Top 10 Mark Wahlberg Movies: Contraband's Chameleon

0
0

Mark Wahlberg is at his action best again in Contraband, releasing January 13 in theaters everywhere. Contraband is the twenty-eighth film that Wahlberg has appeared in and the actor is only becoming a bigger and bigger star as the years go by. Contraband (check out the trailer) features Wahlberg as a happy husband and father who is pulled back into “one last job” as a smuggler when his former partner threatens his family.

Since Wahlberg debuted on the pop culture radar as Marky Mark and gave us some really Good Vibrations, he has made quite a name for himself as an actor, but also as a producer. As a thespian, he is versatile. Wahlberg can handle comedy, action, romance, thrills and horror. Movie Fanatic looks back and gives you the Top 10 Mark Wahlberg movies!

10. I Heart Huckabees
Not the greatest of films, but Wahlberg’s performance in I Heart Huckabees is astounding. It is here in Huckabees that he shows his adeptness at humor and how he can also be a spoke in the wheel that is an ensemble film.

Mark Wahlberg in I Heart Huckabees
9. The Big Hit
Some may scoff at this selection, but Movie Fanatic loves The Big Hit, particularly because of Wahlberg. His boyfriend to Christina Applegate allows Wahlberg to show franticness, fierceness and fondness for his girlfriend in the midst of a chaotic situation that threatens all of their lives. Wahlberg's "good guy" goes toe-to-toe with Lou Diamond Phillips in Phillips' role as a complete and utter sociopath.

8. The Basketball Diaries
One of Wahlberg’s first films, The Basketball Diaries not only put Leonardo DiCaprio on the serious actor map, but also Wahlberg. The story of writer Jim Carroll may have made a star out of DiCaprio, but many casting directors in Hollywood took serious note of another stellar actor in the cast, the one and only Mark Wahlberg.

7. The Other Guys
Wahlberg’s first attempt at an all-out comedy paired him with funnyman Will Ferrell. Wahlberg’s straight man to Ferrell’s comic foil was impeccable. The idea for the Ferrell and Wahlberg pairing emerged after the two did a bit on the Academy Awards to great raves and hilarious results. Enter the story of two cops who are far from heroes, aka The Other Guys, and Wahlberg and Ferrell established themselves as a comic duo to be reckoned with, hopefully for years to come in future projects.

6. The Italian Job
Wahlberg’s innate ability to knock action films out of the park was solidified in The Italian Job. His role as Charlie Croker was one of Wahlberg’s first as a top-billed performer. He even got top billing over Charlize Theron! The Italian Job solidified Wahlberg’s acting chops and its success at the box office also guaranteed his role as a major movie star.

5. The Perfect Storm
In The Perfect Storm, Wahlberg starred with George Clooney in the true story of a group of New England fishermen lost to the titular disaster. Wahlberg was able to channel his Boston accent from his youth and create a performance that was equally tender as it was tenacious.

Mark Wahlberg in The Perfect Storm
4. Three Kings
One of Wahlberg’s first works with David O. Russell (The Fighter), Three Kings again paired Wahlberg with Clooney in the story of a group of Gulf War soldiers who leave their post in an effort to find Saddam Hussein’s rumored stash of gold. The scene where Wahlberg is on the phone with his wife back home while Iraqi soldiers are trying to bust into the room where he has sought refuge is the stuff of legend. On one hand he is not trying to worry his wife and be all sorts of sensitive, and on the other hand he is fending off a group of soldiers who seek to kill him. Amazing.

3. Boogie Nights
Can you imagine anyone else portraying Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights? Hardly! Paul Thomas Anderson’s opus to the San Fernando Valley’s porn industry of the late 1970s and early 1980s is an astounding film, largely due to Wahlberg’s performance.

2. The Departed
The Oscar-winning The Departed finally got an Academy Award into the hands of Martin Scorsese. It possessed one of the best casts of that year including Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and of course, Wahlberg. His Massachusetts police detective was hard-edged, but in Wahlberg’s hands it was not the caricature that it could have been. Wahlberg delivers one of his career best performances and his role contributed to what led the film to become the Best Picture of 2006.

Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter
1. The Fighter
With Christian Bale’s Oscar-winning performance, it would have been easy for Wahlberg to sit in the background in The Fighter (check out Wahlberg's thoughts on Fighter 2). Yet Wahlberg matches Bale note for note and together they bring the boxing brothers to life in one of the best films of 2010. Wahlberg’s mesmerizing as Micky Ward, the real life boxer who mounted the most unlikely of careers to become the best in his sport. The film rivets, Wahlberg’s stellar and coupled with Bale’s and Melissa Leo’s Oscar-winning performances, The Fighter is easily the best Mark Wahlberg movie of his career.

Haywire: First Five Minutes of Movie!

Movie Fanatic has scored the first five minutes to Haywire, director Steven Soderbergh’s latest. Haywire is Soderbergh’s first true foray into the action genre and it will certainly make a star out of its lead, an MMA fighter who leaps off the screen, Gina Carano. When Carano’s spy character is double-crossed, it begins a cat-and-mouse game of survival and revenge that she hopes will end with her being the last one standing.

Haywire: First Five Minutes of the Film

Haywire features an all-star cast, as most of Soderbergh’s films do. It stars Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton.

Stay with Movie Fanatic next week when we roll out our interviews with Carano, Banderas, McGregor and Tatum.

Immortals Gets a Blu-Ray Release Date

The Immortals is coming to home video and with director Tarsem Singh’s visionary masterpiece, it will look particularly amazing on Blu-Ray. Relativity Media announced today that Immortals (check out our review) will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on March 6.

The Immortals Blu-RayThe film provided us one of our first impressions of the man who would be the Man of Steel, Henry Cavill. The actor portrays a warrior caught between a battle of the gods and the evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Cavill gets his mission when he seeks to avenge his mother’s death after King Hyperion’s forces have destroyed their village.

Among the stellar sounding extras on the Blu-Ray are deleted scenes, an alternative opening called Young Theseus, two alternative endings and a feature entitled Caravaggio Meets Fight Club as well as… wait for it… a graphic novel called Immortals: Gods & Heroes!

Universal Creating Bruce Almighty Sequel for Jim Carrey

0
0

Hot Tub Time Machine screenwriters Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel have been hired to pen a script for a sequel to the 2003 film Bruce Almighty. Jim Carrey would be back to star -- no word whether Jennifer Aniston would return -- as a man who learns the power of God comes with a high price.

Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty
The first Bruce Almighty followed Carrey’s news reporter as he grappled with his career and relationship woes. Suddenly, God (Morgan Freeman) appears and shows him that being God is not the easiest thing in the world, despite what Bruce may think. Carrey gets God’s powers and at first uses them for our humor, but then learns that great power has a great price.

Steve Carell appeared in the follow-up film, entitled Evan Almighty, which failed to find the same audience power as Bruce Almighty. Stay tuned for more as Movie Fanatic, for one, would love to see Carrey reprise his Bruce Almighty role.

The Divide Exclusive: Michael Biehn Talks Apocalypse

0
0

The Divide star Michael Biehn is no stranger to portraying men grappling with the onset of the apocalypse. Biehn became a star after his role as John Connor’s father, Kyle Reese, in The Terminator. In The Divide, the actor portrays the super of a building in New York City who holds all the cards when the city is attacked by an avalanche of nuclear weapons. The entire cast must huddle in his building’s basement, a makeshift fallout shelter where the best and worst of human behavior come out in the span of the film. Biehn takes us inside The Divide shoot and exclusively tells us that the tension onscreen mirrored what was experienced on the set.

The Divide lands in theaters January 13 and features a star in Biehn that is no stranger to science fiction mayhem. He famously played a huge part in James Cameron’s Aliens as well as the director’s The Abyss and has had a stellar career in film including star turns in Tombstone, The Rock, Grindhouse and Take Me Home Tonight.

Kristen Wiig May do Bridesmaids 2 After All

0
0

Earlier, Movie Fanatic wrote that Bridesmaids 2 would be going forward with Universal Pictures pushing for a sequel. That news contained information that the sequel would progress with or without Bridesmaids star and co-writer Kristen Wiig. Now, Bridesmaids star Wendi McLendon-Covey is chiming in saying that Wiig will be involved.

The Maid of Honor
"She never said that she didn't want to do it… All she said was that she's not working on it right this minute because someone gave her the opportunity to write and direct her own film so, duh, she's going to do that first,” McLendon-Covey said. “So no. I think all she's waiting for is for her and Annie [Mumolo] to come up with an idea that's equally as good… It just won't happen in the next six months."

Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow has also added his two cents about a sequel and his opinion on it seems fair, to say the least. “We don't want to do it unless it can be great,” Apatow said. “I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year."

McLendon-Covey then offered a few ideas for how the sequel could go. "There's always divorce parties," McLendon-Covey said. "There's always baby showers. There's all kinds of hideous things like that that women do."

Warm Bodies: Three New Pics from Zombie Romance

Warm Bodies takes a unique angle on the zombie genre, it adds a little romance. Summit Entertainment has released three new stills from the upcoming zombie flick with flair that debuts August 10.

Nicholas Hoult in Warm Bodies
Jonathan Levine wrote and directed Warm Bodies and it is based on the novel by Isaac Marion. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Dave Franco, Teresa Palmer, Rod Corddry, Analeigh Tipton and its biggest star… John Malkovich.

Warm Bodies Star Nicholas Hoult
Summit also released the film’s first synopsis. So, what is Warm Bodies about?

Nicholas Hoult Stars in Warm Bodies

Studios Line Up for Super Bowl Ads: What Can We Expect?

0
0

They may be the most expensive seconds on television, but when it comes to generating buzz for your films, nothing compares to a riveting trailer appearing during the Super Bowl. Studios that are taking the Super Bowl ad plunge are starting to take shape with Disney, Paramount and Universal taking the lead. None of the above studios have announced what specific films will appear, but Movie Fanatic would bet that Disney will have a John Carter spot appearing, as the flick debuts in March, merely weeks after the big game.

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Colins in John Carter
Relativity Media has plans to air a 30-second spot for its Navy SEALs film Act of Valor. The smaller studio aired a trailer for Limitless during last year’s game and the small, yet expensive, move proved fruitful as the Bradley Cooper film was a smash.

Other likely candidates, given the demo of football’s biggest game, are Paramount Pictures’ G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Universal’s big budget Battleship (check out the Battleship trailer).

Those we think that will sit out this year’s big ad fest are 20th Century fox, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros.

But, what about The Hunger Games? Lionsgate is unlikely to shell out the $4 million for 30 seconds of air time for that film. One, given the books’ success, it sells itself. Two, analysts believe that Hunger Games tilts towards the female demo and although millions of women watch the Super Bowl, it is not considered prime time for appealing to females.

The Dark Knight Rises' Midnight Screenings Selling Out

0
0

The film doesn’t debut until July 19 at midnight, but those first IMAX showings are already selling out for The Dark Knight Rises. That is hardly surprising given that The Dark Knight Rises trailer has broken The Avengers’ record with over 12.5 million views. But, it is astounding. This is the first almost sellout of a midnight showing this far in advance since James Cameron did it in 2009 with Avatar.

Dark Knight Rises Star Christian Bale
Director Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale are back for a final go in Dark Knight Rises, and have brought along Anne Hathaway to play Catwoman. After the astounding billion dollar success of The Dark Knight, again, it should not surprise that interest in the final film in Nolan’s Bat trilogy is so high. But, the midnight IMAX almost-sellout is still astounding. This is a showing of a movie that does not begin its first reel for another seven months!

Hugo Screenwriter Tapped to Write Jersey Boys Movie

0
0

The man who brought Hugo to life onscreen, screenwriter John Logan, has been hired to pen the screenplay for Jersey Boys. The Broadway sensation has enthralled millions in its tale of the rise of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

Jersey Boys Cast
Logan is a two-time Oscar winner and he is charged with bringing the Broadway musical to the silver screen without losing any of the luster it possesses on stage. Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi and follows the four Garden State gents as they become pop music legends.

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons amassed an enormous catalog of hits, all featured in the show and likely to be performed in the screen version as well. From Walk Like a Man, Oh What a Night, Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You, Big Girls Don’t Cry and Sherry, there isn’t a hit that people have not heard at some point in their lives.

Logan’s work can be seen onscreen with two films currently, the aforementioned Hugo and the Ralph Fiennes Shakespearean epic Coriolanus

Finding Nemo 3D Trailer Debuts: Head Back to Sea

Nemo is getting lost all over again on September 14 as Finding Nemo returns to theaters in 3D. The first trailer for Finding Nemo 3D has debuted from Disney Pixar and we cannot think of a more brilliantly visual film to get the 3D makeover than Nemo.

Albert Brooks stars as Marlin, a protective clownfish who is continually looking out for his son Nemo. When Nemo is captured by a diver, Marlin embarks on a rescue mission in order to find his son and bring him home. Along the way he meets Dory (the astounding Ellen DeGeneres), a short-term memory-challenged fish, and the two do everything they can in the effort of Finding Nemo.

Finding Nemo is an Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature in 2003 and was also the second highest-grossing film of that year.

Two The Grey Clips: Liam Neeson Tries to Survive

Liam Neeson is back in action in The Grey after his turns in Taken, Unknown and The A-Team. The Grey follows Neeson and his fellow oilmen (including Dermot Mulroney) as they survive a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. The team was heading home after their stint at the Alaskan oil refinery when bad weather forced their plane to the ground. Two new clips have debuted from The Grey, and the first shows what happens in the moments after the plane crashes: We Need a Fire!

Once they deem that no one will find them where the plane crashed, Neeson leads the team away from the crash site when they quickly learn that they are in the middle of grey wolf territory. Mulroney asks, what is that? As something blurry that is running towards them comes into focus, the wolves have them running for their lives.

Stay with Movie Fanatic as we bring you our exclusive video interview with Neeson and his The Grey cast!

Woman in Black Poster Premiere: Fear Her Curse

0
0

We are merely weeks away from witnessing the next chapter in the cinematic journey of Daniel Radcliffe and a new poster has arrived for Woman in Black. The former Harry Potter plays a young lawyer who is sent to a deceased client’s house to close out her personal business and discovers quickly that he is not alone in the deserted house. Woman in Black has released its final poster and its tagline is priceless: Fear Her Curse.

Woman in Black Quad Poster
Radcliffe is joined in Woman in Black by Ciaran Hinds and Janet McTeer and judging by its most recent trailer, fear is on the docket when the film premieres February 3.

The second poster for Woman in Black asked, “Do you believe in ghosts?” Given the new poster’s tagline, we are gathering that filmmakers are assuming that belief in ghosts is a given.

We have to give it up to the marketing team at CBS Films for their work on Woman in Black. The film’s first poster featured a couple of children with their eyes cut out that asked, “What did they see?”

It all adds up to what should be one terrifying experience at the cinema.

Screen Gems is celebrating the IMAX release of the film with a new IMAX poster.

Dark Knight Rises Lands on EW Cover: New Pic of Bale!

0
0

Christian Bale dons the Bat suit one last time for the cover of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. In the magazine, out January 13, he talks about the strain of being Batman, especially after the success of The Dark Knight. “I can tell you the truth because I’m done with it. I felt immense pressure,” Bale said. “I think it’s a good pressure, because you owe it to the films and the people’s expectations to make great work.”

Christian Bale as Batman
EW rolled out its 2012 preview issue, where it looks at the most anticipated happenings in pop culture for the calendar year. Topping that list has to be Dark Knight Rises, thus the cover, which is saying something. 2012 will bring more anticipated movies than in recent memory (What is your most anticipated 2012 movie?). With The Hobbit, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers and The Hunger Games, the year is looking quite crowded for blockbuster films.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20 and if director Christopher Nolan is nervous about reaction to the voice of villain Bane, as seen in Dark Knight Rises’ prologue that screened before Mission Impossible, you would hardly know it. “I think when people see the film, things will come into focus. Bane is very complex and very interesting and when people see the finished film people will be very entertained by him,” Nolan told EW.

The Words Poster: Bradley Cooper in Text

0
0

In anticipation for its debut at Sundance in a few weeks, the first poster for Bradley Cooper’s The Words has premiered. Surrounded by text, the one sheet shows a side view of Cooper and we take it this is the “good side” of the one-time Sexiest Man Alive.

The Words Poster
The text in The Words’ poster are lines from the screenplay and kudos goes to its creators for being wildly original.

The romance-meets-mystery movie follows Cooper’s character who is a struggling writer. His wife (Zoe Saldana) buys an item for him in an antique store. In it he discovers a “lost” novel from a Hemingway-type author (played by Jeremy Irons). What’s a guy to do… publish as his own? In The Words, you bet.

There is a foil to Cooper’s situation and it comes in the form of Olivia Wilde. She is a fellow author who is determined to discover the source of this great work that seems to have come out of nowhere for Cooper’s author character.

Avatar 2 Release Date Pushed Back, Producer Says

0
0

Rest easy, James Cameron fans. An Avatar sequel is still very much in the works. But you'll need to exercise some serious patience before you see it in theaters.

Originally scheduled for a 2014 release, the follow-up has been pushed back a couple years, producer Jon Landau admitted this week, saying the first sequel is "four years away" and reiterating that the plan is still to release Avatar 3 a year later.

Jake lands on Pandora

Part of the reason for the delay? Cameron is committed to shooting at a high frame rate (60 per second). As you might expect, this kind of advancement in technology is far from a simple one, but the director wants to get it right more so than he wants to rush a finished product to the big screen.

Can't blame him for that.
