother take on the Woodley acting essence! And check out White Bird in a Blizzard in theaters now.

Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice Trailer Is Ready: When Can We See It?

It if appears that Marvel and DC Comics are going tit for tat in the movie wars of late, you’d be right.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Logo

As soon as it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be in Captain America 3, Warner’s and DC responded and released their full superhero slate through 2020. And it’s one that includes solo movies for Wonder Woman, Aquaman and a Green Lantern reboot.

And now merely days after Marvel released the highly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer, we’ve got news that the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer is done and will be revealed soon.

But when?

The Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor flick isn’t due until March 25, 2016, but word is that the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer will be attached to a film arriving in theaters this fall.

With only two months left in the year, that means this thing could land any time now.

Given that it is a Warner’s movie, if we were to bet, we think it would arrive with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. But, technically, that film arrives December 17, and isn’t that “winter?”

And one more thing... sources close to this information say that the first trailer will be Dark Knight heavy. Hmmm....

In that incredible Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer, we get our first views of James Spader’s Ultron. But it’s not a full-on view, we see his head, eyes and torso in various scenes while he quotes Pinocchio (one of the 13 things we learned from the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer) to our utter delight.

Now, thanks to Marvel’s release of the concept art for their villain, we’ve got a full-on view.

And we can see how Ultron could come from the mind of Tony Stark as he looks a bit like an Iron Man suit, but completely on steroids!

As we know from the plot description, Stark’s desire to start a robotic peacekeeping force backfires and then we get… Ultron. And Ultron's mission is to completely destroy the world and eradicate the planet of all humans. You know, as many cinematic AI robots tend to do.

Avengers: Age of Ultron lands in theaters May 1, 2015 and in the meantime, watch The Avengers online because we know your Avengers mania is in high gear right now!

Weekend Movie Preview: October 24, 2014

The weekend movie preview the weekend before Halloween should probably be all about the scares. We do have a horror film to cover -- Ouija -- but the headline here is Keanu Reeves rocking as John Wick

Bill Murray also rocks this week as the title character in St. Vincent

Let's break it down...

John Wick: Reeves plays a "retired" hit man who, after losing his wife and a few other things that leave him with nothing, launches a full-on effort to get revenge. The story is electric. The action astounds and Reeves hasn't been this good since The Matrix.

Keanu Reeves Fires Back
Keanu Reeves takes on fire in a still from John Wick.

Our John Wick review also salutes the filmmakers for creating a world that has us leaving reality behind and yet living and breathing in a landscape they created that feels as real as any we experience in our daily lives. It is simply one of the best action movies of the year. Period.

Ouija: The reason why this flick, based on the board game Ouija that lets players "contact" the dead, doesn't sit atop our list this weekend before Halloween is frankly -- it's just not that scary. And sadly, if there was ever a game that is ripe for a big screen horror movie treatment, it's Ouija!

Contacting the Spirits
Hey guys, given that this is a horror movie, is this "game" such a good idea to play in a dark deserted house where somebody killed themselves -- after playing the game!

As our Ouija review stated, Olivia Cooke carries the movie as much as she can as a woman whose best friend hangs herself after playing the game. When she gathers her friends together to try to communicate with her, all hell breaks loose. Well, it kind of does.

St. Vincent: Murray may just finally get that elusive Oscar nod he wants for his role as the titular character who is less than likable to say the least. But, in the hands of Murray he has a slew of redeeming qualities that come out when he's hired to watch over his neighbor's (Melissa McCarthy) little boy. The two forge the most unlikely of friendships in this delightful dramatic comedy.

We All Scream for Ice Cream

The original trilogy of George Lucas’ Star Wars clocks in at just under seven hours. But, Digg has boiled down all those deaths in just under three minutes in a fabulous new video.

But, look at the final death count for Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and we’re in a whole different league of dying!

As we await the December 18, 2015 arrival of Star Wars: Episode VII, let’s look back at how everyone perished in the first trilogy. And who do you think dies last? One guess is all you’ll need!

Ouija Scares Victory Over John Wick: Weekend Box Office Report

$

Despite some sub-par reviews, including our Ouija review, the horror flick based on the board game came in first place at the weekend box office with a $20 million debut. With Halloween next Friday, this should hardly be a surprise as it was the only new horror flick to open wide.

Ouija Still Photo

The Keanu Reeves action flick John Wick also did pretty darn well, coming in second with $14.2 million, Reeves' biggest debut in eight years (since The Day the Earth Stood Still). Hopeful the flick will continue to have legs and give us more John Wick stories in the future as it is truly a character that fits the 50-year-old star like a glove.

Third place belonged to last week’s number one flick, Fury. The Brad Pitt-starring World War II actioner with those awesome Fury quotes banked another $13 million (a great second week result) to bring its cume to $46 million in two weeks.

Fourth found a former two-time box office winner in Gone Girl. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike’s thriller kept the heat up by selling $11.1 million in tickets in its fourth week of release. Thus far, the David Fincher film is his highest grossing flick in his career with $124 million.

The film closing out the top five is the animated visual stunner, The Book of Life -- another perfect film for this time of year. Clearly audiences agreed, with its $9.8 million bank this past weekend.

Lastly, we could not be more thrilled with the sixth place finish of St. Vincent. Bill Murray stars as the title character and the independent movie scored big with critics and clearly audiences too as it landed in sixth with $8 million.

Box Office Top 10:

1. Ouija, $20 million
2. John Wick, $14.2 million
3. Fury, $13 million
4. Gone Girl, $11.1 million
5. The Book of Life, $9.8 million
6. St. Vincent, $8 million
7. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, $7 million
8. The Best of Me, $4.7 million
9. The Judge, $4.345 million
10. Dracula Untold, $4.3 million

Nightcrawler Red Band Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Is Bonkers!

Jake Gyllenhaal is absolutely brilliantly bonkers in his latest film, Nightcrawler.

We, in many ways, see it as a bookend to his last film that involved the seedier side of Los Angeles, End of Watch

As you can see from the newly released red band trailer for Nightcrawler, Gyllenhaal plays a man who will go to any lengths, break any rule and do absolutely anything to capture the most extreme horror happenings in the city of Los Angeles each night on camera for the 6 a.m. morning local news.

He hooks up with a local affiliate’s morning news producer, played with pristine power by Rene Russo, and the two drive their ratings up as Gyllenhaal’s videos get more and more daring, grim… and supremely popular.

Nightcrawler lands on October 31 and is easily one of the best of the year. Stay with Movie Fanatic all week for our exclusive video interviews with Gyllenhaal and Russo.

Watch End of Watch online and then prepare to witness a whole new level of great Gyllenhaal in action as another Los Angeles-based character later this week when Nightcrawler hits theaters.

Three character posters for Fox’s Exodus: Gods and Kings have landed!

One shows off Christian Bale as Moses, one spotlights Joel Edgerton as Ramses and the third illustrates how this “brotherhood” was destined for one thing -- battling each other.

Earlier, we shared with you the 11 things we learned from seeing Exodus: Gods and Kings footage and above all else, and despite what people have (rightfully) complained about, Bale and Edgerton are fantastic together. You can feel the love that turns to loathe in one of the most iconic biblical stories ever told

Ridley Scott directs his most ambitious epic yet in the tale of how Moses would go from son of privilege to banned Hebrew who would rise and lead his people out of centuries of bondage and into the promised land (after 40 years in the desert!).

John Wick not only brings Keanu Reeves back to the action movie genre, but it gives the iconic movie quote maker a slew more great lines for his career quote arsenal.

As you can tell from our John Wick review, Movie Fanatic utterly adored this action-packed flick that is beyond fun.

Audiences turned out to the tune of $14 million at the weekend box office, and we suspect it will leap to number one this coming weekend.

And if you haven’t seen it, nothing in the below quotes is a spoiler. In fact, it should do nothing but drive up anticipation for seeing this flick that could be the best action movie of the year.

It is the best work of Reeves’ since that film you can see when you watch The Matrix online.

Hot on the heels of that Furious 7 poster that debuted this morning, which also announced the fact that the Furious 7 trailer would land November 1, we’ve got another poster to reveal to you now!

And what is really striking about this latest Furious 7 poster is that it doesn’t contain a single one of its superstar cast as its main subject. Yup, that’s just a tire, but when you see a tire like this… doesn’t it just scream Fast and Furious? You bet it does!

The Fast and Furious franchise has really become iconic when a film can promote itself without using the likeness of Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel and especially Paul Walker in one of his final film roles.

Check out a teaser for The Road to Furious 7 below!

Stay with Movie Fanatic all week as we suspect that Universal is going a little fanatically furious for Furious 7 as we gear up for that first trailer.

Back when we were in San Diego for Comic-Con, it seemed that Benedict Cumberbatch was a lock to be Marvel’s Dr. Strange.

Star Trek Into Darkness Benedict Cumberbatch

Then, the rumor patrol went wild for the news that Joaquin Phoenix was going to be the latest Marvel comics superhero to leap to the big screen and Cumberbatch’s name fell to the background as he simply walked the halls of the San Diego Convention Center promoting his Penguins of Madagascar movie.

How much things can change!

Now that Joaquin Phoenix has dropped out of the Marvel movie -- apparently due to the fact that he didn’t want to sign one of those long term deals that the comic book studio is known for -- we have news for all you Cumberbitches out there!

He’s the man! Or, more superficially, Cumberbatch is the good Dr. Strange!

Avengers Line-Up Will Be “Altered” By End of Avengers: Age of Ultron

In the Marvel comic books, The Avengers were an ever-changing group of superheroes where sometimes individuals would come and go to deal with their own personal storylines and return for a huge Avengers adventure. But, there was always an Avengers unit doing something, and that appears to be the model with the cinematic world too.

Avengers Age of Ultron Poster

Given what we saw in the Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer, some of our favorite heroes may be sitting out Avengers 3, while others will be brought in. That sentiment was echoed by Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige in a recent interview with BuzzFeed.

"It's like as it was in publishing when each of the characters would go on their own adventures and then occasionally team up for a big, 12-issue mega-event. Then they would go back into their own comics, and be changed from whatever that event was,” Feige said.

“I envision the same thing occurring after this movie, because the [Avengers] roster is altered by the finale of this film.”

With a potential Civil War storyline being set up with the addition of Robert Downey Jr. to Captain America 3, we saw this writing on the hypothetical wall.

Watch The Avengers online and dive back in to that world and get ready for Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Digital Download Review: Soaring Ever Higher

After making a half a billion in box office, How to Train Your Dragon 2 comes home and we got to check it out on HD digital download, a full two weeks before its November 11 DVD and Blu-Ray release date.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 DVD

The sequel to How to Train Your Dragon commences five years after that first film left off and the world of humans and dragons has never been more harmonious. But, something evil is afoot and Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless will discover it as they traverse the landscape of this world, making maps of previously undiscovered areas that surround their village -- as teased in this How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer

Director Dean DeBlois has truly done it again with these characters that first enthralled audiences back in 2010. And might we say, he has even upped it a few notches in quality, thrills, emotional power and an impeding sense of danger that reverberates through How to Train Your Dragon 2 as it sets up the we can’t wait to see it How to Train Your Dragon 3.

If this flick isn’t nominated for Best Animated Picture, it will be a true crime. Baruchel has further grown into his character and with the introduction of Cate Blanchett as his long lost mother (no spoilers here as to how that happens and why), the heartstrings are sufficiently pulled -- and they even get stretched for dragon-kind as well because of it.

The cast of characters returns led by Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson, as well as America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and newbies Kit Harrington and Djimon Hounsou. And each brings even more gusto to the role and thus the film than they did the first time around. This film is truly special.

But, what about the bonus features?

Well, is it us, or have animated movies been killing it lately with hours of materials on their home video releases that enlighten the viewer into the filmmaking process, and also enhance the overall story in the process? How to Train Your Dragon 2 is no different. It is utterly sublime what DreamWorks Animation has given audiences with this digital download release.

Hiccup and Toothless How to Train Your Dragon 2

Leading the way is Where No One Goes: The Making of How to Train Your Dragon 2. DuBlois and his talented team illustrate how they managed to top the original film and pushed the boundaries of animation and storytelling with their latest. Animation is an intense creative process and this featurette shows how passion meets talent and the results are mind-blowing.

For fans of the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless that drives why people adore this series in the first place, you will want to see the featurette Hiccup’s Inventions in Flight. Secrets of how these two work together and form an unbeatable team are explored through an interactive tour that truly melds the worlds of fandom and filmmaking.

And one of our favorite characters, Berk, narrates the featurette that takes us inside his dragon stable in Berk’s Dragon World. What a joy!

Speaking of characters giving us an inside look, Fishleg’s Dragon Stats allows the viewer to test their knowledge of the dragons in the village and these quizzes should separate the true fans from those who need to brush up on their dragon history!

For those who appreciate and treasure the world of DreamWorks Animation, our last salute to the How to Train Your Dragon 2 bonus features may just be the best. World of DreamWorks Animation presents a slew of music videos from an entire cadre of flicks that has quickly put the studio on the map for animation awesomeness.

“The second film in the Divergent franchise takes the story and action to another level and, by partnering with RealD, we were able to blend gripping performances and mind-blowing spectacle to create a unique event on screen," said producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher in a statement.

Paddington Trailer: A Pinch of Chaos

The latest Paddington trailer has landed and it introduces us to the voice of the legendary children’s book bear played by Skyfall’s Ben Whishaw!

Whishaw stepped in when Colin Firth quit Paddington because he felt his vocal talents weren’t quite right for the live action flick that introduces the world to a big screen version of the beloved bear from children’s literature.

Paddington comes from the jungles of Peru and finds his way to London in search of adventure… and a home. He finds it with Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins and their kids -- and they find that a “pinch of chaos” is exactly what their family needs.

The tension for the film arrives in the form of Nicole Kidman, who stars as a taxidermist who wants to stuff him for her collection.

Look for Paddington -- originally set for release on Christmas – on January 16.

At the Marvel Studio event we attended earlier today, there were many announcements. But the one that came front and center was when Marvel head Kevin Feige announced that a Black Panther movie was indeed happening and that it would arrive on November 3, 2017.

Black Panther Photo

Then, after Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr took the stage, more on that in a few, they introduced the man who will play Black Panther -- 42 and Get On Up star Chadwick Boseman.

Boseman could not have been a better choice to join Marvel's team in their Phase Three cinematic world.

After revealing that Captain America 3 would be subtitled Civil War, which we thought would happen, Downey and Evans asked Boseman to pick a side.

Boseman was quite political with his response. "Black Panther kind of does his own thing," Boseman said.  "I'm just blessed to be here and be a part of the Marvel world and make some magic."
