Movie Fanatic has been given two pairs of tickets to the Los Angeles premiere of the film December 6 at 7 p.m. and we want to send two of our readers and their friend to the big premiere of one of the most Oscar-worthy films of the year.

Fans of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy do not have to wait until 2012 to catch a glimpse of our favorite caped crusader in The Dark Knight Rises. A prologue of the film will arrive December 16 on IMAX screens in select cities (list of them are below). Nolan was the first to use IMAX cameras when he filmed The Dark Knight and was eager to use the technology on his final film in the Batman series.

Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises
“Our experience on The Dark Knight shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring,” Nolan said in a statement. “The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format. Giving the fans an early look at an IMAX sequence is a great way to draw attention to what I believe will be an incredible way to experience our story when it comes out next summer.”

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Trent Reznor Releases Karen O Immigrant Song

0
0

How could it be missed? In one of the more riveting trailers from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, film composer Trent Reznor had singer Karen O cover one of the great Led Zeppelin classics, Immigrant Song. Now Sony Pictures, Reznor and Atticus Ross have released the full track to the world and Movie Fanatic has it for our readers!

Immigrant Song, particularly this version, is perfect for director David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -- and Reznor knew it. The man responsible for the haunting, Oscar-winning soundtrack to The Social Network (also directed by Fincher) could have completely done a cover-free score to Dragon Tattoo, but heard something in Karen O’s voice and Led Zeppelin’s classic that he knew would be a match made in heaven for the soundtrack to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Breaking Dawn Continues to Draw Blood at the Box Office

Breaking Dawn continues to roll and proves that three times is a charm as the film added another $16.9 million to its total of $247.3 million domestically to win the box office for the third week in a row.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in Breaking Dawn
The Muppets came in second for the second week in a row with $11.2 million, bringing its U.S. total to $56.1 million. Looks like Jason Segel, Kermit and Miss Piggy will be back for a sequel, thank goodness!

Hugo, as we predicted in last week’s box office report, is picking up speed. The Martin Scorsese film landed in third place with $7.6 million, bringing its total to $25.3 million, which should only grow as the holidays get closer and word of mouth continues to build for this fantastic film.

What sticks out on this extremely slow box office weekend are the hangers-on from past weekends. Tower Heist is in its fifth weekend and is still in the top 10. Brett Ratner’s film, that stars Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, has inched its way up to $70.8 million. Think it will hit the coveted $100 million mark? Also lingering is Puss in Boots -- at number 10 with $3.1 million -- taking its total to $139.5 million in six weeks of release.

Box office top 10:

1. Breaking Dawn, $16.9 million
2. The Muppets, $11.2 million
3. Hugo, $7.6 million
4. Arthur Christmas, $7.4 million
5. Happy Feet Two, $6 million
6. Jack and Jill, $5.5 million
7. The Descendants, $5.2 million
8. Immortals, $4.4 million
9. Tower Heist, $4.1 million
10. Puss in Boots, $3.1 million

The Help Stars Reflect on Blockbuster as Blu-Ray Debuts

0
0

As The Help lands on DVD and Blu-Ray today, Movie Fanatic got a few words of wisdom with the stars of the smash hit movie -- Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer -- on the special place their important film holds in each of their hearts.

The Help stars Emma Stone
Films such as The Help are priceless in reminding viewers that there was a time not so long ago where the idea of a black president was not even in the realm of possibility -- freedoms were not enjoyed by all. “There is a danger it’s forgotten and it’s very important that it’s not,” Davis said. “I think that we enjoy the privileges that we have today not knowing what went into creating them -- we take them for granted kind of like they were born under a rock and the blood shed and the people who sacrificed their hopes and dreams in order for this younger generation to have this privilege of loving whoever they love and dreaming whatever they want to dream and being whoever they want to be.”

Davis added that the themes of the film are easily what drove millions to see it and what will keep The Help resonant for generations to come. What specific themes most touched her? “The courage of the underdog for a start and the courage of the ordinary person who is being repressed by culture, who has been dictated to, to have no expectations of themselves and rising above all of that to extraordinary heights,” Davis said. “It’s a story about the outsider, it really is, and it’s a story about love and courage and friendship.”

As for Davis’ co-star Stone, she added that the reason why the themes are so powerful is because they are universal. “It’s about being human,” Stone said. “It’s the story of the underdog, the story of bravery in the face of being jailed or being killed. It’s a story about racial inequality, gender inequality -- there are so many messages and themes. Courage is probably the biggest theme of all.”

Spencer, who is getting serious Oscar buzz for her performance added that, “Friendship is a huge part of the story and at the center of all of it is the fact that these unlikely friendships are born. These women were from very disparate backgrounds and no one would have suspected that these friendships would come to fruition in the way that they do.”

For Spencer, being on location in Mississippi was as important as getting inside her character’s head as well as pleasing the millions of fans of the best-selling book The Help.

“It’s real and you know that when you walk into the room people have lived there, it’s got its own history. When you are on a sound stage it stops at eye level and you have to keep the reality in your mind but we never had to do that with The Help. When we were in those real houses you never looked up and saw lights hanging down, we were standing in a real place.”

Stone’s career is skyrocketing with her roles in Crazy, Stupid, Love and the upcoming Spider-Man reboot; her participation in The Help was a special moment for her she will not soon forget. “It was absolutely life changing and not just in the sense that I learned so much and it was such an enriching experience personally,” Stone said. “I think very differently now after The Help, so it was an incredible and very important experience for me.”

Top 10 Steven Spielberg Movies: The Best from the Best

0
0

Steven Spielberg has not one, but two films arriving in December: The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse. Movie Fanatic is taking a look back at the distinguished career of a blockbuster maker and is presenting our readers the top 10 films of a master filmmaker in Steven Spielberg.

Steven Spielberg Red Carpet Picture
10. Empire of the Sun
With Empire of the Sun, Spielberg introduced us to the greatness that is Christian Bale. The young actor played a child of privilege who is separated from his parents when the Japanese invade China during World War II. Empire of the Sun also gave us a stellar performance from John Malkovich and explored Spielberg’s fascination with World War II.

9. Catch Me if You Can
Catch Me if You Can is a complete and utter joy. It is easy to see that Spielberg was having a blast filming the cat-and-mouse thriller starring frequent collaborator Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio.

8. The Color Purple
The Color Purple presented a unique challenge for the director as it was his first straight drama and would have a massive audience already anticipating it. The book was an international bestseller and as Spielberg fans know, he adores challenges. Not only did he succeed in delivering a terrific and powerful film, but Spielberg first placed thoughts in Oscar voters’ minds that this guy could someday win Best Director. Sure, he was overlooked for Purple, but without this film, the later Oscar love may not have come to fruition.

7. Jurassic Park
There are Spielberg popcorn movies, and there is Jurassic Park. The film was one of the last of Spielberg's sci-fi epics that used real animatronic puppets and non-CGI effects including models. Of course, there was quite a bit of CGI, but Spielberg wove that into a tale that was all at once touching, thrilling and terrifying.

6. Saving Private Ryan
The opening sequence alone places Saving Private Ryan on this top 10 Spielberg movies list. Never has the D-Day invasion been so accurately captured on screen. Again Spielberg was focused on World War II and in Saving Private Ryan, he pays tribute to what has been called “The Greatest Generation.” Matt Damon and Hanks (again!) anchored a cast that effortlessly melded themselves into a story about heroes and what it means to be one.

John H. Miller Picture

5. Schindler’s List
Spielberg won his first Best Directing Oscar for the film that also took home Best Picture. Schindler’s List not only served as one of Spielberg’s best movies, but it also spawned a passion project for the director: Documenting Holocaust survivors' stories. As dozens of them were dying every week, Spielberg had the foresight to document their horrors and triumphs for future generations so that as many Jews say of World War II, “We must never forget.”

4. Jaws
Jaws is the film that truly made Spielberg. In fact, the director was almost fired on several occasions because of the troubles Jaws had in production. The first weeks of production were easy. Then, when Spielberg and his crew headed out to sea to film the water-based action in the shark thriller, all hell broke loose. Spielberg, of course, was never fired. Jaws became an international cinematic sensation and hundreds of thousands of people found themselves very scared of the water in the summer of 1975.

3. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Raiders of the Lost Ark is, simply put, the benchmark for which all adventures of its vein are measured. Spielberg scored with casting Harrison Ford in the iconic role of Indiana Jones -- toss in a Fedora hat and a leather jacket and history was made. Again, the backdrop was World War II for Spielberg, but Raiders of the Lost Ark was an adventure in the realm of the Saturday morning serials that the filmmaker grew up adoring. It is his tribute, and our classic.

2. ET
Can you believe that M&Ms said no to having their product placed in this classic? Thanks to that, Reese’s Pieces became a household name and Spielberg delivered a film that became the hit of 1982. Fans flocked to the film and many, like this writer, saw it dozens of times. At its heart, ET is a movie about an alien trying to find his way home. Overall, ET was a mirror to our society in terms of how we act as families. The dysfunctional family was functional. Also, fresh off of Watergate, its paranoid view of government was also on display. Collectively ET is pure perfection and it doesn’t matter how many times you watch it, Spielberg’s classic still causes our imagination to soar.

E.T. Picture
1. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
In 1977, Spielberg gave the world Close Encounters. Only a director with his storytelling gift could give us a tale about a father who abandons his family in search of his extra-terrestrial calling as Richard Dreyfuss does in the film, and have audiences cheering at his success. As fascinated as Spielberg is with World War II, he is equally as compelled at the story of aliens and how we would interact with them. In Close Encounters, Spielberg painted them not as invaders, but merely a race of beings equally as inquisitive about us as we are of them.

Thor 2 Loses its Director: Who Should Step Up?

0
0

Patty Jenkins, we hardly knew ya! Thor 2 director Patty Jenkins has left the Thor sequel before filming even got started. We were thrilled that Marvel had hired a rarity in superhero movies, a female director, but unfortunately it looks like Jenkins had creative differences with the studio and has completely resigned from Thor 2.

Chris Hemsworth is Thor
Thor 2 is due in theaters July 26, 2013 and considering the amount of special effects work it takes to bring it to the screen, someone better step up and direct this thing ASAP.

Who do you think should helm Thor 2?

Will Ferrell Goes Cowboy in Casa De Mi Padre Poster

0
0

As the poster for Casa De Mi Padre tells us, Will Ferrell is Armando Alvarez. Judging by Ferrell’s animated pose on the new one sheet, he is all business in the Spanish language flick landing in theaters March 16. Yes, you read that right: Ferrell in a Spanish language film!

Casa di mi Padre Poster
Ferrell’s latest comedy has had little fanfare; there hasn’t even been a trailer. The story, although it does not appear to be to comedic, follows two brothers who are trying to save their family farm, only to wind up in the midst of an all-out war with a drug lord.

Hopefully, we’ll see more from Casa De Mi Padre (House of my Father) in the coming weeks -- color us intrigued about Ferrell in a full-on only in Spanish movie.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Exclusive: Gary Oldman Chats with Movie Fanatic

0

Gary Oldman is about as an esteemed as an actor as we’ve had the pleasure to sit down with for an exclusive interview. Oldman, amongst a career of brilliance, has played Sirius Black, Beethoven, Dracula, Sid Vicious, Lee Harvey Oswald, Pontius Pilate -- and not to mention the iconic role of Commissioner Gordon in the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy. Now Oldman is tackling another legendary character as George Smiley from author John le Carre’s Cold War thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The biggest thrill for Oldman was stepping into the shoes of one of his acting idols who played the role when he was a teen, Alec Guinness. “It’s a funny old world, isn’t it? I remember watching the original series and that was my introduction to John le Carre and the books,” Oldman said in our exclusive video interview. “I was a fan of Alec Guinness. He was the face of Smiley. Who would have known that this 15-year-old kid watching this television series… that I would one day become Smiley.”

Transformers Mystery: Will Michael Bay be Back?

0
0

Reports surfaced earlier today that Michael Bay has agreed to return to direct Transformers 4. Some publications even said that a deal was signed. Not so quick, cautions Bay in a statement on his website. "Right now I'm not decided on Transformers 4,” Bay said. “Studios are passing rumors but I'm not sure what I'm doing? I know I'm going to do Pain and Gain in early spring but that's it for right now. I'm leaving all my options on the table. I've got several studio meetings in the next two weeks."

Michael Bay Directs Transformers Dark of the Moon
One person who would love to make it happen is Transformers producer Steven Spielberg (don’t miss our Top 10 Steven Spielberg Movies). “I hope so,” Spielberg said of Bay returning in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I certainly can’t imagine anybody other than Michael being equipped to make another Transformers. He’s invented a genre, and he’s got the secret formula.”

Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird takes us behind the scenes of filming Mission Impossible in IMAX. Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt and the adventure and the stakes are literally higher. Bird takes audiences inside the filming of the Mission Impossible film using IMAX cameras that have not been utilized like this since The Dark Knight. Pay special attention to how the Ghost Protocol scene where Cruise scales the world’s tallest building can give you vertigo!

Want a Little Moe? The Three Stooges Trailer Premieres

0
0

The Three Stooges has finally released its first trailer and we get a glimpse into what the Farrelly Brothers are doing with the iconic comics. The Three Stooges is inspired by the original Three Stooges shorts and the film will in fact be set up in three 30-minute short features. We know this so far: The trio are left on the doorstep of an orphanage as babies and the film follows them into the mayhem The Stooges are known for including appearing on a reality TV show and getting embroiled in a murder mystery. Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso will play Larry, Moe and Curly.

Five-Year Engagement Trailer: 2012's Most Anticipated Comedy

0
0

The filmmakers who gave us Knocked Up, Bridesmaids, The Muppets and Forgetting Sarah Marshall are back with the comedy Five-Year Engagement. The film’s first trailer has arrived starring Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie and Chris Pratt. Segel and writing partner Nick Stoller combine forces yet again after the success of their The Muppets return.

Five-Year Engagement takes a heartwarming, but totally hilarious look at a couple that has been engaged for -- you guessed it -- five years. Judd Apatow producing, Stoller directing and Segel starring has proved to be a winning combination in the past. From the looks of the above trailer, they may have done it yet again.
